Weber City Weighs New Mobile Home Ordinance: What Residents Need to Know

WEBER CITY, Va. (WJHL) — During a public hearing on Tuesday, the Weber City Town Council engaged with residents regarding a proposed regulation on mobile homes.

The new rule aims to ban single-wide manufactured homes within the town’s jurisdiction.

Kim Kardashian Spotted with Plastered Fingers After Dining Out

Kim Kardashian made headlines after being spotted with her fingers bandaged as she left the upscale Le Voltaire restaurant in Paris on Sunday night.

The 43-year-old entrepreneur and media personality donned an oversized black faux fur coat, visibly displaying her fingers wrapped in plaster. While the specifics of her mishap remain undisclosed, she appeared unfazed by the situation.

Upon her arrival at the restaurant, Kardashian had kept her hands concealed, leaving it unclear whether the injury occurred before or during her visit.

Earlier in the day, the reality TV icon attended the Balenciaga fashion show. Despite her injury, she graciously paused to sign autographs for fans gathered outside the popular dining spot.

The reality star, who attended the Balenciaga catwalk earlier in the day, kindly signed autographs for fans as she approached the eatery.

Kim appeared to make a major fashion blunder as she led the arrivals to the star-studded Balenciaga show during Paris Fashion Week on Sunday morning.

The mother-of-four flaunted her hourglass physique in a figure-hugging black lace dress as she posed up a storm for the cameras.

However, many eagle-eyed fans couldn’t help but notice the large price tag was still attached the dress.

As Kim headed to watch the runway show, the tag swung behind her freely, but was then seemingly absent when she made it inside the venue to sit on the front row.

However, she often opts for fashion forward looks and unconventional outfits, meaning the tag was likely to have been an intentional accessory and talking point.

It comes after earlier this year Kim was blasted by fans after revealing she has become an ambassador for Balenciaga, one year after the brand faced controversy for an advert featuring children and BDSM items.

She announced her partnership with the label, helmed by creative director Demna Gvasalia, in January.

She previously refused to cut ties with the fashion house but said she was ‘shaken and disgusted’ by the images which sparked a backlash against the brand.

Since then, she has made her loyalty clear by participating in an ad for Balenciaga’s upcoming Summer 2024 collection.

After announcing her new partnership many fans were left disappointed by the decision and hit back at her statement, in which she wrote that her relationship with the brand was built on a ‘commitment to doing what’s right.’

‘Of all the brands, she had to choose the one with child abuse allegations. Not even surprised though…’ one person wrote, while another branded her a ‘hypocrite’ adding, ‘Money is all that matters to her.’

Another person accused Kim of throwing her ‘morals out of the window’ for money, while someone else added, ‘Anything for money and a higher net worth I guess.’

Others called the SKIMS founder out for hypocritical behaviour: ‘So basically she said f**k Balenciaga when they were getting backlash but now that its safe for her brand she’s back??’

Many others hit out against the brand, calling it ‘trash’ and ‘canceled.’

Kim’s full statement about becoming an ambassador for the brand read: ‘For several years now, Balenciaga’s designs have been a part of my many looks – and some of my most iconic fashion moments.’

‘This historic fashion house embraces modernity, craftsmanship and takes an innovative approach to design under Demna.’

‘For me, this long-standing relationship is built on mutual trust and a commitment to doing what’s right. I’m excited about this next chapter for the brand and to become their ambassador.’

Kim has starred in Balenciaga campaigns, walked in their show and accompanied Demna to the 2021 Met Gala.

After Balenciaga’s ill-judged campaign, Kim shared a statement to her Instagram where she wrote: ‘I have been quiet for the past few days, not because I haven’t been shocked and outraged by the recent Balenciaga campaigns, but because I wanted an opportunity to speak to their team to understand for myself how this could have happened.

‘As a mother of four, I have been shaken by those disturbing images. The safety of children must be held with the highest regard and anything against it should have no place in our society – period.’

She subsequently reissued the statement that saw some of the wording changed using stronger language adding: ‘any attempts to normalize child abuse of any kind should have no place in our society – period.’

