Ukrainian Woman Suspected in Monaco Explosion That Injured Oligarch, Family

0

A Ukrainian woman labeled as “armed and dangerous” is now the main suspect in a bomb attack in Monaco that left a fellow Ukrainian oligarch seriously injured, alongside his son and mistress.

The Prosecutor General of Monaco, Stéphane Thibault, confirmed this evening that the suspect is a Ukrainian woman in her 30s, with her current residence listed in Germany.

Thibault announced on Thursday night, “An arrest warrant has been issued for the suspect, and an Interpol Red Notice will be circulated starting this evening.”

An experienced investigator revealed that the woman allegedly disguised herself as a man during the incident, yet was recognized by a witness.

The investigator mentioned that she is likely evading capture with accomplices in Italy and could possibly have fled to the Balkans.

The prime suspect is said to have targeted billionaire Vadym Yermolaiev, 58, his mistress, Anna Nasobina, 46, and their young son on Monday night.

The woman – who has not yet been named publicly – was filmed outside the ‘Sun’s Palace’ – a lavish apartment block owned by Mr Yermolaiev.

It was in the foyer, just before 9pm, that a dumped rucksack exploded after the woman triggered it using a mobile phone.

Ms Nasobina had both her legs amputated following the blast, while both she and Mr Yermolaiev suffered severe shrapnel wounds and burns.

‘The prime suspect was identified by a witness,’ said an investigating source. ‘She is a Ukrainian woman in her thirties.’

Footage from nearby surveillance cameras showed the woman wearing a black bucket hat fleeing on foot across the border to France, where there are no checkpoints.

She headed into the French town of Beausoleil, and then made her way to Italy, investigators believe.

‘She is armed and dangerous, and thought to be in the company of accomplices,’ said the source. ‘She should be approached with extreme caution.’

Judicial authorities in both France and Monaco have opened a criminal enquiry for ‘attempted murder’, ‘the planting of an explosive device on a public road with criminal intent’ and ‘criminal conspiracy.’

Cameras first picked up the suspect in the area on Monday morning, before she returned to place the bomb, according to the same security sources.

She is thought to have been ‘around 12 meters away’ when she triggered the device, said one.

The wounded boy has made a rapid recovery, and is currently providing evidence to police and prosecutors.

‘He is telling them exactly what he saw, although clearly his memory is very blurred,’ said a security source.

‘It appears that his mother took the full force of the blast, while he suffered relatively minor burns and shrapnel injuries.’

Ms Nasobina has been described in the past as Yermolaiev’s ‘common law wife’.

She is a Ukrainian national who comes from Yermolaiev’s home city of Dnipro, while spending a lot of time in England.

Nasobina describes herself as ‘London-based’ and is listed as a director of Wycombe Square Investments LLP in London since 2023, but frequently resides in Monaco, particularly during the summer.

She is also the daughter of the former first deputy state prosecutor of Dnipropetrovsk region.

Nasobina studied law at Dnipropetrovsk National University, followed by an International Institute of Management, before relocating to London.

She is a co-founder of Club Eclectique, a private members’ and literary-arts society registered in Oxford Street with a linked Monaco office. It was established in 2016.

The club’s events feature Russian entertainers with pro-Kremlin ties, and attendees include members of the Moscow diaspora in London.

One 2017 event she hosted, in honour of ballet legend Rudolf Nureyev, saw guests including Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Yasmin Mills, designer Julien Macdonald, party queen Jo Wood, singer Camilla Kerslake and actress Camilla Rutherford attend.

In turn, Yermolaiev’s wife, Anna Yermolaiev, uses a high-security family villa in St-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, the nearby French Riviera resort town which is the second most expensive residential location in the world, after Monaco.

It is likely that the suspect was using a so-called burner phone – one that can be bought relatively cheaply, without providing any kind of identification.

Such phones are frequently used by lawbreakers, and then disposed of once a crime has been committed.

Stéphane Thibault, the Monaco prosecutor who is leading the investigation in Monte Carlo, said: ‘We are attempting to arrest the suspect.’

Police and French Army helicopters with searchlights and numerous drones have all been seen in the search zone over the days and nights since the attack.

