Cain Clark and Caleb Velasquez Identified as Suspects in Islamic Center of San Diego Shooting

0

The alleged perpetrators behind the attack at the Islamic Center of San Diego have been named as Cain Clark, 17, and Caleb Velasquez, 18. This information comes from a law enforcement source cited by the New York Post.

The two suspects were discovered lifeless inside a vehicle located a few blocks away from the mosque. Authorities determined that they had died from apparent self-inflicted gunshot wounds following the incident.

David Clark, the grandfather of Cain Clark, expressed his sorrow, telling the Post, “We’re very sorry for what happened. We know as much as you do. It’s a shock.”

Cain Clark was an active member of the wrestling team at Madison High School, as noted on the school’s social media platform. A representative from the San Diego Unified School District informed Fox News Digital that Clark had been enrolled in virtual education through iHigh Virtual Academy since 2021.

While a motive remains unclear, authorities said that the deadly shooting is being investigated as a hate crime after police say authorities uncovered evidence the suspects engaged in “hate rhetoric.”

One suspect’s mother had contacted authorities and reported her son missing roughly two hours before the deadly attack, San Diego Police Chief Scott Wahl said Monday.

The situation escalated as the mother “began to piece together bits and pieces of information” and relayed them to investigators throughout the morning, according to Wahl, including that some of her firearms and her vehicle were missing.

“With this information, she believed her son was suicidal,” Wahl said during an evening news conference.

The search for the teen took on more urgency as police learned that he was dressed in camouflage and was with an acquaintance — facts that were not consistent with someone about to die by suicide, the chief said.

Revitalize Knee Strength After 60 with These 5 Effective Chair Exercises

Is your knee strength dwindling past the age of 60? Try these chair exercises to boost support and stability.

As we age, particularly beyond 60, maintaining knee strength becomes crucial. Robust knees enhance balance, safeguard the hips, increase walking endurance, and make everyday activities feel more manageable and secure. Simple movements such as rising from a chair, ascending stairs, or getting into a car require coordinated muscle strength around the knee joint. When these muscles weaken, it places additional stress on the knees, making movement feel stiff, unstable, or shaky.

While resistance bands can activate leg muscles, they often don’t challenge the body as effectively as controlled chair exercises do. A sturdy chair offers support while enabling more potent contractions of the quads, hamstrings, glutes, and calves, avoiding awkward joint positions. This approach not only builds functional lower-body strength but also improves coordination and confidence during daily activities. Additionally, chair exercises can alleviate the fear of falling, encouraging more consistent and determined training efforts.

A study published in the Journal of Aging and Physical Activity demonstrated that seated and chair-supported lower-body strengthening exercises significantly improved mobility, balance, and functional leg strength in older adults. The success lay in controlled repetition and steady weight-bearing movements rather than just light elastic resistance. The following five exercises focus on the muscles that stabilize and protect the knees while minimizing joint stress. Regular practice can lead to stronger steps, smoother standing power, and enhanced lower-body control in daily life.

Research published in the Journal of Aging and Physical Activity found that seated and chair-assisted lower-body strengthening exercises improved mobility, balance, and functional leg strength in older adults. The key came from controlled repetition and consistent weight-bearing movement rather than light elastic resistance alone. The five exercises below target the muscles that stabilize and protect the knees while keeping joint stress manageable. Perform them consistently, and you will notice stronger steps, smoother standing power, and better lower-body control during daily life.

Sit-to-Stand Squats

Few exercises rebuild knee strength faster than the sit-to-stand squat. This movement directly trains the exact mechanics required for daily independence while strengthening the quadriceps, glutes, and stabilizing muscles surrounding the knees. Many adults over 60 rely too heavily on momentum or their hands when standing up, which gradually weakens the lower body even more. Sit-to-stand squats restore controlled power through the full standing motion while teaching the knees to track safely and efficiently. The chair provides a built-in depth target that improves confidence and consistency during every repetition. Over time, this exercise improves stair climbing, walking speed, and lower-body endurance without placing unnecessary strain on the joints.

How to Do It

  • Sit tall near the edge of a sturdy chair
  • Place your feet shoulder-width apart
  • Cross your arms over your chest if possible
  • Lean slightly forward
  • Press through your heels to stand
  • Fully straighten your hips at the top
  • Lower slowly back into the chair
  • Complete 10 to 15 repetitions.

Seated Knee Extensions

The quadriceps protect the knees during almost every lower-body movement, yet they weaken rapidly with age and inactivity. Seated knee extensions isolate those muscles safely while improving knee control and muscular endurance. Unlike resistance bands that lose tension through portions of the movement, this exercise keeps the quads engaged through a steady, controlled lift and lowering phase. Many adults notice improved knee stability and less shakiness during walking after adding this movement consistently. The exercise also strengthens the muscles that help absorb force during standing and stair descent. Slow repetitions produce the best results because the knees stay under steady muscular control from start to finish.

How to Do It

  • Sit tall in a sturdy chair
  • Keep both feet flat on the floor
  • Slowly extend one leg forward
  • Straighten the knee as much as possible
  • Squeeze the thigh at the top
  • Pause for 1 to 2 seconds
  • Lower slowly with control
  • Perform 10 to 12 repetitions per leg.

