Prove Your Fitness Over 60 with These 3 Essential Standing Exercises

0

Curious about how fit you are after crossing the 60 mark? Try these three simple standing tests to find out.

>

Fitness beyond 60 isn’t about lifting heavy weights or clocking marathon miles. It lies in those everyday actions we often take for granted. Standing up from a chair, keeping your balance on one leg, reaching for something above you, or just walking with confidence all require a harmonious blend of strength, coordination, and stability. In my experience as a fitness trainer, a few straightforward standing exercises can reveal more about a person’s overall fitness than many gym routines ever could.

Many people overestimate their fitness by comparing themselves to unrealistic benchmarks or much younger individuals. I focus on functional movements because they highlight the elements crucial for healthy aging. These exercises engage your legs, core, balance, and heart health all at once, mimicking the tasks you face daily. If you can perform them with ease and good form, you’re probably more fit than you think.

Over the years, I’ve evaluated hundreds of adults over 60 with these exercises, and they always distinguish between those who only exercise and those who move with exceptional grace. Forget about achieving perfection or breaking records. Concentrate on preserving good form from start to finish. The results can offer significant insights into your current functional fitness level.

5 Standing Exercises That Restore Hip Strength This Week, No Gym Needed After 60

Exercise 1: Sit-to-Stand Test

The sit-to-stand remains one of my favorite indicators of lower-body strength because it mirrors one of the most common movements you’ll perform every day. Strong quadriceps, glutes, hamstrings, and core muscles all contribute to completing this exercise with control. Clients who perform it easily usually walk farther, climb stairs more comfortably, and maintain greater independence as they age. The challenge isn’t simply standing up. It’s doing so repeatedly without using momentum or your hands.

How to Perform It

  • Sit near the front of a sturdy chair.
  • Cross your arms over your chest.
  • Stand completely.
  • Sit back down under control.
  • Repeat continuously for 30 seconds.
  • Count your completed repetitions.

Benchmark: Completing 12 to 17 controlled repetitions without using your hands indicates excellent lower-body strength for most adults over 60.

4 Standing Exercises That Flatten Apron Belly Faster Than Gym Sessions After 60

Exercise 2: Single-Leg Balance Hold

Balance often becomes the first physical quality to decline with age, making this one of the most valuable assessments I use. Standing on one leg requires the ankles, hips, core, and nervous system to communicate continuously while making tiny adjustments. Clients who hold this position comfortably usually demonstrate excellent coordination and lower-body stability. Strong balance also reduces fall risk while improving confidence during everyday movement.

How to Perform It

  • Stand next to a chair for safety.
  • Shift your weight onto one leg.
  • Lift the opposite foot slightly.
  • Keep your eyes focused ahead.
  • Avoid grabbing the chair unless necessary.
  • Time your longest hold.

Benchmark: Holding the position for 30 seconds or longer on each leg reflects top-tier stability for most adults over 60.

The 10-Minute Chair Routine That Restores Leg Strength Faster Than Gym Sessions After 60

Exercise 3: Standing March Endurance

Walking depends on far more than simply putting one foot in front of the other. Strong hip flexors, stable core muscles, good balance, and cardiovascular endurance all contribute to maintaining a smooth, confident stride. The standing march combines each of these qualities into one practical assessment. I often use it because it closely reflects the stamina needed for shopping, traveling, hiking, and enjoying an active lifestyle.

How to Perform It

  • Stand tall.
  • Lift one knee to hip height.
  • Lower with control.
  • Alternate legs continuously.
  • Maintain an upright posture.
  • Continue for one minute.

Benchmark: Completing the full 60 seconds without losing posture, shortening your stride, or needing extra support places you above average for functional endurance after 60.

DCLM Daily Manna 11 July 2026 — Treasure through Obedience

DCLM Daily Manna 11 July 2026 Devotional by Pastor W. F. Kumuyi — Treasure through Obedience

TOPIC: Treasure through Obedience (DCLM Daily Manna 11 July 2026)

KEY VERSE: And the people believed: and when they heard that the LORD had visited the children of Israel, and that he had looked upon their affliction, then they bowed their heads and worshipped – Exodus 4:31

TEXT: Exodus 4:24-31 (KJV)

24 And it came to pass by the way in the inn, that the Lord met him, and sought to kill him.

25 Then Zipporah took a sharp stone, and cut off the foreskin of her son, and cast it at his feet, and said, Surely a bloody husband art thou to me.

