Rising Glacier Threats: Nepal Floods Sound Alarm on Himalayas’ Climate Crisis

0

BENGALURU, India — In Nepal, a deadly flash flood struck on Wednesday, and scientists speculate that the incident might have stemmed from a colossal glacier fragment breaking away. This event likely obstructed the river momentarily, with the subsequent release of pent-up water surging downstream with tremendous force hours later, as initial investigations suggest.

Researchers are diligently analyzing satellite images and ground reports to unravel the precise triggers of the torrent that claimed at least 353 lives. Over 1,300 individuals remain unaccounted for, including several international visitors and pilgrims.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a magnitude 5.2 glacier collapse occurred on Wednesday, pushing destructive debris downstream and devastating local communities. This conclusion was drawn from a combination of data acquired from proximate seismic stations, long-period seismic waves, and satellite imagery.

“It seems the lower section of a glacier has truly sheared off,” remarked Jakob Steiner, a geoscientist affiliated with the University of Graz in Austria, currently residing in Bangladesh. “When observing the visuals, it’s as if the glacier’s lower part was sliced away with an enormous knife.”

Steiner elaborated that the immense mass of glacial ice plummeting from a considerable height might have appeared akin to a bomb detonation, sparking the ensuing turmoil.

4 effective stair exercises to boost leg strength after 60, without needing a gym.

>

Prioritizing lower body strength becomes particularly crucial after the age of 60. From age 30 onwards, both men and women naturally experience a decline in leg power, especially if regular strength training isn’t part of their routine. As we age, maintaining mobility and strength is essential. Your body needs the ability to effectively navigate stairs and transition in and out of chairs. Drawing from years of experience, I’ve assisted countless individuals in recovering and maintaining leg strength post-60. Incorporating step training can be one of the most accessible and effective ways to keep your legs strong right at home.

One of the best things about step training is its simplicity; there’s no need for additional equipment. Your training ground is right where you live. A set of sturdy stairs is all you need to enhance your leg resilience and achieve a solid workout. These exercises target your quads, glutes, and calves while also challenging your balance. Ensure safety by using a nearby handrail or wall for support if needed.

You can amplify these exercises by tackling multiple steps at a time or opting for taller steps, but it’s advisable to begin with a height that’s comfortable and prioritize correct form first. Each movement should be executed smoothly and with control. Focus on performing the eccentric motion, or the lowering phase of the repetition, slowly to fully reap the benefits of each exercise.

Step-Ups

<p index-data-stream="8" data-extracted-layout="normalized">Step-Ups remain one of my favorite single-leg exercises because they provide a significant challenge for your leg muscles and they’re incredibly safe. Because you start each rep by standing up, it’s easier to dial in your form on the way back down, when the rep is more challenging. Plus, because your back leg stays straight the whole time, you don’t add any additional torque onto your back knee (like you would in the traditional lunge).</p>

<p index-data-stream="9" data-extracted-layout="normalized">Another benefit of steps is that it’s easy to add assistance by holding onto the handrail or a nearby wall for extra balance.</p>

<li>Place one foot on the step.</li>
<li>Press through that foot to step up.</li>
<li>Bring the other foot alongside it.</li>
<li>Step down slowly.</li>
<li>Alternate your lead leg.</li>
<li>Perform 8 to 12 repetitions per side.</li>

Going down the stairs requires much more control than going up. You don’t want to fall forward. One of the benefits of going slow is you increase the tension on the muscles and the ability to keep correct form during the exercise. Remember, the goal is to get stronger, not just to finish. Again, like with the step-ups, you can use the handrail for extra support. I recommend lowering for three to five seconds on each rep, with two seconds on the way back up.

How to Do It

  • Stand on the bottom step or a low step.
  • Hold the handrail if needed.
  • Shift your weight onto one leg.
  • Slowly lower the opposite heel toward the floor.
  • Lightly tap the heel down.
  • Press through the supporting foot to return.
  • Complete 8 to 10 repetitions per side.

