Roadside Corn Vendor Discloses Earning ₦750k Monthly from Roasted Corn Sales

In the bustling city of Ibadan, a roadside roasted corn seller named Mrs. Lateef Rukayat has found prosperity in a surprising shift of careers. By transitioning from her initial profession in hairdressing to selling roasted corn, she has significantly improved her family’s financial situation. Now, her venture is bringing in an impressive ₦750,000 monthly, allowing her to support two of her six children as they pursue higher education.

During an interview with Tribune On The Street, Rukayat shared that her decision to leave behind hairdressing came after the business began to decline. The economic viability just wasn’t there anymore, prompting her to seek better opportunities.

Her choice to dive into the roasted corn market in 2021 proved to be a fortuitous one, as it enabled her to provide for her family despite facing the country’s tough economic conditions.

From hairdressing to roasted corn

Rukayat fondly recalled her beginnings in hairdressing, describing it as both her first profession and a cherished ambition. However, when the income from this passion waned, she knew it was time to explore other avenues for financial stability.

“Hairdressing was my hard-earned profession; it was my dream from early on, and I even celebrated completing my training,” she explained. “I ventured into roasting corn when my hairstyling business wasn’t progressing. All my children are in school, and I have two currently attending higher institutions.”

She disclosed that she started the roasted corn business in January 2021 with money borrowed through a local lending scheme known as “Network.” According to her, the loan, despite attracting interest, gave her the capital needed to purchase her first bag of corn.

Rising costs make business more challenging

The businesswoman dismissed the belief that roasted corn trading requires little capital, saying inflation has significantly increased operating costs.

She explained that beyond buying corn, traders must also pay for transportation, charcoal and packaging materials, making it more expensive to enter the business than many people assume.

Rukayat also noted that corn prices have remained unstable since she began the venture, making it difficult for traders to plan their expenses.

Daily sales support children’s education

Sharing her earnings, she said a ₦20,000 investment in corn often produces daily sales of between ₦25,000 and ₦27,000, with the profits helping to fund her children’s education.

“With God’s mercy, on a daily basis, if I borrowed money and got like ₦20,000 to buy corn, I used to earn about ₦25,000 to ₦27,000 daily. From the earnings, I contribute and that’s what I collect in supporting my children’s schooling,” she said.

However, she admitted that the business comes with risks because roasted corn must be sold fresh. Unsold corn quickly loses its taste, making it difficult to attract buyers the following day.

She recalled a period when soaring costs forced her to increase the price of roasted corn from ₦200 to ₦400, but the decision backfired as customers stayed away, leaving her with little or no profit.

Appeal for support

Rukayat said she has never benefited from any government grant or financial assistance.

She appealed to the government to introduce measures that would reduce the cost of goods and provide financial support for small-scale traders.

According to her, such interventions would help entrepreneurs sustain their businesses while meeting the needs of their families.

Joshua Zimerman Achieves Milestone by Visiting All 14 U.S. Presidential Museums, Including Chicago’s New Obama Center

0

CHICAGO (WLS) — Nearly a decade of dedication and curiosity about the nation’s history culminated in Chicago, as a determined traveler accomplished his mission to visit every presidential museum across America. This ambitious journey was part of an endeavor to explore historical narratives in anticipation of the country’s 250th anniversary.

Joshua Zimerman successfully concluded his nine-year and seven-month adventure by arriving at the Obama Presidential Center, the last of the 14 presidential museums he set out to see. As an enthusiast of the Presidential Museum Passport program, Zimerman collected stamps at each museum he visited. His completion was marked with the receipt of a commemorative pin, a fitting tribute to his effort.

During a small ceremony at the Obama Presidential Center, a representative acknowledged Zimerman’s achievement saying, “It is my honor to pin you with an Obama presidential center pin.”

This notable milestone came after an extensive expedition through numerous states.

Zimerman reflected on the distance covered in his journey, remarking, “I probably went over 10,000 miles doing this.”