While there are theories that Ukraine’s SBU security service may have been behind the bombing, ‘a settling of scores’ by gangsters is currently the favoured line of investigation.

The blast signalled the first attack of its kind ever to take place on the so-called Rock tax haven, which is less than two-miles square and considered neutral territory.

Mr Yermolaiev had made multiple enemies over the years, and one of the reasons he moved to Monaco was because of the security it was meant to provide.

Seyar Kurshutov, a Ukrainian businessman from Crimea, who now spends a lot of time in Monaco said his friend was ‘obsessed with security’.

Kurshutov told Le Monde: ‘Vadim was living on a razor’s edge.’

Some of Yermolaiev’s most powerful enemies were made through a racket involving fake call centres.

Reports in France on Wednesday suggested that investigators are examining the possible involvement of the Security Service of Ukraine [SBU] in the suspected assassination bid, which left Yermolaiev, Nasobina and their son wounded.

The blast may have been a ‘warning’ rather than a deliberate attempt at murder.

Ukrainian police said previously that the oligarch may have been blown up over his alleged links to a €100million call centre fraud scheme.

Police sources claimed that the violent attack is directly linked to a network of fraudulent call centres in Dnipro, Ukraine, allegedly used to carry out large-scale financial scams across Europe.

The Yermolaiev family is alleged to have played a significant role in the scheme, with the oligarch’s name reportedly at the heart of a sprawling pan-European investigation into the clandestine call centres.

In late 2025, Artur Yermolaiev — 35, and Vadym Yermolaiev’s eldest son—was arrested in Cyprus for his role in the estimated £100m scheme.

Extradited to Estonia, where approximately 500 clients lost around £5million each, he was sentenced to five years in prison, with four months to be served behind bars.

‘He now lives in Israel,’ said Seyar Kurshutov.

Igor Komarov—a 28-year-old businessman involved in the call centres racket—was kidnapped, tortured, killed, and dismembered while on holiday in Bali, Indonesia, in March 2026.

Another security source said: ‘The killers have never been found. This gives an idea of the kind of enemies Yermolaiev is up against.’

Meanwhile, Ukrainian outlet Ukrainska Pravda reported that the attempted assassination stemmed from a failed agreement to divide territory and unpaid debts allegedly owed to organised crime bosses in Dnipro.

Like many oligarchs who became rich following the fall of the Soviet Union, Yermolaiev has faced accusations of criminality, including money laundering, which he denies.

Responding to reports linking him to ‘boiler room’ fraud, Theo Koshlyakov, the businessman’s legal assistant in Monaco, said: ‘To date, no legal proceedings have been initiated against Mr Yermolaiev in any jurisdiction’.

Yermolaiev has been living in the principality since 2021, according to reports.

In 2019, he renounced his Ukrainian citizenship and obtained a Cypriot passport, and in December 2023, he was subjected to personal sanctions by Kyiv.

France is assisting in a search for the suspect. An aide to France’s Interior Minister, Laurent Nuñez, said yesterday that police were working ‘to find the perpetrator, who has fled’.

There was a claim in the Nice-Matin news outlet that Yermolaiev planned to deliver a speech to the European Parliament alleging corruption in Ukraine.

CIA Under Scrutiny: Allegations of Non-Cooperation in COVID-19 Origins Investigation

0

WASHINGTON — According to a federal watchdog, the Central Intelligence Agency is not fully cooperating with an inquiry into the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly regarding the theory that it may have been sparked by a lab mishap.

In a letter obtained by The Post, Intelligence Community Inspector General Christopher Fox asserted that CIA Director John Ratcliffe has not provided essential documents. These records are crucial for investigating claims that the US government might have participated in what a recent agency official described as a “cover-up” related to the pandemic’s beginnings.

The watchdog’s investigation is focused on whether analysts, appointed by then-Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard to analyze alleged intelligence mishaps during President Biden’s tenure, faced obstruction.

Fox has previously sought answers from Ratcliffe regarding allegations that analysts’ digital activities and interactions with whistleblowers were being monitored. To date, he reports he has not received satisfactory responses.

