CHICAGO (WLS) — Early Sunday morning, a high-speed chase through downtown Chicago led to an officer discharging a firearm. A driver, part of a group of vehicles accelerating across the city, managed to avoid a tire spike as they headed towards the police, the Chicago Police Department reported.
Authorities responded just after 3 a.m. to a report of a sizable crowd gathered in the 300-block of East Balbo Drive, in the vicinity of Grant Park.

Upon arrival, officers encountered a fleet of vehicles racing down the street, prompting them to deploy a device intended to deflate the tires of speeding cars.
One vehicle, identified as a black sedan, evaded the deflation tool and sped towards an officer standing on duty.
In response, the officer discharged their weapon at the car, striking the vehicle without causing any injuries to those inside, confirmed police.
The officer suffered a minor ankle injury and was treated and released from the hospital.
The sedan’s driver was taken into custody.
No other injuries were reported. CPD’s investigative Response Team is investigating.
The Civilian Office of Police Accountability is also investigating, and the office involved will be placed on routine administrative duties for a minimum period of 30 days.

INTERACTIVE SAFETY TRACKER Track crime and safety in your neighborhood
These days, a quick online search can easily lead you to alarming claims about everyday household items being linked to cancer.
Currently under scrutiny are the fabric softener and dryer sheets you commonly use to keep your laundry soft and static-free.
However, the science behind these viral assertions is far more nuanced than one might think. The discussion revolves around the potential health impacts of certain chemicals present in these everyday products.
While many claim dryer sheets and fabric softener cause cancer, the science behind these products is more nuanced.
It’s important to clarify that fabric softeners and dryer sheets, used to freshen up clothes, do not directly result in illness. They are not formulated with active carcinogenic ingredients.
The concern, rather, stems from certain components within these products that can emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Under certain conditions, VOCs can pose health risks both in the short and long term, contributing to a complex discussion about their safety.
Namely, consumers should keep an eye out for fragrance ingredients, impurities or manufacturing byproducts.
A study from 2011 and one from 2016 found that dryer vents emitted VOCs when fragranced laundry products were used.
Two of the emissions identified, acetaldehyde and benzene, are classified as carcinogenic hazardous air pollutants by the Environmental Protection Agency.
However, further research wasn’t conducted to determine if the emissions cause cancer in people.

Other items may contain blends of VOCs, including phthalates and benzyl acetate, which is often used for a floral scent.
Phthalates have been shown to disrupt endocrines, or natural hormones like estrogen and testosterone, potentially causing reproductive, neurological or developmental issues.
A review of studies also suggests that compounds in scented products — such as phthalates and parabens — have possible links to health concerns like cancer.
However, more research is needed to better understand those links.
Manufacturers may also group multiple chemicals under the name “fragrance” or “perfume” on labels, resulting in unintentional exposure to harmful chemical mixtures.
Unlike detergents, which wash out, softeners are designed to stay in clothing, increasing exposure in two ways: inhalation of the vapors and skin absorption as clothes and bedding make contact with skin.
While there isn’t strong evidence directly linking dryer sheets and fabric softeners to cancer, there could still be some risk.
But experts warn risk factor when using certain laundry products depends on several factors, such as frequency, dose and duration of exposure.
“But because fragrance-related emissions aren’t always obvious from the label, many experts recommend minimizing unnecessary fragrance exposure when practical,” Dr. Krushangi Patel, a medical oncologist at City of Hope, told Parade.
Looking to shed that stubborn belly fat? You might be surprised to learn that bed-based exercises can be remarkably effective in targeting this tricky area.
>
Few things are more aggravating than a belly overhang when trying to button up your favorite jeans. This unwelcome abdominal fat tends to sneak up on you, especially when regular exercise falls by the wayside as the years pass. Hormonal fluctuations and changes in body composition amplify this issue. For those looking to transform their fitness routine and reclaim their waistlines, we sought insights from Denise Chakoian, a seasoned fitness trainer and the owner of Core Cycle and Fitness LaGree in Rhode Island. With over 16 years of experience coaching individuals across various ages and fitness levels, she shares five bed exercises that promise to help.
These types of exercises not only engage the core effectively but also provide a unique workout environment that differs from the standard gym setting.
