In a series of decisive enforcement operations coinciding with National Crime Victims Week, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has apprehended several individuals convicted of serious offenses, such as sexual assault and drug trafficking, officials announced on Wednesday.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) reported that these arrests specifically targeted individuals with previous convictions for serious crimes, including aggravated sexual assault, lewd acts with a minor, assault by strangulation, and the distribution of methamphetamine.
Acting Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis emphasized the significance of these actions, stating, “During National Crime Victims Week, DHS continues its mission to secure justice for victims of crimes committed by illegal aliens. By removing these criminal elements from our communities, ICE prevents them from committing further offenses and creating more victims.”
The operations this week have been highlighted by officials, underscoring the importance and impact of these arrests.

One man, Carlos Portillo-Nunez of El Salvador, was previously convicted of lewd or lascivious acts with a child in Indio, California, according to DHS.
Pablo Blanco-Fortuna, an illegal alien from Mexico, was convicted of aggravated sexual assault and failing to register as a sex offender in Hidalgo, Texas, and Roberto Vallejo-Benitez, also from Mexico, was convicted of assault by strangulation in Wake County, North Carolina, officials said.

Guatemalan national Eladio Laines was previously convicted of sexual assault and unlawful restraint involving serious bodily injury in Chester, Pennsylvania, and Alfredo Delgado-Perez, another Mexican national, was convicted of distributing methamphetamine in Los Angeles.
The arrests come after the U.S. experienced historically high levels of illegal immigration in recent years.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) recorded more than 2 million migrant encounters along the southern border in both fiscal years 2022 and 2023, according to DHS data, before declining in 2024.

The individuals arrested are from Mexico, Guatemala and El Salvador, countries that have consistently accounted for a significant share of illegal border crossings in recent years, according to DHS encounter data.
ICE has said it prioritizes the arrest and removal of illegal aliens with prior criminal convictions, particularly those involving violence, sexual offenses and drug trafficking.
While DHS highlights arrests involving serious criminal offenses, such cases represent a small portion of the millions of illegal alien encounters recorded nationwide in recent years, based on CBP data.
The federal agency said the arrests were part of its broader efforts to remove individuals with criminal convictions from U.S. communities. It also pointed victims to its Victims of Immigration Crime Engagement (VOICE) Office for support services.
“Under President Trump and Secretary Mullin, DHS will never stop fighting for justice for the innocent Americans whose lives were stolen by illegal aliens who should have never been in our country,” Bis said.

Mendoza, the latest Heisman Trophy recipient, was the first name announced by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, amidst a chorus of boos from a large gathering of fans in Pittsburgh on Thursday evening.
However, the 22-year-old spent the night at home with his family in Coral Gables, Florida, instead of being present in Pittsburgh. Due to his mother Elsa’s battle with multiple sclerosis, traveling posed challenges for the family.
As Mendoza’s selection was revealed on television, an eruption of joy filled the Mendoza household, surrounded by family indoors and a lively celebration taking place in the garden outside.
After sharing embraces with each family member, Mendoza expressed to ESPN: “These past five months have been incredibly blessed by God. College was amazing, and now I’m ready to embrace the NFL challenge. I aim to prove myself every single day.”
Asked about the Raiders, he added: ‘What a great organization, great legacy, so many great teammates, great owners. I’m ecstatic for the opportunity.’

Mendoza was widely expected to be taken first by the Raiders as they embark on a new era with a new head coach in Klint Kubiak and a new quarterback.
It continues a remarkable year for Mendoza after he inspired the Indiana Hoosiers to national championship glory back in January to cap off a stunning final season in college football.
Mendoza is the fifth No. 1 pick in the last nine in-person drafts – 2020 was held virtually – to skip the spectacle and celebrate privately with family and friends. Travon Walker, Trevor Lawrence, Baker Mayfield and Myles Garrett were the others.
The poised and polished Mendoza will now get a chance to learn from part-owner Brady, the seven-time Super Bowl champion, but will first have to battle Kirk Cousins for the starting spot after the veteran quarterback signed with the Raiders earlier this offseason.
Moments later, New York Jets fans finally got the answer to their team’s David Bailey and Arvell Reese dilemma when they picked Texas Tech star Bailey with the second overall pick.
The first defensive pick off the board in 2026 told ESPN: ‘It’s surreal to me. This is an awesome opportunity.

