Empowering Voices: Savannah Unites in a Bold Stand for Voter Rights

SAVANNAH, Ga. — On Saturday, voting rights advocates raised their voices in protest against the United States Supreme Court’s recent decision on racial gerrymandering, specifically addressing the implications for Section Two of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

In a coordinated effort, Coastal Georgia Partners—a coalition of local, non-partisan organizations focused on voting rights—gathered to emphasize the importance of using the power of the vote.

This event was part of a broader national initiative called “All Roads Lead to the South,” where the group expressed its disapproval of the Supreme Court’s ruling that criticized Louisiana’s congressional map for its excessive reliance on racial considerations.

Chassidy Malloy, president of the League of Women Voters Coastal Georgia, voiced concerns during the rally, stating, “This recent decision will make it more challenging for Black Georgians to have their voices truly heard at the ballot box.”

The controversy arose after Louisiana’s congressional boundaries were redrawn in 2024 to include a second majority-Black district, a move the Supreme Court now deems unconstitutional.

Protestors said the decision goes against the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

Mayor Van Johnson spoke at today’s event, saying, “The Voting Rights Act came about, which essentially said, “We want to make sure that those that are represented have the opportunity to pick who represents them,’ not that the representatives get to pick the people who are elected.”

After this ruling in Louisiana, South Carolina leaders held a session considering redistricting.

“In all of my almost five decades, I never saw where we were redistricting in the middle of a ten-year cycle,” said Johnson. “Yet now we’re seeing South Carolina, ‘we’ll do it’ and Georgia, ‘we’re not going to do it,’ but guess what, they’re going to do it.”

While the initial redistricting attempt failed in South Carolina, spoke to people at the event who said they are afraid of Georgia’s leaders trying.

Coco Papy with Coastal Georgia Partners said, “I don’t want people to look at this as a Republican issue or a Democrat issue. It is not. Gerrymandering hurts everyone. It makes it so that races are not fair. It makes it so that people are not truly represented, and it impacts everyone.”

Many said they won’t stand for it or go back in history to a time before the Voting Rights Act.

“We have to fight in order to keep what our forefathers fought for,” said Jerome Irwin, Sr. with Savannah Building Futures. “People who have bled and died to try to get the right to vote and get these districts to where it is.  And if we don’t stand here and fight for it, it’s no use doing anything…even living.”

The protestors’ said their ultimate goal is getting everyone to the polls on Tuesday.

“When we have the people, we want to be elected to the office, we can demand them,” said Papy. “Hey, I need you to represent me better on this, right? I don’t like that you did this or I did like that you did this. Please do more of this. So, I want people to remember that.”

Ebola Outbreak Declared Public Health Emergency in Central Africa: Urgent Response Needed After 80 Suspected Deaths

0

The World Health Organization (WHO) has officially labeled the Ebola outbreak in Central Africa as an international public health emergency. This announcement was made on Sunday following reports of numerous alleged fatalities in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda.

The WHO clarified that the outbreak, attributed to the Bundibugyo virus, does not fulfill the conditions necessary to be considered a pandemic emergency.

As of Saturday, there have been reports of 80 potential deaths, eight cases confirmed through laboratory testing, and 246 suspected cases. These incidents span at least three health zones in the Democratic Republic of Congo, including Bunia, Rwampara, and Mongbwalu.

This situation unfolds as global health authorities are also keeping a close watch on an unusual hantavirus outbreak linked to the MV Hondius cruise ship. The outbreak has resulted in illness among multiple passengers and crew members, leading to three fatalities.

As of May 13, the WHO said 11 hantavirus cases had been identified in connection with the cruise outbreak, including eight confirmed cases, two probable cases and one inconclusive case.

In neighboring Uganda’s capital, Kampala, the WHO said two apparently unrelated laboratory-confirmed Ebola cases — including one death — were reported Friday and Saturday involving people who had traveled from the DRC.

Another laboratory-confirmed case was reported in the DRC capital of Kinshasa involving a person returning from Ituri province.

Initial tests suggested the outbreak does not involve the Ebola Zaire strain, which caused Congo’s devastating 2018–2020 epidemic that killed more than 1,000 people.

However, unlike Ebola-Zaire strains, there are currently no approved vaccines or therapeutics for the Bundibugyo strain, which the WHO described as making the outbreak “extraordinary.”

