Celebrities Criticize Trump Administration in Somber Video for America 250 Event

0

In a spirited commemoration of America’s 250th anniversary, a coalition of well-known Hollywood figures and activists have launched a compelling video campaign. The message, aimed squarely at opposing President Donald Trump’s administration, underscores the urgency the group feels about the current political climate.

This star-studded video premiered on Variety and features an impressive lineup of celebrities. Among the prominent names are Mark Ruffalo, Sarah Jessica Parker, Ted Danson, and Judd Apatow. The nearly 10-minute video showcases these personalities as they articulate key principles from “On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century,” a thought-provoking book by historian Timothy Snyder.

Early in the video, Snyder himself sets the tone by cautioning viewers about the significance of the impending midterm elections. He describes them as a pivotal “turning point” for the nation, stressing that voters’ choices will either guide the country in a positive direction or exacerbate existing challenges.

Snyder reflects on the Republic’s 250-year journey, interweaving his personal connection, as his book “On Tyranny” has coincided with the Republic’s narrative for the past decade, having been penned in November 2016. The sentiment of both reflection and urgency infuses his message.

Looking toward November, Snyder expresses a sense of foreboding and hope. He sees this moment as a critical juncture where the trajectory of the Republic hangs in the balance, capable of veering toward either promising advancements or significant setbacks.

Reading from the book and its suggestions on how a nation turns to tyranny, celebrities recited lines including “Do not obey in advance,” delivered by Leslie Odom Jr., Sheryl Lee Ralph and Holland Taylor. Another, “Beware of the one-party state,” was read by Isabel Allende and Lisa Rinna.

Actor Mark Ruffalo, known for appearing in Marvel’s “Avengers” films, explained his reason for participating in the video when speaking with Variety. Ruffalo has long been an outspoken critic of the Trump administration.

“My hope is that after this very bad and corrupt time we are living through now, we move away from a government that caters to the wealthy and powerful and focuses on the needs, desires and dreams of the children and young people,” Ruffalo told Variety, later adding, “Keep America moving toward its great promise and not the measly mistakes and cruelty of its past.”

Ruffalo also called for closing the wealth gap, cherishing the planet and leaving behind the “colonial mindset of land theft, extractive economies, domination and materialism; embrace the Indigenous wisdom and worldview of circular economies, respect for all things and beings as our relatives and, therefore, worthy of our care and thoughtfulness.”

Snyder also posted his Substack video to X with the caption: “To celebrate a rebellion is to know that, from a flawed world, we can make new things. We can hold on, we can find each other, and not just imagine but create a much better America. It is a special 250th – it is ours.”

Under the description of his video, Snyder directly took aim at the current 250th anniversary celebrations, writing that the leaders behind them represent a “threat to liberty.”

“Sadly, those who lead our official celebration today represent every threat to liberty that the founders named: arbitrary rule; indifference to law; undue accumulation of wealth; corruption of the government to attain that wealth; collusion with foreign powers to attain power,” he wrote.

He also listed the participants, including Isabel Allende, Judd Apatow, Margaret Atwood, Joan Baez, Sophia Bush, Misha Collins, Kimberlé Crenshaw, Ted Danson, Ron Funches, Tony Goldwyn, Eric Holder, Jenifer Lewis, Leslie Odom Jr., Sarah Jessica Parker, Billy Porter, Maria Ressa, Lisa Rinna, Molly Ringwald, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Mark Ruffalo, J. Smith-Cameron, Holland Taylor, Viet Thanh Nguyen and Bradley Whitford.

How the Socceroos Are Poised to Surpass Expectations in the Next World Cup Campaign

0

While their journey may have concluded, the Socceroos have once again won over the hearts of Australians nationwide.

Despite the biting cold, thousands gathered at live sites and filled pubs across Australia, eager to watch the early-morning World Cup Round of 32 match against Egypt.

Millions more tuned in from home, sharing in the collective disappointment of the players after their elimination in a tense penalty shootout.

This concluded a remarkable campaign for the Socceroos, who achieved a second-place finish in their group and advanced to the World Cup knockout stages for only the third time. It marked their debut in a World Cup penalty shootout.

Although the outcome was harsh, the Socceroos and Australian football have much to look forward to with renewed optimism.

The 26-man squad had an average age of 26.8 — the second-youngest Australia has taken to a World Cup.