The Arizona Cardinals made a splash at No. 3 by selecting running back Jeremiyah Love out of Notre Dame.
The Cardinals were considered by many to be trade candidates but their phones remained silent so they made Love the first running back drafted in the top five picks since the New York Giants selected Saquon Barkley at No. 2 in 2018.
He told ESPN: ‘This is very special, my dad was the first person who believed me and he had to sacrifice a lot to get me to this point. So I got to pay him back. I’m going to put it on for the Cardinals. We’re going to do some special things together.’
The first big surprise of the night came at pick No. 4 when the Tennessee Titans opted for Ohio State wide receiver Carnell Tate.
New coach Robert Saleh has added a major weapon for his quarterback Cam Ward and Ohio State has a prolific record in producing elite wide receivers.
Asked for his message to Ward, Tate said: ‘I’m a reliable target for him. Whenever he needs me I’m there for him. I’m always open.’
Tate then paid a moving tribute to his mom Ashley Griggs, who was killed in a drive-by shooting in Chicago in 2023. He said: ‘She’s my everything, she’s my rock, she’s my world. She sacrificed everything for me. I’m forever in her debt.’
Moments before the New York Giants’ pick at No. 5 was announced, news broke of the draft’s first trade. The Cleveland Browns traded their No. 6 pick to the Kansas City Chiefs for the Nos. 9, 74 and 141 picks.

The Giants’ first draft pick under new head coach John Harbaugh was Ohio State’s 6ft 4ins and 241 lbs linebacker Arvell Reese to bring some firepower on defense.
It’s rare for the Chiefs to have a pick so early given their NFL dominance in recent years but last season’s disappointment means they’re rebuilding this offseason.
They used their No. 6 selection on LSU cornerback Mansoor Delane. He will surely replace Trent McDuffie following his trade to the Los Angeles Rams in early March.
‘They (Chiefs) said they wanted to keep it quiet and make this sneaky move, and they made the best move in the draft… let’s make a mark on this league,’ Delane told ESPN.
Ohio State had three players selected in the first seven picks when the Washington Commanders added linebacker Sonny Styles with the No. 7 pick.
‘When I was there recently, I told Coach (Dan) Quinn, hopefully I’ll be back soon. He said “we’ll see”. We’re living out the dream but it’s just the beginning,’ Styles told ESPN.
At No. 8 the New Orleans Saints picked Arizona State wide receiver Jordyn Tyson, who is one of the most talented players in his position but caused concerns with his injury history.
Tyson, who broke down in tears as he made his way out on stage, missed 15 games in his collegiate career with knee, collarbone and hamstring problems. ‘I’m just so thankful, so blessed, he said.

‘I’m going to give it my all and that’s all I can do. The lord said it’s going to be hard, you have to persevere. I promise you you’re so strong.’
Having traded back to No. 9, the Cleveland Browns made Spencer Fano the first offensive lineman to be taken this year. Many thought that’s who they wanted at No. 6 so acquiring extra picks and still getting their top target is a major victory.
Another offensive tackle then flew off the board when the Giants used their second top 10 pick to land Francis Mauigoa of Miami. He said to quarterback Jaxson Dart: ‘I’ll die about this s*** man… I’m ready to die for you man.’
The Dallas Cowboys then dramatically moved up one spot to No. 11, trading their Nos. 12, 177, 180 picks with the Miami Dolphins. Jerry Jones used that on Ohio State safety Caleb Downs to bolster their woeful defense.
Downs, whose brother Josh plays for the Indianapolis Colts, was projected by many to be a top 10 pick so that selection could prove to be a real coup for Jones and coach Brian Schottenheimer.
Other notable picks included Kadyn Proctor by the Miami Dolphins at No. 12 and Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson by the Los Angeles Rams at No. 13.

