Church Security in Houston Thwarts Potential Crisis: Armed Man Apprehended During Service

A potentially tragic incident was averted at a Houston church when a vigilant security guard subdued a man carrying a loaded firearm and over 100 rounds of ammunition, authorities reported. The man, identified as 23-year-old Emmanuel Ahsono Mbwavi, now faces serious charges, including two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

This unsettling event unfolded on March 15 at Eden Church, which conducts its Sunday morning services at the Post Entertainment Center located in downtown Houston. Mbwavi’s appearance at the church was not his first, as he had previously been on the premises just two months prior, distributing what were described as “concerning” flyers, prompting church officials to ask him to leave.

According to court records, the church’s security team was on high alert when they recognized Mbwavi upon his return. Their swift action to tackle him before he could unleash any violence undoubtedly prevented a potential catastrophe.

Houston Police Department confirmed the arrest and the charges against Mbwavi, emphasizing the importance of community vigilance and the role of security personnel in ensuring public safety.

Based on that history, the church’s pastor asked the security team to monitor Mbwavi.

The security guard told police he saw Mbwavi wearing a backpack and following a pastor into the bathroom, then walking in and out multiple times before disappearing into the crowd.

According to court documents, another pastor confronted Mbwavi, and while the two were speaking, the security guard noticed Mbwavi holding the grip of a pistol in his pocket.

The guard told police he saw Mbwavi reach for the gun and tackled him, believing he was about to harm members of the security team and congregation.

Mbwavi had his cellphone in his hand and was allegedly counting down, leading the guard to believe a bomb could be detonated.

The security team and members of the church assisted the guard in restraining Mbwavi.

While on the ground, Mbwavi allegedly shouted, “I’m going to kill [the pastor], who is a fake prophet. I am a prophet called Warlock.”

Mbwavi’s cellphone was allegedly open to a notes application containing information about killing the church’s pastor.

Mbwavi was carrying a .22-caliber revolver loaded with six live rounds, along with more than 100 additional rounds in his backpack, according to court documents.

Judge to Rule on Trump’s DOJ ‘Incredible’ Defense: Was the Game Given Away?

In a significant legal development, attorneys representing Kilmar Abrego Garcia have urged a federal judge to dismiss charges against their client, arguing that the Trump administration’s refusal to allow senior officials to testify about the origins of Garcia’s human smuggling prosecution undermines the case. This pivotal hearing on vindictive prosecution could have far-reaching implications.

Last fall, amid a climate where numerous high-profile defendants claimed the Department of Justice was selectively or vindictively targeting individuals perceived as adversaries of former President Donald Trump, Abrego Garcia successfully persuaded U.S. District Judge Waverly Crenshaw to delve deeper into his case. The judge determined that the “totality of events” provided a strong enough basis to suspect a “realistic likelihood of vindictiveness.” This led to the decision to allow discovery and hold an evidentiary hearing before ruling on Garcia’s motion to dismiss the charges.

Abrego Garcia’s ordeal began in March 2025 when he was deported from Maryland and subsequently incarcerated in El Salvador at the Terrorism Confinement Center. This followed Trump’s proclamation under the Alien Enemies Act, which cited alleged gang affiliations among numerous detainees, including Garcia.

While the Trump administration eventually conceded that Garcia’s deportation resulted from an “administrative error,” it controversially dismissed the lawyer who admitted to this mistake. The Supreme Court intervened, mandating his return to the United States, which was facilitated in June 2025. This occurred just weeks after federal charges of human smuggling were brought against him in Tennessee, based on an investigation that had been closed following a 2022 traffic stop.

The case took another turn when the judge acknowledged that remarks made by then-Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche on Fox News might serve as “direct evidence of vindictiveness.” Blanche, who had previously served as Trump’s criminal defense lawyer and was acting Attorney General following Pam Bondi’s dismissal, suggested that Abrego Garcia was being targeted for successfully embarrassing the government in a habeas corpus case.

