Tragic Balcony Fall: Neighborhood Awakes to Disturbing Screams Before Man’s Fatal Plunge

0
Neighbours have described waking to screams after a man died in a suspected balcony fall at a unit complex in Castle Hill overnight.
Emergency services were called to Crane Road about 2.40am following reports of shouting coming from a fourth-floor apartment.
When paramedics arrived, they found a 44-year-old man critically injured in a garden area outside the complex after falling up to 15 metres from a balcony.

In the early hours of the morning, a man’s life was tragically cut short despite the valiant efforts of paramedics who arrived at the scene. Unfortunately, their attempts to save him proved unsuccessful, and the man was pronounced dead at the location.

Aaron Gregory, a neighbor, recounted being jolted awake by urgent cries for help. “It was around 3 a.m. when I was suddenly awakened by the sound of someone screaming, ‘Help me, help me, help me,'” he shared. The distressing calls echoed through the quiet night, signaling that something was amiss.

In response to the emergency, police and paramedics swiftly descended upon the street, quickly securing the area surrounding the apartment block. The presence of emergency vehicles and personnel created a scene of heightened tension and activity.

For Gregory, the commotion outside his home was deeply unsettling. The flurry of activity and the desperate pleas he heard left a lasting impression, highlighting the gravity of the situation unfolding just beyond his doorstep.

Gregory said the commotion outside was alarming.

“A little bit unnerving but hearing the police sirens I was like it’s going to get sorted out pretty quickly,” he said.

Another resident, Sid Bangar, said he was stunned by the scale of the emergency response.

“I just pulled over and saw the cops, very unreal to see cops in my area,” he said.

Investigators believe the man did not live at the unit and are now trying to establish exactly what happened before the fall.

It’s understood that a party was under way inside the apartment before the incident, but by the time police and paramedics arrived, guests had already left.

Detectives are treating the death as suspicious and are not ruling out arrests or charges as inquiries continue.

Bangar said the incident had left neighbours “very heartbroken” and “very sad”.

A crime scene remains in place while police continue speaking with witnesses and reviewing evidence.

Exploring the Political Dimensions of Antisemitism and Zionism: Insights from the Royal Commission Hearings

0

The Royal Commission on Antisemitism and Social Cohesion took a distinctly political turn in its second week. Initially focused on personal experiences of discrimination, the discussion has now shifted to how prejudice should be defined and measured.

During this phase, several expert witnesses testified, with lawyers from the commission and external organizations delving into the complex issue of distinguishing between antisemitism and criticism of Israel, alongside other controversial topics.

Julie Nathan, the research director at the Executive Council of Australian Jewry (ECAJ), faced inquiries on Monday regarding the criteria her organization uses to distinguish between pro-Palestinian activism and antisemitism.

For more than a decade, Nathan has been the author of ECAJ’s annual reports on antisemitism. These reports are frequently cited in media outlets and have highlighted a significant increase in antisemitism, particularly following the Hamas-led attacks on October 7, 2023, and Israel’s subsequent military actions in Gaza.

Despite this, some critics argue that ECAJ’s approach blurs the line between legitimate criticism of Israel and antisemitism, a claim Nathan contested during her testimony.

“Probably most criticism of Israel, even though it’s — a lot of it is incredibly offensive, we don’t treat as antisemitic,” she said, adding that the group’s “very strict guidelines” didn’t categorise such criticism as antisemitic except in certain instances, such as when it contained offensive anti-Jewish tropes or was used to target Jews.

Examples of antisemitism from ECAJ reports brought up in the hearing included the placing of Free Palestine stickers on synagogues and Jewish schools, and one 2024 incident in which such stickers were stuck on two soccer balls and kicked over a fence into a Jewish community facility.

Nathan said her report counted these incidents as antisemitic because, although they were criticisms of Israel, Jews and Jewish institutions had been targeted.

Antisemitism, Israel, anti-Zionism and the IHRA

Another point explored by Nathan and her interlocutors was whether comparing Israel’s actions to those of Nazi Germany was antisemitic.

