Trump Administration Celebrates Over $1 Billion in UN Budget Cuts Amid Reform Success

0

UNITED NATIONS — In a significant fiscal development, the Trump administration proudly announced it has achieved over $1 billion in budget cuts at the United Nations within just six months. The administration hailed these reductions as a clear sign that an institution often viewed as resistant to change is finally starting to embrace reform.

The most recent achievement was marked on June 30, when all 193 member countries of the U.N. came together to approve a peacekeeping budget of roughly $5.1 billion for the upcoming fiscal year. This figure represents a significant decrease of about $550 million, or 9.7%, compared to the previous year.

Adding to this is a 15% reduction in the U.N.’s regular budget, which was approved in December. U.S. officials highlight that these agreements cumulatively surpass $1 billion in cuts to assessed U.N. budgets, describing it as an unprecedented level of fiscal restraint.

Assessed budgets rely on mandatory contributions from member states, calculated primarily based on the economic size of each nation.

“On June 30th, with U.S. leadership, all 193 countries came together again for the second time in six months,” U.S. Ambassador for U.N. Management and Reform Jeff Bartos told News Media. “We’ve achieved over a billion dollars of savings in six months, which is unprecedented. Any one cut would be unprecedented. The totality of the reforms is monumental.”

The agreement comes as the United Nations faces mounting financial pressure and prepares for a leadership transition in 2027, with Secretary-General António Guterres set to leave office at the end of his second term. At the same time, the Trump administration has made reform a central pillar of its U.N. strategy, arguing the organization has become overly bureaucratic and inefficient.

In response to questions from News Media, U.N. spokesman Stéphane Dujarric confirmed that the peacekeeping budget was reduced by roughly $550 million and the regular budget by 15%, describing both as “unprecedented reductions.”

Bartos argues the reforms reflect sustained pressure from the Trump administration and months of negotiations led by the U.S. Mission.

“The new budget, this reformed budget, the enhanced efficiency changes the culture of how the U.N. looks at peacekeeping,” Bartos said. “Every dollar has to achieve impact on the ground.”

He pointed to the U.N. Mission in South Sudan as an example, saying the United States worked to streamline the mission’s mandate before reducing its budget accordingly.

Another reform highlighted by the administration changes how the U.N. handles unused budget credits.

Until now, U.N. financial rules required the organization to return unspent funds to member states even if those contributions had never actually been paid, a practice critics said worsened the organization’s recurring liquidity crisis.

The General Assembly voted on June 30 to introduce, on a four-year trial basis, a new methodology under which unspent funds will be returned only when backed by cash actually received.

Bartos said the change could save the organization more than $1 billion over the next three years. That projected figure is separate from the more than $1 billion in budget reductions already approved over the past six months.

He called the change another example of “common-sense” reform and said it could save the organization more than $1 billion over the next three years.

The United Nations likewise welcomed the change, though officials noted it had been a longstanding priority of Secretary-General António Guterres.

“I have been pushing for this reform for almost a decade,” Guterres said after the vote. He described the previous system as a “Kafkaesque cycle” in which the organization was expected “to give back cash that did not exist.”

Dujarric said the reform would allow the U.N. to manage resources “in a more predictable and responsible way” while helping ensure operational continuity, particularly for peacekeeping missions.

Bartos insists the latest budget agreements are only the beginning.

Among the administration’s next priorities are reforms to staff compensation, employee benefits and the U.N. pension system, areas he argues consume resources that could otherwise support humanitarian operations and peacekeeping missions.

“We’re going to continue to see us push whether it’s on benefits, whether it’s on staff compensation, whether it’s on the pension system,” Bartos said. “There’s massive numbers of additional reforms that our team is working on right now.”

He also suggested reform will remain a central issue as member states begin selecting the next secretary-general.

“We’re going to select the next secretary-general,” Bartos said. “That reform momentum that has been growing over the last 15, 18 months … you’ll see that continuing in 2027 with the new secretary-general.”

