Savannah Guthrie’s Exciting Comeback on ‘Today’ Show

Savannah Guthrie has returned to her spot on the Today show after taking a brief hiatus to work on her new Wordle-inspired project.

“I’m glad to be back,” Guthrie, 54, expressed during the Today show’s Monday broadcast on August 10 while sharing a moment with cohost Craig Melvin. She graciously welcomed the audience, thanking them for “beginning your week with us.”

During the lighthearted exchange, Melvin mentioned the show’s absence was felt during Guthrie’s assignment and added some humor related to the $905 million Powerball jackpot.

He jestingly remarked, “You might not see me again if I strike it big with the Powerball—I’m playing tonight. If it’s a win for me, SG, it’s been a wonderful journey.”

In related developments, Savannah Guthrie is set to embark on an exciting new project, a game show inspired by the popular New York Times puzzle, Wordle. Meanwhile, her family is still dealing with the mystery of her mother Nancy Guthrie, who has gone missing. NBC revealed plans for this Wordle-themed show on Monday, May 11, which offers a thrilling challenge of deciphering a five-letter word in six attempts or fewer.

Guthrie announced last month that she would be taking time away from the morning show to work on the network’s new Wordle game show, executive produced by Jimmy Fallon alongside The New York Times.

“We’re going to shoot the whole season, and we’re super excited,” she said on July 16. “Cannot wait for everyone to see it.”

Guthrie’s brief step back from Today came amid the ongoing search for her mother, Nancy, who was reported missing in Arizona in February. Nearly six months into the investigation, Guthrie issued a new plea to her mom’s kidnappers.

“Our family is in agony. We are in a nightmare that will not end. Nothing about our situation has changed. … The world can be a cruel and unforgiving place, and I know that you have tried to do things the right way,” she said in an Instagram video on July 27. “So I’m asking you, begging you to do the right thing now. Make the right choice. Help us find her. Tell us where to look for her. I truly believe it is never too late to do the right thing. … Please make the right choice.”

She captioned the clip, “Bring her home 💛.”

Savannah Guthrie Returns to ‘Today’ After ‘Much-Deserved’ 4-Day Break

Savannah Guthrie is back on Today after a four-day absence from the show. “So glad that Savannah’s back in Studio 1A,” Today cohost Craig Melvin said, kicking off the Tuesday, July 14 broadcast. “Had some much-deserved time off.” Guthrie, 54, was all smiles for her return, sporting a red and pink floral dress. The journalist […]

Days later, Guthrie shared another emotional post about her family’s heartache.

“This is our beautiful Mom,” she captioned a photo of Nancy, 84, on August 1. “Six months ago, someone took her out of her bed in the dead of nightWe have lived every moment, every breath, and every heartbeat in agony and despair ever since. Every day, we wake up and try to be strong and go on because that’s what our joyful and resilient Mom taught us to do, but make no mistake — our hearts are in ruins.”

Guthrie added that her loved ones would “never stop looking for answers,” reminding followers that “the reward is available” for information about Nancy’s whereabouts.

“We will always be hoping and praying and believing in the best of our world — in spite of circumstance,” she added. “This is what our faith makes possible. Please. Bring her home.”

Guthrie previously took time away from the Today show after her mother disappeared, returning in April. Since then, she has made rare remarks about the case on camera.

“I don’t have any comment on this story. I’m not involved in our coverage, but I can’t pretend I’m not here,” she said in June, referencing reports that an alleged ransom note alluded to Nancy’s death. “Since I am, I just wanted to take the opportunity to ask people — really, to beg people — to come forward.”

She added, “Somebody knows something. This is a news story today that is on your radar, because this is the life my sister lives, that I live, that my brother lives and our extended families live, that our children live every day. We are in agony. We cannot be in peace.”

Billy is co-founder of a company specialising in biohacking and regenerative medicine, with clinics in London, Canada and Greece.

In October they looked more loved up then ever as they made their red carpet debut at the UK premiere of Venom: The Last Dance, just weeks after going Instagram official.

The pair had previously jetted off on a lavish holiday to Santorini and Arabella took the opportunity to share a photo of them together on social media for the first time, captioned: ‘Making memories with you’.

The couple had reportedly been dating secretly for months in private, with sources telling The Sun at the time: ‘Arabella has made no secret of wanting to find the one and it looks like Billy could be that man.’

‘He’s clever, handsome and has a jet setting lifestyle, which she loves. It was a big step putting him on her socials – she didn’t tag him but she’s happy for people to see her happy and in love.’

Arabella previously confessed she was looking to find true love and her ‘happily ever after’, wanting to get married and have kids.

She told The Sun on Sunday: ‘Last year was probably my unluckiest when it came to finding the one. I’ve been so unlucky in love. I’ve dated people I thought at the time were the one, which was a mistake I’ve since learnt from.’

‘What I’ve learnt from dating last year is that you think you know someone but you don’t really know them at all. I dated people that perhaps, looking back, weren’t best suited to me.’

She added: ‘I’ve been fortunate enough to hang out in Hollywood circles but I have still not found love. I’ve never felt more ready to settle down.’

‘All I’ve ever wanted is true love and that fairytale dream. I’m 32, I want to get married and have babies.’

‘I haven’t got lots of time left and I know more about myself now than ever. This is my last shot to find my happily ever after.’

The start of the year saw Arabella face a string of heartbreaks, after first being dumped by footballer Rúben Dias following a New Year’s break.

