CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The Minnesota Timberwolves have advanced to the NBA Playoffs’ Western Conference semifinals, largely thanks to the contributions of two former University of Illinois basketball standouts.
The Timberwolves secured their spot in the next round with a decisive 110-98 victory over the Denver Nuggets on Thursday, clinching the series in six games.
Ayo Dosunmu delivered an impressive 43-point performance off the bench in a pivotal game four win. However, he was absent from game six due to undisclosed reasons. With Minnesota also missing key players Anthony Edwards and Donte DiVincenzo, Terrence Shannon Jr. stepped up for his first playoff start, contributing a strong 24 points in the series-deciding game.
While Timberwolves fans are undoubtedly excited about the impact of these former Illinois players, few share the enthusiasm quite like Brad Underwood. The Illinois men’s basketball head coach, who attended game three of the series, frequently credits Dosunmu and Shannon Jr. with playing significant roles in the recent success of the Illinois basketball program.
“They’re both remarkable young men and fierce competitors,” Underwood commented. “Their winning mentality is part of what drives them to excel. It’s gratifying to see them thrive, and it bodes well for Minnesota’s future if they continue to perform at this level.”
Both of these Illini turned Timberwolves were introduced into Illinois’ Honored Jerseys program, with a banner picturing their Illini uniform being lifted into the rafters at State Farm Center.
The Timberwolves now get ready to take on the San Antonio Spurs, with game one scheduled for Monday, May 4.