Blue Jays World Series Hero Duane Ward Passes Away at 62

Duane Ward, widely celebrated as one of the Toronto Blue Jays’ finest relief pitchers, passed away at 62, as announced by the team on Sunday morning. Ward played a crucial role in the team securing consecutive World Series titles in 1992 and 1993.

The Blue Jays revealed that Ward succumbed to natural causes shortly after arriving in Toronto on Friday. He was in the city for the unveiling of a statue honoring Joe Carter and the World Series victories, but sadly, he did not make it to the Saturday event.

Born in New Mexico, Ward set a remarkable franchise record in 1993 with 45 saves in a single season, which also saw him achieve his only All-Star selection.

“The Toronto Blue Jays profoundly mourn the loss of Duane Ward, whose legacy as one of the most skillful and cherished relievers is deeply etched in our history,” read the team’s heartfelt statement.

Ward delivered outstanding performances during the 1992 World Series clash against the Braves, securing two wins and two holds. He pitched 3 ⅓ flawless innings, giving up just one hit and one walk while striking out six batters.

He had four saves during the ’93 postseason, including two in the World Series against the Phillies. He earned the win in the clinching Game 6 after Carter’s iconic three-run, walk-off home run.

After he was drafted No. 9 overall by the Braves in 1982, Atlanta traded Ward to Toronto during his first MLB season in 1986 and he spent the rest of his career with the Blue Jays.

He was inducted into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame in 2020.

“Duane will be deeply missed by our fans, and we extend our heartfelt condolences to his family,” the Blue Jays said. “Duane will always be a cherished part of the Blue Jays family, and we will forever be grateful for his contributions to our organization and to baseball in Canada.”

Ward finished his career with a 3.28 ERA, 121 saves and 679 strikeouts in 462 appearances.

Spain vs Argentina World Cup Final: Live Score Updates

Imagine the possibilities, what could have been?

In a different scenario, yesterday’s clash between England and France might have been the World Cup final. However, it served as the play-off for third place instead.

Ultimately, the match delivered excitement and thrills fit for a final. It was chaotic yet captivating.

Typically, the third-place play-off lacks energy, often less interesting than watching paint dry due to both teams’ lack of enthusiasm. Yet, yesterday defied that norm completely.

With no pressure to bear, the teams exhibited thrilling performances, netting a combined total of 10 goals. England emerged victorious with a 6-4 scoreline. The spectacle was unparalleled at the World Cup—a truly remarkable experience.

England banged in four in the first half, showing the shackles were off against a pretty strong France side. But then they showed their defensive frailties, with the French managing to pull it back to 4-3.

Then it got even crazier, with the teams trading goals even deep into injury time. Bukayo Saka bagged a hat-trick, while Kylian Mbappe added to his monster tally, making it 10 goals for the tournament.

An insane game.

Ex-Cubs Star Anthony Rizzo Steals Spotlight Catching Home Run in Wrigley Field Bleachers

0

CHICAGO — In a memorable scene at Wrigley Field, former Chicago Cubs star Anthony Rizzo snagged a piece of history, as he retrieved the ball from current first baseman Michael Busch’s solo home run during the Cubs’ 6-2 triumph over Minnesota. This event unfolded in the iconic right-field bleachers where legends are often celebrated.

Although Rizzo missed catching Busch’s 12th home run of the season in the air, he adeptly stretched behind to pick it up off the concrete. He triumphantly lifted the ball high for the crowd to see, holding a young boy on his shoulders in a heartwarming gesture.

Prior to the game, Rizzo, a revered three-time All-Star who spent a decade with the Cubs, participated in the unveiling of the “Champions Gate.” This 31-foot wide arch on Wrigley Field’s western side marks the 10th anniversary of the team’s 2016 World Series victory, a momentous occasion in Cubs history.

Meanwhile, Busch was unaware of the former Cubs icon’s involvement with his home run ball until catcher Miguel Amaya, who contributed two RBIs with a double in the second inning, passed on the news.

