Fresh insights have emerged in the high-profile case of Mackenzie Shirilla, an Ohio woman whose story has gained renewed attention following its feature in Netflix’s “The Crash.” Dubbed “hell on wheels,” Shirilla’s tale is being revisited through newly released jail calls and text messages.

Currently 21 years old, Shirilla is serving two concurrent sentences of 15 years to life for the deaths of Dominic Russo, 20, and Davion Flanagan, 19. Prosecutors contended that on July 31, 2022, she deliberately crashed her Toyota Camry into a brick building in Strongsville, Ohio. The prosecution’s argument painted the crash as an intentional act to end a tumultuous relationship with Russo, with Flanagan tragically caught in the crossfire.

These newly disclosed records, made public by the Strongsville Police Department and reported by Fox 8, coincide with Shirilla’s recent appeal to the Ohio Supreme Court for a case review.

What has happened since ‘The Crash’?

Since the documentary was released on May 15, police have released text messages between Shirilla and her boyfriend, Russo, as well as jailhouse calls and bodycam footage from the day of the crash, according to Fox 8.

The texts, reviewed by the local outlet, reveal that Shirilla complained to Russo about blackouts years before the crash and again just weeks before it, including a July 2, 2022, message in which she described what she called her “worst black out.”

Shirilla’s attorneys have argued that medical evidence could support her claim that she blacked out before the July 31, 2022, crash that killed Russo and Flanagan.

But other messages painted a darker picture of the couple’s relationship. Shirilla reportedly messaged, “THIS IS WHY I J WANNA F—ING KMS [kill myself]” and “I’m gonna kill someone.”

In another message, according to Fox 8, she told Russo to “treat the girl who would die for you a little better.”

In March 2022, Russo allegedly texted that Shirilla “hit me” and “tried to throw a rock at me.”

Along with the new text messages, her father, Steve Shirilla, has been placed on administrative leave from his job at a Catholic school for participating in the documentary, according to WOIO-TV.

According to the outlet, the school, Mary Queen of Peace School, sent a letter to families said that is investigating claims that a teacher at the school “has demonstrated poor judgment.”

Fox News Digital has reached out to the Mary Queen of Peace School for comment.

The messages have resurfaced as Shirilla’s lawyers asked the Ohio Supreme Court to review whether her postconviction claims should be heard after a lower court ruled her petition was filed one day too late.

In a filing with the Ohio Supreme Court reviewed by Fox News Digital, Shirilla’s attorneys argue her trial lawyers failed to adequately investigate evidence that she suffered from Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome, or POTS. The syndrome they say could have caused her to lose consciousness before the crash.

The defense says the condition was only “cursorily referenced” at trial, despite Shirilla and her family allegedly putting her attorneys on notice about it. Her lawyers now argue trial counsel should have dug deeper and sought expert testimony to explain whether POTS could account for Shirilla’s failure to brake before impact.

Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Michael O’Malley “believes without question that Mackenzie Shirilla is guilty of murder,” his office said in a May 27 statement.

“We are confident that any court that reviews this case will come to the same conclusion.”

Before delivering her verdict in 2023, Cuyahoga County Judge Nancy Margaret Russo said Shirilla was on a “mission.”

“This was not reckless driving. This was murder,” the judge said at the time as Shirilla wept in court. “She had a mission, and she executed it with precision. The mission was death.”

Liverpool Football Club has parted ways with manager Arne Slot just a year after he led the team to a Premier League title victory.

The club’s decision was made with some reluctance, acknowledging a disappointing title defense season and the pressing need for a fresh start.

This season, Slot faced significant challenges, losing 20 matches and finishing in fifth place. The campaign was marred by discontent among fans and outspoken criticism from key players, including Mohamed Salah, who has since left the club.

In a pointed social media post, Salah nostalgically referenced the high-energy attacking style of former manager Jürgen Klopp, which many interpreted as a veiled critique of Slot’s tactics.

As Liverpool begins its search for a new manager, the club expressed gratitude for Slot’s contributions, saying, “He departs with a Premier League title to his name and our deepest gratitude and appreciation.”

