Defy Age with These 4 Quick Standing Exercises to Banish Arm Jiggle After 50

0

Are your upper arms starting to show unwanted jiggle now that you’re over 50? Discover four simple standing exercises that can make a difference.

>

As we age, especially past 50, it’s common for the skin on our upper arms to appear looser. This change is often due to a natural decline in muscle mass and the body’s shifting fat storage patterns. Many individuals turn to spending more hours at the gym, tackling isolated curls and tricep exercises, hoping that increased repetitions will swiftly tone their arms. However, as a seasoned trainer, I’ve observed that a more holistic strategy involves engaging the shoulders, triceps, chest, upper back, and core collectively through functional standing exercises. By developing muscle across the upper body, you’ll cultivate not only stronger, but also more capable arms, enhancing your overall body’s function and movement.

No need for lengthy gym sessions to give your arms an effective workout. Standing exercises are particularly efficient in this regard, as they compel your upper body to exert itself while your legs and core stabilize your stance, promoting a full-body workout with each repetition. This approach also refines posture, coordination, and balance, frequently leading to arms appearing more sculpted, largely because you stand taller and move with greater confidence. The aim here is to build functional strength rather than simply pursuing an incessant pump from isolated movements.

Over my years of guiding those over 50, I’ve witnessed impressive transformations in individuals who reliably execute basic movements with precision. The four exercises I recommend specifically target the muscles responsible for stronger, firmer arms, while simultaneously treating the body as an integrated system. Minimal equipment is required, allowing these exercises to seamlessly fit into a morning routine, a workout during your lunch break, or a quick evening session. By practicing them consistently and emphasizing controlled repetitions, you’ll provide your upper body with a compelling reason to retain muscle strength as you age.

Standing Overhead Press

The overhead press deserves a place in almost every upper-body routine because it trains the shoulders and triceps together while forcing the core to stabilize your torso. I especially like this standing variation because your entire body contributes to keeping you balanced as you press. Stronger shoulders provide the foundation for nearly every reaching and lifting task you perform throughout the day. As your pressing strength improves, everyday activities such as placing dishes on a high shelf or lifting a light box overhead become easier. Use light dumbbells or resistance bands at first and prioritize smooth, controlled movement over heavy resistance.

How to Do It

  • Stand with your feet about shoulder-width apart.
  • Hold light dumbbells at shoulder height.
  • Tighten your core and keep your chest lifted.
  • Press both weights overhead.
  • Stop before locking your elbows aggressively.
  • Lower slowly to shoulder height.
  • Perform 10 to 12 repetitions.

Standing Resistance Band Row

Firm-looking arms require strong pulling muscles just as much as strong pushing muscles. Resistance band rows target the upper back, rear shoulders, and biceps while encouraging you to keep your chest open and shoulders properly positioned. I frequently use rows with clients who want better-looking arms because stronger upper-back muscles improve posture and create a more balanced upper body. The movement also counteracts the rounded posture that often develops from years of sitting at desks, driving, or looking down at screens. Every controlled pull gives your arms and back a reason to stay strong.

How to Do It

  • Secure a resistance band at about chest height.
  • Stand tall while holding one end in each hand.
  • Keep your arms extended in front of you.
  • Pull your elbows backward.
  • Squeeze your shoulder blades together.
  • Pause briefly.
  • Return your hands forward with control.
  • Complete 12 to 15 repetitions.

4 Chair Exercises That Restore Leg Strength Faster Than Lifting Weights After 65

Standing Triceps Kickback

The triceps make up a significant portion of your upper arm, so strengthening them deserves plenty of attention when your goal involves firmer-looking arms. This standing variation allows you to isolate the triceps without requiring a complicated machine or heavy load. I want clients to focus on keeping their upper arms still while extending the elbows because swinging the weights shifts work away from the target muscles. Slow repetitions create much more productive tension than rushing through a long set. As your triceps grow stronger, pushing, lifting, and carrying tasks also become easier.

How to Do It

  • Stand with your feet hip-width apart.
  • Hold a light dumbbell in each hand.
  • Hinge forward slightly while keeping your back flat.
  • Pull your elbows behind your body.
  • Straighten your arms behind you.
  • Squeeze the triceps at the end of the movement.
  • Bend your elbows slowly.
  • Perform 10 to 15 repetitions.