Chair Marches

Chair marches strengthen the muscles that stabilize the knees while improving hip control and coordination. Many people focus only on the knee joint itself, but weak hips and poor leg control often create additional knee stress during walking. This exercise trains the entire lower body to work together while improving circulation and movement quality. Lifting one leg at a time forces the supporting leg to stabilize continuously, which strengthens the muscles surrounding the knees without excessive impact. Adults over 60 often feel stronger and steadier during walking after practicing controlled marching drills consistently. The movement also improves posture and core engagement, both of which contribute heavily to knee stability.

How to Do It

  • Sit tall near the front of the chair
  • Keep your chest lifted
  • Tighten your core slightly
  • Lift one knee toward your chest
  • Lower slowly back down
  • Alternate legs in a controlled rhythm
  • Avoid leaning backward
  • Continue for 20 to 30 total marches.

Supported Chair Step-Overs

This exercise strengthens the knees through controlled lifting and directional movement instead of simple straight-ahead repetition. Supported chair step-overs improve coordination, balance, and muscular control while forcing the legs to stabilize during movement transitions. Many adults lose confidence when stepping over objects or navigating uneven surfaces because the knees no longer react quickly or smoothly. This drill rebuilds that coordination while strengthening the hip flexors, quads, and lower-leg stabilizers together. The chair provides support while the body learns to control single-leg balance and knee positioning more effectively. Expect improved walking confidence and smoother movement patterns after several weeks of practice.

How to Do It

  • Stand behind a chair for support
  • Place a small object on the floor
  • Lift one leg and step over the object
  • Bring the foot back to the starting position
  • Move slowly and stay tall
  • Keep the standing knee slightly bent
  • Repeat on the same side before switching
  • Perform 8 to 10 repetitions per leg.

Seated Heel-to-Toe Raises

Strong knees rely heavily on stable ankles and lower legs. Weak calves and poor ankle control force the knees to absorb more pressure during walking and standing. Seated heel-to-toe raises strengthen the muscles that support lower-body alignment while improving circulation and lower-leg endurance. The movement trains the calves and shin muscles together, creating better balance and smoother weight transfer during movement. Adults over 60 often notice reduced stiffness and improved walking mechanics after consistently strengthening the lower legs alongside the knees. This exercise also works well as a warm-up before longer walks or additional lower-body training.

How to Do It

  • Sit upright in a sturdy chair
  • Keep your feet hip-width apart
  • Lift your heels while keeping toes down
  • Lower your heels slowly
  • Raise your toes while keeping heels planted
  • Alternate between both motions
  • Move under control throughout
  • Perform 15 to 20 repetitions.

Historic Sighting: Gray Wolf Returns to Sequoia National Park After a Century

0

A gray wolf that made headlines earlier this year by venturing into Los Angeles County has now reached Sequoia National Park, marking a significant milestone as the first of her kind to return to the area in over 100 years.

This trailblazing female wolf, designated BEY03F, was initially spotted in February on a trail camera near Lancaster. At the time, state wildlife officials noted her presence as a historic moment, potentially being the first gray wolf documented in Southern California in a century.

In a remarkable journey, the young predator, now around three years old, has continued her trek deeper into California’s wilderness, as reported by Secret Los Angeles.

The California Wolf Foundation praised this journey as a testament to “resilience, connectivity, and the future of wolves in our state.”

BEY03F hails from the Beyem Sayo Pack in Northern California’s Plumas County and has traversed hundreds of miles since departing her birthplace.

Her path has taken her through deserts, mountain terrain and dangerous highway crossings.

Gray wolves once roamed across California before eradication campaigns tied to livestock protection wiped them out by the early 1900s.

The last known wild wolf in California was shot in Lassen County in 1924.

Wolves first crossed back into California from Oregon in 2011, and wildlife officials now estimate roughly 60 live in the state, mostly in the remote north.

There are no known wolf packs in Southern California, but BEY03F’s journey has raised hopes that the apex predators could one day reclaim part of the historic range.

Discover the Healthiest Breads: Unveil the One Bread That Aids Weight Loss

0

Whether it’s a quick slice of toast for breakfast, a hearty sandwich at midday, or a dinner roll to accompany your meal, bread remains a comforting and timeless staple in our diets.

However, with the multitude of bread varieties lining supermarket shelves, it can be challenging to discern which options are truly healthy and which ones are just empty carbohydrates.

Nutritionists have shared with the Daily Mail that many breads advertised as ‘wholesome’ or ‘multigrain’ might simply be refined white flour with a sprinkling of seeds.

Some of these options contain sugar levels comparable to candy, while others offer less than a gram of fiber, making them comparable to highly processed white bread.

Additionally, many loaves sitting in our kitchens have been stripped of fiber during processing and are filled with additives, preservatives, and vegetable oils.

Meanwhile that the right loaf can be a valuable source of fibre and protein, helping to support digestion and keep hunger at bay.

