Tyra Banks Takes Legal Action Against Netflix Over Unauthorized America’s Next Top Model Documentary

0

Tyra Banks has filed a lawsuit against Netflix, accusing the streaming giant of defamation related to its documentary on America’s Next Top Model.

The 52-year-old former supermodel participated in Netflix’s docuseries titled Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model, which debuted in February and stirred controversy, reigniting discussions around her popular reality series.

Banks claims that the producers used only 16 minutes of a more than three-hour interview, editing it in a manner she describes as producing a ‘false and defamatory narrative,’ according to legal papers obtained by TMZ.

The lawsuit contends that the series employed ‘selective editing, deliberate omission, and surgical manipulation’ of footage, which allegedly resulted in a misleading narrative, including the claim ‘that Ms. Banks knowingly permitted a contestant to be sexually assaulted on her show.’

Additionally, the complaint accuses the series of implying that Banks exploited the contestant’s trauma for viewer ratings and later failed to remember the incident during inquiries.

A central focus of the docuseries is Cycle 2 contestant Shandi Sullivan’s allegation that she was not properly protected after a sexual assault involving a guest during filming.

The incident, she claims, was later reframed on the show as an infidelity storyline, but Banks disputes that portrayal.

In the lawsuit, she states she was not aware Sullivan would be participating in the documentary and insists she has acknowledged the incident as a sexual assault, with the filing calling the implication that she ‘cannot even remember’ the case ‘devastating and deliberate.’

Banks is requesting a jury trial to determine the ‘appropriate’ amount she should be awarded in damages.

The Daily Mail has reached out to Netflix for comment.

Banks hosted America’s Next Top Model for its first 22 cycles after pitching the series to UPN, with the show debuting in 2003.

‘Tyra Banks participated in the Netflix documentary series America’s Next Top Model (‘ANTM’) because she believed viewers deserved a candid conversation about the show’s legacy – its successes and its shortcomings,’ the lawsuit begins.

‘There are aspects of the show for which Ms. Banks takes accountability and she wanted ANTM viewers to hear that from her directly.’

‘Going into her interview, Ms. Banks did not limit the ANTM topics the interviewer could ask,’ the filing continues.

Over the course of a three-and-a-half-hour interview, she answered questions about the show’s impact and its groundbreaking history, including criticism of decisions she would handle differently today.

‘The Netflix series Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model (the ‘Netflix Series’) was sold to viewers as a ‘documentary series’,’ the lawsuit states. ‘Netflix called it ‘the definitive, must-watch chronicle of America’s Next Top Model’.

‘The genre matters. Viewers of a documentary do not expect manufactured drama or constructed narratives. They expect facts. Because they were promised a documentary, that is exactly how viewers interacted with the Netflix Series.’

Banks alleges that only 16 minutes of her extensive interview footage was ultimately used, with those clips ‘stripped of context and reassembled to support a false and defamatory narrative unrelated to what she actually expressed’.

She further claims that moments in which she accepted responsibility for some of the show’s most controversial incidents were omitted from the final cut.

The lawsuit adds, ‘Worse, the false narrative the producers constructed – through selective editing, deliberate omission, and surgical manipulation of continuous footage – included that Ms. Banks knowingly allowed a contestant to be sexually assaulted on her show, exploited that contestant’s trauma for ratings, and then could not even remember it when asked.

‘That narrative about Ms. Banks is a complete fabrication – one that Netflix streamed to a global audience of millions.’

In the documentary, Sullivan spoke candidly about the incident during Cycle 2, which has since become one of the most discussed moments from the show’s early seasons.

Footage from the series showed Sullivan appearing to have a sexual encounter with an Italian model, before later breaking down in tears while calling her boyfriend, who ultimately ended their relationship.

However, Sullivan has since claimed that what was originally portrayed as a drunken indiscretion was in fact a sexual assault, saying she had ‘blacked out’ due to alcohol and that ‘no one did anything to stop it.’

Speaking in the Netflix series, she recalled: ‘I remember being in the shower. And then just sitting in the shower. And then we were in the bed.’

She added: ‘I was blacked out for a lot of it. I didn’t even feel sex happening, I just knew it was happening, and then I passed out.’

Reflecting on the production, Sullivan suggested staff should have intervened, saying: ‘I think after getting out of the hot tub, and whatever happened after that, I think they should’ve been like, “All right, this has gone too far. We gotta pull her out of this.”’