Standing Cross-Body Punches

I like finishing with cross-body punches because they combine arm endurance with core stability and gentle rotational movement. Every punch challenges the shoulders and triceps while your abdominal muscles stabilize your torso and your legs keep you grounded. Unlike an isolated arm exercise, this movement keeps multiple muscle groups working continuously, making it an excellent way to finish a short workout. The steady rhythm also raises your heart rate without requiring complicated equipment. Focus on control rather than speed, and you’ll feel your shoulders and arms working hard by the end of the set.

How to Do It

  • Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart.
  • Keep your knees slightly bent.
  • Bring your hands near your chest.
  • Punch one arm across your body.
  • Return your hand to the starting position.
  • Alternate sides.
  • Keep your core engaged throughout.
  • Continue for 45 to 60 seconds.

Massachusetts Police Launch Manhunt After Off-Duty Officer Found Dead

An intensive search operation is currently unfolding in Massachusetts as law enforcement hunts for a 58-year-old woman who officials caution could be carrying a weapon. This comes in the wake of a Worcester police officer being discovered dead at her residence.

The Worcester Police Department has broadcast an alert, stating they are diligently searching for Karen Solomon in connection with the death of a man found at her home.

Authorities have described Solomon as a White woman aged 58, with dark brown hair and brown eyes. She was last seen in pajama shorts paired with a tank top, reportedly moving towards Westcott Street.

“There is concern she may be armed,” officials remarked. However, they have yet to release the identity of the deceased male or details regarding the cause of death.

Police said the officer found dead was a 30-year veteran of the force and was off duty at the time he was found. He has not yet been identified.

CBS Boston reported that Massachusetts State Police were searching the area with a helicopter and that a special emergency response team was being brought in to search nearby woods. Fox News has reached out to authorities for confirmation and additional details.

Solomon’s home is on Wildwood Avenue, where authorities are conducting the death investigation, according to CBS Boston. The outlet also reported that Solomon said in a 2016 interview that she was married to a Worcester police officer and had made telling the stories of law enforcement a personal mission.

Solomon told WBZ-TV at the time that she was inspired to write “Hearts Beneath The Badge” after her son came home from school and asked why someone had told him that police “kill people for no reason.” Solomon said she wanted to highlight the good deeds officers perform, from buying meals to saving lives and putting themselves in danger for others.

She later wrote “The Price They Pay,” which focused on what she described as the darker side of policing, including the pain and anxiety officers can experience on the job.

Solomon also developed 1stHelp.Net, a website designed to connect first responders experiencing mental, physical or financial crises with resources. She told WBZ-TV that many officers she interviewed did not know where to seek help or were afraid to do so.

Neighbors told CBS Boston they were stunned by the developments. One resident described the officer as an “awesome guy” who he regularly saw walking around the neighborhood.

Police urged members of the public who spot Solomon not to approach her and to immediately contact authorities.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Worcester Police Department at 508-799-8606 or dial 911 in an emergency.

News Media reached out to the Worcester District Attorney’s Office, Massachusetts State Police and Worcester Police Department for comment but did not immediately receive a response.

Dodgers Promote Emmet Sheehan for Vital Bullpen Support

Emmet Sheehan’s brief stint in triple-A was a mere pause, lasting only a few short weeks.

Following the MLB trade deadline, Sheehan was sent to the minors to refine his delivery, which had been noticeably erratic. However, on Tuesday, sources informed The California Post that the Dodgers plan to recall him.

Sheehan is likely to be utilized as a bullpen option and was already seen at Coors Field in Denver just hours before the Dodgers were scheduled to face off against the Rockies on Tuesday night.

Although once regarded as one of the Dodgers’ most promising pitching talents, the 26-year-old right-hander has faced significant struggles in his third year in the major league.

Across 20 starts this season, Sheehan has recorded a 4-8 win-loss tally and a 5.29 ERA. Throughout the campaign, his performance has been plagued by fluctuating velocity and mechanical issues.

It culminated with a 2 ⅔-inning, five-run clunker against the Red Sox on the eve of the trade deadline.

