Teen Sea Survivor Tried to Hold On to Brother and Cousin for Days

0

A 15-year-old boy from Alaska endured a staggering 62 hours stranded at sea after a small family fishing boat overturned in the icy Bering Sea. During the ordeal, Derek Parker Aghnaanga reportedly tried desperately to keep hold of his brother and cousin after they drowned.

Aghnaanga had no food or drinking water as he clung to the capsized skiff near the remote St. Lawrence Island, facing brutal conditions for more than two days.

As he fought to survive in the freezing water, the teenager was eventually unable to keep the bodies of his two relatives with him.

His aunt, Colleen Walker, said the teenager had tried to hold on to his 35-year-old brother, Sidney Kulowiyi, and his 34-year-old cousin, Barton Rookok.

“He tried to hang on as long as he could after they drowned,” Walker wrote on a fundraising page set up in support of the grieving family.

Left by himself, Aghnaanga remained kneeling on top of the overturned vessel while it drifted through frigid Bering Sea waters in the direction of the Russian border.

His mother, Vina Kulowiyi, said faith helped carry her son through the frightening Alaska boat disaster.

“4 days and 3 nights. He lived on prayer with no food and water,” she wrote on Facebook. “He said he sat like this praying the whole time.”

The extraordinary ordeal began September 4 when Aghnaanga headed out from Savoonga with his older brother and cousin to fish for halibut.

The three were aboard a small skiff when disaster struck near St. Lawrence Island.

A family spokesman has said one of their fishing lines may have become tangled in the motor, causing the vessel to overturn.

Kulowiyi, who was captaining the boat, became trapped underneath the overturned skiff and drowned, according to relatives.

Rookok initially managed to survive the capsize and remained with his teenage cousin for about another day.

But family members said he eventually became distressed, went into the water and also died.

Aghnaanga was suddenly the only survivor, stranded on the tiny overturned hull surrounded by miles of open ocean.

Walker has now revealed the agonizing lengths the boy went to in an attempt to keep his brother and cousin with him even after they had died.

The tragedy was particularly devastating for the teenager because of his close relationship with his older brother.

Their father died when Aghnaanga was younger, and Walker previously said Kulowiyi had become something of a father figure to the boy.

Kulowiyi was a commercial fishing captain and was described by his aunt as a humble and loving ‘provider for people in the village.’

Fishing remains a vital part of everyday life in Savoonga, a community of roughly 800 people where catches are routinely shared with relatives and neighbors.

‘That’s how we do it in our community. We take care of one another,’ Walker previously said. ‘We still live a traditional way of life even if the world is changing.’

But as the hours passed at sea, nobody knew if Aghnaanga was still alive.

The fishing party had been expected to return home by early Sunday morning, but when they failed to appear, Alaska State Troopers eventually alerted the US Coast Guard at around 8.30pm that night.

Aircraft were dispatched to scour the vast stretch of ocean.

Then, at around 10.30am on September 7, a Coast Guard aircrew spotted the teenager, wearing a bright yellow jacket and kneeling on top of the overturned skiff.

The Coast Guard dropped a life raft and emergency supplies before calling on the Northwest Explorer, a nearby fishing vessel carrying a crew of 13 along with National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration scientists, to help bring him aboard.

‘We saw the unusual object on the horizon,’ Northwest Explorer captain Adam White later recalled. ‘We blasted our horn a couple times.’

Dramatic video captured the vessel approaching the tiny skiff and its lone survivor.

Crew members threw Aghnaanga a line and gradually pulled the overturned boat closer before maneuvering the exhausted teenager into a rescue basket and lifting him to safety.

‘I mean, that’s one tough kid,’ White said.

But even as rescuers celebrated finding him alive, Aghnaanga was trying to tell them what had happened to his relatives.

‘Through the teeth chattering, [Aghnaanga] had mentioned that his brother was still under the skiff,’ White told KTUU.

The teenager was suffering symptoms of hypothermia after his ordeal.