‘Bread can absolutely fit into a healthy dietary pattern, but from a clinical nutrition standpoint, what matters most is how much the grain has been processed and how much fibre remains intact,’ said Lakelyn Lumpkin, a registered dietitian at Top Nutrition Coaching.

So which one should you choose? Here, dietitians and nutrition experts share their top bread picks – from tangy sourdough to sprouted grain – and revealed the loaves that deserve a place in your pantry.

Bread can definitely be part of a healthy diet, according to registered dietitian Lakelyn Lumpkin. What matters most, she told the Daily Mail, is the level of grain processing and how much fiber remains (stock)

Bread can definitely be part of a healthy diet, according to registered dietitian Lakelyn Lumpkin. What matters most, she told the Daily Mail, is the level of grain processing and how much fiber remains (stock)

Why 100 per cent wholegrain is the healthiest bread

It may not be as trendy as sourdough or as cosmopolitan as a baguette, but whole‑grain bread remains the go‑to healthy option for dietitians.

‘Whole‑grain bread is a fantastic choice thanks to its fibre content,’ Morganne Brown, a registered dietitian nutritionist in Tennessee, told the Daily Mail.

Unlike white bread, whole grains contain all parts of the grain kernel — the bran, germ and endosperm. Refining strips away the bran and germ, leaving mostly starch and far less nutrition.

The bran provides fibre, which slows digestion, keeps you fuller for longer and supports gut health, while the germ contains vitamins, healthy fats and antioxidants.

‘Whole‑grain breads, when they are genuinely made with 100 per cent whole grains, are consistently linked to lower risks of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease,’ added dietitian Lakelyn Lumpkin.

She warns, however, that the wording matters. Many breads labelled ‘whole wheat’ still contain significant amounts of refined flour, which reduces the health benefits.

A true 100 per cent whole‑grain loaf typically contains three to five grams of fibre per slice — compared with less than one gram in standard white bread.

That difference can have a major impact over time. Fibre is linked to lower cholesterol, better blood sugar control and improved digestive health, and has also been associated with a reduced risk of colorectal cancer when consumed at recommended levels.

Consumers should also be wary of labels such as ‘wheat bread’, ‘multigrain’ or ‘made with whole grains’, which are often little more than refined white loaves with small amounts of whole grain added.

The clearest way to tell is the ingredients list: the first item should state ‘whole wheat’, ‘whole grain’ or similar.

Sprouted grain – bread that help stop blood sugar spikes

Most bread uses flour. Sprouted–grain breads don't. Made from live sprouted grains, the Ezekiel 4:9 loaf delivers serious nutritional benefits, dietitians say (stock)

Sprouted grain bread may be less familiar than whole grain, but experts say it should be high on your list of healthy carbs.

Unlike most loaves, which are made from flour, sprouted grain breads use whole grains that have been allowed to germinate. Popularised by brands like Ezekiel, they contain no refined flour.

This process kickstarts the breakdown of starches and proteins, making nutrients easier for the body to absorb — while also reducing compounds that can block mineral uptake.

The result is a loaf that’s richer in fibre, protein and key nutrients, and easier to digest.

A single slice can deliver around five grams of protein and a similar amount of fibre — helping you stay fuller for longer and curb cravings.

Sprouted grain bread also tends to have a lower glycaemic impact than conventional loaves, meaning fewer blood sugar spikes and crashes.

Many varieties are minimally processed and free from preservatives and refined sugars, with added antioxidant benefits.

‘For weight loss and insulin resistance, sprouted grain is a clear winner,’ registered dietitian Kristen Kuminski said

‘The glycaemic response is lower, and the higher protein content helps with satiety.’

However, while some people with mild gluten sensitivity may tolerate it better, it is not safe for those with coeliac disease.

Why trendy sourdough is good for gut health

Sourdough's long fermentation process breaks down gluten, lowers blood sugar impact and boosts mineral absorption, but only the real slow-fermented loaves (stock)

Sourdough’s long fermentation process breaks down gluten, lowers blood sugar impact and boosts mineral absorption, but only the real slow–fermented loaves (stock)

Sourdough is having a modern moment that dietitians support. Its old–fashioned fermentation process delivers real health perks that traditional white or wheat bread cannot match.

Unlike conventional bread that uses fast–acting baker’s yeast, sourdough relies on a living culture of wild yeast and beneficial bacteria. That culture ferments the dough for hours or even days. That long, slow process changes the bread in ways that affect the body.

Fermentation breaks down a significant portion of the gluten. While it is not safe for anyone with Celiac disease, many people with mild non–celiac gluten sensitivity report they can tolerate it better than conventional breads.

That lengthy fermentation process also reduces compounds called phytates, often labeled as antinutrients, because they block the body from absorbing minerals such as iron, zinc and magnesium.

By lowering phytate levels, sourdough makes those nutrients more available to the body.

Sourdough also has a lower glycemic index than most other breads, including many whole wheat loaves.

The fermentation process creates organic acids that slow down the rate at which starch is broken down into sugar. The result is a gentler rise in blood glucose, followed by fewer crashing cravings.

There are gut health benefits, too. The live bacteria in a true sourdough starter act as probiotics.