Zimerman said the idea originated while he was working toward another personal goal.

“I’ve been working on going to all 50 states. I’m currently at 42 out of 50, and along the way I saw two air sites for the presidential museums, and I figured, why not?” he said.

According to Zimerman, fewer than 1% of people have completed the presidential museum passport challenge, which involves visiting every presidential museum and collecting stamps at each stop. Participants who complete the journey receive a special commemorative coin.

Zimerman said he was determined to finish the challenge two days before America’s 250th birthday, viewing the milestone as a chance to reflect on the nation’s history and future.

At the Obama Presidential Center, officials said the anniversary highlights the continued work of strengthening democracy and civic engagement.

“Every single generation has a responsibility and an obligation to continue to perfect this experiment that is the United States, 250 years of us trying and grinding through difficult questions about who we want to be as a country,” said John Roberson, executive vice president of the Obama Presidential Center.

Zimerman praised the center’s focus on civic education and public participation.

“A lot of the exhibits explain, like they have Democracy 101. They explain how you get in contact with your representatives, which the other museums don’t explain, and it’s really, they’re trying to make it more of an educational experience for non-scholarly people,” he said.

Roberson said the center aims to inspire visitors and serve as a symbol of hope.

“The message that it sends is that hope now has a home, and it’s right here on the South Side of Chicago,” he said.

Although he has completed his presidential museum tour, Zimerman said his travels are not over. He plans to continue working toward his goal of visiting all 50 states and encouraged others to explore museums and learn more about history.

“Support your country. Go out, explore these museums, not just the presidential ones, just explore history,” he said.

Four Injured in East LA Shooting After Tense Mexico-England World Cup Clash

0

In a closely contested World Cup match, England narrowly defeated Mexico with a score of 3-2. However, the excitement of the event was marred by an incident of gun violence nearby in east Los Angeles, where four individuals were shot amid a gathering of enthusiastic fans.

According to a spokesperson from the LA Sheriff’s Department, reports of three shootings surfaced around 9:40 p.m. on Sunday, including an incident on Whittier Boulevard. The police were promptly alerted.

Following the shootings, the injured parties were taken to the hospital. Details concerning the severity of their injuries are yet to be disclosed.

The LASD confirmed that, fortunately, no lives were lost during the incident. As of now, no suspect is in custody, and the motive behind the shootings remains a mystery.

Whittier Boulevard, a lively and popular gathering place for Mexican-Americans, is renowned for its festive atmosphere, especially during major soccer tournaments when it becomes a hub for celebration.

Earlier Sunday, Los Angeles Police Department chiefs issued a city-wide tactical alert, meaning those on-duty are not allowed to clock off until they are told so, KNBC reported.

This tool is designed to ensure police organizations have enough personnel working in the event of any disruption.

Forest Secret: Man’s Decade-Long Residence Revealed

0

Authorities in Arizona have arrested a man who has been living in a national forest for nearly a decade, according to reports.

Mark Aaron Gatz, 65, is potentially facing a prison sentence of up to five years. He allegedly established a permanent campsite in the Tonto National Forest, located northeast of Phoenix, where he resided for approximately eight years.

When officials apprehended Gatz on June 25, they discovered nearly half a ton of garbage scattered around his campsite, according to federal court documents examined by The Independent.

An officer involved in Gatz’s case expressed astonishment at the volume of litter in the area, as noted in several citations previously issued to Gatz before his detention.

The officer further remarked that Gatz’s living situation could be one of the most severe residential cases they had encountered.

The campsite where Gatz was arrested was located near a dirt trail popular for hiking, mountain biking and off-roading.

Before the arrest, the National Park Service had received multiple complaints of ‘several large structures, several man-made fire pits, several years’ worth of trash, household goods scattered throughout the forest of roughly an acre.’

‘Roughly half of [an] acre of resources [was] ruined’ due to the illegal structures and garbage laying on the ground for so long, according to a citation filed on June 29 in Arizona federal court.