Andoni Iraola is the front-runner to take over. The former Bournemouth boss was brought to the Premier League by Richard Hughes, who has since moved to Liverpool as sporting director. Iraola, 43, has held talks with a number of clubs around the continent.

Iraola is holding out for the job but the Reds have also considered Stuttgart’s Sebastian Hoeness and Pierre Sage of Lens. Both have made their teams punch considerably above their weight.  

Liverpool only just qualified for the Champions League after a record-breaking £415million transfer spend in the summer. 

That was despite breaking the British transfer record twice, first for Florian Wirtz in a £116.5million deal and then for Alexander Isak at a £125m.  

But Isak spent large swathes of the season injured and Wirtz struggled to settle despite his sparkling reputation arriving from Bayer Leverkusen. 

Liverpool were also found lacking at the back, conceding 53 goals in the league, but Slot will point to the season-long injury of Giovanni Leoni on his debut as a mitigating factor. 

Slot also had to contend with the death of Diogo Jota last summer, which Liverpool’s squad have consistently pointed to as a traumatising experience.

Moreover, the departure of Trent Alexander-Arnold after a 20-year stint at the club since the age of six was something largely out of Slot’s hands and neither Jeremie Frimpong nor Milos Kerkez has been unable to replicate his creative influence from full-back.

Past Liverpool managers have been able to point to European glory after underwhelming domestic seasons but Slot’s record on the continent was middling. 

Liverpool reached the last 16 and the quarter-finals of the Champions League under him, losing to Paris Saint-Germain in consecutive seasons.

Mohamed Salah was unimpressed with Slot’s playing style and made his feelings public 

It was always going to be difficult to emulate Klopp, one of the totemic figures in Liverpool’s history and was able to electrify Anfield even when his side were perceived as the weaker team.

Klopp recognised the potential for nostalgia and, rather selflessly, chanted Slot’s name at Anfield in his final game in charge against Wolves two years ago in a bid to muster some mania for his successor. 

But ultimately, despite leading them to Premier League success, Slot was seen as a more technocratic, managerial figure than Klopp, who captured the spirit of the city, sang the terrace songs, and shared beers with supporters. Slot, meanwhile, faced boos this season. 

He tackled the challenges thrown his way graciously. Despite Salah being openly critical on his way out the door, Slot handed him a start in the final match of the season against Brentford – having dropped him earlier in the campaign. 

Asked how he will remember Salah, Slot said: ‘100 per cent last season, he said the most special thing I have won was last season’s Premier League title. 

‘Now I can safely say that was the most special thing I have won in my life so I will remember that and how important he was in that season for the club and as a result also for me with all the goals he scored.’

Many fans had seen Xabi Alonso as the dream successor but after his move to Chelsea, Iraola is seen as the frontrunner following his departure from Bournemouth. 

Iraola led Bournemouth into the Europa League and sets up his teams with an attractive style but has never managed a club of Liverpool’s ilk after stints at Larnaca, Mirandes, and Rayo Vallecano. 

Slot was unable to strike up the same relationship with the fans as Jurgen Klopp – but anyone would have struggled with that

Bournemouth only finished three points behind Liverpool and took the race for the Champions League down to the final day. 

Whoever succeeds Slot, they inherit a situation which is being talked about as a transitional period. Andy Robertson joins Salah in heading for the exit, with the left-back on his way to Tottenham on a free transfer.

They will also pick up a situation with a lot of promise. Liverpool are still able to compete for the best players in the transfer market and Slot also bequeaths a remarkable teenage talent in Rio Ngumoha, who he has nurtured well, to his successor. 

It feels as if Liverpool are back at square one after a rollercoaster couple of years.  

HONOLULU (AP) — In the secluded and diverse region of Puna on Hawaii’s Big Island, the tragic deaths of three men known for their off-grid, free-spirited ways have served as a shocking reflection of the community’s hidden challenges.

Within a day of Jacob Baker’s arrest, the local community was grappling to comprehend the events and sought clarity on why the authorities focused on the 36-year-old as the primary suspect in the murders of men in their late 60s and 70s.

Baker remains incarcerated, facing allegations of murder, burglary, and additional offenses.