Reflecting on the moment, the significance wasn’t lost on the 28-year-old Busch. The scene of a former slugging first baseman recovering the home run ball of the current one resonated deeply. Busch, who hit 34 homers last year, stood in awe of Rizzo’s record, with the elder first baseman having notched 242 home runs during his tenure with Chicago and a total of 303 over his career.

“I thought that was super, just like mind-blowing,” Busch said. “Who knows how things work out, but I thought that was pretty cool.

“Just the 2016 team, what they did for this city and the championship that they brought was obviously a big deal,” Busch added. “You could just tell from the fans how much they were loved and how much joy they brought to the city. And then Rizzo was kind of a cornerstone for them.”

Rizzo hit .292 with 32 homers and 109 RBIs in the 2016 regular season, then went on to add three homers and 10 RBIs in the postseason as the Cubs ended a 108-year championship drought.

Team owner Tom Ricketts, 2016 manager Joe Maddon and Rizzo addressed the crowd in a ceremony that included some 20 players from team. Maddon and the players returned to the field before the game and right-hander Kyle Hendricks threw a ceremonial first pitch.

Boost Leg Strength: Essential Exercises for Men Over 60

0

Building strength in your lower body is crucial for maintaining peak physical condition as you age gracefully.

>

Let’s face it: life can get unbelievably hectic. With looming work deadlines, seemingly endless errands, and bustling social lives, carving out time for exercise often falls by the wayside. Fitness is typically the first thing sacrificed in our busy schedules. Therefore, having a few effective at-home workout routines up your sleeve can be a blessing. Such exercises allow you to stay committed to your health without the extra hassle of making time for the gym.

To set you on the right path, we consulted with Ben Walker, the mind behind Anywhere Fitness and a seasoned personal trainer known for assisting clients in the comfort of their own homes. Walker also collaborates with athletes and medical professionals. He shared with us seven home exercises that are ideal for men over 60 who wish to regain their leg strength.

“Focusing on the lower body is vital because it houses the body’s most massive muscle groups. The quadriceps, aptly named, consist of four large muscles on each leg. Meanwhile, the hamstrings are composed of three muscles per side, and the gluteus maximus stands as the largest muscle in the body. Training these muscles not only burns a significant amount of calories but also contributes tremendously to staying fit in your later years,” Walker explains.

Iran Stokes Global Tensions with Bizarre Billboard Suggesting Lindsey Graham’s Death

0

Iran has escalated tensions with the United States through provocative billboards that insinuate sinister narratives around Senator Lindsey Graham’s demise and suggest a potential assassination threat against former President Donald Trump.

A conspicuous red billboard emerged in Tehran’s Valiasr Square this week, ominously questioning, “Who is D nexT one? #lindseygraham”. This has sparked speculation and fear given its suggestive content.

The capitalized letters ‘D’ and ‘T’ in the slogan are interpreted by some as a direct reference to Trump, subtly marking him as Iran’s potential focus amid rising geopolitical tensions.

In another provocative move, Enghelab Square in central Tehran hosts a giant billboard featuring an image of the former US president partially obscured by an open black coffin. Beneath the image, the chilling message “We will kill Trump” is scrawled in a graffiti-like style, sending a menacing signal.

These visual political jabs follow a series of actions aimed at former President Trump. A mural depicting framed images of Trump, his family, and Melania set against coffins draped in the US flag, with the White House as a backdrop, was recently revealed in Iran’s Palestine Square. This coincided with US military actions impacting Iran’s infrastructure, further inflaming hostilities.

The newest billboards have also fueled conspiracy theories that the Middle Eastern country may have been involved in Graham’s mysterious death at the age of 71 last weekend, as the politician was in Ukraine just days before, leading people to speculate Tehran may have orchestrated it.

There has been no confirmation or evidence suggesting Iran had anything to do with the senator’s death.

A day after returning from Ukraine and just hours before his death, the South Carolina senator spoke to Trump on the telephone.

An unidentified person who spoke with Graham in the moments after told Axios he complained that he was feeling unwell.

When the individual urged Graham to seek medical attention immediately, the senator said he would do so on Sunday morning after his scheduled appearance on NBC’s Meet the Press.