While much of that bacteria dies off during baking, the compounds they produced during fermentation remain intact, serving as prebiotics that feed the good microbes already living in the digestive system.

But not everything sold as sourdough is the real deal. Many supermarket loaves use commercial yeast and vinegar to mimic the tangy flavor, skipping the long fermentation entirely.

To get the benefits, look for ingredients that list a starter culture. Better yet, buy from a local bakery that makes it the traditional way.

Sourdough has its drawbacks, though.

‘There is a big push for sourdough bread in the media, and sourdough has many benefits,’ Brown said.

‘However, most sourdough lacks fiber, which is an essential nutrient for blood sugar management.’

Oat bread

Oat bread quietly delivers some of the most impressive health credentials of any loaf on the shelf.

Oats are naturally rich in a unique type of soluble fiber called beta–glucan. Studies have shown it can lower LDL cholesterol – the ‘bad’ kind – by forming a gel–like substance in the gut that traps cholesterol and ushers it out of the body.

Beta–glucan slows down digestion, which means the carbohydrates in the bread enter the bloodstream gradually rather than all at once. The result is a steadier rise in blood glucose, fewer energy crashes and longer–lasting fullness that curbs mindless snacking.

Heart health gets a boost, too. Regular oat consumption has been linked to lower blood pressure and reduced inflammation, both of which cut the risk of heart disease, America’s leading killer.

Not every loaf labeled ‘oat bread’ is a true winner.

Lumpkin said: ‘The challenge is that many commercial oat breads only include small amounts of oats and rely mostly on refined flour, so the health benefit depends heavily on the ingredient list.’

To get the real benefits, dietitians say the first ingredient should be whole grain oat flour or rolled oats, not enriched wheat flour.

A quality oat bread delivers the soluble fiber bonus of oats combined with the general benefits of whole grains, making it a particularly smart choice for anyone watching their cholesterol or blood sugar.

Rye's soluble fiber forms a gel in the gut that slows digestion and prevents blood sugar spikes, a major win over wheat breads (stock)

Rye’s soluble fiber forms a gel in the gut that slows digestion and prevents blood sugar spikes, a major win over wheat breads (stock)

Rye bread

Registered dietitians say this dense, earthy bread deserves serious consideration.

The reason comes down to rye’s unique fiber composition, dietitians told the Daily Mail.

Rye is packed with soluble fiber, including a type called arabinoxylan, which forms a gel–like substance in the digestive tract.

That gel slows down stomach emptying and blunts the release of sugar into the bloodstream, meaning fewer spikes and crashes compared to wheat–based breads.

Studies have shown that rye bread can actually keep a person fuller for longer than even whole wheat bread, making it a major win for anyone trying to manage weight without feeling deprived.

But like every other bread on this list, quality matters.

Traditional dense rye breads, especially those made with whole rye flour or pumpernickel, are the real deal. Avoid light rye breads that list enriched wheat flour as the first ingredient; those are essentially white bread with a dash of rye coloring.

Dietitians say white bread is a top offender, along with any loaf listing 'enriched' or 'unbleached wheat flour' as the first ingredient. Both are refined white flour stripped of fiber and nutrients (stock)

Dietitians say white bread is a top offender, along with any loaf listing ‘enriched’ or ‘unbleached wheat flour’ as the first ingredient. Both are refined white flour stripped of fiber and nutrients (stock)

What to avoid

Dietitians say the biggest bread offenders are standard white bread and any loaf where ‘enriched wheat flour’ or ‘unbleached wheat flour’ appears as the first ingredient. These are refined white flour in disguise, stripped of fiber and nutrients during processing.

Lumpkin said: ‘One of the biggest misconceptions I see is the assumption that the front of the package tells the full story.

”Brown bread’ often just means white bread with added coloring. ‘Multigrain’ can simply mean multiple types of refined grains. And gluten–free doesn’t automatically mean healthier.

‘In fact, many gluten–free breads are lower in fiber and higher in rapidly digested starches unless they’re specifically formulated with whole grains or added fiber.’

Also, be wary of ‘wheat bread’ that isn’t 100 percent whole wheat, along with ‘multigrain’ loaves that sound healthy but offer little more than white flour with a scattering of seeds for show.

Many commercial ‘low–carb’ and ‘keto’ breads are highly processed and packed with modified starches, resistant corn fibers and preservatives, while some gluten–free varieties aimed at non–celiac shoppers rely on refined rice flour, potato starch and added sugars.

If the label boasts a laundry list of unpronounceable ingredients or fails to list a whole grain as the very first thing, dietitians say it is not doing the body any favors.

US and Nigeria Launch Aerial Strike on ISIS Fighters Following Senior Leader’s Demise

0

In a continued effort to dismantle ISIS operations in Nigeria, U.S. and Nigerian forces executed another strategic strike, as reported by the U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM). This recent action follows closely on the heels of a successful mission that resulted in the elimination of a senior ISIS figure.

AFRICOM confirmed the latest coordinated assault on ISIS militants took place on Monday, with the full cooperation of the Nigerian government. Although thorough evaluations are still underway, AFRICOM assured that no personnel from either the U.S. or Nigeria were injured during the mission.