Some of the team’s standout performers were also among its youngest, including Nestory Irankunda, 20, Jordy Bos, 23, Patrick Beach, 22, Paul Okon-Engstler, 21, Cristian Volpato, 22, Alessandro Circati, 22, and Lucas Herrington, 18.

Those players are expected to attract growing interest from top European clubs in the years ahead — Barcelona lodged a bid for Herrington on the eve of the tournament — and they will only continue to improve with age and experience.

By the time the 2030 World Cup rolls around, many will be entering their physical and tactical prime. They will play key roles for the national team, with several World Cups potentially still ahead of them.

The diversity of the 26-man squad — comprising at least 15 cultural and ethnic backgrounds — also became a focal point of the team’s World Cup campaign, with the players releasing a video celebrating their migrant roots on the eve of the tournament.

Migrant advocates said the team’s diversity offered an important counterpoint to anti-migrant sentiment and political attacks on multiculturalism.

Speaking after the loss, veteran Socceroo Aziz Behich said the side had “set the bar” for the future.

“Two World Cups in a row; we’ve reached the knockout stages.”

“No one else has set the bar for us. That’s us as a squad and as players and staff.

“We’ve done that from the way we’ve worked and the way we’ve played to get ourselves in this position.

“So I think that’s got to be the standard from now on, getting out of the group and hopefully next World Cup we’ll be knocking on the door and getting out the knockout stages.”

Former Socceroo Tommy Oar was equally optimistic about the future.

“I think we have the most exciting young squad that we’ve had in a number of years, since I can remember,” he told SBS News.

“Maybe the Golden Generation players [from the 2006 World Cup] playing at very good clubs across the world, but also at the very start of their careers.”

Despite the heartbreaking exit, coach Tony Popovic said his players had given everything throughout the tournament.

“I’ve always maintained it’s a wonderful group. They showed how good they are tonight,” he said.

“At this moment right now, everything’s a little bit tough to take, but I’m sure every Australian is proud of the group and what they did throughout the tournament and tonight.”

The Socceroos will next turn their attention to next year’s Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia.

Legendary Comeback: Lionel Richie Thrills Fans With Return to Stage Post Health Scare

0

Lionel Richie has made a spirited return to the concert scene, diving back into his tour after experiencing a medical emergency onstage that led to the cancellation of two performances the previous week.

During his show last week at the Grand Casino in St Paul, Minnesota, the 77-year-old artist had to remain seated while performing. He informed the audience that he felt ‘dizzy’ and ended the concert early due to health concerns.

Following this event, the legendary singer, known for hits like “All Night Long,” announced that he would postpone his forthcoming weekend concerts in Chicago, Illinois, and Columbus, Ohio.

Nevertheless, Richie made a victorious comeback on Tuesday, performing in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and then moving on to deliver another vibrant show in Detroit, Michigan.

On Saturday, July 4th, Richie took to Instagram, sharing photos from the concerts and reassuring his fans that he was ‘doing well’ and back in action.

Richie, who is in the midst of his Sing a Song All Night Long tour with Earth, Wind & Fire, has yet to confirm the exact nature of the health problems he had last week.

The Daily Mail has reached out to Richie’s representative for comment.

'Thank you for every message, every kind word, and for all your love,' wrote Richie in a new Instagram post: 'I¿m doing well, and I¿m grateful for all of you'

‘Thank you for every message, every kind word, and for all your love. I’m doing well, and I’m grateful for all of you,’ wrote Richie in the caption.

In the caption of his new Instagram post, he added: ‘Pittsburgh and Detroit were an absolute joy. The energy, the dancing, the faces in the crowd… we made real memories together. See you in Toronto… let’s party all night long!’

Shortly after the medical emergency, a source had told the Daily Mail that his loved ones fear Richie – whose best-selling album is 1983’s Can’t Slow Down – may be more focused on entertaining audiences than focusing on his own health.

‘Family, friends, and even his bandmates are definitely concerned about Lionel’s health, but nobody is about to tell him to slow down,’ the insider said. ‘They all want him better and to do what he loves to do.’

They emphasized his incredible work ethic, which has made him a reliably popular entertainer for decades, going back to his time in the 1970s and ’80s in The Commodores.

‘The Lionel we see on tour and on American Idol is the same Lionel we have known for decades – he’s always moving, always working, and always looking ahead to the next show,’ the source continued. ‘And with that, depending on what doctors tell him, his mindset is already focused on getting back out on the road as quickly as possible because that’s simply who he is.’

‘Music isn’t just his job; it’s what keeps him going. He’s not someone who sits still, and retirement has never really been part of the conversation unless his health leaves him with no other choice,’ they added.

