Better late than never — even when “late” means more than a century.

An 84-year-old man has returned a magazine to his New Hampshire library more than 130 years after it was checked out. Because late fees had been frozen, John Hanson avoided what would otherwise have been a staggering $12,055 bill.

The missing item was the September 1894 edition of The Century Illustrated Monthly Magazine. Somehow, it came into Hanson’s possession and remained at his Barrington home for decades, according to a social media post from the Concord Public Library earlier this month.

Hanson decided it was finally time to return the periodical after reading a Concord Monitor article about the library’s decision to freeze fines.

“Yeah, when I saw that, I said to myself, ‘Boy, this would be a good time to bring it back,’” Hanson told NBC News.

The century-old magazine will not go back into circulation. Still, the library’s fine freeze saved Hanson from a $12,055 penalty for returning it 48,220 days overdue.

“We’ve witnessed many happy faces since announcing our fine freeze! Of course, we expected long overdue books to be returned, but certainly not something from the late 19th century!” the Concord Public Library wrote.

Cindy Crawford had called her son Presley Gerber a “warrior” just months before his death at 27 on Sunday.

The 60-year-old supermodel, her 25-year-old daughter Kaia and husband Rande Gerber, 64, stood by Presley in March after he shared an Instagram post about undergoing ibogaine treatment in Mexico.

Ibogaine is a naturally occurring psychoactive compound sourced from an African shrub. It has been reported to ease withdrawal symptoms and help reset neural pathways.

Following Presley’s post, his family offered messages of encouragement. Crawford wrote, “You are a warrior! Walked thru the fire to find yourself! So proud!”

Kaia echoed that support, writing, “That’s my brother. I am so damn proud.”

Rande also praised his son’s determination, saying, “I’m so proud of you and your courage. Facing what’s hard takes real strength and watching you find your way back to yourself is everything. I love you so much.”

In the post’s caption, Presley described the moments before receiving the treatment: “Pre Ibogaine Flood Dose – quiet moment before everything changed. i was absolutely terrified, and I knew I would be again if I ever had to face something like this (helps to not go into the situations you do that get ya there but that’s life sometimes.)”

He continued: “my mantras were love yourself and lis gotta be the last time for this reason. letting go of control didn’t come easy, but I trusted there was something bigger than me guiding it. I knew why i was there. I faced what I had been running from, and somewhere in all of it, i started finding my way back to myself…. We shall see…. Praying it’s the last time I have to come back.”

Presley added: “Next time I’d like to choose. And absolutely can’t forget the incredible caring kind and on their sh*t team. Helps a lot haha. And I made some dope ass friends there #iboga #ibogaine #rewireyourbrain #loveyourself #mentalhealth.”

The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner confirmed that Presley died Sunday at a rehabilitation facility, according to TMZ. Authorities have not disclosed his cause of death.

In an interview with Vogue last month, Kaia spoke about the effect of Presley’s substance use and mental health challenges on their family.

“When something like that happens in a family, it kind of levels everyone,” she told the magazine.

As the family mourns Presley’s unexpected death, a representative for Crawford told the Daily Mail, “The family is asking for privacy during this very difficult and painful time.”

Presley entered the modeling industry at 15 and later appeared in campaigns for brands including Dolce & Gabbana and Calvin Klein.

He had reportedly experienced mental health difficulties from a young age and was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence in 2019.

Last November, Presley revealed he was retreating from social media to ‘take care of my own mental health for a bit.’

One month later, he opened up about his personal life in a candid video shared online, listing medications he was taking for ‘night terrors’ and ‘panic attacks.’

‘I feel like honesty is the best policy,’ he began before sharing that he was on 1mg of Buprenorphine – used to treat both pain and opioid use disorders – twice a day.

Presley also shared that the ‘benzos have been fluctuating up and down depending on what’s been going on in my life.’

