Empire State Building Security Flaws Exposed: Climber Stunt and Tourist Insight Highlight Vulnerabilities

0

A New York City adventure took an unexpected twist when a tourist witnessed a couple slipping through what seemed to be a forbidden access point at the Empire State Building. Just moments later, the fearless duo made headlines by climbing the iconic landmark’s 1,454-foot antenna to stage a daring marriage proposal. Their actions, culminating in an arrest, have sparked discussions about security measures at the famous site.

Julie Morris recalled her astonishing experience to WABC-TV. She had been taking in the views from the building’s 102nd-floor observation deck when she noticed two individuals confidently bypassing a mesh gate. It led them into an area that certainly seemed off-limits, heading straight for the antenna.

“I was at the very top when these two people appeared. They just opened the mesh gate. I assumed they were employees, and nobody seemed to intervene,” Morris shared with a mix of disbelief and intrigue.

Authorities later identified these intrepid climbers as Angela Nikolau, 33, and Ivan Kuznetsov, 32. This Russian couple has gained notoriety for their exhilarating climbs of skyscrapers and towering edifices worldwide. Their thrilling escapades were previously chronicled in the 2024 Netflix documentary, “Skywalkers: A Love Story,” which showcased their unauthorized ascents.

Adding another layer to their bold stunt, the couple was spotted holding a large banner atop the Empire State Building on July 1, 2026, a sight that captured the attention of many New Yorkers below. (WNYW)

The couple climbed the Empire State Building’s iconic transmitter, unfurled a banner reading, “When the power of love beats the love of power, the world knows peace,” then embraced before Kuznetsov got down on one knee and proposed.

After she said yes, Nikolau admired the ring before the couple continued climbing down the spire, where officers with the NYPD Emergency Service Unit met them and took them into custody.

Police arrested the pair on charges of burglary, reckless endangerment, criminal mischief, criminal trespass, criminal tampering, possession of burglar’s tools, disorderly conduct and other offenses.

Police are reviewing surveillance footage and believe the pair entered the antenna through a locked maintenance hatch on the 102nd-floor observation deck after apparently watching staff movements, WABC reported. Detectives are also investigating how the hatch was opened.

The Empire State Building did not answer questions about how the climbers reached the antenna or whether they had any interactions with security personnel before accessing the restricted area.

In a statement, building management said the climb was “unauthorized” and insisted there was “at no time danger to tenants, visitors, and Empire State Building Observation Deck guests.” Management added that the observation deck “does offer a practical way for the most memorable marriage proposals.”

The stunt briefly disrupted visits to the landmark, with some tourists evacuated from observation decks while police responded.

“At first, it was kind of like comical and seemed a little bit wild and crazy,” witness Laura Staub told the local station. “And then I’ll be honest, once you’re out on the observation deck, I was like, I feel like we shouldn’t be out here. It didn’t really seem like super safe.”

News helicopter footage showed the couple, dressed in black and without visible safety tethers, balancing on a narrow ledge atop the antenna before climbing back down through the latticework of the spire. NYPD bodycam footage later showed officers greeting the pair inside the structure before escorting them to safety.

Nikolau later posted images of the proposal and ring on social media.

Wimbledon Drama: French Open Winner Mirra Andreeva, 19, Tearful After Loss Amidst English Goal Cheers and Racket Toss

Mirra Andreeva, the French Open champion, found herself in tears during a media interview after being ousted in the second round at Wimbledon by 2024 victor Barbora Krejcikova.

Just after the match concluded, Andreeva tossed her racquet in frustration. The Czech player triumphed over last month’s French Open winner by securing a hard-fought win with scores of 6-4, 7-5, 6-4.

During her post-match press conference, a tearful Andreeva confessed she would require “a couple of days” to process the outcome and gather her thoughts.

“I’m uncertain about my upcoming tournament plans,” she said. “I need to consult with my team to determine where I will compete next.”

Since making her mark on the professional scene in 2024, Andreeva has shown great promise but has occasionally battled with maintaining her fiery temper, notably smashing her racquet during a three-set loss while defending her Indian Wells title in March.

After defeat on Centre Court, Andreeva followed up her racquet-flinging by telling her box ‘I quit’, but was professional at the net as she congratulated Krejcikova and accepted some consoling words from the 30-year-old.

Racquet abuse, particularly on the pristine first-week turf of Centre Court, can carry a considerable fine, with Novak Djokovic handed a £6,117 penalty in 2023 after smashing his racquet against the net post.

‘At Grand Slams possible fines are determined and issued by the Grand Slam supervisors in due course,’ the All England Club told Daily Mail Sport when contacted for comment.

There was also some suggestion that Andreeva had been distracted by England’s winning goal, scored during the third set, but she strongly denied that had been the case after the dust had settled.