Nathan said that, given the scale of the Holocaust, such comparisons were incorrect and offensive. She also said they were intentionally deployed because people “know that that will also hurt Jews, that we are incredibly offended by that”.

Nathan explained that this type of discourse was categorised as antisemitism by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA), an intergovernmental organisation founded in the late 90s whose guidelines she described as providing “good guidance” for the work of groups like ECAJ.

However, the IHRA definition — which is endorsed by dozens of nations, including Australia, but not the United Nations — has faced significant pushback, with critics accusing it of impeding political expression and academic inquiry.

For instance, the authors of a 2022 academic paper criticising the definition said that, while “broad unqualified statements treating Nazism and Zionism as similar, or equally bad, are likely to spring from antisemitism and/or gross ignorance”, this restriction stymied genuine historical scholarship.

“Historians and others who study these and other ethno-nationalist movements of European origin, for example Serbian nationalism, may quite reasonably identify certain historical parallels along with major dissimilarities,” they wrote.

The definition was again discussed during a Tuesday appearance by Andre Oboler, CEO of the Online Hate Prevention Institute and a long-serving member of the Australian government’s delegation to the IHRA.

Oboler explained to the commission how his group had assessed the comments on 13 Australian government and media posts, which he said were rife with antisemitic tropes.

“[A] lot of it was about the government’s response to antisemitism, and people have reacted to that by saying: ‘Well, they’re only addressing antisemitism because the Jews control the government.’”

He said there were some contexts in which criticism of Zionism — the foundational ideology of the state of Israel — or its adherents should be considered antisemitic, but it depended on the context.

He said the repurposing of classic antisemitic tropes, such as Jewish people nefariously controlling institutions, was one such example: “So instead of saying ‘Jews control the banks’, it’s saying ‘Zionists control the banks’”.

“It’s pretty consistent that the vast majority of this antisemitism category is actually just old antisemitism, but instead of talking about Jews, it’s been coded to talk about Zionists, Israelis, or Israel,” he said.

Patterns of prejudice

The distinction between anti-Zionism and antisemitism also arose during the Tuesday appearance of emeritus professor Andrew Markus, a Monash University researcher involved in several significant surveys of both Australian Jewish community attitudes and Australians’ attitudes towards Jews and Israel.

At one point, Markus was pressed on how his surveys had used a framework that divided antisemitism into two distinct varieties: a Judeophobic antisemitism ( “traditional or classic prejudicial attitudes towards Jews as a group”) and an anti-Zionist form of antisemitism (“antisemitic attitudes directed at Israel and its supporters”).

The latter category involved respondents expressing levels of agreement or disagreement with statements such as “I am comfortable spending time with people who openly support Israel”, “Israel can get away with anything because its supporters control the media” and “Israel and its supporters are a bad influence on our democracy”.

Markus said it was “not at all” antisemitic for someone to indicate that they were uncomfortable with spending time with those who openly support Israel and stressed that what researchers were looking for was “the pattern of response”.

On whether it was antisemitic to compare Israel’s treatment of Palestinians to the persecution Jews suffered under the Nazis, Markus said it “totally depends on the context”, a qualification that he said was consonant with the IHRA definition.

A 2025 survey he carried out for The Jewish Independent media outlet found Greens voters had the “lowest level of agreement with negative statements on the Judeophobic scale, but the highest level on the anti-Zionist scale”, while One Nation voters “averaged the highest score on the Judeophobic scale, but second lowest on the anti-Zionist scale”.

Markus also discussed his work on the Scanlon Foundation’s annual Mapping Social Cohesion report, which found that negative attitudes towards certain religious groups had increased across the board in recent years.

From 2023 to 2025, the proportion of those holding negative views about Jewish people increased from 9 per cent to 15 per cent, while those holding negative attitudes about Hindus increased from 10 per cent to 14 per cent. Meanwhile, negative attitudes to Christians saw a shift of 16 per cent to 18 per cent and Muslims from 27 per cent to 35 per cent.