“To remove any doubt, Deputy Attorney General Blanche said that the criminal case was brought to return Abrego to the United States, ‘not [because of] a Judge,’ but instead, because of ‘an arrest warrant issued by a grand jury in the Middle District of Tennessee,’” said Crenshaw, a Barack Obama appointee.

Blanche’s statements, the judge went on, “could directly establish that the motivations for Abrego’s criminal charges stem from his exercise of his constitutional and statutory rights to bring suit against the Executive Official Defendants, rather than a genuine desire to prosecute him for alleged criminal misconduct.”

But the Trump administration vehemently resisted having Blanche and other high-ranking officials testify about internal deliberations, and instead threatened to seek extraordinary appellate relief. As both sides wrestled over discovery and sanctions, the evidentiary hearing had to be pushed back multiple times.

Ultimately, the government put forth two witnesses on Feb. 26, former acting U.S. Attorney Robert McGuire and Nashville-based Homeland Security Investigations special agent in charge Rana Saoud. To hear the Trump administration tell it, neither of them were aware of the 2022 traffic stop until reading a Tennessee Star report in April 2025, which Saoud saw and then told McGuire about.

“Obtaining new evidence is textbook grounds to rebut the presumption of vindictiveness,” the DOJ said in its post-hearing filing. “That is precisely what happened here.”

Unsurprisingly, Abrego Garcia’s lawyers have now responded that we’ll never know the truth because the people with that knowledge — Blanche or his Associate Deputy Attorney General Aakash Singh, who allegedly “handed Mr. McGuire the key cooperator and pressured him to charge quickly” — did not testify.

“Instead of calling the actual witnesses who could explain the decision to reinvestigate and charge Mr. Abrego, the government called Agent Saoud and Mr. McGuire. But their testimony is insufficient to meet the government’s burden because it is both legally irrelevant and patently incredible. As he has throughout this case, Mr. McGuire attempted to present himself as an independent decisionmaker who could not be swayed by pressures from the ‘high command’ to indict Mr. Abrego for vindictive reasons,” the filing said. “He insisted throughout his testimony that he was taking no direction from ODAG and was merely keeping Mr. Singh updated.”

“Similarly implausible, Agent Saoud claimed to have decided on her own, based on a newspaper article (planted by DHS sources according to the article itself), to open a purportedly separate investigation into Mr. Abrego. These explanations for the decisions to reopen the investigation and ultimately charge Mr. Abrego fly in the face of the documentary record, strain common sense, and amount to nothing more than legally irrelevant assertions of subjective good faith,” the defense went on.

As a case-in-point that “senior DOJ officials remain in charge of this prosecution,” the defense noted that Associate Attorney General Stanley Woodward, the DOJ’s top lawyer on civil matters and a former Mar-a-Lago prosecution defense attorney, entered an appearance in the case as soon as it seemed discovery would move forward.

Reminding the judge earlier found the government’s “unwillingness to provide discovery that answers” key questions “particularly puzzling,” the defense insisted the DOJ solved the puzzle all on its own.

“The government has no non-vindictive, ‘objective explanations’ for the decision to charge Mr. Abrego,” the filing concluded. “The testimony and limited discovery the government has produced supports no explanation for this case other than the one Mr. Blanche has publicly expressed: that Mr. Abrego was vindictively prosecuted because he successfully challenged his unlawful removal to El Salvador.”

Two cyclones forming over waters near Australia could bring heavy rain and winds to the Queensland coast, though only one is expected to make a potential landfall.

Severe Tropical Cyclone Maila is currently positioned in the Solomon Sea, nestled between the Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea.

The Bureau of Meteorology projects that the cyclone will advance toward North Queensland by the weekend.

As of approximately 4 a.m., Cyclone Maila has intensified to a category five storm, boasting sustained winds reaching up to 215 km/h at its core.

According to the Bureau’s cyclone tracker, “The cyclone might make landfall on the Cape York Peninsula over the weekend or in the early days of next week.”

Before making its approach, it is anticipated to weaken to a category three storm at the minimum.

Although not registered on the Bureau’s cyclone tracker, Weatherzone has reported Tropical Cyclone Vaianau off Fiji could also bring weather changes to Australia.