Executive producer Ken Mok appeared to defend the approach, saying the show was always intended to function as a documentary-style production.

‘We told the girls that on day one, when they would show up, “There’s going to be cameras with you 24/7, day in and day out, and they’re going to cover everything,”’ he said.

Banks, meanwhile, said in the doc: ‘It’s a little difficult for me to talk about production because that’s not my territory.’

Controversial Dinner Event with Anti-Israel Activists Commands $5,000 Entry Fee

0

A dinner ostensibly aimed at celebrating the Jewish Sabbath has sparked controversy, with critics labeling it a gathering of radical anti-Israel activists, as reported by The Post.

The Friday night event, organized by the activist group Climate Defiance, featured ticket prices reaching up to $5,000. Attendees included a prominent lineup of left-leaning figures, such as outspoken anti-Israel activist Linda Sarsour; Democratic congressional hopeful Brad Lander; Tiffany Caban, a Queens Democratic socialist known for her activism against the Gaza conflict; and Abby Stein, a trans rabbi linked to Mayor Mamdani, also noted for her anti-Israel stance.

Hosted at the residence of filmmaker and social activist Jill Goldman, the dinner offered a kosher and vegan-friendly menu and was held in conjunction with a celebration of the Tribeca Film Festival’s climate-focused film “Just Look Up.” The film documents the efforts of Michael Greenberg, the founder of Climate Defiance.

The invitation for the event promised an intimate setting with “no phones, no cameras, no tech,” encouraging guests to “break bread” and “build community.” It aimed to bring together allies from diverse “faiths, backgrounds, and traditions.”

However, critics remained skeptical about the event’s purported inclusivity and intersectional approach.

“Why is this being done in secrecy? What is it that you’re going to say that needs to be hidden from the public? Knowing who the players are, this feels like it’s using Shabbat as a cover,” Jewish activist Tali Goldsheft of the “Politically Homeless No More” movement fumed to The Post, alleging the ban on devices at the end shields it from potential scrutiny.

Earlier this month Israel banned Sarsour, the former co-chair of the Women’s March, from a planned visit, which drew outrage from anti-Israel group CAIR.

Lander, the former city comptroller, has been accused of fueling the anti-Israel BDS movement by divesting government funds from Israel bonds when they matured. This month, he appeared in an ad for hateful far-left Democratic socialist, US-bashing congressional hopeful Darializa Avila Chevalier.

The Boycott, Divest and Sanction, or BDS, campaign is an international effort aimed at isolating and delegitimizing the world’s only Jewish state.

“Like David Duke, Linda Sarsour is a bigot and a social pariah,” ripped Goldsheft, who accused the Jewish Lander of “using a Jewish tradition to promote himself alongside Sarsour,” who came under fire for her fealty to antisemite Louis Farrakhan.

Dubious onlookers moaned that the melting pot meal was anything but kosher.

“Rather than ‘Shabbat dinner,’ this is nothing more than a ‘Jew-hater dinner,’” said Michelle Ahdoot of End Jew Hatred.

“These very same people advocate for the racist BDS movement, which is unacceptable in today’s society, and frankly, this foursome’s Jew-hatred is unacceptable at any event, most of all at one that they dare to frame as a Shabbat dinner,” she added.

Climate Defiance, Lander and Sarsour did not return The Post’s requests for comment.

Trump’s Name Stripped from Kennedy Center After Court Ruling: DOJ Compliance Update

0

The Justice Department has officially confirmed in federal court that President Donald Trump’s name has been taken down from all signage on the Kennedy Center’s building and grounds. This announcement came just an hour before a judge’s deadline set for Saturday at noon.

Initially, the Trump administration attempted a last-ditch effort to prevent the removal of Trump’s name, requesting the court to intervene before the midnight deadline on Friday.

The government asked for a brief extension of 12 hours, citing delays due to thunderstorms in Washington, D.C., which posed safety risks for the workers involved, as stated in their recent court filing.

A federal judge in D.C. mandated that the Trump administration confirm by noon on Saturday that they had adhered to the court’s order to remove the name, even granting a short extension to accommodate the request.

This extension followed a decision by a federal appeals court late Friday night, which denied the Department of Justice’s appeal for an immediate stay on the court’s ruling requiring the name’s removal from the iconic Washington, D.C., performing arts center.

In an earlier filing with the D.C. Circuit, the Trump administration argued that removing Trump’s name would stall fundraising, prevent repairs from taking place and confuse the public.

