The 5 Best The Office Episodes That Don’t Feature Michael Scott

0

For many fans of “The Office,” the series has a clear before-and-after divide: Michael Scott’s (Steve Carell) tenure as the driving force of the comedy and the era that followed his exit. Once Michael left, the Scranton branch lost a chaotic presence that was nearly impossible to replace. The show continued, but something undeniably changed.

Michael’s painfully awkward behavior was only one of the show’s defining elements. “The Office” also built much of its early appeal around Jim (John Krasinski) and Pam’s (Jenna Fischer) long-running will-they-or-won’t-they romance. By the time the couple married and started a family, that central storyline had reached its natural conclusion. Michael’s Season 7 farewell, “Goodbye Michael,” made the series feel as if it had delivered its final major statement — yet it carried on for two additional seasons.

Of course, “The Office” produced both triumphs and misfires throughout its entire run. Michael appeared in plenty of weaker episodes, but the show’s shortcomings became more noticeable after his departure. Some viewers may choose to stop watching at that point, though the remaining seasons still contain several genuine highlights. In fact, a handful of excellent episodes prove that “The Office” could succeed without Michael Scott. The problem was that not every post-Michael story made equally good use of the ensemble.

Dwight K. Schrute, (Acting) Manager (Season 7, Episode 24)

With Michael gone, Dunder-Mifflin’s Scranton office needed a new manager. After years of anticipation, Dwight (Rainn Wilson) finally takes the job — and wastes no time transforming into a near-dictatorial boss in one of the character’s strongest episodes. His reign takes an unexpected turn when he accidentally fires a gun beside Andy’s (Ed Helms) ear, prompting the staff to blackmail him in exchange for keeping quiet.

The episode succeeds because it changes the workplace dynamic without losing sight of who these characters are. Watching Dwight become intoxicated by authority is hilarious, but the story wisely pivots before his power trip grows repetitive. Once Dwight finds himself under pressure and forced to defend his position, the premise gains a fresh second act.

The episode also sneaks in some sharp commentary about workplace hierarchy. Without a manager constantly interfering, Dunder-Mifflin operates surprisingly well: Employees arrive, complete their jobs, and go home. It might have been interesting to see the series explore a manager-free office for longer, especially since that approach could have created more room for supporting characters. Still, the show seemed to understand that Dwight’s leadership would quickly become exhausting, so he relinquishes the position after a single episode.

The List (Season 8, Episode 1)

Season 7 concludes with a star-studded search for Michael’s successor, eventually introducing Robert California (James Spader) as Dunder-Mifflin’s new force of authority. He could not be more different from Michael. Michael craved approval and routinely embarrassed himself trying to win people over; Robert is composed, intimidating, and carries an unsettling hint of sociopathy.

Not every later episode knew what to do with Robert California, and viewers remain divided over the character. Still, “The List” provides an effective showcase for his appeal. Robert maintains a mysterious document that places employees into two columns, repeatedly shifting their names and sending the office into a panic. The confusion continues until he finally explains that the list separates the “winners” from the “losers.”

Robert is intentionally strange, which helps explain why some fans rank him among the show’s worst bosses. But “The List” demonstrates the best way to use him: Let the other characters attempt to decode his behavior while the story remains centered on the ensemble. The series deserves credit for taking a bold turn with California instead of settling for another Michael clone like Deangelo Vickers (Will Ferrell). Although much of Season 8 struggled to find its footing, the premiere offered a promising and distinctive start.

Tallahassee (Season 8, Episode 15)

After Michael’s departure, the series needed to disrupt its familiar routines, and Season 8 does that with a storyline that sends several employees to Florida for a special project. The new setting opens up different character combinations while preserving some classic office humor. Jim, for example, still finds time to torment Dwight by staging a murder in his hotel room and leaving behind evidence designed to make Dwight look guilty.

Even after suffering appendicitis, Dwight refuses to slow down in Florida because he wants to prove to Nellie Bertram (Catherine Tate) that he is qualified to be her vice president. Meanwhile, Andy takes over receptionist duties in Pennsylvania and discovers that he genuinely enjoys the role. This is where the post-Michael version of “The Office” works best: It introduces unusual situations without abandoning the character relationships that made the show popular. Whether Dwight is in Scranton or Florida, he remains determined to outperform everyone around him, regardless of the consequences.