‘I didn’t know that,’ Andreeva said when told there was an England match being played during her match. ‘I didn’t feel like they were super loud.

‘They did it when she was still going to the baseline to return, so it didn’t bother me at all. I didn’t feel like it was super loud, as well.

Andreeva had cut a frustrated figure during the later stages of the match, and was further unsettled in the third set when a bracelet she was wearing snapped, spilling beads across the surface of the court.

She was then helped by members of the grounds staff to pick the beads up, and was given a hindrance call.

The teenager also spent sections of the match yelling at her coach Conchita Martinez in her player box, and in more troubling scenes, even hit herself over the head with her racquet as she vented her spleen.

After she was beaten in Indian Wells, she told the crowd ‘f*** you all’ in an uncontrollable outburst, but often, her temper turns in on herself.

Andreeva emotionally told herself, ‘I’m not a champion. I’m not a champion. I will lose. I will lose,’ during her Madrid Open match against Anna Bondar – but fought back to claim the hard-won victory in three tight sets.

Krejcikova’s post-Wimbledon-win career has been speckled with injury issues, most recently forcing her to concede the Libema Open title at ‘s-Hertogenbosch after withdrawing with a respiratory illness.

‘It’s definitely special (winning today),’ the Czech star said during her on-court interview. ‘I have been through a lot with injuries and my personal life.

‘The last couple months were really hard to get through with the emotions of what has happened.

‘But, I put lots of work and dedication in every single day. I try to go day by day. Thank you to my team in the box and everyone who stays back in Czech Republic.’

Colorado Teen Discovered After Stepfather Allegedly Aided Police Evasion

A teenager accused of the fatal shooting of a Penn State University student and the theft of his phone was apprehended in Colorado. His stepfather is suspected of assisting him in evading law enforcement.

Azzubair Outen-Fleming, 16, was captured by US Marshals in Colorado Springs on Wednesday. This arrest comes nearly a month after he was identified as a suspect in the murder of 22-year-old Billy Schmidt, which occurred on the streets of South Philadelphia.

Authorities are still on the lookout for a second suspect, 16-year-old Kaiseem Smith, who remains at large.

The arrest of Outen-Fleming occurred just hours after his stepfather, Donte Abdulmalik, was taken into custody. Abdulmalik faces charges including hindering apprehension, obstructing justice, and tampering with evidence.

Abdulmalik, 35, is accused of assisting Outen-Fleming in fleeing from Pennsylvania and helping him hide over 1,500 miles away in Colorado.

The teen was found at a distant relative’s home and, after initially trying to deny his identity, was arrested by the US Marshals Service (USMS) Colorado Violent Offender Task Force, according to officials.

He is being held at the Zebulon Pike Youth Center, awaiting extradition to Philadelphia.

Outen-Fleming and Smith are expected to face multiple charges, including murder, criminal conspiracy and robbery, among other offences, according to the District Attorney’s Office.

Authorities said up to $30,000 in reward money is being offered for information in the case as the search continues for Smith, who is described as around 4ft10.

The office said that both boys will be charged as adults.

‘There’s nothing that is going to bring him back. So, nothing is going to be enough for me,’ William Schmidt, the victim’s father, told WPVI News.

The death of his son, who was gunned down just across the street from the family home, has made living near the crime scene unbearable, he told the outlet.

‘It was just me and him here, and you know, it’s a three-bedroom house. So, I just need to get out, right now.’

William ‘Billy’ Schmidt, who had just finished his third year at Pennsylvania State University, was shot dead around 1.30am on June 6 while walking home from an NBA Finals watch party at a local bar.

He was moments from reaching his family home on the 1900 block of Durfor Street when he came face to face with the two masked suspects, with disturbing footage capturing the scene.

Outen-Fleming appeared to grab Schmidt’s phone, punch him and then rummage through the student’s pockets.

Both teens allegedly knocked Schmidt to the sidewalk before walking away, with a suspect who is believed to be Smith ‘observed with a gun in his hand.’

The footage showed Schmidt walking behind the two suspects and pleading for his phone, before one of them is seen throwing it down the block.

In the videos, taken by multiple cameras from different angles, two young men in dark clothing with their hoods up can be seen talking to Schmidt, who could be heard saying: ‘Give me back my phone.’

The DA’s office said the two teens then split up.

Smith reached into his back pocket, pulled out a gun and fired a deadly shot into Schmidt’s chest, prosecutors say.

The teens disposed of their hoodies and masks before walking away from the scene and getting into an SUV, according to the DA. At that point, both men were wearing white t–shirts, police said.

Schmidt was quickly rushed to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead just 17 minutes after the shooting.

‘Over a phone. It’s abhorrent. It’s just unbelievable that someone would kill someone over a phone,’ Ezra Roulinavage, one of the family’s neighbors, told NBC Philadelphia.