“No one else other than President Trump would be in the position of both rebuilding the Building, and raising the money for its operation,” the filing stated, saying the performing arts center can be ” the envy of the World,” and arguing the building could suffer a “financial and structural collapse.”

Trump’s name has already been removed from the Kennedy Center’s website and YouTube page.

This is a developing story. Please check back for updates.

World Cup Dilemma: Australian Soccer Star Faces Loyalty Conflict Amid Global Tournament

0

IN BRIEF

  • Australia will take on Türkiye in Vancouver, Canada, on 14 June.
  • The son of Turkish Cypriots, Behich was raised on Turkish football and spent much of his career playing in Türkiye.

Aziz Behich, a key defender for the Socceroos, is gearing up for a thrilling FIFA World Cup. However, the first match comes with mixed emotions for the player.

Born in Melbourne, Behich is set to face a team close to his heart—Türkiye, a place he considers his second home.

“It’s an important match for me, I’m excited,” Behich shared with SBS Turkish, reflecting on the upcoming challenge.

Though he proudly dons the green and gold today, Behich’s career roots run deep in Türkiye. He spent nine significant seasons in the Turkish Süper Lig, predominantly with Bursaspor, a period he fondly recounts.

“I spent more than half my career in Türkiye,” Behich noted, emphasizing the profound influence his time there has had on his professional journey.

“Türkiye holds a very special place in my life … It’ll be different, but at the end of the day, it’s a football match. It’s all about three points.”

One of the most decorated Socceroos in this year’s squad, Behich said the team has prepared as best they can for their opener.

“Hopefully, we’ll come away with a good result from this match,” he said.

“Hopefully the three points will be ours, but more importantly, it’ll be a good football match for the fans to watch.”

The son of Turkish Cypriots, Behich was raised on Turkish football — waking up in the early hours of the night to watch the Super Lig.

His father, Yasar Behich, was a staunch supporter of Istanbul giants Galatasaray, but switched to Bursaspor when his son donned the jersey.

The elder Behich recalls introducing his son to the game.

“When I introduced Aziz to football, my initial concern was that he shouldn’t pick up bad habits; children who play sports don’t pick up bad habits,” he said.

“That’s why I encouraged him to take up sports. My advice is children should always do sports.”

A loyal fan and father, Yasar Behich has “mixed” feelings about Sunday’s match.

“I want both teams — Türkiye and Australia — to progress from the group stage,” he said.

He’ll be watching the match with his wife, brother, daughter and daughter-in-law.

“We’ve all come to watch and support Aziz.”

Behich isn’t the only one torn between the two teams. For many World Cup-loving Australians who call Türkiye home, it’s a test of loyalty.

Mehmet Turgut has lived in Melbourne since 1970. Despite calling Australia home, he’s hoping Türkiye will win.

“I’d like to see both teams win, but Türkiye is, of course, different. It’s different in our hearts, in our souls,” he said.

Similar to Behich, Tansel Baser was born and raised in Melbourne but played football in Türkiye.

He hopes the “friendship wins out”.

“I hope neither the Turkish community nor the Australian community is left disappointed. I hope the two of them come out of the group hand in hand, God willing,” he said.

For Yücel Sönmez, it’s less about the match and more about Behich.

“Aziz is one of our own. He plays for Australia. He’s played for various teams in Türkiye. We want him to succeed too,” he said.

“He’s one of our own. But, of course, our hearts are with Türkiye. Let’s hope Behich doesn’t fail either.”

Controversy Erupts: Trump’s Senate Candidate Faces Explosive ‘Stolen Valor’ Allegations

0

An Alabama congressman, who has received the endorsement of former President Donald Trump, is now embroiled in serious allegations of ‘stolen valor’ as the fierce Republican Senate runoff in the state draws to a close.

Reports from a number of local media outlets in Alabama suggest that Congressman Barry Moore has exaggerated his military service record while serving in public office and during his campaign efforts.

As voters prepare to cast their ballots this Tuesday, comments from Moore’s wife appear to be complicating his situation rather than aiding his campaign.

A defeat for Moore would mark another setback for Trump, following the recent loss of his endorsed candidate, Congressman Randy Feenstra, in the Iowa governor primary earlier this month.

Heather Moore, Congressman Moore’s wife, recently claimed that her husband served in the military for eight years, according to a report by the Franklin Free Press, a local Alabama news outlet.

Moore’s campaign told the Daily Mail that he served ‘more than six years.’

