The Netflix documentary “The Crash” delves into a chilling true crime incident that took place on July 31, 2022. Dominic Russo and Davion Flanagan lost their lives when Russo’s girlfriend, Mackenzie Shirilla, deliberately drove into a brick wall. Despite suffering severe injuries, Shirilla, then just 17, survived and later faced trial. Prosecutors argued that she intentionally accelerated before the fatal collision.
Shirilla faced multiple charges, including four counts of murder, four counts of felonious assault, two counts of aggravated vehicular homicide, alongside charges of drug possession and possessing criminal tools. In 2023, she was convicted of the deaths of Flanagan and Russo, receiving two concurrent 15-to-life sentences. Currently, she is serving her time at the Ohio Reformatory for Women, convicted on a total of 12 felony charges.
The documentary highlights the tumultuous nature of Shirilla’s relationship with Russo, noting her alleged anger over accusations of infidelity on Russo’s part. In a recorded confrontation before the crash, Shirilla was seen threatening to damage Russo’s car. Her mother later revealed that Shirilla had previously threatened to crash her car when frustrated. These factors contributed to her conviction, although Shirilla remains hopeful for an early release through appeal.
“The Crash” captures a pivotal moment in Shirilla’s life, yet her story continues beyond the documentary’s scope. She remains optimistic about the possibility of parole or a successful appeal that could lead to her release. However, her journey through the legal system has been challenging. In 2024, the Eighth District Court of Appeals in Ohio rejected her initial appeal. A subsequent petition for post-conviction relief in 2026 was dismissed due to a minor filing delay, missing the deadline by just one day. Shirilla has since appealed this dismissal. Her first parole hearing is scheduled for October 29, 2037. As she awaits further developments, Shirilla continues to speak out, sharing her perspective in interviews and through her appearance in “The Crash.”
MacKenzie Shirilla’s legal travails continue
While “The Crash” might end up being one of the best true crime movies on Netflix, it also stops at a certain place in Mackenzie Shirilla’s life. In the meantime, she continues to hope for parole or a successful appeal that will spring her from jail.Â
Thus far, her lawyers filed a request in 2024 with the Eighth District Court of Appeals in Ohio that was rejected. A second petition requesting post-conviction relief was dismissed in 2026 because she filed the documents a day out of the 365-day eligibility period. Shirilla has since posted an appeal regarding the petition’s rejection. Meanwhile, her first parole hearing will occur on October 29, 2037. While she waits for the court to confirm or reject her conviction, she continues to give interviews, and appears in “The Crash” to give her own side of the story about the case.