The blonde beauty and the ex Manchester City player were at the heart of romance rumours for several months and were said to have begun dating in September last year.

In November, The Sun reported that Arabella had been regularly jetting from her home in Ibiza to spend time with Rúben in the UK.

They added the Portuguese hunk had been ‘showering’ the stunner with gifts, but that the couple were trying to keep their romance at the time under wraps.

They were also seen at Manchester Airport on New Year’s Day, heading off on holiday together.

However, Ruben reportedly dumped Arabella soon after they returned to the UK, leaving her heartbroken.

She then appeared on Love Island All Stars in January, and struck up a connection with Adam Maxted, but they split just five weeks after leaving the villa.

Hilary Duff Honors Late Ex Aaron Carter at Philly Concert

In a heartfelt onstage tribute, Hilary Duff paid homage to her late ex-boyfriend, Aaron Carter, evoking fond memories of their past.

Making a poignant fashion statement during her Lucky Me World Tour in Philadelphia on Sunday, the pop sensation donned a vintage T-shirt adorned with the image of the former child star, who had faced numerous challenges throughout his life.

The T-shirt showcased a youthful Carter in the early stages of his career, captured nostalgically wearing jean overalls paired with a white and red shirt.

Duff and Carter’s youthful romance began in 2000 when they were both merely 13, marking the start of a relationship that would see its share of ups and downs.

For three tumultuous years, the couple oscillated between being together and apart, eventually parting ways due to a widely publicized love triangle involving Lindsay Lohan.

“I just got a little bored, so I went and I started getting to know Lindsay, dating Lindsay,” the “I Want Candy” singer admitted on CNBC’s “The Big Idea with Donny Deutsch” in 2005, adding that Duff “really got her heart broken,” which he felt “sorry” about.

After the “Lizzie McGuire” alum grew up and started a family years later, Carter continued to express regret over how he had treated her.

“I’ll spend the rest of my life trying to better myself to get back to her,” he wrote in a since-deleted tweet in 2014. “I don’t care what ANY of you think.”

The “Aaron’s Party (Come Get It)” crooner eventually moved on and got engaged to Melanie Martin in 2020. They welcomed a son named Prince in 2021.

However, the former child star — who was the younger brother of Backstreet Boys member Nick Carter — struggled with addiction and family trauma in the final years of his life.

He was found dead on November 5, 2022, in a bathtub at his California home at age 34.

“Aaron worked very hard towards the end of his life in recovery, to be a good father and to make amends with his family,” his rep told Page Six at the time.

Shortly after his death, Duff, 38, paid tribute to her ex in a sweet Instagram post.

“For Aaron- I’m deeply sorry that life was so hard for you and that you had to struggle in-front of the whole world,” she penned. “You had a charm that was absolutely effervescent … boy did my teenage self love you deeply.”

Duff concluded her message by telling Aaron to “rest easy” and “sending love” to his grieving family.

She also continued to defend Aaron after his tragic passing. In November 2022, Duff publicly slammed the publisher of the “Crush on You” singer’s posthumous memoir, which claims the former flames “lost [their] virginity to each other” when they were pre-teens.

“It’s really sad that within a week of Aaron’s death, there’s a publisher that seems to be recklessly pushing a book out to capitalize on this tragedy without taking appropriate time or care to fact check the validity of his work,” the “Younger” actress told the Daily Mail.

“To water down Aaron’s life story to what seems to be unverified click-bait for profit is disgusting,” she continued.

“In no way do I condone shedding any light on what is so obviously an uninformed, heartless, money grab.”

Husband Believes Missing American Woman in Grenada Drowned After Swimming Offshore

A North Carolina woman who vanished during a Caribbean getaway with friends may have tragically drowned, her husband revealed.

Elizabeth “Liz” Waddell, 43, disappeared from Grenada on July 22. According to her husband, her last known location was in the ocean, spotted by a group of jet skiers.

Cailen Waddell, Liz’s husband, provided an update on FindLiz.com. He mentioned that the jet skiers attempted for several minutes to persuade her to board a jet ski instead of staying in the water.

Cailen detailed, “They spent five to ten minutes engaging with her, encouraging her to accompany them back to shore on a jet ski rather than remain in the open sea. Reportedly, she assured them, ‘I’m a good swimmer,’ and gave a thumbs-up in response.”

He has been releasing information on his wife’s case using the website her family created.

The conversation with the jet skiers allegedly happened around 5:30 p.m. on July 22, the day she was reported missing to the Royal Grenada Police Force.

“I am grieving her absence and the loss of her in my daily life right now, understanding that it is incredibly likely she is gone and hoping that the investigation will offer more clarity as to what happened,” Waddell said.

Waddell traveled to Grenada to join search efforts to find her two days after she was reported missing. He returned to the U.S. a week later, following an unsuccessful search.

Surveillance video from a nearby Airbnb property recorded the possible moment Liz entered the water that day; a person appearing to be Waddell is seen walking near a pool and holding a towel.

Next, she appears to jump in the water off of a dock, then swims out of frame.

Despite drones, dive teams and dogs, search efforts by law enforcement for any trace of Liz have come up dry.

Police are still treating her disappearance as a missing persons case. Her husband is still holding on to hope.

“If Liz walked out of the jungle tomorrow and said, ‘Hey, where’s my passport?’ I’d not be surprised and obviously get on a plane and go get her in a heartbeat,” he said.

