Comedy Legend and Sinatra’s Opening Act Tom Dreesen Passes Away at 86

0

Tom Dreesen, a trailblazing figure in comedy known for creating one of the nation’s pioneering interracial stand-up duos with Tim Reid, and later serving as the opening act for Frank Sinatra, passed away on Wednesday at the age of 86.

His publicist, Lori De Waal, confirmed that Dreesen died at his residence in Los Angeles, though the cause of death has not been disclosed.

Dreesen and Reid crossed paths in Chicago and launched their act “Tim and Tom” in 1969. At a time when racial tensions were palpable, their performances cleverly addressed societal issues, fostering dialogue and understanding across diverse audiences. Their partnership lasted into the mid-1970s. Reid later achieved solo fame as DJ Venus Flytrap on the hit sitcom “WKRP in Cincinnati,” a show where Dreesen also made a guest appearance.

Comedian and filmmaker Mike Binder expressed his admiration on X, recalling how a Tim and Tom album he discovered in his youth profoundly influenced his life, calling it “so great.”

Following his split from Reid, Dreesen developed a successful solo career, making over 500 appearances on national television, including 60 on “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson.” He frequently appeared on “The Late Show with David Letterman,” occasionally stepping in as guest host. Their camaraderie dated back to the early 1970s when both were regulars at The Comedy Store in West Hollywood, California.

Dreesen’s final TV appearance came last week on “Comics Unleashed with Byron Allen,” which replaced Stephen Colbert’s canceled CBS late-night show.

Dreesen was Sinatra’s opening act for 14 years and became close with the entertainer.

“If he loved you, he worshipped the ground you walked on,” Dreesen told The Desert Sun newspaper in 2014. ”In a lot of ways, he was like a father to me. I didn’t have a father that really cared that much where I was and what I did. But Frank would give me advice and counsel, and then he was a buddy in a lot of ways. I thought the world of him.”

Dressen also toured with Sinatra’s fellow Rat Pack member Sammy Davis Jr., as well as Liza Minnelli, Smokey Robinson, Gladys Knight and Tony Orlando.

“He was one of the most brilliant comedians of all time. Tonight, he’ll once again be opening for Dean, Frank and Sammy,” Deana Martin, a daughter of Dean Martin, posted on X.

In 2008, he co-wrote the book “Tim and Tom: An American Comedy Act in Black and White” and in 2020 he authored his memoir.

Dreesen acted in such TV shows as “Columbo,” “Murder, She Wrote,” and “Touched by an Angel.” His film roles included “Spaceballs,” “Man on the Moon” and “Trouble With the Curve,” as well as the HBO movies “The Rat Pack” and “Lansky.”

Dreesen was active in charitable work, motivational speaking and veterans’ causes, including serving as ambassador for the Gary Sinise Foundation.

“America lost one of our great comedians and patriots, and I lost a dear friend,” Sinise posted on X.

He was born on Sept. 11, 1939, in Chicago and raised as one of eight children in suburban Harvey. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy at age 17 and after getting out in 1960 he returned home to work a series of jobs, including selling insurance.

Dreesen is survived by daughters Amy and Jennifer from his marriage to Maryellen Subock, which ended in divorce in 1984, as well as seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son Tommy.

Daycare Owner Convicted in Tragic Infant Death During Nap Time

A California daycare owner was visibly emotional in court as she confessed to her role in the tragic death of an infant, whose head became fatally trapped between a plastic cot and the crib’s railing.

Stacy Lee Snow, 54, entered a guilty plea to involuntary manslaughter following the death of the 16-month-old girl, who was discovered unresponsive in her crib on April 8, 2025.

During Friday’s sentencing, Snow received a three-year county jail sentence. She faced the grieving family, expressing deep remorse for the child’s death and acknowledging that it was a preventable tragedy.

“I am ashamed of my negligence,” she stated, her voice filled with emotion.

“I will not ask for your forgiveness because I do not deserve it.”