The WHO warned the outbreak could be larger than currently reported due to the high positivity rate among initial samples and the growing number of suspected cases.

The outbreak also poses a public health risk to other countries, the WHO said, urging nations to activate emergency-management systems and implement cross-border screening measures.

Ebola is a highly contagious and often fatal disease spread through bodily fluids, including blood, vomit and semen. Symptoms can include fever, vomiting, diarrhea, muscle pain and internal bleeding.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus recently said Congo has a “strong track record” responding to Ebola outbreaks while announcing the release of $500,000 in emergency funding to support containment efforts.

The WHO said it will convene an emergency committee to review recommendations for how affected countries should respond.

The organization did not recommend border closures or travel restrictions.

Congo has now recorded 17 Ebola outbreaks since the virus was first identified in the country in 1976.

Desperate Bid for Homeownership: Man Assaults Real Estate Agent in Unprecedented Attack

Inset: Keith Rowe (Grayson County Detention Center). Background: The lake near where Rowe violently attacked a real estate agent in Falls of Rough, Ky. (Google Maps).

A Kentucky man has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term following an attack on a real estate agent during a home showing last summer.

Keith Rowe, aged 71, entered a guilty plea on Friday to several charges, including robbery, unlawful imprisonment, terroristic threatening, and assault.

In a swift judicial decision, Rowe received a 15-year prison sentence. Upon his release, he will also face five years of probation and six months of home confinement.

The incident unfolded on June 18, 2025, at a lake house in Falls of Rough, an area located approximately 95 miles southwest of Louisville.

During the property viewing, Rowe violently assaulted the elderly real estate agent, confined him inside the home, and demanded that the agent draft and sign over the property contract to him. He further threatened the agent’s life if he did not comply, according to a statement from the Grayson County Sheriff’s Office reported by Louisville’s ABC affiliate WHAS at the time.

Rowe told the victim that the contract for the house, which was going for $225,000, was for his niece, according to court documents obtained by Louisville-based Fox affiliate WDRB.

Next, the defendant demanded that the victim hand over his phone or he would “beat his brains in,” authorities said.

Though the victim gave up his phone, he told Rowe he could not write up a contract without his computer – which was in his own home across the street. After that, Rowe demanded the pair cross the street together – warning the victim against getting into his car.

The defendant said that should the victim try to escape, he would “tie a rope around his neck and drag him with his 4-wheeler.” Rowe then pointed to a rope attached to the 4-wheeler he drove to the showing.

Rowe and the real estate agent made it into the second home, where the victim began typing on his computer. While the victim typed, the defendant pulled out a pocketknife and said he was going to kill the victim once the contract had been completed.

Finally, the real estate agent finished the contract and handed it to the defendant, who sat down to read the document at the kitchen table. The victim took this opportunity to stand up and make his way toward a foyer to the kitchen and then the front door.

Law enforcement said the real estate agent seriously feared for his life – believing that if he stayed in the house any longer, he would have been killed. Upon leaving the house, the victim raced to his car and drove directly to the sheriff’s office, covered in blood and bruises.

The defendant, for his part, was located by family later that same evening and eventually turned himself in. Rowe largely agreed with the sequence of events described by the real estate agent, authorities said.

Now, he’s persona non grata in the jurisdiction where the attack occurred.

“Rowe is not to step foot in Grayson County and have no contact or communication with the victim in this case unless it is ordered by the court,” Grayson County Sheriff Norman Chaffins said.

Revealed: Doris Day’s Off-Camera Persona Unmasked – The ’60s Star’s Candid Confession

We may earn a commission on purchases made through links in this article.

Doris Day, long celebrated for her wholesome image and upbeat persona, took a firm stand against these perceptions, dismissing them as “make-believe” in her autobiography, “Doris Day: Her Own Story.”

In her initial conversation with A. E. Hotchner, the author of the 1976 book, Day candidly shared that her mother had advised against revealing her life’s story. “She said, ‘Your life just hasn’t been that happy that you can do a book. You know the image people have of you, but the truth is — all the terrible things that have happened to you, and all the times you’ve suffered, well, my goodness, when you think of all the unhappiness you’ve had — what’s there to write about?'” Day recalled (via Internet Archive). This frank introduction set the tone, prompting Hotchner to question why she would want to share her story given its challenges. Day replied, “I’m tired of being thought of as Miss Goody Two-shoes, that’s why. … I’m not the All-American Virgin Queen, and I’d like to deal with the true, honest story of who I really am.”