The Inspector General expressed concern over the CIA director’s insistence that there was no evidence of illegal surveillance of the analysts collaborating with Gabbard’s team, known as the Director’s Initiatives Group.

Fox also claimed the CIA was not complying with the federal law that compels the agency to “coordinate” with the IC Office of Inspector General for its oversight of such matters “as appropriate.”

The June 16 letter was sent to Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley and laid out Fox’s issues with the CIA after the Iowa Republican drew attention to the “serious” allegations put forward by the agency officer who testified to a Senate committee the month before.

“Americans deserve a full accounting of COVID-19’s origins and the Intelligence Community’s (IC) response, especially whether whistleblowers were unlawfully monitored amid fallout from the virus,” Grassley told The Post.

“I appreciate the IC Inspector General’s ongoing work in this regard. However, it’s very concerning to me that entities within the Intelligence Community are obstructing the Inspector General’s honest efforts to perform a thorough investigation. Sunlight is the best disinfectant; the IC must come clean to the American people.”

Fox’s letter also clashed with Ratcliffe’s public statements regarding the origins of COVID-19. The CIA director has called for further transparency. As former DNI, he had been one of the only officials supporting the theory that the virus emerged from a lab accident in Wuhan, China, in late 2019.

But CIA special operations officer James Erdman III testified to Congress on May 13 that the US Intelligence Community exerted improper influence over assessments of COVID origins — and “illegally monitored” analysts tasked by Gabbard with looking into the matter.

That resulted in a 2023 CIA assessment that refused to take a side on the origins question — despite most of the analysts involved favoring the lab-leak hypothesis.

“Six of the seven technical experts say, ‘Yep, we still think it’s a lab leak,’” Erdman said of their deliberations. “And they were sticking to their guns. Management changed the analytic line.”

In the hearing, Erdman testified to the Senate Homeland Security Committee that Dr. Anthony Fauci and other IC leaders “influenced” the CIA and others involved in COVID intelligence analyses to suppress evidence that the virus most likely resulted from a lab leak in China.

“Dr. Fauci’s role in the cover-up was intentional,” he said, claiming the then-director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) put forward “a conflicted list of curated subject matter experts, public health officials and scientists” to prejudice intelligence assessment products in favor of a natural origin to SARS-CoV-2.

The CIA officer also testified that there “were Americans being spied upon illegally while executing duties directed by the president and under the authority of the Director of National Intelligence” as the DIG conducted a review of the assessments that Fauci and others swayed in 2020 and 2021.

At the time of Erdman’s testimony, a CIA spokesperson accused the Senate committee of having “acted in bad faith by subpoenaing an Agency officer … despite having already obtained closed-door testimony from the individual previously.”

The FBI, Energy Department and other federal officials determined that COVID-19 most likely originated in a lab leak years before the CIA changed its position from neutral.

That January 2025 CIA assessment, which was declassified by Ratcliffe but begun under former President Joe Biden’s spy chief William Burns, made it the third agency to back the lab leak theory.

“One of the things that I’ve talked about a lot is addressing the threat from China on a number of fronts, and that goes back to why a million Americans died and why the Central Intelligence Agency has been sitting on the sidelines for five years in not making an assessment about the origins of COVID,” Ratcliffe told Breitbart News at the time.

“I’ve been on record, as you know, in saying I think our intelligence, our science, and our common sense all really dictates that the origins of COVID was a leak at the Wuhan Institute of Virology,” he said.

Four other agencies including the National Intelligence Council maintain a zoonotic theory of pandemic’s origins — that the highly contagious virus naturally mutated from bats to infect humans, likely via an intermediary like pangolins — is the most likely cause.

As early as May 2020, scientific papers were circulating inside the IC that backed the lab leak theory, but senior National Intelligence Council officers allowed Fauci to “inject himself” into the debate as a subject-matter expert, overruling intelligence analysts, Erdman noted.

A former IC intelligence analyst also told The Post Thursday that “the IC analysts were essentially in lockstep with the WHO’s position, which was the same as the Chinese’s” and that Fauci wasn’t the only “compromised” official who influenced their work.

