Danville’s Star Athlete Brown Propels Vikings Toward State Championships in Four Events

The Danville Vikings are making headlines as several athletes, including standout junior Samantha Brown, prepare to compete at the Class 2A State Track and Field finals. Brown will showcase her talents in four events.

Samantha Brown has qualified for the state finals in the pole vault, triple jump, 4×100-meter relay, and 4×200-meter relay. Impressively, she clinched the sectional championship in every event except the triple jump, contributing significantly to Danville’s second-place sectional finish.

Reflecting on her achievements last year, Brown reached the state level in the relays and pole vault, with her best result being eighth place in the 4×100-meter relay. When asked about managing multiple events, Brown explained that it’s just a natural part of her athletic journey.

“You simply follow instructions,” Brown shared. “I go wherever my coaches direct me and execute their plans. The outcome is positive. The support from both coaches and teammates is incredible. We’re truly like a family, always encouraging one another. That unity is what propels us forward.”

A bustling scene unfolded Saturday morning at a shopping center near Chicago as hundreds gathered eagerly for the release of the Swatch and Audemars Piguet Royal Pop Collection pocket watch. The unexpected turnout led the store to shut its doors for the day, according to local police.

Numerous police vehicles were stationed at Oak Brook Center Mall as a precaution on Saturday.

“The crowd was here for the launch of a new watch. However, Swatch has announced that they will remain closed today at their Oak Brook location,” police informed ABC7.

Early Saturday, a significant crowd was visibly assembled outside the storefront.

The Royal Pop Collection, a joint effort by Swatch and luxury brand Audemars Piguet, includes pocket watches priced at approximately $400. These watches are reportedly being sold online for more than $1,000, underscoring their high demand.

“To all our dear fans worldwide of our AP x Swatch collab, launched on May 16. To ensure the safety of both our customers and our staff in Swatch stores, we kindly ask you not to rush to our stores in large numbers to acquire this product,” Swatch said in a statement. “The Royal Pop Collection will remain available for several months. In some countries, queues of more than 50 people cannot be accepted, and sales may need to be paused.”

It was not yet clear when the Oak Brook Swatch store would reopen.

Louisiana Voters Decide to Close the Chapter on Bill Cassidy’s Senate Tenure

0

In February 2021, Bill Cassidy made headlines by voting to convict Donald Trump. It took Louisiana Republicans five years to decide their response, and on Saturday, they delivered their verdict.

Cassidy, who has served Louisiana in the U.S. Senate since 2015, failed to secure a spot among the top two contenders in the Republican primary. Consequently, he will not be moving forward to the June 27 runoff, marking the end of his Senate tenure.

The runoff will feature Trump-backed Representative Julia Letlow and State Treasurer John Fleming, who will vie against each other to become the Republican candidate facing the Democratic nominee in the November election. In Louisiana, the general election is typically a mere formality, with the decisive contest concluding on June 27.

INDICATORS WERE CLEAR: Bill Cassidy’s Chances of Advancing Were Slim from the Start

In the wake of the January 6 Capitol riot, Cassidy was among seven Republican Senators who voted to convict Trump, a move that placed him squarely in the political crosshairs. The Louisiana Republican Party formally censured him, and Trump kept a close watch. Throughout the past four years, every poll, opponent, and endorsement in this race was influenced by that pivotal decision.

The Impeachment Vote That Defined a Career’s End

Cassidy was one of seven Senate Republicans to vote to convict Trump following the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot. The vote made him a target. The Republican Party of Louisiana censured him formally. Trump kept score. And for the next four years, every poll, every challenger, and every endorsement in this race was shaped by that single vote.

Trump endorsed Letlow on January 18, 2026. She entered the race two days later. The message was unambiguous: Louisiana is one of the most Trump-aligned states in the country, and the president wanted Cassidy gone. According to reports, Cassidy was the only Republican senator Trump’s team actively targeted for defeat in this cycle. Saturday’s result suggests the effort worked.

What the Runoff Actually Decides

With Cassidy out, the race narrows to a question that cuts to the center of Republican politics heading into the midterms: does Trump’s endorsement close the deal, or does a candidate who earned his position without it have a viable path?