The following afternoon –– with the Dodgers having acquired Tarik Skubal and kept Eric Lauer through the trade deadline –– Sheehan was sent to Oklahoma City for what both manager Dave Roberts and general manager Brandon Gomes described as a “reset.”

After giving up two runs in an intentionally brief 22-pitch outing on Aug. 8, Sheehan bounced back with an impressive start last week, throwing 5 ⅔ scoreless innings with eight strikeouts and only three hits allowed.

That was enough for the Dodgers to bring him back to the majors, where they could use extra length out of the bullpen during a series at hitter-friendly Coors Field.

For Sheehan, it will represent something of a fresh start in his previously disappointing season, and give him a chance to begin staking a claim for a potential postseason relief role –– similar to the one he had last year.

Tupac’s Family in Tears as Heartbreaking Autopsy Photos Unveiled in Court

0

In a courtroom retelling of history, former crime scene analyst Thomas Kern took the stand to recount his involvement in the autopsy of iconic rapper Tupac Shakur. Kern distinctly remembered being present during the procedure back in 1996.

Once Kern concluded his statements, the prosecution introduced Dr. Lisa Gavin, who works as a forensic pathologist and medical examiner, to put her expertise to the test regarding Shakur’s tragic case.

Though Dr. Gavin was still in medical school at the time of Shakur’s untimely death, she was called upon to provide an expert analysis of the autopsy photos, sharing her professional insights with the court.

Dr. Gavin presented to the jury images of the legendary musician’s lifeless body, explaining the trajectory of bullets that pierced his chest and abdomen, which were ultimately fatal.

The prosecution highlighted a stark transformation: while the rapper was alive, he had a slender physique, but postmortem photographs revealed a bloated appearance, a condition Dr. Gavin clarified as resulting from tissue expansion after death.

Dr Gavin confirmed that the office had an affidavit from Tupac’s mother confirming that the body was that of her son and that he was dead.

The pictures were not broadcast to the public. Most of Tupac’s family members left the courtroom when the pictures were shown.

In cross-examination by the defense, Dr Gavin noted there were no records missing from the autopsy report, however, there were ‘few photos of the body itself,’ so ‘consequently, the crime scene analyst photos were helpful in order to come to a determination, in addition to the reports.’

In a courtroom charged with anticipation, Thomas Kern, a former crime scene analyst, took the stand to share his recollections from the 1996 autopsy of iconic rapper Tupac Shakur. His testimony shed new light on the intricate details surrounding Tupac’s untimely demise.

Building on Kern’s insights, the prosecution introduced Dr. Lisa Gavin, a seasoned forensic pathologist and medical examiner, to further analyze the circumstances of the rapper’s tragic end.

Despite being in medical school during the time of Tupac’s murder, Dr. Gavin brought her expert perspective to the proceedings, meticulously examining and interpreting the autopsy photographs of the late artist.

As the court was presented with haunting images of Tupac’s remains, Dr. Gavin provided key testimony on the fatal trajectory of the bullets that pierced his chest and abdomen, sealing his fate.

Prosecutors highlighted a stark transformation in Tupac’s appearance postmortem, describing him as ‘bloated’ compared to his notoriously ‘skinny’ figure in life. Dr. Gavin clarified that this swelling was due to tissue expansion after death, offering a medical explanation for the unsettling change.

Gavin confirmed that the office had an affidavit from Tupac’s mother confirming that the body was her that of her son, and that he was dead.

The pictures were not broadcast to the public. Most of Tupac’s family members left the courtroom when the pictures were shown.

In cross-examination by the defense, Gavin noted there were no records missing from the autopsy report, however, there were ‘few photos of the body itself,’ so ‘consequently the crime scene analyst photos were helpful in order to come to a determination, in addition to the reports.’

Alex Murdaugh Seeks New Venue for High-Stakes Double-Murder Retrial

0

Alex Murdaugh may see his second trial take place in Richland County, South Carolina. His defense team argues the move away from the Lowcountry would bring the advantage of a bigger jury pool and help tackle extensive logistical expenses.

On Monday, court documents were filed by Murdaugh’s legal representatives, indicating their request for Richland County as the venue for the retrial. These documents were accessed by WIS in Columbia and have been evaluated by News Media.

The request follows a decision by Judge Debra R. McCaslin last Friday, mandating that Murdaugh’s retrial be relocated from Colleton County, though the new site had yet to be determined.