“These operations significantly impair the terrorist group’s ability to orchestrate attacks that jeopardize the safety and security of the United States and its allies,” stated AFRICOM.

This series of strikes comes shortly after President Donald Trump disclosed on Friday that a collaborative effort by U.S. and Nigerian forces led to the death of Abu-Bilal al-Minuki, who was identified as the global second-in-command of ISIS.

“Abu-Bilal al-Minuki, second in command of ISIS globally, thought he could hide in Africa, but little did he know we had sources who kept us informed on what he was doing,” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social at the time. “He will no longer terrorize the people of Africa, or help plan operations to target Americans.”

Secretary of War Pete Hegseth confirmed Saturday that U.S. forces, in coordination with the Armed Forces of Nigeria, killed al-Minuki and other ISIS leaders.

“So, for months, we hunted this top ISIS leader in Nigeria who was killing Christians, and we killed him — and his entire posse,” Hegseth wrote.

Trump’s Influence Sparks Major Shakeup: Republican Senator Ousted, Senate GOP in Turmoil

0

The Hill reports that Senator Bill Cassidy’s (R) significant loss in Louisiana’s primary on Saturday has sent ripples through the Senate Republican Conference. This outcome emphasizes the potential political risks for Republicans who attempt to distance themselves from former President Donald Trump, especially given his continued influence despite lower approval ratings.

Cassidy’s defeat is part of a broader trend, following the recent ousting of five Indiana state senators who opposed Trump’s preferences regarding the redrawing of the state’s congressional map. This has sent a clear signal to any Republican lawmakers contemplating a challenge to Trump’s dominance within the party.

“The message is unmistakable,” stated Vin Weber, a GOP strategist and former House Republican leader. “The Republican Party’s current unifying principle is Donald Trump, and showing any sign of disloyalty might result in the party turning its back on you.”

In the Louisiana primary, Cassidy was considered the underdog against Rep. Julia Letlow (R-La.), who had Trump’s endorsement. The surprising part for some of Cassidy’s Senate colleagues was that the two-term senator managed to secure only 25 percent of the vote, failing to advance to the June 27 runoff. Former Rep. John Fleming (R-La.) secured second place with 28 percent.

Reacting to Cassidy’s loss, Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) expressed a measured response on Monday, commending his colleague despite the outcome.

“Bill Cassidy is a very principled conservative, very independent thinker and probably knew the challenges he was up against in that race. The way it turned out, obviously, the Republican voters of Louisiana have spoken, and so we’ll move on,” he said.

He said Cassidy “can be a real force for change and a factor in trying to get some things done,” noting that as Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee chair, Cassidy heads “an incredibly significant and powerful committee here.”

Thune’s praise of Cassidy stood in stark contrast to Trump’s Sunday post on Truth Social, rejoicing in the Louisiana senator’s defeat.

“His disloyalty to the man who got him elected is now a part of legend, and it’s nice to see that his political career is OVER!” Trump exulted on social media, citing Cassidy’s vote in 2021 to convict him on an impeachment charge of inciting an insurrection on Jan. 6 of that year.

Trump then quickly turned his sights on Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.), who faces a tough primary battle against Ed Gallrein, a Trump-backed challenger, on Tuesday.

“The worst Congressman in the long and storied history of the Republican Party, is Thomas Massie. He is an obstructionist and a fool. Vote him out of office tomorrow, Tuesday,” Trump urged his supporters in a post Monday morning on Truth Social.

Massie is a seven-term House incumbent who has repeatedly defied Trump on major votes. He spearheaded Congress’s passage of the Epstein Files Transparency Act, which Trump initially opposed and then signed into law last year.

A major loyalty test for Senate Republicans will come later this week when they vote on a budget reconciliation package, which may include up to $1 billion in taxpayer funding for the new White House ballroom, which Trump has made one of his top priorities.

A handful of Republican senators have told Thune they don’t want to vote for the ballroom funding because they fear that steering taxpayer dollars toward a lavish ballroom — even if it’s earmarked for security upgrades — will open them to future political attacks.

Sens. John Curtis (Utah), Rand Paul (Ky.), Susan Collins (Maine), Rick Scott (Fla.) and Thom Tillis (N.C.) are among the GOP lawmakers who have raised concerns or objections to paying for the ballroom with taxpayer money.

But Trump has insisted that Senate GOP leaders find a way to authorize and fund the ballroom through legislation, which would help the White House get around a ruling from U.S. District Judge Richard Leon halting above-ground construction of the project until Congress approves it.

Tillis, an outspoken critic of some of the Trump administration’s actions this year, reacted angrily to Cassidy’s loss, sending an email to Republican colleagues on Monday threatening to block a budget reconciliation package from moving on the Senate floor later this week — even though it’s a top Trump priority.

Tillis expressed his disappointment over Cassidy’s loss on Saturday and urged Republican colleagues to delay action on the reconciliation bill so as not to force Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas), another Republican colleague facing a tough primary on May 26, to stay in Washington until late this week to vote on the budget bill, according to a source familiar with the email’s details.

