GROVETOWN, Ga. () – In the early hours of Monday, April 27th, at approximately 1:00 am, officers from the Grovetown Police Department were dispatched to a residence on the 300 block of Newmantown Road following reports of gunfire amid a domestic dispute.

When officers arrived, they spoke with Kimberly McCarty, who explained that her husband, 33-year-old Thomas McCarty, returned home in a state of agitation after receiving a ticket due to an accident.

Kimberly McCarty detailed that the couple began arguing about the vehicle’s damage and the potential repair costs.

According to her account, Thomas McCarty discharged a handgun into the ground during the argument, narrowly missing her.

She also mentioned that the gun initially malfunctioned and that her husband had to reload it before successfully firing the shot.

Mr. McCarty left the home before officers arrived and a BOLO was issued for his vehicle.

A short time later, he was stopped by a McCormick County Deputy and taken into custody on a traffic offense.

A hold was placed on Mr. McCarty, and warrants were secured for Aggravated Assault and Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Crime.

The suspect waived extradition from South Carolina and was picked up this morning by Grovetown Officers and transported to the Columbia County Detention Center, where he remains without bond.