But according to documents released by Moore’s campaign since the controversy broke last weekend, he served in the National Guard for just over two and a half years, before receiving an honorable discharge in July 1991.

A former senior staffer from Moore’s congressional office told the Daily Mail he has been ‘intentionally misleading’ about his service record for years.

Moore’s wife’s discrepancy was quickly called out by online commenters who accused Heather of a brazen untruth.

Verified Facebook user Jesse Bowman, resharing the records Moore’s campaign released amid the firestorm, noted that they showed just over two and a half years of service and that Moore ‘was never a staff sergeant, just paid as one.’ The campaign, he added, was ‘in a mess and trying their best to spin it.’

Another strand of the controversy surrounding Moore’s military record stems from a letter by the Trump-Vance campaign in 2024 that referred to him as a Staff Sergeant while attacking former Democratic vice-presidential nominee Tim Walz over his own service record.

Moore never held that rank and Moore’s campaign noted that the candidate has never called himself a Staff Sergeant.

Laura Johnston Etheredge also chimed in online, noting ‘No Veteran counts IRR [Individual Ready Reserve] when you ask how long they served. That’s embarrassing for him,’ in a response to Bowman.

The Individual Ready Reserve, also known as IRR, ‘is made up of service members who have left active duty or traditional reserve roles with remaining time on their original service contract,’ per Task and Purpose. They are generally inactive, do not drill, and do not get paid.

Moore completed ten weeks of basic training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, in 1989 – but released records show he never completed training for a specific military occupational specialty (MOS).

Moore’s campaign told the Daily Mail that ‘Barry Moore served in the Alabama National Guard and Army Reserve for more than six years and was honorably discharged. He has never claimed combat service and has been open about his military background.’

Sources familiar with military rank and promotion structure told the Daily Mail that without an MOS, Moore was never deployable.

Multiple former staffers said that early in his congressional tenure, senior staff took a deliberate decision to avoid the word ‘veteran’ in all communications – because Moore did not meet the qualifications – substituting ‘former service member’ instead.

In a further eyebrow-raising revelation, the Daily Mail has learned that Moore was  typically accompanied by veteran staffers onto military bases, as he lacked the active-duty or veteran ID card needed for independent access.

Moore’s campaign told the Daily Mail that ‘anonymous stories about staff members do not alter his military record.’

There were also internal discussions about obtaining a visitor’s pass for Moore, but the idea was shelved over concerns about the ‘optics’ of explaining why he had no base ID in the first place.

Moore has hit back: ‘I have never claimed service or honors I didn’t earn. Because Jared Hudson’s campaign is behind in the polls, he is willing to insult 39,738 Alabamians who serve in the National Guard and Army Reserves.’

His Republican primary opponent, former Navy SEAL Jared Hudson, has responded by pointing to servicemembers.

‘You don’t need to hear what Jared Hudson has to say – there are 30,000 to 40,000 guardsmen in Alabama who serve regularly. Why don’t you listen to what a few of them think about Congressman Moore’s service?’

Moore’s campaign said he served ‘honorably’ in the Alabama Army National Guard and US Army Reserve from 1988 to 1997.

But retired Army Reserve Lt. Col. Ross Cline, writing in Yellowhammer News, said Moore ‘turned two months of basic training into a fabricated military identity.’

Asked whether Moore qualifies as a veteran, his campaign was unequivocal: ‘Yes. The VA issued him a Veteran Identification Card… The discrepancy lies with third-party misrepresentations.’

The Daily Mail can also exclusively reveal Moore’s campaigns have paid his wife Heather nearly $50,000 through her LLC, Chicken and Biscuits, for digital and strategy consulting.

The campaign said her ‘role is legitimate’ and her pay ‘reported as required by law.’

A Facebook ad in which Moore claimed to be a veteran ran last month.

Voters render a verdict on Tuesday and in ruby-red Alabama, the winner is heavily favored to be the state’s next senator.

Unveiling America’s Top 10 Dirtiest Cities: Surprising Rankings and Environmental Insights

0

Here’s a fresh take on America’s pollution dilemma.

A recent survey has pinpointed the US cities grappling most with pollution, considering factors like air quality, waste management, and their impacts on residents’ physical and mental health.

This study, carried out by the landscape maintenance firm LawnStarter, evaluated over 300 prominent US cities using data from government bodies such as the Environmental Protection Agency, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the US Census Bureau, and County Health Rankings.