The 44-year-old prince shared these sentiments in a heartfelt video message created for a digital memorial honoring his grandmother. This platform allows the public to contribute their own remembrances of the iconic monarch, who passed away in September 2022. William reminisced about his student days at Eton College, when he frequently visited the Queen and her late husband, Prince Philip, enjoying delightful teatime conversations over cake at Windsor Castle.

Speaking in a video filmed at Windsor Castle, William said: “Whilst I had the privilege to know the late Queen better than most, some of my fondest memories of my grandmother are from here in Windsor.

“I remember many a quiet afternoon, having tea with her and my grandfather at the castle, chatting, sharing stories, and seeing how completely at ease she was here, surrounded by family and her much-loved dogs and horses.

Urgent FDA Alert: Potato Chip Recall Now a Top Health Hazard

(NewsNation) – It’s been almost two months since Utz Quality Foods initiated a voluntary recall concerning specific varieties of Zapp’s and Dirty brand potato chips. This recall has now escalated to the most critical level recognized by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) due to potential salmonella contamination.

Originally, the chips were recalled by the company in May. Recently, the FDA updated the status to a Class I recall. This classification indicates a “situation in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of or exposure to a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death,” as explained by the agency.

The products involved in this recall include:

  • 8-ounce Zapp’s Brand Bayou Blackened Ranch Potato Chips
  • 2-ounce Dirty Brand Salt and Vinegar Potato Chips
  • 1.5-ounce Zapp’s Brand Salt and Vinegar Potato Chips (60 count)
  • 2-ounce Dirty Brand Maui Onion Potato Chip
  • 2.5-ounce Zapp’s Brand Big Cheezy Potato Chip
  • 8-ounce Zapp’s Brand Big Cheezy Potato Chip
  • 2-ounce Dirty Brand Sour Cream and Onion Potato Chips
  • Salmonella can cause serious, sometimes fatal, infections in young children, elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.

Utz issued the recall “out of an abundance of caution,” as the affected seasoning batches tested negative before use.

No illnesses have been reported to Utz in connection with the recalled products.

Consumers are advised to discard the chips immediately. For refunds and questions, consumers can call 1-877-423-0149 Monday through Friday during standard business hours.

Alex Rodriguez Spotted Kissing Unidentified Companion at Celeb-Filled Bash After Jaclyn Cordeiro Split

    0

Fireworks illuminated the sky, but it was Alex Rodriguez who added a romantic spark to the Fourth of July celebrations.

The former baseball star created quite a stir when he was seen sharing an intimate moment with an unidentified woman at the glamorous party hosted by Michael Rubin in the Hamptons.

Captured by cameras and revealed by Page Six, Rodriguez was caught in a cozy exchange with a brunette, moments before the duo indulged in a passionate kiss.

The event saw both Rodriguez and his mysterious companion dressed entirely in white, leaning in for a romantic clinch as she affectionately held the back of his head.

This isn’t the first time Rodriguez’s social outings have attracted attention; back in May, reports from Page Six noted his flirtatious demeanor with several women at the Corner Store, a celebrity-favored venue in New York City.

The former MLB star’s PDA comes weeks after his split from longtime girlfriend Jaclyn Cordeiro made headlines.

Rodriguez, 50, and Cordeiro, 46, were together for three years before she confirmed their breakup to TMZ in May.

“To clarify, Alex and I are currently taking some time apart but there continues to be mutual love, care, and deep respect between us and for our families,” the bodybuilder told the outlet in a statement at the time.

“We remain supportive of one another, and there is absolutely no animosity, drama, or negative story here,” she added.

Cordeiro also shared that she is also “navigating a serious health matter involving a family member at this time,” which is where her focus lies.

“Alex and I continue to be very close, and out of respect for everyone involved especially our daughters and loved ones I’d kindly ask that any reporting reflects the compassion and privacy this situation deserves,” she concluded.

The former New York Yankees player and the personal trainer were first romantically linked in 2022, when Page Six exclusively reported the pair were “enjoying spending time” together.

A few weeks later, they went Instagram official while spending the holidays together in NYC.

Prior to his relationship with Cordeiro, the businessman was engaged to Jennifer Lopez from 2019 to 2021.

Page exclusively reported in March of 2021 that the duo broke off the engagement following ongoing rumors of his infidelity.

Before that, Rodriguez was married to Cynthia Scurtis from 2002 to 2008, and the exes share daughters Natasha and Ella.

Scurtis ultimately filed for divorce in 2008 due to the “emotional abandonment” of their children, as well as infidelity.

