Mass Shooting in Iowa City Leaves 5 Injured, Including University Students

0

In the early hours of Sunday, Iowa City Police responded to reports of a large altercation near the University of Iowa campus and encountered gunfire upon their arrival.

IOWA CITY, Iowa — A shooting incident overnight in Iowa City left five individuals injured, including three University of Iowa students, according to school officials. The university communicated these details to students, faculty, and staff in a message sent out on Sunday morning.

Authorities were initially called to the scene around 1:45 a.m. Central Time due to reports of a significant fight. Upon arrival, officers heard gunshots, leading to a swift response. Five people were subsequently transported to the hospital for medical care.

As of the latest update from Iowa City Public Safety at 10 a.m. Central Time, one person is in critical condition while the remaining four are in stable condition.

One person was listed in critical condition and four others were considered stable, Iowa City Public Safety shared in an updated news release issued at 10 a.m. Central.

No arrests have been made, but police said there is no ongoing threat.

Iowa City Public Safety released photos of potential persons of interest and asked the public to contact them if they recognized any of the individuals.

The University of Iowa issued a “Hawk alert” around 1:50 a.m. Central to warn the school community about reports of a shooting and at least one person injured at the Medical Education Building. The alert, which has since expired, urged people to “remain vigilant” and avoid the area.

School President Barb Wilson shared resources to help navigate this “difficult moment for our community” in a letter addressing the situation.

“While we await additional information, I am thinking about these students and their families, friends, and all the people who care about them,” Wilson wrote. “I am holding them close in my thoughts, along with everyone in our community who is hurting or feeling shaken right now,” signing off with “love for all Hawkeyes.”

Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds released a statement, saying she and her husband, Kevin, were praying for the victims and their families. She also pledged the “full resources of the state” to help in the investigation.

“This senseless act of violence has devastated the university community and our state,” Reynolds said.

An investigation is underway, and a $1,000 reward is being offered for any information that leads to an arrest in the case, according to the Iowa City Police Department.

Sophie Ellis-Bextor Shines in Chic Heidi Dress at T in The Park Day 2

Sophie Ellis-Bextor, who received critical acclaim for her previous album “Wanderlust,” seems to have drawn inspiration from its Germanic undertones for her current fashion choices.

The 35-year-old singer, also a mother of three, graced the stage during the second day of the T in the Park festival in Kinross, Scotland. She donned a vibrant red outfit reminiscent of Heidi, as if she had just descended from the Alps.

Following her performance, Sophie took to Twitter to express her excitement, writing, “Lovely T in the park,” alongside sharing a photo of herself on stage, gazing over the vast crowd of thousands.

Headlining day two of the T in The Park event in Kinross, Scotland, the 35-year-old mother of three took to the stage in a red Heidi-like outfit which could have been fresh from the Alps.

‘Lovely T in the park’ Sophie wrote on her Twitter after her performance also posting a photo of herself on stage looking out at the huge audience of thousands.

Despite a heavy sprinkling of rain, music fans came out on day two of T in The Park to enjoy a true mix of music styles and acts.

Tens of thousands of music fans also got to see big name acts including Calvin Harris and Paolo Nutini perform.

Revellers swapped their sunglasses for waterproofs and wellies as rain fell over Balado in Kinross-shire during the afternoon.

Organisers described the opening day atmosphere of the weekend-long event as ‘tremendous’ as the crowds said farewell to the site after 18 years of hosting the festival.

Kiesza, The Stranglers, Katy B and Scottish band Twin Atlantic also performed on the main stage, with Calvin Harris bringing the party to a close at the end of the evening.

Biffy Clyro headlined the first day, with performances from Ed Sheeran and Ellie Goulding also seeing the crowds party in glorious sunshine.

Elbow, Bombay Bicycle Club, John Newman, the Human League and the 1975 also performed on Saturday, day two, for the crowd of up to 85,000.

Police said crime levels remained low, with 22 people arrested since the camp site opened on Thursday, mostly for petty crime and minor drugs offences.

The stage will be packed up at Balado on Sunday for the final time after Arctic Monkeys perform as the festival moves to the Strathallan Castle estate in Perthshire next year.

Other performers over the weekend include the headliners of T in the Park’s first year in Kinross-shire – the Charlatans and Paul Weller.

Festival director Geoff Ellis said: ‘It’s been wonderful, the whole event’s gone really really well. Glorious sunshine on Thursday and Friday for campers getting set up on dry ground, today light drizzle but nothing we can’t cope with.

‘Yesterday Biffy Clyro really rocked it. It’s always been their dream to play or headline T in the Park, and now they’ve played 10 times. That’s a record, nobody else has ever done that, and they really blew everybody away last night, a fantastic show.

‘Today Paolo Nutini, Calvin Harris, Elbow, Rudimental, Pharrell Williams – a fantastic line-up and topping off tomorrow with Paul Weller, Jake Bugg, Bastille, and finishing up with the Arctic Monkeys.’

He added: ‘We’re waving bye-bye to Balado, and it’ll be sad to leave because it’s served us well for 18 years. It’s been a good, practical site.