The results were categorized into four main areas: pollution levels, subpar living conditions, inefficient waste management systems, and resident dissatisfaction.

Each city received a score out of 100, where higher scores signified the most polluted locales.

While New York City managed to skirt the top 10, the Big Apple’s unofficial 6th borough, Newark, NJ, was outed as the 6th most unsanitary city, with an overall score of 48.06.

But it’s Newark’s resident dissatisfaction rate where they really shone, ranking 3rd out of 303 cities in total.

Meanwhile, two California cities, San Bernardino and Los Angeles, took the top two spots, respectively, along with Ontario, which sits about halfway between the aforementioned metropolises, at no. 5.

This marked the former’s second year at no.1, thanks to their poor air quality — tying yet another Cali city, Ontario, for the worst in that category — as well as egregiously littered roadways, prevalence of junk yards (12 in all), and a 75% share of residents who say they’re dissatisfied with the city’s level of pollution.

Overall, a total of nine Golden State cities tied for the worst median air quality out of 100, one of the strongest showings by state on the list.

Detroit came in at no. 3, owing to the Motor City’s large population of smokers at nearly 24%, high toxic chemical waste management activity and inadequate living conditions.

Rounding out the top 5 leaves Reading, Pennsylvania, at no. 4, where they boast 18.42 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions per capita.

10 most dirty US cities

  1. San Bernardino, California
  2. Los Angeles, California
  3. Detroit, Michigan
  4. Reading, Pennsylvania
  5. Ontario, California
  6. Newark, New Jersey
  7. Phoenix, Arizona
  8. Jersey City, New Jersey
  9. Las Vegas, Nevada
  10. Corona, California

10 least dirty US cities

  1. South Bend, Indiana
  2. Wilmington, North Carolina
  3. Des Moines, Iowa
  4. Davenport, Iowa
  5. Athens, Georgia
  6. Winston-Salem, North Carolina
  7. Fargo, North Dakota
  8. Frederick, Maryland
  9. Pleasanton, California
  10. Lynchburg, Virginia

While measures such as air and water quality remain much out of residents’ hands, there’s one dirty deed for which they can claim responsibility: littering.

The 2026 Keep America Beautiful National Litter Study estimates that 35 billion pieces of garbage are found outside of trash cans, with cigarette butts making up the largest share of inorganic material found dumped in streets, parks and shores.

Meanwhile, vape litter is skyrocketing, according to the US Public Interest Research Group, with one of the smoking devices discarded every 5.7 seconds.

That’s approximately 500,000 per day.

“Vapes have quietly become one of the most commonly thrown-away items in the country, and most people have no idea how harmful they are once they’re tossed,” said Shane Margereson, a spokesperson for vape retailer Ecigone.

Their toxic and hazardous components — such as lithium battery, plastic, metals and leftover nicotine — make tossing more complicated than most realize, as only 8% of users take the proper steps to dispose of vaping devices.

“Dropping one on the street isn’t just an eyesore; it leaks toxins into the soil and water as it breaks down,” Margereson continued.

“The single biggest mistake is putting a vape in your household trash or your home recycling, and it’s exactly what the Environmental Protection Agency tells you not to do,” Margereson said. “That lithium battery can be crushed in a garbage truck or compactor and start a fire, and it happens at waste facilities far more often than people realize.”

Instead of a standard garbage bin, vaping devices should be collected and brought to a hazardous waste drop-off point or collection event. And, despite their plastic parts, they’re absolutely not recyclable.

Heroic Escape: Local Dog’s Daring Getaway from House Fire Captivates Community

TYBEE ISLAND, Ga. — In a remarkable turn of events, a dog named Walker, who had been missing after a house fire on Tybee Island, has been safely captured, according to a local volunteer group. The announcement came on a hopeful Friday, nearly a week after the incident.

The distressing fire, which occurred on Sunday, June 7, resulted in four people being displaced, the tragic loss of one dog, and Walker’s disappearance. Initially spotted on Little Tybee Island last Tuesday morning, Walker eluded capture at that time, leaving many concerned for his safety.

Roommate Incident: Man Arrested for Multiple Stabbing Allegations

An Indiana resident has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term for fatally stabbing his roommate after an argument over sleeping arrangements turned violent.

Draylon Marquise Crutchfield, aged 26, was convicted last month by a jury for the murder of 18-year-old Muhammad A. Williams. The tragic incident took place in July 2025.