Day expressed her disdain for the concept of “image,” suggesting it had contributed to a misleading public perception of her. She boldly declared, “This image I’ve got … It has nothing to do with the life I’ve had.” Her openness was refreshing and earned her admiration for her honesty.

So, if Doris Day was unlike her public persona, what was she truly like? Despite her reputation for being perpetually cheerful, she was often perceived as such without effort. Hotchner himself noted their first encounter, saying, “Doris Day arrived 15 minutes late on a chariot of sunshine.” Yet, as Day emphasized, this was not a deliberate act on her part.

Doris Day faced many misfortunes

So, if Doris Day was one of those celebs who are nothing like they seem, what was she like in real life? Certainly, it seems she did come across as peppy in many scenarios. Even A. E. Hotchner wrote of their first meeting, “Doris Day arrived 15 minutes late on a chariot of sunshine.” However, Day pointed out that she wasn’t trying to.

“There must be something about me, about whatever it is that I give off, that accounts for this disparity between who I am and who I appear to be,” she mused, noting that it confused her nonetheless. After all, she pointed out, “At ten years of age I discovered that my father was having an affair with the mother of my best friend. Divorce followed.” She also recounted the serious accident she thankfully survived, saying, “At thirteen, I was in an auto that was hit by a train, and that abruptly ended my promising career as a dancer.” That wasn’t all, though. Day added, “I was married at seventeen to a psychopathic sadist.” She’d later marry another mean man, Martin Melcher, who squandered her fortune and put her into debt. All in all, there were a ton of reasons why Day shouldn’t be seen as the poster child of happiness, but after listing her misfortunes, she quipped, “Yes, sir, America’s la-di-da happy virgin!”

Day would muse on her reputation as Hollywood’s most happy-go-lucky star once again in a 1989 BBC interview. “I’m not Miss Goody Two-shoes! I don’t know where that — from where it came. I really don’t. I think it’s rather silly, because I’m not at all, and I’ve played all kinds of roles,” she said (via Culture Vulture Rises). Well, whether or not the public believed it, no one could ever accuse Day of trying to put on a front.

Skyrocketing Electric Bills: How States Are Targeting Utility Companies’ Surging Profits

0

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — As the artificial intelligence sector experiences rapid growth, several states are witnessing disputes over the increasing profits of utility companies. Governors, attorneys general, and concerned parties argue that financially strained residents are being unfairly burdened by higher electricity costs, highlighting a flawed system.

In response, officials and legislators in at least six states—Arizona, Indiana, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania—are actively working to thwart proposed utility rate hikes. Some are advocating for a complete overhaul of the financing model utilities use for significant system enhancements.

This movement coincides with a midterm election year, where Democrats are emphasizing affordability as a key issue in their efforts to challenge the Republican stronghold in Washington.

Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes, a Democrat campaigning for reelection, is contesting two proposed utility rate increases before the state’s utility regulatory commission.

“Now more than ever, it is crucial to oppose the blatant corporate greed exhibited by Arizona’s monopoly utilities,” Mayes stated in a recent interview.

The fights are getting noticed on Wall Street

The voracious energy demands of AI data centers have driven up electric prices in some regions and launched a moneymaking energy-sector construction boom.

For years, consumer advocates have tried to challenge the size of a utility’s investment return in front of regulators. But maybe not like this, consumer advocates say.

“We’ve entered into this era of expensive energy and (demand) growth, and we’re seeing utility profits at record highs and rising utility bills,” said Matt Kasper of the Energy and Policy Institute, which pushes utilities to keep rates low and use renewable energy sources.

Utilities were long viewed as a stable haven for investors, with a reliable source of income and predictable demand. Because of that lower risk, the utility’s sector investment returns are typically on the low end compared to other sectors, analysts say.

However, utilities — many of which are owned by multibillion-dollar, for-profit parent companies — have seen share prices perform particularly well during the data center expansion.

The investment returns that utilities get from regulators aren’t the sole reason consumers’ bills are rising, but researchers suggest they are a contributing factor. In March, the Energy and Policy Institute issued a report that said the profits of 110 for-profit utilities rose from just under $39 billion in 2021 to over $52 billion in 2024.