Ralph Baric, who along with a Wuhan Institute of Virology scientist helped author a “blueprint” for engineering SARS-CoV-2, also consulted for the IC’s Biological Sciences Expert Group.

“It is highly plausible Fauci et al provided synthetic viral capability the Chinese government could use for military purposes,” the ex-intel analyst said, “Baric directly; Fauci indirectly via grants.”

“My concern is,” the ex-intel analyst said, “that I think there is a very pervasive Chinese influence at the IC at different levels,” adding that Fauci and others got “played like a Stradivarius [violin].”

“What needs to be uncovered is who’s driving this natural origin thing and suppressing all this other stuff with the lab leak and why?” the former analyst said.

An April 22 assessment from the IC OIG, which was also obtained by The Post, noted that Fox’s office had recently received new allegations of “conflicts of interest” marring past COVID intelligence products.

That assessment also “identified that external agencies have information IC OIG does not currently possess, and that such information is likely material to a comprehensive assessment of allegations relating to the origin of COVID-19.”

“This special review confirms the existence of serious allegations regarding the integrity of U.S. Government personnel and processes related to the assessment of the origin of COVID-19,” it concluded.

Reps for the CIA did not respond to a request for comment.

Florida Board Enforces Ban on College Enrollment for Undocumented Students

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WFLA) — A significant roadblock may soon dash the hopes of many students dreaming of a college education in Florida. This week, the Florida Board of Education decided to prohibit students who lack legal immigration status from enrolling in the state’s 28 colleges and adult education programs.

Almost every member of the board voted in favor of this significant change, leaving Florida students and immigrant communities rallying in opposition.

“These young individuals are products of Florida’s communities. They’ve attended our K-12 schools, studied alongside their peers, volunteered their time, worked jobs, and challenged themselves with AP courses. We’ve encouraged them all along. Now, we’re saying they’ve reached a barrier they can’t cross,” expressed Felipe Sousa-Lazaballet from the Florida Immigration Coalition.

Supporters of immigrant rights warn that the repercussions extend beyond the students themselves, suggesting the state’s education system could face a $15 million shortfall from lost tuition and fees as a result of the new policy.

This controversial proposal follows closely on the heels of the Florida Board of Governors’ recent initial move to introduce a similar restriction at universities across the state.

Last year the legislature voted to remove in-state tuition for undocumented students, repealing a law that had been in place since 2014.

“Now that we’ve addressed the tuition issue and aren’t giving the tuition breaks to some here illegally, then this is the next step,” said Governor Ron DeSantis.

Supporters say college seats should be reserved for Florida residents and U.S. citizens.

“I would rather have that spot go to a Florida resident,” said DeSantis.

A legislative oversight committee is now stepping in, and has sent a letter to the Department of Education questioning whether education officials have the legal authority to make these changes without action from the legislature.

Video Captures Critical Moments Leading to Fatal Shooting of Army Veteran in Walmart Parking Lot Altercation

A harrowing cellphone video has emerged showing the fatal shooting of a Florida Army veteran during a dispute over a parking spot at a Walmart, officials reported.

The victim, 62-year-old Bart Diguglielmo, was pronounced dead after being shot around 12:28 p.m. on Tuesday in the Walmart parking lot located on West McNab Road in North Lauderdale. The Broward County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the incident.

Authorities revealed that an argument erupted between Diguglielmo and an adult woman over the parking space, escalating into a deadly confrontation.

The woman involved stayed at the scene and cooperated with the authorities. She explained to investigators that she fired the gun in self-defense, according to the statements released by the Broward County Sheriff’s Office.

Her identity has not been released, and homicide detectives said the case will be presented to the Broward County State Attorney’s Office to determine whether criminal charges will be filed.

Authorities have not released additional details about what led to the confrontation or said whether investigators believe the woman’s claim of self-defense. Prosecutors will review the completed investigation before deciding whether charges are warranted.

Additional cellphone footage obtained by Local 10 News appears to show Diguglielmo walking toward the woman, who appears to be holding a cellphone in one hand. As he approaches, she raises her other arm, appearing to point a handgun at him. After a brief standoff, a single gunshot rings out.