On Friday, Allen Superior Court Judge Fran Gull handed down a sentence of 60 years to Crutchfield for the crime.

The altercation unfolded last summer at an apartment complex located on Stardale Drive in Fort Wayne’s Oakland Park neighborhood, according to a press release from the city.

When officers responded to the scene, they discovered Williams with multiple stab wounds, as reported by the Fort Wayne Police Department. Despite being rushed to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries, Williams tragically did not survive.

Witnesses at the scene of the crime told investigators the two men had been arguing about sleeping arrangements before their altercation turned physical. Crutchfield, for his part, did not dispute that narrative – but insisted Williams attacked him first.

“Don’t be going to sleep on my mama’s couch,” Williams told the defendant sometime after 9 p.m., Crutchfield told police, according to a probable cause affidavit obtained by Fort Wayne-based ABC, NBC, and MyNetworkTV affiliate WPTA and CBS affiliate WANE. Then, Williams threatened to beat his soon-to-be killer up, Crutchfield said.

Crutchfield allegedly said he declined to respond to Williams’ initial demand about where to sleep – but that the other man kept up the verbal barrage and would not listen to him.

During the argument, Williams had an infant in his hands, which he later passed on to another person as the confrontation developed, both Crutchfield and witnesses allegedly attested.

A third person in the apartment at some point went outside to make a phone call, the defendant allegedly told police. And then, Williams’ words are said to have become increasingly aggressive.

“I finna beat the s– out of you man,” Williams allegedly told Crutchfield, according to the affidavit. “I’ve been waiting on this s–.”

At this point, Crutchfield told police he was already holding a knife when he warned: “Don’t run up on me bro, don’t run up on me man.”

The defendant claimed Williams then threw the first punch. A witness told police, “The fight did not last longer than three seconds before Draylon had stabbed Muhammad,” according to the affidavit.

Crutchfield eventually told police Williams repeatedly punched him in the head before he admittedly stabbed the deceased man an “unknown number of times,” according to the charging document. The defendant also claimed his vision had gone blurry from being hit in the head – leading to imprecise knowledge about the stabbing.

After the stabbing, Williams ran outside and Crutchfield followed – knife still in hand, according to the affidavit. At a neighbor’s apartment unit, the defendant told his side of the story.

Crutchfield, covered in blood, was armed with a kitchen knife in his right hand and told the neighbors he stabbed Williams after being punched in the face, according to law enforcement.

Revitalize Your Posture in Just 6 Minutes: A Morning Routine That Outperforms the Gym for Those Over 60

0

As we age, maintaining total-body strength becomes a priority for many, particularly those over 50 who often find themselves unsure about how to rebuild their strength safely. Having worked as a personal trainer for nearly four decades and spent the last 20 years training future fitness professionals at TRAINFITNESS, the UK’s premier provider of personal training courses, I frequently encounter this concern.

Fortunately, regaining strength doesn’t necessarily require a gym membership, barbells, or any specialized equipment. A simple routine, performed for ten minutes each day in the comfort of your own living room, can yield impressive results. Incorporating five standing exercises can significantly improve the strength and posture you’ve been missing.

One common issue that arises as we age is gradual muscle loss, which often goes unnoticed until everyday tasks become challenging, such as rising from a low chair or carrying groceries to the front door. However, with a consistent routine, it’s possible to counteract these effects and regain the strength and stability that enhance daily living.

The good news is that you don’t need a gym, a barbell, or a single piece of equipment. Ten minutes a day, on your feet, in your own front room, can deliver more than most people imagine. These five standing moves can rebuild the strength and posture you’ve been missing.

Why Strength Slips After 50

Woman holding her waist, image of lower back pain
Shutterstock

There are a few challenges that come up time and again. The first is muscle loss that has been slowly happening for years without any warning. Most people don’t notice until they struggle to get out of a low chair or carry shopping up to the front door.

The second is joint sensitivity. The knees, hips, and lower back don’t tolerate what they used to, so people get scared off the moment something twinges.

The third is intimidation. A gym full of younger people slinging weights around is not a welcoming sight when you haven’t trained in twenty years.

And the fourth, which I see most often, is that movement patterns have got sloppy. Years of avoiding the bits that feel hard means people have got very good at compensating, which then causes the joint pain that puts them off training in the first place. All of this is fixable, but it has to be approached in the right order.