Renowned Climbs End Tragically: Record-Breaker Dies at 30

In a tragic turn of events, the climbing community mourns the loss of Jake Whisenant, renowned for his lightning-fast ascent of Yosemite’s legendary El Capitan. He passed away at the young age of 30.

The untimely accident took place in the Sierra Nevada on August 3rd, as confirmed by the Tulare County Sheriff’s Office.

Details surrounding Whisenant’s passing, a native of Mammoth Lakes in California, remain sparse at this time.

Tributes have been paid by the likes of Bailee Moore, Whisenant’s ‘lifelong friend.’ She wrote on social media: ‘It is with an impossibly heavy heart that I share the passing of my lifelong friend and confidant – Jacob Daniel Whisenant.

“Our family is utterly heartbroken at this news,” shared a family representative, “but we find comfort knowing Jake was in his element when he left us, amidst the breathtaking Sierra Nevada.”

Social media was overwhelmed with heartfelt condolences and tributes. “I’ve been in tears all day,” one message read, while another admirer added, “Jake was truly one of my most cherished friends.”

‘Many of my favorite days in the mountains were with him. I so admired his strength, his grace, his thoughtfulness, and relentless optimism. Can’t believe he’s gone.’

Whisenant hit the headlines in October 2024 when, alongside Brant Hysell, he took on El Capitan – the iconic summit in Yosemite National Park, which stretches 3,000ft into the sky and features the world’s tallest exposed vertical face of granite.

Whisenant and Hysell scaled the Lurking Fear route in just two hours, 55 minutes and 32 seconds.

Together they broke the previous speed record – held by Yuji Hirayama and Nick Fowler – by nearly ten minutes.

‘A truly magical day that I’ll never forget,’ Whisenant said at the time on social media. ‘We both tapped into a flow state, fully committed to our plan, and most importantly, had an absolute blast on our favorite rock.

‘We had perfect weather for a shirtless ascent and the entire route to ourselves.’

The 30-year-old detailed many of his adventures on Instagram and as recently as July 15, Whisenant was posting pictures from his climbs in the Sierra Nevada.

Noah Fox, who scaled El Capitan with Whisenant in May, wrote on Instagram: ‘I had the privilege of climbing with Jake these past few months and these are memories I will cherish for the rest of my life.’

According to Fox, he and Whisenant ‘claimed an El Cap speed record’ and ‘climbed from the ground to the summit twice in 14:38.’

Moore responded to his tribute with a poignant message of her own. ‘Based on what I saw, he cherished that time too,’ she wrote. ‘Take care of yourself and never stop doing your thing in his honor.’

In one of Whisenant’s final social media posts, he documented a recent trip to the Kings-Kern Divide, a six-mile-long ridge in California, where he spent four days skiing, climbing and sleeping alone in ‘raw, rugged, classic High Sierra terrain.’

‘I had a truly life-enhancing experience out there, gaining confidence with each new ridge scrambled, basin traversed, and ski line descended,’ he wrote on social media at the time.

In a series of photos and videos, the 30-year-old showed off spectacular sunrises and scenery as well as his sleeping bag laid out beside a rock in the darkness.

‘By the end of my short stay, I summited [eight] 13,500+ peaks via new-to-me scrambles, and skied a fun line off each.

‘I felt sad hiking out, wishing for more time to explore and enjoy the simple mountain lifestyle.’

Allie Eklund Exposes McBee Jr.’s Messages: A Stand for Women’s Empowerment

Allie Eklund’s unexpected dive into the world of reality television through Bravo’s The McBee Dynasty: Real American Cowboys came with unforeseen twists. Initially unaware of the turbulence ahead, Eklund’s romance with series star Steven McBee Jr. came to a dramatic end as he falsely accused her of infidelity at Stagecoach. Forced to defend herself, Eklund released their text message exchanges, revealing McBee’s harsh and troubling tone. “I felt I had no choice,” Eklund confessed. “I needed to set the record straight against his unfounded accusations.”

Though Eklund and McBee have parted ways, they find themselves revisiting their early relationship days on The McBee Dynasty Season 3. Surprisingly, Eklund harbors no ill will towards McBee and his family. “Reflecting on those times, I am grateful for the experiences we shared,” Eklund shared. “We created some lasting memories.” As she watches the series unfold, she notes intriguing revelations. “Viewers will witness the moment my eyes opened to truths I believe were concealed from me,” Eklund hinted as the season advances.

Thankfully, Eklund stays occupied, steering clear of past turmoil. Her commitments to the family’s EEE Ranch consume much of her time, as does her burgeoning apparel and home goods line. Alongside her sister, Eklund has launched The EEE Mercantile, a passion project born out of a family hobby. “We realized our products had a demand,” Eklund explained. “The merchandise line is growing, and so is our dedicated team.”

Eklund recently visited the Decider studio for a candid conversation about the season, addressing a “confusing” rumor involving her former flame and his sister-in-law, Kacie Adkison, among other topics.

DECIDER: Allie, it seems like you’ve packed a lifetime of experiences since the filming of The McBee Dynasty Season 3. How do you view that time in retrospect?

ALLIE EKLUND: I feel like I’ve lived several lives in general, but definitely a few since filming [laughs]. I try to look back at everything with appreciation and gratitude for the experiences.

Your family has a successful private ranch: the EEE Ranch. Did that prepare you for visiting the McBee Farm?