Residents Clash with Housing Leaders Over Homeless Crisis in Beach Community

    0

Tensions hit a boiling point in a coastal Los Angeles neighborhood this week, as over 100 residents confronted the management of two local supportive housing programs. The community members voiced concerns over what they perceive as escalating crime rates and a decline in public safety.

During a crowded Monday meeting, one resident highlighted the gravity of the situation, recounting how Venice, California locals are encountering “dead bodies” during regular cleanups. Others expressed worries about drug-related activities, trespassing, and a reluctance to let their children roam the neighborhood unaccompanied.

The heated discussions focused on two supportive housing initiatives, The Journey Program and Safe Place for Youth, both situated on Lincoln Boulevard. Residents allege that since these programs launched around 18 months ago to tackle local homelessness, there has been a noticeable decline in neighborhood safety and living conditions.

While residents scrutinized the influence of these programs on their community, Venice Community Housing stands firm in its belief. Their website states, “Providing supportive services in conjunction with stable housing is the proven long-term solution to end homelessness.”

The organization also says it provides “trauma-informed resources and supports” to help tenants secure and maintain housing, improve health, enhance education and thrive in their communities.

“This feels like a lot of lip service and not a lot of action,” one resident said as tempers flared.

Residents painted a grim picture of daily life surrounding the facilities.

“We’re finding dead bodies as we’re doing our daily s— and p— cleanup every morning,” one resident told the crowd.

Another parent said, “I don’t feel safe sending my teenage kids out to walk the dogs on their own, and that’s ridiculous.”

Others described feeling trapped in their own neighborhood.

“We’re getting traumatized. Our lived experience is getting destroyed,” another resident said.

Neighbors accused the facilities of bringing more crime, drug activity, trespassing, illegal dumping and violence to the area, prompting residents and business owners to demand increased security, stronger oversight and accountability from the organizations operating the programs.

After the meeting, FOX 11 asked Venice Community Housing Co-Executive Director Allison Riley why she declined to answer questions on camera.

“I’m sorry, I don’t want to be interviewed on camera today,” Riley said.

When pressed about residents demanding accountability over violence and drug activity spilling into surrounding streets, Riley responded, “We’re trying to give that to the community, and we will keep working on that.”

Los Angeles City Councilmember Traci Park said her office has heard complaints from neighbors for months and warned the organizations that future city funding could be jeopardized if conditions fail to improve.

“We are going to continue to fix this and hold these people responsible for providing their own security, for ensuring that the neighborhood around these facilities remains safe,” Park said.

“And you know what? Then we will start talking about walking back their future funding.”

In a post on her official Facebook page after the meeting, Park thanked residents for organizing and attending the meeting and said communities are “right to expect accountability” when taxpayer dollars are invested in homeless housing solutions.

“I’m already taking steps legislatively, and you have our continued commitment to work with LAPD and VCH/SPY, to correct these issues,” Park wrote.

Residents left the meeting unconvinced that enough is being done, saying they want to see meaningful changes instead of more promises.

“It can’t just be an open door,” one business owner said. “Actions need to start having consequences.”

News Media reached out to Councilmember Traci Park, Venice Community Housing Co-Executive Director Allison Riley, the Journey Program, Safe Place for Youth and the Los Angeles Police Department for comment.

TLC Star Deon Derrico Speaks Out on Emotional Legal Battle with Karen Derrico

Deon Derrico has spoken out following his ex-wife Karen Derrico’s recent arrest.

In an exclusive conversation, the former TLC personality responded to accusations from Karen’s legal team. They claim that recent emails, which purportedly contain threats sent from Karen to Deon, were fabricated by him.

“It’s absolutely egregious,” Deon stated. “I find these accusations completely absurd and unfounded. There is no possible way I could or would hack into her email.”

Deon Derrico Reacts To Karen Derrico’s Phone Call

Deon also addressed a phone call released by TMZ on June 25, in which Karen is allegedly heard arguing with one of their 14 children.

“I believe it’s utterly unacceptable for any parent, particularly a mother, to speak in such a manner to their child,” remarked Deon. “I am committed to ensuring my children receive the best support and assistance they need during this time.”

    Karen Derrico Pleads Not Guilty

In response to the audio, Karen’s attorney Jess Marchese described the phone call to Oxygen as a “total nothing burger” and “not a crime.”

The audio was published two days after Karen was arraigned on charges of violating a temporary restraining order, harassment, aggravated stalking and preventing or dissuading a witness from testifying or producing evidence with immediate threat or use of physical force, according to a criminal complaint provided to Oxygen.

Deon Derrico Feels Like He’s Experienced A Death

As for how he feels now, Deon says he feels like “someone died.”

“I feel [that way] because something died,” he told Oxygen. “Something that I loved died and that was us as a unit, as a whole, and our family is torn in two. So something has died. What has died was the way we once were, and we’ll never be that way again.”