Snow owned and operated an at-home daycare center called Snow Angels Childcare and Preschool in El Cajon, California, for 13 years, and the morning the baby girl died in her care was just the fourth time she had taken her for the day.

Prosecutors said the infant was ‘fussier’ than usual that day, so Snow put her into her crib for a nap to try and calm her down.

She then covered the crib with a plastic cot and a mesh center to prevent her from climbing out, before leaving the girl in the room alone with the door closed.

The baby girl was found an hour later with her head wedged between the plastic cot and a railing on the crib, and a medical examiner found she died by asphyxiation.

Under California law, Snow was required to check on the baby girl at least every 15 minutes while she was in her care.

The baby girl’s mother, who remained anonymous during the court proceedings, also reportedly told Snow not to let the girl sleep while she was at her daycare, as she wanted her to stay awake through the day to tire her out.

But Snow admitted to ignoring this as she left the girl alone in the room for at least an hour, telling police she returned to the room to find the girl passed out and wedged in her cot.

Snow said she tried desperately to perform CPR as paramedics raced to the scene.

The San Diego Sheriff’s Office said first responders found the infant ‘on the living room floor’ when they arrived.

The baby girl was raced to a local hospital where she was tragically pronounced dead, and a medical examiner ruled the cause of death to be ‘accidental asphyxia’, per Law & Crime.

At her sentencing, the judge slammed Snow for her ‘intentional and negligent choices’, and handed her the maximum sentence allowed for involuntary manslaughter charges.

The judge branded the infant’s death ‘a tragedy that was absolutely and wholly avoidable.’

Snow apologized to the victim’s mother in her own sentencing statement, telling her: ‘There is not a day that goes by that I don’t think about this tragic incident and all the ways it could have been prevented had I not been so careless with my actions.’

As she was sentenced to three years in prison, Snow apologized to the victim's mother and told her:  'I am ashamed of my negligence. I will not ask for your forgiveness because I do not deserve it'

As part of her three year sentence, Snow will serve the final six months released under mandatory supervision, and her childcare license was revoked.

The victim’s mother said at the sentencing that the tragedy devastated her family, saying that she has still not tidied her baby’s toys or clothes over a year later.

‘I still cannot bring myself to pack away her belongings because doing so feels like losing her all over again,’ she said.

‘I can’t shake the last time that I said goodbye.’

The daycare owner is now facing a pending wrongful death lawsuit from the victim’s family.

She had operated the daycare for 13 years, and before the child’s death she had no citations or issues with the Department of Social Services, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported.

Jacksonville Woman Admits to Assaulting State Trooper During ICE Operation: Shocking Details Inside

Jennifer Cruz could be sentenced to a prison term of up to 20 years and fined as much as $250,000.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — In a federal courtroom, a woman from Jacksonville admitted guilt after an incident where, according to prosecutors, she attacked a state trooper during a clash with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents on Beach Boulevard.

On Wednesday, Jennifer Cruz acknowledged her guilt to charges of assaulting a federal officer and others assisting them.

Though the date for her sentencing has not yet been set, Cruz is looking at the possibility of up to 20 years behind bars or a hefty fine reaching $250,000.

The arrest took place on January 13, 2026, when Cruz paused to record an immigration enforcement activity occurring near Mi Pueblo. The situation intensified after troopers found she was driving with a suspended license. According to court records, Cruz resisted law enforcement’s request for her car keys, leading to a confrontation.

After being restrained by ICE agents, Cruz was arrested by Florida Highway Patrol and charged with multiple counts of resisting law enforcement with violence and battery on a law enforcement officer. She was able to post bond and was released from Duval County Jail; however, she was arrested shortly after on a federal charge of resisting an officer.

Court documents state that the agent who was struck had received injuries to multiple parts of their face and left hand and was taken to a local hospital.

Cruz is due back in Duval County court later this month regarding the state-level charges.

Meet Tony Popovic: The New Face of Socceroos Coaching and His Vision for Australian Soccer

0

In brief

  • Tony Popovic took over as the Socceroos’ head coach in October 2024.
  • He is known for a defensive set-up that absorbs pressure and launches fierce counterattacks.