Crew members immediately wrapped him in blankets, placed hot packs around him and kept him talking as the Northwest Explorer headed toward Nome, where he could finally be reunited with his family.

For White, the mission left an emotional mark long after the teenager had been pulled aboard.

‘When you look into a family member’s eyes… there’s gratitude, but sorrow at the same time,’ the captain said.

‘I know I became overwhelmed with it so I had to go hide in my room for a minute.’

Back on shore, Aghnaanga’s relatives had been anxiously following radio transmissions from the rescue operation.

‘We all cried and jumped for joy when the captain announced on the radio, ‘We found a kid, he’s alive, he’s alive,’ Walker previously recalled.

But their jubilation was immediately tempered by the realization that Aghnaanga had been found alone.

‘Then we asked, ‘Where’s the rest of them?”

The Northwest Explorer later recovered the bodies of Kulowiyi and Rookok, bringing a devastating end to the search for the other two fishermen.

A GoFundMe created for Aghnaanga and his family has since raised $48,000.

The money is intended to help cover funeral expenses and support the family as the teenage survivor recovers.

Former TV Pilot Zoey Tur Says Engine Failed in Chatsworth Crash

0

Veteran helicopter pilot and former television reporter Zoey Tur has offered an early, sobering assessment of the fatal Chatsworth helicopter crash, pointing to what they believe may have been a critical mechanical emergency.

Tur, a pioneering figure in Los Angeles aerial news coverage, said audio associated with the crash appears to contain indications of an engine failure in the moments before the helicopter went down.

“If you listen, you could hear the low rotor RPM annunciator horn going off. You could also hear the engine rev down. This was an engine failure, and slow response into entering an auto -rotation by PiC. No survivors,” they posted after the crash.

Along with then-spouse Marika Gerrard, Tur became a celebrated presence in Los Angeles TV news, using a helicopter to document many of the region’s most consequential breaking-news events from above.

The pair’s aerial reporting included the first live television coverage of a high-speed police chase, the 1992 assault on Reginald Denny during the Los Angeles riots, and O.J. Simpson’s widely watched 1994 low-speed Bronco pursuit.

Tur later received multiple Emmy Awards and Edward R. Murrow Awards for journalism and aerial reporting.

Tur’s comments come as federal authorities launch their investigation into the Chatsworth helicopter crash. The National Transportation Safety Board is leading the inquiry, while the Federal Aviation Administration is expected to review regulatory and licensing matters.

Authorities have not yet identified an official cause of the crash.

Expert Says Selena Gomez Showed Emmy Nerves Without Benny Blanco

Selena Gomez appeared uneasy on the Emmys red carpet, a body language expert said, suggesting that her smile masked signs of discomfort.

Selena Gomez attended the Emmys without her husband of nearly a year, Benny Blanco. The actor and singer smiled for photographers while displaying her shimmering gold gown, but a body language expert said she appeared somewhat uncomfortable despite her poised red-carpet appearance. Here is what the expert noticed.

Selena Gomez attended the Emmys without Benny Blanco

Gomez was at the ceremony both as a star and executive producer of the Emmy-nominated Only Murders in the Building. Inbaal Honigman, a body language expert with Casino.org, said Gomez did not seem fully at ease.

“Selena appears to be missing Benny on the red carpet, as her body language lacks some of the natural joy and confidence we often see when her husband is by her side,” she explained. “Her shoulders curve slightly forwards, almost as if she’s trying to shield herself, while picking at her fingers can be a telltale sign of nerves or unease.”

Honigman said Gomez’s smile, while present, also appeared to communicate a sense of discomfort.

“But Selena’s face gives away the most,” she said. “Even when she smiles, her eyes remain wide and rounded rather than narrowing into happy, smiling eyes. Her cheeks don’t lift and round in the way we would expect from a truly joyful smile.”

He shared how he wants to celebrate his first anniversary with Selena Gomez

After the Emmys, Gomez and Blanco are set to celebrate their first wedding anniversary. Blanco previously said he was surprised to discover that they would mark the occasion by eating a slice of their wedding cake.