26 So he let him go: then she said, A bloody husband thou art, because of the circumcision.

27 And the Lord said to Aaron, Go into the wilderness to meet Moses. And he went, and met him in the mount of God, and kissed him.

28 And Moses told Aaron all the words of the Lord who had sent him, and all the signs which he had commanded him.

29 And Moses and Aaron went and gathered together all the elders of the children of Israel:

30 And Aaron spake all the words which the Lord had spoken unto Moses, and did the signs in the sight of the people.

31 And the people believed: and when they heard that the Lord had visited the children of Israel, and that he had looked upon their affliction, then they bowed their heads and worshipped.

DCLM Daily Manna For Today MESSAGE:

In our interconnected world, the call to align with divine purpose resonates deeply within the human spirit. Across diverse cultures and backgrounds, the universal principle remains: true fulfilment emerges from wholehearted obedience to a higher calling. This timeless truth transcends boundaries, inviting each of us to reflect on our commitment to the paths laid before us by the divine.

In the biblical narrative, we find a pivotal moment in Moses’ life. After being commissioned by God to lead the Israelites out of bondage, Moses faced a life-threatening situation due to his neglect in circumcising his son—a critical sign of God’s covenant with Abraham. It was through the decisive intervention of his wife, Zipporah, that Moses’ life was spared, underscoring the profound importance of adhering to divine instructions.

God’s favour is intricately linked to our obedience. Moses, despite his unique calling, could not bypass the foundational requirements of the covenant. This serves as a reminder that aspiring to fulfil divine purposes necessitates unwavering commitment to principles of holiness and obedience.

Zipporah’s swift and discerning action emphasises the vital role of spiritual awareness within the family unit. Her recognition of the gravity of the situation and prompt response after her initial resistance realigned their household with God’s directives. This narrative challenges us to evaluate our own lives and families. Are we attuned to areas requiring spiritual correction? Are we proactive in upholding the covenants we have established with God?

Following this act of obedience, Moses and Aaron came together, demonstrating unity in their mission. They performed the signs God provided, leading the Israelites to believe and respond with worship. This sequence of events illustrates that walking in obedience not only safeguards us but also paves the way for divine manifestations and breakthroughs. When we align our actions with God’s will, we create an environment where faith flourishes and God’s power is revealed.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
No position is a substitute to obedience, tweak it as you may.

California Beach Cleanup Turns Tragic as Man Loses Hand to Explosive Device

0

A man’s hand was severed when an explosive device unexpectedly detonated as he was clearing away fireworks remnants from a Northern California beach following the Fourth of July celebrations.

On Sunday, Jason Turner and his companion, Pamala, strolled along Point St. George Beach in Del Norte County with the goal of picking up trash, as detailed in a GoFundMe page created by his daughter Ashley Turner.

The online fundraiser describes how Turner came into contact with what appeared to be a “bomb-like device,” which detonated without warning.

Pamala recounted to CBS News Sacramento how she improvised a tourniquet using her shirt to control Turner’s bleeding until emergency personnel arrived on the scene.

The Del Norte County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement on social media that their deputies responded to reports of an explosion at the beach. When they arrived, they found Turner in the parking lot with a “significant injury to his hand.”

Ashley Turner said her father had to have his hand amputated and is waiting to undergo more surgeries. He is also dealing with vision and hearing loss as a result of the explosion, according to the GoFundMe.

“My dad will be going into additional surgeries for his eyes. He has metal fragments stuck in his eyes,” Ashley Turner wrote in a Wednesday update. “His right ear drum is blown and he has no hearing out of it.”

The fundraiser also explained that Turner is the sole provider for his family of seven, and two of his children are still in school.

As of Friday afternoon, nearly $100,000 has been raised to help with Turner’s ongoing medical costs. His daughter said his injuries may be permanent.

The Del Norte County Sheriff’s Office searched the beach and launched an investigation into what caused the explosion.

NYC Cracks Down on Hidden Charges as Mamdani Challenges Unseen Business Practices

0

New York City is stepping up the fight against hidden fees by introducing the country’s inaugural Click-to-Cancel rule. This groundbreaking measure simplifies the process of canceling elusive subscriptions, ranging from gym memberships to digital streaming platforms.

According to city officials, this new regulation is poised to help residents save an impressive $162.5 million annually, easing the financial burden on those with tight budgets.