Footage from another angle, recorded without sound, appears to show Diguglielmo doubling over at the waist before lowering himself to the ground as what appears to be blood becomes visible through the front of his shirt.

A third angle shows the pair engaged in what appears to be an argument after a vehicle pulled out of a nearby parking space. The footage appears to show the woman backing away with the handgun pointed at Diguglielmo as he raises his hands.

The video ends with the woman remaining at the scene until Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies arrived and detained her for questioning.

Diguglielmo was transported to Broward Health Medical Center, where he later died from his injuries, authorities said.

The investigation remains ongoing.

Donna Kelce’s Unimpressed Entrance at MSG Sparks Buzz

0

As the buzz around Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift’s impending nuptials electrifies New York City, Donna Kelce, mother of the groom-to-be, found herself back in the bustling city on Thursday.

The 73-year-old was a picture of humility as she blended with fellow travelers upon landing solo at LaGuardia Airport, mere hours ahead of the couple’s festivities at Madison Square Garden. This appearance comes two months after exclusive reports from the Daily Mail highlighted how Donna and Swift’s mother, Andrea, have been subtly edged out of the wedding planning.

Contrasting sharply with Taylor Swift’s penchant for luxurious travel, always accompanied by her entourage and security, Donna arrived on a commercial flight, wheeling her own suitcase. Her solitary presence at the airport is a stark visual against Swift’s billionaire lifestyle.

With a somber expression, she ventured into the city just hours before the rehearsal dinner at the Infosys Theater inside MSG. It’s been disclosed that the specifics of the wedding itinerary remain a mystery to her.

“They haven’t shared much with Donna; she’s just going with the flow,” a source revealed to the Daily Mail. “They’re informing her only about where and when she needs to be present, and a driver has been arranged for her,” the source added.

‘That’s how it is with everybody, even the people really close to them. When they get to where they need to be, they’re told where they’re going next.

While her son Travis Kelce and soon-to-be daughter-in-law Taylor Swift are prepping for their NYC wedding in style, Donna Kelce came swiftly back down to earth as she jetted into the city on Thursday

‘So she doesn’t really know a lot about the plans, because she hasn’t been told. I think that’s their way of making sure that things aren’t leaked. Everyone is on a “need to know” basis.

‘I think she likes it that way. It’s not a stress. Travis told her what type of clothes she’d need and basically everything is going to be easy for her. She’s very excited to experience it as it happens, with some mystery along the way.’

It is understood Donna immediately rushed to MSG after landing.

The Daily Mail has contacted representatives for comment and has yet to hear back.

While a plethora of A-listers have descended on NYC for the wedding, Travis’s father Ed and brother Jason, along with wife Kylie, have yet to make a public appearance.

Donna’s solo stroll comes after insiders dished to the Daily Mail on how Swift and Kelce have shut out their parents, instead arranging the big day between themselves and a wedding planner.

‘Both sets of parents are all really happy and think getting married is the right thing for them to do because they’re old school and wanted him to put a ring on Taylor’s finger,’ an insider told us. ‘But none of them are involved in the wedding planning, although surprisingly Travis is.’

‘Taylor’s not the official wedding planner, but most of the ideas are hers. She’s used to taking control. This will be her big day and along with Travis she’ll be the mastermind,’ the source continued.

‘She literally runs everything past him. If they don’t agree on something, they scrap it.’

The decision may have come as a surprise to both sets of parents who have been so involved in their children’s lives thus far.

Andrea and Scott Swift, who got married in 1988, sold their family home in Pennsylvania and relocated to Nashville in 2004 to support Swift’s dreams of becoming a country star, with both taking active roles in her management.

Meanwhile, Donna and Ed Kelce, who married in the 1970s, have talked openly about staying together for as long as they did before their divorce for the benefit of their boys Travis and retired NFL star Jason, and how they would ‘tag team’ to ensure their sons never missed out on opportunities.

So dedicated is Donna to her sons’ careers, she once traveled 1,300 miles to see both compete in their respective playoff games on the same day.

