SANFORD, Fla. – Rising water along the St. Johns River is raising flood concerns in Sanford, with city officials warning that a key road near Lake Monroe could be closed if conditions deteriorate.
Lake Monroe reached 4.8 feet Monday before rising to 5.22 feet, according to a subsequent city update. Forecasts indicate the lake could climb to 6.2 feet by Wednesday—about 1.5 feet above its level at the beginning of the week.
Why water levels are rising
The increase is linked to rising levels along the St. Johns River, which are expected to continue upward over the next several days. A National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration tracker also shows the river continuing to rise in the near term.
Sanford officials said they are monitoring the situation closely as floodwaters move closer to roads surrounding Lake Monroe.

Seminole Boulevard could be closed
Seminole Boulevard, located along the Lake Monroe shoreline, could be affected by the rising water. If flooding reaches the roadway, officials may shut down sections of the boulevard to safeguard motorists and pedestrians.
No road closures had been announced in the city’s latest update.
Officials said they will continue tracking lake levels and alert residents if a closure becomes necessary.