At the NFL combine in February, Carnell Tate positioned himself at the starting line of the 40-yard dash, symbolizing his readiness to join the esteemed lineage of Ohio State wide receivers. As he prepared to sprint, his left arm drew back, and he propelled forward with his right leg.
During his run, the jewelry he wore—one chain with a cross and another with a nameplate bearing the name “Ashley”—bounced on his chest with each stride.
Tate completed the dash in 4.53 seconds, a time that quickly became a topic of discussion among critics online.
Tate moseyed off the field to talk to one of his friends. Nolan Baudo, a high school teammate who walked on at Ohio State, assured Tate he was fine.
“I looked like you out there,” Tate deadpanned.
They laughed and moved on, knowing that Tate’s spot in the NFL draft, which begins April 23, won’t be decided by a stopwatch. He’s a route technician who’s expected to be the first receiver off the board — likely in the first 10 picks — and his physical gifts are just part of his toolkit. His mind, maturity and emotional intelligence separate him in team interviews, because at 21, he can answer a question generally reserved for far older men.
“How do you handle the worst moment of your life?”
WHEN TATE WAS a kid, his family called him “Mister.”
“He used to walk around just like a little gentleman,” his aunt Astoria Griggs said, “just asking questions, being very attentive to things, following up on things even at such a young age.”
He grew up in the West Garfield Park neighborhood in Chicago, just as his mom did, in one of the most violent stretches of the city. Ashley Griggs held her youngest child close. In some ways, they were opposites. Carnell limited what he revealed about himself; Ashley Griggs was chronically effervescent.
She was the fun mom, cranking the radio in her car with the windows rolled down, making milestone celebrations a priority. Griggs loved birthday parties — especially her own — telling jokes and doting over her son and daughter.
“[Carnell] and his mom were very close,” Tate’s dad, LeSean Tate, said. “I won’t say he’s a mama’s boy, but you know how a mama’s bond is with her son. It’s close.”
She loved watching Carnell play football.
Baudo, who grew up on the south side of Chicago, met Tate the summer before their freshman year of high school at a Marist football camp. Baudo doesn’t recall how the introduction went — “I think we were talking about LeBron or something like that” — but he remembers that he could sense something different about Tate from the start.
“You could tell he had a lot of confidence,” Baudo said, “whether it was on the field or off the field. And you could tell that nobody could make him stray from it.”
Baudo and Tate sat next to each other at practice and hung out after school, playing video games.
Marist is touted as Chicago’s No. 1 Catholic college preparatory institution, and its football team plays in the toughest conference in the state. The program packs the stands and wins a lot.
For as long as any Marist coaches can remember, no freshman had played varsity. Tate made them reconsider. He was 6-foot-1 with silky-smooth moves that former Marist head coach Ron Dawczak said were “ridiculous.” Tate ran precise routes, and seemed to be the perfect antidote for a team that was hovering around .500 near the midseason mark in 2019 and lacking a No. 1 receiver.
One day, Dawczak asked him if he wanted to play on varsity and told him to ask his parents if he could.
“I just remember he had a big smile on his face,” Dawczak said.
Tate made the transition look easy. Over the next nine games, he made a spectacular over-the-shoulder catch while falling down, and plucked a Hail Mary pass from four defenders for a touchdown. “We were all looking at each other going, ‘Holy cow,’” Dawczak said.
He caught 28 passes for 444 yards and five touchdowns, and led Marist to the state semifinals.
After the season, a college scout came to Marist to recruit an upperclassman, and Dawczak suggested he watch a little film on Tate.
“As soon as I mentioned that he was a freshman,” Dawczak said, “he rolled his eyes and kind of chuckled. He was going to humor me, and I put the film on of Carnell, and after like three plays, he goes, ‘You know what, Coach? I never do this, but I’m going to offer this kid a scholarship today.’”
Then, the COVID-19 pandemic hit.
Baudo and Tate FaceTimed every day and played Fortnite and would “just talk crap to each other,” Baudo said.
He got to know Tate on a different level during those isolating days.
“If he cares about you, he really cares about you and would do anything for you,” Baudo said. “If he loves you, he treats you like family.”
Dontrell Jackson, Marist’s receivers coach at the time, remembers driving his son to west Chicago during the pandemic to throw footballs in the fresh air with Tate.
Jackson picked up Tate at the home he shared with his mom and spotted a turf field nearby. Tate told him to keep driving.
“Coach, we can’t go right there,” Tate told him. “People just drive by and shoot at us for no reason.”
Jackson drove to a safer place. It made him think about the mindset of the 15-year-old, and how growing up in one of the most dangerous parts of the city affected the way he carried himself.
“[He was a] mini professional,” Jackson said, operating with a sense of precision regarding his routes and schoolwork.
“He’s a young man, but an old soul,” he said.
TATE RECEIVED AN offer to play at IMG Academy in Florida, but he was hesitant to go. His parents wouldn’t get to see him play as much, and he’d miss his friends at Marist.
But Illinois’ 2021 spring football season was in doubt because of the pandemic, so Tate moved to Florida. His dad said it was more than that.
“He enjoyed his time at home,” LeSean Tate said, “but [IMG] was pretty much college. It was like you just went to college early. You’re away from your family, you’re working out. …
“It’s just a business. Like, ‘This is what I’ve got to do to get my body ready for the next level.’ So, he’s always been more mature. He understands it’s for a purpose.”
Tate’s mom was less enthusiastic. She had no idea that Tate’s instant success would take her son away from her so quickly. But she didn’t stand in his way.
She called or FaceTimed him every day, multiple times if necessary. She flew down to watch him play when she could.
Tate thrived in Florida, and he had offers from LSU, Michigan and Notre Dame.
He chose Ohio State because of its tradition of sending receivers to the NFL. Five Buckeyes receivers have been picked in the first round in the past four drafts — Chris Olave and Garrett Wilson in 2022, Jaxon Smith-Njigba in 2023, Marvin Harrison Jr. in 2024 and Emeka Egbuka in 2025.
Tate wrapped up his studies at IMG a semester early and arrived in Columbus, Ohio, in January 2023. He roomed with freshman Brandon Inniss, a top-10 receiver in the 2023 recruiting class and a reminder of how hard it would be to get on the field. Ashley, always her son’s biggest supporter, implored her neighbors to buy his jersey.
By April, Buckeyes coach Ryan Day was raving to reporters about Tate’s maturity, and how he handled the transition, from academics to training, with such ease.
In the spring game, Tate caught a 37-yard touchdown pass from Kyle McCord and nonchalantly accepted his teammates’ congratulations.
AS USUAL, ASHLEY GRIGGS FaceTimed her son on July 15, 2023. She was going to a class reunion. Tate planned to hang out with some teammates that night.
Hours later, Griggs was shot on West Washington Boulevard, a spot she had hung out at as a child and just a block or two from where Tate grew up. She was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. She was 40 years old.
Tate received a middle-of-the-night call from his uncle, who told Tate his mother had been killed in a drive-by shooting.
Baudo, who had arrived in Columbus a month earlier as a preferred walk-on, woke up the next morning to eight missed calls from LeSean Tate and Brian Hartline, the Buckeyes’ offensive coordinator.
Baudo immediately tried to get a hold of Tate. His calls went unanswered. Baudo didn’t have a car, so he ran three miles to Tate’s apartment and “basically broke in.” Inniss was asleep, he said, and Tate’s door was closed, so he sat there for 25 minutes, trying to figure out what to do.