“Driven, focused, single-minded, with a great attention to detail.”

This is how Perth Glory’s media manager, Gareth Morgan, characterizes Socceroos head coach Tony Popovic, reflecting on the time when Popovic led the A-League team between 2018 and 2020.

These attributes not only propelled Popovic to the World Cup as a player but have also paved the way for his return as a coach two decades later, marking him as the first Australian to both play for and coach the national team on football’s grandest stage.

Now in his second year steering the Australian men’s national team, the 52-year-old Popovic is recognized for implementing a disciplined defensive strategy that withstands pressure and initiates powerful counterattacks.

This distinct style was evident during the Socceroos’ 2-0 triumph over Türkiye in their World Cup opener on Sunday.

While World Cup training camps are kept under wraps to protect tactics, Morgan offered a glimpse into the demanding routine the Socceroos are likely following as they take to football’s biggest stage.

“I’ve never seen a defence worked so hard on the training ground,” Morgan told SBS Croatian of Popovic’s managerial style at Perth Glory.

“We played a back five at the time, and they were just drilled relentlessly day in, day out.

“It was almost like autopilot in terms of knowing where the other players were.”

Morgan said Popovic was the most “detail-driven” coach he had worked with, revealing he closely monitored players’ diets and fitness programs.

“I’m pretty sure he banned tomato ketchup because of the sugar content,” he said.

“He’s massive, absolutely massive on nutrition, recovery, doing all the right things.

“He sort of took that to a new level, really, at our club when he was here.”

Morgan said players always knew where they stood with Popovic.

“There were non-negotiables in terms of training and punctuality and a lot of other things like that. Certainly, he ran a tight ship, I think it’s fair to say,” he said.

“He has a presence about him, and I think the physicality helps that, there’s an intensity about him as well.”

That uncompromising approach also extends to team selection.

While favouring a conservative set-up, Popovic has also shown he is willing to take bold selection calls.

On Sunday, he made arguably the biggest gamble of his managerial career, benching veteran goalkeeper and captain Mat Ryan in favour of Patrick Beach, who was making just his third international appearance.

Vice-captain Jackson Irvine was also left out, with Popovic selecting a youthful line-up that included 21-year-old Paul Okon-Engstler and 20-year-old Nestory Irankunda.

The gamble paid off. Beach made eight saves, including a full-stretch dive to tip a powerful strike onto the post, while Irankunda opened the scoring after a perfect overhead pass from Okon-Engstler.

Who is Tony Popovic?

Popovic started his playing career at Sydney United in 1989, making 162 appearances over seven seasons, before moving to Sanfrecce Hiroshima in Japan’s top division.

The centre-back moved to English side Crystal Palace, also playing a season in Qatar before returning to Australia to play for Sydney FC, where he retired in 2008.

He also played 58 games for Australia and appeared at the 2006 World Cup, making him the first Australian to represent the Socceroos as both a player and head coach.

After coaching Western Sydney Wanderers to the A-League premiership and AFC Champions League title, Popovic had spells in Türkiye, Perth, Greece and Melbourne before replacing Graham Arnold as Socceroos coach in 2024.

Arnold took the Socceroos to the Round of 16 in Qatar in 2022 but oversaw a disastrous start to the third round of their qualifying campaign, which included a shock loss to Bahrain and a 0-0 draw against then-129th-ranked Indonesia.

Popovic’s appointment was met with mixed reactions from fans, but he oversaw an unbeaten run through qualifying — including seven consecutive wins — steering the Socceroos to automatic qualification for the first time since 2014.

His contract extension — announced before Sunday’s win over Türkiye — was somewhat of a surprise, given a weak World Cup campaign would put Popovic firmly in the coaching shop window.

But after a dream start to the tournament, Popovic is clearly enjoying the moment.

“I’m loving every part of the journey, and every day is a new day, and there’s new challenges and it’s all exciting,” Popovic recently told Australian Associated Press in camp.