He is accused of involvement in the deaths of three individuals: a 69-year-old found partially submerged in a cement pond, a 79-year-old discovered just a short distance away, and another 69-year-old whose remains were located approximately 19 miles (31 kilometers) from the others. By Friday, formal charges had yet to be filed by prosecutors.

The first victim was identified by police as Robert Shine, and the third victim as John Carse. The identity of the 79-year-old man is still pending official confirmation, though friends have named him as Chitta Morse.

Hawaii Police Chief Reed Mahuna said investigators had not found any connections among the victims, other than two of them lived near each other.

Fixtures at drum circles

Friends of Shine and Morse say the men moved to Puna for its off-grid, tropical and communal lifestyle.

Shine enjoyed dancing and swaying to the beat at drum circles, usually on Sunday afternoons, said Donald Hyatt, a drummer.

Hyatt last saw Shine at a party last month. A local rock-and-roll band was playing and Shine was dancing around.

“He was dancing like he loved life,” Hyatt recalled. “Bob had a permanent smile. Always in good spirits.”

Morse moved from Van Nuys, California 40 years ago “to live off-grid and to live in a warm tropical place, and to eat fruit,” said friend Jezuz Cinderland. “For 40 years he only ate raw food. Since he got to the island he just went completely raw and this was just the right environment for him to do it.”

On land rich with volcanic soil on Papaya Farms Road, Morse had what Cinderland called a “fruit forest,” growing things like coconut, avocado and durian.

“He would just share all the fruit he had,” Cinderland said. “The most fabulous abundance that you can imagine.”

While Morse had previously been a member of the raw-food commune Cinderland moved to Puna to join, in recent years Morse was a loner, Cinderland said.

Shine was a member of Cinderland’s commune, which has been shuttered by the county for various code violations, Cinderland said.

Work-trade life

Janelle Honer, who also grew fruit on Papaya Farms Road, seems to be what connected Baker to the men, who often attended pot luck dinners and parties on Honer’s property.

Baker had been living on Honer’s property in exchange for climbing and trimming coconut trees, her ex-husband, Stephen Shaffer said. Trading work for living accommodations is common in Puna.

Hyatt said Baker left the cabin he was living in on Honer’s property months ago but returned recently claiming “squatter’s rights” and threatened Honer. Hyatt said he urged her to seek a restraining order.

The slayings happened just days after two women requested temporary restraining orders against Baker, saying he had threatened and harassed them at a farm. One woman was staying there and the other co-owned it. A judge denied both applications, saying there was not enough proof of harassment.

No attorney was listed for Baker, who had 20 other cases in the court record in the past two decades, many of them traffic infractions. In most of those cases, Baker represented himself.

Honer, who Shaffer said was traveling out of the country, couldn’t be reached for comment.

A memorial for the men was planned for Saturday next to Honer’s place.

Puna is one of the few places in Hawaii where there’s affordable land, and the area’s infrastructure hasn’t kept up with its growth, said Ashley Kierkiewicz, who represents Puna on the county council.

While Puna has a reputation as a quirky frontier, it’s also a place rich in culture where people are resilient and lean on each other, she said.

Puna, with its landscape that’s a mix of lush jungle and barren lava-rock fields, also struggles with drugs, poverty and limited resources, said longtime resident Tiffany Edwards Hunt.

“People have this mistaken impression that they can come to Hawaii and heal,” she said. “Hawaii can either really be kind to you or it can chew you up and spit you out.”

Surveillance cameras aid capture

Mark Wyatt and Richard Valdez played a key role in Baker’s capture, calling the police when their surveillance camera system pinged Valdez’s phone and it showed Baker on their property on Thursday. Their property is about a half-mile from Carse’s home, but they didn’t know him well.

The videos show Baker, shirtless and barefoot, with a dog walking near a road and getting down on the ground as cars went by, in an apparent attempt to avoid being seen.

“He was ducking from the traffic, so it was pretty obvious” that he was trying to avoid being found, Valdez said.

Authorities arrested Baker a short distance away after finding him in a small cave, police said.

Wyatt said he believed Baker had been hiding near his property in a small, makeshift camping spot over a bluff overlooking the ocean. He said Baker stole couch cushions from a container outside his home and some charcoal, and Baker used coconut tree palm fronds to cover the site.