Letlow represents Louisiana’s 5th Congressional District in the northeastern part of the state. She entered the race with the full weight of the Trump-Landry coalition behind her, and she runs into the runoff carrying that endorsement. Fleming, Louisiana’s current State Treasurer and a former congressman who represented the 4th District from 2009 to 2017, built his campaign from the ground up. He was in this race before Letlow was. He was a founding member of the House Freedom Caucus, served in Trump’s first administration, and consolidated rural Louisiana without the president’s formal backing.

The runoff is a live test of those two different varieties of Trump-aligned conservatism — the candidate the president chose, and the candidate who was already there.

18-Year-Old Detained Following Car Theft and Collision with Deer

Staff Report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Authorities apprehended 18-year-old Cameron William Ansel yesterday on charges of car theft and subsequent damage after allegedly colliding with a deer.

The vehicle’s owner informed the Gainesville Police Department that she mistakenly left her keys inside her car upon parking it in Bridgelight. A witness reportedly saw Ansel operating the vehicle in the vicinity and pursued him into Phoenix, where she observed Ansel and another individual exit the car and enter an apartment.

After being read his Miranda rights, Ansel initially refuted claims of driving the car. However, he eventually confessed to approaching the vehicle, discovering it was unlocked, entering, finding the keys inside, and driving away.

The second individual who exited the car claimed ignorance of the vehicle being stolen.

The officer reported that the vehicle had front-end damage, and Ansel reportedly said the damage occurred when he hit a deer while driving to the city of Alachua.

The officer reported that Ansel has an active warrant out of Alachua County for burglary of an unoccupied dwelling, but that case is not yet on the court website, and he has not been booked on that charge.

Ansel has been charged with grand theft of a motor vehicle and felony property damage. Judge Gloria Walker set bail at $15,000.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Julianne Moore Sparks Debate by Dismissing Action Films: A Stance Against Explosions and Guns

0

Julianne Moore has stirred up quite a debate online following her candid remarks about her cinematic preferences, expressing a distinct distaste for films filled with “explosions and guns.”

In a candid conversation with Variety during the Kering Women in Motion Talk at the Cannes Film Festival, the 65-year-old actress opened up about her evolving interests in the film industry. Moore, who has built an illustrious career in Hollywood, revealed that she finds herself increasingly disinterested in tragic storylines.

“In these challenging times globally, I find it hard to engage with narratives that feel artificial, where the emotional depth doesn’t align with the world’s current state,” Moore explained. “I don’t feel inclined to invest myself in such stories.”

She elaborated on her experience with scripts and films, noting her sensitivity to “when something is there for stakes.” She emphasized, “I don’t appreciate superficial stakes.”

Moore continued, “I’m not a fan of murder scenes. I shy away from explosions and guns. I dislike melodrama. I steer clear of narratives that heighten stakes without genuine emotion beneath them.” Her words have ignited discussions among film enthusiasts, reflecting the diverse tastes and expectations audiences have from cinema today.

“I mean, that actually bothers me because that’s like noise. I don’t know how to play it. I don’t want to watch it.”

After a clip of the interview was shared on X, many fans took issue with Moore’s statement in the comments section, with many pointing out she has starred in multiple movies with guns and violence.

“I’ve lost count how many movies she’s done with guns,” one fan wrote. Another added, “Funny how artists forget their own catalog until it’s time to virtue signal.”

Another fan shared, “That’s great! Now playback all the degenerate, violent entertainment Julianne has happily participated in throughout her career.”

A fourth fan wrote, referencing the sequel to “Silence of the Lambs,” which tells the story of serial killer Hannibal Lecter, writing, “A man had his skull removed in Hannibal, and brain eaten.”

While many took issue with her comments, others came to her defense, with one writing, “Julianne Moore choosing emotion over chaos is exactly why she’s respected worldwide.”

“I actually agree with her! We already have enough violence in the world! We need good family values in movies back!! Good family fun!! And the movie theaters will be full again! We want to go to the theaters but there’s not enough quality movies going out! That’s why The Devil Wears Prada was great,” another said.

This isn’t the first time Moore has faced backlash, as Vili Fualaau, who gained national attention for his illicit relationship and marriage with his sixth-grade teacher in the late 1990s, took issue with her film, “May December,” which told a similar story, calling the project a “ripoff” of his life.

Despite the backlash, Moore maintained when speaking to Entertainment Tonight in January 2024, that throughout filming the movie, director Todd Haynes was “always very clear when we were working on this movie that this was an original story … a story about these characters.”