“I didn’t even know this was a thing. Her grandma, her nana, told me this,” he said on Today With Jenna & Sheinelle. When we were at the wedding, she was like, ‘You gotta save the cake.’ And I was like, ‘What do you mean save the cake?’ And she was like, ‘You gotta save the cake.’ And I was like, ‘Why?’ She was like, ‘You have to eat it.’”

Still, he admitted that he has doubts that it will taste good after a year.

“So yes, we have six slices left. I hope you only have to eat it for the first year,” he said, adding, “I don’t want to be eating this thing on year six. I didn’t even wrap it correctly. It’s probably furry now.”

Beyond sharing cake, Blanco said that he and his wife hope to relax in celebration of their big day.

“We wanted to just be chill,” he said, noting, “We’ve been traveling so much. We’ve been all over. I haven’t been in my own bed in 4 months. And we’re, like, chillers. We want to chill. I don’t know. Maybe we’ll watch our speeches or something like that.”

Google AI Helps ID Drunk Driver After Bicyclist Hit-and-Run

A Texas man has been jailed in Wisconsin after allegedly striking a bicyclist while driving drunk and then leaving the scene, according to Badger State law enforcement.

Duan K. Maiden II, 32, is charged with hit-and-run resulting in great bodily harm, intoxicated use of a vehicle resulting in great bodily harm, fleeing or attempting to elude an officer, and resisting or obstructing an officer, authorities in two counties said.

The crash happened Sept. 3 at the intersection of Western Avenue and Division Road in Jackson, a small town on the far northwestern edge of the Milwaukee metropolitan area, according to a criminal complaint filed in Washington County.

A witness told investigators Maiden was driving “the striking vehicle” eastbound at a high speed and “never stopped for the stop sign” at the intersection, the charging document states.

“Witness 1 stated that the car then struck the bicyclist in the intersection, and kept going eastbound on Western Avenue,” the complaint says. “Witness 1 described the vehicle as a gray sedan.”

The bicyclist suffered a compound leg fracture as well as fractures to his pelvis and spine or neck, law enforcement said.

A sheriff’s deputy recovered several pieces of plastic vehicle debris from the scene and located serial numbers on them, according to the complaint. The deputy used Google AI to determine the vehicle was likely a Nissan Versa.

Later that night, dispatch connected investigators with a man who said he had been riding in the vehicle Maiden was driving when the hit-and-run occurred, the complaint alleges.

Earlier that day, Maiden and the man had a break in their canvassing work while waiting for another assignment, according to the charging document. During that time, the man said he watched Maiden purchase a bottle of vodka and take a drink from it. The two then ate pizza and listened to music for more than an hour, the complaint says.

“[T]here was a period of time while in the parking lot when the defendant left the car while Witness 4 remained inside, and the defendant was out of sight,” the charging document reads. “Witness 4 stated that besides the defendant’s driving behavior, the defendant did not appear intoxicated.”

That was at first, the man told law enforcement.

Later, the man said, and roughly 1 mile before the crash, Maiden “started acting weird,” according to the complaint.

“The defendant would begin driving in the opposite lane, and Witness 4 would have to tell the defendant that there was another car ahead of them,” the charging document goes on. “[T]hey were coming up to a stop sign, and the defendant pulled up yielding, failing to stop at the stop sign. The defendant then sped up.”

Then, when the bicyclist appeared, “their vehicle was too far in motion to stop,” the man said, estimating they were traveling at 35 to 40 mph, according to law enforcement. That’s “when the defendant struck the bicyclist with the front passenger area of their vehicle,” the man said.

The passenger, who does not drive, said he reasoned with Maiden to stop and call police, to no avail.

“The defendant said, ‘naw man,’ and that ‘he’s ok,'” the complaint reads. “The defendant then continued driving from the scene.”

Eventually, the other man got out and called 911.

“The information we got from the passenger, he was telling him you hit that person we need to stop and the driver said we’re not stopping we’re going,” a Washington County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson told Milwaukee-based ABC affiliate WISN. “It’s hard to believe that someone could do that to another human.”