Mark Ellis, a former utility executive-turned-consumer advocate, said about 10% of the typical customer bill is what he called a for-profit utility’s “excess profit,” above what might be considered reasonable under long-standing Supreme Court precedent.

Instead of regulators setting returns above what the market might require, utilities should instead shop for the lowest-cost investor cash, much like someone might shop for the lowest interest rate on a loan, Ellis said.

Paul Ferraro, an economics professor at Johns Hopkins University, said that targeting utility investment returns is a political action, not an economic action.

“That’s an action that’s aiming to address the deep social disagreements we have about who should benefit from essential infrastructure,” Ferraro said. “But it’s not going to address the key challenges that the electricity sector is facing.”

That includes investment in modernization, expansion, renewable energies and distributed sources of power, Ferraro said.

‘Affordability’ has reached corporate earnings calls

Travis Miller, an energy and utilities analyst for Morningstar, said utility executives on earnings calls are emphasizing efforts to cut costs or protect residential customers from the cost to supply electricity to data centers.

“Affordability is probably the number one issue that executives and investors are thinking about right now in the utility sector,” Miller said.

If rates aren’t affordable currently, there’s no way that utilities can get the rate increases they need to boost earnings and dividends for investors, Miller said.

Utilities point to federal data showing that home electricity bills as a proportion of household income have fallen in the past couple decades. They defend the investment returns they are granted by state regulators as critical to raising the cash they need to appropriately maintain electric grids and ensure reliability for millions of people.

They also warn that investors will simply send their cash to utilities in other states that promise higher returns.

Critics call that fearmongering.

Earlier this month, the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities launched what its president, Christine Guhl Sadovy, called one of the most consequential regulatory reviews in a generation, to question how utilities “should earn revenue in a modern energy system.”

In recent weeks, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro pressured PECO, the Philadelphia-area utility subsidiary of Exelon Corp., to withdraw a 12.5% rate increase, or $20 per month extra for the average residential customer. Shapiro, a Democrat running for reelection this year, then issued a letter to utility executives, taking a whack at utility profits and saying that the “20th century utility model is broken.”

“We can no longer simply prioritize corporate profitability to drive infrastructure development,” Shapiro wrote.

In a note to investors, one analyst called it “Quaker State Sticker Shock,” and the share prices of companies that own Pennsylvania-based utilities lagged their peers in the following days.

For its part, Exelon — the Chicago-based parent of Commonwealth Edison, PECO, Baltimore Gas and Electric and several other utilities — emphasized that it recognizes the importance of affordability.

Calvin Butler, Exelon’s president and CEO, told analysts on its first-quarter earnings call May 6 that it was committed to justifying what it spends and keeping energy bills as low as possible. Its decision to withdraw its rate increase request came after conversations with “stakeholders” who said, “Hey, if you could partner with us to address the affordability issue and lean in, timing is not the best right now,” Butler said.

In Indiana, Republican Gov. Mike Braun appointed a new slate of utility commissioners with a mission to face down rate increases.

Their first big test is a request by AES Indiana for a 10.1% increase, or $193 million a year more from ratepayers, said Ben Inskeep, program director for the Indianapolis-based consumer advocate Citizens Action Coalition.

As part of it, AES Indiana — whose parent company is being taken private in a $33.4 billion deal led by private investment giant BlackRock — sought a 10.7% return on its cash.

Inskeep said an 8% return — instead of 10.7% — would slash the proposed rate increase nearly in half.

In Arizona, Mayes is challenging a pair of 14% proposed increases that she said could be dramatically reduced if the companies are simply paid the cost to maintain reliable service.

“It’s becoming unbearable for the people in Arizona,” Mayes said. “And I think we have to fight back.”

Gina Carano Reflects on Brief Comeback Fight Against Ronda Rousey

0

In a dramatic yet brief return to the boxing arena, Gina Carano, the boxer-turned-actor, found herself yearning for more than just a fleeting 17-second match. Her comeback bout against Ronda Rousey on Saturday night in Inglewood, California, hardly gave her the time she had hoped for.

“I was so ready, I felt so good,” Carano, now 44, expressed during a post-fight interview inside the ring, as reported by AFP. “I wanted it to last longer. But after being away for 17 years, just stepping into the cage was a victory in itself. Facing a legend was a victory. I feel great, but I wanted to fight, and I didn’t get to do that.”