Denise explains, “When lying down, your spine isn’t compressed as it would be when standing or sitting, allowing the deep core muscles to engage without the usual tension. The mattress’s softness forces your body to stabilize more, which paradoxically prompts the right muscles to fire up. Because there’s no impact and you’re not supporting your body weight, your joints are spared from stress and load.”
This scenario prompts the activation of muscles responsible for spinal stability, rather than the larger “surface muscles” that tend to dominate during more intense workouts. Such surface muscles, specifically targeted by crunches and similar exercises, do little to address belly fat.
Below, Chakoian walks us through five bed exercises to add to your routine.
Dead Bug
Lie flat on your back with your arms extended toward the ceiling and knees lifted in a tabletop position.
Press your back into the mattress and engage your core.
Lower one arm and the opposite leg, counting to 3 seconds.

Perform 3 sets of 8 slow and controlled reps.
Pelvic Tilt
Begin by lying flat on your back with your knees bent and feet flat on the mattress.

The shocking news of Senator Lindsey Graham’s unexpected death at the age of 71 has prompted the Federal Bureau of Investigation to join local authorities in their ongoing inquiries, a development that further fuels speculation surrounding the circumstances of his passing.
Graham, who served South Carolina since 2002 with a robust reputation in the Senate, was reported to have passed away, according to an announcement from his office early on Sunday, citing a ‘brief and sudden illness’ as the reason.
Details emerged that a 911 call reporting ‘cardiac arrest’ had been made from Graham’s home around 8:30 p.m., although the definitive cause of death has yet to be publicly confirmed, as several media outlets have noted.
In a statement on the social media platform X, FBI Director Kash Patel asserted the bureau’s commitment to providing support to local authorities, ensuring all possible resources were available for the investigation.
Throughout his career, Graham was known as an outspoken advocate for U.S. involvement in international conflicts, such as the ongoing tensions between Russia and Ukraine and hostilities in Iran.
Amidst the July 4th recess break in Washington, DC this past week, Graham travelled to Ukraine, met with President Volodymyr Zelensky, and even visited a drone facility which was later destroyed by the Russians.
Graham has also been targeted by Iranian leaders. An Iranian State TV host noted in a Sunday broadcast that she congratulated ‘the Iranian people on the death U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham, who has been sent to hell.’
Political commentators, liberal and conservative alike, have stepped up with their own theories about Graham’s cause of death.

Megan Mobbs, Director Center for American Safety & Security at the Independent Women’s Forum, a conservative think tank, noted on X that ‘cardiac arrest tells us how his life ended. It does not tell us why his heart stopped.’
She also added that, ‘given the threat environment, the identities of America’s adversaries, and Senator Graham’s prominent role confronting them, the American people deserve certainty.’
‘That means a complete forensic autopsy, preservation of all relevant biological specimens, comprehensive toxicology and histology, and consultation with federal law enforcement and counterintelligence authorities,’ Mobbs concluded.
Conservative commentator Matt Van Swol shared a video of Graham on X from Ukraine this last week, noting, ‘I’m sorry, but Lindsey Graham dying out of the blue like this doesn’t make any sense at all.
‘We have him on camera yesterday looking perfectly healthy. None of this is making any sense,’ he added.
Right-wing journalist Laura Loomer called for there to be an ‘investigation,’ into Graham’s death, especially as Russian president Vladimir ‘Putin’s advisor Alexander Dugin called for Lindsey Graham to be “flattened” exactly 4 months ago.’
Townhall columnist Dustin Grage, however, shared that he was ‘told by a source in South Carolina that Senator Lindsey Graham has dealt with blood pressure issues since his 40s,’ also noting that, ‘His father also died of cardiac arrest at age 69.’
‘I know the conspiracy theories won’t stop, but sometimes life just happens. Not everything is a conspiracy,’ Grage added.
Top conservative talk radio host Dana Loesch commented on Grange’s post, noting the he agreed with his sentiment that Graham’s death appeared to be ‘sudden, but cardiac issues usually are.’
Trump shared a tribute to the late Senator on Truth Social shortly after the announcement was made.
