NYC’s Smoky Air: Inhaling Equivalent to 10 Cigarettes, Experts Warn

0

Taking a breath outdoors is akin to inhaling a cigarette puff.

Breathing the smoke-filled air in New York City for just three hours on Thursday could be equivalent to smoking 2.5 cigarettes, according to an expert’s alarming revelation.

The air in New York City has reached “unhealthy” levels, a consequence of wildfire smoke drifting down from Canada and the Great Lakes. This has led officials to advise residents to stay indoors for their safety.

“It’s fair to say that merely breathing the air in New York City today is like smoking ten cigarettes,” Michael Petroni, a seasoned pollution expert and former EPA employee, shared with The Post regarding spending an entire day outside.

All five boroughs have been under an Air Quality Health Advisory since Wednesday. The Air Quality Index (AQI) has been stuck between 151 and 200 — significantly above the 0-50 range that is considered “good,” as stated by the state Department of Environmental Conservation.

That means there are “unhealthy” levels of dust, dirt, soot, smoke and other toxins in the air that New Yorkers would typically only ingest by lighting a few cigarettes.

“The rule of thumb is about 20 AQI points for a whole day equals one cigarette,” explained Petroni, who worked for the EPA’s Office of Chemical Safety and Pollution Prevention.

While it may not sound nefarious, that exposure could be chipping away at New Yorkers’ lifespans.

The AQI measures particulate matter, which includes toxins ranging from heavy metals to aerosol droplets and other carcinogens that are invisible to the naked eye.

“They get into your bloodstream because they’re so small and they wreak havoc on your immune system. Over time, that adds up and it increases your likelihood of cancer, of heart disease,” said Petroni, who is currently working on an app that measures the air quality on a day-to-day basis.

Short term stays outdoors can also pose risks, he continued.

New Yorkers can expect itchy eyes, lethargy, inflammation, mucus build-up, headaches, shortness of breath and other symptoms.

“If you go for a run today, you’re gonna notice it really hard. You’re not gonna be able to run as fast. You’re gonna get tired very quickly. Your heart’s gonna race … Your body’s just trying to rush to like clear it all out, and it can’t very quickly,” said Petroni.

The good news is that New Yorkers can reduce their risk by simply staying indoors.

Air purification systems and air conditioning units can clear out the polluted air.

The city is also giving out free K95 masks to those who need to venture outdoors — the masks have up to a 95% pollution prevention rate, said Petroni.

Karoline Leavitt Makes Her Comeback to the White House Podium Post-Maternity Leave

0

Karoline Leavitt stepped up to the White House podium once again on Thursday afternoon, marking her first press briefing since welcoming her daughter, Viviana. Leavitt, who is celebrating this milestone in her career, revealed how she manages the delicate balance between her professional duties and the joys of nurturing her newborn.

At 28, Leavitt returned to her post in late June after a maternity leave that lasted just over a month. This brief pause allowed her to devote time to Viviana during those precious early weeks.

Leavitt and her husband, Nicholas Riccio, 60, are also proud parents to a son, Niko, who recently celebrated his second birthday on July 10. The couple is now busy juggling the joys and challenges of raising two young children.

Despite the demands that come with both motherhood and her role, Leavitt has been actively involved, accompanying former President Donald Trump on several nationwide trips in recent weeks. She returned to center stage at the White House this Thursday, confidently dressed in a striking pink power suit.

As she engaged with the press, Leavitt candidly discussed her approach to balancing a high-stakes position with her responsibilities at home, offering a glimpse into the life of a working mother navigating the corridors of power.

‘I don’t think there is a secret, you just have to show up every day and keep going, and it really does take a village,’ Leavitt told the press.

‘I’ll take the opportunity to shoutout to my husband, who is home with our babies right now. I look forward to returning home later to be with them, but it’s challenging,’ Leavitt continued.

Leavitt also praised the Trump administration and explained that she views her position as ‘more than a job,’ but rather, as a ‘public service.’

‘For me, I view this as more than a job, I view this as public service on behalf of a President.