Stair Calf Raises

Calf raises strengthen your lower legs, but also support your ankle stability and balance. I like using calf raises on stairs because you can use a greater range of motion than performing the same movement on flat ground. This is because you can hang your heels off the edge of the stair, during each rep. Another benefit is again the ability to hold the stair handrail for extra balance. You can also add a slight pause at the top of each rep for maximum burn.

How to Do It

  • Stand on the bottom stair with your heels slightly over the edge.
  • Hold the handrail.
  • Keep your feet hip-width apart.
  • Rise onto the balls of your feet.
  • Pause briefly at the top.
  • Lower your heels below the step level as far as comfortable.
  • Perform 12 to 15 repetitions.

This 12-Minute Routine Builds More Strength Than an Hour at the Gym After 60

Stair Marches

I like finishing with stair marches because this exercise combines everything: hip mobility, coordination, balance, and leg strength. As you drive your left knee up, your right side needs to maintain stability. Then, as you drive your right knee up, the left side must stabilize the body. This pattern is similar to the opposition needed for walking and stair climbing. Keep one hand close to the stair rail in case you need it. As you improve, increase your tempo.

How to Do It

  • Stand on the bottom step or close by the staircase.
  • Grasp the handrail with one hand.
  • Stand tall and brace your core.
  • Lift one knee toward your waist.
  • Lower it slowly.
  • Alternate legs.
  • Continue for 30 to 60 seconds.
  • Control the pace.

During an appearance on Alan Carr and Lee Peart’s Bottoms Up! podcast, Vito revealed that he would love to become a father one day and spoke of the “three loves of his life”.

“I would love to have three or five [children],” he shared with the hosts. “Or we could go to seven, it depends.”

Explaining his choice of numbers, the Italian dancer said he had always been a fan of odd numbers. “Yeah, I’ve always liked [them],” he added, before explaining that it was “perfect” to be in a group of three on the podcast.

Vito did not reveal whether there is currently a partner in his life, but he did make a reference to the three things he loves most.

Discussing why he wrote his latest book, he said: “It started because, I wanted to share not just my story, but I just wanted to share my three loves of my life, food, my family and dancing.”

“Basically when I am alone, away from home, when I’m abroad, since I was a kid [I’ve been] travelling, the only thing that has always been with me has been food,” he added.

“Imagine food as an entity, so food became my best friend, so don’t just think of food as something you eat and you put in your body.

“If you think of food as something a bit deeper, food has been with me in my lowest moments,” he went on to say, before adding that he is an emotional eater,” he continued.

Should Vito ever become a dad himself, he has seemingly been getting some practice with his co-star Dianne Buswell’s baby.

Uncovering the Cause of Nepal’s Devastating Mudslide Tragedy

0

In a devastating event that has rocked Nepal and Tibet, at least 273 lives have been claimed by severe floods. These floods were instigated by the collapse of a massive glacier and the subsequent debris flow, which created a phenomenon equating to a magnitude 5.2 landslide. This information has been confirmed by the U.S. Geological Service (USGS).

Initially, the USGS had attributed the deadly mudslides to a 4.4 magnitude earthquake. However, after a closer examination of nearby seismic data, long-period seismic waves, and satellite images, scientists adjusted their findings. The updated analysis indicated that there was no earthquake involved in triggering the disaster.

Experts in climate science from the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development, based in Kathmandu, have shared insights with The Associated Press. They pointed to a glacial avalanche as the likely culprit behind Wednesday’s flash floods, explaining the sudden onset of the calamity.

“Our hydrological observations have highlighted the extraordinary speed and magnitude of the resultant flood wave,” the experts stated. They provided a striking detail, noting that in a brief span of thirty minutes, the water levels of the Trishuli River surged upwards by an alarming 27 feet.

Rescue teams are now searching for the more than 1,300 people who went missing during the floods along the Nepal-China border. Many of them were foreigners and pilgrims.