One of the things that Steven and I originally aligned on was that we both grew up on the ranch and farm owned by our families. It was really important to both that we understood the lifestyle. My time on my family’s properties definitely prepared me for going into the McBee Ranch.

Allie Eklund, The McBee Dynasty

Brian Zak/ NY Post

True to your entrepreneurial spirit, you have an apparel and home goods line tied to your family’s ranch. Can you give us an update on how things are going?

That’s something that we’ve been working on for the last five or six years. I started my career in online sales and social selling. This passion project was a natural extension of that. This started as a hobby with my family—my sister specifically— but we quickly realized that there was a market for our product line. It has expanded, and our team is growing. We’re also located in a couple of ACE Hardware stores across Texas. It’s been very exciting.

I’m glad you have something to keep you busy with all the drama that’s been going on. A lot has been said about your team negotiating your contract before you even stepped foot onto the McBee farm to visit Steven. Looking back at everything that happened, do you feel vindicated?

Yes. Prior to my going to the McBee Farm, Steven had visited me in Nashville multiple times. We had been talking for a month or so at that point, but then he had to jump into filming. He wanted me to come visit. Naturally, with any new sort of business venture, I have a team that needed to be consulted. I had pre-existing businesses that I had to protect.

After Steven publicly accused you of cheating on him at Stagecoach, you took to Instagram and posted those text messages he sent you. Why did you feel it was important to share them on your social media?

He made his post about me prior to our having a real conversation. I had around $50,000 in brand deals that were on the line and in danger of being dropped because of all of the drama circulating online. I released the messages specifically responding to the claims that he made about me because I felt that it was important to show my side of the situation.

My hands were tied. I didn’t have any other option at that point. I had to respond and prove that his accusations were false. I would encourage my sisters, my friends, my family, or any other woman to defend themselves by any necessary means. Steven isn’t used to women sticking up for themselves. I had put my foot down. Looking back, I’m happy that I did.

People have called you an “opportunist,” but wouldn’t an opportunist have insisted on a percentage of Kacie’s and Steven’s tallow business? What do you have to say about that?

You would think so! [Laughs] If I were an opportunist, I could have easily had 25% of that business. I’d still be hanging around like Galyna [laughs]. Though, I don’t put my name on or back anything that I don’t believe in or don’t use myself. I don’t do business with people if I don’t know how they do business. So, it was really important to me to take the time to understand the business and how they operate. It was clear to me that they still had a lot of work to do [laughs].

I do not doubt that Kacie will be successful. I believe in her 100%, and I was happy to help. I planned multiple photo shoots and helped with multiple ads—all for free. Their business just wasn’t a fit for me.

You were blindsided—as was the audience—about the rumor Alli McBee allegedly started that Kacie’s and Steven’s relationship was “inappropriate.” Were that rumor and the text messages Steven sent Kacie the first big red flags you saw?

That rumor wasn’t the first red flag I saw, but it was really confusing for me and still is to this day. There were a lot of conversations surrounding that rumor. It’s not my place to reveal the details of that rumor, but it was pretty shocking.

I don’t see Alli as a dramatic person. I believe her because Alli doesn’t just pull things out of her ass. I was asked to get involved—along with Cole—and help mediate a conversation between Steven and Kacie, but I didn’t know the reason until after. My reaction that you saw in the episode was genuine. I was learning about everything going on in real time. To this day, that rumor is still pretty confusing to me. It’s pretty layered too.

Allie Eklund and the McBees, The McBee Dynasty

Paul Andrews/Bravo

It’s clear to me that you’re a genuine person. You really wanted this relationship with Steven to work. You were so excited to be in Vegas and to bond with the McBees. Do you have fond memories of your time with them?

I do. We made some great memories together. The trip to Vegas is one of them. It’s going to be the hardest episode to watch back because it was so special. I was so honored to be a part of this memory and to be at Cole’s and Kacie’s wedding.

After your experience on The McBee Dynasty, would you ever do more reality TV?

I always say that I’m open. I don’t consider myself closed off in any area of my life unless I am provoked or pushed. If someone offers an opportunity, I’m willing to listen. If you think about it, reality TV has been a natural extension of what I’ve already been building over the last 10 years with an iPhone camera, right? So, what’s another camera added? As long as I can continue building my businesses and working with my friends and family, then I’m open to cameras being there.

You don’t need to be married to be a Real Housewife these days, and I would personally love to see you on a new iteration of Real Housewives of Dallas someday. Would that interest you?

Oh my gosh, imagine that. If it was a natural extension of what I had going on, then that could be cool. Again, I am always open [laughs].

Lastly, what can you tease about the rest of the season?

You’re gonna see my eyes opening to some of the things that I believe were being hidden from me. We’re gonna watch that play out together [laughs]. It’ll be interesting to look back on.

Shake Shack Patrons Report Unexpected ‘No Tip’ Surcharge

0

It felt like a Shake Shack snafu for one customer.

In an age where “guilt tipping” seems to be spreading like wildfire, a frustrated patron has claimed that Shake Shack hiked up their bill after choosing not to tip at a self-service kiosk.

“My wife suggests that if you skip tipping at Shake Shack, they charge more per item,” said TikTok user B.D. Powell in a viral video that has garnered an impressive 4.2 million views.

Intrigued and skeptical, Powell decided to put this notion to the test. He ordered three classic shakes — vanilla, cookies & cream, and strawberry — at a Shake Shack located in Salt Lake City’s airport.