The North Carolina senator accused the White House of setting an “arbitrary” deadline of getting the bill done by June 1 and trying to rush it through Congress. He said that wouldn’t give Republican lawmakers enough time to work on the “major policy problem” posed by the White House “air dropping” language in the bill to authorize and fund the controversial ballroom.

Axios first reported that Tillis had vented his concerns about moving forward on the budget reconciliation package this week.

Senate Parliamentarian Elizabeth MacDonough handed Trump and Senate GOP leaders a setback over the weekend by ruling that the $1 billion in funding for the Secret Service to build security upgrades for the new 90,000-square-foot ballroom does not conform to the Senate’s Byrd Rule and therefore would not be eligible to pass the Senate with a simple-majority vote.

That ruling sets up the ballroom provision to be struck from the bill, but Thune on Monday said GOP leadership will work on revising the language until it meets with the parliamentarian’s approval and can be included in the package along with $70 billion in funding for immigration enforcement operations.

“I don’t think it should come as any surprise there’s feedback and this idea doesn’t work because it doesn’t fit within the parameters of … the restrictions the Byrd [Rule] requires you to meet,” Thune said, downplaying the notion that the parliamentarian’s ruling killed the authorization and funding of the ballroom.

“You try another approach. There was one issue last summer in reconciliation, where we landed it on the fifth try. So you just kind of continue to figure out how do we address the concerns that are addressed there and look at a pathway to do that,” he said.

Thune acknowledged Tillis’s threat to block the bill from advancing in the wake of Cassidy’s loss but argued that Republican senators should act quickly and pass the bill before the Memorial Day recess.

“If we can get it, then we should get it done. I’m always somebody who believes, especially around here, you want to strike while the iron’s hot. I think if we’re ready to go, the committees have acted, and we’re in a good place with the parliamentarian, and we’ve got decent attendance here, then I think we want to try and wrap this up,” he said.

New Jersey Tech Executive Paul Caneiro Receives Life Sentence for Family Murders

0

A New Jersey tech executive found guilty of murdering his brother and his brother’s family in their luxury Colts Neck home in 2018 was handed a life sentence on Tuesday. The judge described him as a “heartless, brutal killer” during the sentencing.

Paul Caneiro, 59, received four life sentences without the chance of parole from Monmouth County Judge Marc Lemieux.

“In this case, there was an overwhelming amount of evidence indicating the defendant was a callous, heartless, brutal killer,” Lemieux stated during the proceedings.

The judge remarked, “This was the annihilation of an entire family, a mass murder executed by someone who should have been their protector… because the defendant’s web of lies was unraveling around him.”

“He remains a manipulative, cold-blooded killer,” Lemieux concluded.

Caneiro was convicted by a jury in February of shooting his business partner brother, Keith Caneiro, 50, outside the sibling’s mansion before going inside and shooting and stabbing Keith’s 45-year-old wife, Jennifer, on Nov. 20, 2018.

Paul then stabbed his niece and nephew, Sophia, 8, and Jesse, 11, before setting the home on fire and returning to his own Ocean Township house, lighting a blaze there too to make it appear as though he was also being targeted. Paul’s wife and two daughters were unscathed.

Jennifer’s mother, Bette Karidis, told the judge ahead of sentencing that “a thousand years would not be enough” of a punishment for Paul, whom she slammed as a “monster” and “pure evil.”

“In an act of pure evil, he took the life of four innocent people,” Karidis said. “His own flesh and blood out of grief and selfishness. He disgusts us.

“He stole the source of joy and happiness in our lives and replaced it with bottomless sadness, sorrow and grief.”

Jennifer’s sister, Bonnie Karidis, called for the harshest sentence possible, saying Paul “must be removed from society.”

“The sheer malice and betrayal is unbearable,” Bonnie said. “They were executed and tortured by someone who was family … they welcomed him into their space and he took their lives for material wealth.

“The satin in this room stole decades of laughter, holidays, graduations and weddings from all of us for temporary material wealth,” Bonnie said.

Paul looked on somberly, wearing yellow jail clothes. He did not speak in court but his lawyer Monika Mastellone said he “maintains his innocence.”

“The amount of loss and devastation is truly immeasurable,” Mastellone said. “There is nothing I can say to mitigate that tragedy.”

Paul was driven to the grisly slayings in a bid to silence Keith after the younger brother confronted Paul about stealing $80,000 from Keith’s trust meant to fund his life insurance policy, prosecutors alleged at trial.

Paul — who owned a tech company and an extermination company with Keith — was struggling financially, paying for four luxury cars and bankrolling trips with his gal pal Yisel Restrepo, prosecutors claimed.

Meanwhile, Paul’s lawyer, Monika Mastellone, argued at trial that a third Caneiro brother, Corey, may have actually been responsible for the murders and framed Paul.

Paul would forfeit his share of Keith’s $3 million trust if convicted of murder, leaving Corey as the sole inheritor, Mastellone argued.

And Paul loved Keith and his family too much to ever be capable of murdering them, the defense lawyer argued.

Paul cried when Mastellone described how close he was to the victims.

Paul also wasn’t actually overextended like prosecutors contended, since he was collecting $200,000 in disability payments and the extermination company was potentially going to be sold for hundreds of thousands of dollars, Mastellone argued.