Nepal Police on Thursday began posting lists of Nepali and foreign nationals missing. Several dozen Americans were listed.

Dozens of bridges were destroyed and nearly 25 miles of roads were damaged, hampering search and rescue efforts, according to Nepalese officials.

The Nepalese army rescued more than 100 people from flood-hit areas by helicopter Thursday morning, according to army spokesperson Brig. Gen. Raja Ram Basnet.

Bishal Kumar Bhandari, chairman of the Nepal Red Cross Society, told the AP that they have shifted focus to large-scale relief operations. He said that around 1,200 people were displaced from at least three villages.

Videos of the disaster showed raging floodwaters sweeping away cars, engulfing people trying to flee and destroying homes and bridges.

Debris was left tangled in tree branches and power lines, vehicles were buried and mud-covered survivors emerged as flooding cut off travel in some areas.

The village of Soley in Nuwakot, which has about 25 homes, was almost entirely destroyed, according to Kathmandu-based journalist Nirajan Paudyal, whose parents and other relatives live there. Desperate for news, he traveled to the area Thursday to check on his family.

“There is no update till now. I fear there won’t be any update,” Paudyal told the AP.

The disaster in Nepal and Tibet underscores a broader threat, as increasingly unstable Himalayan ice poses risks to communities, infrastructure and water supplies across one of the world’s most densely populated regions.

The region experienced similar flash flooding in August 2025, when high temperatures caused a glacial lake in Tibet to overflow. The resulting floods killed nine people and damaged critical infrastructure, including a bridge linking Nepal and China.

Historic Florida Operation Rescues 163 Missing Kids, Dismantles Predator Networks

0

In a groundbreaking initiative, Florida’s law enforcement officials have successfully retrieved 163 children who had gone missing, marking a significant milestone in the state’s ongoing efforts to protect its youth.

Attorney General James Uthmeier highlighted the grave circumstances many of these children faced, being targeted by those who exploit the defenseless. In a press release dated August 25, he commended the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, the Office of Statewide Prosecution, alongside local and state collaborators for their exceptional work. Uthmeier assured the public that these children are now safe and will receive the essential care they need. He also reaffirmed Florida’s leadership role in finding missing children and vowed stringent actions against those who inflict harm.

Operation Statewide Shield, as the initiative was named, stands out as the largest of its kind in Florida’s annals, achieving the recovery of children aged two months to 17 years.

Spanning five days, this colossal mission saw authorities tracking and rescuing children not only across Florida but extending their efforts to seven additional states, U.S. territories, and even reaching 12 countries, such as Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, Jamaica, and Ghana.

The operation’s findings, as detailed in the release, revealed that many of the children had endured severe abuse, neglect, and exploitation. Disturbingly, some were entangled in criminal networks, including human trafficking.

When asked about how the children went missing, Uthmeier explained that it “really does run the gamut.”

“You’ve got some relatives or distant relatives that will kidnap or get into custody battles over kids. You have some foster care situations where, unfortunately, kids are abused,” he explained during the press conference streamed by Fox 13. “You get some kids that are neglected, that run away, that turn to drugs. You get kids that fall victim to, you know, pimps that push them into prostitution, that run trafficking rings…Really all of the above. It’s a pretty sad situation.”

Authorities said the operation—which focused on identifying, locating and recovering the children—relied on the use of real-time intelligence and field operations and utilized seven sub operation hubs in Florida’s Pensacola, Tallahassee, Jacksonville, Orlando, Tampa, Fort Myers and Miami.

It resulted in multiple arrests including a defendant wanted in connection to three counts of lewd and lascivious acts with a minor and a warrant for interference with child custody. Law enforcement officers also arrested another defendant for lewd and lascivious battery on a victim 12 to 16 years old and another for interference in a child custody case.

Uthmeier said more arrests connected to the operation are expected in the coming days.