‘The trash consisted of tires, plastic bags, trash bags, aluminum cans and other items of trash,’ the citation said.

Gatz had also reportedly built a canopy under which he parked an SUV. Other items at his campsite included a cooking station with around a dozen frying pans, five 55-gallon drums, eight tires, four bike frames, five gallons of motor oil and lumber.

National Forest police knew of Gatz for about a year, and he had at least six outstanding federal arrest warrants before he was taken into custody.

Those warrants were for building a campfire during fire restrictions, building on forest land, unsanitary conditions and occupying a national forest as a residence, according to the citation.

Gatz was detained as a potential flight risk and is accused of violating a total of nine federal laws.

Those laws include building and maintaining a fire outside a designated area, leaving a fire without extinguishing it, camping for longer than is allowed, constructing and occupying a residence on National Forest land, damaging a natural feature belonging to the US, and littering, among others.

According to a June 30 detention order, Gatz has a criminal history and failed to appear in court multiple times for violating residency and fire restrictions that he had received warnings and citations for.

Arrests for living on National Forest land are fairly unusual and typically only occur if the suspect has a history on non-compliance. Repercussions usually amount to large fines and a ban from the area rather than prison time.

Campers in National Forests are generally limited to a 14-day stay within 30 days. Staying beyond that period, building structures and leaving behind personal property is considered unauthorized residential use.

Rhapsody Of Realities 6 July 2026: There’s Something About You

Rhapsody Of Realities 6 July 2026 By Pastor Chris Oyakhilome (Christ Embassy): There’s Something About You

TOPIC: There’s Something About You (Rhapsody of Realities 6 July 2026)

But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you – Romans 8:11

Rhapsody Of Realities For Today’s MESSAGE:

Christianity is not a religion; it’s Christ in you (Colossians 1:27). It’s the outworking of the God-life in a human person. The Christian is one who has received and manifests the organic and existential attributes of divinity. That’s what makes you different. You didn’t come into religion when you received Christ. You came into reality.

The Bible says, “And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He that hath the Son hath life…” (1 John 5:11-12). This life is the transcendent life. Consider the human body. Even in its present, fallen state, it has the ability to reproduce cells, to repair and restore itself. That is human life, yet that life is corrupted due to the fall of Adam.

If that corrupted life can still function at that level, then think about the life of God in you that’s incorruptible, indestructible and divine! The Bible says, “…being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever” (1 Peter 1:23).

This is what you have now, a life that carries within it the ability to produce and effect changes. The Lord Jesus said, “But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you…” (Acts 1:8). That power is the dynamic ability to cause changes. It’s at work in you even now; it’s in your system.

It helps you understand when the Scripture says if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He will vitalize your mortal body (Romans 8:11). He gives life to your physical body. 2 Corinthians 4:7-11 tells us something remarkable; it says, “But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us. We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; Persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed….”

You’re indestructible. You’re a victor forever. You can never be disadvantaged. You have the ability to produce and reproduce success. You carry that power, the genes of excellence within you. It’s for the same reason that the Bible says whatsoever you do, shall prosper (Psalm 1:3).

You must realise and walk in the consciousness of this reality. There’s something about you: something divine and powerful; something that sets you apart from the ordinary. The Bible says, “…greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world” (1 John 4:4). Let this be the mindset that defines your life every day.

PRAYER

Dear Father, I thank you for your life in me, and I’m conscious of its power and work in my spirit, and the ministry of the Holy Ghost in my entire being. The divine life vitalizes my body and produces changes in every area of my life. I walk in dominion, strength and victory, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

2 Corinthians 4:7-11 (NIV)
But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us. [8] We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; [9] persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. [10] We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body. [11] For we who are alive are always being given over to death for Jesus’ sake, so that his life may also be revealed in our mortal body.

1 John 5:11-12 (NIV)
And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. [12] Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.