“So that’s how we looked at it too,” Moore said. “This was our document. We created these characters from the page and together.”

Moore won an Academy Award in 2015 for her leading role in “Still Alice,” in which she played a woman dealing with her early onset Alzheimer’s diagnosis. She was previously nominated for her roles in “Boogie Nights,” “The End of the Affair,” “The Hours” and “Far From Heaven.”

The actress was at the Cannes Film Festival as the recipient of the Kering’s Women in Motion Award, an award which is presented to an actress who has helped advance the role of women in society and film.

RHOBH Drama Unleashed: Boz Saint John Defends Kyle, Questions Amanda’s Husband’s Wealth, and Addresses Dorit Tensions

RHOBH’s Boz Saint John Addresses What Bothered Her About Drama With Amanda Frances, Fan Criticism of Kyle Richards and Tension With Dorit Kemsley

Credit: Instagram

Bozoma Saint John, a well-known figure from Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, recently shared insights on a variety of subjects during an interview.

Her discussion touched on a clash with fellow cast member Amanda Frances, the scrutiny Kyle Richards faces for her perceived lack of openness, and her ongoing tensions with Dorit Kemsley.

During her appearance on the Juicy Scoop With Heather McDonald podcast, Bozoma expressed her frustration over Amanda transforming a “misunderstanding” regarding her business into something “negative” to create a “comparison” between them.

“That’s what really got under my skin,” she explained. “I was just thinking, hold on, you took what I said and twisted it… After filming, she spun it into this negative jab… suggesting that I’m envious of her wealth and losing business from my online courses. And I thought, hold on a moment. Why make that claim? We clearly operate in different spaces.”

Boz insisted “everybody got a god*amn course” and that doesn’t mean it’s “the center of what they do.”

“And it is the center of what she does, and so I understand why that’s her whole world,” Boz elaborated. “But for me, it is not.”

She noted the comparison bothered her because she and Amanda are “not the same.”

When Heather questioned why Amanda’s husband didn’t use her methods to manifest more money, Boz agreed it was “such a good point.”

“It’s like, why hasn’t he manifested more money?” she asked. “That’s a very – that is actually a fascinating question.”

Boz also noted that, like Amanda, she could run around saying she’s “made a gazillion dollars” but wouldn’t do that, as she feels it would be disrespectful to her man.

She then turned to addressing people criticizing Kyle for not being open enough, specifically about her rumored relationship with Morgan Wade.

Boz insisted that people have to “be careful” about saying someone is or isn’t sharing enough, because there’s “tenure” and Kyle has been on the show for a “long time.”

“And so I don’t agree when people say, like, ‘Oh, Kyle isn’t sharing enough,’” she said. “I’m like, ‘That girl’s been on the show for fifteen f*cking years, okay?’”

“She’s shared enough of her life,” she continued. “If she decides that she doesn’t want to share this particular part, okay, she’s going to do something else.”

Although Boz and Dorit are close friends, Boz admitted they did have some conflict this season over Boz defending Kyle.

“You know, I would say, like, ‘She cares about you.’ You know, and Dorit doesn’t believe it,” Boz explained. “But I was like, ‘Hey, look, there are certain things that she’s doing that to me prove that she cares.’ ”

“I don’t hold the same opinion as Kyle about whether or not Dorit should talk about PK,” she added. ” I think she should! I think she should do whatever the hell she wants to do. She’s a grown woman, let her talk if she wants to. Kyle does not believe that. But it doesn’t mean that I don’t think she cares about Dorit.”

In terms of friendship, Boz admitted she and Kyle just “friend differently.”

As far as Kyle goes, Boz also noted that the reason she felt Kyle was “cold” in Boz’s first season on the show was due to Kyle not revealing anything to her, while Dorit was an open book.

“I think Kyle is for sure somebody who needs to get to know you,” she elaborated. “I think she’s been around the business a long time, she’s been around a lot of different types of people a long time. She needs to build trust first. You know? And I’m now okay with that, right? Where I didn’t understand that in the beginning. And so we’re in a very different place in our friendship.”

SNL Audience Mistakenly Identifies Rockstar as Will Ferrell Doppelgänger

0

In an amusing twist during the season 50 finale of Saturday Night Live, audiences were momentarily confused by the appearance of two Will Ferrell lookalikes during the opening segment.