Starting October 1, businesses that fail to comply with this rule will face penalties, with a $525 fine imposed for each infraction.

To provide clarity on the new mandate, the Department of Consumer and Worker Protection (DCWP) has published an informative video explaining its implementation.

This initiative was unveiled on July 10 at Manhattan’s Asser Levy Recreational Center. Notable figures included Mayor Zohran Mamdani, DCWP Commissioner Samuel A.A. Levine, Deputy Mayor for Economic Justice Julie Su, Senator Kristen Gonzalez, and former U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) Commissioner Lina Khan, who delivered remarks on the occasion.

“Right now, companies make it easy to sign up for things and hard to cancel them,”  Su said in her opening remarks. “They advertise one price and charge you another.”

When Mayor Mamdani stepped up to speak, he compared the increase in hidden recurring fees and the difficulty New Yorkers often face when trying to cancel them to a line in Adam Sandler’s 2006 comedy “Click.”

“Christopher Walken, in his role as Morty (the Angel of Death) begs us to ‘Consider the leprechaun,’” Mamdani stated. “‘He’s always chasing the pot of gold,’ Walken says. ‘But when he gets there, at the end of the day, it’s just cornflakes.’ Whether it’s an internet provider or a commercial gym, too many in our city have made and developed the bad habit of disguising cornflakes as gold.”

“New Yorkers reckon with (this) as almost every part of the customer experience when they are not told how much something truly costs, and when they get a mess of hidden fees that they never signed up for, cannot cancel, cannot afford,” he continued, emphasizing that the costs from hidden fees by airlines, credit card companies, hotel bookings and streaming services “add up.”

Per Consumer Reports, these sneaky fees cost the average family of four approximately $3,200 every year.

But wait, there’s potentially more — the Mamdani administration also proposed an adjacent act that would require fully transparent, all-in pricing on a slew of different services. A public comment period and public hearing on the additional rule will take place on Aug. 7.

“The Mamdani Administration is shutting the door on the era of fleecing New Yorkers with junk fees and subscription traps,” said Commissioner Levine.

“These two rules will ensure that the price you see is the price you pay—no hidden charges, no endless subscription services and no advantages for businesses that cheat. Requiring companies to compete on price will lower costs for all New Yorkers and level the playing field for honest businesses.”

Mother Found Guilty Again in Child Homicide Case

In a grim recurrence of tragedy, a 41-year-old mother from Ohio is set to return to prison. Krystal D. Krause has admitted her involvement in the death of her second child, over a decade after she was incarcerated for a similar incident with her first child.

Appearing in Lake County Court on Thursday, Krause pled guilty to charges of reckless homicide and child endangerment concerning the 2023 death of her 2-month-old son, referred to in court as “DK,” as revealed in court documents.

This plea marks Krause’s second conviction following an earlier incident in 2009 when her 3-year-old son tragically drowned.

During the recent court proceedings, prosecutors disclosed new details about DK’s tragic demise. According to reports by CBS affiliate WOIO, DK suffocated after being placed in an unsafe sleeping environment, despite repeated warnings from doctors and caregivers about appropriate practices for infant sleep. This revelation was made public for the first time during the hearing.

A recently unsealed indictment alleged Krause, acting as the child’s parent, “recklessly” created a “substantial risk” to the infant’s health and safety by violating her duty of care and ultimately causing his death.

Officers with the Wickliffe Police Department on Nov. 15, 2023, responded to the family’s home on Ridge Road after receiving a report of an unresponsive infant, Cleveland NBC affiliate WKYC reported. First responders found the 2-month-old boy face down atop Krause’s bed. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

After an investigation, the case was presented to a Lake County grand jury, which returned the indictment in April, court records show.

The guilty plea marks the second time Krause has been convicted in the death of one of her children.

Court records show Krause was indicted in Summit County in 2009 on charges of involuntary manslaughter and child endangering following the death of her 3-year-old son.

According to WKYC’s reporting on that earlier case, investigators said the boy drowned after wandering outside and falling into a swimming pool while Krause was inside the home. She told police she had gone to the bathroom for about 10 minutes while the child was playing in the living room before discovering what had happened.

Under a plea agreement, the involuntary manslaughter charge was reduced to reckless homicide, and she pleaded guilty to reckless homicide and child endangering before receiving a two-year prison sentence.