Efforts were made to reach out to Shake Shack for their take on the situation.

They cost $5.99 each according to the order screen.

The automated check-out then took them to the tip screen, where they were offered 15%, 18%, and 20% gratuity options as well as the choice to leave “no tip.”

But when Powell selected the latter — as is common at self-service outlets — all hell broke loose.

The screen displayed the message, “Uh Oh! There has been a pricing update on one or more of your cart items. Please review these changes in your cart.”

Upon obliging, the three shakes now showed prices of $6.49 each — total price increase of $1.50.

“Everything just went up fifty cents,” lamented Powell, who warned viewers to “not go” to Shake Shack.

Viewers were appalled over this alleged dirty tactic. “How is this legal?” wondered one commenter.

“It’s already too expensive to be worth it,” lamented another. “Forcing an extra charge is a deal breaker. I will never go there.”

“Tipping culture in the US has reached an intolerable toxic limit,” said a third.

However, others claimed that the customer had failed to establish a causal link with one Redditor noting, “you didn’t show what happens to the pricing when you do leave a tip.”

Meanwhile others accused Powell of skullduggery, claiming that he’d made a normal time-based price change look like a no-tip penalty.

“Pretty sure I saw this in a different sub, and people were saying the price increased because shake shack has a late night convenience fee past a certain time, and the people videoing timed the price change to make it look like a tip issue,” theorized one viewer.

Shake Shack has since denied that they were scam-burgering patrons.

“Thank you for bringing this to our attention,” they wrote in the TikTok comments, which have since been disabled. “This is not a Shake Shack policy, and we’re currently looking into it with our licensee, HMSHost, that operates the Salt Lake City airport location and kiosk system.”

New Parkinson’s Treatment Spurs Disturbing Side Effect: Uncontrollable Sexual Thoughts

0

What links the adrenaline rush of extreme sports, the endless scroll of doomscrolling, and conditions like addiction, Parkinson’s disease, and ADHD? The answer is dopamine. This essential neurotransmitter plays a significant role in regulating rewards, motivation, memory, and movement in the human body. But does its influence come with a price? Don’t miss the Insight episode titled “Chasing Dopamine” airing Tuesday, August 11, at 8:30 p.m. on SBS and available on SBS On Demand.

Glenn Peterson didn’t foresee the consequences when his doctor increased his medication dosage to manage his Parkinson’s disease symptoms.

“I developed some bad habits and some obsessions,” he candidly shared with Insight.

“Whenever I watched a horse race, I couldn’t resist betting on it, craving the exhilarating thrill of a win. On top of that, intrusive thoughts about sex — something I hadn’t struggled with before — started occupying my mind incessantly, and I just couldn’t shake them off.”

Diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease eight years ago, the 73-year-old began treatment with a dopamine precursor medication, a drug that transforms into dopamine in the brain to alleviate symptoms. Later, a dopamine agonist was added to enhance the treatment’s efficacy.

While the brain converts dopamine precursors directly into dopamine, dopamine-agonist medications mimic dopamine by activating dopamine receptors in the brain.

When combined, these drugs help treat the motor symptoms of Parkinson’s, a progressive brain disorder that damages dopamine-producing neurons, but research shows agonist drugs can cause the development of compulsive and addictive behaviours.

Glenn says when the dopamine-agonist medication was increased, he developed these behaviours.

Glenn’s wife, Robyn, also noticed the change when he started getting up in the middle of the night for hours at a time.

“I started asking what he was doing when he was awake at night,” Robyn said.

“And it started to come out that he was playing games … or he’d gamble on the poker machines on his iPad through the night or go onto porn sites.”

Glenn couldn’t understand why his mind seemed to turn against him. But when he revealed the extent of his newly developed compulsive behaviours to Robyn, she remembered the doctors had warned them that taking dopamine-agonist medication could bring on these side-effects.

They spoke to Glenn’s neurologist and decreased his dose, which put an end to the compulsive behaviours.

The link with dopamine and Parkinson’s disease

Dopamine is a neurotransmitter in the brain that is involved in several of the body’s functions, including movement — and contributes to our motivation and reward systems.

As it reinforces behaviours linked with reward or survival-based outcomes (such as eating food), it contributes to habit development — but is also why it plays a role in addiction.

Dopamine is not itself addictive, but the associated substances, behaviours or activities that cause the brain to release dopamine can be.

Karly Turner is a behavioural neuroscientist at the University of New South Wales, and says when someone has Parkinson’s, neurons that produce dopamine are degraded, which causes movement deficits.

“People with Parkinson’s are often able to move in a direction, but then when they go to change direction or change their action, they’ll get a bit stuck — and that’s because of the lack of these dopamine neurons,” Turner told Insight.

She says that research suggests that dopamine agonists, which act like dopamine in the brain, cause about 15 to 20 per cent of people with Parkinson’s to experience impulse control disorders.

“Different medications act in different ways … but when we take an oral medication, it is going to have that effect on the whole brain — not just the circuit that we’re going to try to target or the circuit that we’re having problems with,” she said.

“It is also important to talk to your doctor if you do experience any symptoms so that they can refine their approach.”

In addition to movement, Turner notes that dopamine often affects risk-taking.

“We see some people being more sensation seekers,” she said.

“They’re driven by this chase of reward and excitement and novelty, which are more likely to take risks, in these kinds of circumstances [such as skydiving].”