At a recent hearing, defense lawyer Phillip D. Barber maintained that moving the trial to Charleston wouldn’t incur higher costs than other regions in South Carolina.

“You don’t think the cost of living is higher in Charleston?” prosecutor Creighton Waters asked.

“McDonald’s is the same price in Charleston as anywhere else,” Barber replied.

In their latest filing, Barber and the defense team ask that the trial be moved to Richland County.

Murdaugh was granted a new trial after the South Carolina Supreme Court found former Colleton County Clerk of Court Becky Hill improperly influenced jurors during his 2023 murder trial, undermining his right to a fair proceeding.

“The size of the potential jury venire is on a scale comparable to Charleston, thus giving a much greater opportunity to find an impartial jury,” the defense wrote. “Further, although not an absolute requirement, the racial demographics are similar to Colleton.”

Murdaugh’s team said a Richland County trial would eliminate the need for either side to book hotel rooms for attorneys, staff or South Carolina Law Enforcement Division witnesses.

The April 5, 2027, trial is scheduled during the Masters Tournament. Prosecutors argued the event could make it harder to find hotel rooms in Richland County, but the defense said the first week would likely be spent selecting jurors, reducing the need for lodging.

“The State objected that the Masters golf tournament during the first trial week might make Richland County accommodations unavailable, but it is unlikely witnesses would need hotel rooms during the first trial week because that week will be mostly or entirely consumed by jury selection,” the defense wrote.

The defense also asked McCaslin to consider its costs, arguing it does not have the state’s “nearly limitless resources.”

“It was Defendant’s constitutional rights, not the State’s, which were violated by the intentional conduct of Becky Hill, an elected state official,” Murdaugh’s team wrote. “One reason Defendant suggested Charleston is that the defense has access to offices near the courthouse.”

“The State of course has offices at every courthouse in South Carolina,” the defense continued. “It is appropriate that the Court act to protect the people of Colleton County from costs created by their own elected official’s unexpected criminal conduct, but it would be inappropriate to do so by imposing excessive and avoidable costs on the victim of her conduct.”

At his 2023 trial, Murdaugh acknowledged misleading investigators about his location shortly before his wife, Maggie, and son, Paul, were shot, but he has consistently denied killing either of them.

News Media has reached out to both the defense and prosecution for comment.

Revived Tungsten Mine Fuels Growth Amid Global Tensions

0

In a timely and stark reminder of global conflict, an Australian mine rich in tungsten is set to reopen just as tensions flare worldwide.

Nestled on King Island, the Dolphin Mine is home to one of the planet’s largest tungsten deposits. Known for its durability, tungsten is a crucial component in producing armor-piercing munitions and robust armor plating.

Historically, this mine has seen its share of both wartime activity and peacetime dormancy over the last century. Today, however, it’s a hive of preparation as investors anticipate a boom in demand for this strategic metal.

Originally opened in 1917 to support munitions production during World War I, the Dolphin Mine was soon shut down in 1920, a casualty of the subsequent peace that disrupted the tungsten market.

Revived in 1938 with the threat of World War II, the mine has repeatedly opened and closed, pulsating with the geopolitical dramas of the Korean and Vietnam wars.

The Cold War weapons boom kept the mine alive for a time, but it eventually fell to seemingly permanent ruin 12 months after the Berlin Wall fell in 1989.

The mine’s open pit lay flooded with water for three decades before work began to bring it back into operation, with the redevelopment beginning in January 2022, just weeks before Russian President Vladimir Putin launched his invasion of Ukraine.

Now in 2026, work is underway to ramp up tungsten production at the mine due to increased demand driven by the current wars, with the first underground ore extraction and delivery scheduled for September.

It also comes amid a global rush to secure rare minerals at a higher rate than China, which produces the bulk of the world’s tungsten supply.

Beijing has ramped up its military power in recent years as it eyes the annexation of Taiwan, an event that could lead to a major war in the Pacific region.

The Pentagon has previously warned that China would make its move against Taiwan within the decade after it has built up enough resources to launch an attack.

The US has also joined the rush to secure metals of war, including a recent $1.6 billion deal to mine one of the world’s largest untapped tungsten reserves in Kazakhstan.

