Iowa Tragedy: Negligence in Post-Surgery Care Leads to Fatal Outcome in Hernia Repair Case

0

An Iowa family’s lawsuit claims a woman passed away following routine hernia surgery due to an overlooked infection and severe constipation, symptoms dismissed by hospital staff as “normal.” The legal action targets a surgeon and two nurses.

Laura Belt, aged 46, succumbed in May 2024 to complications from a bowel perforation leading to sepsis—conditions allegedly undetected at Decatur County Hospital, as reported by the Iowa Capital Dispatch.

The family has filed a medical malpractice suit against Dr. Edwin Vincent Wehling, along with nurses Brandi Oesch and Tammy Roberts. The hospital itself is also listed as a defendant in the case.

Furthermore, the Iowa Board of Medicine has accused Wehling of “professional incompetency” and engaging in practices deemed “harmful and detrimental to the public,” according to the outlet. A hearing concerning these disciplinary charges is set for September.

Wehling operated on Belt, while Oesch and Roberts handled her recovery, after she came in for a hernia repair surgery at Decatur County Hospital, according to the lawsuit, Iowa Capital Dispatch reported.

After the surgery, Belt allegedly told staff she felt “very uncomfortable” and “very anxious and tearful” as she suffered from “constant drainage” of “significant amounts of feculent, brown liquid” pouring out of her incision site. Belt also allegedly had not had a bowel movement since the surgery, according to the outlet.

Belt was discharged from the hospital a week after the hernia operation. The incision site was still leaking more than a week after she was discharged, according to the complaint.

The woman texted images of the brown liquid to Roberts.

The brown liquid was determined to be stool, and the nurses assured her that this was nothing abnormal, according to the complaint.

“Consulted with Brandi, she states all is normal … Brandi stated incision will drain like this for at least a month,” Roberts texted Belt on May 9, 2024.

The day after the exchange with Roberts, Belt’s family says she had a video call with Oesch and showed her the brown fluid still pouring from the wound, but she was allegedly not told to seek emergency medical care.

On May 11, 2024, Belt was taken by ambulance to the Wayne County Hospital’s Emergency Department, where she was told her incision site was showing signs of dead, necrotic tissue along with “constant drainage” of stool, and she was diagnosed as being in septic shock in connection with an infection stemming from hernia repair, according to the lawsuit.

Two days later, Oesch allegedly added a back-charted entry into Belt’s electronic medical record at Decatur County Hospital, affirming she had the video call with Belt and indicated that the woman was crying and that fluid had poured out of her wound onto the bathroom floor during the call.

“This nurse advised I would call Dr. Wehling and advise. This nurse notified Dr. Wehling and he requested (the antibiotic) Bactrim to be started,” Oesch wrote, according to the complaint.

The lawsuit claims no Bactrim prescription was ever ordered.

Belt died on May 15, 2024, and Wehling, Oesch and Roberts have all denied any wrongdoing.

Wehling has claimed that the cause of Belt’s injuries and complications “may have been a pre-existing medical condition and/or a subsequently occurring medical condition for which (he) is not responsible,” according to Iowa Capital Dispatch.

A trial has been scheduled for Aug. 23.

Exploring the Passionate Pinball Community in Central Illinois

SAVOY, Ill. (WCIA) — Illinois holds a special place in the history of pinball, with its origins tracing back to Chicago in the 1930s. Today, the legacy thrives, branching out across the state and finding a vibrant home in Central Illinois.

At Triptych Brewing in Savoy, patrons enjoy more than just craft beers. Tucked away in a cozy back room, a lineup of pinball machines hums with activity, drawing in a passionate community of players.

Among them is Kat Davis, a pinball aficionado from Central Illinois who unexpectedly ventured into the competitive scene. Despite her lifelong love for the game, her foray into competition was a serendipitous discovery.

“I did a quick search on Facebook about pinball,” Davis recounted. “I found an event happening in Peoria, and although I felt a bit daunted by the unfamiliar faces, I decided to give it a shot.”

Her decision paid off, as she not only embraced the competitive spirit but also forged lasting friendships she hadn’t anticipated.

“I think we’re a bunch of funny, silly folks having a good time,” she said with a smile.

She’s one of the dozen women part of the Central Illinois chapter of “Belles and Chimes.” It’s an all-women organization promoting inclusive, competitive pinball.