Palestinian group criticises exclusion

While some progressive Jewish groups, such as the Jewish Council of Australia, were granted leave to appear at the commission, a prominent Palestinian advocacy organisation has said it was “deeply disappointed” it hadn’t secured the same rights.

The Australia Palestine Advocacy Network (APAN) said on Thursday that it was “deeply concerned that the inquiry will rely heavily on submissions equating criticism of Israel, Zionism and Israel’s actions in Gaza with hatred of Jewish people, without rigorous inquiry”.

“Excluding voices from the Palestinian community increases the very real probability of producing an incomplete and polarising account of the rise in antisemitism,” it said in a media release.

It said that “within hours” of the 14 December Bondi massacre — which precipitated the establishment of the commission — the pro-Palestinian movement had been blamed for the attacks.

A royal commission spokesperson told the ABC that applications for leave to appear were “considered and determined on a case-by-case basis”.

“For each hearing block, the royal commission invites persons who consider they have a direct and substantial interest in the scope of the hearing block to make an application for leave to appear,” the spokesperson was quoted by the ABC as saying.

Massive Ukrainian Drone Strike Hits Moscow: Largest Attack in Months Claims 3 Lives

0

In a significant escalation, a Ukrainian drone strike on Moscow and its surrounding areas has resulted in at least three fatalities, according to Russian officials. This marks one of the most substantial aerial attacks in months.

Among the victims was a woman whose home in Khimki, located just northwest of Moscow, was hit by drones during the extensive assault on the region. This tragic incident was confirmed by local Governor Andrei Vorobyev on Sunday morning.

Authorities reported that rescue efforts were ongoing, as another individual was still trapped beneath building debris following the attack.

Additionally, two men lost their lives in the village of Pogorelki, approximately six miles north of the capital. The casualties occurred when debris from the drones impacted a construction site, as noted by Governor Vorobyev.

In his updates on social media, Vorobyev mentioned that the drone strike also inflicted damage on unspecified infrastructure as well as several high-rise buildings, further highlighting the scale of the assault.

The Moscow region surrounds, but does not include, the Russian capital.

In Moscow itself, at least 12 people were wounded in the nighttime strikes — mostly near the entrance to the city’s oil refinery, according to mayor Sergei Sobyanin.

Sobyanin reported the “technology” of the refinery has not been damaged.

Russian defenses shot down 81 drones headed for Moscow overnight, state agency Tass reported, citing Sobyanin, marking the largest attack on the capital in over a year.

Russia’s largest airport — Moscow’s Sheremetyevo — said drone debris had fallen on its premises without causing damage.

Ex-Washington County Deputy Charged with Child Exploitation Offenses

In Washington County, Tennessee, a former sheriff’s deputy faces serious charges after an investigation revealed he allegedly possessed over 100 images deemed as child sexual abuse materials (CSAM).

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) has confirmed that 27-year-old Jacob Byrd is now facing two counts of sexual exploitation of a minor, both charges involving more than 100 images.

Byrd surrendered himself to authorities at the Sullivan County Jail on Friday morning, as reported by the TBI in an official statement.

The investigation by TBI agents commenced in September following a tip-off from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. The center had identified “multiple files containing CSAM being distributed via accounts on platforms such as X, Discord, and Snapchat.”

The TBI’s release further disclosed that Byrd was working with the Washington County Sheriff’s Office at the time the investigation began and was linked to the accounts used to disseminate the illicit materials.

A search warrant was executed at Byrd’s Sullivan County home, and authorities seized multiple electronics.

“Byrd was terminated from the sheriff’s office at the time the allegations surfaced,” the TBI stated.

A personnel action form from the WCSO states Byrd was fired on Oct. 23, 2025 for “violation of general orders.”

The Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Commission decertified Byrd on March 19, 2026, according to the commission’s documentation.

A Sullivan County Grand Jury returned the indictments charging Byrd in May.