“Tallahassee” also earns its place by introducing one of Season 8’s most memorable variations: Florida Stanley (Leslie David Baker). Stanley is usually defined by his gruff, disengaged attitude, but away from the office, he appears to be having the time of his life. Florida feels like a vacation from both Dunder-Mifflin and his family, revealing a surprisingly carefree side of the character. It’s one of the season’s best jokes — and a version of Stanley viewers wish the show had explored more often.

Work Bus (Season 9, Episode 4)

By Season 9, “The Office” was clearly approaching the end of its run, but episodes such as “Work Bus” showed that the series could still deliver its old spark. Jim tricks Dwight into evacuating the office so he can take Pam on a much-needed outing, especially as his part-time job in Philadelphia begins putting strain on their relationship. Dwight, however, responds by renting a bus and moving the entire workplace onto the road instead of allowing everyone to take the day off.

Season 9 places considerable pressure on Jim and Pam, with Jim’s new job creating distance and conflict between them. In “Work Bus,” though, Jim’s intentions are sincere: He wants to take Pam out for pie. The episode’s quieter tone feels welcome amid the season’s heavier relationship drama. It also delivers plenty of memorable comedy, including Kevin’s (Brian Baumgartner) revelation that he can solve complicated math problems only when pie is part of the equation. Creed (Creed Bratton) also attempts to escape work, only to wind up on the very bus Dwight has rented.

One detail many viewers may have missed is that the episode was directed by Bryan Cranston, best known for starring in “Breaking Bad.” Cranston demonstrates a strong visual sense, steadily increasing the tension as the cramped bus becomes unbearable for the employees. Given his experience filming inside an RV, working within the confines of a bus may have felt almost familiar.

A.A.R.M. (Season 9, Episodes 22 and 23)

Michael Scott would return in “The Office” finale for Dwight’s wedding, but fans were treated to a mini-finale before the proper one with the two-parter “A.A.R.M.” It’s here where we see many plot threads start getting wrapped up, like Dwight learning he’s the biological father of Angela’s (Angela Kinsey) child. Plus, “A.A.R.M.” sees Jim finally give Pam the teapot he intended to give her in the Season 2 episode “Christmas Party,” along with the note that was supposed to be inside. It’s a beautiful payoff and a good way to get things back on track for a great finale.

Season 9 mostly saw Jim and Pam’s relationship in a state of flux after Jim pursued a new career. It really seemed like “The Office” may have been planning to break this couple up. But “A.A.R.M.” reaffirms their love toward one another. We saw them flirt with one another, get together, get married, have children, venture into rocky territory, but realize there’s no one else the two of them would rather be with.

The final two seasons of “The Office” are tough. No one would blame most viewers for simply ignoring them and simply skipping to the finale. But these are characters we love, and they should be allowed to have a bad day every now and then. There are still good episodes of “The Office” without Michael Scott that show he was never the only thing about the sitcom that worked. The real power was the combined efforts of everyone involved.

Ruby Rose Breaks Down Over Best Friend Hayden Panettiere’s Death

Ruby Rose became emotional as she paid tribute to her “best friend,” Hayden Panettiere, following the American actress’s death at the age of 36.

The 40-year-old Australian actor spoke with Entertainment Tonight about her deep friendship with the Heroes star before attending Panettiere’s celebration of life at Malibu Pacific Church on Saturday.

Fighting back tears, Rose struggled to speak about her loss. “I don’t know if I can… sorry, no one’s asked yet,” she told reporters. “That was my best friend. We spoke every day for five years. I never even imagined we would become friends.”

Rose said she had initially been wary of forming friendships with other celebrities after having difficult experiences in the entertainment business. “I didn’t know if I wanted to have any celebrity friends,” she explained. “Then I saw her, she saw me, and I remember thinking, ‘Oh, no.’”

She recalled that Panettiere approached her despite her hesitation and introduced herself.

“She ran up anyway and said, ‘Hey, I’m Hayden. Can we go somewhere and talk? We’ve got a lot in common,’” the John Wick: Chapter 2 star remembered. “I just laughed and thought, ‘What?’”

Panettiere later told Rose that she had responded, “I don’t think so,” although Rose believes she simply laughed. The pair soon began talking and discovered how much they had in common.

Rose warmly reflected on the five-year friendship they built, during which they texted each other daily and regularly made sure the other was doing well.