Chaos in Court: Iryna Zarutska’s Accused Killer Disrupts Proceedings After Being Deemed Unfit for Trial

0

A North Carolina courtroom witnessed a dramatic scene on Tuesday when Decarlos Brown Jr., the man accused of fatally stabbing a young Ukrainian refugee on a commuter train, erupted during a court session. His outburst occurred just as a federal judge declared him mentally unfit to stand trial.

During the hearing in Charlotte, the 35-year-old defendant persistently interrupted the proceedings. He demanded to know if the judge had reviewed his mental health evaluation and voiced his intentions to file charges against the FBI.

As court officers moved to remove him from the courtroom, Brown continued to shout, making cryptic references to having ‘material in his body’ and questioning whether the judge had received correspondence from his mother.

This courtroom disruption unfolded as the judge ruled on Brown’s mental incompetence, a decision stemming from the killing of 23-year-old Iryna Zarutska. Zarutska, a Ukrainian refugee, was tragically killed last year, a crime that sent shockwaves through the Charlotte community.

Brown faces federal charges for causing death on a mass transportation system, a serious offense that carries the possibility of the death penalty.

He also faces a separate state charge of first-degree murder, although that case has been paused while federal proceedings move forward.

US District Judge Kenneth D. Bell ordered Brown committed to a federal medical facility for treatment after mental health experts concluded he is presently unable to understand the legal proceedings against him or properly assist in his own defense.

According to court filings, Brown has repeatedly claimed he is suffering from what he calls a ‘body emergency’ and believes someone has gained control of his body through technology that authorities refuse to investigate.

Defense attorneys told the court that Brown wanted the judge to hear a statement alleging that ‘someone has full access to my body and they are controlling me wrongfully’ and that he had been wrongly diagnosed with schizophrenia.

A forensic mental health evaluation conducted by federal examiners concluded that Brown ‘is presently not competent to stand trial,’ according to the judge’s order.

However, experts also determined that his condition could potentially improve with treatment.

The court found Brown’s prognosis for restoration of competency was favorable if he receives appropriate medication and medical care.

As a result, Bell ordered Brown transferred into the custody of the US attorney general for hospitalization and treatment for up to four months while doctors attempt to restore his competency.

After that period, the court will reassess whether Brown is capable of standing trial, whether additional treatment is necessary, or whether competency cannot be restored.

Outside the courthouse, US Attorney Russ Ferguson said the ruling was an important step in the legal process.

‘The court found that his prognosis is ‘good’ to be made competent and set a four-month deadline to have that process go forward,’ Ferguson told reporters.

How should the justice system handle violent offenders found mentally unfit for trial?

‘The court ordered that he seek treatment and medication,’ Ferguson added, noting that Brown will remain in federal custody while undergoing treatment.

Ferguson said prosecutors remain focused on obtaining justice for Zarutska and her family.

‘Our number one goal here is justice for Iryna Zarutska and Iryna Zarutska’s family,’ he said. ‘That’s what’s on the top of our minds and our hearts every day, and this is a step in that process.’

Asked about Brown’s courtroom behavior, Ferguson said it was difficult to determine exactly what the defendant was attempting to communicate.

‘It wasn’t entirely clear what he was yelling out,’ Ferguson said. ‘We’ve seen since the beginning of this case, he says there’s some sort of material that controls him and I think it was related to that. And that plays a little bit of a role in why he was found not competent to stand trial.’

Authorities say Zarutska was riding the train, returning home from her job at a pizza restaurant, when a crazed attacker snuck up on her from behind and stabbed her to death on August 22, 2025.

Footage of the attack on Zarutska showed the refugee sitting by herself looking down at her phone as Brown boarded the train and sat behind her.

Moments later, Brown appeared to unfurl a switchblade before standing up and looming over the refugee.

The refugee who fled her war-torn home in 2022 bled to death with fear in her eyes as onlookers did nothing to intervene.

Prosecutors identified the cold-blooded culprit as Brown Jr. who blamed his violent actions on a schizophrenic episode.