Revealed: The Real Reason Meghan and Harry Are Distanced from Their A-List Friends

0

There are star-studded guest lists, and then there was the roster of luminaries who attended Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding nearly eight years ago, on May 19, 2018. It was a dazzling affair that brought together a mix of Meghan’s co-stars from her television series “Suits,” including her bridesmaid and close friend, stylist and influencer Jessica Mulroney, alongside a who’s who of celebrities and dignitaries.

On that memorable day at St. George’s Chapel in Windsor, the newlyweds were surrounded by notable figures such as Oprah Winfrey, George and Amal Clooney, David and Victoria Beckham, Serena Williams, and actor Idris Elba, mingling with members of the royal family and aristocracy. It was a gathering that marked a moment of unity and celebration.

However, as time has progressed, so too have the dynamics within this once-illustrious circle. It seems that a number of those high-profile friends who were present eight years ago have since distanced themselves from the Sussexes. This reflects a broader pattern of estrangement between Harry and Meghan and the Hollywood elite, a divide that has become increasingly pronounced.

Insiders suggest that the couple, much like their relationship with the entertainment industry’s power players, have encountered rifts with many of their former A-list connections, leaving them with few bridges left to cross. Yet, despite the apparent shift in their social sphere, Harry and Meghan reportedly remain unfazed, with an associate noting, “They don’t get it. They never think it is them.”

Not that Harry and Meghan believe that this could possibly be their fault. ‘They don’t get it. They never think it is them,’ one associate of theirs tells me.

So, where once there was a warm connection between the couple and those powerful friends in the pews, there is now, if not outright froideur, a puzzling distance.

My source tells me: ‘They love famous people – they are very name-droppy. The association gives them a kick. But if someone stops calling they don’t ask why.’

Over time, of course, some friendships naturally peter out, particularly if you change continents as the Sussexes did following Megxit in 2020.

Harry and Meghan have fallen out with many showbiz power-players, and now, Alison Boshoff reveals, there have been similar fallings-out with the A-list friends who attended their wedding

Harry and Meghan have fallen out with many showbiz power-players, and now, Alison Boshoff reveals, there have been similar fallings-out with the A-list friends who attended their wedding

But this appears far more than naturally just losing touch.

Arguably the most powerful guest at the wedding in Windsor, in a rose pink Stella McCartney dress, was Oprah.

She professed herself in awe on the day. ‘I can’t wait to see the goodness that will come from their union,’ she wrote in her Oprah magazine. ‘Goodness that I know for sure will help change the way the world thinks about what is possible, even more than it already has.’

People were at a loss as to how she knew the couple. It later emerged she had not actually met Meghan before the wedding – but had invited Meghan’s mother Doria over for lunch at her Montecito house, followed by kumquats in the garden and a yoga session.

Commentators immediately speculated that Oprah had already launched a charm offensive hoping to secure a big exclusive with the pair – and so it proved in March 2021 with her bombshell two-hour interview; Meghan pregnant and wiping away tears as she talked about how living in the Royal Family had caused her to become distressed to a suicidal degree, Oprah brimful of sympathy.

Today, though, things are rather chillier. While Meghan has ‘definitely been to Oprah’s house’, I am told by a source ‘they are not as close as they once were’.

Indeed, the relationship appears to be existing on a hair’s breadth for one reason, as well-connected broadcaster and former Page Six columnist Paula Froelich, of NewsNation, tells me. ‘The truth is Oprah has been long-arming the Sussexes for some time,’ she says. ‘She can’t let them drift too far away because if something happens – one of the three big Ds, divorce, death or drama – she will want the interview. But she is not actually friends with them.’

Froelich also believes long-term alignment with Brand Sussex carries a reputational risk, hence former celebrity friends distancing themselves. ‘No one wants to hang out with Meghan.

‘Lots of reasons, but she might sell clothes while using their name,’ she says, referring to Meghan’s latest business wheeze where she promotes her outfits through a fashion app that gives her a 10 per cent cut of the sales generated. Can you imagine? “What to wear to visit Oprah,”’ Froelich adds, with a shudder.