Eventually, with the other man’s help, law enforcement identified Maiden while he was driving, and after some effort, convinced him to pull over, according to the charging document.

Later, authorities performed field sobriety tests and Maiden failed half of them, law enforcement officials claim. A breath test returned a preliminary blood alcohol level of 0.268%, or more than three times the legal limit in Wisconsin, according to the complaint.

During an interview, the defendant said he “works for a company that canvasses neighborhoods for the upcoming Wisconsin governor race,” according to the charging document. Maiden also recounted the time period during which he left the other canvasser alone in the parked car.

“The defendant stated that they were there for one hour, the complaint goes on. “[Maiden] went into the store and bought 4 BuzzBallz alcoholic drinks, which he believed to be about 15% ABV. The defendant admitted to consuming all four BuzzBallz, and did it outside the presence of Witness 4.”

Maiden allegedly said he did not recall hitting anyone, or the other man telling him about the bicyclist.

“The defendant did state that he felt terrible and if he knew he hit someone, he would have stopped,” the complaint concludes.

The post Deputies use Google AI on vehicle debris left at scene to trace drunk driver after hit-and-run leaves bicyclist injured, police say first appeared on Law & Crime.

Illinois Mom Fixated on Lindsay Clancy Sang After Allegedly Killing Son

Walsh, 40, had reportedly become fixated on the Lindsay Clancy case before allegedly killing her young son. During questioning by investigators, she allegedly sang a song from the classic film “The Wizard of Oz,” according to reports.

Court documents obtained by The Sun state that Walsh told officers she believed Barrett was the “devil” and the “anti-Christ.” She then allegedly sang “Follow the Yellow Brick Road,” a well-known number from “The Wizard of Oz.”

She faces three counts of first-degree murder in connection with Barrett Walsh’s death. The 2-year-old was found unresponsive, hanging from a rafter in the basement of the family’s suburban Chicago residence.

Barrett’s two siblings reportedly found him on Sept. 1 after arriving home from school. Officers who responded to the home found a neighbor attempting CPR on the boy.

As detectives interviewed Walsh, she allegedly launched into a rambling outburst and sang her own rendition of “Follow the Yellow Brick Road,” according to reports.

Walsh’s attorney, Andrea Lyon, said her client was experiencing psychosis and dismissed claims that Walsh’s interest in the Clancy case was linked to the alleged killing.

“She was psychotic. And this is not a first-degree murder,” Lyon told reporters.

Before the killing, Walsh had become “very invested” in the Clancy murder trial, which involved the Massachusetts mother accused of killing her three children.

Gun Found in New Principal’s Car at Baldwin Middle-Senior High School

0

An anonymous report prompted police to search the vehicle of Baldwin Middle-Senior High School’s new principal, Michael Smith, where they discovered a loaded firearm. Smith had recently taken over the role following the arrest of the school’s previous principal.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The principal of Baldwin Middle-Senior High School was reassigned Tuesday after a gun was found in his vehicle while it was parked on campus, Duval County Public Schools officials said during an afternoon news conference.

Superintendent Dr. Christopher Bernier said Duval County Schools Police received an anonymous tip suggesting that Principal Michael Smith had a firearm in his car on school grounds. Bernier instructed officers to investigate, and Police Chief Short said a search uncovered a loaded gun secured in a holster inside the vehicle’s center console.

Smith received a criminal citation and has been moved to an assignment away from the Baldwin campus while both a criminal probe and an internal district investigation continue.

“Although this situation does not appear to have involved any intent to cause harm, firearms on a school campus are both dangerous and illegal,” the district wrote in an email to teachers obtained by First Coast News.

Beginning Wednesday, three senior district leaders — including Bernier — will rotate in to serve as interim principals at the school. District officials said they will later begin the process of selecting a permanent replacement.

“One of the things we believe we need to do is have a conversation with the Baldwin community about the hiring process before we go into a full-blown search to look for a replacement,” Bernier said.