Why This Beats CrossFit

CrossFit can build strength in older adults; I have no quarrel with that. But the risk-to-reward sum changes after 50. Olympic lifts, box jumps, and high-intensity barbell work demand near-perfect technique, fresh joints, and a body that’s been training for a while. Most people picking it up after 50 are working from a deficit on all three counts.

A standing bodyweight routine trains the muscles that matter most in daily life, the legs, the glutes, the back and the postural muscles, without subjecting the joints to landing forces or overhead loading. It can be done every day if you want to, which means the total weekly volume often beats two or three CrossFit sessions a week once you factor in the days lost to soreness.

And because there’s no kit and no driving to a class, it actually happens, which is the single biggest factor in any training program working.

Bodyweight Squat

The legs are where strength loss hits hardest after 50, and the squat trains the pattern of getting out of a chair, which is the marker most physios use to predict whether someone will stay independent.

Muscles Trained: Quadriceps, glutes, hamstrings, midsection

How to Do It:

  • Stand with feet roughly hip-width apart, toes pointing slightly outwards.
  • Place a sturdy chair behind you as a safety net.
  • Push the hips back as if you’re about to sit down, bending the knees and lowering until your bottom lightly touches the chair.
  • Keep the chest up and the weight through the middle of the foot.
  • Push back up to standing through the heels.
  • Aim for 12 to 15 repetitions within 2 minutes, resting as needed.

Avoid These Mistakes:

  • Don’t let your knees collapse inwards.
  • Don’t let your heels lift off the floor.
  • Don’t round your lower back at the bottom of the movement.

Reverse Lunge

This move builds the glutes, quads, and hamstrings, plus a lot of balance work. After 50, one-legged strength is what keeps you on your feet when you stumble.

Muscles Trained: Glutes, quads, hamstrings, balance

How to Do It:

  • Stand tall with feet hip-width apart, hand resting on the back of a chair if you need it.
  • Step one foot back roughly two foot lengths.
  • Lower the back knee towards the floor until the front thigh is roughly parallel to the floor.
  • Push through the front heel to return to standing.
  • Alternate legs, aiming for 6 to 8 repetitions per side.

Avoid These Mistakes:

  • Don’t step back too short, which forces the front knee out over the toes.
  • Don’t let your torso fall forward.
  • Don’t slam the back knee into the floor.

Wall Press Up

The upper body tends to be the most neglected area in older adults, and this is the gentlest way back in.

Muscles Trained: Chest, shoulders, triceps, deep stabilizers of the trunk

How to Do It:

  • Stand facing a wall, two to three feet away, with palms on the wall at shoulder height and shoulder-width apart.
  • Keep the body in a straight line from heels to head.
  • Bend the elbows and lower the chest towards the wall.
  • Push back to the start position.
  • Aim for 10 to 15 repetitions, working slowly.

Avoid These Mistakes:

  • Don’t let your hips sag.
  • Don’t lift your head to look up, which jams the neck.
  • Don’t set your hands too high, which loads the shoulders awkwardly.

Doorway Row

The pulling muscles undo the slump from years of sitting and are the antidote to the rounded shoulders most people over 50 carry around.

Muscles Trained: Upper back, biceps, rear shoulders

How to Do It:

  • Stand facing a sturdy door frame, feet either side of the threshold.
  • Hold the frame at roughly chest height with both hands.
  • Lean back, keeping the body straight, until your arms are extended, and you feel your weight in your hands.
  • Pull your chest towards the frame, leading with the elbows back and down, squeezing the shoulder blades together.
  • Lower under control.
  • Aim for 10 to 12 repetitions.

Avoid These Mistakes:

  • Don’t shrug your shoulders up towards your ears.
  • Don’t let your hips sag forwards.
  • Don’t use a flimsy door that creaks under load. Test it first.

Calf Raise With Knee Lift

Strong calves are what keep you walking confidently, and the knee lift trains the muscles that pull the foot up to clear a curb or a step. You’ll also get a lot of balance and ankle stability work.

Muscles Trained: Calves, front of the hip on the lifting leg, balance, ankle stability

How to Do It:

  • Stand tall behind a chair, hand resting on it for balance.
  • Rise up onto the balls of both feet.
  • Lower under control.
  • On the next repetition, as you rise, lift one knee up to roughly hip height.
  • Lower the foot, then rise again and lift the other knee.
  • Continue alternating for 2 minutes, working at a comfortable pace.

