A member of the Cartier jewelry lineage has been handed an eight-year prison sentence by a federal court after admitting to managing an unlicensed cryptocurrency exchange that laundered over $470 million from drug trafficking activities.

Maximilien de Hoop Cartier, a French national who also pursues a music career under the moniker “Max Cartier,” received his sentence in a Manhattan federal court on Tuesday. He previously pleaded guilty in October to charges of running an unlicensed money-transmitting operation and conspiracy to commit bank fraud.

The 58-year-old Cartier orchestrated the laundering scheme through a network of U.S.-based shell companies masquerading as legitimate software and technology firms. These entities, with names such as Bullpix Solutions, Softmill LLC, and VC Innovated, were used to channel funds to Colombia, as explained by federal prosecutors.

These companies were purely a front to handle and transfer international drug profits, converting cryptocurrency from drug cartels into traditional cash.

To fool banks, Cartier used forged contracts and invoices making it appear the firms were doing legitimate tech work. He deliberately broke transactions into chunks to avoid bank scrutiny.

The scheme, dubbed the “Cartier Cell” by feds, dates back to at least 2018.

The jewelry heir told an undercover FBI agent he considered a New York City hotel his second home, where he handled his crypto clients, lawyers and banks.

In 2021, DEA agents seized nearly $940,000 from his accounts after funneling drug proceeds into them through an undercover operation.

Cartier then walked into the US Attorney’s office in Pennsylvania with forged business records and talked prosecutors into returning a portion of the money before agents built the case that ultimately put him away.

Cartier, a French resident and Argentine citizen, was ordered to pay $2,362,160 in forfeiture — his cut of the laundering operation — and forfeit several shell company bank accounts.

US Attorney John Clayton said that the Cartier “exploited his knowledge of US and international financial systems to launder drug money and other crime proceeds.” 

Cartier’s social media advertises his music career, including his new single, “Somos Novios.”

An Illinois resident has been ordered to remain incarcerated following his arrest related to the tragic death of his infant child.

Jaden Hearns, age 27, faces charges including murder, aggravated domestic battery, and aggravated battery on a child after the passing of his 7-month-old son on a recent Sunday. Local news station WIFR reported, based on court documents, that authorities were alerted to the situation via a call about an unresponsive infant at Hearns’ Rockford home that morning. The baby was promptly transported to the hospital but sadly succumbed to his injuries the same day.

Authorities mentioned that Hearns was the sole caregiver present with the infant that morning, yet his recounting of the incident was inconsistent.

The court documents revealed the child suffered from two separate skull fractures, multiple rib fractures, and a broken femur. Initially, when questioned by police about the circumstances surrounding his son’s condition, Hearns claimed ignorance regarding the cause of the injuries.

Subsequent questioning led Hearns to disclose that he was engaged in video gaming around 3:45 a.m. on Sunday when he heard his baby crying, though the child had been asleep prior. He reportedly cited poor memory and an unclear sense of time as reasons for his inconsistent explanations.

Local ABC affiliate WTVO reported that Hearns was on pretrial release in connection with a domestic battery case in which he allegedly strangled the baby’s mother while she was pregnant. He was ordered in November 2025 not to have any contact with her while he was out of custody. According to court documents, the woman and Hearns did not live together, but she often stayed overnight at his home. She was not at home when Hearns was watching their son.

According to the court documents, surveillance cameras caught Hearns carrying a firearm around the house. Police said they found a rifle and ammunition on the property.

Authorities said the baby died of blunt force trauma.

During a hearing on Tuesday, a judge said Hearns violated his previous release conditions in connection with the domestic battery case and ordered him to remain in the Winnebago County Jail. His next court date is scheduled for May 27.

Previously, in a move aimed at addressing the issue of nonviolent drug offenders, President Biden commuted Buckner’s sentence on January 17, allowing for his early release after serving less than two years. This initiative was part of a broader effort to reduce the prison population of individuals convicted of nonviolent drug offenses.

However, Buckner’s freedom was short-lived. According to allegations, he swiftly resumed his criminal activities, prompting the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) to undertake both covert and physical surveillance of him starting last July.