‘I firmly believe in everything this administration is doing and [I believe he’s] really creating a better country for my children and their future, and I’m very grateful for that.

‘I’m very blessed to be working in this job but also to have two beautiful babies at home.’

Leavitt added that there was ‘nothing better than being a mother.’

Her outfit for her first press conference since giving birth seemed to include a sweet nod to her daughter, as she opted to wear powder pink.

The suit appeared to be from Zara; the blazer is currently on sale for $29.97 on the clothing brand’s website, while the pants are unfortunately sold out.

The Press Secretary accessorized the fun look with a pair of nude heels and a gold cross necklace.

Her return to the podium comes just a few weeks after she hilariously revealed the secret behind her postpartum glow while appearing on Fox & Friends.

‘The makeup artist downstairs, who did my glam this morning,’ Leavitt joked, when asked how she achieved her post-pregnancy radiance.

‘I’m very sleep-deprived, but a good glam will help you through the day,’ she added.

Elsewhere in the interview, Leavitt also spoke about how she balances having a newborn and working as the Press Secretary, giving one simple answer.

‘You just do it, you just wake up and you just do your best every day, day after day,’ she told Fox & Friends with a smile on her face.

‘But the baby is perfect, she is so sweet, she’s so cute, and I look forward to going home right now to get back to her,’ Leavitt said of her daughter, who they call Vivi.

Leavitt notoriously came back to work just a few days after she gave birth to Niko in July 2024, after President Trump was shot at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

At the time, Leavitt was the national press secretary for Trump’s presidential campaign.

Leavitt worked down to the wire this pregnancy, too, as she took to the podium at 39 weeks pregnant, during what was supposed to be the start of her maternity leave in the wake of the shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in April.

The annual event took a terrifying turn after a gunman attempted to target members of the Trump administration after guests had already posed up a storm on the red carpet.

Transform Your Balance After 60 with These 4 Power-Packed Exercises

Keeping a Steady Pace: Four Expert-Recommended Exercises to Enhance Your Balance After 60

>

After the age of 60, maintaining balance becomes crucial for everyday activities, such as rising from bed or navigating through a bustling parking lot. It goes beyond merely standing on one foot; something I’ve observed first-hand in my work as a trainer. Clients make remarkable advancements by honing in on the muscles and movement patterns essential for balance, rather than just focusing on static positions. The payoff is not only decreased instances of instability but also a boost in confidence with every step taken.

A common misunderstanding about balance is the notion of it being a solitary skill. However, in truth, optimal balance arises from the harmonious interplay of leg strength, core stability, ankle flexibility, and coordination, all influenced by the nervous system. If any element falters, it disrupts the entire framework. I advocate for a dynamic approach to balance training, urging clients not to limit themselves to just one stationary exercise daily.

Years of assisting those 60 and above to move with assurance have shown that the most significant strides come from simple exercises engaging multiple systems simultaneously. The following four exercises are designed to fortify the muscles responsible for your stability while instilling an improved response to positional shifts. Integrating these exercises regularly can forge a robust balance, benefiting every facet of daily life.

Extradited from Somalia: Alleged Feeding Our Future Fraud Leader Faces US Charges

0

Authorities have announced that a key figure allegedly behind the colossal Feeding Our Future pandemic relief fraud scheme in Minnesota has been repatriated to the United States to confront charges.

The FBI reports that 42-year-old Abdikerm Abdelahi Eidleh from Burnsville, Minnesota, was taken into custody in Somalia on June 26 and extradited to the U.S. on Thursday.

Federal prosecutors claim that Eidleh masterminded a scam that swindled $250 million from taxpayers by taking advantage of federal child nutrition programs intended to aid at-risk children. Descriptions of this case suggest it ranks among the largest frauds in Minnesota’s history.

“Today marks a significant triumph in the FBI’s campaign against fraud,” expressed FBI Director Kash Patel. “With the Foreign Transfer of Custody of Abdikerm Abdelahi Eidleh, justice is served against an alleged leader of the $250 million ‘Feeding Our Future’ fraud scandal in Minnesota—where the FBI, alongside the Justice Department, has already secured over 70 guilty pleas from conspirators.”