‘Right now, Lionel is actually more upset that fans didn’t get the full show they paid for than he is about himself and his health. That’s where his head is,’ the insider said. ‘He hates disappointing people and feels terrible that the concert couldn’t continue as planned.’

While neither the singer or his team have addressed his health, the United Center in Chicago issued a statement on his behalf revealing Richie has postponed his next two shows on the Sing A Song All Night Long tour with Earth, Wind & Fire

The source close to Richie suggested he wasn’t going to worry for the time being.

‘As far as he’s concerned, while he awaits results, this is just a temporary setback. He fully expects to be back doing what he loves, and he’s already hoping to make it to Chicago this weekend if everything checks out,’ they shared.

‘He’s still waiting for a few more answers on what he is dealing with, but he feels that it could be just a bit of an episode over something super serious.’

Sources close to the star told TMZ that paramedics met the hitmaker backstage, and he was taken by ambulance to a hospital.

It was noted that the move was a precautionary measure.

The drama first unfolded during the start of Richie’s joint Sing A Song All Night Long tour with Earth, Wind & Fire.

He announced an unusual intermission after a performance of Three Times A Lady from his piano, according to Minnesota’s Bring Me The News.

Richie’s band reportedly also left the stage minutes later but, more than 40 minutes after he cut off the show, a band member returned to announce he wouldn’t be able to return because he was feeling ill.

‘Unfortunately, Lionel is not feeling well,’ said saxophonist Dino Soldo, according to the Minnesota Star Tribune. ‘He won’t be able to continue. Additional information will be available.’

On social media, fans who attended the show shared their concerns and revealed that the singer had signaled throughout the performance that he wasn’t feeling well.

Videos of him performing showed the singer stopping to sit down multiple times during his second-to-last song Dancing On The Ceiling and he reportedly told the crowd he was feeling ‘dizzy’ while performing.

Richie was able to sit at the piano bench for what turned out to be his last song of the evening.

A fan who attended the concert told the publication Richie ‘said he has been in this business long enough, if you feel dizzy you sit down! And if you don’t feel right, you sit down!’

According to the Minnesota Star Tribune’s Jon Bream, Richie was even saltier with his advice, quoting the singer as saying, ‘When you’re feeling dizzy, sit your a** down.’

One video posted by journalist Patrick Kessler on X on Wednesday night showed a portion of his Dancing On The Ceiling performance in which he appeared unsteady as he walked across the stage, before he made an unexpected stop and sat down on the edge of a large stepped platform.

Despite apparently feeling unwell, Richie appeared to be singing throughout his seated portion of the song, rather than relying on a guide vocal.

Richie was seated for less than ten seconds before he stood up and started making his way across the stage again.

However, less than 30 seconds later, he stopped to sit down again on the risers on the opposite side of the stage, even as he continued singing.

According to the Star Tribune, Richie’s saxophonist Dino Soldo, who later confirmed that the rest of the show was canceled, took a seat with the singer during Dancing On The Ceiling.

The publication reported audience members began to file out of the venue as soon as Richie’s band left the stage, about 15 minutes after he announced the surprise intermission.

Open Heaven 5 July 2026 TOPIC – What Is Your Deepest Desire?

MEMORISE: My soul waiteth for the Lord more than they that watch for the morning: I say, more than they that watch for the morning. – Psalm 130:6 (KJV)

READ: John 12:20-21 (KJV)

20 And there were certain Greeks among them that came up to worship at the feast:

21 The same came therefore to Philip, which was of Bethsaida of Galilee, and desired him, saying, Sir, we would see Jesus.

BIBLE IN ONE YEAR: Proverbs 18-20

Open Heaven 5 July 2026 MESSAGE

One thing have I desired of the Lord, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord, and to enquire in his temple. – Psalm 27:4

In the Scripture above and many other instances in the Bible, David expressed his desire to dwell in God’s presence. In Psalm 63:1-2, he expressed his yearning to seek God early and see His power and glory. In verse 6 of the same chapter, he said that he remembered God upon his bed and meditated on Him in the night watches. Also, in today’s memory verse, he said that his soul waited for the Lord more than those who watch for the morning. Watchmen always look forward to daybreak when they would be free to rest and relax, and David likened his intense desire for God to their longing for daybreak.