The situation culminated in a criminal complaint filed last Thursday in the US District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan, where Buckner is characterized as a “large-scale narcotics trafficker.” This development underscores the complexities and challenges inherent in the ongoing debate over the handling of nonviolent drug offenses and the effectiveness of rehabilitation efforts.

Buckner was described as a ‘large–scale narcotics trafficker,’ per a criminal complaint filed last Thursday in the US District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan.

He was charged with distribution and conspiracy to distribute more than five kilograms of cocaine. 

Law enforcement believed Buckner had been ‘distributing narcotics throughout the city of Saginaw at the kilogram level,’ per the complaint, which also mentioned links to Detroit.

Buckner allegedly appeared to be ‘utilizing several individuals to further his efforts in an attempt to evade detection by law enforcement.’

The ATF and the Bay Area Narcotics Enforcement Team (BAYANET) conducted surveillance of Buckner, per the legal filing.

According to the document, the surveillance was so extensive that both agencies became so familiar with Buckner that they could ‘identify his vehicles utilized and current address.’

A ‘confidential source of information’ indicated to detectives that they could ‘purchase narcotics’ from Buckner’s associates, according to the complaint.

The same source also told detectives that he was ‘familiar’ with Buckner.

Buckner was charged alongside Tawan Terrell, Emanuel Daniels and Courtney Terry, per the filing.

Detectives began surveilling Terrell this February and allegedly connected him to Buckner in both Detroit and Saginaw.

Last month, detectives allegedly spotted Buckner driving Terrell’s car, with the latter in the passenger seat, to Detroit.

They allegedly met with Terry, who was described in the filing as Buckner’s ‘known associate and girlfriend.’

Law enforcement then watched Terry and Buckner drive to a storage facility in Saginaw.

Surveillance video allegedly showed Terry ‘carrying a pink Bogg–style bag into the unit that appeared to be full, but when she exited the bag [was] noticeably less full.’

The storage unit was raided by detectives last month after obtaining a state search warrant, according to the complaint.

A plastic tote with a ‘skunk Sling Smell–Proof Bag’ and a large quantity of scented dryer sheets was allegedly found inside Terry’s unit.

The sheets were used to conceal seven kilograms of cocaine and ‘each weighed over 1,000 grams with packaging,’ the filing read. 

In September 2020, Buckner was indicted by a federal grand jury on 21 combined charges related to narcotics sales, according to MLive. 

He later pleaded guilty to distributing more than 28 grams of cocaine base and was sentenced to seven years and 10 months in federal prison.

Biden commuted Buckner’s sentence last January 17 when he did the same for nearly 2,500 people who were ‘convicted of nonviolent drug offenses who are serving disproportionately long sentences compared to the sentences they would receive today under current law, policy, and practice,’ per a statement released then.

Buckner and Terrell were later followed to a home in the 300 block of North Carolina Street in Saginaw.

Terrell allegedly ‘retrieved a small black plastic bag from his back seat and walked toward Buckner with it.’

When both men were near each other, police arrived, prompting Terrell to allegedly ‘run up the driveway’ and Buckner to ‘walk away.’

Both men were arrested and the black bag Terrell had on him had ‘a kilogram of cocaine inside of it, per the complaint.

At a separate home in Saginaw, investigators claimed they found more than 600 grams of cocaine hidden in ceiling tiles.

Additionally, 49 grams of crack cocaine were allegedly found ‘hidden in a sock.’

‘There was also evidence of manufacturing crack cocaine and distribution within the building including plastic baggies, a pill press, digital scales which tested positive for cocaine, a microwave which also tested positive for cocaine, several boxes of baking soda, and a Pyrex Measuring cup,’ the complaint read.

Buckner is currently in custody in the Bay County Jail, according to The Detroit News. 

If convicted, he faces at least 15 years in prison.

The Daily Mail has reached out to the ATF, which signed the criminal complaint, for comment.

A lawyer for Buckner was not immediately listed.

Law enforcement officials have apprehended a suspect in connection with the horrific slayings of an Alabama woman, her pregnant teenage daughter, and her 12-year-old son. The victims were discovered bound within their residence on April 20.

