The Illinois Sports Hall of Fame celebrated its annual ceremony in Springfield by welcoming 48 new members, adding another chapter to its storied history.
Enshrining the class of 2026, the Hall recognized individuals who have left a significant mark on Illinois athletics. The honorees ranged across high school, college, and professional sports, drawing attention to their diverse and commendable contributions.
Among the distinguished inductees from Central Illinois this year were some local heroes. Springfield’s own Indy 500 racer, Donnie Beechler, joined the ranks alongside Gia Lewis-Smallwood, a Champaign native and decorated Olympian in track and field. Furthermore, Meridian High alumna and women’s rugby bronze medalist, Lauren Doyle, was also honored for her achievements.
This eclectic class featured several Illini alumni across various disciplines. Notables included basketball stars Kiwane Garris, Christopher Gandy, and Tom Michael, as well as softball standouts Meredith Hackett Kindt and Jenna Hall. Football contributors received recognition with Brad Hopkins, Rashard Mendenhall, and John W. Wright making the list. Soccer’s Tara Hurless and the baseball father-son legend duo, Ed and Scott Spiezio, also joined the celebrated ranks. Mark Johnson, the respected former wrestling coach at Illinois, was another key figure highlighted.
Rashard Mendenhall, noted for his exceptional college football career and as a Skokie native, addressed the gathering. He notably earned the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year accolade back in 2007, cementing his place in the lore of Illinois football.