Seeking out risk

Gomeroi man Marley Nolan-Duncan says he chased dopamine through risky activities such as jumping off bridges into water and riding motorbikes when growing up in regional NSW, but they progressed into illegal ones.

“Not proud of it, about [the] crime side of things: stealing cars, breaking into houses,” the 43-year-old says.

“It was more that rush. I wasn’t a career criminal at all … but that rush — not the crime.”

a closeup of a man with short dark hair in a white office

But as he matured, “sensation seeker” Marley found another risky activity to seek dopamine through in his early 20s: skydiving, which he has kept up for the past 15 years.

“[On my first jump], I was looking down at the ground just going, ‘Holy crap. I’m about to jump out of a plane.’

“But a part of me was like, ‘I can’t wait’ … I was buzzing off that rush [when I landed] and I was like, ‘Where do I learn?'”

Five years ago, however, he broke his leg on a jump and was out of action for five months, which negatively impacted his mental health.

“I was pretty much bedbound [and] had a wheelchair,” he said.

He says he briefly turned to alcohol and abused painkillers to numb the absence of dopamine he got from skydiving. This affected his marriage with his wife Carolin, and he moved out for a period of time.

Eventually, he overcame the period of medication and alcohol abuse.

“I said to myself, ‘I never want to go back there again,'” he said.

“But being there, I’ve learned a lot about myself and about those situations and how to handle them a bit better and try and stay out of that space.”

He is back to skydiving but now also seeks dopamine in slower ways, such as playing with his children.

ADHD and dopamine

Zoe Mac has also been a dopamine chaser for most of her life — seeking the “quick fix” from sugary snacks, online games, op-shopping and doomscrolling.

The 52-year-old from the Gold Coast says receiving an ADHD diagnosis in her 40s made her realise that might be a prominent factor in her dopamine seeking.

“I started learning more about [ADHD] — digging even deeper on the dopamine journey,” she says.

“From there I was able to be so much kinder to myself because I wasn’t flawed. My brain has a different makeup.”

a closeup shot of a middle aged blonde woman wearing a pink cardigan

Anastasia Hronis, a clinical psychologist at the University of Technology Sydney, says that ADHD was initially thought to be related to an underproduction or deficit in dopamine, but research now shows it is more complicated than that.

“[It is] actually a dysregulation in the way that dopamine is activated, particularly in relation to the prefrontal cortex, so the part of our brain that helps us make decisions and plan — also the reward centres,” she said.

“And a lot of the people, at least that I have seen clinically who present with an addiction, may often actually have undiagnosed ADHD, and they throughout their life have found ways to kind of regulate themselves when they have a brain that is in some ways dysregulated.”

The psychologist said that although dopamine is neither good nor bad, the way we activate dopamine can make a difference.

“If we are putting effort into the task that we are doing, and we’re having that dopamine reward and activation at the end of that, that is a healthier way — compared to things that are very quick and easy, and don’t require any effort.”

She says that because boredom may feel “uncomfortable”, we can be “particularly vulnerable to perhaps being pulled to some of those more dopamine-driven behaviours” such as reaching for sugary treats, binge-watching television or scrolling on the phone.

Zoe now has a healthier relationship with craving and has done two 30-day “dopamine detoxes” when she avoided “anything that could hook your attention” — including sugary snacks, online shopping and online games.

She said she was “deathly bored” in the first week and that it highlighted how strong her cravings for her phone had been.

“My hands were almost like, ‘Please, pick up the phone and play a game,” she said.

“It took so much willpower.”

‘The perfect storm’

Turner says that scrolling is “the perfect storm for having a dopamine release” because you don’t know what’s coming next, but the “algorithm is making sure that the stuff you’re seeing is the stuff you like”.

“Things that have previously been rewarded … things that have triggered dopamine for you in the past are the things that are probably popping up in your scroll in an unpredictable manner.”

Hroni says there has been “a lot of sensationalisation” around dopamine detoxes on social media in recent years — some heralding 24-hour fixes — but that psychologists would typically recommend around one month as a period of abstinence from something.

“That said, if someone has somewhat more of an addictive tendency to something that is much more intense, it can sometimes take up to three months or more for the brain to kind of recalibrate and come back to a level of homeostasis.”

The financial cost of dopamine

Like Zoe, Steph Thompson, 32, used to also seek dopamine hits through scrolling and online shopping. To curb these cravings and to save money, she and her husband did a no-buy challenge a few years ago.

It involved avoiding unnecessary purchases whenever possible for two years.

“It’s a lot of little things, and it really ended up being a lot of dopamine chasing,” the Melbourne content creator says.

“If you had a bad day, let’s get takeout. If you’re wanting to feel better in some kind of way, there was always a way that money could fill that void. And it just became a pattern of little things over time, much like social media usage.”

a young woman with red hair sitting cross legged on a couch scrolling on her phone

Steph says that watching her spending closely made her analyse her everyday habits, and the role dopamine played in them.

“I kind of started to realise that what was driving me to spend was also driving me to scroll.”

‘Changed completely’

Glenn believes the compulsive behaviours he was experiencing might have continued or become worse had it not been for his wife.

“It really was an eye-opener of what this additional dose could do to a person,” Robyn said.

“Changed him completely.”