He then joked: ‘I can’t die now. I still need to do the Russian sanctions, get Iran sorted out, and do Israeli-Saudi normalization,’ according to the outlet.

But just a few hours after making the quip on July 11, the senator was seen lying on a gurney as first responders attempted life-saving measures in pictures obtained by TMZ.

He appeared to be intubated as EMTs pushed the gurney into a nearby ambulance that was headed for George Washington University Hospital.

Authorities first received a 911 call about a ‘cardiac arrest’ at Graham’s home at around 8.30pm that night, according to multiple reports. Hordes of first responders were then seen descending on the street outside Graham’s house.

Just about 25 minutes after the call, first responders had started CPR as the senator suffered from cardiac arrest, according to police scanner audio obtained by The Washington Post.

Then, early on July 12, Graham’s office announced he had ‘passed away from a brief and sudden illness.’

His cause of death has since been revealed to be ‘aortic dissection due to arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease.’

The Mayo Clinic defines an aortic dissection as a tear in the inner layer of the aorta, the body’s main artery. It can be fatal if blood rushes through the tear. In Graham’s case, plaque buildup on his heart weakened the aortic walls, causing a tear.

After the shocking new advertisements and Graham’s death, Trump took to Truth Social early Sunday morning to call for additional measures to be taken against Iran in the senator’s name.

‘Republicans should add Iran to the Russian Sanctions Bill. That’s what Lindsey wanted to do, and it was going to happen. IMPORTANT!!!’ he wrote.

It is unclear who is behind the Iranian billboards. The Daily Mail has reached out to the White House for comment.

Iranian officials are also now urging people to stay away from US military bases in the Middle East.

‘In response to US acts of aggression and threats from terrorist groups, Iran has launched missile strikes targeting Sulaymaniyah (Iraq) and Bahrain,’ the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting said on X.

‘People should stay away from US bases.’

Iran’s new leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, also took to X to call out Trump, writing: ‘Now that the American enemy seeks to ignite war and endure heavier costs, it should know that the Iranian nation and the Resistance Front have unforgettable lessons in store for it.’

Khamenei also called Trump the ‘Great Satan.’

‘Today, the Great Satan has once again revealed its true, unmasked face, so that this dark episode of criminality and broken promises serves as yet another indisputable testament to the US’s dishonesty, irrationality, unreliability, and malicious nature,’ the leader wrote on X.

‘Coercion, totalitarianism, and brutality are inseparable components of the US creed and doctrine.

‘The repeated breaches of the agreement by the Great Satan [the US] regarding the MOU signed by the Presidents of Iran and the US have once again laid bare a fundamental truth: the signature of the US President is utterly worthless and devoid of credibility.’

Speaking to Iranians, Khamenei said the government would seek to avenge citizens and that ‘vengeance is what our nation is demanding, and this must definitely be done.’

Muslim Leader Praises Government’s Response to Islamophobia While Highlighting Key Oversight

0

Major Muslim organizations have expressed approval of the Australian government’s measures to address Islamophobia, as outlined in a crucial report released ten months ago.

“This response is appreciated, but there’s still significant work to be accomplished,” stated The Alliance of Australian Muslims along with the Australian National Imams Council (ANIC).

Yet, an ANIC leader pointed out a “notable absence” in the government’s response.

On Saturday, the government agreed to 35 out of 54 proposals suggested by Aftab Malik, the Special Envoy to Combat Islamophobia, in his groundbreaking report from last year.

The government acknowledged the necessity of addressing the root causes of increasing Islamophobic racism and discrimination, with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese emphasizing that the response is focused on “practical steps to ensure community safety and enhance social unity.”

However, he did not explicitly say which of the 54 recommendations would be accepted or rejected.

“What we’ve done is respond to all of the recommendations — some of them we have adopted in full and are acting on already,” Albanese told reporters on Saturday. “Others we’ll give further consideration to”

The announcement comes 10 months after Malik put forward his report.

“For Muslim Australians, who continue to experience Islamophobia in their daily lives, this has been a long wait,” Malik said on Saturday.