Zarutska, who had escaped war-torn Ukraine after Russia’s invasion and resettled in the United States, died from her injuries shortly afterward.

Brown was arrested soon after the attack and has remained in custody ever since.

He was previously found incompetent to stand trial in the parallel state murder case, while a separate evaluation conducted by the Department of Justice’s Bureau of Prisons also concluded that he was not competent to face the federal charges.

Questions over Brown’s mental state come after the Daily Mail exclusively revealed Brown’s first-ever jailhouse calls after allegedly murdering Zarutska, in which he spoke of ‘materials in my brain’ which he claimed forced him to stab her.

Zarutska's killing drew widespread attention because the young refugee had escaped the conflict in Ukraine only to be fatally attacked while commuting home in North Carolina

Brown had dozens of prior arrests before Zarutska’s murder and had been freed by North Carolina Magistrate Judge Teresa Stokes just seven months before he allegedly stabbed the refugee.

The killing sparked calls for tougher sentencing for repeat offenders after it emerged that Brown, whose prior arrests included armed robbery and assault, was freed on a ‘written promise’ that he would return for his next court appearance.

In her obituary, Zarutska’s family said that before starting her new life in the US, Iryna graduated from Synergy College in Kyiv with a degree in Art and Restoration.

She was described as an adventurous young woman who adored animals and traveling.

‘She shared her creativity generously, gifting family and friends with her artwork,’ they said.

Albanese Expresses Concern Over Escalating US-Iran Tensions Following Mutual Strikes

0

In brief

  • US President Donald Trump has accused Iran of shooting down a US military helicopter.
  • Despite Iranian demands, Israel has continued its attacks on Lebanon.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has expressed deep concern over the potential human and economic consequences of escalating hostilities, as the United States intensifies its military actions against Iran.

The situation has escalated following U.S. President Donald Trump’s commitment on Wednesday to retaliate, accusing Iran of downing a U.S. military helicopter the night before.

According to Iranian media, the U.S. strikes triggered multiple explosions along Iran’s southern coastline near the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

In response to these strikes, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi issued a stern warning, hinting at possible countermeasures.

“Despite facing setbacks on the battlefield, the U.S. has chosen to test our resolve. Our formidable armed forces will not leave any attack or threat unanswered. Leave our region if you wish to remain secure,” Araghchi declared on social media platform X.

Hours later, Iranian forces fired “long-range missiles” and “targeted and destroyed four major targets” in Jordan, including F35 fighter nests at an air base and the US command centre in Al-Azraq, the country’s Revolutionary Guards said in a statement quoted by IRNA news agency on Wednesday.

The hostilities extended to other countries in the Middle East, with air raid sirens sounding in Bahrain after the Guards said they had struck another US base there.

Albanese told ABC News Breakfast he was once again calling for a de-escalation.

“We are very worried both about the human impact, of course, that comes with war, but also that the economic impact that is having a massive effect on the global economy will get worse rather than better.

“We want to see a de–escalation because of the impact, not just in the Middle East. We’re a long way away, but we are impacted here each and every day.”

Asked if the government would extend the fuel excise cut, introduced in April following the outbreak of war in the Middle East, Albanese said the government would “make the assessment”.

Albanese did not say whether he had been briefed by Trump before the US’ attack, but said the uncertainty was creating great difficulties.

“The advice that we follow, and on many occasions that has been declared, we have a caveat of course which is that it is uncertain,” he said.

“That is creating a great degree of difficulty as well when economic markets respond to these news statements that are made in the United States and other places as well”.

After the downing of the Apache attack helicopter, Trump said he had been informed “that last night the Iranians shot down one of our highly sophisticated Apache Helicopters while patrolling over the Strait of Hormuz”.

While the crew members were uninjured, “the United States must, of necessity, respond to this attack,” he said.

Earlier, he said negotiations to end the war in the Middle East were in their final stages.

Trump’s comments were followed by a statement on X by Araghchi.

“The Strait of Hormuz is NOT international waters but shared between Iran and Oman … Foreign forces in proximity to our territory are at constant risk on account of their own human errors, plain accidents, or potentially being caught in crossfire,” he said.