‘Where we’re going to at Strathallan Castle, it’s a beautiful country estate, so a very different site to here, but still with some big open fields for the main arenas.

‘It will maybe have more of a boutique feel because you’re not seeing the whole site from any one place, so it’ll be like a voyage of discovery through the tree-lined avenues.’

Pleasantly Cool and Breezy Conditions Expected This Week Amid Rising Fire Risk

ORLANDO, Fla. – Central Florida began the week with a noticeable shift in weather as a cold front swept through the area early Monday. This front ushered in a spell of cooler, drier, and breezy conditions expected to persist for much of the week. While many will appreciate the refreshing change, these conditions are likely to create choppy sea conditions and elevate the risk of wildfires.

In the wake of the front, residents can anticipate brisk winds blowing from the north to northeast throughout the day. These winds will average between 15 to 20 mph, with occasional gusts reaching speeds of 25 to 30 mph.

The skies will remain predominantly cloudy, and temperatures will drop to more comfortable levels, ranging from the upper 70s to around 80 degrees Fahrenheit.

As night falls, temperatures are expected to dip further, settling into the upper 50s to approximately 60 degrees Fahrenheit.

BEACH HAZARDS

At the beaches and on the water, conditions are turning dangerous. Strong onshore winds will create rough surf and a high risk of rip currents. Boating conditions will also be hazardous with seas between 4-7 feet.

FIRE DANGER

Fire weather is becoming a growing concern for the start of the week. A Red Flag Warning is in effect Monday for Marion County, with a Fire Weather Watch in place for Tuesday across portions of the area. This is due to a combination of strong, gusty winds, low relative humidity, and very dry fuels, which can allow fires to ignite easily and spread rapidly.

THIS WEEK

Through midweek, high pressure builds in, bringing drier air and more stable conditions. It will stay breezy Tuesday, with northeast winds gradually easing later in the week. Rain chances remain very low, though a few brief onshore-moving showers can’t be ruled out by Wednesday or Thursday.

Temperatures will run closer to seasonal norms through Thursday, with highs in the upper 70s along the coast and low 80s inland.

WEEKEND

By Friday and into the weekend, a warming trend returns, with highs climbing into the mid to upper 80s and even approaching 90 degrees for inland neighborhoods.

Jane Seymour Marks Her 75th Birthday with a Reunion of ‘Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman’ Cast Members

Jane Seymour recently marked her 75th birthday with a special reunion alongside her former castmates from “Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman.”

While her birthday falls on February 15, the beloved actress chose to celebrate with a gathering that included co-stars Joe Lando, Jessica Bowman, Brandon Douglas, Jonelle Allen, Frank Collison, Jason Leland Adams, Erika Flores, and Shawn Toovey.

The celebration, organized by her Open Hearts Foundation, embraced a western theme, adding a nostalgic touch reminiscent of their show.

Seymour famously portrayed the role of Michaela Quinn on “Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman,” which aired from 1993 to 1998.

The show, set in the 1800s, remains a standout chapter in her illustrious career.

Lando played her love interest, Byron Sully on the show.

Seymour had a Western-themed cake and decor that featured images of her as well as cookies with her face on them, as seen on Instagram.

She captioned the post: “The Jubilee was far more than a celebration. It was a beautiful reminder of how deeply connected we are through the people we love, the memories we share, and the kindness we carry forward.”

Adding: “To see so many dear friends from so many chapters of my life, including some I hadn’t seen in decades, was incredibly moving.”

“I’m filled with gratitude for everyone who came, everyone who helped bring the celebration to life, every fan who has walked this journey with me, and every person who continues to support @openheartsfoundation and the work we care so deeply about,” she said.

“Thank you for all the love, for all the years, and for making this celebration one I will never forget. My heart is so full,” she concluded.

Weeks earlier, Seymour enjoyed a family trip to Hawaii.

The British actress took to Instagram to share a series of snapshots from her vacation in Hawaii, where she spent time with her daughter and grandchildren.

Seymour shared the photos alongside thoughtful captions centered on family, gratitude and slowing down.

In a recent post, Seymour walked along the shoreline in a bold red one-piece swimsuit with a front cutout.

She accessorized with a wide-brimmed sun hat and oversized black sunglasses, lifting both arms in the air as she smiled toward the camera.

She captioned the post, “Somewhere between the ocean and the mountains, it feels easier to remember what really matters. Carrying a bit of that calm into the week ahead. What helps you stay grounded during busy days? 🧘‍♀️”

Discover 3 Hidden Gems on HBO Max to Stream This April 2026

April brings a diverse array of films to HBO Max, offering a mix of genres and varying levels of acclaim.

With a century’s worth of cinematic history to choose from, it can be challenging to keep tabs on the more modestly celebrated titles.

To help you navigate this vast selection, the Watch With Us team has curated a list of three overlooked gems on HBO Max that you shouldn’t miss this April 2026.

This month, our picks feature a romantic fantasy, a captivating biopic, and an action-packed thriller with a surprising lead actor.

Zendaya in Euphoria season 3

While HBO Max is set to premiere several exciting films and series this April 2026, one show stands out above the rest — Euphoria. Sam Levinson’s acclaimed drama returns for its third and potentially final season, featuring the original cast including Zendaya, Jacob Elordi, Sydney Sweeney, Hunter Schafer, along with some fresh faces.