And the two families have established close bonds with one another since the Swift-Kelce fairytale.

‘Taylor and Travis are big on family, so when they can have any functions, they want their parents there and they love it,’ said another well-placed insider. ‘Family events are often around the holidays, or when they’re all at a game, they will often go back to the house and eat together. They will continue the family time when they can. They don’t do it every time, because sometimes Travis just wants to go home and relax.’

The insider described the two families as ‘pretty normal’ and claimed ‘everyone gets along.’

When it comes to future mothers-in-law Donna and Andrea, a second insider added: ‘They talk. Together with Taylor they’re all in contact, talking about everyday things, like recipes or a TV show recommendation or plans to hang out. They’re definitely becoming great friends.’

Swift and Kelce’s wedding guests have been left in the dark about the exact ceremony location ahead of the couple’s anticipated nuptials.

A source previously claimed that lucky guests who scored an invitation to the big day have not yet been informed of the specific location.

Those who received an invite were told to be in NYC on Thursday and Friday with no other information being provided.

Swift and Kelce are ‘putting their guests on hold for a couple of days,’ the source said, before claiming that they have spent ‘millions’ on the wedding.

An insider informed the Daily Mail in early June that Swift and Kelce had embraced the idea of a ‘spectacle’ wedding and selected Madison Square Garden as the venue.

NFL Scout Blaise Taylor Convicted of Murdering Pregnant Girlfriend; Defense Plans to Appeal

In a significant legal decision, a jury in Tennessee has found former NFL scout Blaise Taylor guilty of murdering his pregnant girlfriend, as announced on July 1. However, Taylor’s legal team has already signaled their intention to appeal the conviction.

Defense attorney Letitia Quinones-Hollins issued a statement to USA Today expressing respect for the judicial process but disagreement with the verdict. “Blaise maintains his innocence, and we plan to appeal this decision to prove he did not commit these crimes,” she declared.

According to ESPN, Taylor was convicted of second-degree murder in the death of his girlfriend, Jade Benning, as well as first-degree murder for her unborn child. Additionally, he faced two counts of first-degree felony murder.

While the jury in Nashville has recommended a life sentence, Taylor’s formal sentencing has been scheduled for September 9.

According to the Metro Nashville Police Department, Benning tragically passed away on March 6, 2023, coinciding with her 25th birthday, at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Taylor called 911 around 9:38 p.m. claiming his girlfriend was suffering from an allergic reaction, however, investigators concluded after a months-long investigation that he poisoned Benning without her knowledge, killing her and their unborn child.

Prosecutors argued in their opening statements, per WSMV, that Taylor had been unhappy about the pregnancy.

Benning died of acute cocaine toxicity, the outlet reported, and was discovered by a paramedic lying face down her bed with pink foam coming out of her mouth.

It took the jury less than three hours to convict the the Tennessee TItans scout and former defensive back at Arkansas State.

Taylor has continued to proclaim his innocence through his attorney.

“We understand and respect the pain that Ms. Benning’s family and friends feel over her tragic death and the death of her unborn baby,” Quinones-Hollins told USA Today, “but putting an innocent man behind bars is also a tragedy.”

Edward Norton and Penélope Cruz Deliver Riveting Performances in ‘The Invite’: A Hilarious Dramedy Review

RATING : 9 / 10

Pros
Cons

In an era where independent films like “Obsession” trump giant blockbusters such as “The Mandalorian and Grogu,” discussions have surged about the survival of theatrical horror releases. Yet, comedies are often underrated as prime candidates for the big screen. Just as horror movies gain extra intensity from audiences’ shared gasps, comedies enhance their humor when laughter fills a theater.

Enter “The Invite,” a fresh comedy-drama from Olivia Wilde, famed for directing “Booksmart.” This film not only conjures genuine humor but dives into unexpected emotional territories. What starts with absurd antics crescendos into complexity and poignant moments, powered by the eccentric performances of Edward Norton and Penélope Cruz. While initially appearing light, “The Invite” evolves into the kind of thoughtful comedy that echoes the charm of a cinematic golden age.