“It’s a bigger group now. There are 14 of us that we’ve gathered over the years. That’s my family. I don’t have a real family, so,” Rose said.

She added that Panettiere’s greatest wish had been to tell her own story in her own words and on her own terms.

Rose attended the memorial alongside Paris Hilton, Evan Ross, Jonathan Jackson and Lennon Stella.

According to TMZ, Panettiere’s former Nashville co-stars Connie Britton and Charles Esten were also among those who attended the celebration of life.

A source told the publication that the gathering was both “emotional and beautiful,” beginning with the release of doves outside the church.

Roughly 150 mourners then went inside, where a band had been arranged and Britton and Esten delivered tributes.

Esten also performed a song from Nashville, the television series in which he and Panettiere appeared together.

Panettiere’s father, Skip, was reportedly present, while her mother, Leslie Vogel, from whom the actress had been estranged, did not attend.

A close source to Vogel denied that she was invited but told TMZ she couldn’t attend due to a family emergency.

Amid the star’s death, Brian is said to be spiraling and has reportedly lost 40 pounds since Hayden died.

Last month, detectives confirmed to the Daily Mail that they responded to a 911 call from an ‘acquaintance’ of Hayden, who described her as ‘unresponsive.’

Narcan, a nasal spray used to reverse the effects of an opioid overdose, was found on a mattress in the loft apartment where the actress was staying, TMZ previously reported.

Cindy Crawford Understands the Pain Daughter Kaia Gerber Is Going Through

0

Few people have been photographed as often as Cindy Crawford, one of the defining figures of the supermodel era.

On the catwalk and across the covers of magazines including Vogue, she has long possessed an effortless ability to command attention.

That made the advertising campaign she appeared in last spring all the more poignant. Crawford was photographed alongside her husband, Rande Gerber, and their children, Kaia and Presley.

The family was promoting an American activewear brand, smiling in the sunshine and laughing as they played together on the beach.

What made the images so affecting was seeing Crawford not as the celebrated supermodel, but as a proud mother quietly supporting what may be her greatest achievements: her children.

In an accompanying YouTube film, Crawford embraces her model daughter Kaia, who bears a striking resemblance to her, with the Pacific Ocean glistening behind them.

For Cindy Crawford, who celebrated her milestone 60th birthday this year, the loss of her son Presley echoes that suffered by her own mother Jennifer, 50 years earlier

The film also shows her resting her head against her son Presley’s. His sharply defined features made him instantly recognisable as her firstborn.

Now, that intimate portrait of a close family unafraid to express its love has become a deeply painful reminder of a life cut tragically short.

Presley Gerber, 27, followed his mother into modelling. In recent years, however, he had spoken publicly about his struggles with mental health and substance abuse. He died on Sunday in Los Angeles.

He had entered a rehabilitation centre only hours earlier. His cause of death has yet to be determined, although a drugs overdose is strongly suspected.

The loss will leave his mother, father and younger sister, 25, facing unimaginable grief. His sister’s name was tattooed on his left arm.

For Crawford, who turned 60 this year, the death of her son recalls the devastating loss suffered by her own mother, Jennifer, half a century earlier.

Crawford grew up in Illinois as the middle of three sisters. She was only ten when her younger brother, Jeffrey, died from leukaemia at the age of four after being ill for two years.

A family friend told the Daily Mail this week: ‘Cindy has never fully got over her only brother’s death. She talks about it and it still haunts her.’

In a 2024 podcast appearance, the model discussed the loss and the survivor’s guilt she carried, especially because she and her sisters understood how deeply their father, John, had wanted a son.

Crawford has spoken about her loss and the survivor’s guilt she felt, knowing how much her father, John, had longed for a son. She is pictured with husband Rande Gerber and Presley.

Poignantly, she also spoke of how the birth of her own children had shaped her perspective of that loss (Kaia and Presley are pictured during their childhood)

She also poignantly explained how becoming a mother herself changed her perspective on that earlier loss. Kaia and Presley are pictured during their childhood.

Now Cindy faces the enormity of a loss she never wanted to imagine but must, surely, have feared during the turbulent journey her adored son had endured in recent years

Poignantly, she also spoke of how the birth of her own children had shaped her perspective of that loss.

‘When I had my first kid [Presley], I called my mom, and I was like: ”How did you survive?” she said. ‘Because you can’t imagine losing a child until you have a child, and even then, you don’t want to imagine it.