“These measures matter. They are important. They demonstrate the government recognises Islamophobia as a real and serious problem that warrants a national response, but this is just the start of the journey.”

Malik said he understood the government “must balance competing priorities” but said “Muslim Australians should not be expected to bear the cost”, adding that he will continue to advocate for any outstanding recommendations.

“Where the government has acted, I will support that progress. Where recommendations remain outstanding, I will continue to advocate for them.”

Which recommendations have been accepted?

While the government said it would adopt 35 of the 54 recommendations, it hasn’t explicitly specified which.

Instead, it has grouped its response under four themes: education and awareness, protection and support, building social cohesion, and accountability and responsibility.

Under education, the government will establish a taskforce aimed at tackling Islamophobia in the community.

The Australian Curriculum will also be reviewed with a focus on strengthening racial and religious tolerance, in addition to the establishment of a research institute on Australian Muslim affairs.

Under protection and support, $41.9 million will be directed towards initiatives to improve security at Muslim faith-based places.

There will also be additional funding for mental health and wellbeing supports for local organisations helping communities affected by hate and violence.

Muslim communities will also be supported through new multicultural grants, with a particular focus on Muslim women and young Muslims — and the targeting of sporting events and events that foster cross-cultural engagement.

The government has also said there will be “improved” reporting, responses and community support to report Islamophobia through expanded Australian Federal Police (AFP) Community Liaison Teams and a new AFP Social Cohesion Team.

What’s been rejected?

The biggest recommendations that appear to be missing from the government’s report are those related to counterterrorism and racial discrimination laws.

Malik previously called for a ban on religious discrimination, for Muslims to join Sikhs and Jews in being explicitly protected in existing racial discrimination laws and recommended the government set up a commission of inquiry into Islamophobia, as well as a separate inquiry into anti-Palestinian and anti-Arab racism.

He also asked for an independent review into counterterrorism laws to investigate whether they were leading to discrimination against Muslims in Australia.

Asked on Saturday whether the government would be open to any revision of counterterrorism laws, Albanese said that was dependent on “appropriate advice from national security agencies”.

“People will have different views they will put forward, and they’re entitled to do so,” he said.

“We take advice from our security agencies. I have confidence in them. They get it right, and that is what is appropriate.”

Opposition minister for home affairs Jonno Duniam said addressing prejudice should not weaken counterterrorism frameworks.

“The Coalition will closely scrutinise the government’s response to Mr Malik’s report, particularly to establish which recommendations it intends to pursue, what they will cost, and what consequences they may have for national security and freedom of expression,”

“Every Australian should be free to practise their religion, support their family and live their life without fear of hatred, intimidation or violence.

“But addressing prejudice cannot be allowed to weaken our counter-terrorism framework, obscure the role of extremist ideology or constrain legitimate public debate.”

He added that the Coalition would “firmly resist any move in that direction”, including proposals to remove religious or ideological motivation from the legal definition of terrorism.

‘One glaring omission’

In a joint statement, the Alliance of Australian Muslims (AAM) and the Australian National Imams Council (ANIC) said the response was “an unprecedented and important step in the right direction towards recognising and addressing the serious impact of Islamophobia and anti-Muslim hate in Australia”.

“While this response is welcome, much more remains to be done,” the groups added.

“It must be followed by meaningful and timely action, supported by clear commitments, appropriate resources and strong accountability.”

ANIC senior advisor and spokesperson Bilal Rauf told SBS World News he also welcomed the government’s response, but said it contained “one glaring omission”, particularly when compared to the government’s response to antisemitism.

“The one glaring omission is that there wasn’t much, if any, discussion about legal consequences and enforcement,” Rauf said.

“If one looks at the range of responses to antisemitism — which is also prevalent and needs to be addressed — as compared to Islamophobia, the real sense is that there is a lesser priority being attached to Islamophobia.”

A studio headshot of a man with dark, slicked-back hair and a trimmed beard, looking forward and smiling faintly while wearing a pinstripe suit, a white shirt, and a green striped tie against a plain gray background.