The dinner party: or an introvert’s worst nightmare

What do you do when you feel like your relationship might be in a little bit of a rut, and you need to do one single thing out of the ordinary just to prove that you still can? Well, if you’re Angela (Olivia Wilde), you invite your sexy neighbors Hawk and Piña (played by Edward Norton and Penélope Cruz, respectively) over for a proper grown-up dinner party. (Much to the horror of Seth Rogen’s Joe, whose initial reaction of excitement at the appearance of an expertly crafted charcuterie board quickly fades when he realizes there are social strings attached.)

But what starts as a fairly standard dinner party doesn’t quite stay that way. As the night goes on, things begin to change in tone, thanks in part to Hawk and Piña’s unusual interests and Angela’s almost desperate desire for them to like her. She wants to break her and Joe out of their routine and, well … she definitely succeeds on that front. Despite the billing of “The Invite” as a comedy (and don’t worry, it is), there’s also a lot of psychosexual tension at play. Angela’s machinations with her neighbors — who in many ways are foils to her and Joe — are deeply layered, and it’s unclear if she wants to be with them or simply be them.

The staging of “The Invite” is incredibly intimate — it takes place entirely in Angela and Joe’s cozy apartment, and features just the four actors on screen talking among themselves for a little over an hour and 40 minutes. (If it sounds more like a play than a film to you, good eye: It has its roots in Spanish playwright and director Cesc Gay’s “Sentimental,” which was later turned into a Spanish-language film “The People Upstairs.”)

A classic four-hander

With a project as pared down as this, there’s nowhere for the actors to hide. They need to be firing on all cylinders for the film to work. And although these particular four actors might not seem like they would bounce off each other naturally at first glance, they have a remarkable rapport on screen, each finding their moments to shine. At times, it feels like they’re all acting in slightly different versions of the film, but surprisingly, it works.

Edward Norton and Olivia Wilde lean into the comedic elements of “The Invite” more, with Norton zeroing in on the farcical nature of relationships and Wilde delivering a much broader performance. Penélope Cruz settles into her role with charisma and sex appeal, a fact that Angela hardly fails to notice. (The dynamic between these two very different women is one of the most interesting in the film.) And Seth Rogen, who after his work in “The Fabelmans” is quickly developing a knack for this sort of understated performance, taps into something subtle yet earnest and heartfelt. He in particular mines the depths of his character, producing gems seemingly out of thin air.

If you’re looking for action or perhaps a more traditional sex comedy, “The Invite” might not strike the right chords for you. But as a dramedy that taps into the inherent humor of what it means to be married and the choices we make about whether to grow together or apart in our relationships, it’s an unexpectedly elegant production that makes the most of its four talented performers. In the end, “The Invite” manages to perfectly thread the needle between begging for laughs and finding genuinely honest and authentic moments.

“The Invite” hits theaters on July 10.

Ex-Olympian Faces Felony Charges for Alleged Reflecting Pool Vandalism

WASHINGTON (AP) — A former Olympic athlete faced indictment on Thursday over a criminal charge related to what President Donald Trump has termed as damage inflicted on the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. This incident is amidst a renovation effort that Trump initiated, which has encountered various challenges.

David Hearn, an ex-Olympic canoeist, was formally charged in a Washington, D.C. court with a single count of property destruction.

U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, Jeanine Pirro, claimed that Hearn intentionally tore up the recently applied sealant on the pool, describing the act as causing over $1,000 in damage. She alleged that Hearn “forcefully and violently” removed the liner with both hands and behaved aggressively towards an employee who intervened.

“The evidence in this case is substantial,” Pirro stated, noting that approximately six additional misdemeanor arrests have been carried out by authorities.

In response, Norm Eisen, a co-founder of the Democracy Defenders Fund, and Mary Dohrmann, a senior counsel at the Washington Litigation Group, issued a statement. They represent Hearn and denounced the charges as “outrageous,” suggesting that they should cause concern for all Americans. Eisen and Dohrmann argue that the case exemplifies “the misuse of government power against an ordinary citizen based on a fabricated narrative.”

“I’m a curious citizen,” Hearn said in a telephone interview last month. “I reached down to see what it felt like. It was very rubbery.”