‘Practical Magic’ (1998)

There’s a sequel to Practical Magic coming to theaters this fall, but the original film still has a lot of charm nearly three decades after its release. Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman play sisters Sally and Gillian Owens, both of whom are descended from a long line of witches with magical powers of their own. Sally has forsworn her magic following the death of her husband due to a family curse, while Gillian left town years ago to chase a love that the sisters were never supposed to have.

When Gillian finally comes home, it’s because her former lover, James “Jimmy” Angelov (Goran Višnjic), turns out to be dangerously violent. Not even death can slow down Jimmy’s malevolence, and he means to destroy both Gillian and Sally. To protect themselves and their family, both sisters will need to embrace their powers and exorcise the demons and heartbreak of their past.

‘Pride’ (2007)

Pride takes its inspiration from the true story of Jim Ellis (Terrence Howard), a coach in the ’70s who finds it difficult to land work despite a stellar educational background. With few other options, Ellis finds himself working at a rundown recreational center in Philadelphia and feuding with the janitor, Elston Johnson (Bernie Mac), who already works there.

Jessie Buckley in Men

Unlike some of the other streamers, the bulk of HBO Max‘s new movies in March tend to be older titles. Thankfully, there are some interesting and quirky films to choose from, especially if you happened to miss them in theaters. The Watch With Us team has selected the following three underrated HBO Max movies you […]

Ellis and Johnson eventually find some common ground and begin restoring the rec center into a more respectable state. More importantly, Ellis seizes the opportunity to help a group of local Black teenagers transform themselves into competitive swimmers, which was his sport back in college. The kids he mentors demonstrate real potential for expanding their swimming skills, but it takes more than just a pool to make a championship team. And Ellis can’t lead these kids to glory by himself, especially when it’s their own athletic prowess that will determine how far they go.

‘Dead of Winter’ (2025)

Is Emma Thompson the next Hollywood star to get a late shift into an action career like Liam Neeson? It’s too soon to say whether Thompson’s action thriller Dead of Winter is a one-off or the shape of things to come for her. She plays Barb, a grieving widow who just wants to spread her late husband’s ashes so she can say goodbye. Before that can happen, Barb witnesses a young woman, Leah (Laurel Marsden), who is held captive by an unnamed couple played by Judy Greer and Marc Menchaca.

Barb didn’t come looking for trouble, but she can’t abandon Leah to her fate at the hands of these maniacs. One-on-one, Barb probably wouldn’t be able to fight them either. But she is surprisingly crafty and resourceful, which gives Barb a chance to survive when the couple begins hunting her as their next trophy.

Revival of Productivity: Fire-Damaged Refinery Nears Full Capacity Restoration in Record Time

0

In brief

  • Output at the Viva Energy refinery is expected to ramp back up to over 90 per cent of capacity in the coming weeks.
  • The company has pledged a full investigation into the cause of the fire.

Australia’s energy landscape is poised for a rebound as one of its key refineries, recently impacted by a catastrophic fire, gears up to resume operations at near full capacity. The Geelong refinery, owned by Viva Energy, is set to revitalize its production lines in the coming weeks following the incident that temporarily halted its activities.

Viva Energy marked its return to the trading floor on Monday after an unexpected fire broke out last Wednesday, causing significant damage to parts of the refinery. The incident occurred in the alkylation unit within the facility’s gasoline complex, with initial investigations pointing to equipment failure as the cause.

In an official communication to the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX), Viva Energy expressed confidence in restoring the facility’s operational capabilities. “Over the next few weeks, and subject to plant inspection, the company expects to be in a position to … lift production of diesel, jet fuel, and petrol to over 90 percent of capacity,” the company stated.

This development promises to bring stability to the fuel supply chain, with the Geelong refinery playing a pivotal role in meeting domestic demand for essential fuels. As repairs and inspections proceed, Viva Energy remains focused on overcoming this setback and ensuring the refinery’s swift return to optimal function.

“Over the next few weeks, and subject to plant inspection, the company expects to be in a position to … lift production of diesel, jet fuel and petrol to over 90 per cent of capacity,” the statement said.

“The refinery is then expected to continue production at these levels until repairs are completed.”

The refinery was at a 60 per cent output for petrol following the fire and at 80 per cent for both jet fuel and diesel.

Viva has promised a full investigation into the cause of the incident.

The company had been in a trading halt following the fire, but resumed on Monday morning.

Viva shares dropped by as much as 9.5 per cent when it came out of the halt and were sitting at $2.38 before noon, down about six per cent.

The Geelong facility is one of only two refineries operating in Australia and provides 10 per cent of the country’s fuel supply and 50 per cent of Victoria’s.

Production had increased at the Geelong refinery amid the Middle East war and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, which had placed pressure on global oil supply.

Economic support for truckers

The conflict has put strain on trucking companies due to the rise in fuel costs.

From Monday, freight and trucking businesses were able to apply for interest-free loans to help weather the price hikes of doing business.

The loans were part of a $1 billion economic resilience program package and will apply to businesses that make or transport fuels, fertiliser and agricultural products.