‘I remember her saying: ‘Well, I had three other kids looking at me to lead them through this.’

‘I think that because of us, she got out of bed and just did what she had to do.’

Now Cindy faces the enormity of a loss she never wanted to imagine but must, surely, have feared during the turbulent journey her adored son – the little boy who would cry when hair and make-up artists arrived at home ‘because he knew it meant mommy was leaving for work’ – had endured in recent years.

She also faces comforting her daughter in a grief so familiar.

They are all broken, but Kaia is, we are told, her pressing concern.

‘Suddenly she’s an only child,’ says the family friend. ‘She’s lost her brother who she loved so much.

‘While Kaia has lots of friends and a boyfriend who is there for her, Cindy is deeply worried how Presley’s death will affect her in the long run.

‘She believes from her own experience that it will stay with her for life. How could it not?’

Presley, or Prez as he was known, was born in 1999, a year after Cindy’s marriage to Rande, 64, who along with family friend George Clooney is the co-founder of tequila brand Casamigos.

Presley was a young athlete, spending hours in the water ¿ school surf team, water polo, swim squad. 'The strongest addiction I ever had was surfing and being in the ocean,' he once said

As Cindy wrote in her autobiography Becoming: ‘There was never any doubt in my mind that I wanted to have children.

‘It didn’t happen right away though. Finally, after several months, I got the smiley face on the stick. We were overjoyed.’

She had Presley at home.

‘I woke up at 2am on the morning of July 2 and 17 hours later I was in bed with my husband and my new baby boy. Pure bliss.

‘Presley Walker Gerber entered our world that day and I became a mother. It was the hardest, most challenging thing I’ve done. It was also the most rewarding.’

Two years later Kaia arrived.

‘Becoming a parent and learning to love a child are probably the most selfless things a person can do,’ Cindy added. ‘I hope that I can for ever be a source of unconditional love to my children – just like my mom was for me.’

There were, she admitted, times she missed events, but she strove to be a present mum.

Presley was a young athlete, spending hours in the water – school surf team, water polo, swim squad. ‘The strongest addiction I ever had was surfing and being in the ocean,’ he once said.

But the seeds of a lifelong battle with his mental health were sown early. By the time he was signed, aged 15, by IMG models (his sister, then 13, was signed at the same time), he was already taking the antidepressant Prozac.

Diagnosed at the time with both attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder – Presley would later say diagnoses were thrown around ‘like candy’ – the progression into drug dependence began.

Drugs to suppress, drugs to stimulate, drugs to help him sleep, for anxiety, for depression. On and on it went.

There was a whirl of global travel. He walked the catwalk for Italian label Moschino aged 16, appeared in a Calvin Klein campaign with Kaia, graced the cover of GQ. It was glossy and exciting.

‘I remember within the first week of signing, I’m like in New York, people are taking pictures of me, shirt off. My whole life changed within a month,’ he later reflected. ‘I had to grow up quickly.’

But there was another side to it all.

In 2019 he was charged with driving under the influence and sentenced to three years’ probation. The following year he had the word ‘Misunderstood’ tattooed across his face.

‘It says misunderstood because that’s how I felt my entire life,’ he said in an interview. He later had it removed.

In the last three years, Presley had begun to share his experiences on Instagram, creating a series of video diaries entitled Mental Health Mondays in which he documented the drugs, the depression, rehabilitation and the more alternative and holistic therapies.

The videos are articulate, earnest and painfully frank. His Instagram profile reads ‘Be Kind’. Kaia reflected on her brother’s struggles and his confessional approach in an interview with Vogue, published just a month before his death.

‘When something like that happens in a family, it kind of levels everyone,’ she said. ‘I think that’s also why I started to self-identify as the easy one and never wanted to ask for help. Because it felt like too much to have two children who were needing.’

She reflected, too, on her brother’s willingness to share his experiences. ‘There’s only so much you can hide from the world,’ she said. ‘And trying to put a lid on something just makes the person feel like you’re ashamed of them.’

Presley’s posts, however, stopped late last year.

‘I had to step back and take care of my own mental health for a bit. But I’m coming back soon — stronger, clearer, more intentional than ever,’ he wrote in November.

And then, in March, he shared the news that he had been in Mexico, undergoing experimental treatment with Ibogaine, a psychedelic drug used to treat substance dependence, which is illegal in the US but legal in Mexico.