Eidleh faces 31 counts, including conspiracy to commit wire fraud, wire fraud, conspiracy to commit federal programs bribery, federal programs bribery, conspiracy to commit money laundering, and money laundering.

Federal prosecutors said Eidleh was an employee of the Feeding Our Future (FOF) nonprofit, responsible for recruiting and supporting Federal Child Nutrition Program sites under Feeding Our Future’s sponsorship.

He and other FOF employees allegedly solicited and received bribes and kickbacks from people and companies seeking approval to operate fraudulent Federal Child Nutrition Program sites.

Feeding Our Future allegedly operated a “pay-to-play” scheme in which operators of fraudulent meal sites kicked back a portion of their illicit proceeds to employees, including Eidleh, often disguising the payments as consulting fees through shell companies, according to an indictment previously reported by News Media.

Prosecutors also said Eidleh created Federal Child Nutrition Program sites using nominee owners, then falsely claimed the sites were serving meals to thousands of children each day.

“These are individuals who stole critical, taxpayer-funded resources from kids in need during the COVID pandemic—and Eidleh was allegedly right at the top of the operation,” Patel said.

According to prosecutors, Eidleh deposited more than $5 million in fraud proceeds, kickbacks, and bribes into accounts associated with shell companies he created in an effort to conceal the source of the money.

In 2022, Eidleh fled the U.S., Patel said, noting that criminals should be aware that “no matter where you try to hide, we will find you.”

In May, Aimee Bock, who headed the Feeding Our Future nonprofit, was sentenced to nearly 42 years in prison for her role in the fraud.

NYC Street Showdown: Skateboarder vs. Mercedes Driver Captured

0

They couldn’t simply let this one roll by.

In a bizarre scuffle on the streets of East Village Tuesday, a wiry skateboarder clashed with a driver of a Mercedes, resulting in an altercation neither seemed prepared for, a now-famous viral video reveals.

The one-minute footage, shared on X, is a rollercoaster of surprises: from the skateboard being used as a makeshift weapon, striking the SUV, to the driver retaliating by seizing it, only for the board to change hands yet again.

Spoiler alert: the driver eventually lost the skirmish, finding himself trapped in a headlock, as confirmed by both police reports and the video.

“Holy f–k, New York is lit!” exclaims Michael O’Hara, 35, a freelance photographer, at the conclusion of the clip, which he posted on X in the early hours of Wednesday.

The melee unfolded Tuesday along St. Marks Place near Second Avenue when the driver — a 34-year-old man — argued with the still-unidentified skateboarder.

O’Hara, who exclusively talked to The Post, said he missed what sparked the street fight, but bystanders told him that the motorist had almost struck a skateboarder with dyed blonde hair and another man with the SUV.

The shouting match didn’t seem out-of-the-ordinary for a New York City street until the blond skater picked up the skateboard and smashed the SUV’s front windshield, O’Hara said Thursday.

“I’ve seen some crazy s–t in Florida, but I’ve never seen anyone once put a skateboard through (a window),” the Sunshine State native joked.

The video shot by O’Hara picks up moments after the skateboarder smashed the windshield, and shows him club the car two more times before throwing the board against it.

After the skateboard ricocheted to the sidewalk, the irate driver ran out and picked the board up, using it to land a body blow against its owner, the video shows.

The pair of pint-sized men — who O’Hara joked were “two 4-foot-6 dudes” — then awkwardly scuffle until the skateboarder throws the motorist to the ground, according to the video.

The skateboarder then picks up the board once more and smashes it over the driver’s head — all while a woman dressed in white, who was in the car, screams, “Stop,” the footage shows.

“Oh, my God,” O’Hara can be heard on the video as the sound of the board hitting the man’s head echoed.

The boarder then put the driver into a headlock as bystanders try to get them to break it up.

“He attacked me,” the skateboarder yells.