The metal is one of the key components for America’s air defense missiles, which are reportedly running low after months of war with Iran.

The Trump administration, which denies the shortage, is ramping up missile production, fueling a surge in investment in critical metal mines.

NFL Coach’s Wife Urged Him to Exit Post-Shooting Incident

Eric Bieniemy, the offensive coordinator for the Kansas City Chiefs, shared that his wife, Mia, encouraged his return to the team because he was beginning to drive her ‘crazy’ at home.

After a tumultuous incident at his residence in Virginia on July 26, the 57-year-old Bieniemy took a brief leave from the Chiefs’ training camp. Just two weeks later, he rejoined the team, expressing that it felt ‘great to be back’ following the challenging family situation.

According to the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office, his 27-year-old son, Elijah, faced charges of malicious wounding, using a firearm in a felony, and firing a weapon within a dwelling. This came after a shooting incident left Mia with severe injuries from ‘multiple gunshot wounds.’

Having rejoined the Chiefs, where he previously claimed two Super Bowl victories as offensive coordinator from 2018 to 2022, Bieniemy spoke to the public about the ordeal for the first time. He shared how his wife’s encouragement was instrumental in his return to camp while also providing an optimistic update on her recovery.

During a press conference following practice on Tuesday, he began by expressing gratitude to the reporters for their ‘love and support’ during this difficult period.

‘Obviously the unfortunate circumstances that took place is very hurtful in a way, but on top of that I just respect that you guys are respecting our privacy, and hats off to you.

‘I also would like to say thank you to the Hunt family, the entire Chiefs family, for the outpouring the love and support that my family has received through this particular situation.

‘But with all that being said, we’re back to football and I’m all ears.’

He later revealed his wife had given him the green light to return to Kansas City, after he had been staying in close contact with the team remotely while being with her during her initial recovery.

‘She is on a road to recovery,’ Bieniemy said. ‘She is doing great.

‘It’s one of the main reasons why I’m back here because of her recovery. She is truly a soldier. She’s a saint. It’s been incredible to watch, but I know I was driving her and a bunch of family members crazy in the house.

‘I was yelling at the screen, yelling at players, yelling at coaches – ‘What the hell are we doing?!’ I’m yelling at myself, ‘Why would you put that play in!?’ Bieniemy said, smiling. ‘At the end of the day, I was making sure I was keeping up with what was going on.

‘So she was like, ‘You have my blessing to leave, so it was time to get back.’

Bieniemy shared that his language caught some of his family members by surprise as he watched practices via video link

‘Technology is pretty impressive,’ he said. ‘My language probably got a little colorful in the house. I had a bunch of family members that were there that really never heard some of the language that was used. It felt good just to see the guys work and to feel like I was still a part of it.’

Mia called 911 herself following the incident as dispatchers warned responders that ‘the son still has a weapon currently located within the home.’

According to NBC Washington, she still has fragments of bullet inside her following surgery she required after being shot in the left forearm and shoulder by a bullet that traveled across her chest.

After being taken into custody, Elijah has been held by police without bond. A Virginia judge recently approved a motion for a formal mental health evaluation after court documents filed by his public defender saying he ‘appears to suffer from significant mental health issues.’

Tragic Ohio Trench Collapse: Ignored Warnings Lead to Fatal Disaster

0

Workers at an Ohio construction site expressed concerns over the hazardous depth of a trench dug for storm drain replacement. Despite their warnings, federal authorities revealed that they were ordered to proceed, moments before the trench gave way, tragically claiming one life and leaving two others gravely injured.

On December 5, 28-year-old Jose Alberto Barajas Martinez lost his life in a trench collapse near Milford. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) later discovered that the trench, approximately 8 feet deep, was inadequately protected against collapses, defying federal regulations that mandate safety measures for trenches exceeding 5 feet in depth, stated records from the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Cited for five safety infractions, Whispering Creek LLC, the landscaping firm at the heart of the incident, originally faced a fine of $231,714, as per reports. This penalty was later reduced to $49,000, while prosecutors in Clermont County weigh potential criminal proceedings.

David Baumgardner, the proprietor of the company, was present at the site on the day of the collapse and was familiar with the trench’s specifications, according to reports. He acknowledged to investigators that he had implemented safety barriers against cave-ins on prior projects.