‘Senator Lindsey Graham, one of the greatest people and Senators I have ever known, is dead! He was always working, and was a true American Patriot. Lindsey will be greatly missed!!! DETAILS AND ARRANGEMENTS TO FOLLOW. So sad!,’ Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.
Graham was one of Trump’s closest allies in the US Senate, consistently voting to enact the president’s agenda. The White House has lowered the flags to half-mast in his honor.
The senator was also a staunch supporter of Ukraine and Israel, and he advised the president on foreign policy matters pertaining to Russia and Iran.
In late March 2025, just a little more than a month after Trump took office, the president posted a lengthy endorsement of Graham, referring to the senator as ‘a wonderful friend.’
Vice President JD Vance posted his own lengthy tribute to Graham on Sunday, who he spent two years with as colleagues in US Senate, specifically adding that Graham ‘fought like hell for the things he believed in, and he was just as willing to go to bat for you when it counted.’
Congressman Jim Clyburn, the only Democrat representing South Carolina in Washington, also offered his condolences, sharing that their ‘political relationship was sometimes partisan and passionate, but always pleasant and productive on behalf of the people of South Carolina.’
Though Oslo is nearly 16,000 kilometres away from Sydney, that vast distance hasn’t deterred Norwegian football enthusiasts from bringing a slice of their homeland spirit to the iconic harbour city in celebration of Norway’s unprecedented World Cup journey.
Surprising many, Norway has carved a niche for itself as the dark horse in this year’s World Cup. Their stellar performance in the group stage, which involved victories over Côte d’Ivoire and the formidable five-time champion Brazil, propelled them into the quarter-finals, marking a historic first for Norwegian football.
For a nation with a population of merely 5.6 million and competing in only its fourth World Cup appearance, after a 28-year hiatus, this feat stands as truly extraordinary.
To mark this monumental achievement, members of the Norwegian community in Sydney assembled at the steps of the Sydney Opera House last Saturday. There, they engaged in the celebrated “Norwegian row,” one of the tournament’s most famous fan celebrations.
Prior to this lively celebration, Sophia Toftdahl, president of the Norwegian Australian Chamber of Commerce, expressed to SBS News the immense pride that envelops this close-knit community regarding their team’s achievements.
“[The team] are just being very humble about it, happy and celebrating, which is a very kind of Norwegian thing, and that makes us super proud,” she said.
Star striker Erling Haaland has become the face of Norway’s World Cup campaign and is in the race for the Golden Boot, awarded to the tournament’s top scorer, with seven goals, leaving him one behind France’s Kylian Mbappé and Argentina’s Lionel Messi who are tied at present.
Toftdahl said Haaland was a natural leader, but the squad’s success had been built on its collective approach.
“Whenever we’ve come together to watch the games, I’m hearing a lot of the Norwegians say the same things, like ‘look how well they play together, how they’re leveraging each other’s strengths, how no one has an ego’,” she said.
Toftdahl, who arrived in Australia as an international student in 2003, said the Norwegian Australian Chamber of Commerce was founded in 2014 to strengthen business links between the two countries while also celebrating Norwegian culture.
“You can take a Norwegian out of Norway, but not take Norway out of a Norwegian,” she said.
“We follow our traditions … [celebrating] our annual 17th of May [Norway’s Constitution Day] and Christmas events, when the community groups in different states get together, with traditional Norwegian food.”
‘Why not?’
Now, Norway hopes its fairytale run continues with an upset against England on Sunday.
“That’s the thing about being a dark horse, you know … taking the opportunity that’s in front of them,” Toftdahl said.
“This might be one of those few opportunities, and they’ve done so well, so why not?”
Stig Falster, co-president of the Norwegian Australian Chamber of Commerce, said Norway was traditionally a powerhouse at the Winter Olympics, but was now proving itself to be a footballing nation.
“Over the years, we’ve produced quite a few good players, like Erling Haaland, and he’s now obviously one of the faces of the football team,” he said.
“There are a couple of other good strikers in there, so the advantage we’ve got at the moment is that with him being in the centre … he attracts a lot of attention, which then actually opens up the possibility for some of the others [to score].
“England’s a good side, but looking at the way they faltered in their last game, I think we have a very good chance to beat them.”