“I do pinch myself sometimes. I’m blessed with the greatest job that you can have.

“It’s a group of young men that really have a strong ambition and the staff that wants to help be the best we can be. So I think I’m very fortunate.”

SLED Joins Investigation After Body Resembling Missing South Carolina Personal Trainer Discovered

0

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED), which handles significant criminal cases in the state, has joined a probe following the grim discovery of a body in a forested region. This area is notably where a missing woman was last observed almost a week prior.

Authorities unearthed the body after an extensive six-day search for Elena Katherine Moore, a 39-year-old personal trainer. Moore was reported missing since Thursday evening after departing from a Planet Fitness gym located in Lexington.

The Lexington Police Department (LPD) announced that the body has yet to be officially identified, however, the clothing matches that of the missing individual in question.

With the case now elevated to an active death investigation, SLED’s involvement aims to ascertain the cause of death and verify the person’s identity.

Elena Katherine Moore, last witnessed leaving the gym and heading towards a nearby wooded area in Lexington, South Carolina, has been the focal point of this ongoing investigation, as stated by the authorities.

According to LPD Chief Terrence Green, authorities located the body Wednesday after receiving a citizen tip that led investigators to conduct a targeted search.

“At approximately 2:48 p.m. we found an unidentified body that fits the clothing description of our missing person. We are still waiting on the coroner to identify her.”

The body was reportedly wearing a “similar green outfit” consistent with what Moore was seen wearing on surveillance footage the night before she disappeared.

Officials said they are still awaiting formal identification from the coroner.

The Lexington County Coroner’s Office said an autopsy will be scheduled in the coming days and that the process is expected to take some time.

Elena Katherine Moore signed in at the Planet Fitness on Whiteford Way around 6:40 p.m. Thursday and was later seen walking away from the facility toward a wooded area behind a nearby Lowe’s Home Improvement store, authorities said. (Lexington Police Department)

“In reference to the body found in Lexington in the area of Old Cherokee Road and Northlake Drive. Coroner Margaret Fisher can confirm the body of a female matching the clothing description of the missing person, Elena K. Moore has been found,” the office said in a statement.

“No positive identification has been made as of this time. We will await positive identification before any further information is released. No cause of death has been determined”

When asked if foul play was suspected, the police said, “Again, it’s an active investigation and we are having SLED investigate that.”

Moore was first reported missing last Friday, prompting a large-scale search that included multiple agencies and the deployment of a drone.

She was last seen Thursday night in surveillance footage walking through the Publix parking lot at 100 Old Cherokee Road.

In the video, she is seen wearing an olive-green zip-up hoodie and black athletic pants, the same outfit she was reportedly wearing when she left Planet Fitness.

Authorities said that in the days leading up to her disappearance, Moore exhibited behavior that was out of character, including a sudden absence and an abrupt change in social media presence, according to ABC News.

Tropical Storm Arthur Sets Sights on Gulf Coast: Brace for Heavy Rain Impact

0

MIAMI — The Atlantic hurricane season has officially kicked off with the formation of Tropical Storm Arthur in the Gulf of Mexico, near the middle Texas coast. According to the National Weather Service, Arthur is the first storm to earn a name this season.

Warnings for tropical storms are now in effect for the upper Texas and Louisiana coastlines. Residents in these areas should prepare for storm conditions within the next 12 to 24 hours.

Initially, a low-pressure system with winds around 30 mph was detected at approximately 5 a.m. ET on Wednesday. However, by mid-morning, the winds intensified to over 39 mph, prompting its classification as a tropical storm.

Arthur is projected to trace along the coast today before making its way inland by Wednesday night. As it moves over land in Louisiana, it is expected to weaken. Nevertheless, winds could reach up to 40 mph along the upper Texas and Louisiana coasts this afternoon as the storm progresses inland.

The storm poses a significant rainfall threat, with anticipated totals ranging from 5 to 10 inches. Some areas may experience isolated amounts up to 20 inches through early Friday. This heavy rainfall is expected from the Texas and Louisiana coasts stretching into central Louisiana, and reaching parts of Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and the Florida panhandle.