Indeed, a distance had already emerged, quite deliberately on Oprah’s part.

Arguably the most powerful wedding guest, in a pink Stella McCartney dress, was Oprah. But her relationship with Harry and Meghan today is reportedly 'chillier' than it was back then

Arguably the most powerful wedding guest, in a pink Stella McCartney dress, was Oprah. But her relationship with Harry and Meghan today is reportedly ‘chillier’ than it was back then

As Froelich says: ‘Oprah was tarnished by her association with them. The interview she did in 2021 was so soft and she didn’t push back on anything said, so she was seen as a sycophant rather than a great interviewer.’

Certainly, Oprah seemed keen to disassociate herself from the family drama, which she was asked about repeatedly in the months following the interview. She took particular offence at the description of the interview as ‘bombshell’.

There were other indications of a rupture setting in. Asked about the Sussexes and their estrangement from the royals in September 2022, after the death of the Queen, she said: ‘I think in all families – you know, my father passed recently, this summer – and when all families come together for a common ceremony, the ritual of, you know, burying your dead, there’s an opportunity for peacemaking. Hopefully, there will be that.’ My source is blunt about Oprah’s dissension with the Sussexes.

‘The bottom line is Oprah only likes people when they have something to offer her. Honestly, I think she might be worse than they are for that.’

A cynical view, perhaps, but Oprah is oddly absent in Harry and Meghan’s lives after 2021, just when you might imagine she would weigh in to help friends starting a new life.

For example, did Oprah lend her immense clout to Meghan’s Netflix show With Love, Meghan, filmed in 2024? She did not.

Instead, Meghan had to make do with a largely obscure crop of guests to chat and cook for, which included people she plainly barely knew such as comedian Mindy Kaling (who was chided: ‘It’s Sussex now’ when she called the Duchess ‘Meghan Markle’).

Did Oprah feature Meghan’s children’s book The Bench in her book club – which has a million followers on Instagram? Again no, and it would have been a useful boost.

But on her personal Instagram account – where she has 22million followers – Oprah shows lots of love for entrepreneur Emma Grede and podcaster Jamie Kern Lima, both also in Meghan’s circle, and their books. But there is nothing of the Montecito Two.

The only sign there’s any life in the association came last November when Meghan’s ‘fruit spread gift box’ from her brand As Ever was featured on Oprah’s annual holiday wish list.

Meghan was quoted in Oprah’s newsletter saying: ‘We’re honoured to be included in the season’s quintessential guide to gifting. So much love is poured into each recipe to bring the brightness and warmth of the garden to your home in every season.’

It could hardly sound any more corporate and less like what you might say about a friend.

George and Amal Clooney also attended St George’s Chapel, Windsor. How did they know the couple? Some say they didn’t and the invitation was a simple ‘reach out’ from the Sussexes

The other most high-profile guests at the Sussex wedding were George and Amal Clooney. Amal commanded attention in a spectacular yellow dress and the actor and his human rights lawyer wife had prime seats, sitting next to Lady Carolyn Warren, the wife of the Queen’s bloodstock adviser John Warren, and opposite Princess Margaret’s son Viscount Linley.

How did they know the couple? Some say that – just like Oprah – they didn’t and the invitation was a simple ‘reach out’ from Meghan and Harry to those more successful and connected than themselves.

Others say Amal and Meghan share common ground via the private members’ club Soho House, albeit on a casual basis.

There must have been some kind of link because soon after the wedding, in August 2018, Harry and Meghan enjoyed a secret, three-day ‘mini-moon’ vacation at George and Amal’s Lake Como estate, Villa Oleandra, in Italy.

The Clooneys were in residence and sent their jet to pick up and drop off the couple from the UK.

By February 2019, Meghan was heavily pregnant with baby Archie and Amal was prominently involved in her flashy baby shower in New York – attended by US TV anchor Gayle King, Serena Williams and others.