Benzodiazepines help ‘slow down activity in your brain and nervous system’ to treat ‘anxiety and related mental health conditions,’ per Cleveland Clinic.

‘Unfortunately, I’ve had a lot of loss in many different forms recently, so that is not an excuse, but it’s the reason why I am where I’m at now,’ he shared.

He did not go into detail about the ‘loss’ he referenced, but went on to explain that he also took a dose of Xanax at night or when his ‘panic attacks are really, really bad.’

The model then listed Valium, admitting that he didn’t know exactly how much he’d been taking as he said, ‘Who f***ing knows anymore.’

He noted in the Instagram reel that ‘doctors say a lot of different things so it’s kind of scary. But hopefully between my research and their research and the world and God, we can finally figure this out.’

Presley also talked about the lack of ‘direction’ he had from doctors when it came to his medication.

‘I’d like doctors to be like, “Take this three times a day.” But every psychiatrist I’ve had – and I’ve had 15 – are like, “Here’s 20 medications and take this if you feel like this, take this as needed.”

‘And I’m like, “No, don’t give me that much leeway.” I need some direction,’ he continued.

Kaia told Vogue her brother’s troubles made her want to be the ‘easy’ child.

She explained, ‘I think that’s also why I started to self-​identify as the easy one and never wanted to ask for help. Because it felt like too much to have two children who were needing.’

She told the magazine that witnessing her brother’s honesty was ‘refreshing.’

‘My parents for most of our lives were very, very private and didn’t share anything – and now we have this absolute teacher, my brother, who says, “I’m gonna be very human for everyone.” There’s only so much you can hide from the world,’ she said.

‘And trying to put a lid on something just makes the person feel like you’re ashamed of them,’ she noted.

This past May, Presley expressed gratitude for his father in a heartfelt Instagram post.

He posted a photo of them paddle boarding and wrote, ‘I have the best father in the world. He’s never given up on me. He’s always there for me. Always has the best advice for me. I appreciate this man more than words can explain. I love you pops. To more paddle boarding days around the world.’

Cindy showed her support in the comments, writing, ‘My boys!’ and the father of two wrote, ‘I am honored [to] take this ride called life with you over and over any time. Sometimes we may fall but with a little help always get back up. I love you forever Prez.’

California authorities are conducting a search for a man they describe as armed and dangerous after a woman was allegedly killed and gunfire was directed at other people, officials said.

The Placer County Sheriff’s Office identified the suspect as 44-year-old Derek Spencer, who is wanted on multiple felony charges. Investigators say Spencer allegedly pointed a gun at people in Placer County earlier Sunday.

Deputies later located Spencer in the Iowa Hill area while responding to the initial reports. Authorities said he rammed a patrol vehicle and escaped, prompting a large-scale manhunt.

Officials said Spencer opened fire toward law enforcement officers and helicopters involved in the operation. No officers were hurt during the search.

Residents in and around Iowa Hill have been instructed to secure their homes, lock their doors and stay indoors.

In a Sunday evening update, the sheriff’s office said the search was still underway. Authorities noted that the operation has been complicated by the area’s vast size, thick forests and steep, rugged landscape.

As deputies continued looking for Spencer, they discovered a woman’s body and said they believe he was responsible for her death.

“While tactical teams were clearing a residence where Spencer had been earlier, they found an adult woman who had been shot and killed inside,” deputies said. “Based on the investigation so far, Spencer is believed to have killed her before escaping into the nearby forest.”

Several other law enforcement agencies are assisting the Placer County Sheriff’s Office with the ongoing operation.

“Teams will continue searching through the night and will not let up until we locate this armed and extremely dangerous individual,” the sheriff’s office said.

The sheriff’s office said Spencer is bald and has a goatee.

Troy Jackson, the Democratic Senate candidate in Maine, is working to distance himself from the far-left label, rejecting the socialist description despite past support from controversial streamer Hasan Piker and the Maine chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America.