“I love my pinball family. Everybody is super welcoming, helpful and nice,” Stephanie Wysocki, the group’s tournament director, said. “I love that my pinball skills have gotten so much better just from playing with other people.”

People of all ages and skill levels meet once a month, creating camaraderie all around a game spanning generations.

“My daughter is here playing. That’s one aspect of it that I love,” Brian Woodard said.

He got into pinball thanks to a college roommate at the U of I. Since graduating, he has stayed in the Champaign-Urbana community and serves as president of the Illini Pinball Association.

Bloomington-based “Punk Rock Pinball” is another popular pinball group in Central Illinois.

“We have folks who come as far as Chicago, St. Louis, the Quad Cities, Cincinnati, all over the place. They come, compete and play at our club there [in Bloomington] too,” Wysocki said.

No matter what league you’re part of, the mission is the same. These self-proclaimed “pinball nerds” strive to create a community where everyone feels welcomed and ready to score.

Beagle Rescue: 300 Dogs Freed from Research Facility Experience Freedom

Somewhere out there, Snoopy is grinning widely.

This past Friday marked a significant day for over 300 beagles who were liberated from a breeding facility in Wisconsin, where they had been raised specifically for scientific experimentation. Thanks to an agreement forged between the breeders and animal rights advocates, many more furry friends are poised to experience newfound freedom in the coming days.

While animal rights groups are sometimes seen as extreme, I find myself in agreement with HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy on this matter: it’s time to halt painful and often inhumane research on our loyal companions.

For a great number of these dogs, it was their first opportunity to romp and frolic, behaving like the happy hounds they were always meant to be:

Fox6 Milwaukee provided coverage of this heartwarming story on Friday, shedding light on the events that led to this liberation:

Fox6 Milwaukee reported on the news Friday and detailed what led up to it:

The first van loads of beagles left Ridglan Farms on Friday, the first of at least 10 days of transporting hundreds of dogs to rescues and shelters across the country.

After years of effort, it was an emotional time for activists as the beagles touched grass for the first time and explored a world they had never before experienced.

The beagles were screened by veterinarians, received vaccinations and were given Benadryl, to ensure they don’t have reactions to those vaccinations.

Three hundred dogs were removed from Ridglan Farms on Friday. Hundreds more will be released in the coming days.

Ridgland Farms didn’t just enter the agreement out of the kindness of their hearts, however. In 2024, witnesses alleged that they saw sick experiments on dogs’ eyes without the use of anaesthesia. A judge found probable cause that Ridglan had committed crimes of animal cruelty, and later, a special prosecutor assigned to the case said he would not press charges if they surrendered their breeding licenses by July 1.

It’s not the first positive beagle story we’ve written about in recent years. That Bond villain Dr. Anthony Fauci was knee-deep in promoting experiments on our furry friends:

Rep. Nancy Mace (SC-01) lauded the release of the animals:

These beagles spent their lives in a lab.

Now, their world has changed. They touched grass for the first time and have a lifetime of love and safety ahead of them.

In Congress, we’ve pushed for legislation to end cruel animal research and continued to be a voice in Washington for the voiceless.

This is a HUGE milestone for animal welfare. You’re safe now. 🐾

The activists’ storming of the facility in March was controversial, and as someone who has heavily criticized violent ICE protesters and vandals, I do not condone it. However, I applaud the efforts of RFK Jr. and others to lawfully end experimentation on dogs, and I love to see these little guys let loose.

Enjoy your new world, precious pups.

Kelsey Parts Ways After a Decade, Calls Out Rosie’s Backhanded Compliment

Breaking news from the world of reality TV: Kelsey has officially parted ways with her boyfriend, and she’s ready to face life without the comforts of his household staff. Meanwhile, on the latest episode of Real Housewives of Rhode Island, Alicia and Liz are planning an exciting group getaway, promising a fun-filled adventure for everyone involved. However, when Kelsey makes a snide remark towards Rosie, tensions start to rise. Could Kelsey be deflecting attention from her own personal drama?

RHORI Recap: Kelsey Ends Her 10-Year Relationship, Accuses Rosie of Exaggerating After a Backhanded Compliment, and Jo-Ellen Opens Up About Her Past

In a phone call with Liz, Kelsey reveals that her breakup was inevitable as the relationship had simply run its course. Her boyfriend didn’t resist and even agreed that moving on was the best decision for her. Now, Kelsey must adjust to a less opulent lifestyle without the perks she once enjoyed.