Records show Krause was arrested April 9 in the current case after the grand jury returned the indictment two days earlier. She initially pleaded not guilty before changing her plea Thursday. She is represented by the Lake County Public Defender’s Office.

Krause is scheduled to appear for her sentencing hearing on Aug. 13, according to court records. Court records indicate she is facing between 18 months and six years in prison along with a fine of up to $20,000.

Heartbroken Mother Shares Last Moments with Son Before Tragic July 4th Journey

Christine Wonsley, the grieving mother of Nolan Wells, recently shared a poignant memory of her son’s last words to her before his untimely death. The heartbreaking revelation adds yet another layer of tragedy to a story already filled with sorrow.

Nolan Wells, an 18-year-old college football athlete, went missing during a seemingly carefree Fourth of July outing. He ventured to the secluded Horn Island in Mississippi with friends, eager to enjoy a boating adventure. What should have been a memorable day with friends ended tragically, casting a shadow over the summer festivities.

The search for Nolan concluded in heartbreak as his body was discovered the following Monday. Investigators worked quickly to confirm his identity, relying on dental records to provide the conclusive answer everyone dreaded.

In a heartfelt recollection shared during a press conference in Harlem, Wonsley painted a vivid picture of her last moments with her son. Fondly, she recalled how Nolan had prepared a salmon dinner before heading over to stay the night with one of the friends who would accompany him on the ill-fated trip.

Reflecting on their final exchange, she recounted with emotion, “After dinner, he simply said, ‘Hey mom, I’m about to go; love you.’ It was a hug, a kiss, and he was off,” Wonsley shared, responding to questions from The Post. Her words are a bittersweet testament to a young life full of promise and prematurely cut short.

Birmingham Man’s 20-Year Prison Term: Convicted Murderer Faces Gun and Drug Charges

0

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — In a significant legal development, a man from Birmingham with a past murder conviction has been handed a 20-year prison sentence on gun and drug charges, once again steering him into the clutches of the law.

Francis Williams, aged 33, was sentenced to 240 months in prison with an additional 10 years of supervised release. His transgressions included the distribution of methamphetamine, as well as using and carrying a firearm amidst drug-trafficking activities. These charges resulted from his guilty plea entered this past March.

According to court records, the saga began when Williams sold methamphetamine on two separate occasions in April and May 2023, with a confidential informant tipping off authorities. Notably, he allegedly brandished a weapon during one of these transactions. By September 2023, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency had issued an arrest warrant against him for methamphetamine trafficking.

Law enforcement finally apprehended Williams on January 6, 2025, as he was departing a Birmingham residence. The subsequent search revealed multiple firearms in his possession, including a “Glock switch.” Due to his history of serious felony convictions, including the 2013 murder case, Williams was already prohibited from possessing firearms.

Controversy Surrounds Hurricanes Owner Tom Dundon’s Decision to Include Family Names on Stanley Cup

0

NHL enthusiasts are expressing outrage as Carolina Hurricanes owner Tom Dundon has taken the unusual step of inscribing his family’s names on the revered Stanley Cup. This move has stirred additional controversy because he not only included them but placed their names at the very top of the list.

The NHL Cup allows for a maximum of 55 names to be engraved, a privilege usually reserved for those closely tied to a team’s success after a championship. Tom Dundon, however, chose to include six names from his immediate family, listing his wife Veruschka and their five children: Caden, Dax, Drew, Blake, and Tagan.

By doing so, Dundon and his family occupy seven spots on the Cup, which some argue could have been used to honor other deserving individuals within the organization who contributed significantly to the team’s accomplishments.

The primary grievance for many is that several family members do not officially hold any roles within the organization. This decision has sparked a debate about the propriety and tradition associated with inscribing names on the Stanley Cup.

Interestingly, there is a precedent for family names on the Cup. The Detroit Red Wings memorialized nine members of the Ilitch family for the 1997, 1998, 2002, and 2008 championships. However, according to The Athletic, each of these family members had official capacities as part owners or team vice presidents, which lent legitimacy to their inclusion.

The Florida Panthers reportedly did the same last season when the Viola family had five total family members engraved on the Cup –– although they all held titles, including alternate governors.

The Hurricanes do not meet such criteria with the family inclusion.

Still, the names are engraved and fans are not thrilled about it.

“We won’t be commenting as an organization,” a spokesperson for the Hurricanes told The Athletic.

The processes detailed on the official NHL website describe eligibility requirements for engravings, and it appears there were inconsistencies.