Defense accuses prosecution of shocking ‘hot mic’ moment on Friday

In a dramatic courtroom incident last week, defense attorney Kevin Reddington leveled a serious accusation against the prosecution. He claimed that during the display of autopsy photographs of Lindsay Clancy, someone on the prosecution team was caught on a hot mic instructing to “shut her up.” This incident instantly caught the attention of the courtroom.

After a brief morning recess, as the court convened, Reddington took the opportunity to bring the matter to light before the jury re-entered the room, signaling that he had a significant point to address.

Although the judge suggested handling the issue quietly through a sidebar, Reddington firmly declined. “No, I don’t want to do it on sidebar,” he insisted, underscoring the weight of his allegations.

“They were caught on a hot mic saying ‘shut her up’ during the playing of the autopsy,” Reddington exclaimed, directing his accusations directly at the prosecutors with a pointed gesture.

Following this explosive declaration, both sets of attorneys were immediately called to the judge’s bench. The ensuing sidebar discussion was shrouded in secrecy as the courtroom’s sound system ensured their conversation remained confidential.

On Thursday, medical examiner Dr Kimberley Springer testified about carrying out Callan’s autopsy. Graphic autopsy photos were also shown to the jury.

During her testimony, Clancy broke down – sobbing loudly and uncontrollably at the defense table.

Families Stranded and Fighting to Escape Raging Wildfire Engulfing England’s Parched Landscape

In an intense heatwave, motorists found themselves in a dire situation as they had to leave their vehicles behind and trek several miles on a main road due to a significant wildfire near the New Forest yesterday.

The blaze, ignited by a van on the A31 close to Ringwood, Hampshire, rapidly spread to the protected heathland. The fire continues to rage today, with plumes of smoke visible as far as 30 miles away in Portsmouth.

Authorities implored drivers to abandon their cars, warning it was crucial for survival, as the road was cleared to prevent these vehicles from turning into potential hazards in the heat of the situation.

A total of 23 cars were left behind. Among those evacuating were mothers pushing strollers, highlighting the urgency and gravity of the situation.

At the height of the emergency, 26 fire engines were deployed to combat the flames. Fire crews were forced to dismantle sections of the central reservation to clear vehicles from the road and bring the fire under control.

The emergency services had received more than 160 calls relating to the blaze just before 5.30pm.

It comes during a record-breaking dry spell in England, with 27million people subject to a hosepipe ban and a sixth heatwave of the year set to arrive later this week.

Further areas are set to be placed into an official drought today – which is declared when an area has gone more than 50 days without rain.

The area hit by the blaze is protected heathland which is home to a number of rare species including reptiles, according to the New Forest National Park Authority.

Hampshire Police moved the abandoned vehicles yesterday as the fire was being tackled and they will now need to be recovered. Drivers who had to leave their cars were advised to call 101 with their numberplate details so they can be returned.

Hundreds of motorists were held up by the blaze while fire crews worked out how to evacuate them. Those affected explained how huge flames spread across both sides of the dual carriageway about a mile from the Canadian War Memorial just north-east of Shobley.

One driver said: ‘It happened so fast. Some drivers just went straight through the flames. Others did emergency stops, turned around and tried to get back along the carriageway. It was sheer panic.’

Another motorist, who did not wish to be named, told the Daily Mail: ‘The wind picked up and I was sat for about ten to 15 minutes before the police even arrived, to which the two officers were saying completely different things and then both ended up agreeing to tell everyone to get out their cars and walk down the opposite side of the dual carriageway as the fire was spreading rapidly due to the wind picking up.

‘I got made to walk about one to two miles, but as I was walking fire rescue were trying to unbolt the central reservation to try and get some of the cars off the carriage to make the area a bit safer and to allow passage for the fire trucks.

‘After about two hours of waiting I was directed to go back to my vehicle – another one- to two-mile walk – where the fire had been controlled enough for us to safely move them off the carriageway with a police escort.’

He added: ‘The fire service did an amazing job, the fire was less than 10m from some of the cars and none of the cars set alight.’

Motorists were urged to avoid the area and use alternative routes.

Lindsey Legg, who was travelling back to Bournemouth from Heathrow Airport with her husband and three children, told BBC Radio Solent: ‘We started seeing people abandoning their cars. Women and children were walking with buggies.

‘Police told us “you cant go any further”. We realised the fire was going through the field – it was pretty scary.

‘We had to abandon the car and cross the central reservation to get away from the side of the fire. We thought the car was going to go up at one point. It was pretty hairy.’

Temperatures in Hampshire rose above 30C as motorists gathered in the shade next to the road.

Libbi Aldred, 36, said she had been driving on the dual carriageway when around ten cars in front of her began slowing down and putting their hazards on.

She said there was a fire ‘in the middle’ of the road and there was ‘smoke’ and ‘billowing’ flames.

Ms Aldred, a dog trainer from Hightown, Hampshire, said another driver – a grandfather who had his grandchildren with him – saw two cars in front of him go through the blaze but that ‘the flames were hitting’ their cars.

He and other drivers turned around and began to head for the previous exit but Ms Aldred said police told them to stay in their cars.

‘We didn’t take that advice,’ she said, because ‘the flames started coming towards us’.

Robert Green said the fire was 400 to 500 yards in front of them.

He said: ‘People abandoned cars, running away on the opposite carriageway carrying kids. Our side was trying to turn around and move back through the middle of the cars but it was chaos.

‘A police lady told us to get out and abandon the car, was about to when I saw a cop down the road waving some people through. He directed us to a forest track. It was a little bit scary.’