This week, the Daily Mail spoke exclusively to holistic healing coach Jessica Salter, from Long Island, who was at the Beyond clinic in Cancun at the same time as Presley, having also signed up for Ibogaine treatment.

Jessica says: ‘I went to the clinic because I wanted to work through some pain that I was carrying and Ibogaine piqued my interest.’

She doesn’t want to reveal too much of what she shared with Presley but says: ‘He was a very sweet person. He was very open about why he was there. Everybody liked him.’

They were part of a group of 15 to 20 guests who shared workshops, talked and ate together in the communal dining area. ¬Presley didn’t hide his identity.

Jessica said: ‘One of the most profound moments I had was to be with someone like Presley, with all his resources, and to be with someone else from a tiny little town, who had never travelled anywhere before and never really done anything.

‘They were both in the same place and both had things they needed help with.

‘It was just such a true illustration of the fact that there is no rhyme or reason to it [addiction]. Everybody deserves the same level of compassion and empathy. Everybody just wants to be free from pain.’

Jessica’s seven-hour experience with the psychedelic drug was ‘very intense’ but, she says, it helped her with the emotional issues she had been having.

She left the day Presley was due to have his ‘flood dose’ – the maximum amount of pure Ibogaine Hydrochloride (HCl) administered to a patient seeking to eliminate or interrupt addiction and stop withdrawal symptoms.

The knowledge of Presley’s death weighs heavy. ‘It’s just very, very sad,’ says Jessica. ‘Especially when you read about how much he struggled and how long he tried [to beat his addictions].

‘But he took some of the shame and stigma away from it by being so upfront and putting it out into the open. That was brave of him.’

As is often the way when a life lived under the spotlight is cut short, speculation has been rife this last week.

Presley was reportedly being prescribed ketamine by a doctor, despite his ongoing struggles.

Ketamine is the same drug that was listed as a contributing cause of Matthew Perry’s death in 2023.

What drugs may or may not have been in Presley’s system will become clearer as police and medical examiners complete their investigations.

How tragic that just a few months ago, in June, Presley glowed as he stood, arms around both parents, at a fundraiser in which he was participating in a candid panel discussion about mental health.

‘The most free I felt was when I was finally honest with myself,’ he told the audience.

That his parents were there, supportive as ever, was no surprise.

Celebrity photographer Katie Levine, who photographed Presley several times, tells the Daily Mail: ‘I’ve been sober for ten years and I was always cheering him on.

‘I felt like his parents and his sister were always there for him, giving him a lot of support. He was very proud of his roots.’

She remembers a young man full of promise.

‘He was outspoken and fun and not at all serious. I think he was the boy version of Cindy, super-handsome and the camera loved him.’

Will Beck, a financial planner from Utah, met Presley through business in 2021.

He remembers the pride Presley had in his sister, his admiration for his father (whose business success he was so keen to replicate), and the love of his family.

‘His mom was one of the greatest supermodels, but he grew up with fame and wasn’t impressed by it,’ he says, talking exclusively to the Daily Mail.

‘He just thought of her as his mom. I think they were a genuine, loving family.

‘There’d been multiple times I could see he was struggling, and I’d reach out to him and tell him a lot of people had his back.

‘It sucks that he had so many demons, but he said addiction was part of his life. He’d fall back into it, and his parents would try to help him. I know he wanted to beat it and just couldn’t.’

Back in LA, for the Gerbers there is heartache.

‘From the outside people thought Cindy had been living the perfect life,’ says the family friend. ‘It looked like she had it all. Money, fame, beauty and a solid marriage. But sadly there was a great deal of heartache behind it.

‘Like the loss of Cindy’s brother, the one consolation the family has is that Presley is no longer suffering. However, what he’s left behind is a heartbroken family who will never be able to fully heal. There will always be that one missing piece.’

Premier League’s 10 Most Expensive Summer Signings Rated

0

The transfer window closed this week after Premier League clubs committed a record £3.49billion over the summer.

With the third weekend of the campaign now getting under way, Daily Mail Sport assesses the 10 most expensive transfers of the summer and asks which clubs have secured the best value for money…

10) Iliman Ndiaye – Everton to Manchester City, £65m – A

Ndiaye’s journey to the top has been extraordinary. Just three years ago, he was playing for Sheffield United; now he is preparing to join Maresca’s revamped Manchester City side.