Smith was appointed to the position following the June arrest of the now-former Baldwin principal, Michael Townsend.

Townsend was charged with failure to report child abuse relating to the case against a now-former Baldwin teacher, James Mulvey. The school district informed families that Townsend was resigning, effective June 30.

According to the arrest report, Townsend was aware of allegations that Mulvey was having an inappropriate relationship with a student, and a teacher who had brought the concerns to Townsend felt “blown off” and “not taken seriously.” As a school leader, police wrote Townsend is required to immediately report “suspicions of child abuse, neglect, or sexual abuse.”

He has yet to be arraigned in court.

Car Influencer Speeding in Crash That Killed Hooters Calendar Model

Car influencer James Wehr was allegedly speeding when his McLaren supercar crashed into a tree in Irvine, California, killing him and 22-year-old Hooters calendar model Alexis “Lexi” Kramer.

Wehr, 27, was on a late-night drive with Kramer on Saturday when he lost control of the 2019 McLaren. The vehicle struck a tree and split in half.

The wreckage caught fire shortly afterward, killing both Wehr and Kramer at about 12.20am.

An Irvine Police Department spokesperson told KTLA 5 that Newport Beach Police had pulled Wehr over before the fatal collision and issued him a warning.

“We believe that speed was a factor in this,” Irvine Police Department Officer Ziggy Azarcon told the outlet.

“The vehicle took off at a high rate of speed on Culver Drive and lost control, striking a curb and then a tree, splitting the vehicle in two and catching it on fire.”

Police also confirmed to TMZ that evidence indicated Wehr was behind the wheel when the McLaren crashed. Authorities said a woman was seated in the passenger seat, rather than the driver’s seat.

The crash investigation is continuing, and authorities have not yet determined the official cause of the collision.

Kramer’s family identified her as the second person killed in the crash. They said the pair met through Instagram before Wehr flew her from Florida to California.

According to the young woman’s family, Wehr had told Lexi that he was divorcing his wife Emma, the California Post reported.

‘[Wehr] talked to [Lexi] every day, all the time and finally got her to fly out to California to come see him,’ a family member told the outlet.

The young bartender, whose Instagram bio identified her as a 2026 Hooters calendar girl, shared Wehr’s passion for cars and motorcycles and had attended his hugely popular auto show earlier that day.

‘She loved the car community, so it’s such a tragedy that that’s what ended her,’ the family member said.

‘As you can imagine, this was very shocking and hard. She was kind and funny and charismatic and I’ve had so many people reach out and share their wonderful experiences with Lexi.’

Lexi and Wehr met for the first time and had gone to dinner at Nobu as well as drinks at the Pendry Hotel hours before the crash, the relative told the Post.

Wehr was identified by family and friends on social media following the deadly events.

Floods of emotional tributes poured in for the car influencer, described as an ‘icon’ in the car community.

The Today presenter, currently on maternity leave, announced her exit in a Wednesday afternoon statement. “Words can’t express how grateful I am to our viewers for letting me into your homes to be part of your morning routine. Without you, there is no Today show,” she said. (Pictured with former Today co-host Karl Stefanovic)

'Together with 60 Minutes, I've spent my time at Nine chasing stories, travelling and reporting from all over the world, interviewing some incredible and inspiring people from all walks of life,' Sarah said

“Together with 60 Minutes, I’ve spent my time at Nine chasing stories, travelling and reporting from all over the world, interviewing some incredible and inspiring people from all walks of life,” Sarah said.

“It takes a special kind of crazy to wake up at the hours we do but it’s so much easier when the team feels like family. I’ll miss you all dearly.”

Nine Executive Director of News and Current Affairs, Fiona Dear, said: ‘Sarah has been an integral part of the Today team, bringing warmth, energy and first-class journalism to the program each morning.

‘It takes enormous skill to front three-and-a-half hours of live television every day, and Sarah did it with sharp journalistic instincts.

‘We thank her for everything she brought to Today, and wish Sarah and her family all the very best.’