The concessions were announced by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese during a speech at the National Press Club earlier in April.

Industry Minister Tim Ayres said the loans would provide stability during volatile economic times.

“Firms in supply chains that are facing escalating costs and short-term cash flow pressures have access to short-term zero-interest loans to make sure that they sustain their businesses through this short-term shock,” he told reporters in Canberra.

“The billion-dollar facility is there to be used as much as it is required.”

Loans of up to $5 million are available for companies with a turnover of less than $100 million.

Australian Banking Association chief executive Simon Birmingham said the financial sector would support the rollout of the loans.

“Banks are stepping up to support the rollout of these zero-interest loans to businesses who are doing it tough as a result of the current conflict in the Middle East,” he said.

“This will be important support for impacted businesses in areas such as freight and logistics, fuel, fertiliser and plastics manufacturing.”

Rehabilitation Royalty: The King’s Godson Reclaims £100M Fortune After Overcoming Addiction

0

Nicholas Knatchbull’s life story is a textbook example of squandered privilege.

Growing up alongside Princes William and Harry, Knatchbull was set to inherit one of England’s most prestigious titles, along with a Grade I-listed Palladian mansion surrounded by 620 acres of Hampshire countryside, and a fortune valued at £100 million.

As the godson of the King and great-grandson of Lord Louis Mountbatten—Prince Philip’s uncle, tragically killed by an IRA bombing—his lineage was illustrious.

However, instead of following the expected path of Eton and eventually assuming the title of the fourth Earl Mountbatten of Burma, Knatchbull veered dramatically off course, gaining infamy for his wild partying and intense use of recreational drugs.

He even embraced a rebellious image by shaving his head and getting tattoos.

So wayward was Knatchbull and so repeatedly did he mess up that his furious father finally cut him off completely and removed his name from his will – which saw Nicholas spend his twenties and early thirties in a series of dingy flats, drug dens and squats among some very unsavoury people.

Now however the Daily Mail can reveal a dramatic twist in the tale: the longtime addict, now 44, married with two children and 15 years’ sober, has recently moved back into his childhood home, the Broadlands Estate.

Nicholas Knatchbull was born into a life of privilege. Educated at Eton, he is King Charles's godson and the eldest son of Lord and Lady Brabourne

As heir, Nicholas would have inherited the Broadlands estate, a Grade I-listed Palladian stately home set in 620 acres of prime Hampshire farmland and a £100million fortune

And, most remarkably of all, he is even understood to have been restored to his status as heir to Broadlands.

One source close to the family said: ‘Even in a country with a long history of debauched and outrageous aristocrats, Nicholas Knatchbull was in a class of his own for scandal.

‘So his comeback to be restored to not just living here but being reinstated on the will is simply astonishing. He had been unmentionable here for two decades.’

Knatchbull had seemed destined from birth for the very highest reaches of British society.

He made childhood appearances on the balcony at Buckingham Palace and was assigned to show Prince William the ropes when he started at Eton.

His great-grandfather, the legendary Lord Louis Mountbatten, was the last Viceroy of India with whom King Charles shared such an exceptionally close bond that he referred to him as ‘Honorary Grandfather’.

His mother Penelope was a close friend and confidante of the late Queen and the carriage-racing partner of Prince Philip. She was the only one of his friends invited to his funeral due to coronavirus restrictions.

However, Nicholas's life took a dark turn when he became addicted to drugs and was disinherited by his furious father

However, Nicholas’s life took a dark turn when he became addicted to drugs and was disinherited by his furious father

And as a boy Nicholas enjoyed holidays with William, Harry and Princess Diana.

The world, it seemed, was young Nicholas’s oyster. But then he discovered drugs – and soon his life unraveled completely.

As a young man Nicholas, who then had the courtesy title of Baron Brabourne, was hopelessly addicted to heroin, cocaine and crack cocaine and also repeatedly consumed LSD, ketamine and cannabis.

The family tried everything to change his ways.

He underwent treatment twice for drug addiction at the renowned Cottonwood centre in Tucson, Arizona, and was also an inpatient at the Farm Place Clinic in Surrey and the Stepping Stones Addiction Centre in South Africa.

Nicholas, living in sordid squats in London and Southampton, was even at one point sectioned under the Mental Health Act for his own safety after he ‘disappeared’ from the Priory clinic where he was being treated for his addictions.

He was banished from Broadlands, the 60-room mansion in Romsey, Hampshire, where both the Queen and Philip and later Charles and Diana had spent parts of their respective honeymoons.

He was repeatedly threatened with disinheritance – and eventually the threat was carried out. It was expected that it would now be left to his sister, Lady Alexandra Hooper, the goddaughter of Princess Diana.

The journey back to the family fold would be a long one – one that has only finally concluded this year.

This road to redemption began with him finally getting off drugs.

Nicholas is now said to be 15 years clean of the Class As which had almost destroyed him, following those repeated stints in various rehab facilities which cost hundreds of thousands of pounds.

But his family remained wary of believing the change would last. There were abiding trust issues.

The next stage towards him being accepted again was him finally settling into a serious and sustained relationship.