The Clooneys, who live between New York, LA, London, France and Italy, again found space for Meghan on their private jet for that jaunt – a luxury which would have been well beyond the Sussex pocket – and retired tennis champ Serena apparently picked up the huge tab for the swish Mark Hotel.

An associate says this kind of gifting from friends is very much the done thing for the Sussexes, whose money troubles have only grown since the end of their lucrative Spotify and Netflix deals.

‘They ask for a lot of resources to be spent as they believe it is a privilege to be in their circle,’ says a source, adding: ‘They think they are entitled to all the private planes.’ The source also observes that Meghan is ‘cheap’ or stingy in British parlance. ‘She is the cheapest!’ the insider exclaims.

The burgeoning friendship with the Clooneys ended, however, with Megxit. The source says: ‘The Clooneys now want nothing to do with them.’ Certainly Harry and Meghan have never been invited to the Clooneys’ annual fundraiser, The Albies, which honour humanitarian work. Nor have the Sussexes, who regard themselves as prominent humanitarians, ever won an honour, which appears to be quite a snub. Paula Froelich says: ‘George and Amal Clooney were never friends with her… they have literally nothing in common and side with the actual royals.’

This is true: the Clooneys are long time supporters of the King’s Trust. This week both attended an event to celebrate the trust’s 50th anniversary where Amal, in vintage McQueen, made an effusive speech, saying: ‘I’m grateful to the King for all the incredible work the trust is doing for young people around the world… and Your Majesty, having just watched your recent trip abroad, I think I can speak for everyone here tonight when I say we’re so proud to have you as our King.’

The Sussexes’ association with Idris Elba, who DJ’d at their wedding, seems to have ended in the same way for the same reasons – Elba has long been a prominent supporter of the King’s Trust.

Indeed the star, who was also at the event on Monday night, started his acting career with the help of a £1,500 grant from the then Prince’s Trust which allowed him to train at the National Youth Music Theatre. Elba has even made a documentary with the King about the charity, which will be out on Netflix in the autumn.

And so, while the actor once called Harry a ‘good friend’ and revealed bride Meghan had sent him a playlist of tunes for the wedding, including Dr Dre, there has been no sign of them as much as meeting in six years.

Harry and David first got to know each other when backing the FA¿s bid to host the World Cup, and their friendship progressed. (Pictured together in 2010 at an FA reception in South Africa)

‘From what I can see the people who have stayed most loyal to them are beneath them and get something out of it. Everyone else they fall out with,’ a source tells our columnist

The falling out with David and Victoria Beckham is no less notable. The pair had declared themselves thrilled to be at the wedding in 2018, some eight years after Harry and David first got to know each other when backing the FA’s bid to host the World Cup. Their friendship further progressed when they worked together on the successful London 2012 Olympic bid.

Then, after the wedding, David travelled to Australia to lend his lustre to the Invictus Games and was puzzled when Harry didn’t meet him.

Some have speculated this snub was down to Meghan, who believed the Beckhams were beneath her. They were said to have fallen out more when Meghan suspected Victoria of leaking information about her to the papers – a suggestion which apparently made David rage.

In contrast, things have been far more equable between the Beckhams and the other royals. David remains close to Harry’s ‘nemesis’ William, and is closer yet to King Charles. The friendship with Harry has, you could say, been allowed to tail off.

The other big star at the wedding, tennis legend Serena, introduced Meghan to her agent Jill Smoller in 2006 when Meghan was an obscure actress writing her blog The Tig. I hear Serena is ‘fine’ with the couple but they definitely aren’t as close any more.

While Serena was at the wedding with her husband Alex Ohanian, she has since put distance between herself and Meghan because, I’m told, ‘she is not a drama queen and she tires of it all’.

Apparently Serena’s new bestie is social butterfly Emma Thynn, the Marchioness of Bath. Serena posed with her at the recent Met Gala, along with Meghan’s ex-friend, former Vogue editor Edward Enninful.