1 Corinthians 6:19 (NIV)
Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own;

Newcastle United Transfer Strategy Unveiled: Key Targets, Positions of Interest, and Future Plans for Bruno Guimaraes and Eddie Howe

A mix of patience, optimism, and a touch of anxiety encapsulates the emotional spectrum for Newcastle United during this transfer window period.

From day to day, or even moment to moment, this emotional pendulum swings vigorously, much like the club’s transfer team who are keen to steer clear of a repeat performance of last summer’s challenges.

Reflecting on the past, the goal is to ensure a timely departure for players wishing to leave, rather than last-minute exits. Additionally, there’s a need for a swifter response in acquiring new talent, all while maintaining control over proceedings.

This setback was due to structural issues rather than the individuals involved. Coach Eddie Howe found himself let down by a club he had consistently supported. The aftermath was a disastrous season, especially when compared to their former successes.

This time around, the leadership roles seem to be correctly filled with figures like sporting director Ross Wilson and chief executive David Hopkinson at the helm, but achieving the desired results remains uncertain.

Victor Munoz was on the brink of joining Newcastle before Liverpool gazumped them

Victor Munoz was on the brink of joining Newcastle before Liverpool gazumped them

Howe is ‘all in’, say sources, after a post-season period of reflection. He has returned with optimism. Spirit, though, can soon be tested at a club whose stated ambition, to be No 1 in the world, does not tally with the reality of their situation. It is why some of their top stars want to leave – more on that shortly.

It was a blow for the recruitment team when their first big pursuit of the window, for Osasuna and Spain winger Victor Munoz, ended in Liverpool hijacking the deal. For those who were inside St James’ Park 12 months ago, when the Reds gazumped their move for Hugo Ekitike, it had a haunting feel. Here we go again. Panic.

There was better news this week when Bazoumana Traore, a 20-year-old winger from Hoffenheim, arrived on Tyneside for a medical ahead of a £42.5m transfer. The Ivory Coast international fits the profile Wilson is working to, which is 18-to-24-year-olds with a high ceiling for improvement. Positivity.

A deal for Switzerland midfielder Johan Manzambi is being discussed but progress has not been as swift as hoped. He is currently with his country at the World Cup. Patience. Manchester United are said to have a longstanding interest in the 20-year-old and Manzambi’s eye-catching performances in North America would not have helped. Panic? Not yet.

Newcastle have been told they are at the front of the queue and the numbers involved with the player and his club Freiburg should not be an issue, but they thought that about Munoz. Man United’s midfield priority is also Alex Scott of Bournemouth.

Newcastle will push ahead and hope remains that Manzambi will arrive. There is, though, a danger that others could join the race. Newcastle have a reputation among rivals for identifying good players, and that is one of the reasons they are vulnerable to those clubs copying their homework.

Matias Fernandez-Pardo, of Lille and Belgium, is a versatile forward they like a lot, but the 21-year-old is said to want Champions League.

Elsewhere, club chiefs have maintained a dialogue around Manchester City goalkeeper James Trafford, but have been told he will only decide on his future after the World Cup. He remains the top target to play ahead of Ewen Jaouen, the 20-year-old keeper who has joined from Reims for £18m.

A deal for Switzerland midfielder Johan Manzambi is being discussed

A right back is also wanted and they have shortlists in every position, but those moves will be dependent on outgoings. Already gone is Anthony Gordon to Barcelona, while Sandro Tonali is in the departure lounge headed for Tottenham.

At £70m and £92.5m respectively before add-ons, both deals represent fair value for Newcastle. They needed to trade this summer, evidenced by £5.2m’s worth of UEFA fines for breaching financial rules.

Gordon wanted to go to accelerate his career, while Tonali was driven as much by lifestyle and a desire to relocate his family to London. But both had concerns about the speed, direction and delivery of the Newcastle project.

That, it should be said, is related to infrastructure and ownership – still no new training ground, for example – and not coaching. Howe and his backroom team have improved every player, and Gordon and Tonali would acknowledge that as being integral to their development. Combined, the profit on the pair could rise to £80m.