On the evidence so far, this appears to be City’s strongest piece of business. A proven Premier League performer, Ndiaye is only 26 and can operate across almost the entire front line. At £65million, that represents excellent value.

His close control, awareness and experience should make him an ideal partner for Erling Haaland, while his ability to create chances will give the striker a steady supply of service. Ndiaye is also a threat in his own right, particularly when he is given the freedom to express himself.

There is always a risk that an expensive transfer may not work out, but everything about this move suggests Ndiaye is unlikely to prove a costly mistake.

City’s confidence in the winger was clear when he was handed an immediate place in the starting XI against Coventry, with Phil Foden dropping out of Maresca’s team.

Ndiaye’s footwork, vision and experience should make him an ideal partner for Erling Haaland

9) Bruno Guimaraes – Newcastle to Arsenal, £75m – A*

This is the only signing on the list that appears to be close to flawless.

Reinforcing a squad that has just won the title is notoriously difficult. Clubs can under-invest, as Chelsea did in the summer of 2015, or spend heavily without seeing their new arrivals settle quickly, as Liverpool experienced last summer.

Arsenal, however, appear to have avoided both pitfalls. Their headline signing has made an outstanding impression, and when compared with the fees paid for the midfielders still to come, £75million looks like a superb deal. Guimaraes is a world-class 28-year-old operating at the peak of his career, and his ability to slot alongside Declan Rice could make him an ideal fit.

Considering the price of the midfielders still to come on this list, this is an excellent deal

8) Ayyoub Bouaddi – Lille to Manchester City, £81m – C

Bouaddi is the second Manchester City player featured here as part of the club’s £321million midfield overhaul.

Many supporters may not have been familiar with the Moroccan midfielder before the World Cup, but the tournament once again placed a previously emerging talent firmly in the spotlight.

Bouaddi’s performances during the summer attracted interest from several major European clubs, making City’s success in winning the race for his signature a significant coup.

The 18-year-old is a gifted midfielder whose composure and understanding appear far beyond his years. He is most comfortable as a deep-lying playmaker, although he can also push forward into the No 8 position — a combination that seems particularly well suited to Maresca’s system.

He looks capable of becoming the ideal young partner for Enzo Fernandez and Elliot Anderson in City’s new-look midfield. Even so, the transfer raises several questions, starting with the fee. For a young midfielder with relatively limited experience, £81million appears an extremely steep price.

Critics will also wonder if he can adapt to the physicality and pace of the Premier League coming directly from Ligue 1.

The teenager looks like being slowly introduced into the City side, having come off the bench in the closing stages of their last two matches.

7) Savio – Manchester City to Tottenham, £85m – D

The first signing on this list for the window’s second biggest spenders is potentially their weakest.

From all the available evidence this is an underwhelming signing for Spurs. Savio, or Savinho as he was known before his move, from three years ago would still have been worth no more than £60million, and yet two seasons later, and after scoring just two league goals, City have managed to sell the winger, 22, for double what they paid for him.

This may seem harsh, and it is true that the Brazilian could rediscover his form and have a great impact at Spurs. De Zerbi is a fan of touchline wingers with an ability to cut inside, as we saw with Mitoma and Minteh at Brighton. However, it is hard to argue that Savio is worth the money.

Savio sparkled off the bench on his debut against Championship side Charlton in the Carabao Cup last month, while De Zerbi acknowledged he was only fit enough for the first hour of their goalless draw with Nottingham Forest on Saturday.

6) Mateus Fernandes – West Ham to Tottenham for £85m – B

The next name on the list is a slightly better one for Tottenham than the previous. Multiple big clubs were in for this young Portuguese talent and so Spurs have done well to secure his services.

Fernandes presents much more upside to Tottenham than Savio and his new midfield partner Sandro Tonali (more on him shortly). The Portugal international is four years younger and up there with him in terms of quality.

Furthermore, compared to what young midfielders such as Elliot Anderson are going for this looks like a smart move. They have still paid over the odds for the 22-year-old but not by a ridiculous amount – and in beating the likes of Manchester United to the signing displayed the club’s ambition for the new season.

They haven’t started well but have plenty of time to turn it around and Fernandes could prove key to that.

5) Sandro Tonali – Newcastle to Tottenham for £100m – D+

Sandro Tonali is an excellent player but is he worth £100m? No chance. This is a player who despite his talent, has never really had a sustained period of form and was a major part of an extremely disappointing Newcastle side last year.