Meghan’s formerly close friendship with Canadian socialite and stylist Jessica Mulroney has also ended, somewhat spectacularly, after Mulroney got caught up in a racism storm over an argument with an influencer in 2021.

Her TV show was cancelled and so was her relationship with Meghan, who had made her chief bridesmaid, yet did not speak publicly in support of her old friend.

The Duchess’s old agency boss, Gina Nelthorpe-Cowne, who represented her in her Suits years, once remarked: ‘Meghan moves on,’ and so it proved.

Many others who in 2018 had seemed a part of their clique are also no longer in the Sussex gang.

Meghan’s colleagues from Suits were at the wedding in force but only Abigail Spencer appears to have stayed close to Meghan.

Actor Patrick J. Adams confirmed in 2024 that he wasn’t really in touch with her, as did Gina Torres, who said the cast no longer had the Duchess’s phone number and she was not part of their group chat.

A handful of close friendships remain. Elton John is still very tight with Prince Harry, although it is observed ‘that is a Harry relationship,’ rather than a Meghan one. It’s also interesting he no longer sends his private plane to bring Harry and his family for holidays at his Saint-Tropez home.

Soho House executive Markus Anderson, who was instrumental in the early days of the couple’s romance and honoured with a front row pew at their wedding, is still very close to Meghan, staying at their Montecito home and going on family holidays with them. One source says: ‘It is a genuine relationship and he says they are lovely people whom he cherishes.’

Another, though, offers: ‘It’s for clout. They made him.

‘From what I can see the people who have stayed most loyal to them are beneath them and get something out of it. Everyone else they fall out with.’

Shocking Incident: Father Arrested for Forcibly Shaving Teen Daughter’s Head in Disturbing Punishment

In Eagle Mountain, Utah, a man faces serious charges after being accused of brutally assaulting his 14-year-old daughter. The allegations include slamming her head into the ground and forcibly shaving her hair as a form of punishment.

To shield the victim’s identity, Nexstar’s ABC4 has chosen not to disclose the man’s name. He has been charged with a first-degree felony for child torture and three additional counts for making violent threats.

The incident came to light when police were called to a residence following a report of suspected child abuse. The report was made by a witness who claimed to have seen surveillance footage depicting the man assaulting his daughter and cutting off her hair.

Danville’s Star Athlete Brown Propels Vikings Toward State Championships in Four Events

The Danville Vikings are making headlines as several athletes, including standout junior Samantha Brown, prepare to compete at the Class 2A State Track and Field finals. Brown will showcase her talents in four events.

Samantha Brown has qualified for the state finals in the pole vault, triple jump, 4×100-meter relay, and 4×200-meter relay. Impressively, she clinched the sectional championship in every event except the triple jump, contributing significantly to Danville’s second-place sectional finish.

Reflecting on her achievements last year, Brown reached the state level in the relays and pole vault, with her best result being eighth place in the 4×100-meter relay. When asked about managing multiple events, Brown explained that it’s just a natural part of her athletic journey.

“You simply follow instructions,” Brown shared. “I go wherever my coaches direct me and execute their plans. The outcome is positive. The support from both coaches and teammates is incredible. We’re truly like a family, always encouraging one another. That unity is what propels us forward.”

“The crowd was here for the launch of a new watch. However, Swatch has announced that they will remain closed today at their Oak Brook location,” police informed ABC7.

Early Saturday, a significant crowd was visibly assembled outside the storefront.

The Royal Pop Collection, a joint effort by Swatch and luxury brand Audemars Piguet, includes pocket watches priced at approximately $400. These watches are reportedly being sold online for more than $1,000, underscoring their high demand.

“To all our dear fans worldwide of our AP x Swatch collab, launched on May 16. To ensure the safety of both our customers and our staff in Swatch stores, we kindly ask you not to rush to our stores in large numbers to acquire this product,” Swatch said in a statement. “The Royal Pop Collection will remain available for several months. In some countries, queues of more than 50 people cannot be accepted, and sales may need to be paused.”