One profit that would feel like a loss at any price is Bruno Guimaraes. As revealed by Daily Mail Sport, representatives acting on behalf of the club captain have spoken to Arsenal and, in turn, have spoken to Newcastle with what is said to be a verbal offer. That was instantly dismissed and the message back was that Guimaraes is not for sale.

Bruno Guimaraes' representatives have spoken to Arsenal but a verbal offer was dismissed

Bruno Guimaraes’ representatives have spoken to Arsenal but a verbal offer was dismissed

It is a concern for Howe and Wilson, though, that such conversations have taken place. Why? It would suggest their most influential player is keen to explore his options. Newcastle, we can reveal, will talk about a new contract with the Brazilian, if that is what he wants. So far, with him at the World Cup, the full picture remains unclear.

As a contingency, midfielders remain on the radar. Felix Nmecha, of Dortmund and Germany, is admired and conversations have taken place, but that is a pricey deal to do.

Lamine Camara, of Monaco, has been linked but that is unlikely to happen. The preference and the plan is to keep Guimaraes. Howe believes his skipper has a quality that is priceless.

But everyone else, well they have a price, that is the upshot of PSR, SCR and FFP. That is why Newcastle’s transfer situation remains fluid. Patience. Positivity. Panic. Only 60 days to go.

Helen George of ‘Call the Midwife’ Announces Heartbreaking Split Amid ‘Disrespect’ Revelation

Helen George, known for her role in “Call The Midwife,” has parted ways with her boyfriend, Dann Innes, merely seven months after they decided to cohabit. Helen, now 42, had been romantically involved with Dann, a property marketing agency executive, since March 2025. Earlier this year, Dann joined Helen in her West London home, where she lives with her daughters, Wren Ivy and Lark.

However, it appears that the couple’s journey has come to an end. Reports suggest that Dann was spotted moving out of Helen’s residence earlier this week. A source confirmed to The Sun that the couple “have gone their separate ways,” noting, “They had a whirlwind romance, but their differences became apparent. It has been a difficult time for them both.”

In the wake of the breakup, Helen has taken to social media, offering glimpses into her personal turmoil. Her posts include a quote on her Instagram Story alluding to “responding to disrespect,” hinting at the emotional upheaval she is experiencing.

Among her posts is a poignant image of her daughter walking alone through a field, shared with her 277,000 followers. She captioned it with the words, “When the chaos leaves, the calm resumes.” Another notable post features an online quote, stating, “I will absolutely take responsibility for when I am wrong. But I will never apologize for responding to disrespect.”

The quote continues, “If you lit the match, do not stand in the flames pretending to be the victim.”

Helen and Dan reportedly grew close after splitting from their respective long-term partners, and their romance started after meeting on the dating app Raya. In the past months, they were seen posting loved-up social media posts on Valentine’s Day and on holiday together in Cornwall.

Dan has two children of his own, aged 14 and 12, from a previous marriage, which is believed to have lasted from 2008 to 2016. At the time, Helen had broken up with her partner, Jack Aston, with whom she shares two daughters.

Helen spoke to BBC Radio 4 about juggling motherhood with her stage career. She admitted: “I would like to also shout out to the father of my daughters, Jack. We split the children 50/50; he is an incredible and reliable father who also juggles as much as I. It is a juggle, and I make mistakes. I have to forgive myself for that because I am a good mother.”

She takes her daughters to the dressing room after school so they “grow up understanding how important it is for women to be financially independent”.

Jordan Henderson Injured in Unlikely Twist During England’s World Cup Celebration

0

The joyous atmosphere surrounding England’s thrilling victory over Mexico in the Round of 16 took an unexpected turn when midfielder Jordan Henderson suffered an unusual wrist injury during the post-match celebrations with fans in Mexico on Sunday night.

As England players reveled with their supporters to the iconic tune of Oasis’s “Wonderwall” echoing through the Estadio Azteca, Henderson attempted to leap over a barrier, only to land awkwardly on the pitch.