“We saw that with antisemitism there were changes in laws, increased policing and security — there was an emphasis on legal enforcement and consequences — and yet, when it comes to the response to Islamophobia, that’s the part that really is missing.”

“The expectation was that there would also be an emphasis on legal consequence, standards and enforcement other than just resourcing and the soft measures.”

“The reality is that unless there is enforcement and legal consequence on the ground, there is a question for how far any change might travel.”

AAM and ANIC said there needed to be “practical enhancements” leading to systemic and structural improvements and that they were “working constructively” with the government and special envoy on recommendations that had “not yet received a formal response”.

“Muslim hate must be confronted with the same seriousness, urgency and determination as every other form of hatred, racism and religious discrimination,” they said.

“Achieving this will require clear commitments, adequate resources, effective accountability and the timely implementation of measures that deliver real and lasting change.”

Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke said that Islamophobia remained ”chronically under-reported” and that it was ”debilitating”.

”We have seen a rise in Islamophobic attacks and abuse directed at Muslim Australians,” he said.

“It is widespread. It is debilitating. And it is unacceptable.”

Uncovering Ormund Hightower’s Treatment of Prince Daeron

0

In a recent pulse-pounding episode of HBO’s House of the Dragon, the fear didn’t stem from fire-breathing dragons but from a volatile human reaction. Lord Ormund Hightower, portrayed by James Norton, finds himself receiving distressing news via a scroll from Harrenhal. His mood shift is immediate and palpable, prompting his squire, Prince Daeron Targaryen, played by Benjamin Evan Ainsworth, to discreetly signal another page to leave the room. What follows is an explosive display of anger, with Ormund taking out his frustrations on an unsuspecting dinner table.

The decision by Alicent Hightower, played by Olivia Cooke, to send her youngest son to be raised in Oldtown instead of King’s Landing is now under scrutiny. Daeron’s apparent readiness for Ormund’s temper outbursts suggests that life away from King’s Landing might not have been much of a reprieve after all.

In an exclusive conversation with DECIDER, James Norton, who brings Ormund Hightower to life on the screen, shed light on the subtle cues in the episode. When asked whether viewers should suspect past abuses by Ormund towards Daeron, Norton offered insight into the layered complexities of his character’s dynamics.

“I think so,” Norton remarked. “It’s a moment charged with drama, highlighting the multifaceted nature of Ormund’s character.”

Delving deeper, he added, “Beyond the surface, it’s clear Daeron lacks a father figure or mentor in Oldtown, save for Ormund. Consequently, he’s been shaped by Ormund’s influence. When Daeron tells the servant, ‘Get out of here,’ it’s a protective instinct, knowing the chaos that ensues when Ormund spirals into rage.”

For Norton, Daeron’s instinct to send the other boy away hints at deeper levels in the characters’ “very complicated — and let’s be honest — abusive, toxic relationship.”

“I think there’s also that thing when children become their parents’ carer. Why doesn’t Daeron leave the room?” Norton asked aloud. “And I think possibly it’s because he’s protecting Ormund from himself.”

Norton went on to explain that although Daeron has been “the victim of that rage and the target of it,” it was important that it was obvious that some sort of love also had to be present in their relationship.

“One of the very first conversations I had with [showrunner Ryan Condal and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth] was that this relationship has to have love in it, and in that sort of Stockholm syndrome way,” he said. “Daeron is almost a prisoner, and yet when I grab him by the shoulders after the end of Episode 4, of that terribly distressing scene, I’m genuinely so proud of my boy.”

“What was amazing was having Ben — fabulous actor by the way, so good — he was looking at me and his eyes were welling up. He was almost crying, and he was looking up with such love because all he wants is to be held, is to be loved. He’s just desperate for a parent, and in that moment, it was very real. It was like, he’d just won the race at sports day,” Norton said. “There’s so much complexity in that relationship, which was really wonderful to eke out.”

