A fire has broken out at one of Australia‘s two operating oil refineries, sparking a warning for nearby residents to stay inside.
Emergency services were called the Geelong facility when the blaze was reported about 11pm.

In the early hours just past 2 a.m., a significant fire erupted at the Shell Parade oil refinery located in Corio. Authorities quickly responded to the blaze, and fortunately, there have been no reports of injuries thus far, according to police statements.

A spokesperson informed 9news.com.au that due to the substantial smoke emanating from the fire, residents in the vicinity are advised to remain indoors and keep their windows closed to avoid inhalation of the smoke.

At around 1:10 a.m., the Country Fire Authority (CFA) issued a watch and act warning for several suburbs surrounding the area. This alert came after a shift in the wind direction began pushing smoke towards the northern part of Geelong.

Individuals residing south of Refinery Road in Corio received urgent instructions to seek immediate shelter inside their homes.

The CFA advised, “Ensure all exterior doors and windows are securely closed. Turn off any heating or cooling systems, and make sure fireplaces and vents are sealed.”

“You should avoid the area.

“If you are driving, close the windows in your vehicle and turn off the air conditioning.

“Keep the roads clear so emergency services can respond.”

The warning, which was upgraded from an earlier advice message, encompassed Chilwell, Corio, Drumcondra, Geelong, Geelong West, Hamlyn Heights, Newtown, Norlane, North Geelong, North Shore, Rippleside and South Geelong.

The CFA said smoke might be impacting south of Refinery Road to West Fyans Street and Fyans Street, as well as east of Shannons Avenue to the waterfront.

Six domestic oil refineries have closed in the last 20 years, leaving only the Ampol Lytton refinery in Brisbane and Viva Energy’s Geelong facility operational and meaning Australia imports 90 per cent of its liquid fuel needs.

According to Viva Energy, the refinery processes up to 120,000 barrels of oil per day and supplies more than 50 per cent of Victoria’s fuel needs.

It’s unclear what impact, if any, the fire may have on fuel supplies amid the ongoing crisis sparked by the war in Iran.

Viva Energy has been contacted for comment.