One of Henderson’s teammates quickly noticed the mishap and gestured urgently for medical assistance.

Thomas Tuchel, England’s manager, later confirmed that Henderson had indeed sustained a wrist injury during the peculiar celebration incident.

“He’s currently in the hospital, which suggests the injury is fairly serious,” Tuchel remarked. “It doesn’t feel right that Jordan isn’t here with us now after such a memorable evening. I’m not sure about the details of what happens next,” he added.

Tuchel added that he had been fulfilling his media obligations when the team’s doctors had informed him that Henderson had been transported to a local hospital.

The England manager described his emotions as “very mixed” over his pride in his team’s performance coupled with being “sad” over the Henderson injury.

The incident had been noted on the Fox broadcast when Harry Kane, who scored England’s third goal of the night, spoke with the American broadcaster.

Kane said Henderson had “just fell over there,” but seemed more optimistic about his condition before Tuchel held his postmatch press conference.

It’s unclear how long Henderson may be sidelined, especially with the way that Tuchel described the injury.

England Secures Historic World Cup Triumph, Marking Greatest Win Since 1966: Analysis by Oliver Holt

0

Within the iconic football arena of the Azteca, amidst the electrifying and untamed passion that the sport evokes, England stood resilient. Despite the deafening noise, the tempestuous weather engulfing the stadium, and the high altitude of 7,220 feet that makes hearts race and lungs labor for air, they persevered even when reduced to ten players for a grueling 40 minutes.

When the referee’s final whistle pierced the atmosphere, the nation collectively exhaled. England, awake and alive in pubs dotted across the cities and villages in the small hours, from living rooms to dens, and including the brave souls in the stadium’s lofty stands, all let out a sigh of relief.

Joyous celebrations ensued among the England squad. Their 3-2 triumph was a monumental achievement—an instant classic etched in history, marking a significant moment in this renowned venue. Undoubtedly, this was England’s finest World Cup victory since the legendary 1966 win.

Harry Kane, the team captain, with a crucial goal, and Jude Bellingham, who scored twice, once more proved their worth as towering figures for England in this tournament.

Typically, a red card signifies impending defeat for England in World Cups, yet when Jarell Quansah was expelled early in the second half, the team stood firm and refused to back down.

For most who witnessed this, it was the greatest England performance they would have ever seen in the greatest stadium they have ever visited. They will play Norway in the quarter-finals in Miami on Saturday evening. It is tempting to say that if England can win here at the Azteca in these circumstances, they can win anywhere.

Thomas Tuchel, Kane, Bellingham and the rest of the squad had arrived here late on Friday night knowing that this country had been a graveyard of England’s ambitions at two World Cups already and that the only precedents for visits here involved controversy and failure.

It was here that their defence of the World Cup they won in 1966 ended when they surrendered a two-goal lead and fell to defeat to West Germany in Leon in 1970. It was here, in the Azteca, where they fell to the genius and the duplicity of Diego Maradona and his Hand of God goal in 1986.

And it was here where many expected them to succumb once more. Mexico had only lost twice here in 89 competitive fixtures since the stadium opened 60 years ago. The arena has become legend, an outlier of passion and fury and tradition at a tournament where many matches are being played in manicured monuments to wealth and sophistication.

There was altitude, there was heat, there was kick-off time chaos, there was an hour’s delay, there were fans letting off a fusillade of fireworks outside their team hotel in the middle of the night and there was an opponent that had not conceded a single goal in the three matches it had already played here and had never lost a World Cup game here. England defeated it all.

And so in the magnificent cathedral of the game, which has been blessed by staging Brazil’s beautiful demolition of Italy in the 1970 World Cup final and Maradona’s greatest triumph when Argentina defeated West Germany in the 1986 final, England exorcised the ghosts of what happened here 40 years ago and created their own special moment in the Azteca.