The Newport trip that Liz and Alicia are organizing is set to take place at the largest privately-owned mansion in the area. Rosie is thrilled about the getaway, feeling she has redeemed herself after an incident at Polo. Although she’s still at odds with Kelsey, Rosie’s newfound confidence and rapport with the group have eased her anxiety. She prides herself on being genuine, a quality she feels Jo-Ellen lacks.

Elsewhere, Jo-Ellen is out shopping with her sister in preparation for Newport, and the conversation turns to their late grandfather, who recently passed at the age of 100. His death stirs up childhood memories and unresolved feelings about Jo-Ellen’s relationship with her mother, whom she believes favored her sister. Struggling with the lack of a maternal bond, Jo-Ellen has distanced herself from her mother while seeking emotional support from her husband. Despite her efforts to address these issues with her mother, Jo-Ellen is determined to break the cycle with her own children.

Jo-Ellen is shopping with her sister for Newport and they discuss the death of their 100-year-old grandfather. Losing her grandfather brings up feelings and emotions about Jo-Ellen’s childhood, especially the relationship with her mother. Jo-Ellen feels like her mom favors her sister and that she never had a motherly bond with her. Jo-Ellen wonders why her mom can’t show love and so she has distanced herself.  She finds it hard to forgive her mom about her childhood and leans on her husband for the love and affection she has always been seeking. Jo-Ellen has tried to talk to her mom about her feelings, but at least she stopped the cycle with her own children.

Kelsey is busy packing up at her ex’s and it is a terrifying thought for her. She was 20 years old when she moved into this mansion and this is her first time being solo. Liz is there to help support her and she gives Kelsey a small compass to show how proud she is of her. It’s time for Kelsey to “be an adult” and dive into hair and makeup to help support herself.

Alicia refers to Newport as “iconic,” but will not drive there so Liz set up some vintage Rolls Royces so they can arrive in style. No one has heard from Rulla and so they take off and head on their way. Liz gives us the historical background on the castle they will be staying in -it’s a friend of a friend’s home- and Alicia wonders how Kelsey is coping. Since Kelsey is going through major life changes, she is really looking forward to this trip.

Alicia calls Rulla who does not answer. Once Liz and Alicia arrive at the castle, they get a tour of the 29 bedrooms and pick their spots.  There are two butlers and so Kelsey will feel right at home with this service. When it comes to her room choice, Kelsey is purposely picking the one furthest from Kelsey.

Alicia explains that the girls need to put on cute tea-party outfits so they can have a doll lunch. That’s right, a doll lunch.  Alicia brought her dolls along so the ladies can pick the one that speaks to them. According to Alicia, you can tell a lot about a person based on the doll they pick.

As Kelsey curls Jo-Ellen’s hair, she shares how she now needs to figure out about adulthood.  Bills, mortgage payments- what are these things?

Rosie has some bangs for the luncheon and Jo-Ellen claims she looks like a stripper.  Brutal.  The dolls are on full display and Alicia is happier than I’ve seen her all season.  According to Jo-Ellen, “The way Alicia likes dolls is the way I like Botox.”

They still have not heard from Rulla and at this point, it’s getting rude. Alicia feels like she does not want to hear anything more about her marriage and Liz points out that she thinks Rulla questions Jo-Ellen’s motives.

Liz lets the group know that they have a little while before the black tie dinner and during the down time, Alicia whips out her metal detector to hunt for some jewels.  She is the gift that keeps on giving. In the meantime, Liz is planning this masquerade dinner. She has the butler deliver masks that represent everyone’s personalities. The women are directed to wear the mask to the ball so they can reveal their true selves.

Liz dons a wolf mask because she is trying to portray that she is not the wolf in sheep’s clothing, rather she is the sheep in wolf’s clothing.  She wants the women to share a side that others do not know. Jo-Ellen opens up first and explains that her mom sent her away to a behavioral program in high school and admits that she is not the one who starts things, rather she is the one who continues it. Liz shares that she has had “incredible loss at a young age” and so she has abandonment issues.  Liz claims that she is hard to get to know because of this.