“Vaianu is expected to track south during the week, more or less making a beeline towards the North Island of New Zealand,” Weatherzone said.

“While it will no longer be a tropical cyclone, it is likely to hit Auckland and nearby areas during the weekend as an “extratropical cyclone”, a type of system which can pack as much strength as a category 2 or 3 cyclone in terms of its central pressure and wind speeds.”

The storm is currently category three and is not expected to make landfall in Fiji or Vanuatu.

Meanwhile, a third storm, currently a tropical low, is forming in the Indian ocean off to the north-west of Western Australia and Fiji.

The Bureau rates it a moderate chance to attain cyclone status from mid-next week.

In the months leading up to her passing in September 2022, Queen Elizabeth II expressed a heartfelt desire to reunite with all her great-grandchildren, including Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s offspring.

Royal biographer Robert Hardman reveals in his upcoming book, “Elizabeth II: In Private. In Public. The Inside Story,” that the Queen hoped to gather all her great-grandchildren at Balmoral that summer, regardless of whether the Sussex family could attend.

According to an excerpt from the Daily Mail, a family friend shared that the Queen wanted to ensure her great-grandchildren would have cherished memories of her.

Hardman highlights the context of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s children, Prince Archie, 6, and Princess Lilibet, 4, emphasizing that the couple’s relationship with the royal family was reportedly strained during that period.

The tension within the royal family notably escalated in 2020 when Prince Harry and Meghan Markle stepped back from their royal duties and relocated to the United States.

The divide between Prince Harry, his brother Prince William, and his father, now-King Charles II, was worsened after the Duke and Duchess of Sussex made bombshell claims in their 2021 Oprah Winfrey interview that Harry’s family had concerns over their son Prince Archie’s skin color.

Despite the debacle, the family made their way to London for one final trip where the queen was able to meet the young princess, who was named after the monarch, in June 2022 — nearly a year after the couple welcomed their daughter.

Harry, Markle and their two children were reported to have spent some time with the Queen at Windsor Castle in the hours just before Lilibet’s first birthday.

At the time, Page Six reported that the royal family celebrated the birthday girl with a private birthday party the following day.

In addition to Prince Harry’s children, Queen Elizabeth was a great-grandmother to 10 other great-grandchildren including Prince William and Kate Middleton’s kids, Prince George, 12, Princess Charlotte, 10, and Prince Louis, 7.

Since her death, two more great-grandchildren have been welcomed into the family: Princess Eugenie’s second son, Ernest Brooksbank, and Princess Beatrice’s second daughter, Athena.

According to Hardman, the queen was said to have started slowing down and had grown weaker during the summer of 2022.

While her exact medical condition was not revealed by the palace, those with close ties to the late monarch only told the biographer that she suffered from “a number of things,” Hardman writes.

“Whatever the exact cause, she was well aware of her medical prognosis, and it had been enough to encourage her to tie up various loose ends,” the book reads.

The queen died on September 8, 2022, at age 96 following a 70-year reign. According to her death certificate, the late royal died from “old age.”

Last week, an American journalist who had been kidnapped in Iraq has now been freed.

Iraqi authorities announced that Shelly Kittleson, age 49, was safely released on Tuesday after being seized from a street in Baghdad.

Kittleson was in Baghdad to report on the effects of the US-Israeli conflict on Iran.

The Iran-supported Iraqi militia, Kataib Hezbollah, informed KSTP that upon her release, Kittleson was directed to “leave the country immediately.”

Residing in Rome, Italy, Kittleson has spent over ten years traveling the Middle East as a freelance journalist, with a particular focus on Iraq and Syria.

Two anonymous Iraqi security officials said that in exchange for Kittleson’s freedom, at least six members of Kataib Hezbollah who Iraqi officials had detained were released. 

Iraqi authorities reportedly detained the members due to their involvement in attacks on the US base in Syria. 

In a statement, Kataib Hezbollah said the decision came ‘in appreciation of the patriotic stances of the outgoing’ Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani.

Kittleson was reportedly free by the afternoon but her whereabouts have not been revealed. She was previously held in Baghdad. 