So what does this mean for Ormund’s plans for Daeron and Tumbleton? You’ll just have to tune in to an all-new episode of House of the Dragon tonight at 9 p.m. ET on HBO and HBO Max to find out…

Chelsea’s £117m Swoop: How Rogers and Palmer Will Thrive

0

In a move that sends shockwaves through the Premier League, Chelsea’s audacious bid of £117 million for Morgan Rogers is raising eyebrows. Whether or not this sum reflects the player’s true value, it undeniably signifies Chelsea’s aggressive intentions, particularly as Rogers shares a signature goal celebration with Cole Palmer.

Chelsea, currently absent from European competitions, appears undeterred as they make bold, strategic moves to strengthen their squad.

This acquisition strikes a critical blow to Arsenal, who had shown strong interest in the 23-year-old England international. It’s especially disheartening for Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, who has long admired Rogers, even before the current transfer activities began.

Moreover, it dispels the notion that Chelsea’s absence from the Champions League limits their competitive prowess. By snatching a player coveted by even the reigning Premier League champions, Chelsea asserts their ongoing influence in the football world.

Though the deal isn’t quite inked, the clubs have reached a verbal agreement. Aston Villa’s and Chelsea’s negotiations have settled on the hefty price tag, with personal terms also ironed out. Rogers is poised to commit to a six-year contract, extendable by an additional year, lasting until 2032.

Yet it is quite the response from Chelsea. Missing out on Europe entirely was embarrassing, no question about it. Finishing 10th in the Premier League was farcical, some way beneath their own standards. But they are now in line to secure a statement signing which, to their credit, would meet the ‘ready-made’ promises made by Behdad Eghbali and Co in the build-up to this summer.

Chelsea played their first friendly under Xabi Alonso on Saturday at Cobham. As revealed by Daily Mail Sport, the score was 3-1, and the scorers were Jamie Gittens, Liam Delap, and Emmanuel Emegha. We can now add, via one source, that the formation used was 4-2-3-1. Read into that what you will after Alonso’s history of using 3-4-2-1 to great success at Bayer Leverkusen.

It is not that Alonso would need to choose between Rogers or Palmer in each match if indeed he chose to use 4-2-3-1 in the future. They are both versatile, and could appear in other attacking positions alongside one another in the same starting line-up.

Chelsea were in for Rogers last summer also – Daily Mail Sport reported their interest in June 2025 at the same time that they had reignited talks for Jamie Gittens out of Borussia Dortmund – though Villa did not want to sell him at that time.

As the January 2026 window approached, Enzo Maresca was asked during the broadcast section of his press conference before a Chelsea-Villa game whether he would swap Rogers for Palmer. The Blues’ then-head coach answered: ‘No. Because I love Cole and Cole is my player.’

If finalised, Alonso will not need to be asked that same question at his own pressers moving forward. He would have them both, as a pair of No 10s or by trusting their versatility in his attacking line.

Alonso was involved in the talks for Rogers, including speaking to the transfer target personally. Arsenal were the frontrunners previously, with Chelsea said to have been pleading with Rogers to let them showcase their plan to him. Arteta’s side taking their sweet time opened up the opportunity for Alonso and Co. Presumably, Palmer had a say also, given he and Rogers are such close friends. Reece James, the Chelsea captain, has also been in the same England camp for the last month.

Chelsea will need to sell this summer, and they have no shortage of candidates for sale. Daily Mail Sport has been told Villa asked about Nicolas Jackson during club-to-club talks. They and Unai Emery are long-time admirers of the 25-year-old striker, though nothing serious came of his name cropping up in that moment.

It is understood Chelsea are still undecided on what to do with Jackson, with Alonso having been keen to take a look at the scorer in pre-season. Jackson is expected to fly to join his team-mates amid their tour of Australia and Asia unless something disrupts that schedule in the meantime, such as an offer too large to turn down arriving.

Given his World Cup involvement with England, whose last match was a third-place play-off with France on Saturday night, Rogers will now be due his downtime. The customary break is three weeks. Players can choose to cut that short if they wish.

Yet, if signed, it means Chelsea may still be waiting a little while before Rogers is officially with their squad. They will hope he is worth the wait for £117m.