The jury found Paul guilty of all charges, including murder, aggravated arson, weapons possession and hindering apprehension.

Jacob Elordi’s Romance with Kendall Jenner Takes a Surprising Turn

Picture this: cruising around Los Angeles on double dates and enjoying rosé straight from the bottle on a Hawaiian beach. It seems like the picture-perfect start to a new high-profile romance.

Kendall Jenner, now 30, appears to be following in her younger sister Kylie’s footsteps by dating a movie star. She’s been spotted looking more infatuated than ever with Oscar-nominated actor Jacob Elordi, who is 28, over the weekend.

However, there’s a twist. Elordi, known for his recent role in the hit film “Wuthering Heights,” had dropped out of this month’s prestigious Cannes Film Festival, reportedly due to a broken foot, and has been keeping a low profile while recovering.

Yet, when the couple was seen on a Hawaiian beach, there was no sign of an orthopedic cast or boot. Elordi was even spotted driving during a double date in LA with Kendall, Kylie, and her longtime boyfriend Timothee Chalamet. This has led some to speculate whether the injury was merely an excuse to skip the festival, which some claim has lost its former glamorous appeal.

Adding to the intrigue are the rumors swirling about how Elordi’s budding relationship with Kendall, a reality TV star, might affect his rising status as a leading man in Hollywood. The so-called “Kardashian curse” is said to have contributed to Chalamet’s three Oscar losses earlier this year, stirring concerns about Elordi’s career trajectory.

An insider tells the Daily Mail: ‘People attending Cannes have viewed Jacob’s absence as a bad look, but most have already moved past it and are focused on enjoying the festival. There’s very much an “out of sight, out of mind” mentality surrounding it.

‘In the long run, it’s unlikely to seriously damage his standing or prevent future invitations.’

But, the insider warned that while Elordi is afforded a degree of respect due to his recent streak of hits – in Wuthering Heights, Frankenstein and the TV series Euphoria – if his success slows, public opinion may swiftly turn against him.

‘The bigger issue for Jacob is his ego – if he ever hits a rough patch with a streak of unsuccessful films or TV projects, the criticism and karma could come fast,’ the insider said.

‘But at the moment, he remains one of the most sought-after young actors in the industry. And despite these recent appearances, especially with him being seen out and about with Kendall, people are still largely taking him at his word that he’s injured.

‘Even though Cannes would have gone out of its way to accommodate him and minimize any walking, there is still some lingering disappointment that he chose not to attend. But ultimately, there’s only so much anyone can do about it.’

The Daily Mail has contacted representatives for Elordi and Kendall for comment.

Kendall and Elordi were first romantically linked after they were seen ‘making out and all over each other’ during Justin Bieber’s post-show party at Coachella last month – with a source telling the Daily Mail that Kylie had played matchmaker.

The pair, it is said, have been friendly for years. Elordi attended Kendall’s 2022 birthday bash and they were seen locked in conversation at the Vanity Fair Oscars party in March.

The latter followed Elordi’s Best Supporting Actor award loss (for his role as the creature in Frankenstein) at the awards ceremony.

Elordi has been linked to a number of high-profile women, including model Kaia Gerber and, most recently, influencer Olivia Jade Giannulli.

For her part, Kendall has enjoyed a string of famous boyfriends, including professional athletes Devin Booker and Ben Simmons, as well as rapper Bad Bunny.

Kylie, 28, has been dating Chalamet, 30, since April 2023.

Revolutionary Solution Unveiled: Empowering Australian Farmers in the Battle Against Devastating Mouse Plague

0

in brief

  • Farmers have been calling for access to the more potent control chemical.
  • The decision is expected to give farmers a significant boost in controlling mouse numbers on their properties.

In a significant development for Australian agriculture, farmers now have a potent new weapon to tackle the persistent mouse infestations plaguing certain regions of the country. The Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) has approved an emergency permit for the use of a more concentrated mouse bait, containing 50 grams per kilogram of zinc phosphide (ZP50), particularly in areas suffering from high rodent populations.

This decision comes in response to an application from Grain Producers Australia (GPA), an organization that has expressed profound gratitude for the authorization of this stronger chemical. Andrew Weidemann, GPA’s spokesperson for research development and extension, highlighted the critical need for this measure. “While grain producers have had access to mouse bait with 25g/kg of zinc phosphide (ZP25), it simply isn’t sufficient against the current escalation in mouse numbers,” he explained.

The ongoing mouse plagues have posed a severe threat to crops and farmers’ livelihoods, potentially leading to substantial financial setbacks. Moreover, the psychological toll on farmers, their families, and communities living in the afflicted areas cannot be understated. The new measure is expected to offer a more effective means to manage these rodent populations, safeguarding both agricultural output and the well-being of those affected.

“While grain producers have had ongoing access to 25g/kg zinc phosphide (ZP25) mouse bait, it’s not strong enough to tackle the level of mice issues that we’re seeing at the moment,” GPA research development and extension spokesperson Andrew Weidemann said.