Longtime fans of the 58-year-old comedian, however, quickly sensed something was amiss when a familiar yet subtly different figure energetically descended the stairs to kick off the monologue.

As it turned out, the man on stage wasn’t Ferrell himself but rather his uncanny lookalike, Chad Smith, the drummer for the Red Hot Chili Peppers. The striking resemblance between the two has been a source of playful media buzz for years.

Smith, at 64, sported a gray suit and an open-collared black shirt identical to what Ferrell wore when he made his entrance moments later to reclaim the spotlight from his imposter.

Attempting to seize the spotlight, Smith exclaimed, “I’m thrilled to be back here hosting Saturday Night Live. Thrilled! I was a cast member for seven years, and now I’m hosting for the sixth time! Amazing. It really feels like coming home.”

But then the door at the back of the bandstand swung open and the real Ferrell burst through and scurried down to the front of the stage to cut off his look-alike.

‘Hey, hey! Excuse me! What the hell do you think you’re doing?’ Ferrell said breathlessly as he stood side-by-side with Smith to emphasize their resemblance.

Smith, still in character, gestured toward the audience and shot back, ‘I think I’m hosting the show.’

An indignant Ferrell replied, ‘You’re not the host, I am. You’re Chad Smith of the Red Hot Chili Peppers.’

As the audience started to cheer and applaud for Smith, Ferrell turned to them and shouted, ‘No! Shut up! Everyone shut up!

‘What the hell is wrong with you?’ he continued. ‘He pushed me down backstage! And I fell! Hard!

‘Lorne [Michaels] had to give me mouth-to-mouth,’ he said of SNL’s creator and executive producer. ‘Seriously, what are you even doing here?’

Smith looked as if he was about to fess up, though his answer didn’t satisfy Ferrell.

‘OK, I’m the musical guest tonight,’ the drummer said sheepishly.

'Hey, hey! What the hell do you think you're doing?' Ferrell said after bursting onto the stage as he stood side-by-side with Smith to emphasize their resemblance. 'He pushed me down backstage! And I fell! Hard! Lorne [Michaels] had to give me mouth-to-mouth'

‘No, you’re not. No, you’re not,’ Ferrell said as he wagged his head side to side. ‘No, Paul McCartney is the musical guest.’

He shooed Smith away and ordered him to ‘just get of the stage, now!’

As the audience started to send off the Chili Peppers drummer with applause, Ferrell interrupted them again.

‘No, no, don’t clap for him. Don’t. Don’t clap for him. He’s a bad guy,’ he said, before admitting that the whole segment had been ‘really weird.’

Then Ferrell suggest he perform a ‘hard reset’ as he began his monologue all over again as if nothing had happened.

But after picking up where Smith left off and bragging that he was hosting SNL for the sixth time, Ferrell paused to say that it felt off.

‘You guys feel that. I’m very off. Chad Smith, he took the wind out of my sails. This sucks,’ he said in a funk. ‘I don’t even know if we should do the show. That’s where I’m at, emotionally.’

After the audience shouted for him to go on with the show, Ferrell joked in perfect deadpan that he would do ‘what the host does when they don’t have any ideas, so I’ll take questions from the audience.’

After deciding the monologue just felt off after Smith's intrusion, Ferrell decided to answer audience questions, with the first one going to Paul McCartney, who was convinced that Ferrell was actually the Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer

He took his first question from ‘the cute one,’ which turned out to be Paul McCartney.

‘Yeah, I have a question. What do you think you’re doing, Chad?’ said McCartney.

Ferrell invited him onstage to clear up the confusion, admitting that he and Smith ‘do look a lot alike,’ but the Beatles bassist wasn’t convinced.

‘Nice try, Chad. Get back behind the drums where you belong!’ McCartney shouted.

‘Paul, with all due respect, you look like a fool right now,’ the Elf star said.

He admitted McCartney had written some great songs, and started naming a few, but the list continued to grow as Ferrell continued naming classic after classic, both from the singer–songwriter’s days in the Beatles, as well as from his solo material.

Several songs in, McCartney suggested ‘Penny Lane,’ which Ferrell was suddenly dismissive of.

He added that there were several great songs the rocker hadn’t written, including ‘the alphabet song, Timber featuring Pitbull,’ and ‘all the Smash Mouth stuff.’