He woke up Inniss, and they sat on the couch and debated how to approach Tate. Eventually, they knocked on the door, walked in and found Tate sitting in bed. He told them to give him a couple of minutes.
When he came out, Baudo said, they hugged him and told him they loved him. They sat on the balcony together, and talked a little bit, as much as he wanted. Tate’s dad flew to Columbus to pick him up.
Though Tate hadn’t even taken an official snap at Ohio State, his mom’s death shook the program. Hartline said he had “great, candid” conversations with Griggs.
“She was very outgoing,” Hartline said. “She loved to hang out with people and was very passionate about her son.
“She’d light up the room.”
Hartline said he had never dealt with a death so close to a player before Griggs died, and he sometimes questioned if he was handling it properly. Hartline said he talked to Tate and asked if he was OK, but it was challenging because of Tate’s introverted nature.
Hartline said there is a fine line between checking in and nagging, and he tried not to cross it.
“The whole time I was like, ‘Man, are you good?’” said Hartline, now the head coach at South Florida. “He wasn’t, you know, he just never let it affect him and what he does and the people around him. And he just had a very pro approach to it. But the receiver room was heavy around him. I was as heavy as I could be around him, but I just. … That still to this day has not really left me, to be honest.
“It’s weird to talk about. … He’s the one who went through it, not me. It’s just, to have someone I care about so much lose someone so close to him, I don’t know. I can’t say I knew how to handle it.”
According to a document obtained from the Cook County state’s attorney’s office, Griggs was shot multiple times in the head. Four others were injured in the shooting. Manuel Bahamon, 25, Alex Lopez, 33, and Ismael Lozada, 25, are each facing one count of first-degree murder and four counts of first-degree attempted murder. They are being held at the Cook County Jail without bond, and their cases are pending.
In the 10 years leading up to 2023, there were 1,500 murders in West Garfield Park, according to a report by the Chicago Sun-Times.
In a statement provided to ESPN, Cook County state’s attorney Eileen O’Neill Burke called Griggs “a mother who nurtured her son’s exceptional talent.”
“The Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office will vigorously prosecute anyone who endangers the public through these inexcusable acts of violence,” O’Neill Burke said. “We are committed to seeking justice on behalf of Ashley and holding those responsible fully accountable in court.”
TATE’S TEAMMATES STUCK close to him, taking him out to steak dinners on milestones such as his mom’s birthday, asking him if he wanted to talk even though they knew he probably didn’t.
Tate kept himself occupied with school and his playbook. Despite a crowded receiver room, he played in all 13 games his freshman season, catching 18 passes for 264 yards and a touchdown in an 11-2 season. Tate had to wait his turn, but he never lost faith in himself or let his sadness sidetrack him. “He never quit on himself or lost any confidence,” Baudo said.
“I think his mom played a big part in that.”
Shortly after the season, the Buckeyes added graduate transfer Will Howard, and Tate quickly developed a good rapport with the former Kansas State quarterback.
They exchanged sideline feedback on coverages, with Tate sometimes offering suggestions about what he thought might work. Most of the time it did.
Howard, now a quarterback with the Pittsburgh Steelers, said Tate doesn’t like to let on how smart he is.
“But he’s actually brilliant,” Howard said.
“Carnell is kind of a little bit of a Swiss Army knife. He plays bigger than he is. He’s strong as hell, and he’s really sneaky fast. The thing I think that’s so overlooked about his game is how well he blocks. He is a hell of a blocking receiver, and he’s super unselfish.”
Tate returned home to Chicago in November 2024 to play Northwestern at Wrigley Field. In front of dozens of family members and friends, two days before Ashley would have turned 41, he scored two touchdowns in a 31-7 win.
He started all 15 games, had 52 catches for 733 yards and helped the Buckeyes win a national championship.
At 6-foot-2 and 192 pounds with strong hands and fingers, Tate can manipulate his nimble body in traffic almost effortlessly. As a junior in 2025, he caught 12 of 14 contested passes. Despite missing three games because of a lower-body injury, Tate finished second in the FBS with nine catches of 40 yards or more, and amassed 875 yards and nine touchdowns with zero drops.
He was one of 25 Division I football players to become a first-team Academic All-American.
He blew kisses to the sky to honor his mother when he scored.
THIRTEEN-YEAR-OLD Treyvon Brown became a Carnell Tate fan because Tate catches a lot of footballs and gets good grades. Brown had no idea how much he had in common with the star of his home state’s premier team.
On Nov. 2, 2025, Brown’s mother, Shakeilah White, was shot and killed in Columbus. Brown’s grandfather reached out to ABC affiliate WSYX in the hopes of making a connection with Tate. Maybe, Brent Brown thought, it would boost Treyvon’s spirits.
A month later, they met at the Buckeyes’ football facility. Tate signed Brown’s No. 17 jersey, and, in a conversation aired in the WSYX piece, Tate offered a glimpse into how he has accomplished so much while grappling with grief.
“I think about her every day,” Tate told Brown. “There’s not going to be a day where you don’t think about her. … And it’s OK to accept those feelings.
“You’re younger than I was, obviously, so the emotions are definitely different. But just let it out, Bro. You’ve got a lot of people in your family that’s going through the same thing, and you’re all going to depend on each other.”
Brent Brown told ESPN that Tate spent about 30 minutes with his family. He said Treyvon has followed Tate’s advice and leaned on the support of his family when he’s feeling down. He said Treyvon is pulling nearly straight-A’s in school.
“There’s a lot of kids that look up to Carnell Tate,” Brent Brown said. “I hope he keeps doing things like that.”
AS THE DAYS to the NFL draft draw closer, Astoria Griggs can’t help but think about her sister. She has been gone nearly three years, and Astoria sometimes still talks about her in the present tense.
The family’s journey to this moment has been a combination of joy in Carnell realizing his NFL dream and sadness knowing Ashley should be here to see it. About a month after her death, Ashley’s mom picked out necklaces with Ashley’s name on them so the family could carry part of her around. Tate wore his to the NFL combine, and some of his family members undoubtedly will wear theirs on draft day.
Astoria estimates about a dozen people will travel to Pittsburgh to be with Tate at the draft — his dad, his aunts, his grandma and a few others who’ve become like family. Astoria knows his mom will be there, too. And she can guess what she’d be saying.
“Tune in,” Astoria said. “My son is living out his dream.”
Tate has never been one to promote himself. Last fall, he quietly donated JLab headphones to the varsity football players at Marist, a gesture acknowledged on the school’s Instagram, not his. Anyone close to him knows he would almost rather sleep in Michigan pajamas than talk to a reporter about his innermost feelings. Through his marketing representative, Tate agreed to do an interview for this story. But it fell through, with the rep citing his busy schedule visiting teams before the draft and other challenges.
Baudo said sometimes Tate even had him tag along on conversations with his agent so Baudo could do most of the talking.
“He’s super welcoming,” Baudo said of Tate, “and not super outgoing.”
So, it’s safe to guess that Tate wasn’t looking forward to his news conference at the combine.
For about 10 minutes, he stood in front of reporters and talked about his attributes, potential and hopes. True to form, his answers were short and measured.
“If you want a game-changer,” he said, “you’ve got one right here.”
“Growing up in Chicago is great. It’s a tough city, so you had to learn how to fight. That’s all I’ve been doing is fighting.”