Mobile County Sheriff Paul Burch announced that 54-year-old William Graham Oliver faces eight charges of capital murder, as reported by the local news outlet WALA. Oliver was taken into custody and booked into jail on Tuesday.

According to previous reports from Fox News Digital, deputies from the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call at a home in Wilmer, Alabama, shortly after 2:30 a.m. on April 20. Inside, they found the three victims in separate rooms, each with their hands tied behind their backs.

The victims were identified as 46-year-old Lisa Gail Fields, who suffered fatal stab wounds; 17-year-old Keziah Arionna Luker, who was shot; and Thomas Cordelle Jr., 12, who had his throat slashed and was nearly decapitated.

Authorities confirmed on Monday that Lisa Fields and her two children, Thomas Cordelle Jr. and Keziah Luker, were found brutally murdered in their Alabama residence. This information was initially reported by WALA.

Burch described the scene as “brutal” and noted the home was “left in disarray.”

Luker’s 18-month-old child was found unharmed in the home. Her unborn child, who was seven or eight months along, also died.

The unborn child’s father, who works offshore, triggered the discovery after he could not reach Luker when he saw her phone activated on Life 360, the sheriff said. Another family member went to check on her and found the deceased family.

Burch said Oliver knew the family “for quite some time” and was inside the home “looking for something” the night before the bodies were found, according to the report.

“Very very tight timeline,” Burch told reporters. “Very solid circumstantial evidence at this point, and we feel confident that we have the right man.”

Burch said investigators have pinpointed what Oliver was allegedly looking for and his motive but did not release those details to the public, the outlet reported.

Shortly after the killings, investigators said they believed more than one person was involved in the killings because the victims had been subdued using zip ties and flex cuffs. It is unclear if any additional suspects have been identified.

Jail records show Oliver was charged with first-degree theft of property in 2020, with other arrests dating back to 1990.

The sheriff’s office did not immediately respond to inquiries from Fox News Digital.

A white supremacist responsible for the tragic massacre at two mosques in New Zealand in 2019 has failed in his attempt to overturn his conviction and sentence. This marks a significant legal development in a case that deeply affected the nation.

Brenton Tarrant, aged 35, confessed to orchestrating New Zealand’s most lethal mass shooting in modern history, which led to his life imprisonment in August 2020. The case drew widespread attention and condemnation across the globe.

Tarrant was found guilty of 51 counts of murder, 40 counts of attempted murder, and one charge of committing a terrorist act. These charges reflect the severity and brutality of his actions on that fateful day.

In February, Tarrant, originally from Australia, brought his appeal to the Court of Appeal. He argued that the “torturous and inhumane” conditions of his detention impaired his ability to make rational decisions at the time he entered his guilty plea.

However, the court dismissed these claims, stating in documents released on Thursday, “This Court does not accept Mr. Tarrant’s evidence about his mental state.” The ruling underscores the court’s stance on the credibility of Tarrant’s assertions regarding his mental health during the trial.

“There were inconsistencies in Mr Tarrant’s own evidence, and his evidence is at odds with the detailed observations of prison authorities and the assessments of mental health professionals at the time of him entering his pleas.”

The panel of three judges found the shooter’s guilty pleas were voluntary, and “he was not coerced or pressured in any way to plead guilty”.

“The evidence overwhelmingly demonstrates that he was not suffering any significant psychological impacts as a result of his prison conditions at the time he pleaded guilty,” the court said.

The court said Tarrant’s “proposed conviction appeal is utterly devoid of merit”.

He live-streamed his attack on Al-Noor Mosque and Linwood Islamic Centre in March 2019, before being apprehended by police.

He released a racist manifesto shortly before storming the mosques armed with military-style semi-automatics, indiscriminately shooting at Muslim people gathered for Friday prayers and broadcasting the killings on Facebook using a head-mounted camera.

The massacre shocked the world and prompted New Zealand to quickly tighten gun laws.

Janel Parrish, known for her role in “Pretty Little Liars,” has unveiled her new relationship with professional dancer Sasha Farber on the very day she filed for divorce.