Admittedly his choice of partner was not the conventional blue-blooded debutante type that might have been expected initially.

Instead Ambre Pouzet was an alternative cabaret performer from France who amusingly described herself as a ‘mer-lesque’ artiste – a joke around her somewhat raunchy turn which saw her dress as a mermaid under the stage name Saint-Clare.

There followed a two-and-a-half-year engagement.

And in May 2021 when they wed, the ceremony was – tellingly – held at Broadlands.

That wedding was quite different from Nicholas’s sister Alison’s 2016 nuptials, when she was walked down the aisle by the then Prince Charles and guests included the Queen and Prince Philip.

That held for Nicholas and Ambre, a civil ceremony, was much more low key. But nevertheless it signalled a further thawing for relations with his family.

And soon the couple were a family themselves: Ambre had a son, Alexander, in 2022

I know how the Queen REALLY felt about Meghan

Hi! I’m Richard Eden, Diary Editor and author of the Palace Confidential newsletter.

I have spent hours looking into what Meghan Markle’s relationship with the Queen was really like. And while I can tell you Meghan was welcomed with open arms, my sources have told me the Queen was very quickly concerned.

They were initially allowed to live in a cottage adjoining the estate boundary. Then, after having their first child, they then moved to a larger converted barn, which was also located just outside the estate’s boundary.

Nicholas was given gainful employment on the estate – as gardener, as if he were from the downstairs rather than upstairs classes.

He would be out in all weather, tending the various landscaped gardens, parks and pleasure grounds which are surrounded by wilder grasslands, woodlands and farmed land.

And last year Ambre had their second child, Endora, when the young family were finally allowed to move into Broadlands itself, the Daily Mail has learned.

A former neighbour near their barn home said this week: ‘The last time I saw Nicholas was about six months ago and he told us where he was going to be moving – into Broadlands.

‘It was quite a surprise given everything we knew – but it was true.

‘He’s now behind the main gate and the security fence so we never see him any more.’

Nicholas’s road to redemption had been a long and arduous one but becoming a father seems to have been instrumental to the reconciliation with his family.

A source said: ‘It was decided to bring Nicholas back into the family because he’s proved that he’s a changed man.

‘He’s now married, has two children and has settled down a lot. The family feel that he’s put his past behind him and that the time is right for all of them to move on.

‘He’s living back in the main house with his family. Nicholas has gone through a lot and it’s good to see that he’s got his life back on track. We are all happy for him.’

Another source at Broadlands said: ‘We were recently told that he is now going to inherit the title of Earl Mountbatten and the estate after all.

‘His mother particularly wanted him back and he’s helping her a lot because she had been running the estate more or less on her own and it’s not been easy for her.

‘Nicholas has proved that he’s not the person that he was and it’s wonderful to see him living back at the main house at Broadlands where he belongs.

‘But it’s an amazing turnaround. He’s gone from being a hopeless drug addict to potentially the head of a historic family once again.’

Nicholas’s parents, Lord and Lady Mountbatten, 78 and 73 respectively, have been separated since 2010 when the then-Lord Romsey left the marital home to live in the Bahamas with a new partner, the vivacious fashion designer Lady Nuttall.

That relationship however didn’t endure and just a year later he returned to England – initially not to the main house but a smaller property on the estate. He was eventually permitted to move back into the Broadlands main house.

Lord Mountbatten is understood to have suffered a prolonged period of ill health which has further intensified the demands on Lady Mountbatten around running the estate – again a reason why Nicholas’s return has been so appreciated.

And their happiness over his rehabilitation is a welcome upturn in fortunes for a family which has had its share of tragedies.

Nicholas’s youngest sister Leonora died from kidney cancer in 1991 aged just five – when he was ten.

Her diagnosis came while the Knatchbulls were on holiday with the then-Prince Charles and Princess Diana.

Lady Mountbatten said following Leonora’s death: ‘My faith was tried at one stage – but it is stronger now. I accepted her death intellectually, but my heart didn’t.’

The family also had to endure the notorious murder of the first Lord Mountbatten at the hands of the IRA in 1979 in which Norton’s brother was also killed.

Despite now helping to run the Broadlands estate and returning to his place within the family, Nicholas continues to have alternative interests which may seem incongruous for the aristocracy.

He uses the names 5D Nick, Deep N Beeper and Onepacman for making a range of electronic music.

He hosts a podcast called ‘Beeping Deeply’ which states that it is designed to showcase his ‘music nerd level knowledge across multiple genres’.

Nicholas’s social media is filled with videos of him in the studio making music and one even has a picture of his godfather, King Charles behind the decks wearing headphones and sunglasses.

He has also released two sci-fi novels and sells and makes digital art.

Our source said: ‘He’s a very down to earth man, easy to talk to and you’d never guess that he was an aristocrat and so well connected.’

Some of those connections are being reestablished, it seems.

THE TANGLED WEB OF THE KNATCHBULLS: CONFIDANTES AND COMPANIONS OF ROYALTY

Prince Charles has had a close relationship with the Knatchbull family ever since childhood.

He was famously devoted to the first Earl Mountbatten – Alexandra’s great-grandfather – Louis, who had hoped that the Prince would marry his granddaughter Amanda.