In a chilling incident in Central California, body-camera footage has emerged showing the calm arrest of a 43-year-old man from Reedley, suspected of a harrowing crime. This individual, identified as Miguel Angel Saldana Garcia, is accused of fatally shooting his ex-wife and her new partner in a tragic double homicide.
Authorities report that Garcia was apprehended while walking nonchalantly down the street. The arrest, captured on video, occurred shortly after 5 p.m., mere moments following the violent events at a residence on Brent Avenue in Dinuba.
“The Dinuba Police Department received numerous 911 calls originating from the 1200 block of Brent Avenue,” Police Chief Abel Iriarte informed ABC 30. “Upon arrival, officers discovered an adult male and female, both in the driveway, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.”
The victims, 51-year-old Jose Medina and 39-year-old Irai Torres, were tragically pronounced dead at the scene. The couple leaves behind several children, adding another layer of heartbreak to this devastating event.
Following the shooting, police indicated that Saldana fled the scene in a white truck. His subsequent arrest underscores the swift response of law enforcement in the wake of such a shocking act of violence.
That vehicle was later tracked to Reedley, where detectives uncovered that he had switched cars.
A surveillance team then followed his movements back toward Dinuba.
Saldana was ultimately arrested outside the Dinuba Police Department.
Authorities have not confirmed whether he was trying to surrender at the time.
Investigators say both vehicles connected to the case have been recovered, and they believe the weapon used in the killings is now in police custody.
Search warrants are also being executed at Saldana’s home in Reedley.
Police revealed that Saldana and Torres shared at least one child.
As the investigation continues, the Dinuba Unified School District is stepping in to support students affected by the tragedy, noting that one victim was related to a student.
“It is a tragic loss. There is just no doubt about it, and it takes time to process, and being respectful of family members and being here to support is what we are all about,” Superintendent Marti Kochevar told ABC 30.