“A player is required to have appeared in at least 41 regular-season games with a team, or one Stanley Cup Final game, to be eligible to have his name engraved on the trophy. In 1994, a stipulation was added to allow a team to petition the Commissioner for permission to have players’ names put on the Stanley Cup if extenuating circumstances prevented them from being available to play. The management staff engraved on the trophy is determined by the team. However, it must be approved by the Hockey Hall of Fame and NHL.”

The Hockey Hall of Fame (HHOF) responded to an email from The Athletic on the situation.

“Hockey Operations at the league (NHL) office in Toronto signs off on the names that go on the Stanley Cup. HHOF is not involved in this process.”

It’s a bizarre response considering what the league’s official rules state, and fans are still livid.

The Hurricanes defeated the Golden Knights in six games in the Stanley Cup Finals.

“Dumb Tom Dundon wasted so much space on the Stanley Cup by adding his useless children to it,” one particularly harsh critic on X wrote.

“Children who contributed nothing to the success of that team. What a self serving prick. Shameful.”

Iran Targets Gulf Military Bases Amidst Rising Tensions and Anti-US Warnings

0

Tensions flared in the Gulf on Thursday as Iran’s military forces launched an offensive targeting U.S. military infrastructure situated in neighboring Gulf states. This move came in the wake of American strikes on Iran’s southern coastal and eastern regions, further jeopardizing an already fragile ceasefire agreement that has been in place for three weeks.

On the same day, Iran was preparing for the burial of its Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei at Mashhad, the country’s most sacred site. The solemn event marked the end of a week filled with mass funerals and public demonstrations. Khamenei was killed during a U.S. airstrike on February 28, which had ignited the current conflict.

The U.S. military’s recent operations targeted Iran in a bid to secure the Strait of Hormuz, after Iran posed a threat by targeting three commercial tankers in the strategic waterway. This was part of the U.S.’s wider strategy to maintain open sea channels vital for international trade and energy supplies.

This escalated assault came just after U.S. President Donald Trump announced that he regarded the ceasefire with Iran as “over,” while hinting at the possibility of further negotiations.

According to state media reports, Iranian officials stated that U.S. attacks resulted in the deaths of 14 individuals and injured 78 more across five provinces on the dates of July 8 and 9. Among the targeted infrastructures was a rail bridge crucial for trade with Russia and China, as reported by the Fars news agency.

Several explosions were heard on Thursday morning in Iran’s Bushehr province, the semi-official Mehr news agency reported. Bushehr is home to a Russian-built nuclear power plant.

US military sites in Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain targeted

Iran’s army said in a statement released by state media that it had targeted US Patriot systems with drones in Kuwait, an early warning site in Qatar (satellite antenna) and a fuel storage facility of the US army in Bahrain.

Kuwait said its armed forces had engaged with a cruise missile, three ballistic missiles and 10 drones in its airspace, and that one person had been injured from falling shrapnel.

Qatar, which hosts the largest US military base in the region and has often mediated between Washington and its adversaries, including Tehran, called for a return to diplomacy.

In a phone call with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Aragchi, Qatar’s Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani also condemned attacks targeting commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.

While Iran has not claimed responsibility for the ship attacks, analysts say Tehran uses such actions to gain leverage in negotiations.

The Strait of Hormuz handled about a fifth of global oil supplies before the war erupted on 28 February with US and Israeli strikes against Iran.

Tehran has since taken effective control of the strait, allowing it to force a stalemate in its confrontation with the world’s most powerful military.

“The US has yet to learn that bullying and breaking its commitments no longer come without a cost. Let me be clear: If you strike, you will be struck back,” Iran’s top negotiator, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, wrote on X.

“The Strait of Hormuz will be reopened only under Iranian arrangements, not through US threats,” wrote Ghalibaf, who is also speaker of Iran’s parliament.

The US Central Command (CENTCOM) said on Wednesday its forces had struck approximately 90 Iranian military targets, including air defence systems, coastal surveillance assets, missile and drone storage sites, naval capabilities, and military logistics infrastructure along Iran’s coastline.

“The United States is holding Iran accountable for recent unjustified aggression against commercial shipping and civilian crews freely navigating a vital international waterway,” CENTCOM said in a statement.

“This is in retribution for yesterday’s bombing of ships by Iran. If it happens again, it will get much worse!” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform on Wednesday.