But McCartney simply whispered, ‘Get your a** behind the drums, Chad.’

Then Smith ran back out to sign off before the first post-monologue sketch of the night.

On social media, fans marveled at just how good of a match Smith made for Ferrell.

‘They really do look alike!’ one person wrote on X, while another fan called his cameo ‘epic.’

Another fan wrote that ‘Chad and Will side by side FINALLY proves they are TWO separate people!!!! Hilarious!’

One poster opined that ‘Will & Chad could literally be twins, lol.’

Contrary to what many viewers at home thought, Ferrell and Smith have already been side by side before.

The two poked fun at their resemblance, which has long been a subject of memes, back in 2014, when they appeared together on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon for a charity drumming competition.

Ferrell and Smith even hung out recently, as they were spotted sitting near each other in April at game three of the Stanley Cup playoffs between the LA Kings and the Colorado Avalanche.

DCLM Daily Manna 17 May 2026 — Spiritual Wisdom

DCLM Daily Manna 17 May 2026 Devotional by Pastor W. F. Kumuyi — Spiritual Wisdom

TOPIC: Spiritual Wisdom (DCLM Daily Manna 17 May 2026)

KEY VERSE: But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned – 1 Corinthians 2:14

TEXT: 1 Corinthians 2:11-15 (KJV)

11 For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God.

12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.

13 Which things also we speak, not in the words which man’s wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.

14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

15 But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man.

DCLM Daily Manna For Today MESSAGE:

Scholars, philosophers and theologians have debated the importance of intellectual knowledge and spiritual discernment in human affairs for centuries. The Enlightenment philosophers, notably Jean Jacques Rousseau and Voltaire, expressed faith in human reason to improve society but rejected religion and the truth of revelation. St. Thomas Aquinas, contended that reason and revelation are not mutually exclusive, only that the truth of revelation is superior. In our text, Apostle Paul contrasted the ‘wisdom of man’ with the ‘wisdom of God’. The central argument is that man’s wisdom is of little importance in preaching the gospel because the Word is spiritually discerned, and the converts are established in the faith because of the power behind the preaching. Hence, Paul told the Corinthian church that his message was not based on philosophy and oratory but in the demonstration of the Spirit and power.

Many believe that all they need to start an assembly is a good education backed by smooth talk and organisational ability. This is why more motivational speakers are behind the pulpit than able ministers of the New Testament. Similarly, some people say they do not need to sit under any anointed servant of God, since they are educated or intelligent enough to read the Bible. But the Bible cannot be read as a newspaper or history book because its words are ‘Spirit and life.’ The essence of the Word can only be discerned spiritually. Without divine illumination or revelation, many of the injunctions and commandments in the Bible will appear unrealistic to the intellectual mind. Thankfully, spiritual enlightenment is one of the gifts of the Spirit God has made available for the perfection of the Church.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Profitable Bible reading requires prayerful divine illumination.

Five Effective Daily Exercises to Firm Up Your Midsection Faster Than Crunches After 60

If you’re looking to tone your waistline after 60, it’s time to rethink the traditional approach. Forget about crunches; instead, focus on these five dynamic moves recommended by a seasoned trainer. These exercises target the muffin top, which often accumulates around the waist, lower back, and hips, areas notoriously difficult to firm up due to age-related muscle loss and a tendency for fat to settle.

Many clients have found success by moving away from the monotonous floor exercises and adopting workouts that mimic real-life movements. Your core is not just for show—it’s a powerhouse that stabilizes, rotates, resists rotation, carries weight, and transfers force between your upper and lower body. This comprehensive approach is where true transformation begins.

It’s important to remember that you cannot selectively burn fat from specific areas like the sides of your waist. The key to firming up a muffin top lies in reducing overall body fat, building lean muscle, and intentionally engaging the muscles around your core, hips, and back. The following five exercises hit the right balance by integrating dynamic core activities with resistance-based movements, providing a holistic workout that engages more than just your abdominal muscles.

I’ve seen this often with clients. The people who make the most progress usually stop chasing endless floor reps and start training the core in ways that more closely resemble real movement. Your midsection has to brace, rotate, resist rotation, carry weight, and help transfer force between your upper and lower body. That’s where the real benefit starts to happen.