Hayley Sharma-Smith said even far away they could ‘feel the heat like we were around a bonfire’ and they saw animals trotting down the roads to get away.

As the fire spread, police arrived and ordered drivers out of their cars after flames from the van ignited ‘tinderbox bracken’, before fire engines were filmed racing towards the blaze.

A police officer told motorists in the area to get out of their cars and move to the central reservation next to the road if they wanted to ‘stay alive’.

A firefighter was later overheard telling a police officer: ‘We want all the cars and people off the carriageway. Unattended cars are basically bombs when they go off.’

The driver of the van that the fire spread from is thought to have escaped.

A fire officer said: ‘We believe it was a van that caught fire on the road and that set alight to the shrubs at the side of the road.’

Ms Aldred said the fire spread quickly and the wind carried it into the vegetation next to the road.

One resident said the fire was understood to have started in a lorry close to Picket Post services.

Sue Bassett, a worker at a Shell garage at the services, said the road and petrol station had been shut but the fire had moved away from the carriageway.

She said: ‘The smoke is visible from here – you can see smoke from miles around. It’s still going strong in the forest but not leaping on to the road.

‘There are lots of firefighters, they are pumping water up from the lakes. They are having to run out pipes over the carriageway so they can’t open up the road.’

She added: ‘It’s almost scary with the rivers running low on water – it’s a challenge.’

Locals had to be evacuated due to fears the inferno may spread to their homes and cabins.

A couple and their horses staying at a cabin nearby in Burley were evacuated on the advice of the police in the early hours.

The owner, who did not want to be named, said: ‘It came quite close to our house. We were getting ready to be evacuated but at 3am we were told we were probably safe.

‘The people staying at Wilf’s Cabin did go on the advice of the police, they had two horses with them.’

A New Forest National Park Authority spokesman said: ‘It’s rare heathland which globally is more rare than rainforest with lots of rare species.

‘We have the highest concentration of lowland heathland in western Europe and it’s internationally protected. It is home to all six UK native reptiles, Dartford warblers, nightjars, insects – it’s devastating.’

The spokesman added that it was too early to tell how much damage had been caused because the incident was still ongoing.

Some 26 fire engines and four water carriers were initially at the site yesterday evening, which was scaled down to ten today.

Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service said the blaze spread from the vehicle to the central reservation before progressing into nearby heathland in a south-easterly direction towards Backley Bottom, and is in a ‘challenging rural location’.

A spokesman said today: ‘Firefighters continue to tackle the fire affecting heathland near the A31 and will remain on site for the foreseeable future. We continue to have a significant presence in the area as crews work to bring the fire under control.’

In an update, the service added: ‘The smoke, which was clearly visible across the area and from both sides of the Solent yesterday, has reduced significantly.

‘Some smoke remains visible locally, but it is now much less widespread. We currently have ten fire engines and ten off-road vehicles at the scene, with crews continuing to work in challenging conditions.’

The fire service has warned people living nearby that it may need to lay hoses across their property as it draws water from a nearby lake.

The statement continued: ‘Firefighters are also laying a high-volume pump (HVP) system across Ringwood to provide a reliable and sustainable supply of water to crews tackling the fire.

‘The fire is in a challenging rural location, where maintaining a steady water supply can be difficult.

‘The HVP system allows us to move large amounts of water over a longer distance, helping crews maintain a continuous supply while they work to bring the fire under control.

‘People in and around Ringwood may see firefighters and equipment involved in laying the system.

‘This is an important part of our response and will help support firefighting operations at the scene. Please do not drive over the hose as this could cause damage and result in loss of water.’

Forestry England said in a statement that it was supporting the emergency services tackling the fire, which it said had spread to Bratley Wood and the surrounding area which includes a Canadian war memorial.

The statement continues: ‘The fire is currently estimated as having affected over 100 hectares.

‘Incidents like this can be devastating to all of the things that make the New Forest so special. Our team will be carefully assessing the impact once the incident is fully resolved.’

Bournemouth Airport, which is located in nearby Hurn Dorset, urged holidaymakers to allow plenty of extra time with their journeys.

It posted online: ‘Please allow plenty of extra time for your journey to Bournemouth Airport.

‘The A31 in Hampshire is closed in both directions between M27, J2 and A338 due to a van fire which occurred yesterday afternoon.

‘The fire then spread to nearby heathland, and as such is now a major incident.’

Meanwhile, Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service declared a major incident yesterday as two large fires in woodland put a strain on resources.

Several wildfires have broken out in the UK over recent weeks, including large blazes at Dunwich Heath in Suffolk, Headon Warren on the Isle of Wight, Llanwonno in the Rhondda Valleys, South Wales, and the Cairngorms National Park in Scotland.

According to the Fire Severity Index, any wildfires were likely to be exceptionally severe yesterday in almost all of the east and south-east of England. ‘Exceptional’ severity is the highest ranking.

The Met Office data includes rainfall, temperature and humidity, and agencies use the index to assess the severity of fire if it starts. It does not cover the chances of wildfires occurring.

Heatwave conditions will likely return later this week, with a high of 36C expected in parts of East Anglia and the South East by Thursday, according to the Met Office.

So far the extreme weather this summer has included two record-breaking heatwaves in May and June that led to more than 2,800 excess deaths.

Two more heatwaves in July, the driest July in England and Wales since records began in 1836, have fuelled drought and wildfires. An upcoming fifth heatwave was confirmed last week.