Asked why he did not use a trench box, Baumgardner said the workers were not deep enough.

Investigators accused Baumgardner of “conscious disregard,” saying he knew the safety requirements but failed to follow them. They also cited his explanation about the trench’s depth as evidence of “plain indifference,” according to the paper.

Baumgardner told the newspaper that Barajas Martinez was his friend and that his death had deeply affected him.

“I actually saved one of the workers myself,” he said.

The three men were installing corrugated pipe in a residential yard when the trench collapsed around 3:30 p.m., FOX19 Cincinnati reported in December.

Firefighters found one man completely buried and unconscious and the other two awake but partially buried, Miami Township Fire Chief Dave Jetter told the station at the time.

The trench was too unstable for firefighters to immediately enter. Crews gave the men oxygen and heated blankets while waiting for equipment to shore up the excavation.

Rescuers then worked bucket by bucket to uncover the men. One man was pronounced dead, while it took about six hours to free both survivors, the station reported.

OSHA investigators later found that ladders seen inside the trench had been brought in during the rescue and were not there when the workers entered, according to the Enquirer. The agency also cited Whispering Creek for inadequate inspections and worker training and for keeping excavated soil and equipment too close to the trench’s edge.

One survivor suffered eight fractures and the other two broken ribs. Both also suffered serious internal injuries, according to the Enquirer. A family GoFundMe identified one survivor as Jaime Barajas, the father of Barajas Martinez.

Baumgardner said one survivor has returned to work while the other is still recovering.

A Miami Township police report listed reckless homicide and negligent assault as possible charges, according to FOX19. Baumgardner told the Enquirer he expected felony charges, but none were listed as of Aug. 14.

The Clermont County Prosecutor’s Office is reviewing the case.

Kyle Tucker’s Challenging Season with Dodgers Leads to Emotional Dugout Moment

0

Kyle Tucker’s challenging inaugural season with the Los Angeles Dodgers appears to be weighing heavily on him, both physically and emotionally.

A video clip recently shared on X captured a poignant moment: Tucker sat alone in the Dodgers’ dugout during Monday’s 11-5 triumph over the Colorado Rockies. His demeanor was somber as he rubbed his face and eyes with both hands before lowering his gaze to the ground.

This scene unfolded as Tucker grapples with the relentless pressure of his prolonged slump. The 29-year-old’s distress was palpable, underscoring the struggles that have inexplicably marred what was hoped to be a promising season.

Monday night brought further challenges for Tucker to absorb.

He endured another tough outing, going 0-for-5 and stretching his record-breaking hitless streak to a daunting 25 at-bats. His last chance, a groundout against Rockies position player Troy Johnston, who took the mound in the ninth inning, did little to break his unfortunate streak.

Earlier, Tucker committed another ugly defensive mistake, dropping a routine fly ball in right field after appearing to hesitate before attempting the catch. The sequence added another chapter to a stretch that has seen Tucker’s season reach increasingly alarming depths.

“Catching a baseball at your ankles kind of speaks to where his head is at right now,” manager Dave Roberts said afterward.

That assessment felt particularly striking alongside the dugout video.

Tucker has openly acknowledged his mounting frustration. Before Monday’s game, he admitted he had “tried just about everything” to escape his historic struggles, saying every apparent breakthrough seems to be followed by another setback.

“Every time I feel like I’m turning a corner, I get hit with a roadblock,” Tucker said.

Those roadblocks are piling up.

Tucker is batting around .230 with an OPS below .700 after signing a four-year, $240 million contract in January. His disastrous homestand culminated in an 0-for-19 stretch and boos from Dodgers fans after another defensive miscue.

Things have deteriorated enough that former Dodgers slugger Eric Karros suggested on SportsNet LA that Tucker might benefit from a more dramatic “reset,” even floating the possibility of sending him to Arizona temporarily to work away from the major-league club.

Roberts has instead emphasized support.

“It’s not from lack of effort, or care,” Roberts said. “It’s just kind of right now, I think he’s kind of fighting.”

Monday’s dugout scene appeared to capture exactly that.

What was actually going through Tucker’s mind cannot be known from six seconds of video.

What is increasingly difficult to miss is just how heavily the worst season of his career appears to be weighing on him.