“To reduce risk, best solution is for them to leave. We prefer language of diplomacy but speak other languages too,” he added.

On Trump’s orders, US forces later carried out “proportional” strikes against Iran in response to the downing of the helicopter, the US military said.

American forces “began launching self-defense strikes against Iran, at 5.00pm ET (7.00am AEST) today at the Commander in Chief’s direction, in response to yesterday’s downing of a U.S. Army Apache helicopter,” US Central Command said in a post on X.

The Apache helicopter is the second crewed aircraft that Washington has confirmed was shot down by Iran during the war, following the loss of an F-15 fighter plane in April.

The downing and the prospect of a US response pose the latest threat to a shaky ceasefire in place since 8 April, as the US and Iran struggle to negotiate an end to the conflict.

The escalation comes a day after Iran and Israel halted attacks that threatened to reignite the regional war, which was sparked by US and Israeli strikes on Iran on 28 February.

Iran has insisted that a halt to the war must include a truce in Lebanon, which was drawn into the war when Hezbollah militants fired rockets at Israel on 2 March.

Israel responded with an extensive campaign of airstrikes and a ground invasion that has killed more than 3,600 people. Exchanges of fire with Iran-backed Hezbollah have not stopped despite an ongoing truce.

Oil prices fall

Iran fired missiles at Israel on Monday in response to strikes against Lebanon’s Hezbollah in the southern suburbs of Beirut, before Israel struck back despite Trump’s efforts to dissuade Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu from doing so.

The Israeli leader said of Iran that the “fire on that front is contained” hours after Iran said it had stopped its military action.

But both sides warned they could resume hostilities, even as Trump indicated diplomatic efforts were progressing.

Iran and Israel “were going back and forth and now they both agreed through me to stop and we’re in the final throes of what will be a very, very good deal”, Trump told reporters earlier on Tuesday.

When asked whether a deal would take days or weeks, he said it would take “two or three days”.

Following Trump’s comments, oil prices fell around 5 per cent to below US$90 ($128) a barrel.

The conflict has severely disrupted shipping via the Strait of Hormuz, through which about a fifth of global oil usually passes, while Washington has imposed a blockade on Iranian ports.

Lebanese city evacuates

Despite Iranian demands, Israel has kept up its attacks on Lebanon, where it is fighting Hezbollah.

On Tuesday, Lebanon’s health ministry said an Israeli airstrike on Tyre killed at least eight people, with the Israeli military warning the entire city to evacuate shortly after the strike.

Lebanon’s National News Agency reported a “heavy strike” on Tyre, and raids on more than a dozen other locations across the country’s south.

A correspondent from the Agence France-Presse (AFP) news agency saw residents of Tyre, including those from the Christian quarter, fleeing and heavy traffic heading north after the Israeli warning.

Magic Johnson Embraces the American Dream: Prioritizing Community Over Self

0

In collaboration with the Milken Center for Advancing the American Dream, The Post is highlighting stories from U.S. citizens about their visions of the American Dream as we approach 2026. Among these voices is Earvin “Magic” Johnson, the legendary basketball player and influential entrepreneur. A top draft pick for the Los Angeles Lakers in 1979, Johnson boasts an illustrious career with five NBA championships and 12 All-Star appearances. Beyond the court, he has become a successful businessman and a prominent advocate for HIV and AIDS awareness.

To me, the American Dream is about ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to enjoy its benefits.

I’m deeply aware of the challenges faced by those living in inner cities and urban areas across America who feel left behind, regardless of their race or background.

Growing up in poverty, I understood early on the power of education and hard work. Recognizing my talent in basketball, I dedicated myself to perfecting my skills, which opened doors to new opportunities.

My parents instilled in me the values that shaped who I am today. Like my father, I’m driven by a strong work ethic; he tirelessly worked two jobs to provide for our family of six sisters and three brothers. From my mother, I inherited a passion for helping others and making the world a better place.

I excelled at basketball, but also, I was smart enough to really be concerned with my education. And, last but not least, to meet people. I wasn’t afraid of going up to those who were really successful and asking them to be a mentor or to give me advice on achieving the American dream.