Valdez said he hadn’t seen Baker in about two years. Back then, he said, Baker was living next door to them, renting space from their neighbor while trimming coconuts from trees and selling them just off the area’s main road. He lived next door for about six months, Valdez said.

“He told me he was from Maui and that he had just had a newborn baby and his girlfriend had left and that he was trying to get his life together,” Valdez said. “So he seemed pretty normal and conscientious, so it’s hard to fathom that this happened.”

Attention, American husbands: Adam Sandler is not the fashion icon you should aspire to emulate.

Earlier this week, at the premiere of his wife’s movie, Sandler graced the red carpet in an ensemble more suited for a day of remote work than a Hollywood event. His attire suggested he spent the day on video calls with his camera conveniently turned off.

Sporting an oversized Knicks hoodie paired with cobalt blue pants that were far from flattering and a pair of grubby sneakers, Sandler seemed to have mistaken the glamorous event for a visit to the local gym.

And Sandler isn’t the only celebrity guilty of such fashion faux pas. Justin Bieber has also turned heads, appearing in athletic shorts that nearly scrape the ground, jeans hanging precariously low, and sunglasses shaped like alien eyes, all while stepping out with his stunning wife, Hailey.

Sandler is not alone. Justin Bieber has shocked onlookers with athletic shorts reaching down to his ankles, jeans sagged down to mid-thigh and alien eye-shaped sunglasses while out with his unbelievably glamorous wife, Hailey.

But I’m here to say: Save us from the plague of the “Schlub Hub.” Men, you can do so much better.

For me, as someone who invests in his daily look for reasons beyond vanity, I don’t take issue with Schlub Hubs for their crappy wardrobes — I get it, tracksuits are comfortable.

Dressing down is a complete lack of courtesy. I mean, nothing could possibly be in any more contrast than Sandler in that outfit standing next to Jackie Sandler, who wore an all-black look to the “Office Romance” premiere — her cute black clutch included.

And I am not alone.

“This dude is such a poser/loser,” said one commenter on Reddit in response to Sandler’s ghastly look.

“If he was actually so ‘disinterested’ as he pretends to be you would never see him in any Paparazzi pics or movies.”

Replied another: “I feel like it’s one thing when he’s promoting or doing his own projects but for his wife’s work you think he could throw on some khakis and a golf shirt at least lol.”

I’m nearly 20 years younger than Sandler, and appear to have learned a far greater stylistic lesson during my 30s than the 59-year-old ever did.

Invest time and money into your wardrobe, and not only will you approach any situation with respect — but everyone will also recognize your efforts, and respect you for them.

Over the last two years, I’ve spent at least $10,000 — a sum that Sandler could easily afford — on a wardrobe of bespoke trousers made with vintage fabrics and mint-condition 1980s blazers.

It may seem like a lot of money — and it is — but I was edging ever closer to a pivotal new decade, and looking good is worth the investment.

Similar to drinking coffee, it became a meditative ritual each day to put my outfits together — and accessorizing it with antique gold rings on both hands.

Because yes, jewelry isn’t just for women. Just ask Mr. T.

There was no occasion beyond going to work, but doing so in a sophisticated manner gave me regular boosts of confidence.

In fact, since I started paying closer attention to my appearance, it’s impossible for me to go a day without multiple people sharing their compliments.

On a subway downtown just a few weeks ago, a woman stopped me on the train to share a compliment on my outfit.

“I love your rings,” the woman, who later introduced herself as Steph, said.

Then, after gearing her eyes elsewhere, she saw my polished loafers under a pair of wide-leg dress pants, she added “I actually love your whole vibe.”

Needless to say, not every guy pays such attention to detail, and she was happy to see one who did.

This led us to spending our subway ride, as perfect strangers, discussing what dressing well means to us.

Perhaps there’s a sense of confidence behind wearing whatever on a whenever basis.

But “style” in the form of low-slung athletic pants, shirts riddled with holes and filthy sneakers will actually make others ignore, or even avoid, you — attention for all the wrong reasons.

Of all places that should never happen, a red carpet is pretty darn high on that list.