“He hit me with his car,” another man, who was apparently with the skateboarder when the fight started, screams at the onlookers.

The video ends with O’Hara walking around the damaged SUV and panning back to show the driver still being held in a headlock by the skateboarder.

O’Hara said he walked away at that point, opting to not let the unpleasantness ruin his “nice day.” He later shared the video on social media, where it racked up more than 3 million views on X alone.

NYPD cops responded to find that the driver lost consciousness while in the headlock, police said. Medics took him to Bellevue hospital in stable condition, officials said.

The skateboarder left before police arrived and no one has been arrested in the ongoing investigation, police said.

Many X commenters lambasted O’Hara for not trying to break up the fight, but he said that wasn’t his business.

“You’re clearly not from here,” he said to the haters.

“This is New York City, we mind our own business here… A stupid fight like that between two grown men, I’m not going to get involved in it.”

After learning the driver lost consciousness, O’Hara said he shouldn’t have opted to fight in the first place.

“Don’t get out of a car,” he said. “There’s no way in hell I would’ve gotten out of a car to fight somebody.”

Kai Trump’s Unique Political Statement Stuns at ESPY Awards

0

Kai Trump made headlines with an unexpected political statement during her appearance at the star-studded ESPY Awards on Wednesday evening, subtly acknowledging her new stepmother along the way.

The 19-year-old dazzled on the red carpet in a custom-designed, glittering gold gown by Stacey Bendet, the creative mind behind Alice + Olivia, and a close friend of Bettina Anderson.

Often likened to the Oscars of sports, the ESPYs celebrate the year’s pinnacle achievements in athletics and took place at the iconic Lincoln Center in New York City.

The President’s granddaughter gave several interviews on the red carpet, including one with Sportico, during which she admitted she isn’t particularly interested in politics.

While speaking with a reporter, Kai was asked about her recent visit to the UFC 250 event at the White House to celebrate Donald Trump’s 80th birthday, and her views on how politics intertwine with sports.

‘To be honest, I tend to steer clear of politics—it’s not really my thing,’ she shared, ‘But I thought the UFC event was fantastic, and I really enjoyed the experience.’

‘Especially having veterans in the stadium as well, that’s where you can kind of combine the 250 point of view on it.’

Instead, the University of Miami freshman emphasized that her focus is on inspiring the next generation of female golfers.

‘Honestly, I kind of stay out of politics completely, it’s not my thing, but I think the UFC event was great and it was really cool being there,’ the 19-year-old said on the red carpet

‘I just like showing my life and showing how you can still be an athlete, and you can still do a ton of cool things, enjoy a ton of other things,’ she added. ‘I kind of like just showing people that everything’s possible.’

‘I love showing the new generation my progress through college, eventually, and how I got to where I am today.’

While she may not want to be involved in politics, Kai seems to be extremely close with her family, as she’s been pictured more than ever alongside her grandpa, President Trump, in recent months.

She has also spent a lot of time with her aunts, Tiffany Trump and Ivanka Trump, this summer, as they all traveled to the Bahamas together to celebrate her dad, Donald Trump Jr’s, nuptials to Bettina.

On Wednesday night, Kai’s Alice + Olivia dress featured a slit in the thigh and silver beading on the straps and top.

She paired the look with jewelry from Dallas-based company RW Fine, wearing the brand’s 18k yellow gold MeMe’s Charlie Cloud tennis necklace, which retails for $310,000, as well as a pair of $28,750 18k yellow gold Pruitt Multi Mixed Shape Front & Back Dangle Earrings.

She brought everything together with a pair of McKinsey Multi Mixed Shape Diamond Dangle Ear Climbers from RW Fine, which retail for $23,125, and some strappy gold heels.

Bendet, the founder of Alice + Olivia, attended Bettina’s intimate Bahamas wedding in late May, as well as her Mar-a-Lago bridal shower.