In an Instagram video the 41-year-old hoofer uploaded Wednesday, he dramatically dipped the 37-year-old Hallmark star and then passionately kissed her while dancing to Stephen Sanchez’s 2023 song Until I Found You.

Farber captioned his loved-up clip ‘I’m the luckiest man in the world’ and Parrish replied ‘My’ followed by four white heart emojis and a crown emoji.

The half-Chinese Hawaiian native reposted the Byelorussian SSR-born Australian-American’s PDA-packed post via Instagram story and wrote: ‘Following your joy will always be the right thing to do.’

The announcement of Parrish and Farber’s relationship was met with enthusiastic support from several of Farber’s former colleagues on “Dancing with the Stars,” including Sharna Burgess, Peta Murgatroyd, Lindsay Arnold, and Gleb Savchenko.

Parrish – who boasts 12.8 million social media followers – first hinted she was spending quality time with the 5ft 7in athlete in an April 8 TikTok video of them dancing, which she captioned: ‘When you run into @Sasha Farber in the parking lot.’

This new relationship marks Farber’s first public romance since his brief four-month affair with Jennifer “Jenn” Tran, his former “DWTS” partner, which ended last June. Tran had recently made headlines as the first Asian-American lead on “The Bachelorette.”

Farber’s past includes a marriage to fellow “DWTS” professional Emma Slater. The two finalized their divorce in 2024 after being married for four years.

Parrish is no stranger to the “DWTS” stage herself, having secured third place with her dance partner Valentin Chmerkovskiy during the show’s 19th season in 2014. Farber, meanwhile, did not participate as a professional dancer that season and resumed his role on the show in its 22nd season in 2016.

On April 9, TMZ reported that the Christmas on Duty star had legally separated from her husband Chris Long ‘a few months ago’ after over seven years of marriage, and the exes officially filed a joint petition for their divorce on Wednesday.

Parrish and the 41-year-old chemical engineer – who originally met at Dave & Buster’s in 2016 – ‘have agreed on spousal support, division of property, legal fees and the date of separation.’

It’s unclear if the Return to Office actress has yet lasered off her ‘IX-VIII-MMXVIII’ tattoo she got on her left arm in honor of their September 8, 2018 wedding date.

Parrish will star alongside Jaime King and Chris Kattan in Michael Naizu and John Wilcox’s indie drama, Bound For Glory, which is about a mixed-race working-class couple navigating Hollywood.

LAPD Chief Raises Concerns Over Staffing Shortages Ahead of 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles

Los Angeles’ police chief has issued a stark warning about the city’s readiness to host the 2028 Olympics, pointing to significant staffing shortages and the absence of dedicated financial resources for law enforcement.

This concern arises amidst increasing security challenges linked to major public events nationwide.

During a City Council Budget and Finance Committee meeting on Wednesday, LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell highlighted the department’s lack of designated funding, relying instead on a shared security budget with various agencies, according to the New York Post.

“LA28 has confirmed there is no specific budget allocated for police or other safety measures,” McDonnell stated. “While a security budget does exist, it fails to encompass law enforcement needs.”

“The funding that exists is for all agencies involved in the Olympics, not just the LAPD, and it will be restricted primarily to police officer overtime,” he added.

The Olympics Special Events Unit has determined Los Angeles will need roughly 6,700 officers across eight venues during the 2028 Games, according to the report.

Police will also require an additional 700 to 800 patrol vehicles — a need that is not fully funded.

Officials warned the department is already losing more than 500 officers per year to attrition, driving up overtime costs.

The LAPD expects to log roughly 1.4 million hours of overtime this year, contributing to a projected $16.5 million deficit, the report said.

While Olympic organizers have said the federal government will help handle security, given the Games’ designation as a National Special Security Event, LAPD officials pushed back on that claim, calling it “inaccurate.”

Democratic Socialists of America member and Los Angeles City Council member Eunisses Hernandez questioned whether the scale of police deployment is necessary.

“Do they all need to be cop cars?” she asked. “Can we not use school buses?”