It is clear why De Zerbi would want Tonali, 26, at Tottenham for his first full season at the club as the midfielder is made for a system built on fast build-up and dynamic defensive midfielders.

But they’ve massively overpaid and piled more pressure on a risky buy, who – while it is early days – did not exactly look up to the task in Spurs’ opening games.

Tonali was spared a high-profile error against Nottingham Forest on Saturday, with Neco Williams’ goal ruled out for handball after the Italian had fluffed a clearance.

4) Elliot Anderson – Nottingham Forest to Manchester City for £116m – B

This transfer feels like a calculated risk made by the biggest spenders in the division this summer.

Elliot Anderson was one of the standout performers in the Premier League last season, which was particularly impressive considering that he was fighting relegation with Forest for most of it. So naturally this transitioning City team identified Anderson as a key piece in rebuilding the midfield. His role will be even more crucial now they have lost Rodri to Barcelona.

And on paper, this seems like the perfect recruit. Anderson’s quality is irrefutable and tactically he seems a perfect fit to play in the double pivot in Enzo Maresca’s favoured system.

The one drawback? It is a lot of money for a 23-year-old who is ultimately a risk at a very important time in City’s trajectory. City simply must get this new midfield up and running quickly. If Maresca does find a way to make this midfield tick perfectly then Anderson could become part of a new dynasty at the Etihad. If he fails, it is hard to see them having the control of matches needed to challenge for the title.

3) Morgan Rogers – Aston Villa to Chelsea for £117m – A

Next is big spenders Chelsea’s latest superstar and new record signing, Morgan Rogers.

The Stamford Bridge faithful are elated with this move. Chelsea have been screaming out for a world-class talent to join Cole Palmer in their attack after many failed attempts to develop such a player themselves.

Chelsea have overpaid for their new No 17 but not by an absurd amount. As was made clear last summer, elite talent does not come cheap. And that is exactly what new boss Xabi Alonso has got, a truly world-class young player with over two years’ experience in the top flight.

The price tag may well weigh on the 24-year-old’s mind, but he has already proved that he may very well be worth it, hitting the ground running with two marvellous performances in Chelsea’s first two games.

Nevertheless, no signing is ever guaranteed to be a success, especially one as expensive as this and Rogers will have to keep up this form if he is to fully justify the price.

2)  Bradley Barcola – PSG to Liverpool for £123m – A

An excellent addition to the Premier League, Bradley Barcola promises to bring a blend of flair and effectiveness to a Liverpool side that have been desperate for such a player.

Ever since the departure of Sadio Mane back in 2022 the Reds have just not been able to replace him, but it looks as if they may finally have their man. Barcola is one of Europe’s best forwards and was excellent for PSG on their way to back-to-back Champions League titles.

Questions will be asked over the price Liverpool have paid considering the struggles of their big money signings last season – however Barcola, if he can adapt, will be worth every penny.

Andoni Iraola looks to be the perfect coach for the 24-year-old as the Spaniard deploys his wingers in more central areas, gives them freedom to take on players and cut in.

If Iraola can find the perfect blend across his new £400million front line of Barcola, Isak and Wirtz then Liverpool could become a real threat as the season develops.

1) Enzo Fernandez – Chelsea to Manchester City for £125m – B

Heading up the list is the talented yet controversial Argentine.

A saga that dominated this summer’s window finally ended on deadline day and both teams involved will be glad it is over. Fernandez endured a tough summer but has come out of it as the latest addition to City’s rebuild.

Considering the amount City have paid, this move is a risk but a calculated one. They have taken a top talent of a fierce rival after his best league season.

We all know the 25-year-old’s temperament and petulance can cause problems for him and his side – as we saw in the World Cup final when he was sent off for a mindless tackle in extra time. He is also to expect a hostile reception from all Premier League fans due to his behaviour during and after Argentina’s defeat of England in the summer.

Chelsea would be lying if they said they wanted Fernandez to walk but they can find some solace in offloading an unhappy player for such a large amount – though they could come to regret this loss as they have failed to replace him. The two clubs are also set to compete closely this season so a gulf in quality in the midfield could give City the upper hand.

There is no guarantee of Fernandez succeeding in Manchester but if he can replicate the form he had shown under new City boss Enzo Maresca at Chelsea, then this could prove to be the ideal City signing.