On Tuesday, Kataib Hezbollah uploaded a video of Kittleson, reported the New York Times.

In the heavily edited footage, Kittleson said she gave information about Iraqi militias to an American diplomat. 

‘I collected information, but it wasn’t enough and they asked me for more,’ she said.

Experts in international law told the Times that the video was likely made under duress and statements within it could be coerced. 

Alex Plitas, a national security analyst and Kittleson’s main point of contact, said she was an ‘innocent woman and a well-known and respected journalist.’

‘We are waiting for official confirmation of her pending release and look forward to that moment,’ he added per the Washington Post.

The US State Department reportedly warned Kittleson against entering Iraq, given reported threats against the journalist and her safety. 

She was allegedly abducted by a group of unidentified men near her hotel in the Iraqi capital on March 31. 

Kittleson was snatched by armed men near the Palestine Hotel on Al-Saadoun Street in central Baghdad.

Two cars were involved in her kidnapping, officials said. 

One crashed southwest of Baghdad while being pursued. 

Kittleson was loaded into a second car and rushed away. 

Kataib Hezbollah, a powerful Shiite group based in Iraq, is a separate group from the Hezbollah movement, an Iran-backed group in Lebanon.

But both groups are closely linked to Iran’s powerful Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps, and are listed by the US government as terrorist organizations.

Kataib Hezbollah has frequently launched rocket and drone attacks against US targets in the war against Iran, including missile strikes on the US Embassy in Baghdad. 

The group had not previously stated that they were responsible for Kittleson’s abduction.

Some anonymous officials said negotiations regarding Kittleson’s release had been difficult. 

‘The primary challenge is that the leaders of the Kataib militia — specifically, the commanders of the battalions — are nowhere to be found,’ they said. ‘No one knows their whereabouts, and the process of establishing contact with them is extremely complex.’

Members of the Popular Mobilization Forces were assigned to secure Kittleson’s release along with the FBI and the US State Department.

Kittleson’s release came hours after President Donald Trump made threats to Iran if officials failed to reopen the Strait of Hormuz by 8pm on April 7. 

‘A whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again,’ he wrote on Truth Social. ‘I don’t want that to happen, but it probably will.’ 

He has since announced a two-week ceasefire with Iran.

A Connecticut judge has declared a mistrial in a decades-old case concerning the tragic death of an 11-year-old girl due to a revelation about long-standing evidence.

Sixty-year-old Marc Karun was facing charges of murder and kidnapping in connection with the 1986 slaying of Kathleen Flynn, as reported by FOX 61.

Kathleen Flynn, a sixth-grade student, was allegedly attacked while walking home from Ponus Ridge Middle School in Norwalk on September 23, 1986. Her lifeless body was discovered in a wooded area along a path leading to Hunters Lane.

The case remained unsolved for years until authorities arrested Karun at his residence in Stetson, Maine, in 2019.

While the case ran cold for a period of time, Karun was taken into custody at his home in Stetson, Maine in 2019.

During Karun’s trial in Stamford last week, prosecutors revealed that they received an email from retired Norwalk police lieutenant Robert Fabrizzio disclosing that shortly after Flynn’s body was discovered, a state crime lab officer informed him that she had been disposed of in a used body bag, FOX 61 reported. 

Fabrizzio reportedly informed prosecutors that he was concerned about the possibility of evidence contamination in the case, leading Judge John Blawie to declare a mistrial – though he did not dismiss the charges against Karun.

The state crime lab officer who made the revelation about the body bag was 87-year-old Henry Lee, a famous forensic scientist who previously worked on the O.J. Simpson murder trial and worked as the head of the lab at the time, according to FOX 61. 

Lee died last month.

“We’re obviously disappointed by this turn of events, especially for the family members of Kathy Flynn, who have waited 40 years for justice and some degree of closure,” State Attorney Paul Ferencek said in a statement, FOX 61 reported.

Prosecutors are now working with the medical examiner’s office and state crime lab to verify if the revelation is true.