The Prince referred to Lord Mountbatten as his Honorary Grandfather, and consulted him on matters both of state and of the heart.

Their close relationship was depicted in the hit Netflix series The Crown, where Lord Mountbatten was portrayed by Greg Wise (seasons 1 and 2) and Charles Dance (seasons 3 and 4).

When Lord Mountbatten was killed along with his grandson Nicholas by IRA terrorists in 1979, Charles was heartbroken and he read the lesson at his funeral.

Louis Mountbatten’s grandson is Norton Knatchbull, Alexandra’s father.

Norton, known as Lord Brabourne, and his wife Penelope – herself the carriage-racing partner of Prince Philip – had three children: Alexandra, her brother Nicholas, and a sister, Leonora, who died tragically of kidney cancer when she was just five years old.

Lord Brabourne walked out on his 31-year marriage to be with Jeannie Nuttall, but later returned the family home Broadlands.

However, the couple are still estranged, and relations between Lord Brabourne and Alexandra are said to be strained.

He did not give away his first-born daughter at her wedding in 2016 as he was too ill to perform the necessary duties.

It is unknown if the family attended Nicholas’s wedding in May.

The wedding is likely to have been quite different from Nicholas's sister Alexandra's 2016 nuptials, where she was walked down the aisle by Prince Charles and guests included the Queen and Prince Philip

Television broadcasts showed news updates from the Japan Meteorological Agency, which predicted possible tsunami waves reaching up to 3 meters (approximately 9.84 feet) along vast stretches of northern Japan’s coastline following the earthquake. This information was relayed from Tokyo on April 20, 2026, as reported by REUTERS/Issei Kato.

At Kuji port in Iwate Prefecture, authorities recorded a tsunami wave height of about 2.6 feet. Another nearby port in the prefecture reported waves of around 1.3 feet, according to the agency’s data.

The agency further warned that tsunami waves could potentially reach up to 10 feet in height, posing a significant threat to the region.

Urgent Tsunami Warning Issued After Powerful 7.4-Magnitude Earthquake Hits Off Japan’s Coast

A powerful earthquake has struck off the northern Japanese coast, and the Japan Meteorological Agency has issued a tsunami alert in the region.

A powerful earthquake, initially measured at a magnitude of 7.4, struck off the coast of Sanriku in northern Japan at approximately 4:53 p.m. local time (5:53 p.m. AEST). The tremor originated about 10 kilometers beneath the ocean surface, according to reports from the meteorological agency.

In response to the seismic event, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has called for immediate evacuation of residents in the affected regions. As reported by CNN, Takaichi announced that the government has swiftly established an emergency task force to address the situation.

“Residents in areas under tsunami warnings should quickly move to higher ground or designated safe zones like evacuation buildings,” Takaichi advised during a press briefing on Monday, as covered by the national broadcaster NHK.

The authorities are currently prioritizing damage assessment, deploying emergency response measures, including search and rescue operations, and ensuring the public receives accurate and prompt updates, Takaichi stated.

“While we are in the process of confirming the full scope of human and material damage, we expect detailed reports soon and will continue with our disaster response efforts,” she added.

A CNN producer on the ground in Tokyo reported feeling the building they were in shake for about seven minutes.

The operator of the bullet train service that runs between Tokyo and Shin-Aomori station said the train had been suspended due to a power outage caused by the earthquake, NHK reported.

A tsunami of about 80 centimetres was detected at the Kuji port in the Iwate prefecture, and a smaller tsunami of 40 centimetres was recorded at another port in the prefecture, the agency said.

A tsunami of up to 3 metres could hit the area, the agency said. In addition to the tsunami alert in Iwate and Aomori to the north and south-eastern Hokkaido, the agency also issued a milder tsunami advisory for the coasts of Miyagi and Fukushima, south of the epicentre.

Another powerful 7.5 magnitude quake in December left dozens injured.

It’s 15 years since a magnitude 9 earthquake and tsunami on March 11, 2011, ravaged parts of northern Japan, caused more than 22,000 deaths and forced nearly half a million people to flee their homes, most of them due to tsunami damage.

Some 160,000 people fled their homes in Fukushima because of the radiation spewed from the tsunami-hit Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. About 26,000 of them haven’t returned because they resettled elsewhere, their hometowns remain off-limits or they have lingering concerns about radiation.

Revealed: The Untold Reason Behind the Disappearing Duchess’s Retreat, According to Her Cousin

Fergie’s retreat from the public eye has been a deliberate move to shield her family, particularly her children, from the lingering shadows of the Epstein scandal, according to a close family member.

The former Duchess of York recently surfaced at a luxurious wellness retreat in Austria, marking her first public appearance in months. This sighting comes after an extended period of seclusion following her presence at her youngest granddaughter’s christening, an occasion shortly before new details emerged linking her more closely to the disgraced financier.

Her withdrawal from the public sphere has been a topic of intrigue, with many speculating about the reasons behind her secrecy. Now, a family member who has maintained contact with her during this self-imposed exile has shed light on her motives.

