SAVANNAH, Ga. — The Georgia Historical Society (GHS) announced the passing of Ted Turner on Wednesday, marking the end of an influential era.

“It’s the end of an era,” remarked W. Todd Groce, president and CEO of the Georgia Historical Society. “Ted Turner’s impact is monumental, stretching beyond Georgia to the entire world. Historians will continue to analyze his revolutionary contributions to television news and sports broadcasting for years to come.”

In recognition of his transformative vision, GHS honored Turner in 2018 with a historical marker celebrating the launch of CNN, a pivotal moment in news media history.

Further cementing his legacy, Turner was inducted as a Georgia Trustee in 2010 by GHS alongside the Office of the Governor, the highest accolade the state bestows.

Turner’s roots trace back to Cincinnati, Ohio, where he was born in 1938. At the age of nine, he relocated to Savannah, Georgia, where his passion for sailing blossomed. A distinguished sailor, Turner was named Rolex Yachtsman of the Year four times and famously clinched the America’s Cup in 1977.