Ashley talks about her fear of what’s to come and get highly emotional, which just confuses everyone.  Rosie states that she is actually shy in real life. Now, she is working on showing her genuine self. Kelsey is sensitive about her relationship and speaks about her break up with her “sugar daddy,” according to Rosie.  Rosie is not surprised by Kelsey’s move, considering Kelsey has spoken about her relationshipS with others.

Kelsey’s ex still pays for things like her health and car insurance.  She is getting a place of her own and her ex even agreed to pay the rent until she gets on her feet. Kelsey explains this is the least he can do, considering this is like a divorce.

Alicia talks of the dark things that no kid can see and from what she remembers her dad left her homeless.  Liz points out that Alicia is stretching it and she was never truly homeless. Her grandparents took her in. Alicia realizes that Liz is trying to protect her family, but she should not diminish what she went through as a child.

Kelsey states that she is happy Rosie is actually telling the truth and it’s refreshing to see her being honest. Holy backhanded comment. Kelsey claims that her pageant background helps her find BS girls and Rosie is one of them.  But really, who is Rosemary? Ashley jumps to Rosie’s defense, particularly because they JUST had a conversation about Ashley sticking up for her more. Kelsey explains that she has felt an “ingenuiness” from Rosie.

Rosie is confused by Kelsey’s comments and is sharing her feelings with Ashley post-dinner. She is venting behind closed doors, but Kelsey is listening to Rosie NOW getting into it, slinking out of confrontation.  Kelsey barges into the room and demands to know what is going on, shocking both Ashley and Rosie.

Ashley takes the lead, but Kelsey does not think she made a back-handed comment.  Kelsey points out that Rosie is not being completely honest with the group (ie: her house and getting fired from her job). Kelsey claims that Rosie exaggerates things, but the way that Kelsey is delivering the accusations is aggressive. Kelsey does not believe a word that comes out of Rosie’s mouth and she is discrediting everything in Rosie’s life. Rosie does, however, point out that Kelsey is coming for her marriage (that Kelsey does not have), her house (that Kelsey does not have), and her job (that Kelsey does not have). It’s a lot easier to project things onto Rosie instead of everyone talking about what’s really going on in Kelsey’s life…

Ellen Burstyn Reveals Key Lifestyle Changes That Keep Her Vital at 93

0

At 93, Ellen Burstyn is revealing her secrets to a long and healthy life.

In a recent chat on the “Literally! With Rob Lowe” podcast, the acclaimed actress, who has just launched her book “Poetry Says It Better: Poems to Help You Wake Up,” discussed the lifestyle changes she embraced to maintain her vitality well into her 90s.

The Oscar-winning star shared, “I no longer drink alcohol, smoke cigarettes, or use marijuana.”

She elaborated further, saying, “I’ve switched to a plant-based diet, and I make it a point to exercise by walking my dog several mornings each week. I also work out at the gym with a trainer.”

Burstyn concluded, “I lead a healthy life, and it truly pays off.”

While appearing on “Live With Kelly and Mark” last Tuesday, “The Exorcist” star said that she still exercises every day, noting that she particularly enjoys taking walks in New York City’s Central Park.

“That’s how you get to be 93 and still kicking,” Burstyn told co-hosts Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos.

Burstyn previously opened up about her choice to embrace a healthy lifestyle during a 2023 conversation with her “Law & Order: Organized Crime” co-star Christopher Meloni for Interview magazine.

The “Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore” actress pointed to eating well, becoming a vegetarian and avoiding alcohol, smoking, and drugs as key decisions.

“That’s what I decided after doing all those bad things for a couple of decades,” she said.

Burstyn explained that she also keeps her mind active through reading, creative work and maintaining a social life.

At the time, Burstyn questioned if ageism in Hollywood is a myth and revealed that her career was busier than “ever” at the age of 90.

Burstyn expressed her surprise over being offered so many roles in her later years, telling Meloni, “This is so bizarre. I turn 91 in December and I’m busier than I can ever remember being at any point in my career.”

“And I don’t understand it at all,” she continued. “I mean, what’s all this stuff about ageism in Hollywood? How did I get left out of it?”

When the 62-year-old actor asked Burstyn for her thoughts on the reason behind her continually robust career, the Michigan native offered one theory.

“I don’t know, except possibly that everybody else who could play those parts has already died, so I’m the only actress still standing who can play the great-grandmother or something,” she said.

After Meloni asked Burstyn asked what keeps her going and excited to work at her age, she shared that she begins every day with gratitude.