Martin Barrantes, a relative, disclosed to the Daily Mail that Fergie’s efforts to remain out of sight are part of a strategy to protect her daughters, Beatrice and Eugenie, along with their young families, from the intense media scrutiny that surrounds the scandal.

The relative, Martin Barrantes, has revealed to the Daily Mail that she is intent on eluding the media and the wider public as a way of protecting her daughters, Beatrice and Eugenie, and their children.

It is the first time anyone from the former duchess’ family has spoken publicly about her since the US authorities released documents further implicating Sarah and her ex-husband Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor in the Epstein scandal.

And Mr Barrantes also revealed that despite being widely believed to be more or less penniless, Fergie in fact is part owner of a vast ranch in Argentina – where she has extensive contacts and a deep emotional connection.

Mr Barrantes, a cousin by marriage, told us: ‘I have spoken to her [and] can tell you that she just wants to protect her children and her grandchildren.’

He was speaking after being asked why she had elected to disappear.

He went on: ‘We spoke around three months ago. I wanted to give her my support in a difficult moment for her with all that was going on with the Epstein Files.

‘Sarah is going through a difficult moment, and I wanted to send her our support, she is a valued member of our family.

‘Given the situation she seemed to be in good spirits.

And Mr Barrantes went on protectively: ‘What people need to remember is that the real villain in all this is Epstein.

‘Sarah was perhaps foolish to trust him and take such confidence from him, and I am sure she regrets that now.

‘I haven’t seen Sarah in person for four or five years now [but] Sarah, and her sister became much loved members of our family and of course we give her our support.’

Another member of the Argentinian branch of Fergie’s family, Martin’s younger brother Raphael, also expressed his support for her to the Daily Mail.

His brother Raphael Barrantes told the Daily Mail. ‘I’m sure Sarah regrets ever getting to know Epstein.

‘She was led on by him, but he was the criminal in all this, people have to remember that Sarah didn’t do anything wrong.’

And, reiterating Martin’s explanation for why she had been hiding out, Raphael added: ‘She loves her children more than anything and will do anything for them.’

Ferguson, 66, has had a close connection to Argentina since her teens and has been a regular visitor for decades.

Her link to the country began when her mother Susan caused a scandal by divorcing her first husband Major Ronald Ferguson and eloping there with the dashing Argentinian polo player Hector Barrantes.

Hector’s nephew Martin, who has known Fergie all his life, lives in Buenos Aires but also spends time at the isolated El Pucara, a 1000-acre ranch which is a six hour drive from the Argentine capital and 45 minutes away from the nearest town, Tres Lomas, where Hector and Susan lived.

On the edge of the Pampas, Argentina’s famous fertile grasslands, it is an idyllic spot with miles of flat countryside devoted to crop farming, cattle ranching or stud ranches for polo horses and reachable only by driving miles along dusty unsurfaced trails.

And it has now emerged that El Pucara is jointly owned by Martin and Fergie – and although she has not visited for more than 15 years, she still keeps in regular contact with him, not least because the ranch is where her mother is buried.

Sarah’s last visit to Argentina, Martin told us, was in 2011, when she was accompanied by a team from Hello! Magazine.

She was pictured kneeling at the simple wooden cross which marks the final resting place of her mother, who is buried alongside Hector Barrantes, her stepfather and Martin’s uncle.

Martin, who also runs a biotech firm in Buenos Aires and is still involved in the polo circuit, told the Daily Mail that Sarah still part owned El Pucara.

And although some of the surrounding land has more recently been sold off, the plot where Susan and Hector are buried is still part of the estate.

Susan’s decision to split from her husband – who was a polo playing friend of the late Prince Philip and manager of a younger King Charles – caused a huge social scandal in 1973.

At the time, Fergie was just 12 years old and, in an interview more than 25 years ago, she said her mother’s decision to move abroad to Argentina led to her developing an eating disorder.

Fergie later told how she had blamed herself for being abandoned by her mother and turned to binge eating for comfort.

She told The Observer: ‘She [Susan] was my spirit. My whole soul and she went. I believed it was my fault – of course I did.

‘She hardly contacted me at all and that’s when food became my only friend.’

For years, royal watchers noted similarities between the early life of Fergie and the late Princess of Wales, who was also separated from her mother when she was a small child and the two formed a strong bond when they married into the Windsors.

Susan and Hector became a high society couple in Argentina and were well known for their glamorous parties. Each year when the polo season finished in South America they would travel to Europe for the summer.

They were primarily there to see Sarah and her sister Jane, but they also took the opportunity to scout out new polo horses.

But the Falklands War in 1982 put an end to their travels for several years, as Argentine players were banned from the UK.

Susan’s connections with the Royal Family had begun as far back as 1954, when she was presented as a debutante to the late Queen Elizabeth, and 22 years later it culminated in her riding in an open carriage with the Duke of Edinburgh for her daughter’s wedding to Andrew.

When Fergie married Andrew in July 1986, the Falklands conflict was still fresh in public memory, and this, coupled with the fact Andrew had fought in the war, meant there was some uncertainty over whether Hector – who himself had enlisted in the Argentine army – would be invited.

But he was – even if he diplomatically elected not to join Susan on the balcony of Buckingham Palace with the wider Royal Family.