Both Carano and Rousey had been on lengthy hiatuses from the MMA scene, with Rousey absent for nearly a decade. Yet, they both returned to headline a much-anticipated event broadcast on Netflix.

The fight, however, was brief. Mere moments after the bell, Rousey executed her renowned armbar technique, compelling Carano to tap out and conclude the match. This marked Carano’s first fight since her loss to Cris Cyborg by TKO in August 2009, which had prompted her retirement.

She delivered her signature armbar move, forcing Carano — whose last fight occurred in August 2009, when she lost to Cris Cyborg by TKO and retired — to tap and signal the end of the fight.

“You changed my world and we changed the world,” Rousey told Carano during an interview in the ring following the fight, according to USA Today. “And I will never, ever forget. I will never be able to pay you back enough. But  I’m so glad we got to share this moment.”

Carano shifted into acting following her retirement and launched that portion of her career with a role in “Haywire,” but she was fired from “The Mandalorian” in 2021 following controversial social media posts.

Will Ferrell Channels Jeffrey Epstein’s Ghost in SNL Season Finale Shocker

Saturday Night Live launched its 51st season with a daring cold open, featuring host Will Ferrell portraying the spectral return of Jeffrey Epstein, the notorious figure returning from beyond the grave to haunt Donald Trump.

The sketch started with cast member James Austin Johnson stepping into the role of the former president, sitting in the Oval Office before drifting into a slumber.

Emerging with grey hair and bound in chains, Ferrell took on the guise of the infamous Epstein, making a spectral appearance to surprise his “best friend” with an unexpected visit.

Johnson, mimicking Trump, expressed thrilled astonishment at the sight of Ferrell’s ghostly Epstein but pointed out a dip in his own political fortunes, mentioning his plummeting approval ratings, now in the 30s.

With a sardonic tone, Epstein quipped, “30s? Gross – let me know when it hits 17.”

‘It’s dark, very dark, dark situation. So what are you up to these days, Jeff? How’s heaven?’ the president asked, to which Epstein replied: ‘It’s really, really hot.’

When asked about his summer plans, Johnson’s Trump said he would be at the World Cup, hosting the Patriot Games for American high schoolers and attending a UFC fight on the White House lawn like he’s ‘white trash on Worldstar.’

The president then asked Epstein’s ghost for a high five, which generated the sordid punch line, ‘You know what, this time, I’m going to leave you hanging,’ referencing the financier’s suicide in his jail cell.

Epstein’s ghost then revealed a series of ‘visions’ for the future of the Trump administration, which featured former Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem as a presenter on the Home Shopping Network and Secretary of War Pete Hegseth smoking marijuana on a podcast with FBI Director Kash Patel.

The comedians referenced the Daily Mail’s exclusive on Noem’s husband cross-dressing as a ‘busty bimbo,’ setting up a line about how ‘crazy’ the Trump administration is.

Colin Jost reprised his role as Pete Hegseth, portraying the secretary as a drunken frat boy alongside Aziz Ansari’s incompetent Kash Patel.

Jost’s Hegseth said he was podcasting to promote his new ‘hard water’ product, ‘Poland Sprung.’

Epstein’s ghost had one last fortune to reveal – the US came in second after the war in Iran.

Farrell then issued a blistering message to Trump, telling the president: ‘Donny, just remember: no matter how many wars you start, or how bad you tank the economy as a distraction, people will always associate you with me. And that, my dear friend, is a beautiful thing.’

The two then broke out into song, performing a duet of Bill Withers’ 1981 hit, Just the Two of Us.

The skit left viewers in shock. Some fans found the humor in the dark opening, others claimed it was insensitive to Epstein’s real victims, while MAGA die-hards slammed the show for portraying Trump’s relationship with the infamous pedophile.

‘Nothing funny about Epstein ever,’ one viewer commented.

‘I don’t know how to feel about this opening. I don’t wanna laugh in honor of the victims but also I wanna laugh cuz of Poland Sprung and the fact this will piss off people so much it will remind people to not stop talking about it,’ another added.

‘SO brave… SO creative… SNL running on woke fantasy fumes in their season finale…’ wrote a third.

However, some praised the cold open with one posting on X: ‘Donald Trump and Ghost of Jeffrey Epstein singing “just the two of us” was truly a laugh out loud moment.’

Trump and Epstein frequently crossed paths and reportedly had a close friendship in New York during the 90s and early 2000s.