Life-threatening flash flooding is possible, according to the NWS. A flood watch is in effect from Houston to Atlanta.

Over localized areas, storms may dump 2 to 4 inches of rain per hour. This could occur in areas including the region near Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and within the southern half of Mississippi, forecasts show.

Storm surge combined with the normal tide will cause normally dry areas near the coast to be flooded by rising waters moving inland from the shoreline. Between 2 to 4 feet of storm surge is possible from Port Bolivar, Texas, to Morgan City, Louisiana.

Isolated weak tornados are possible in southeast Texas, southern Louisiana and southern Mississippi Wednesday afternoon through night.

By 7 a.m. Thursday, the storm will bring heavy, potentially flooding rain to the Baton Rouge, Louisiana, area. The storm will have moved further east by 8 p.m. Thursday, bringing heavy rain from Atlanta to Montgomery to Mobile, Alabama.

On Friday morning, heavy rain will be possible in the Florida panhandle and parts of Carolinas by around 7 a.m.

Dancing with the Stars’ Jackson Olson Enjoys Disney Adventure with Maggie Sajak

In a recent conversation with Us Weekly, he emphasized the importance of planning and making time for one another, especially in the early stages of a relationship. “It’s essential to create memorable experiences together,” he noted, underscoring the unique opportunity that comes with the beginning of a romantic journey.

He elaborated on the joy he finds in their connection, saying, “We’re able to come together and just have an awesome relationship.” This sense of togetherness extends beyond just the two of them, as it also includes developing a close bond with Maggie’s parents, Pat and Lesly.

Reflecting on his experience meeting Maggie’s father, the iconic Wheel of Fortune host, he shared, “He’s a great guy.” He admitted that it’s natural to feel nervous when meeting a partner’s parents, adding, “Everybody’s nervous to meet the father of the person they’re dating, or mother, or both.”

Despite the initial anxiety, he found comfort in being himself, describing the freedom in being his authentic, “weird” self around Maggie’s dad. This openness has evidently played a key role in fostering a strong relationship with her family.

Plus, he noted there is a freedom to having been his authentic, “weird” self with Maggie’s dad.

Jonathan Rinderknecht’s Legal Battle: Attorney Steve Haney Takes Center Stage Amidst Ongoing LA Controversy

0

The man accused of sparking the catastrophic Palisades Fire has been unfairly targeted from the start, according to his renowned defense attorney, who spoke with The California Post.

Steve Haney, a Miami-based lawyer famous for his dynamic approach, asserted that his client, 29-year-old Jonathan Rinderknecht, has been the victim of “character assassination” since his arrest in relation to the tragic fire.

“There’s been an assumption of his guilt from the very beginning,” Haney remarked. “The pretrial coverage has been overwhelmingly negative.”

Haney argues that the prosecution has not successfully demonstrated that Rinderknecht was responsible for igniting the blaze on January 1, 2025.

“There is no concrete evidence linking him to the fire. The case is based entirely on circumstantial evidence,” he stated.

For more than a week, Haney and Rinderknecht have watched prosecutors build their case largely around the defendant’s state of mind before the fire. Jurors have been shown conversations Rinderknecht had with ChatGPT, which he allegedly used as a journal to vent about climate change and the wealthy.

The government has also highlighted angry text messages sent to a girlfriend who declined to spend New Year’s Eve with him and a French music video he repeatedly played around the time of the fire, which prosecutors argue references burning objects.

“It’s a song about smoking a joint and drinking tea, not arson,” Haney has argued in court.

Prosecutors acknowledged in opening statements that they have no footage showing Rinderknecht igniting a fire shortly after midnight, relying instead on cellphone records and grainy surveillance video placing him near where the initial 9-acre blaze began.

Fire experts have testified that the catastrophic Jan. 7 Palisades Fire was a rekindling of the Jan. 1 fire, which smoldered underground for days before powerful Santa Ana winds fanned it into the inferno that devastated Pacific Palisades and parts of Malibu.