Newcastle will revisit their interest in Manchester City goalkeeper James Trafford this summer, Confidential can reveal.
It was previously thought a move for the England stopper was off the table after two failed attempts to sign him in 2024 and 2025.
However, with Newcastle targeting a new No 1 as a priority and Trafford looking to leave City in search of regular football, his name is back on the list inside St James’ Park.
Others are being tracked, not least because of competition for the 23-year-old and a salary at City that is close to double what he is thought to have agreed with Newcastle last summer.
That deal looked set to happen before City activated a clause to re-sign their former youth player for £27m, only to then sign Gianluigi Donnarumma and relegate Trafford to the bench. The Cumbrian felt like he had been misled and we understand he has now dropped the agency who brokered the move.
Twelve months earlier, in 2024, Trafford was also ready to join Newcastle in an £18m deal before negotiations between sporting director Paul Mitchell and Burnley broke down. That lingering animosity, from Burnley’s side, did not help last summer.
It would, then, be third time lucky for the Magpies, who have long since seen Trafford as the ideal profile for a Premier League goalkeeper. An asking price of £35-40m would unlikely be prohibitive, but it does mean stiff competition from home and abroad.
Newcastle are also watching the likes of Bart Verbruggen at Brighton, Robin Risser of RC Lens and Dortmund’s Gregor Kobel. All I’ve heard about Ruddy during his two years at the club suggests he would make a success of a senior role within the game. He has often been the man to take team-mates to one side in the canteen or dressing room and listen to whatever concerns they may have, offering advice from his 22 years as a professional.
Players and staff have spoken highly of his influence, something that is perhaps missed on the outside given the 39-year-old is yet to make a competitive appearance.
Ruddy’s departure means Mark Gillespie, who is also out of contract, could remain and continue in the role of training goalkeeper, with a future in coaching likely.
Pope ready to resurrect his season
And finally, at least on the goalkeeping front, could we see Nick Pope back in between the posts this season?
Eddie Howe always leaves team selection until later in the week, but the word is the 34-year-old has been pushing hard for a recall after two months of playing understudy to loanee Aaron Ramsdale.
Personally, I think Pope’s shot-stopping ability, especially in a team that is struggling defensively, would make his inclusion during the run-in a smart move.