“I try to have the first words out of my mouth be, ‘Thank you,’” she said. “Thank you that I’m alive. Thank you that I’m safe. Thank you that I’m healthy. Thank you that I’m 90 and still going. Thank you for my doggies. I mean, I have a lot to live in a state of gratitude for.”

In “Law & Order: Organized Crime,” Burstyn played Bernadette “Bernie” Stabler, the troubled, bipolar mother of Meloni’s character Detective Elliot Stabler.

Burstyn originated the role during the tenth season of “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” when she appeared in the episode “Swing,” earning the Primetime Emmy Award for outstanding guest actress in a series for her performance.

She became a recurring guest star in the “Law & Order: Organized Crime” starting in the “Law & Order” spinoff’s second season in 2021.

Last month, NBC announced that it had canceled “Law & Order: Organized Crime” after five seasons.

Burstyn will next be seen in the upcoming drama film “Place To Be,” which also stars Taika Waititi, Pamela Anderson, Édgar Ramírez, Lena Waithe, Murray Bartlett and Maika Monroe.

Drug Detection Canine Uncovers Significant Discovery at Sydney Airport

A sniffer dog has helped identify an alleged large haul of heroin inside a suitcase at Sydney Airport.
Three men are accused of importing 14 kilograms of heroin after arriving on international flights.

Australian Border Force (ABF) officers conducted a search of the luggage belonging to two men, aged 35 and 36, who had just landed from Thailand on April 23.

During the inspection, officers reportedly uncovered a plastic bag concealed within the lining of each man’s carry-on luggage. These bags contained 4.5 kilograms of an off-white substance, which was subsequently identified as heroin.

Upon being confronted by authorities, the men attempted to escape, dashing through the terminal and into the international arrivals area before heading outside.

In an unexpected turn, a bystander assisted in apprehending the 35-year-old man, while officers utilized pepper spray to subdue him.

The 36-year-old suspect evaded capture initially but was eventually arrested in Surry Hills five days later, on April 28.

A third man, 34, who arrived on a separate flight from Thailand the same day was also arrested.

His bag also allegedly had heroin hidden in the lining.

Footage released by the Australian Federal Police from the airport includes a video of a dog sniffing and then sitting down by a small suitcase.

That’s usually a sign the dog has identified something suspicious.

The men were each charged with one count of importing a commercial quantity of a border-controlled drug contrary to subsection 307.1 (1) of the Criminal Code.

They face a maximum sentence of life in prison.

“The AFP continues to work hand-in-hand with the ABF to identify, disrupt and dismantle criminal syndicates that seek to harm Australian communities through drug importation,” AFP Detective Superintendent Davina Copelin said.

“Anyone contemplating involvement in drug trafficking should be aware these are serious offences.

“The penalties can be severe, including life imprisonment, and those involved will be detected, arrested and held to account before the courts.”

ABF Superintendent Elke West said Australian Border Force officers were Australia’s first line of defence.

“ABF officers operate around the clock at the border to stop harmful substances, including heroin, from reaching the community,” he said.

“While criminal syndicates continue to adapt their concealment techniques, our officers are supported by specialist training and sophisticated technology to uncover these imports.”

Unraveling Hantavirus: The Mysterious Illness Linked to a Fatal Cruise Ship Outbreak

0

In brief

  • Three people have died after a suspected outbreak of hantavirus on a cruise ship in the Atlantic Ocean.
  • Hantavirus is mainly spread between rodents but humans can become sick when exposed to droppings, urine and saliva.

A rare hantavirus outbreak aboard a cruise ship navigating the Atlantic Ocean has tragically claimed the lives of three individuals, as reported by the World Health Organization and South Africa’s health ministry.

Oceanwide Expeditions, a company based in the Netherlands, announced they are addressing a “serious medical situation” on the MV Hondius, a polar expedition vessel currently near Cape Verde, an island nation located off the western coast of Africa.

The cruise, which embarked from Argentina roughly three weeks ago, carried approximately 150 passengers. During its journey, the ship made several stops, including in Antarctica, before heading towards Cape Verde, according to various media sources.

A spokesperson for the Dutch foreign ministry has confirmed the deaths of two Dutch passengers, although additional details were not disclosed.

The first known victim was a 70-year-old man who passed away aboard the ship. His body was later removed when the vessel reached the British territory of Saint Helena in the South Atlantic, as reported by South Africa’s health department.