I rolled my sleeves up and I went to work. And I worked very, very hard. And that, to me, is what the American dream is all about. It is educating yourself to get a good job. And then, also, blessing not only your own family but other people.

Giving back is at the top of my list of things to do every single year: 125 kids on scholarship. [The Magic Johnson Foundation has] built 18 technology centers around the country. I built housing and hospitals in Africa through different organizations and also gave medicine to care for those who were living with HIV and AIDS. We’ve given over $10 million to different HIV and AIDS organizations throughout America.

That’s the American dream to me: helping others besides yourself.

Revitalize Your Core: 6 Standing Exercises to Sculpt Strong Abs After 50

0

Concerned about a weakening core after hitting 50? Try these six standing exercises that are more effective than machines for strengthening your abs.

Having strong abs beyond the age of 50 can significantly enhance your mobility, improve your posture, and provide better support throughout your daily activities. Your core engages when carrying groceries, stabilizes you while walking, aids in rotation when reaching across your body, and supports your lower back during lifting or bending. Therefore, incorporating standing ab exercises into your routine is a smart approach, as they require your core to engage while your body moves.

While gym machines can add resistance, standing exercises integrate your abs into natural movement patterns. These exercises involve bracing, carrying, rotating, resisting rotation, and managing your posture under load. These are essential skills that translate directly into everyday actions, whether it’s climbing stairs, loading a car, or maintaining balance with shifting weight.

In my approach to coaching core training, I emphasize exercises that make your abs feel functional rather than just fatigued. A well-designed standing core exercise should encourage controlled breathing, strong posture, and tension across your ribs, hips, and midsection. By incorporating dumbbells, kettlebells, or resistance bands, you can create an effective core workout without relying on machines.

When I coach core training, I like exercises that make the abs feel useful, not just tired. A good-standing core move should help you breathe with control, maintain a strong posture, and keep tension through your ribs, hips, and midsection. Add dumbbells, kettlebells, or bands, and you can build a solid core session without sitting down at a machine.

The six exercises below train your abs from several angles while keeping your feet on the floor. You’ll use carries, presses, chops, marches, and side bends to build stronger abs, obliques, hips, shoulders, and grip. Keep the movements smooth, use a load you can control, and make your midsection work from the first rep to the last.

Goblet Hold March

Goblet hold marches train your abs, hip flexors, glutes, and shoulders while your core keeps your torso tall. Holding a dumbbell or kettlebell at your chest gives your midsection an instant job because it has to brace as one knee lifts. This builds core strength in a standing position, which carries over well to walking, stairs, and stepping over objects. Move slowly enough to stay balanced and let your abs keep your ribs and hips stacked.

Muscles Trained: Abs, hip flexors, glutes, shoulders, core.

How to Do It:

  1. Stand tall with your feet hip-width apart.
  2. Hold a dumbbell or kettlebell at your chest.
  3. Brace your core and keep your shoulders relaxed.
  4. Lift one knee toward your waist.
  5. Lower your foot with control.
  6. Alternate sides in a steady rhythm.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 3 sets of 10 to 12 reps per leg. Rest for 45 seconds between each set.

Best Variations: Bodyweight marches, suitcase marches, overhead marches.

Form Tip: Stay tall and keep the weight close to your chest.

Band Pallof Press

The band Pallof press trains your abs and obliques to resist rotation. As you press the band away from your chest, the tension tries to pull your torso sideways, and your core has to keep your body square. That makes the Pallof press a strong standing ab exercise because it builds midsection strength while maintaining proper posture. This type of core control helps with carrying uneven loads, turning, reaching, and staying steady during daily movement.

Muscles Trained: Abs, obliques, shoulders, glutes.

How to Do It:

  1. Anchor a resistance band at chest height.
  2. Stand sideways to the anchor point with your feet shoulder-width apart.
  3. Hold the band at your chest with both hands.
  4. Brace your core and keep your torso facing forward.
  5. Press your hands straight out in front of you.
  6. Bring your hands back to your chest with control.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 3 sets of 10 to 12 reps per side. Rest for 30 to 45 seconds between each set.