“Rinderknecht wasn’t anywhere near the Palisades on January 7,” Haney has repeatedly noted.

Before Rinderknecht’s arrest, much of the public blame was directed at Mayor Karen Bass, who was in Ghana on a trip led by then-President Joe Biden when the fire erupted.

Critics also blasted Bass over empty reservoirs in Pacific Palisades during the crisis, fueling anti-Bass activism and even helping spark former reality star Spencer Pratt’s mayoral campaign.

When asked by The Post whether his client had become a scapegoat for Bass and the city, Haney declined to go there.

“I’m not allowed to get into that,” he said. “The judge made it very clear that we’re not to address those issues of negligence. We’ll stay focused on the lack of evidence that Jonathan started the fire on January 1.”

Rinderknecht’s father, Joel, has attended court daily and remains adamant his son is innocent. Haney expects to begin presenting the defense case Thursday, hoping to persuade the all-Los Angeles jury that Rinderknecht is not the villain prosecutors have portrayed.

“People may have made up their minds already,” Haney said. “Hopefully the jury will keep an open mind and follow the evidence.”

Anna Faris Unveils Reasons Behind Surprising Departure from ‘Mom’ After Seven Successful Seasons

Anna Faris recently opened up about her experience on the popular sitcom “Mom,” reflecting on her departure after seven successful seasons. During an appearance on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, Faris shared her thoughts on her role as Christy Plunkett in the Chuck Lorre-created series, expressing both fondness and the challenges she faced.

Faris spoke warmly about her co-stars, praising her “brilliant cast” and the experience of working on the show. However, she also acknowledged that the demanding schedule eventually took its toll. “I loved my time on ‘Mom,’ but towards the end, the intensity became overwhelming,” she told host Josh Horowitz, likening her tenure from 2013 to 2020 to a marathon that tested her endurance.

Reflecting on her career, Faris, now 49, admitted, “I never had a job that lasted more than three months before, aside from waitressing.” This long-term commitment was a new challenge for her, one that ultimately contributed to her decision to leave the show.

When questioned about whether the rigorous filming schedule was a factor in her departure, Faris described it as “a complicated time,” hinting at a mix of personal and professional reasons behind her choice to step away from the beloved series.

When asked if the “intensity” of the filming schedule is what led her to depart the longstanding series, she responded, “It was a complicated time.”

The “House Bunny” star claimed she would have to work out the details about exactly why she left the show in another podcast episode.

“I’m always hesitant to really chew into my experience on ‘Mom’ because seven years is a huge chunk of time,” Faris said. “And being a part of an intense, amazing project.”

Elsewhere in the podcast, the “Just Friends” star revealed why she agreed to sign on to the series alongside Allison Janney as Bonnie Plunkett.

“It was a really funny pilot, a really interesting pilot,” she said, explaining that as she got older, she felt the need to “settle down.”

“I didn’t think that the movie landscape looked wide open at all,” Faris said. “An avenue to longevity in Hollywood could be comedy.”

“But doing the show ‘Mom,’ I loved the live audience,” she added, referring to them as the “happiest live audience you can imagine.”

Until this day, the “Scary Movie” star has “Mom” fans approach her.

“I feel really moved that I’ve touched lives,” she continued.

“Mom” followed Faris and Janney, who portray a mother and daughter.

Janney was the official lead for Season 8, however, the sitcom wasn’t renewed for another season.

The “Juno” star previously shared her dissatisfaction with the show’s cancellation, saying on a previous episode of the “Late Late Show,” I wish that we’d had at least another year for the writers to have that much time to ramp up to the ending. We sort of found out sooner than we thought we would.”

Trump Woos French President Macron with Lavish Versailles Dinner: A Diplomatic Charm Offensive

0

On Wednesday evening, President Donald Trump rolled out the charm offensive as he made his entrance at the opulent Palace of Versailles. The occasion was a grand dinner hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife, Brigitte, who welcomed Trump with their signature extended handshake, lasting about ten seconds, followed by the customary double kiss on the cheeks.