Susan returned to Argentina soon after the wedding, but the day had proved to be the beginning of a rapprochement between her and the daughter she had abandoned.

This bond was further strengthened in 1990 when Hector fell gravely ill with cancer of the lymph glands.

Fergie dropped everything and took her then young family, Beatrice, two, and four-months old Eugenie, to Argentina to support her mother, as she spent the final hours with her husband.

Hector, just 51, died just 24 hours after the Yorks flew back to London following a ten-day visit to El Pucara.

At the time the Queen – who had danced with Hector at summer parties during Royal Ascot – sent her condolences.

And Fergie travelled back to Argentina with Andrew, her then husband, for the funeral and burial in the grounds of El Pucara.

Three years ago, in a podcast Sarah – who has herself battled back from breast cancer – spoke of her fight with the disease and recalled how it had previously claimed her stepfather Hector’s life, adding that she had ‘adored him’ and describing him as a ‘wonderful man’.

Widowed Susan continued to live in El Pucara and although some of the land was sold off, it remained in her hands until her tragic death from a horrendous car crash in September 1998 – the same fate that had met Hector’s first wife.

Driving back from friends late one night in a Rover 400 with Martin’s younger brother Raphael, then 25, the car collided at high speed with a Renault truck.

Incredibly, Raphael escaped with minor injuries as did the occupants of the other vehicle. But Susan was killed instantly.

Later reports implied that the crash may have been the fault of Fergie’s mum, amid suggestions that she routinely enjoyed driving at high speed, wasn’t wearing a seat belt and a year earlier had been involved in another potentially deadly smash in which her car had rolled over seven times.

Fergie was on holiday in Italy at the time of the crash, with her Italian friend Count Gaddo della Gherardesca, and immediately flew to Argentina where she met her sister Jane who had arrived from Australia.

Again, the Queen – who was in Malaysia for the Commonwealth Games – sent her condolences and said she was ‘shocked’ and ‘saddened’ by the death – and Fergie was pictured arriving at a small airfield and being embraced by workers from El Pucara.

Despite initial reports Susan’s body would be flown back to England, the funeral took place less than a week later and she was buried next to her second husband on the edge of a polo field – after councillors in Tres Lomas again granted special permission as they had for Hector.

A year before she died, Susan had written a book about her passion for polo called The Sport of Kings, and so in favour was she with the Royal Family that the then Prince of Wales wrote the foreword.

A year before she died, she had also attended the funeral of the late Princess of Wales – which brought her and Fergie even closer together, with Susan increasing the regularity of her trips to the UK and her daughter reciprocating by visiting El Pucara.

They would speak two or three times a week by telephone, with Sarah always keen to know how her mother was doing, and a month before she died Susan had spent the summer in France on holiday with her daughter.

Intriguingly, Sarah’s connections to Argentina and El Pucara also emerge in the Epstein Files – with the first mention in 2007 in an email to the disgraced financier from a woman called Fiona Turney.

Turney, a Briton who now lives in Australia who has connections to the polo scene, had emailed Epstein to ask for work possibilities.

In her CV she described how she had been ‘PA on a project in Argentina for the Duchess of York’.

She added: ‘Initially I was sent to Argentina by DOY [Fergie] to assist in bringing to a conclusion the ongoing legal problems surrounding her deceased mother’s estate.

‘This has recently been resolved, and DOY is now owner of the property. I have produced financial and redevelopment plans for the property, which is situated 600km from Buenos Aries.’

Epstein’s reply is not known, and attempts have been made to contact Turney.

Then in 2010, at the height of Fergie’s financial troubles, her former husband sent an email to Abu Dhabi based financier Terence Allen, in which he asked for help with ‘Sarah’s plight’.

Without naming the creditors, the former Duke of York describes conspiratorially how they ‘have the farm in Argentina and the jewellery as collateral and are not going anywhere with either’.

Mr Allen replies saying: ‘With S – I want to help – sincerely. I am barely acquainted with either of you, so a little lost at what to suggest.

‘Financially I can help. But it seems more meaningful if we find a worthwhile business role within her capabilities.

‘Will you allow me to find something? I don’t want to intrude if you prefer to handle this with the “family” so to speak.’

A year before she died, Susan (pictured) wrote a book about polo called The Sport of Kings, and so in favour was she with the Royal Family that the then Prince of Wales wrote the foreword

A year before she died, Susan (pictured) wrote a book about polo called The Sport of Kings, and so in favour was she with the Royal Family that the then Prince of Wales wrote the foreword

But perhaps the most intriguing is an email Epstein wrote to an undisclosed recipient in June 2014 that read: ‘Fergie, helped lent money, mother Argentina rehab.’

It is well known that Epstein bankrolled Fergie with cash and flights – and that she was only too happy to accept, perhaps over-playing her enthusiasm and now bitterly regretting one email describing him as a ‘supreme friend’ urging him to ‘Marry me!’

With all these connections it is no surprise that Fergie, even in hiding, has been keeping in touch with Martin.

Her family in Argentina hope that her current troubles soon recede so that not only is she able to resume some form of public life, but to make more return visits to this place that she loves and also part owns.