“The legal process will now begin at this point,” he said. “It’s important for us to continue our investigations to figure out who is leading a lot of the illicit behavior that is out there.”

As the operation’s victim service coordinator, More Too Life’s Kim Figueroa worked closely with victim advocates serving as a central point of contact for the children at the recovery hubs to make them feel safe and meet their immediate needs.

“During this operation, 163 children were recovered. Behind that number, 163 individual children, each with their own story, their own experiences, and their own needs,” she explained in the press conference. “Our responsibility was not simply to locate these children; it was to make sure that when they were recovered, they were met with compassion, safety, dignity, and support.”

Representative Danny Alvarez also offered a warning to those who victimize children.

“The results of this combined law-enforcement operation should make one thing very clear: Florida will never tolerate you harming our children,” he said, according to the release. “To every sick person in this society who even tries it, if you think you got away with it you should keep looking over your shoulder every second of your life because we’re coming, and we will never rest in order to protect our children and their futures.”

Discover 3 Hidden Factors Accelerating Your Aging Process

0

Everyday habits and the surroundings we live in play a significant role in the health of our cells and the pace of biological aging.

This insight comes from Dr. Will Cole, a functional medicine expert and the co-author of the forthcoming book “Heal Your Cells.” Dr. Cole argues that modern lifestyle choices could be a root cause of cellular issues, which in turn may impact inflammation, disrupt sleep patterns, and affect other vital processes essential to health.

“Our genetic blueprint has remained stable for millennia, yet in a remarkably short span, our environment has shifted dramatically,” said Cole in a conversation with Fox News Digital from his base in Pennsylvania.

“We’re dealing with the repercussions of our dietary choices, exposure to environmental pollutants previously unknown, and the pervasive presence of stress and trauma,” he added.

Cole points out that these factors may lead to what he terms an “accelerated aging problem,” where one’s biological age could vastly outpace their chronological age.

“Many people in their 20s, 30s and 40s have the cells of a senior citizen,” he said. “That’s common, [but] not normal.”

Cole noted that people may normalize persistent symptoms, such as brain fog and fatigue, instead of discussing them with a health professional.

Those symptoms are non-specific and can stem from a range of medical, lifestyle and mental health factors.

Cole said that, in some cases, changes tied to cellular dysfunction may begin years before a person receives a medical diagnosis — but that people often dismiss or push through early symptoms.

He identified the following three factors that can most disrupt cellular communication, creating “cellular noise” that may contribute to accelerated aging and disease.

No. 1: An unhealthy diet

Eating foods that “don’t love human body back” is the first agitator of cell health — particularly inflammatory foods, according to Cole.

Failing to stick to a consistent eating window — and instead eating over long stretches of the day without giving the body time to digest and fast — can also disrupt cellular balance, he said.

No. 2: Exposure to toxins

Cole cited certain environmental exposures, including pesticides, herbicides and PFAS — sometimes called “forever chemicals” — as potential concerns for overall health.

The effects of an exposure depend on the substance, dose and duration of contact, experts say.

He also pointed to infectious pathogens, such as bacteria and viruses, and exposure to mold as factors that can affect health.

Evening exposure to blue-enriched light can interfere with circadian timing for some people, while a consistent sleep-wake schedule and daytime light exposure may support healthy sleep and cellular health, Cole added.

No. 3: Chronic stress, trauma and disconnection

Cole also pointed to chronic stress, unresolved trauma and a lack of social or spiritual connection as factors that could be linked to more cellular noise.

Some observational research has linked religious or spiritual involvement with lower levels of certain inflammatory markers and better health outcomes, although such studies cannot prove that faith itself causes those effects.

“That’s something that’s not talked [about] a lot in the biohacking world,” Cole said.

“What’s your relationship with God and how does that show up in the cells on a somatic level?”

“The research shows that people who have a ‘faith walk’ tend to live longer, healthier, more youthful, vibrant lives.”

Cole said a person may find similar benefits through any belief system or community that “shifts your state,” as well as through a connection to nature.