Wissa in the goals behind closed doors
Yoane Wissa is another desperate to play before the end of the season, and Confidential can report that he scored a couple of goals in a behind-closed-doors practice match last week.
The 29-year-old was part of the XI that included more Under 21s players, but his performance was praised by staff.
Wissa then remained on the bench during the 2-1 defeat by Bournemouth last weekend and, clearly, he still needs to convince the management team of his readiness. But the word is that the striker has shown improvement and is determined to use his recent frustration to prove his worth before the campaign is out.
It’s La Manga for the Mags
Newcastle will be based at the exclusive La Manga Club in Murcia this pre-season, Confidential can reveal.
After exploring options in the United States, Austria and Portugal, a decision has been taken to train at the internationally-renowned resort on the south-east coast of Spain.
With eight FIFA-standard grass pitches, a mini stadium, as well as golf courses, tennis, padel and spa facilities, the destination has long since been a favourite of elite football clubs. Eddie Howe and Bournemouth used La Manga in 2018, while Newcastle trained there in 2016.
Howe’s side will play a friendly match during their time in Spain, but details are still being confirmed. A game against Valencia, who play a three-hour drive away, was mooted during previous discussions.
The decision to stay within Europe rather than a fourth straight summer of long-haul tours has been made with football preparations in mind. The benefit of a commercially-driven trip this time around was not deemed as lucrative as previous years, especially in a post World Cup environment with star players missing and audiences perhaps suffering from football fatigue.