Spot reduction still isn’t how fat loss works. You can’t pick the sides of your waist and force fat to disappear from that exact area. Firming the muffin top comes from lowering overall body fat, building lean muscle, and training the muscles around your core, hips, and back with intention. These five exercises hit that sweet spot by combining dynamic core work with loaded, resistance-based movements that challenge more than just your abs.

Standing Band Rotations

Standing band rotations train your obliques while your hips, shoulders, and core work together to control the twist. Unlike crunches, this movement teaches your midsection to rotate with power and control, which matters for turning, reaching, and moving through the day. The band keeps tension on your core throughout the full rep, so your waist has to stay engaged rather than relaxing between reps. Keep the movement smooth and let your torso do the work.

Muscles Trained: Obliques, core, shoulders, hips

How to Do It:

  1. Anchor a resistance band at chest height.
  2. Stand sideways to the anchor point with your feet shoulder-width apart.
  3. Hold the band with both hands in front of your chest.
  4. Brace your core and rotate your torso away from the anchor.
  5. Return to the starting position with control.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 3 sets of 10 to 12 reps per side. Rest for 30 seconds between each set.

Best Variations: Half-kneeling rotations, slower tempo rotations, heavier band rotations

Form Tip: Rotate through your torso and avoid yanking the band with your arms.

Suitcase Carries

Suitcase carries train your core to resist leaning while one side of your body holds weight. Your obliques and deep core muscles have to work hard to keep you upright as you walk, making this one of the most practical waist-firming exercises you can do. It also trains your grip, shoulders, hips, and posture simultaneously. That makes it a much better use of time than lying down for another round of crunches.

Muscles Trained: Obliques, core, grip, shoulders, glutes

How to Do It:

  1. Hold a dumbbell or kettlebell in one hand.
  2. Stand tall with your shoulders level.
  3. Brace your core before you start walking.
  4. Walk forward with controlled steps.
  5. Switch hands and repeat on the other side.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 3 carries of 30 to 45 seconds per side. Rest for 45 seconds between each carry.

Best Variations: Heavier carries, slower walks, offset farmer carries

Form Tip: Stay tall and avoid leaning toward the weight.

Plank Knee Drives

Plank knee drives bring a dynamic element to core training while keeping your whole body involved. Your shoulders support your position, your core keeps your hips from bouncing, and your legs drive the movement. This hits the waist harder than basic crunches because your midsection has to stabilize while your lower body moves. Move with control and keep your hips quiet to get the most from each rep.

Muscles Trained: Core, hip flexors, shoulders, obliques

How to Do It:

  1. Start in a high plank position with your hands under your shoulders.
  2. Brace your core and keep your body in a straight line.
  3. Drive your right knee toward your chest.
  4. Return your right foot to the starting position.
  5. Alternate legs with steady control.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 3 sets of 20 to 30 total reps. Rest for 30 seconds between each set.

Best Variations: Slow mountain climbers, cross-body knee drives, incline knee drives

Form Tip: Keep your hips level and avoid rushing the reps.

Dumbbell Wood Chops

Dumbbell wood chops train rotation through your core while your legs and hips help guide the movement. Your waist has to control the weight’s path, which creates a significant challenge for the obliques and deep core muscles. This exercise also teaches your body to move as one unit, which carries over into daily tasks like lifting, turning, and reaching. Keep the weight light enough to control, then make each rep crisp.

Muscles Trained: Obliques, core, shoulders, glutes

How to Do It:

  1. Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and hold one dumbbell with both hands.
  2. Bring the dumbbell outside one hip.
  3. Brace your core and rotate the weight across your body.
  4. Finish with the dumbbell above your opposite shoulder.
  5. Return to the starting position with control.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 3 sets of 8 to 10 reps per side. Rest for 45 seconds between each set.

Best Variations: Low-to-high chops, high-to-low chops, cable or band chops

Form Tip: Move your hips and torso together rather than twisting your lower back.

Goblet Squat With Reach

Goblet squats already make your core work hard because the weight sits in front of your body. Adding a reach at the top brings more control into the movement and forces your midsection to stay braced as your arms move. Your legs drive the squat, your core holds your torso upright, and your shoulders finish the reach. That full-body demand helps build lean muscle and supports the body-composition changes that help firm the waist.