Fernandez was a last-minute call-up for his City debut on Saturday, with the midfielder drafted into the starting line-up due to an injury sustained by Nico O’Reilly.

The midfielder appeared to seamlessly fit into the City team, which fans will hope bodes well for the future.

Gisele Bündchen Pleaded for Tom Brady’s Attention in Handwritten Letter

0

Gisele Bündchen reportedly pleaded with Tom Brady to spend more time with their children and give greater attention to their family in a “serious” handwritten letter sent before their highly publicized divorce.

According to Lars Anderson’s forthcoming book, “Brady: An American Story and the Price of Greatness,” the supermodel gave Brady the note after the New England Patriots’ loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in the 2018 Super Bowl.

“She explained that their marriage wasn’t working,” Anderson writes in an excerpt published Friday by the Daily Mail. “She needed more of him, more of his time, more of his attention, more of his heart.”

Anderson, who examines the former couple’s relationship in the book, which is scheduled for release Sept. 29, writes that Bündchen, 46, wanted Brady, 49, “to be present when he was at home.”

That meant not ignoring text messages on his constantly buzzing phone or mentally replaying football games, Anderson writes.

“She needed more help with the kids. She needed the chance to sleep in just a few days a week. She needed more time for her own career,” he adds.

One of Brady’s former teammates told Anderson that Bündchen was “a bigger international star” than her then-husband.

The teammate alleged that Bündchen had grown weary of living according to Brady’s schedule and spending much of football season in his shadow.

“She has a lot of pride, too. And, I mean, how many times did you see Tom supporting her career? There clearly were imbalances there,” the former teammate said.

Anderson says the couple attended marriage counseling, but Brady eventually stored Bündchen’s letter in a drawer.

“He’d pull it out on contemplative nights and reread every word, wanting to be reminded that he needed to tend to his marriage with the same tenacity he tended to his job,” Anderson writes.

Representatives for Brady and Bündchen did not respond to requests for comment about the upcoming book.

Bündchen ended her 13-year marriage to Brady on Oct. 28, 2022. Months earlier, Brady had announced his NFL retirement in February, only to reverse that decision a few weeks later.

“We have grown apart and while it is, of course, difficult to go through something like this, I feel blessed for the time we had together and only wish the best for Tom always,” the health guru wrote in an Instagram statement.

The former couple share two children: Benjamin, 16, and Vivian, 13.

Bündchen married jujitsu instructor Joaquim Valente in December 2025, and the couple welcomed a son, who is now 1 year old.

Gainesville Man Sentenced to 20 Years for Raping and Choking Woman

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Travis Lamont Hale Sr., 47, has been sentenced to 20 years in state prison after a jury convicted him of sexual battery, felony battery and domestic battery by strangulation.

Hale was arrested on Nov. 13, 2024, after a woman who had been in a relationship with him for several months told authorities that he beat and choked her, kept her with him for two days to stop her from contacting police, and then forced her to have sex with him.

The victim said Hale became angry on Nov. 9 because he believed another man had been in her apartment. Her family told him that only relatives, including her father, had been there, but he remained upset. According to the victim, Hale drove her to his apartment and threw her phone out of the vehicle’s window along the way.

She said she got out of the car at an intersection and walked home. However, she chose not to contact law enforcement because Hale had destroyed only her phone.

About an hour later, Hale returned to the apartment. The victim let him inside because he appeared calm and had brought back her computer. She said he again accused her of having a man in the apartment before punching her in the face and threatening to break her jaw. Hale then choked her until she lost consciousness. After she woke up, he took her to CVS for first-aid supplies, but she said swelling around her eyes had made it difficult to see.

Later that day, Hale took the victim with him to a job in Lake City. She said he kept her under constant watch for two days so she could not call police.

On Nov. 10, Hale told the victim he wanted to have sex. When she refused, he argued that it was unfair because “this is an apology.” The victim said she repeatedly told him no, but he forced her to have sexual intercourse.

During a trial that began Aug. 31, a jury acquitted Hale of destroying the victim’s phone but convicted him of sexual battery, felony battery and domestic battery by strangulation. Judge Denise Ferrero sentenced him to 15 years for sexual battery, followed by five years for felony battery, with credit for 661 days already served. He received a time-served sentence for domestic battery by strangulation, followed by five years of probation after his release. Hale will also be designated as a Sexual Offender.