During this warm exchange, Trump offered high praises to his French hosts, expressing his admiration for the presidential couple. “This is so beautiful. We thank the President, and Brigitte is an amazing woman,” he enthused, clearly impressed by the evening’s splendor and hospitality.

While primarily present for a bilateral dinner with the Macrons, the event also served as a backdrop for significant diplomatic activity. The White House announced that President Trump had taken the opportunity to sign a memorandum of understanding with Iran, underscoring the prominence of the Iran issue during this week’s G7 discussions.

Trump’s visit to Versailles was part of a broader itinerary that saw him engaging with global leaders since Monday in the scenic Évian-les-Bains, a French locale that borders the serene waters of Lake Geneva. The gathering aimed to address pressing international matters, with the Iran situation featuring prominently on the agenda.

He’s been huddling with other world leaders since Monday in Évian-les-Bains, the part of France that touches Lake Geneva.

It was long-rumored that Trump would visit Versailles on this trip to France.

But the President’s schedule didn’t officially change until Tuesday, as he made a pitstop to the palace, located about 10 miles outside of Paris, before flying back to the United States.

The President said he accepted the invitation from Macron, whom he’s criticized and even mocked, trying his best at a French accent, because ‘I’m a fan of beautiful places.’

‘Versailles is not a gold leaf. Versailles is a real deal,’ Trump said.

Macron explained away the dinner to critics by saying it was to celebrate America’s 250th birthday, as France played a pivotal role in the US’s independence.

Versailles was chosen because it was ‘a historic symbol of Franco-American friendship,’ an Élysée official told the Guardian.

It was also likely chosen because of the President’s well-known adoration for opulence.

Since arriving back at the White House in January 2025, one of Trump’s top projects has been the construction of a White House ballroom.

He’s also taken on many other White House construction projects, including painting parts of the Oval Office gold.

The President received a personalized tour of some of the rooms of Versailles before dining with the Macrons in the Lower Gallery.

In true European style, the dinner didn’t kick off until 10:53 PM local time.

The menu consisted of white asparagus with lobster and caviar, chicken roasted with truffles and slices of potatoes roasted with some Comte cheese – gratin Dauphinois – and for dessert, hot chocolate pie with vanilla ice cream, the White House said.

Onlookers to the pairs meeting were fascinated to see how the two leaders would greet one another.

The duo have shaken hands uncomfortably a number of times over the years with their ‘death clasp’ handshakes having gone viral.

Footage from 2017 shows the two leaders locking hands for 29 seconds straight.

Last year, the pair met outside the White House and saw them gripping onto one other for an excruciating 12 seconds as they posed for photos.

In October 2025, an embrace between the two leaders  soon turned into something akin to an arm wrestle as the two presidents exchanged what seemed like intense conversation while swinging their opposite number’s hand from side to side.

During a May 2017 meeting ahead of the NATO summit in Brussels, Trump and Macron gripped hands so tightly that their knuckles turned white and their jaws clenched.

Macron said at the time that the clinch of a handshake was ‘not innocent’ and meant to be a ‘moment of truth’ showing his US counterpart that the French leader would not be intimidated.

They shared several more bizarre handshakes during Trump’s first term, which ended in January 2021.

In December 2024, after Trump returned to the White House, the pair were reunited in Paris for the reopening of the Notre Dame, which had been severely damaged in a April 2019 fire.

Trump and Macron were back at it with the intense handshakes during the trip.

Earlier this week at the G7, Macron got caught on a hot mic appearing to discuss Trump with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who’s had a rocky relationship with the American leader.

Zelensky appeared to tell Macron that he would be meeting with Trump at the international summit.

The leaders spoke quietly for over twenty seconds before Macron rejoined more audibly, ‘OK, we’ll arrange that.’

Zelensky did get his Trump meeting, with Macron being the one who orchestrated the gathering on the sidelines of the G7.

Reporters were kept away, however, after Trump and Zelensky’s 2025 meeting in the Oval Office turned into a shouting match.