She also gave a subtle nod to her new stepmom with her glittering gold outfit. Kai walked the red carpet just before the ceremony, draped in a custom, shimmering gown made by one of Bettina Anderson's besties, Stacey Bendet, founder of Alice + Olivia

In December 2024, the CEO even spoke to the Daily Mail about her friendship with the Palm Beach socialite, gushing that she is the ‘kindest soul.’

‘I have been friends with Bettina for a decade, she is the kindest soul, she has the biggest heart, she is witty and wise, hilariously funny and an Ivy League grad – anyone who says a word otherwise is just another societal example of women fixating on competing versus empowering,’ Bendet told the Daily Mail in response to rumors of the model being a ‘social climber.’

‘Don adores her for good reasons,’ Bendet added.

Last month, Kai was seen wearing the designer once again, sporting one of their mini dresses at the UFC Freedom 250 event.

The dress, which retailed for $1,595 but is now on sale for just under $400, is decorated with beaded, scalloped detailing all over.

Kai paired the mini dress with a pair of silver heels and accessorized with silver jewelry.

She also wore a casual look from the brand while spending time at the White House for Freedom 250 celebrations, sporting a blue and white striped tee and baggy white cargo pants with red trim at the waist.

Over the past few years, Kai has become somewhat of a famous social media influencer, as she usually shares vlogs that showcase the behind-the-scenes of her life, which often include trips to the White House.

She typically stays mum on politics, but during a January appearance on Logan Paul's Impaulsive podcast, she revealed that she would never want to go into politics, like other members of her family, such as her father, Don Jr

‘I would never run, I don’t want anything to do with politics, because I feel like politics is such a dangerous thing, and I think if both sides met in the middle, everyone would be so much more happier,’ she explained at the time.

Kai also emphasized the different dangers that come with social media these days, especially in the political landscape.

‘There’s radical left, there’s radical right, and there’s a lot of people that get too extreme, and that’s where social media really ties into it, because social media kind of makes your Instagram or your feed kind of either be really one way or the other,’ she said.

‘There’s not a lot of things on social media where you’re very much in the middle, and I think that makes some people crazy, and some people buy into it too much, I think that’s the best way to say it.’

Kalshi Engages with Federal Authorities on $100K Bets Linked to Trump Teleprompter Speeches

Kalshi, a prominent prediction market platform, alerted federal regulators to suspicious trading activities related to President Trump’s speeches. These trades reportedly involve the president’s longtime teleprompter operator.

Robert DeNault, Kalshi’s head of enforcement and legal counsel, announced via social media, “The Kalshi surveillance team quickly flagged, investigated, and referred these trades to the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC).”

DeNault further stated, “We have been working alongside regulators on this issue and have provided all evidence we gathered, consistent with our protocol for any referral.”

While DeNault did not name the individual involved, his comments come in response to an ABC News report naming Gabriel Perez. Perez, who began working for Trump in 2016, is reportedly in discussions with the CFTC over accusations of leveraging insider knowledge of Trump’s speeches for trading on Kalshi.

A source acquainted with the matter confirmed to The Hill that Perez is collaborating with the CFTC, the regulatory body overseeing prediction markets.

Kalshi said its surveillance, as well as some market makers, flagged trades in mention markets related to public statements by Trump that didn’t follow the normal pattern of buying and selling.

Mention markets allow users to place wagers on whether someone will say a particular word or phrase. The markets in this case involved common words, such as country names, economic words, general political topics, campaign phrases and social issues, according to Kalshi.

The company’s surveillance analysts discovered the account holder was employed by the federal government and served as a teleprompter operator, prompting them to freeze the account holding more than $90,000 in profits and ultimately refer the case to the CFTC.

Prediction markets have increasingly come under scrutiny in recent months over concerns about insider trading.

In one of the most high-profile incidents, a U.S. Army soldier was charged in April for using confidential information about the operation to capture Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro to place bets on Polymarket. He allegedly raked in more than $400,000.

Both Kalshi and Polymarket have announced efforts to crack down on insider trading in recent months. Kalshi unveiled new guardrails in March to block politicians, athletes and other relevant individuals from trading in certain markets. Last month, the company also said it would start requiring users in some markets to share information about their employers.