The hour’s delay to the start because of thunderstorms had worked the crowd into an even greater frenzy than usual. ‘Si, si, si,’ they yelled over and over again in the seconds before kick-off. The expectation was that Mexico would hurl themselves at England in the first 20 minutes.

Tuchel had chosen Bukayo Saka and Anthony Gorden to start wide but all thoughts of team selection were lost in the mayhem of the opening 50 seconds when Declan Rice was shown a yellow card when he tried to clear the ball but connected with the face of Luis Romo instead. It was a bad start.

The crowd was at fever pitch and their team fed off it. They passed the ball around beautifully in the early moments. ‘Ole’, the crowd chanted with every pass, as if they were taunting a maddened bull. Kane lost his cool when he tried to retrieve the ball after a Mexico foul. The madness of the Azteca was getting to everyone.

England were clinging on until 10 minutes before half-time. Then a different kind of bedlam was unleashed and Bellingham unleashed it with two goals in 98 seconds. First, Rice rampaged down the right and played the ball to Saka.

Saka beat his man and crossed to the back post where Bellingham met it with a diving header a few yards out.

The stadium was stunned but worse was to come for Mexico.

Straight from the kick-off, England ran at Mexico again. Gordon, who had had an excellent half, played the ball to Kane and Kane pulled it back into the box where Bellingham made absolutely sure he got to it first and forced it over the line.

England were in heaven. It felt briefly as if the game was won. It wasn’t. Two minutes before half-time, England failed to clear a Mexico free kick and Julian Quinones reacted fastest to the loose ball. He rifled it high into the roof of the England net. The Azteca was alive again, even louder and more impassioned than before.

England were besieged now. Jimenez dragged a good chance wide, then forced a fine save out of Pickford with a looping header.

Then Cesar Montes found the ball at his feet from a Mexico corner and seemed certain to score until Bellingham denied him with a brilliant saving tackle.

Half-time seemed to have come at the right time for England. Nico O’Reilly hit the post from the edge of the area and England seemed to be in the ascendancy again. This game was far too tumultuous for something so simple.

Eight minutes after the break, Jarell Quansah launched himself into a sliding tackle on Jesus Gallardo. He got the ball but also caught Gallardo high on the shin. Gallardo was left in a heap but referee Alireza Faghani waved play on.

The Mexico bench was enraged. There was a scuffle between the substitutes and then the referee was called to review the decision. He showed Quansah a red card.

There was still no time to breathe. Five minutes later, Gordon took the ball around Raul Rangel and Rangel brought him down. It was an obvious penalty. Kane took it and hammered it into the corner of the net. It was his sixth goal of this World Cup.

Then, another twist, with 20 minutes left. Kane tried to clear a loose ball in the penalty area but Erick Gutierrez got there just ahead of him and Kane kicked the back of his leg instead of the ball. The referee, once more, went to the monitor, and awarded a penalty. Jimenez took it and even though Pickford tried to change direction, the ball sped past him.

The crowd smelled blood. They bayed for the equaliser. England clung on. John Stones, Dan Burn and Djed Spence came on. They all played like heroes at the back. Then the fourth official held up a board showing there would be 11 minutes of time added on.

Some doubted England could hold out. But this game was about 15 heroes. Fifteen men who stood up when many expected them to fail. Fifteen men who would not yield to everything the Azteca threw at them. Fifteen men who will travel to Miami this week to play for a place in the World Cup semi-finals.

England Triumphs Over Mexico 3-2 at Estadio Azteca to Secure World Cup Quarterfinal Spot

MEXICO CITY (AP) — In a dramatic World Cup showdown at Estadio Azteca, Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane propelled England into the quarterfinals, triumphing over host nation Mexico with a 3-2 victory. Despite a fervent crowd, high altitude, and being a man down for much of the second half, England emerged victorious on a thrilling Sunday night.

In a stadium where a controversial goal ended England’s dreams against Argentina in 1986, it was Kane’s decisive strike that delivered a much-needed moment of redemption for the nation, four decades later.