Muscles Trained: Quadriceps, glutes, core, shoulders

How to Do It:

  1. Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and hold a dumbbell at your chest.
  2. Brace your core and keep your chest lifted.
  3. Lower into a squat by bending your hips and knees.

What Helps Firm Your Waistline After 60

Firming a muffin top takes more than a few core exercises, but the right movements give you a strong place to start. Crunches train a small piece of the puzzle. Dynamic core work, loaded carries, rotations, and full-body strength exercises challenge your waist while also building muscle in the areas that support better body composition. Pair that with daily movement and consistent nutrition, and your midsection has a much better chance of tightening up.

  • Train your core in more than one direction: Your waist has to brace, rotate, resist leaning, and control movement. Use a mix of rotations, carries, planks, and full-body lifts instead of repeating the same crunch pattern.
  • Build lean muscle across your whole body: More muscle improves how your body looks and performs. Strength work for your legs, back, shoulders, and hips supports the visual change most people want through the waist.
  • Keep your calorie intake aligned with your goal: Fat loss still comes from burning more calories than you consume. Focus on protein, balanced meals, and portions that support steady progress.
  • Slow down the reps that matter: Rushing through rotations or knee drives usually turns the exercise into a momentum-based exercise. Controlled reps keep your obliques and deep core muscles engaged longer.
  • Move more outside your workouts: Walking, stairs, yard work, and quick movement breaks all add to your daily calorie burn. Those small pieces make a big difference when you repeat them often.

WHO Designates Ebola Outbreak as a Global Health Emergency

In brief

  • WHO has declared an international health emergency over a rare strain of Ebola.
  • Officials first announced the latest outbreak in the DRC on Friday, with 65 deaths and 246 suspected cases.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC) as a rare strain of Ebola wreaks havoc in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). This outbreak has already claimed dozens of lives, yet the WHO has refrained from labeling it a pandemic.

In a recent statement from its headquarters in Geneva, the WHO emphasized the severity of the situation, stating, “The Ebola disease caused by Bundibugyo virus in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda constitutes a public health emergency of international concern, but does not meet the criteria of a pandemic emergency.”

Ebola, known for its highly infectious nature, spreads through contact with bodily fluids such as vomit, blood, or semen. Though the disease is rare, it is notoriously severe and often leads to fatal outcomes.

The current crisis was initially reported on Friday, when officials in the DRC announced an outbreak that had resulted in 65 fatalities and 246 suspected infections.

By the following day, the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) updated these figures, citing 336 suspected cases and confirming 13, with four fatalities among those confirmed cases.

At an online briefing on Saturday, Africa CDC director-general Jean Kaseya said the first cases were reported in Mongwalu health zone, a high-traffic mining area.

“Cases subsequently migrated to Rwampara and Bunia as patients sought medical care, enabling spread across three health zones,” he said.

A high number of active cases remain within the local community, particularly in Mongwalu, Kaseya said, “significantly complicating containment and contact tracing efforts”.

Insecurity in Ituri — where self-proclaimed Islamic State-group-backed militants carry out rampant, deadly attacks — continues to restrict surveillance and rapid response operations, he added.

Of the 87 deaths, 57 are in the Mongwalu health zone, 27 in the Rwampara health zone and three in Bunia, Ituri’s main city.

Congolese health minister Samuel-Roger Kamba said late on Friday that test results confirmed the Bundibugyo virus, a variant of the disease that has been less prominent in Congo’s past outbreaks. This is Congo’s 17th outbreak since Ebola first emerged in the country in 1976.

The suspected index case in the latest outbreak is a nurse who died at a hospital in Bunia, Kamba said. He said the case dates back three weeks to 24 April.

He did not say whether samples from the nurse were tested, but said the person presented symptoms suggestive of Ebola.

Uganda confirmed Friday an Ebola case that authorities said was “imported” from Congo. The person died at the Kibuli Muslim Hospital in Uganda’s capital, Kampala, on 14 May.

The Africa CDC had said it is concerned about the risk of further spread due to the proximity of affected areas to Uganda and South Sudan.

Congo has experience managing Ebola outbreaks but often faces logistical challenges in delivering expertise and supplies to affected regions.

As Africa’s second-largest country by land area, Congo’s provinces are far from one another and mostly battling conflict. Ituri, for instance, is around 1,000km from the nation’s capital, Kinshasa, and is ravaged by violence from IS-group-backed militants.
