WAYNESBORO, Ga, () – The atmosphere at Boss Hog is charged with fierce competition.
“Absolutely, there are nerves. No drinking allowed. It’s all about clinching that trophy,” expressed Joe Jackson, a seasoned competitor in the barbecue scene.
While it might resemble a backyard gathering, this event is anything but casual. It’s known as “The Show.”
“This year, we have 42 teams participating. They come from all corners of the United States, so the competition will be stiff,” shared Taunya Dawkins, co-leader of the Red Rooster team.
“My wife always asks what my primary aim is. I tell her it’s to win. If I don’t believe I can win, there’s no point in competing,” said Ricky Flakes, a veteran contender from Waynesboro, Georgia.
It’s a barbecue battleground at Boss Hog, and you see some real road warriors with these rookies finding it a bit intimidating.
“You can look at some of these set ups. We got 40-foot-long campers with their barbecue decals all over it: big rigs, big grills, big smokers. I think these guys are the real deal,” said Blake Williamson.
“These professional cuers know they got game. What’s your best pitch? What’s your fast ball?”
“I think my brisket is,” said Wes Wallace.
“Chicken. Last year, it was ribs. This year’s it’s chicken. You never know,” said Taunya.
“I think our pulled pork is probably going to be the best,” said Blake.
“My strongest is brisket. I’ve done brisket for years. Always have. Not scared of it,” said Joe.
You don’t become a pro barbecuer without self-confidence, and fear not, they’re not just blowing smoke.