“I am just proud of the mentality and the attitude … round of 16 is a moment in tournaments when you find a way to win and we did it with pure mentality and heart,” England coach Thomas Tuchel remarked. “We overcame every obstacle that was thrown our way.”

Bellingham electrified the first half with two goals scored in a rapid succession of just 98 seconds. After Jarell Quansah’s dismissal left England with ten men, Kane’s penalty six minutes later reaffirmed England’s two-goal advantage.

With this victory, England advances to face Norway in the semifinals on Saturday at Miami Gardens, Florida.

“It was a crazy game. We had to fight,” Kane said, his voice hoarse. “I can’t really talk, but the occasion, the team, everything against us, we found a way.”

Bellingham stunned the crowd of 80,824 at a venue where Mexico was unbeaten in 10 World Cup matches, including three this tournament, when he scored on a header in the 36th minute and again in the 38th on a pass from Kane.

“We’ve done something incredible tonight, no doubt about it, and we’ll enjoy it. And we’ll sing songs until we lose our voices on the plane and whatnot, but we’ll have a couple of days recovering, then it’s straight back to business in terms of facing Norway,” Bellingham said.

Julián Quiñones scored for El Tri in the 42nd minute, and the game appeared to turn in Mexico’s favor when Quansah was shown a red card in the 54th for a dangerous foul on Jesús Gallardo.

But England was awarded a penalty for a challenge by Mexico goalkeeper Raúl Rangel, and Kane converted for his sixth goal of this tournament and 14th of his World Cup career, matching Gerd Müller of West Germany for fifth on the scoring list. Kane sits one behind Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappé and Erling Haaland in the Golden Boot race.

Kane then committed a foul that made him the first player since at least 1966 to score and concede a penalty in a World Cup game. Raúl Jiménez converted the kick with a stutter-step approach to move El Tri within 3-2.

“Forty, 50 minutes with 10 men — even on sea level it’s almost impossible to overcome but we did it. We did it in altitude,” Tuchel said. “They’re almost too exhausted to celebrate. It’s just beautiful that players on that kind of level just give everything for the win and for the country and for that shirt.”

Mexico attacked relentlessly over the final 21 minutes, plus 11 minutes of stoppage time, but goalkeeper Jordan Pickford and England’s defenders held steady.

“This is probably one of the biggest England wins in a while, probably the biggest one I can remember as a fan or player,” Bellingham said. “The best night of my England career.”

Midfielder Jordan Henderson was taken to a hospital after the match with a wrist injury, Tuchel said. He was hurt when he tumbled over an advertising board during the postgame celebration.

“I have mixed feelings; I am sad because Jordan injured his wrist and it is quite serious. It just does not fit with the evening that Jordan is not with us,” Tuchel added. “I do not know the procedure; the doctor told me that he is in the hospital.”

Mexico has not reached the World Cup quarterfinals since hosting in 1986. Since then, it has lost in the round of 16 eight times, failed to advance past the group stage in 2022 and was disqualified from the 1990 tournament.

“Dreaming and falling like this hurts a lot, but the players should leave with their heads held high,” Mexico coach Javier Aguirre said. “They left everything on the pitch, but today it just wasn’t meant to be. The fans had high hopes, and we couldn’t get the job done and give them another night of joy.”

It was Mexico’s third competitive loss at Azteca, which opened in 1966, after a pair of 2-1 defeats in World Cup qualifiers, to Costa Rica in 2001 and to Honduras in 2013.

The stadium sits 7,300 feet (2,200 meters) above sea level and England’s travel schedule gave it no opportunity to get used to the altitude. Mexico’s passionate fans blasted horns outside the England hotel to disrupt players’ sleep, and the start of the match was delayed an hour because of a thunderstorm.

No matter. England is on to the quarterfinals as it seeks its first title since 1966, and its outnumbered fans continued to serenade the victorious Three Lions with Oasis’ “Wonderwall.”