Giving the body a ‘fighting chance’

Modern stressors may affect the body in ways that are not always immediately visible, Cole noted.

“The cell becomes confused and doesn’t know how to function well and doesn’t know how [to] repair itself,” he said.

“We just need to give our body a fighting chance to hear through the noise.”

He added that addressing physical, mental-emotional and spiritual well-being may help reduce what he calls “epigenetic noise.”

Justice Department Indicts Over 80 Individuals in Major Puerto Rico Gang Bust

SAN JUAN – In a major legal victory against criminal organizations, the U.S. Justice Department has filed charges against more than 80 individuals linked to a notorious Puerto Rican gang, revealed Attorney General Todd Blanche. His announcement on Thursday was part of a broader visit to the island, aligning with the Trump administration’s vigorous campaign against violent crime.

Federal prosecutors have identified the gang, known as “Los Baja Deo,” as a major player in drug trafficking, with a notorious history of dealing fentanyl, cocaine, and other illicit substances. Originating from Mayagüez on the island’s west coast, the group allegedly amassed nearly $50 million from their activities. According to Blanche, the gang is linked to violent crimes including shootings, kidnappings, and murders, alongside distributing over 340 kilograms of fentanyl and fentanyl-infused narcotics.

“Our Homeland Security Task Forces throughout the nation stand united in their mission to eradicate criminal cartels, foreign gangs, and transnational criminal organizations infiltrating the United States,” Attorney General Blanche affirmed to reporters, speaking from the U.S. attorney’s office in San Juan.

Blanche’s visit to this U.S. Caribbean territory spotlights the current administration’s strategic focus on dismantling the cartels and gangs that pose significant threats through drug trafficking and violence. Under President Trump’s administration, the Justice Department has been dramatically realigned, prioritizing the eradication of illegal immigration and violent criminal activities.

“These 81 violent gang members now face the scales of justice, and any who aspire to take their place will meet the same fate,” declared Héctor Ramírez-Carbó, the acting U.S. attorney for Puerto Rico. “Today marks a new chapter for the families of Mayagüez, who can once again relish the peace and safety of their community.”

Ohio Man Arrested for Disturbing Threats Against Trump and Florida Congressman

0

A 26-year-old man from Ohio finds himself in deep legal trouble as he faces charges in Florida that could result in up to five years behind bars in federal prison.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — An Ohio resident is now confronting a serious federal accusation after allegedly making threats to assassinate former President Donald Trump and decapitate a U.S. congressman.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Florida, Alex Miller, a 26-year-old hailing from Columbus, Ohio, has been detained and charged with transmitting threats of injury across state lines.

As per federal court documents, Miller allegedly dispatched an email on August 18 to Representative Randy Fine, a Republican from Florida, ominously titled, “Can’t wait to snipe your head off your shoulders!! :).”

Federal prosecutors claim that within the email, Miller menaced to set the congressman’s home ablaze and murder him and his entire family while they were sleeping. Additionally, he is accused of labeling Fine a Nazi and threatening both his beheading and the killing of Donald Trump.

“You deserve 10,000% to be beheaded and have your body paraded through the streets,” the email said, according to court records.

Fine represents Florida’s 6th Congressional District, which includes Daytona Beach and part of northeast Florida adjacent to the Atlantic Ocean.

The email was reported to the FBI, and search warrants connected Miller to the email account and address it was sent from.

An exhibit submitted by federal prosecutors, reportedly showing Miller’s Facebook account, reveals he also left reviews on the pages of several government officials.

Under former Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, court documents said Miller called her a “garbage human being all around” and “mentally unfit” for her job. He also allegedly left a review using derogatory language and referencing beheading about White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt.

Miller was arrested in Columbus on Aug. 19 and is currently being held at the Franklin County jail, according to the jail’s inmate roster.

If convicted, Miller could spend up to five years in federal prison, the attorney’s office said.