Avoid These Mistakes:

  • Don’t bounce through the calf raise. Control it instead.
  • Don’t hunch forwards as the knee lifts up.
  • Don’t grip the chair so hard you’re holding yourself up rather than balancing.

How to Modify Each Move

Knee issues: Reduce the depth of the squat and lunge and use a higher chair for the squat. If lunges are off the table, swap them for a step-up onto a low step of about 4 to 6 inches, holding a wall or banister for balance. Avoid going below 90 degrees at the knee until things settle.

Hip issues: Shorten the lunge step and slow the tempo. The squat is usually well tolerated as long as you keep the depth above the point where the pelvis tucks under, which can pinch the hip.

Back issues: For the squat, focus on keeping a long neutral spine and reduce the depth. Swap the doorway row for a wall row, where you stand much closer to the wall, which loads the back less. Avoid the press-up if it makes you arch through the lower back.

To make it easier: Do fewer repetitions, take longer rests, use the chair more, or do wall squats with the back against a wall, sliding down to a 45-degree angle and holding for 15 seconds.

To make it harder: Slow each repetition down. A 3-second descent and a 1-second push back up doubles the work without adding any weight. You can also progress the press-up by walking the feet further back from the wall, then onto a kitchen counter, then a sturdy chair, then the floor.

How Often to Do It and What to Expect

Five days a week is the realistic minimum to see change quickly. Daily is fine and won’t overload most people because the loading is low. Take two days off if you feel beaten up, but the soreness that comes from this kind of routine settles within a week or two as the body adapts.

Results come quickly. You’ll feel stronger getting out of chairs by the end of the first fortnight. By 4 to 6 weeks, carrying shopping, climbing stairs and getting up off the floor all feel meaningfully easier. By 12 weeks, family members tend to comment that you look stronger and stand taller.

The improvement in balance, which is harder to notice consciously, is often the bit that matters most. People who do this routine consistently tend not to have the falls that bring everything else to a halt, and that on its own is worth the ten minutes a day.

Spencer Pratt’s Business Set Ablaze: Political Sabotage or Rivalry Gone Too Far?

Spencer Pratt is pointing fingers at his political adversaries, accusing them of being behind a devastating fire that engulfed his crystal business in California.

The blaze ignited at Pratt’s office in the Pacific Palisades on Thursday afternoon, according to a report by the California Post.

Firefighters from several units of the Los Angeles Fire Department quickly responded to the scene, located in the Highlands Circle complex on Palisades Drive, to extinguish the fire.

Thankfully, no injuries were reported, but the fire’s origin is still being investigated.

Pratt, who was recently ousted from the Los Angeles mayoral race, described the incident as ‘very suspicious.’

He told the Post that he thinks it was started because of ‘contentious election tomfoolery.’

‘I want to be careful not to compromise an arson investigation, but this incident is very suspicious.

‘I will wait for investigators to make public the details, but this was no accident and the timing of this on the heels of all of the contentious election tomfoolery in the last two weeks, it is very suspect, indeed,’ the former reality TV star said.

The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) confirmed that its arson department was notified of the blaze.

The inferno took place in the same building that formerly housed Cosa Nostra, a popular local restaurant that was damaged by last year’s destructive Palisades Fire.

At the time of the incident, the business was undergoing renovations, according to the Post.

Pratt went on to thank the LAFD for their fast response and hard work putting out the flames.

He continued: ‘There are many unscrupulous people in this city who will stop at nothing to silence people who expose the corruption that has overrun our city.

‘This fire is no accident, and it would not surprise me if the least if [sic] this were a reprisal for my work in opposing Karen Bass and Nithya Raman, and having the audacity as a civilian to try and do my civic duty and improve our broken city.’

The blaze occurred just hours before Pratt dropped a scathing video on X, pledging to go to ‘war’ with the remaining LA mayoral candidates, incumbent Karen Bass and progressive Nithya Raman.

In the dramatic clip, Pratt claimed he had obtained a secret recording of the Los Angeles mayoral hopefuls that would force them to ‘resign’ if released.

The crystal shop sells hand-cut gems, which Pratt became interested in after his pop star wife, Heidi Montag, ‘underwent a series of surgeries’ that left her in severe pain, according to the company’s website.

In an effort to help nurse his wife back to health, Pratt started to look into alternative healing methods, including Sugilite, a ‘rare purple mineral that emanates peace and beauty,’ the site reads.

The Daily Mail contacted the LAFD, Pratt, Bass and Raman for comment.