Best Variations: Pallof press holds, split stance Pallof presses, overhead Pallof presses.

Form Tip: Keep your ribs down and resist the band pulling you sideways.

Suitcase Carry

Suitcase carries train your abs and obliques by loading one side of your body at a time. A dumbbell or kettlebell in one hand asks your core to keep your shoulders and hips level while you walk. That steady bracing makes carries one of the most practical ab exercises after 50. You’re strengthening your midsection while also training your grip, posture, shoulders, hips, and walking control.

Muscles Trained: Abs, obliques, grip, shoulders, glutes.

How to Do It:

  1. Hold a dumbbell or kettlebell in one hand.
  2. Stand tall with your shoulders level.
  3. Brace your core and keep your ribs down.
  4. Walk forward with controlled steps.
  5. Keep your posture tall through the full carry.
  6. Switch hands and repeat on the other side.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 3 carries of 30 to 45 seconds per side. Rest for 45 to 60 seconds between carries.

Best Variations: Lighter suitcase carries, heavier suitcase carries, suitcase marches.

Form Tip: Walk tall and keep your shoulders stacked over your hips.

Standing Band Woodchop

Standing band woodchops train your abs and obliques through rotation while your hips and shoulders move together. The band provides steady resistance to your core as you pull it across your body, and your midsection controls the path from start to finish. This exercise helps build rotational strength, which supports reaching, turning, lifting, and athletic movements such as golf and tennis. Keep the motion smooth and let your torso guide the band instead of swinging your arms.

Muscles Trained: Obliques, abs, shoulders, glutes.

How to Do It:

  1. Anchor a resistance band at shoulder height or slightly above.
  2. Stand sideways to the anchor point with your feet shoulder-width apart.
  3. Hold the band with both hands near one shoulder.
  4. Brace your core and pull the band diagonally across your body.
  5. Finish with your hands near the opposite hip.
  6. Return to the starting position with control and switch sides after your reps.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 3 sets of 8 to 12 reps per side. Rest for 45 seconds between each set.

Best Variations: Low-to-high woodchops, high-to-low woodchops, shorter-range woodchops.

Form Tip: Rotate through your hips and torso together.

Farmer Carry

Farmer carries train your abs, upper back, grip, shoulders, and glutes while your whole body works to stay tall under load. Holding weights in both hands gives your core a strong bracing challenge with every step. This exercise builds the type of ab strength you use when carrying bags, walking with a load, or maintaining strong posture throughout a long day. Use weights that feel challenging yet allow smooth, steady walking.

Muscles Trained: Abs, grip, shoulders, upper back, glutes.

How to Do It:

  1. Hold a dumbbell or kettlebell in each hand.
  2. Stand tall with your shoulders down and back.
  3. Brace your core before you start walking.
  4. Walk forward with steady steps.
  5. Keep your chest lifted and your posture strong.
  6. Set the weights down with control when the carry ends.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 3 carries of 30 to 45 seconds. Rest for 60 seconds between each carry.

Best Variations: Lighter farmer carries, heavier farmer carries, trap bar carries.

Form Tip: Keep your steps controlled and your posture tall.

Dumbbell Side Bend

Dumbbell side bends train your obliques while your abs help control the movement. The key is to move slowly and keep the range clean. Your side body lowers and lifts the weight while your torso stays aligned. This exercise works well when you use a controlled tempo, pause briefly at the bottom, and return to standing through your obliques.

Muscles Trained: Obliques, abs, grip.

How to Do It:

  1. Stand tall with your feet hip-width apart.
  2. Hold one dumbbell at your side.
  3. Brace your core and keep your shoulders level.
  4. Lower the dumbbell down your thigh with control.
  5. Use your obliques to return to standing tall.
  6. Complete all reps, then switch sides.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 3 sets of 10 to 12 reps per side. Rest for 45 seconds between each set.

Best Variations: Lighter side bends, slower side bends, suitcase holds.

Form Tip: Move straight side to side and keep your torso controlled.