Polymarket similarly rolled out updated rules in March clarifying that trading on stolen confidential information and illegal tips or by those who can influence the outcome was prohibited on the platform.

Nationwide Recall: Pillsbury Rolls Pulled for Potential Glass Contamination Risk

0

In a concerning development this week, General Mills has initiated a recall of approximately 736,000 Pillsbury bread rolls, prompted by fears they might contain glass fragments. This cautionary measure was announced via a notice from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The recall specifically targets 3,080 cases of “Hard Roll Dough,” with each case containing 180 rolls, leading to a sum of 554,400 rolls. Additionally, the recall covers 1,260 cases of “Kaiser Roll Dough,” each case holding 144 rolls, totaling 181,440 rolls. The alert highlights the potential presence of “foreign material (glass)” in these products.

General Mills distributed these potentially compromised frozen bread rolls to numerous states including Arkansas, California, Florida, and Georgia, among others. The reach spans from coast to coast, affecting both northern and southern regions.

Notably, the rolls are primarily intended for commercial use rather than personal consumption, as detailed on General Mills’ website.

The Pillsbury Kaiser roll product description emphasizes “Thaw, proof and bake” as an easy solution for efficient back-of-house preparation, allowing businesses to minimize labor efforts.

The food manufacturer initiated the recall on June 19.

In addition to Pillsbury, General Mills owns popular brands such as Betty Crocker, Cheerios, Lucky Charms and Nature Valley.

Blue Angels’ Dazzling Flyover Sparks Buzz, Hegseth & Trump React

0

In a vibrant display that captivated many, Secretary of War Pete Hegseth and other supporters of Donald Trump expressed their excitement on social media following the Navy Blue Angels’ attention-grabbing flyover at a Florida beach on Thursday.

Videos circulating online captured the moment beachgoers erupted into cheers as two jets from the Blue Angels demonstration team made a striking low pass over Pensacola Beach on Wednesday. Public reactions on social platforms ranged from admiration and envy among those wishing to witness the spectacle firsthand, to criticism from others who frowned upon the event as mere theatrics.

Expressing his views on the event, Hegseth wrote on X, “The flyovers will continue until morale improves.”

Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell shared a photo of one of the aircraft performing a maneuver during the flyover and wrote, “Carry on Patriots.”

Eric Trump also responded by sharing an ABC News report on X, writing, “Can’t stand the manufactured outrage by the low-T mainstream media. This was undoubtedly the highlight of these people’s day…”

The ABC News report Eric Trump shared said Navy officials confirmed in a statement to the outlet that Blue Angels leadership is “reviewing the circumstances surrounding the maneuver and conducting a thorough safety review.”

The Blue Angels did not immediately respond to News Media’s request for comment.

The flyover came during Wednesday morning’s annual “Breakfast with the Blues” event, which marks the start of Red, White and Blues Week and gives spectators a chance to watch the Navy’s flight demonstration squadron practice over the Gulf Coast.

Local news outlet WALA-TV reported that this year’s event drew one of its largest crowds in recent memory, with the Casino Beach and Quietwater parking lots filling by about 7 a.m. Thousands lined the beach as the Blue Angels spent about two hours practicing ahead of this weekend’s air show.

Brenda Bennett, who has attended the event for decades, told the newspaper she had never seen a crowd this large.

“I’ve been coming since 1997 and this is the best kept secret, but I think the secret’s out because there’s more people here than normally,” Bennett said.

Theresa Smith and Sheri Marinovich said they had to park farther away than usual because of the crowds but said the extra walk was worth it.

“They’re showing out,” the pair told the newspaper. “They love to put on a show for the breakfast crowd. You feel like they’re just so much closer and we get to hear them talking on the radio and they do different maneuvers than they do for the show.”

Many spectators told the outlet the event felt especially meaningful following the recent America 250 celebrations. Bennett said she hopes Americans continue celebrating “our freedom that we have here in the United States.”

The Blue Angels are scheduled to practice again Thursday before public performances Friday and Saturday.