According to the 2021 Census, nearly 4,000 Norwegian-born people live in Australia, while about 32,000 Australians are of Norwegian descent.
Eva Gaarder, head of the Australian chapter of the Association for Norwegian Students Abroad, said there were hundreds of Norwegian exchange students across Australia, with many organising watch parties or gathering at pubs to cheer on the national team.
“It’s a very close-knit community, you know. Norway is a small country, but we do have quite a bit of a Norwegian population down here,” she told SBS News.
“As Norwegians, we kind of know where to find each other.”
Gaarder admitted feeling a touch of FOMO (fear of missing out) as football fever swept across Norway.
“I don’t know if you’ve seen the videos or pictures of what Norway looks like right now, but there’s more people in the streets than there is on [Norway’s] Constitution Day,” she said.
More than 90,000 fans flooded the streets of Oslo after Norway’s 2-1 win over Brazil in the Round 16.
Tens of thousands more gathered at the Ullevaal stadium, where Norway plays its home games, watching on giant screens from long bar tables and benches, and throwing their drinks in the air at the final whistle.
So loud have the celebrations been that the country’s seismology institute, NORSAR, said it recorded earth tremors in the coastal city of Bergen when Haaland scored in Norway’s group game against Iraq.
Norway will take on England at Miami Stadium at 7am AEST on Sunday, which you can watch live and free on SBS or SBS On Demand.
You can watch all 104 matches of the FIFA World Cup 2026™ live, free and exclusive on SBS, SBS VICELAND and SBS On Demand.
Australia’s women’s cricket team vice-captain, Ashleigh Gardner, has reportedly ended her marriage with her wife under what the Daily Mail suggests are contentious circumstances.
The dissolution of their marriage is reportedly abuzz among the tightly-knit Southern Stars squad. Many team members are currently abroad following their victory against England in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup final at Lord’s on July 5.
Appointed as co-vice captain on January 28 alongside Tahlia McGrath, the 29-year-old Gardner tied the knot with her long-time partner Monica Wright in April 2025.
According to a source familiar with the matter, there was noticeable tension during the tour when Monica traveled to India to visit Gardner.
‘The situation was quite uncomfortable,‘ the insider revealed.
The vice-captain of Australia’s women’s cricket team, Ashleigh Gardner, has separated from her wife in what the Daily Mail understands is acrimonious circumstances
‘It was like something was a little bit off with Ash, but we thought it was because of the pressure of the World Cup.’
The insider said it was ‘just horrible’ when Wright arrived in India and Gardner didn’t seem like herself.
The Mail understands that Gardner and Wright had a heart-to-heart after they returned to their Northern Beaches home in Sydney following the World Cup.
‘When they got home, [Gardner] goes, “Hey, look, can we talk?” and she sat her down,’ the source claimed.
Gardner allegedly disclosed to Wright why things had been ‘off’ during her visit to India, leaving Wright ‘shattered’ and ‘distraught’.
The conversation effectively marked the end of the couple’s marriage.
The split was especially devastating for Wright because, according to the source, the couple had been discussing plans to start a family.
‘They were about to go to the fertility clinic. They had a booking that Monica had to cancel,’ said the spy.
Gardner, 29, who was appointed co-vice-captain on January 28, tied the knot with girlfriend Monica Wright (left) in April 2025
Gardner is understood to have moved out of the home the couple shared together in November, with Wright still living in their house.
‘Ash left one day. Monica came home and everything of Ash’s was gone, except for the rings,’ said the source.
‘She left the wedding rings in the cupboard. Just the box of wedding rings, and that was it.’
The Daily Mail understands that Gardner’s marriage breakdown sent shockwaves through the Southern Stars because Monica had been ‘around the team for five years’ and ‘knew them all’, according to the source.
‘Some of them are really good mates, and Monica has a very good relationship with a lot of [players] still. A lot of them are quite upset,’ added the insider.
‘She had messages from nearly all of the girls telling her how upset they were about it.’
The sport’s governing body is apparently aware of the marriage breakdown.
Our source claimed a disclosure was made to Cricket Australia’s National Selection Panel (NSP) when Gardner was appointed captain of the Women’s BBL team Sydney Sixes in November, shortly after her split from Wright.