How to Build Stronger Abs After 50

Standing ab exercises work best when you treat them like strength training. Brace before each rep, control the weight, and maintain strong posture from start to finish. These moves train your abs through marching, carrying, rotating, resisting rotation, and bending, which gives your core more ways to get stronger.

  • Start with posture: Stand tall, set your ribs over your hips, and brace lightly before each rep. A strong setup helps your abs do their job.
  • Use carries often: Suitcase carries and farmer carries build practical core strength while training your grip, shoulders, and upper back.
  • Control every rotation: Woodchops and Pallof presses work best when your abs guide the movement. Smooth reps keep tension in the right places.
  • Pick the right load: Use weights and bands that challenge you while still allowing clean movement. Good control makes each set more effective.
  • Train both sides evenly: Carries, side bends, woodchops, and Pallof presses give each side focused work. Balanced strength helps your core feel steadier.

Strong abs after 50 should help your whole body move better. Build your routine around standing core work, keep the reps clean, and let your midsection get stronger in the positions you use every day.

Rising Transit Violence in Atlanta, New York, and Charlotte Sparks Demand for Enhanced Monitoring of Repeat Offenders

0

This tragedy, alongside other violent incidents on public transit in three major U.S. cities, has heightened commuter fears and triggered public outcry over the justice system’s handling of repeat offenders.

Recent cases include a shooting on Atlanta’s MARTA, stabbings at New York City’s Penn Station, and another stabbing on Charlotte’s Lynx Blue Line.

Highlighted here are three recent public transit attacks involving alleged repeat offenders, which have intensified calls for stricter measures to safeguard commuters.

Among these incidents, Anthony Tyrone Gresham, aged 42, who has a history of multiple felony convictions, is accused of opening fire at Atlanta’s MARTA Midtown station. The shooting, which occurred on Friday, June 5, left a 17-year-old wounded before Gresham fled the scene.

Anthony Tyrone Gresham, 42, of Lithia Springs, was charged by criminal complaint on June 8 with committing an act of violence with intent to cause serious bodily injury on a mass transportation system, possession of ammunition by a convicted felon and discharging a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence. Federal prosecutors allege Gresham opened fire on a MARTA train at the Midtown Station on June 5, wounding a teenager before fleeing the scene. (Douglas County Sheriff’s Office)

Authorities say that Gresham allegedly walked up to the train car where the teen sat, pulled a handgun out of his bag and fired three times toward the victim.

The teenager was struck in his left hand and leg and medics took the teen to a nearby hospital.

Gresham, authorities said, ran from the station before law enforcement could apprehend him. The escape sparked a multi-agency manhunt that ended two days later when officers captured him in Douglasville.

Federal authorities charged Gresham with committing an act of violence with intent to cause serious bodily injury on a mass transportation system. He also faces federal charges for possession of ammunition by a convicted felon and discharging a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence.

The shooting came amid heightened scrutiny of MARTA safety following a separate fatal stabbing on the transit system days earlier of 66-year-old Margaret Swan, a great-grandmother.

In that separate attack, John Elijah Matthews, 25, a homeless man from Decatur, Georgia, was charged in a federal criminal complaint with committing an act of violence using a dangerous weapon with intent to cause death on a mass transportation system, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Georgia.

He is also charged locally with felony murder, according to Fulton County records.

Hector Deleon, 51, was identified as the suspect in a stabbing and slashing spree inside Penn Station’s New Jersey Transit concourse in New York City on Sunday, June 7.

The random attack happened shortly after 7 p.m. on the NJ Transit concourse inside Penn Station and sent commuters scrambling. The stabbing spree in the busy Manhattan commuter hub left five people bloodied, with one seriously injured, officials said.

Deleon had at least seven prior arrests, including a 2022 case in which he was accused of slashing a man in the neck. He was later sentenced to two years’ probation with conditions including mental health treatment.

Victim Henry Obadiah criticized liberal soft-on-crime policies after being stabbed in Penn Station by a career criminal. In an interview with Fox & Friends, Obadiah recalled the stabbing which left him with a large slash on his cheek and lip.