Beloved, what or whom are you seeking? In today’s Bible reading, certain Greeks went to worship at the feast in Jerusalem, and when they saw Philip, they said, “Sir, we would see Jesus.” If God gives you a blank cheque today, what will you ask for? Will you ask for things that will perish with time, or will you ask to see Jesus? People who seek God only for material things will never truly be satisfied because they will ultimately fade away. However, those who genuinely seek God and His Kingdom always find Him (Jeremiah 29:13) and become truly satisfied, as every other thing they need is added to them (Matthew 6:33).

God will always draw near to those who draw near to Him (James 4:8); He showed this clearly in His relationship with David. Do you want God to love you in a special way? Do you want His presence with you at all times? Then your deepest desire should be to always please him (1 Thessalonians 4:1) and to continually grow in your knowledge of Him (Philippians 3:10).

Child of God, what is your deepest heart cry? What keeps you awake at night? Do you regularly think of how to amass material things for yourself or how to know God more? Whatever you are hungry and thirsty for will determine what you will get, and as Matthew 5:6 says, “Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled!” I pray that you will truly seek God’s face and experience the beauty of His holiness, in Jesus’ name.

California Hit-and-Run Involving Paul Pelosi Causes Significant Vehicle Damage

0

LOS ANGELES (AP) — In a recent incident in California, Paul Pelosi, the spouse of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, found himself entangled in a hit-and-run episode, resulting in significant damage to a parked vehicle. Authorities reported on Saturday that he may face misdemeanor charges.

Pelosi was maneuvering his brown convertible through Yountville—an area renowned for its wine country—when the accident occurred. He hit a legally parked car along the roadway, halted momentarily, and then drove off, according to a statement from the Napa County Sheriff’s Office. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported in the incident.

A bystander who witnessed the collision promptly contacted 911. Sheriff’s deputies, arriving shortly thereafter, located Pelosi about a quarter of a mile from the scene with visible damage to the front of his vehicle. When approached by the officers, Pelosi reportedly admitted to realizing he had collided with an object but couldn’t recall when it happened or the cause of the damage.

Despite initial concerns, the authorities confirmed that alcohol was not a factor, as Pelosi, 86, had no traces of it in his system. Given his age, the sheriff’s office has referred him to the Department of Motor Vehicles, initiating a standard procedure to assess his capability to continue driving, something routinely done with elder drivers.

Although Paul Pelosi was not arrested, the sheriff’s office recommended misdemeanor charges for leaving the scene of an accident, since the collision resulted in no physical harm. This means he may have to respond to legal proceedings stemming from the incident.

A staffer for Nancy Pelosi did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment.

Paul Pelosi pleaded guilty in 2022 to misdemeanor charges of driving under the influence in Napa County and was sentenced to five days in jail and three years of probation. However, he served only two days in jail and received good conduct credit for two other days, leaving just one day to serve in a work program at the courthouse.

As part of his probation, Pelosi was required to attend a three-month drinking driver class and install an ignition interlock device, which forces drivers to provide a breath sample to prove sobriety before the engine will start. He also was ordered to pay about $5,000 in victim restitution for medical bills and lost wages, along with nearly $2,000 in fines.

That same year he was attacked and severely beaten with a hammer at the couple’s San Francisco home.

DCLM Daily Manna 5 July 2026 — Eyewitness’ Declaration

DCLM Daily Manna 5 July 2026 Devotional by Pastor W. F. Kumuyi — Eyewitness’ Declaration

TOPIC: Eyewitness’ Declaration (DCLM Daily Manna 5 July 2026)

KEY VERSE: That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life – 1 John 1:1

TEXT: 1 John 1:1-4 (KJV)

1 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life;

2 (For the life was manifested, and we have seen it, and bear witness, and shew unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us;)

3 That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ.

4 And these things write we unto you, that your joy may be full.

DCLM Daily Manna For Today MESSAGE:

The accounts of eyewitnesses are usually reliable and often more factual than handed down tales or even recycled stories that carry exaggerated details.

The writer of this epistle, John the beloved, squares up and writes authoritatively in a manner akin to incorruptible judges who dispassionately weigh all the evidences of the two sides (plaintiff and defendant) and come up with incontestable verdicts that render all falsehood crashing and cascading like a pack of cards. Such verdicts are informed by the knowledge or intimacy with the facts surrounding the contestation. Based on first-hand and intimate relationship with Christ, John encapsulates his knowledge in four crisp verses. Here, he portrays a picturesque attestation of first, the dateless existence of Christ; second, the treasure of Christ’s presence; third, the eternal and abundant life in Christ with its attendant resplendence; and finally, the humanity of Christ.