Us Weekly confirmed on Wednesday, April 22, that Sheets died by an apparent suicide. He was 67.
A spokesperson for the Lake Havasu City Police Department told Us that authorities responded to a call in the early morning hours on Wednesday. Officers were dispatched to an Arizona residence, where they discovered the reality star’s body. Sheets appeared to suffer from a self-inflicted gunshot, according to a press release.
An official cause of death has not been confirmed as the incident is under active investigation.
Darrell is survived by his son and Storage Wars costar, Brandon “The Sidebet” Sheets, and daughter Tiffany Shane Sheets. He was previously married to Kimber Wuerfel, whom he split from in 2016.
Darrell was best known for starring on Storage Wars from 2010 to 2023. The antique hunter was nicknamed “The Gambler” and had the iconic catchphrase, “This is the WOW factor!” Darrell departed from the series in 2023 after suffering a heart attack.

A distressing incident unfolded at a hotel pool in Key West, Florida, leading to the arrest of a father whose alleged negligence left his children in peril. Frederick Alfred, a candidate for the Colorado Senate, is facing serious charges of felony child neglect after his young daughter was reportedly found unconscious and foaming at the mouth.
Alfred, who was taken into custody and booked into the Monroe County Jail, has not publicly responded to the charges or entered a plea. The situation has raised significant concerns, particularly given his political aspirations.
The troubling events occurred on April 20, when police responded to reports of a potential drowning involving a young girl at the hotel pool. According to an arrest report obtained by Oxygen, the child was receiving CPR upon officers’ arrival, yet neither parent was on the scene.
Moments later, Alfred appeared, holding an alcoholic beverage, which only added to the gravity of the situation. He allegedly admitted to law enforcement that he had left his 6-year-old son and 4-year-old daughter unattended in a hot tub for approximately five minutes while he visited the bar.

When emergency responders asked Alfred for permission to take the children to a hospital, he said no, according to the report. A man who allegedly pulled the girl out of the pool told police he was approached by her sibling for help, according to the arrest report. When he reached the pool, he recalled, no parents were present and the girl was unconscious and foaming at the mouth, per the report, so he administered CPR.
Meanwhile, Alfred’s son had also swallowed pool water while left unattended, according to the arrest report.
In the affidavit, police noted that Alfred strongly smelled like alcohol and cited a receipt showing purchases for beverages called “Bourbon and Bubbles” and “Levitate.”
Oxygen could not immediately locate an attorney for Alfred. A spokesperson from his campaign did not immediately return a request for comment from Oxygen.

Keep your hips and shoulders level as you reach.

The 32-year-old pop sensation, who rose to fame with One Direction, and the 37-year-old actress, known for her role in “The Batman,” are engaged, according to Page Six. A source revealed that Styles is utterly captivated by Kravitz, describing his feelings as head over heels.
“He would jump off a cliff for her,” the insider disclosed. Kravitz, on the other hand, is reportedly over the moon about the engagement. The source further mentioned that their friends are not surprised by this development.
Speculation about their engagement gained traction when Kravitz was recently spotted wearing a striking diamond ring on her finger.
This engagement is a first for Styles. Kravitz, however, was previously married to actor Karl Glusman. The former couple tied the knot in 2019 but parted ways in 2021.
She was also previously engaged to actor Channing Tatum, 45, but they split in October 2024 after three years together.

In December last year, Kravitz wore the same ring on her left hand, first sparking speculation they had taken their relationship to the next level.
In snaps taken on Tuesday, Styles visited Kravitz at her hotel in Hampstead in the capital, and the pair held hands on their coffee date.
Harry and Zoe were first spotted holding hands last August, then a month later Zoe and Harry were pictured out with her dad Lenny, suggesting their relationship was getting serious.
He recently said he had to have a ‘real, honest conversation’ with himself as to where he saw himself in five years after watching three of his closest friends get married.

In an interview on Apple Music’s The Zane Lowe Show, Styles revealed he wants to get married and start a family – as his relationship with actress Zoe goes from strength to strength.
‘He said: ‘I stop everything, then I get to decide what I want to bring back in. Like what are really the things that I want in my life?’
‘If you’re like touring all the time and you’re doing this all the time and all these things, there’s no space to really choose.’
‘I think I had a real honest conversation with myself about, okay, in five years, what do I want my life to look like? And then how do I make changes to aim at that? I don’t want to be the guy who’s on his own but was like, oh, I really did it.’
‘I want to be fulfilled and I want to be in great relationships with people. I want to have great friendships with people. I want a family. I want these things. It just allowed me to go like, okay, what do I have to do to create space to allow these things to happen? I can’t just expect them to just happen to me.’
Styles went on to talk the importance of building a future with the ‘right person’.
‘They hold you accountable to the person that they know you want to be. I think accepting flaws and stuff is like, yes, having understanding is wonderful, but you know that I want to be better than that.’
‘So when you challenge me on something. It’s a gift to me, actually.’
After the couple spent the holidays together, including Christmas in his hometown of Cheshire, England, an insider told Page Six that the actress believed the pop superstar was her ‘soulmate.’