Her departure from Nine comes after the shock exit of her former Today co-host Karl Stefanovic in June.

Karl abruptly resigned from the network after his interview with far-right figure Tommy Robinson, which he uploaded to his podcast, The Karl Stefanovic Show, to YouTube, only to delete it hours later after facing backlash.

In a statement to The Daily Mail, Channel Nine said that Stefanovic could not continue working at the network while also hosting his podcast.

It also comes after the exit of Today weatherman Tim Davies, who after seven years in the role, announced his departure last month.

Dancing With the Stars Premiere Hit by Live Voting Outage

The season 35 premiere of Dancing with the Stars hit an unexpected snag on Tuesday night after voting for the live competition crashed just minutes after the broadcast began.

Co-host Julianne Hough, 38, was forced to address the technical problem after the evening’s second performance, informing viewers that online voting was temporarily unavailable.

Fans attempting to submit their votes through ABC’s website were met with an error page displaying the message: “Error 503 Too Many Variants.”

By 8:45 p.m. ET, Alfonso Ribeiro delivered a more definitive update, telling the live audience that online voting would remain offline for the rest of the night.

“For tonight, and tonight only, we are throwing out online votes,” Ribeiro announced.

Viewers were still able to support their favorite Dancing with the Stars contestants by text message, although the abrupt change may have left some fans unable to make their voices heard.

The voting outage was revealed soon after former Bachelorette contestant Tyler Cameron wrapped up his routine with DWTS professional Sharna Burgess.

“A quick update for everyone who is voting at home,” Hough said a little more than 25 minutes into the live episode. “This is coming through live right now: Voting on ABC is currently down live.”

In its place, she urged viewers to ‘please make sure that you guys are texting for everyone.’

‘We will keep you posted as the night goes on,’ she added.

Ribeiro gave an update around 20 minutes later and said DWTS was ‘still having online voting issues.’

After he said that online votes wouldn’t be counted for the first half of the two-part premiere, Hough tried to put a more positive spin on the malfunction.

‘Did we break it with the voting? This is kind of rad!’ she said.

‘We’re breaking stuff around here,’ Ribeiro joked.

Fans located in the US and its territories can vote via SMS by texting a keyword with the name of the male celebrity performing on Tuesday’s show to 21523.

Usually, viewers text the first name of the star they’re voting for, but the presence of Connor Wood and Connor Leavitt has forced them to text ‘Connor W’ or ‘Connor L’ to specify whom they’re casting votes for.

Wood is known for being a TikTok star, while Leavitt is the husband of The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives star Whitney Leavitt.

Viewers are allowed to cast up to 10 votes per couple per voting method for each show, though only texting will be an option for part one of the premiere.

Notably, only the male celebrities will be performing with their professional dancer partners on Tuesday’s episode, while the female celebrities will debut their dancing skills on Wednesday night’s episode.

During the broadcast, Ribeiro clarified that the couple with the ‘lowest combined total scores and votes’ would be eliminated at the end of each night.

On social media, some viewers vented about online votes being thrown out.

‘With the vote system broken it doesn’t seem fair to eliminate anyone,’ one fan suggested.

After it was announced that Connor Leavitt had been eliminated at the end of the broadcast, some rushed to blame his failure on the voting glitch.

‘I’m so sad for Conner Leavitt [sic] and I blame the glitch in the voting system because I tried to vote multiple times and they never went through!!!! JUSTICE FOR THE LEAVITTS,’ wrote one furious viewer.

Canadian viewers were particularly upset by the change of plans, as they had been able to vote online but were excluded from voting via text.

‘No online voting means that Canadians just don’t get a say tonight,’ read one post with a gif of Steve Carell on The Office saying, ‘This is the worst.’

Another Canadian fan wrote, ‘wdym the website worked for me and i could vote but now they’re not counting any of the website votes and i can’t vote via text in canada.’

Dancing with the Stars returns with the second night of its two-part season 35 premiere on Wednesday at 8pm ET on ABC, as well as streaming on Disney+. Episodes can also be viewed a day late on Hulu.