It was not yet clear when the Oak Brook Swatch store would reopen.

Louisiana Voters Decide to Close the Chapter on Bill Cassidy’s Senate Tenure

0

In February 2021, Bill Cassidy made headlines by voting to convict Donald Trump. It took Louisiana Republicans five years to decide their response, and on Saturday, they delivered their verdict.

Cassidy, who has served Louisiana in the U.S. Senate since 2015, failed to secure a spot among the top two contenders in the Republican primary. Consequently, he will not be moving forward to the June 27 runoff, marking the end of his Senate tenure.

The runoff will feature Trump-backed Representative Julia Letlow and State Treasurer John Fleming, who will vie against each other to become the Republican candidate facing the Democratic nominee in the November election. In Louisiana, the general election is typically a mere formality, with the decisive contest concluding on June 27.

INDICATORS WERE CLEAR: Bill Cassidy’s Chances of Advancing Were Slim from the Start

In the wake of the January 6 Capitol riot, Cassidy was among seven Republican Senators who voted to convict Trump, a move that placed him squarely in the political crosshairs. The Louisiana Republican Party formally censured him, and Trump kept a close watch. Throughout the past four years, every poll, opponent, and endorsement in this race was influenced by that pivotal decision.

The Impeachment Vote That Defined a Career’s End

Cassidy was one of seven Senate Republicans to vote to convict Trump following the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot. The vote made him a target. The Republican Party of Louisiana censured him formally. Trump kept score. And for the next four years, every poll, every challenger, and every endorsement in this race was shaped by that single vote.

Trump endorsed Letlow on January 18, 2026. She entered the race two days later. The message was unambiguous: Louisiana is one of the most Trump-aligned states in the country, and the president wanted Cassidy gone. According to reports, Cassidy was the only Republican senator Trump’s team actively targeted for defeat in this cycle. Saturday’s result suggests the effort worked.

What the Runoff Actually Decides

With Cassidy out, the race narrows to a question that cuts to the center of Republican politics heading into the midterms: does Trump’s endorsement close the deal, or does a candidate who earned his position without it have a viable path?

Letlow represents Louisiana’s 5th Congressional District in the northeastern part of the state. She entered the race with the full weight of the Trump-Landry coalition behind her, and she runs into the runoff carrying that endorsement. Fleming, Louisiana’s current State Treasurer and a former congressman who represented the 4th District from 2009 to 2017, built his campaign from the ground up. He was in this race before Letlow was. He was a founding member of the House Freedom Caucus, served in Trump’s first administration, and consolidated rural Louisiana without the president’s formal backing.

The runoff is a live test of those two different varieties of Trump-aligned conservatism — the candidate the president chose, and the candidate who was already there.

18-Year-Old Detained Following Car Theft and Collision with Deer

Staff Report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Authorities apprehended 18-year-old Cameron William Ansel yesterday on charges of car theft and subsequent damage after allegedly colliding with a deer.

The vehicle’s owner informed the Gainesville Police Department that she mistakenly left her keys inside her car upon parking it in Bridgelight. A witness reportedly saw Ansel operating the vehicle in the vicinity and pursued him into Phoenix, where she observed Ansel and another individual exit the car and enter an apartment.

After being read his Miranda rights, Ansel initially refuted claims of driving the car. However, he eventually confessed to approaching the vehicle, discovering it was unlocked, entering, finding the keys inside, and driving away.

The second individual who exited the car claimed ignorance of the vehicle being stolen.

The officer reported that the vehicle had front-end damage, and Ansel reportedly said the damage occurred when he hit a deer while driving to the city of Alachua.

The officer reported that Ansel has an active warrant out of Alachua County for burglary of an unoccupied dwelling, but that case is not yet on the court website, and he has not been booked on that charge.

Ansel has been charged with grand theft of a motor vehicle and felony property damage. Judge Gloria Walker set bail at $15,000.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