“Mouse plagues can obviously cause massive crop and financial losses in the absence of adequate management tools, as well as significant psychological stress for farmers, their families and those living in affected areas.”

In March, the CSIRO mouse forecast stated that mouse levels were high in regions of Western Australia and South Australia, with the Geraldton, Esperance, and York Peninsula areas particularly affected.

ZP50 is a double-strength version of the already-available ZP25, the only chemical rodent control that can be spread in-crop in Australia.

Situation ‘worse’ than before

Steve Henry, a mouse expert and research officer at the CSIRO, told SBS News in April that the situation was “as bad as can be.”

On Monday, he told SBS that, although his information is anecdotal, “it’s not showing any signs of abating over there”.

“In fact, if anything, the situation is slightly worse than it was,” he said.

Mouse plagues in the grain belt of WA were said to be among the worst on record, with up to 4,000 mice per hectare. Mice numbers above 200 per hectare can start to have an economic impact on crops, according to the CSIRO.

Mouse plagues are defined by the CSIRO as population numbers above 800 to 1,000 per hectare.

“People are still baiting, they’re still losing crop as a result of high numbers. Anecdotally, I’m hearing stories of people about doing houses because they can’t get the mice out,” Henry said.

CSIRO data shows that the current outbreaks are centered around southern SA and south-western WA.

The decision to licence the use of ZP50 was supported by the GPA, the CSIRO, and the government’s Grains Research and Development Corporation.

The permit is temporary and used as an emergency measure because further research still needs to be done on the broader impact ZP50 might have on other wildlife and the environment.

APVMA chief executive Scott Hansen said that the permit was granted following two consultations with every state and is in line with “the strong safety and environmental standards that Australians expect”.

“This prioritisation does not mean taking shortcuts in examination of the product and the way in which it is proposed to be used, including its potential impacts on human health, wildlife and the environment,” he said.

Henry, whose research underpins the development of the rodent-targeting toxin, told SBS News that he has not seen any bird deaths associated with the use of the bait, but that it is important that farmers follow the safety guidelines.

“There’s still a bit of work to be done around the impact on non-target species but we don’t seem to see any non-target mammals in these cropping systems,” he said.

Mouse plagues typically follow successful crop seasons, with wet weather and high yields providing perfect conditions for mice breeding. Female mice can give birth to 10 pups every 20 days and fall pregnant two to three days afterwards.

“If you’ve got 100 female mice per hectare, you’re only three weeks away from having over 600 mice per hectare,” Henry said.

Farmers in trouble

Farmers in Australia have been affected by rising fuel costs thanks to the ongoing war in the Middle East. That conflict has also disrupted fertiliser supplies, making the current sewing season significantly more expensive than previous ones.

In addition, the Bureau of Meteorology has said every jurisdiction outside of the Northern Territory experienced lower-than-average rainfall in April, with NSW experiencing the second driest month since records began in 1900. Some water storage systems in the eastern and southern states are at 50 per cent capacity or lower.

With a “super El Niño” weather system potentially on the forecast for later this year, the combined stresses are likely to have a negative impact on the wider agricultural system.

Mouse plagues and the costs to control them are only set to increase food production expenses, but Henry said that farmers are used to dealing with difficult conditions while still producing crop yields and that the emergency licensing of ZP50 will only assist them.

“There’s still a lot of crops to be sown and bait application as the remainder of the crop is sown is really important,” he said.

The GPA is offering online information sessions and training programs for farmers who are interested in using the bait.

Tragic Discovery: Missing Italian Divers Found Dead in Maldives’ Infamous ‘Shark Cave

0

In a tragic turn of events, rescue teams have discovered the remains of four Italian divers who had gone missing during an ambitious dive into an underwater cave in the Maldives. The Italian Foreign Ministry confirmed the grim discovery on Monday, occurring days after the divers embarked on their perilous exploration beyond typical safety boundaries.

Expert cave divers from Finland managed to locate the bodies in the deepest recesses of the cave network located in Vaavu Atoll. The divers had been exploring at depths reaching approximately 160 feet, significantly exceeding the Maldives’ standard recreational diving depth of 98 feet, when they vanished last Thursday.

“As initially suspected, the bodies were found inside the cave, and not just inside but deep within the third and largest chamber of the system,” stated Ahmed Shaam, a spokesperson for the Maldivian government. He noted that the victims were discovered in close proximity to one another.

The cave system, known locally as “shark cave,” is officially called the Thinwana Kandu cave system, where the unfortunate discovery took place.

Recovery crews plan to retrieve two bodies Tuesday and the remaining two the following day, officials said.

The discovery came after authorities resumed the search following the death of a Maldivian military diver involved in the rescue mission. Mohamed Mahdi died Saturday from decompression sickness after attempting to reach the trapped divers.

A fifth Italian diver, identified earlier as a diving instructor, was previously found dead outside the cave.

The specialized Finnish team used advanced closed-circuit rebreather systems, allowing for longer and deeper dives in the cave’s confined environment.

Rough seas and hazardous underwater conditions repeatedly delayed search efforts as crews mapped and marked the cave entrance before pushing deeper inside.

Authorities continue to investigate the situation and what led to the divers’ deaths.