“I don’t really consider myself anything. I’m upset a lot at the Democratic Party. What I know is I fight for working-class people,” Jackson told CNN’s Manu Raju when asked whether he considers himself a socialist.

Jackson swiftly became the grassroots movement’s preferred choice to replace scandal-plagued oyster farmer Graham Platner, who ended his campaign after being accused of rape, an allegation he denied.

Progressive activists inferred that Jackson shared many of Platner’s views. The two men had campaigned together repeatedly, and Jackson served as president of the Maine Senate from 2018 to 2024.

“[I]f the dem establishment think [sic] that they can risk the senate majority by not replacing platner with an acceptable substitute – we will be risking a loss to susan collins,” Piker wrote on X as Democrats scrambled to find a replacement for Platner. “[T]roy jackson is him!”

Piker, who drew widespread criticism after saying in 2019 that “America deserved 9/11” — comments he later said he regretted because they supplied ammunition to conservative opponents — has become a liability for Democrats in the political arena.

Piker’s association with Dr. Abdul El-Sayed has further complicated Democratic efforts to retain Michigan’s Senate seat, while giving Republicans an opening for attacks that have prompted other Democrats to keep their distance.

“No, I honestly had never. I actually didn’t know a lot about him either,” Jackson said earlier this month on Crooked Media’s “What a Day” podcast when asked about Piker.

Jackson also received the Maine DSA’s endorsement during his campaign for governor — an endorsement he highlighted proudly on social media in May.

“To the loggers, farmers, teachers, truck drivers, nurses, postal workers, shipbuilders, childcare providers, and everyone else who makes this state run while getting run down in the process: let’s take back what’s ours,” he wrote on X at the time.

Jackson finished third in Maine’s Democratic gubernatorial primary. His allies now emphasize that the Maine DSA has not endorsed anyone in the Senate contest.

The national DSA has effectively advocated abolishing the executive branch and the Senate, while also calling for a Supreme Court subordinate to Congress.

“No,” Jackson told MS NOW’s “Morning Joe” when asked whether he supports the national DSA platform. “But, I mean, what I do support is a government that works for everyday people.”

Jackson’s appeal among progressive grassroots voters is partly rooted in his role leading Sen. Bernie Sanders’ 2016 presidential campaign operations in Maine.

Sanders later returned the favor, endorsing Jackson during his gubernatorial campaign and again in the current Senate race.

Jackson holds a 1.8 percentage-point lead over Republican incumbent Sen. Susan Collins, according to the latest RealClearPolitics polling average. Collins, however, has a record of significantly outperforming polling projections.

Fewer than 24 hours later, Kelce was back to work, arriving at Arrowhead Stadium in a striking outfit.

The veteran athlete, who has flirted with retirement in recent seasons, wore a Louis Vuitton jacket featuring a black-and-blue pattern and an “LV” logo across the chest.

Earlier this week, Kelce was named as one of the victims in a huge Ponzi scheme that saw a man scam more than $35 million from oblivious investors.

He was named in federal court on Tuesday as one of the people who lost money in the scheme, which has led to Siddharth Jawahar being sentenced to 11 years in prison.

As revealed in a press release by the US Attorney’s office, Jawahar – an illegal immigrant – ran Swiftarc Capital LLC and was found to have funneled nearly all of his clients’ money into one investment: Philip Morris Pakistan.

Federal prosecutors claim that when that investment didn’t work out, Jawahar lied to Kelce and the other victims about how their money was performing, while also using new investor cash to pay earlier clients in a massive Ponzi scheme.

What’s more, the court heard that Jawahar, 38, used Kelce’s cash to live the high life, only investing around $10 million of the $35 million he was given by the various investors, and splashing out on private jets, luxury hotel rooms and restaurants.

It has not yet been revealed exactly how much Kelce lost in the scam, and prosecutors made clear that he is a victim and not accused of any wrongdoing.