The man’s wife collapsed at an airport in South Africa trying to take a flight to her home country of the Netherlands, the department said. She died at a nearby hospital.

The third case, a 69-year-old Briton, was evacuated to Johannesburg, where he had been treated in intensive care.

Three others are sick, one of whom is in intensive care in South Africa.

The WHO, which is investigating the outbreak, said lab tests confirmed one person had hantavirus and five others were “suspected cases”.

Oceanwide Expeditions said Cape Verde authorities had not given permission for passengers requiring medical care to disembark, and Dutch authorities were trying to repatriate two sick passengers, along with the body of a deceased passenger.

The MarineTraffic global shipping website identified the vessel as a Dutch-flagged passenger cruise ship. It was docked in Praia, the capital of Cape Verde, on Sunday night, local time.

South Africa’s National Institute for Communicable Diseases said it was conducting contact tracing in the Johannesburg region to identify if others were exposed to the infected passengers in South Africa.

What is hantavirus?

According to the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), hantaviruses are a family of viruses that can cause serious illness and death.

Hantavirus mainly spreads between rodents, but humans can get infected through contact with infected mice or rats when exposed to their urine, droppings and saliva. In rare cases, it can be spread from person-to-person.

The virus made headlines after the late actor Gene Hackman’s wife, Betsy Arakawa, died from hantavirus infection in the United States last year. Hackman died about a week later at their home from heart disease.

Hantaviruses, which are found worldwide, cause two syndromes: hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS) and hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS).

HPS affects the lungs, with early symptoms including fatigue, fever and muscle aches usually starting one to eight weeks after contact with an infected rodent.

Later symptoms include coughing, shortness of breath and chest tightness as the lungs fill with fluid. About 38 per cent of people who develop respiratory symptoms die from the disease, according to the CDC.

HFRS affects the kidneys, with symptoms including intense headaches, back and abdominal pain, and fever usually developing one to two weeks after exposure.

Later symptoms include low blood pressure, lack of blood flow, internal bleeding and acute kidney failure. Between 5 and 15 per cent of cases are fatal, depending on the virus causing the infection.

There is no specific treatment or cure for hantavirus infections, but early medical attention can increase the chance of survival.

Concerns Rise as Virus Claims Three Lives and Leaves Brit Critical on Cruise Ship

0

Passengers aboard a cruise ship find themselves stranded at sea following a tragic turn of events, where three individuals have succumbed to a rat-transmitted virus, and a British man is battling for his life.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has confirmed the presence of six suspected hantavirus infections on the MV Hondius. The ship is currently en route from Ushuaia, Argentina, to Cape Verde, Africa.

The first to fall victim was a 70-year-old passenger, soon followed by his 69-year-old wife. Both were Dutch nationals, adding a somber note to the voyage.

A 69-year-old British passenger has been transported to Johannesburg, where he is receiving intensive care treatment.

On Sunday evening, the WHO issued a statement acknowledging awareness of the severe acute respiratory illness cases occurring on the cruise ship navigating the Atlantic.

It confirmed three people had died onboard – with the British man confirmed as the victim of a hantavirus infection – and said it was investigating six suspected cases in total.

Passengers have now told of their hell trapped on the ship – after being ordered to stay onboard while ‘awaiting approval’ to disembark.

A letter distributed to customers from cruise company Oceanwide Expeditions on Sunday, seen by the Daily Mail, informed them it was ‘awaiting approval’ for passengers to leave the ship.

The letter said: ‘As you are aware, we are responding to several cases of an unidentified virus.

‘We regret to share that, overnight, a guest presenting severe symptoms has passed away.

‘We are currently anchored offshore of Cape Verde and awaiting approval from the Cape Verde authorities to disembark, with priority given to those who require immediate medical care.

‘At this stage, we do not have authorisation from the Cape Verde authorities to disembark.’

The letter went on to advise that all those onboard continue to ‘follow best practices, wear face masks, maintain distancing, and, where possible, minimise contact with fellow guests’.

It added: ‘Please remain assured that we are applying pressure through all available channels, including at the diplomatic level, to provide urgent care to individuals presenting severe symptoms and to ensure all guests aboard can be properly supported within an adequate health screening process.’