Trump has appeared thousands of times in the public files related to the Department of Justice’s investigation into Epstein’s sex crimes.

The controversial cold open concluded SNL’s 51st season, which included a slew of skits skewering the Trump administration.

Tensions Rise as Competing Demonstrations Energize City of Millions

A massive police presence has swarmed on the streets of London to ensure that two rival marches, attended by tens of thousands, and the climax of the FA Cup unfolded without major incident.

In a major public order operation, London’s Metropolitan Police deployed a formidable force of at least 4,000 officers, complete with armored vehicles, horses, dogs, drones, and helicopters.

The primary focus of concern was central London, where authorities aimed to prevent any clashes between two large-scale demonstrations.

One of these marches was organized by far-right activist Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, better known as Tommy Robinson.

The other event was the annual Nakba Day demonstration, which marks the 1948 displacement of approximately 700,000 Palestinians following the creation of the state of Israel.

The other was the annual Nakba Day demonstration, which commemorates the 1948 exodus of around 700,000 Palestinians from what is now Israel.

Police remain on guard for any splinter groups coming into contact, and for any trouble following the conclusion of the FA Cup final, which was attended by more than 83,000 fans at Wembley Stadium.

As of this morning, police said 43 people were arrested for a variety of offences. A further 22 were arrested at the FA Cup final, where Manchester City beat Chelsea.

Police said four officers were assaulted, none seriously, while a further six were subjected to hate crime offences.

The marches took place at a particularly radicalised time in British politics, with the extremes on the right and the left advancing across the UK in last week’s elections.

Protesters are driven by a range of grievances. Many are angry about the number of would-be asylum-seekers making the dangerous crossing across the English Channel from the French coast to the UK in small boats.

Others are protesting Israel’s actions in Gaza, which have devastated the Palestinian enclave and, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, killed more than 72,700 people.

Prosecutors have been told to consider whether protest placards, banners and chants viewed on social media may amount to offences of stirring up hatred during the rallies.

“This is not about restricting free speech,” said the Crown Prosecution Service’s director, Stephen Parkinson. “It is about preventing hate crime and protecting the public, particularly at a time of heightened tensions.”

The British government also blocked 11 foreign nationals from entering the country for the “Unite the Kingdom” rally.

Right-wing figures claiming to have been barred include Polish politician Dominik Tarczynski, Belgian politician Filip Dewinter, anti-Islam commentator Valentina Gomez and Dutch activist Eva Vlaardingerbroek.

“We will block those coming into the UK who seek to incite hatred and violence,” said Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who is fighting for his political life following those disastrous election results earlier this month.

“For anyone who sets out to wreak havoc on our streets, to intimidate or threaten anyone, you can expect to face the full force of the law.”

On Friday, Starmer visited the Metropolitan Police command centre to discuss policing arrangements for the rallies alongside Met Commissioner Mark Rowley and London Mayor Sadiq Khan.

Live facial recognition will be used for the first time in a protest policing operation.

Cameras have been set up in the north London neighbourhood of Camden, which is not on the route of the “Unite the Kingdom” march but is expected to be used by many people attending the event.

Carlos Mendoza’s Team Demonstrates Resilience Following Clay Holmes’ Injury Setback

0

Carlos Mendoza has a unique knack for finding the silver lining in even the most unpleasant situations. Known for turning the most dire circumstances into opportunities for optimism, he is a man who faces adversity with unwavering positivity and determination.

However, Friday night painted a different picture. Following the Mets’ defeat at the hands of the Yankees, compounded by the significant loss of Clay Holmes, Mendoza’s demeanor reflected a rare moment of despair. In his tenure with the Mets, he had never shown such a degree of despondency, as if he had finally met his match after enduring numerous setbacks.

“We all felt it. I’m not going to sugarcoat it: Last night was difficult,” Mendoza admitted before Saturday’s game against the Yankees. “This season has been tough on us with many of our star players out. But yesterday’s blow felt particularly heavy.”

The reason for this was the loss of Holmes, sidelined by a fractured fibula. Holmes had emerged as the standout performer in an otherwise lackluster season and was pivotal to the Mets’ hopes of clawing back to a competitive standing. Alongside Nolan McLean and Freddy Peralta, Holmes was part of a formidable trio in the rotation, offering a glimmer of hope for a potential winning streak—a lifeline to reignite the team’s playoff aspirations.