Hearn, 67, of Bethesda, Maryland, owned a company that made composite materials used to build watercraft.

Saying that he stopped by the pool during a 64-mile bike ride, Hearn said he was detained by National Guard troops and Park Police for five hours before being released.

Trump said last month that federal authorities made “multiple arrests” of people he accused of vandalizing the Reflecting Pool as he struggled to explain why the $16-million rehabilitation project he launched for the nation’s 250th anniversary seemingly backfired. Without providing any substantiation, he also said vandals dumped fertilizer into the pool and slashed the coating with a box cutter.

In subsequent days, National Guard members and U.S. Park Police patrolled the deck around the Reflecting Pool as Trump’s administration faced a self-imposed deadline to fix a botched renovation before the nation’s 250th anniversary celebration. Contractors and federal workers used chemicals and ozone nanobubbles to combat an algae bloom, and Trump has said that problems most likely require draining the pool again for liner repairs.

Deadly Attack in Kyiv: 13 Killed in Largest Assault on Ukrainian Capital Since Russia’s Invasion

0

In a devastating blow early Thursday, Russian missiles and drones ravaged apartment structures in Kyiv, leaving at least 13 dead and injuring dozens more. The city’s mayor described this as the most significant assault on the Ukrainian capital to date.

Although Russia has repeatedly targeted Ukrainian cities, including Kyiv, with missile and drone barrages throughout its protracted invasion lasting over four years, Vitali Klitschko, the mayor of Kyiv, stated that this overnight assault surpassed all previous ones in its severity.

In a somber announcement on social media, Klitschko proclaimed July 3rd as a Day of Mourning in Kyiv, paying tribute to those who perished in the unprecedented attack. Meanwhile, rescue operations continued as workers sifted through the remnants of a demolished apartment complex.

According to Klitschko, the attack resulted in at least 13 fatalities and 86 injuries.

Reporters from the Agence-France Press (AFP) witnessed more than 12 blasts in the central and eastern parts of Kyiv. Amidst the chaos, residents hurriedly sought refuge in metro stations, some accompanied by children and pets.

In the morning, locals stood on the rubble of destroyed apartment blocks, ripped open by the barrage, as smoke poured over the Kyiv skyline.

Blasts started echoing out over the Ukrainian capital late on Wednesday, lasting into the early hours of Thursday as Russian missiles and drones rained down on residential areas in the centre of the city.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had earlier warned that Russia was preparing a “massive attack” and urged citizens to take extra care.

“I urge our people to be especially careful, to protect themselves, their children, and, of course, their families; to use shelters and heed air raid alerts in Ukraine — this is very important,” he told a news conference.

He said Russian President Vladimir Putin “has been preparing this massive strike against Ukraine for some time now”.

Ukraine has also stepped up long-range drone attacks inside Russia in recent weeks, targeting energy infrastructure and military targets.

Russian officials have reported repeated strikes in border regions, while Moscow has said its air defences had intercepted hundreds of drones from Ukraine in recent days.

A large, deep bomb crater filled with dirt and debris sits in the foreground, surrounded by a crowd of people inspecting the aftermath near a park and residential buildings.

Russia’s defence ministry confirmed on Thursday it had launched a “massive strike” on Kyiv in what it called a retaliation to the Ukrainian counter-attacks.

Russia fired 496 drones and 74 missiles — including hard-to-intercept ballistic projectiles — Ukraine’s air force said.

It said it shot down 48 of the missiles and 476 drones.

Ukraine urges more support, Patriot license

Following the attack, Ukrainian officials sent requests for military aid to the country’s allies, with Zelenskyy asking the United States for licences to manufacture Patriot air defence missiles.

“Air defence supplies for Ukraine are an absolute and critical priority … We also very much count on a decision by the United States regarding licences for Patriots and other forms of cooperation,” Zelenskyy said in a post on Facebook on Thursday.

Ukrainian foreign minister Andriy Sybiga wrote on social media that allies must “not delay decisions on air defense for Ukraine!”

“This is our main request to our partners after Kyiv suffered a night of horror,” he wrote.