She was later made co-vice-captain of the national team at the start of the year.
The Daily Mail contacted Cricket Australia, seeking comment and clarification.

Ashleigh Gardner and long-term partner Monica Wright were engaged in 2024
Richard Hinds, the respected former Fairfax sportswriter who now serves as Cricket Australia’s senior communications chief, simply said: ‘Yeah, no comment on that.’
Gardner was also contacted for comment.
While the captaincy meetings were happening, the insider says that Gardner had attempted to smooth things over with Wright.
However, it is understood the relationship could not be salvaged.
Gardner and Wright met on a dating app in 2020, with the couple later proposing to one another in April 2024.
They tied the knot in a rustic ceremony in the Blue Mountains in April 2025.
Debbie McGee has opened up about the heart-wrenching loss of her cherished husband, Paul Daniels. The couple shared 28 years of marriage before Paul’s devastating diagnosis with a rapidly progressing brain tumor, a glioblastoma that left him with merely weeks to live.
Reflecting on the moment when she learned of his illness, Debbie shared with The Telegraph: “When the neurosurgeon asked if Paul wanted to know his condition, he simply said, ‘No, tell Deb,’ and stepped out of the room.” The news was a complete shock to Debbie.
Paul had expressed a wish to remain uninformed about his health prognosis, leaving it to Debbie to communicate the difficult message to his three sons. “It’s the toughest call you could ever have to make,” Debbie recounted.
Faced with the harsh reality of his incurable condition, Debbie and Paul’s children decided against pursuing medical treatments that offered no promise of extending or enhancing his life.
During Paul’s final weeks, Debbie cared for him at their home near Henley-on-Thames. “He had the chance to spend time with his sons and grandchildren. The weather was lovely, allowing us to walk in the garden down to the water. Every afternoon, Paul enjoyed a Magnum ice cream, one of his favorites. I cherish those fond memories from that period,” she fondly remembered.
While Debbie admits that she’d sometimes cry when Paul wasn’t around, the TV star managed to stay in good spirits. “For the time he was at home – a month and five days – I was cheery. I put my makeup on and did my hair every day, and we shared loads of jokes. I just kept saying to myself, ‘Don’t look forward and don’t look back; concentrate on this minute.'”
While Paul had refrained from learning about his official diagnosis, Debbie notes that he eventually asked her to tell him what it was after suffering a fall in their bathroom. “I said, ‘Well, darling, do you really want to know?’ and he said yes, so I replied, ‘You’ve got a brain tumour.’ I don’t know whether he was ever able to absorb that information” she told The Telegraph.
Paul eventually passed away on March 17, 2016. He was 77. In the years since, Debbie has continued to live in their mansion in Wargrave, Berkshire, though she’s redecorated the bedroom where he died. In a bid to keep busy, Debbie has also continued to take on new projects and has appeared on Radio Berkshire, and in episodes of Loose Women, before competing in Strictly Come Dancing in 2017. More recently, she’s also become a patron for Brain Tumour Research.

Nearly three decades have passed since the release of one of cinema’s most electrifying action films, yet Run Lola Run retains the same vigor and freshness it had upon its debut in 1998. The film follows the adrenaline-fueled journey of the fiery pink-haired protagonist, Lola, portrayed by the dynamic Franka Potente. Her mission is to save her inept boyfriend, Manni, played by Moritz Bleibtreu, from a fatal fate. With a ticking clock of 20 minutes, Lola must find a way to provide Manni with the money he needs to pacify his drug lord boss, thus preventing him from robbing a grocery store.
The premise of the film might seem straightforward, but director Tom Tykwer injects an inventive twist by splitting Lola’s mission into three distinct narratives. Each pathway explores different possibilities and outcomes, showcasing how Lola’s tenacity and ingenuity propel her through the time-bending and surreal landscape of Berlin. These variations in the plot not only illustrate the challenges she faces but also emphasize the unpredictability of life. While some scenarios swing toward catastrophe, with Lola facing dire consequences such as [REDACTED], the real thrill lies in witnessing her spirited dynamism as she navigates a city teeming with eccentric characters like screaming babies, unfaithful fathers, and enigmatic nuns.