The information surrounding the body bag was reportedly a surprise to crime lab officials, agency spokesperson Rick Green said.

“This is all a surprise to us. We stand by our testimony in the case,” Green said in a statement to Fox News Digital, adding the agency has no further comment.

Karun previously served 10 years behind bars after being convicted of sexually assaulting or kidnapping four other female victims throughout the 1980s, FOX 61 reported.

DNA testing technology advancements and the case’s similarities to Karun’s other attacks reportedly lead investigators to take him into custody in 2019. 

Shortly after Karun’s arrest, police found nearly 90 guns inside his Maine home, which he was barred from owning as a convicted felon, according to FOX 61.

In 2024, he pleaded guilty to federal gun charges stemming from the allegations and is set to be sentenced this summer. 

Karun remains in custody on a $5 million bond. 

The State’s Attorney’s Office and Karun’s defense counsel did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.

‘If I can see [security], then I can remind myself that I’m safe constantly,’ the 41-year-old said. ‘I don’t have control when this thing hits me, and it’s tough. 

‘It can be a fan. It can be a walking score [official]. It can be a camera guy running by me, just any startlement from behind me can trigger this pretty quickly… when I’m not on the course, I’m in a battle, and when I’m on the course, I’m in a battle.’

He added: ‘It’s a big week for me this week. The fans are very close on the tee boxes. There’s a lot going on. There’s probably not a safer golf tournament in the world, so I’m happy for that, but it’s still a battle in my head if I’m safe or not. That’s a tough pill to swallow.’

The father of three was overcome with emotion after securing victory in Houston. He stretched out both arms, exhaled and looked to the sky before tears began pouring out. 

‘The doctors – and everybody I’m working with – were trying to slow my heart rate down, trying to slow my thoughts down just to function and be healthy,’ he explained at Augusta. 

‘But doing those things obviously helps my golf game as well. I wish I knew a lot of this stuff 20 years ago. It’s given me purpose, golf has, for sure. 

‘When I was diagnosed with this brain tumor three years ago, my No 1 thought was: I wasn’t going to let this thing win. I’ve dreamed of being a professional athlete since I was a little kid, and I would do everything in my power to live that dream for my childhood self.

Woodland believes that at times this year his game – physically, at least – has been in better shape that at any point in his career. Even when he won the 2019 US Open.

‘But there’s been times where I didn’t know if I’d have the mental stamina to get through a week,’ he said.

‘I fought hard earlier this year with some struggles, and that’s hard, that’s a hard pill to swallow that this thing could be taken away from me for something that’s out of my control.’

Woodland said he has been shocked by the reaction to his decision to go public with his diagnosis. 

‘It just shows that everybody is going through something. Everybody’s battling something. Whether it’s way bigger or way less, it doesn’t matter what you’re battling. To you it’s important,’ he said.

‘Winning the U.S. Open in ’19 had the biggest impact in my life from a golf standpoint. There’s no doubt. I hope winning in Houston had a bigger impact on somebody else’s life. 

‘I hope somebody that’s struggling with something sees this guy out here fighting every day and still living his dreams, and then they want to get up there and fight and live their dream too. I really from the bottom of my heart hope that happens.’

He urged everyone else to ‘talk to somebody’ rather than battle their demons alone. ‘You don’t have to fight this on your own,’ he said.

‘We live in a world, as men and especially as an athlete, that you put your head down and you fight through it. I’ve done it my whole life. This is honestly one battle that I’m not able to do on my own. I tried, and it wasn’t working. And talking has helped me so much.’

Woodland’s best finish at the Masters came in 2023, before his surgery, when he was tied for 14th. He missed the cut in 2024 and did not make the field last year. For a long time, the 41-year-old admitted, winning a tournament or returning to Augusta was ‘probably the last thing’ on his mind.

‘I didn’t know that releasing this battle was going to make me stronger, and it’s done that,’ Woodland added.

The couple, Lynette Hooker, aged 55, and Brian Hooker, aged 58, hail from Onset, Michigan, according to a statement from the Hope Town Volunteer Fire and Rescue shared with NewsNation.