Knowledge anchors the Christian’s faith in the Rock of ages. Chuck Swindoll, the American nonagenarian pastor and theologian sums up the importance of knowledge exquisitely: “First, knowledge gives substance to faith. Second, knowledge stabilises us during times of testing. Third, knowledge enables us to handle the word of God accurately. Similarly, knowledge equips us to detect and confront error. Furthermore, knowledge makes us confident and consistent in our walk with God. Knowledge filters out our fears and superstitions.”

The purposes set out in this epistle is noble. The first is to enhance and enrich the fellowship of saints. The second is to fill the hearts of believers with joy. Significantly, every believer must seek and make the best of the knowledge of the Person, power and presence of Christ. It is in His presence that we have fellowship one with another. Christian fellowship is two-dimensional. We must know the reality of fellowship with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ before we can know the reality of fellowship with each other in our common relationship to God. The person who is not in fellowship with the Father and the Son is no Christian at all, and so, cannot share with Christians, the realities of their fellowship.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
The more we know the Lord, the better we can deal with men and moments.

Rhapsody Of Realities 5 July 2026: Knowledge Of Your True Nature

Rhapsody Of Realities 5 July 2026 By Pastor Chris Oyakhilome (Christ Embassy): Knowledge Of Your True Nature

TOPIC: Knowledge Of Your True Nature (Rhapsody of Realities 5 July 2026)

These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life… (1 John 5:13).

Rhapsody Of Realities For Today’s MESSAGE:

God wants you to know who you are. Not to guess, not to assume, but to know. The Apostle John, writing by the Spirit, says, “These things have I written unto you…that ye may know that ye have eternal life.” This is about your identity—what you have and who you are in Christ—NOW. You’re divine because you have eternal life, the divine life.

Consider the Apostle John, who wrote what we read in our theme scripture. During the time of the Great Persecution, after John had been arrested, they put him in a large boiling pot to fry him alive. They were determined to destroy him. But when the fire had burnt out and consumed itself, John stood up. They couldn’t kill him because there was something about him.

That’s how the expression came about, “St. John the Divine.” They couldn’t explain him. They said, “This is not an ordinary man.” So they banished him to the island of Patmos and left him there. Now think about it: was John the only one who was divine? No. What made him divine was the life he had, the eternal life of God in him, and the consciousness of that life.

That same life is what you’ve received in Christ. The Bible says you’re a partaker of the divine nature (2 Peter 1:4). That means you’re not an ordinary person. You’re not merely human. You’re a God-being because you have the life of God in your spirit. But this must dawn on you; otherwise, you’ll think, talk, and respond from a natural standpoint. Yet that’s not your true identity.

When the Bible says, “…that ye may know that ye have eternal life…” (1 John 5:13), it means God wants you to know and function by that revelation. He wants it in your present-hour consciousness. He wants you to be fully aware that the life in you is divine. He knows that when this becomes real to you, your responses will reflect your nature and your expectations will rise to match the life in you. Hallelujah!

CONFESSION

I’m a partaker of the divine nature, and I live in the full consciousness of the God-life in me. I walk in dominion, boldness and victory, manifesting Christ in all that I do, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

FURTHER STUDY

2 Peter 1:4 (KJV) Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.

John 1:12-13 (KJV) But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: [13] Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

1 John 4:17 (KJV) Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world.

Paul McCartney Surprises Wedding Guests with Iconic Beatles Performance at Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s Celebration

0

In what can only be described as a night to remember, Sir Paul McCartney reportedly gave newlyweds Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce a musical gift to cherish, performing the timeless Beatles classic, “I Want to Hold Your Hand.” This memorable serenade took place during the couple’s reception at Madison Square Garden last Friday evening.

The intimate moment was shared with news outlet People by a source, who relayed that after the wedding ceremony, Taylor’s mother, Andrea, welcomed guests into the reception area where a stage was perfectly set for the night’s performances.

Adding to the evening’s star power, one of McCartney’s and Swift’s close friends, Fleetwood Mac’s Stevie Nicks, was also in attendance. Known for her captivating performances, Nicks reportedly joined in the festivities, keeping the celebration lively as it extended into the early hours of Saturday morning.

Leading up to the glamorous event, Page Six had exclusively reported about the musical heavyweights lined up to entertain the attendees, including the acclaimed singer-songwriter Tim McGraw, alongside other notable names.