“I’m heading toward the exit to 7th Avenue, and I’m walking, you know, toward the escalator, and I see these two guys kind of scuffling a little bit. I didn’t think anything of it,” Obadiah said.

“Walking toward the escalator, and I locked eyes with this crazy madman, and he just looked at me, and he had this rage in his eyes, and he went whack. Cracked me right in the mouth. And my first reaction was, ‘I’m gonna go after this guy. I want to kill him.’ But then this guy behind me goes, ‘he’s got a knife. he’s got a knife.’”

Decarlos Brown Jr., 35, is accused of fatally stabbing Iryna Zarutska, a 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee, aboard Charlotte’s Lynx Blue Line on Aug. 22, 2025.

Federal prosecutors said Zarutska sat in front of Brown before he allegedly pulled out a knife and stabbed her from behind. Brown has been charged federally with violence against a mass transportation system resulting in death, a charge that could carry life in prison or the death penalty if he is convicted.

Brown had a history of violent crime, including assaults and robberies, and had also been diagnosed with schizophrenia. Yet he was still free and walking the streets.

On Tuesday, the repeat offender was deemed incompetent to stand trial in his federal case following a mental evaluation. This followed a previous May hearing for his state charges where the judge had ruled Brown incompetent to stand trial.

Brown is expected to be committed to a special facility under the direction of the U.S. attorney general for treatment aimed at restoring competency. If he is later found competent, the federal case could resume.

“Let me be clear, he will be in custody that whole time. Mr. Brown is in federal custody now and will remain in federal custody until trial,” Russ Ferguson, U.S. Attorney for the Western District of North Carolina, said following the hearing. “For us, our number one goal here is justice for Iryna Zarutska and Iryna Zarutska’s family. That’s what’s on the top of our minds and our hearts every day.”

Brown could face the death penalty if the federal case proceeds. However, a defendant who is found incompetent cannot be tried or executed while incompetent.

Shocking Allegation: Mother Accused of Plotting to Harm Children Under Pretense of Sleepover

An Oregon woman is facing attempted murder charges following allegations that she attempted to poison her young children, according to reports.

Chardonnay Marie Benavidez, aged 32, made a distressing 911 call on Saturday evening from her residence in Keizer, claiming that she and her children were experiencing intermittent unconsciousness. The call was made around 8:20 p.m.

Upon arrival, law enforcement officers discovered Benavidez along with her 2-year-old twins and a 4-year-old child in the living room. In addition, they found a concerning setup in the attached garage: a vehicle with a hose connected from its exhaust pipe into the vehicle’s interior.

Benavidez allegedly confessed to the dispatchers that she had attempted to end their lives, including her own, through carbon monoxide poisoning. All were subsequently taken to the Salem Hospital Emergency Department for treatment and were medically cleared by the following day.

After her release from medical care, Benavidez underwent evaluation by psychiatric professionals and was held by a physician. She was later transferred to the Marion County Correctional Facility, where she now faces three counts of first-degree attempted murder.

The three children were released to their father, Antonio Benavidez. They were divorced in 2024, and he said he was shocked when he got the call.

“She was such a great f—— mother,” he said in an exclusive interview with Nexstar’s KOIN. “I went to the hospital. They wouldn’t let me in. They wouldn’t give me no information. I ended up getting detained because I was like, ‘Dude, those are my kids back there, I’m f-cking going in.’”

Antonio said he only knew his ex had tried to harm herself in the beginning and was surprised to learn the kids were involved. He said she had made comments indicating she may have been struggling, but never said anything about the kids.

“She said it a few times, but I mean, you know, we all do,” he said.

After the children were released, Antonio said he went back to the house to get them clothes. But when he arrived, he noticed their belongings were all gone.

“The house is stripped,” he said. “She donated everything.”

Now, he said he’s just trying to keep everything normal for the kids.

“They don’t really know what’s going on, which is good,” he said.

During her first court appearance on Monday, prosecutors said Benavidez told the kids they would have a sleepover in the car, including popcorn.

She later reportedly told law enforcement that she had been planning it for a week and considered multiple options. A gun was also found inside the vehicle.