As the public savored the details of this fairy-tale wedding, representatives for both McCartney and Swift declined to immediately comment on the enchanting evening when contacted by Page Six on Saturday.

McCartney and Swift have been friends for years, and once appeared on the cover of Rolling Stone together.

The “Blank Space” hitmaker and NFL star, both 36, summoned a list of 1,000 guests — both A-list celebrities and close family members alike — to celebrate their union at an extravagant celebration at the New York City arena Friday.

A more intimate rehearsal dinner at the same venue Thursday evening was held for 100 members of the couple’s inner circle — including fellow songstress Selena Gomez, sports reporter Erin Andrews, Kelce’s pal Ross Travis and Swift’s longtime publicist, Tree Paine.

Following Friday’s massive bash, signs outside Madison Square Garden read “JUST&T MARRIED” to announce the news that the power couple had finally made things official.

The Empire State Building spires showcased a blue light show, acting as the “Opalite” singer’s “something blue.

A press release subsequently revealed Swift and Kelce wore Christian Dior Haute Couture to exchange vows, that comedian Adam Sandler officiated, and that Swift opted to enlist brother Austin Swift as her “Man of Honor,” while Travis enlisted his own brother, Jason Kelce, as “Best Man.”

After the blowout celebration, stars gushed over the experience on social media — including AMC Theatres CEO Adam Aron, who took to X with a since-deleted play-by-play account of the experience.

Here’s latest on Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s wedding at MSG:

Aron divulged in the post that MSG was “magically” transformed into “an outdoor garden at a lush countryside retreat.”

He wrote that the couple’s vows were “long, entertaining, personal, charming, emotional, irreverent and endearing explorations by each as to how they met, why they want to be with each other for all eternity, the promises they made in joining their much-beloved two whole families as one, and committing to their new mutual life together.”

The moment was followed by a “sweep you off your feet kiss,” he elaborated. During the “exquisite” reception, Aron shared that there was “superb food and drink” and “music, music, music.”

He added, “I wish you were all could have been there with me, to witness real, pure, true joy.”

U.S. State Department Acknowledges Keiko Fujimori’s Victory as Peru’s President-Elect After Narrow Election Results

0

Conservative candidate Keiko Fujimori has been declared the winner of Peru’s presidential runoff election. Her victory, albeit by a slim margin, prompted a congratulatory statement from the U.S. State Department on Tuesday.

This development signals a pivotal moment in Latin American relations, as Washington expressed its intention to collaborate closely with Fujimori’s administration on mutual interests.

“The United States congratulates President-Elect Keiko Fujimori of Peru on her important electoral victory,” stated the department, reflecting a sense of optimism for what lies ahead in bilateral ties.

The statement highlighted the Trump Administration’s eagerness to bolster security cooperation and strengthen economic collaborations through investment and trade between the two nations.

Her victory comes as Washington seeks to strengthen ties with pro-market allies in Latin America amid growing Chinese economic influence in the region.

Beijing recently completed the Chancay deepwater port in Peru — a $1.3 billion mega-project that serves as China’s key logistics hub on the Pacific coast.

Fujimori’s tough stance on organized crime also aligns with U.S. efforts to expand regional security and anti-trafficking cooperation.

Fujimori was declared the winner Monday by Peru’s National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE), the electoral authority responsible for reporting vote count results. The country’s final authority on election matters, the National Jury of Elections (JNE), has yet to issue its official proclamation, according to Reuters.

According to the ONPE, Fujimori secured 50.1% of the vote, winning by fewer than 50,000 votes out of roughly 18 million ballots cast.

Her victory over leftist challenger Roberto Sánchez marks her fourth presidential bid and makes her Peru’s first female president-elect.

The result caps a deeply divisive election cycle in a country that has gone through nine presidents in the past decade.

Fujimori is also the daughter of former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori, who ruled the country during the 1990s.

Fujimori’s presidency marks a return of her family’s political brand to Peru’s highest office — a movement that has long carried a complicated relationship with the United States.

While Washington once backed her father for his fight against communist guerrillas and economic reforms in the 1990s, the U.S. later condemned his government over the dismantling of democratic institutions and allegations of human rights abuses.

Keiko Fujimori has since spent more than two decades attempting to reshape “Fujimorismo” into a modern conservative, law-and-order political movement.

Peruvians voted in favor of Fujimori amid a surge in violent crime, extortion and years of political instability.

Fujimori campaigned on an “iron fist” approach to security and a pledge to protect Peru’s free-market economy, while her opponent focused on rural economic grievances.