One passenger, who wished to remain anonymous, told the Daily Mail: ‘We have not heard from Oceanwide at all. We still have friends on the ship.’

Last year, prices for a full trip on the vessel were between €12,500 for a bed in a shared cabin with other passengers and €40,000 (£35,000, $48,000) for the most luxurious private cabin.

Early symptoms of HPS include fatigue, fever and muscle aches.

Intensive headaches, back pain, nausea and blurred vision are symptoms of HFRS.

Minimising contact with rodents at home, in the workplace, or in a campsite can help reduce the risk of exposure to hantaviruses.

As of Sunday night, the WHO had laboratory confirmed one case of hantavirus infection and was investigating five additional suspected cases.

A spokesman said: ‘Of the six affected individuals, three have died and one is currently in intensive care in South Africa.

‘Investigations and a coordinated international public health response is underway. We will share more information as it becomes available.’

Laboratory testing and epidemiological investigations are now taking place – with medical care and support provided to passengers and crew.

The WHO confirmed ‘sequencing of the virus’ – to understand transmission and mutations – is also ongoing.

A source close to the case said the provisional toll was three dead, including a Dutch couple.

Speaking anonymously on Sunday, they added discussions were taking place to decide whether two sick passengers should be placed in isolation in hospital in Cape Verde.

They said the ship would then continue to Spain’s Canary Islands. The vessel is currently 1,000miles from the Canaries.

South Africa’s department of health confirmed a British tourist is being treated in a private health facility in Sandton, Johannesburg – adding his laboratory test results had come back positive for a hantavirus infection.

Speaking on social media, a Turkish passenger on the ship said his ‘Irish friend’ was receiving treatment in South Africa – but that, fortunately, his condition was ‘improving’.

He wrote: ‘Normally, human-to-human transmission is not common. However, we are in a very complicated situation. Please keep us in your thoughts.

‘We will complete this ocean crossing. Since we are not allowed to go ashore in Cape Verde, most likely we will head to the Canary Islands. We hope to be in good condition there.’

The South African Department of Health said the Dutch male passenger suffered fever, headache, abdominal pain and diarrhoea, and died in St Helena while his wife was taken to hospital in the Kempton Park area of South Africa after collapsing at an airport.

According to several online ship–tracking sites, the MV Hondius was just off the port of Praia, the capital of Cape Verde, on Sunday.

The vessel can accommodate around 170 passengers and has some 70 crew members.

The Foreign Office told the Daily Mail: ‘We are closely monitoring reports of a potential hantavirus outbreak on the cruise ship Hondius and stand ready to support British nationals if needed.

‘We are in touch with the cruise company and local authorities.’

Hantaviruses are known to cause a range of diseases in humans ranging from mild, flu-like illness to severe respiratory illness or haemorrhagic disease.

Early symptoms can include fatigue, fever, muscle aches and intensive headaches.

The risk of contracting the illness can be reduced through minimising contact with rodents.

Protest Erupts: Anti-ICE Demonstrators Arrested Amid Controversial Detention of Immigrant on Assault and Drug Charges

Authorities in New York detained nearly ten individuals over the weekend amid demonstrations against ICE, sparked by the detention of an undocumented immigrant facing charges of assault and drug possession.

The protests unfolded in Brooklyn’s Bushwick area following the apprehension of Chidozie Wilson Okeke, a Nigerian national with previous legal troubles, according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

DHS reports that Okeke initially entered the United States on a tourist visa in 2023. However, he failed to depart by the February 26, 2024 deadline stipulated in his visa.

During a Saturday immigration enforcement operation, Okeke allegedly ignored ICE agents’ instructions to exit his vehicle and attempted to strike them with the car. He is further accused of engaging in physical altercations, reportedly throwing punches and elbows at the agents.

The tensions in Bushwick were fueled by Okeke’s arrest, drawing demonstrators to the scene.

“Our officers followed their training and used the minimum amount of force necessary to make the arrest,” DHS said in a statement.

After his arrest, Okeke was taken to Wyckoff Heights Medical Center for a medical evaluation. Okeke “remained non-compliant during the medical evaluation, throwing himself to the floor and screaming,” DHS said, adding that he was eventually cleared by medical staff.

During the medical evaluation, a crowd of anti-ICE protesters gathered outside the hospital. DHS says the group damaged several ICE vehicles and assaulted agents, causing minor injuries.

The NYPD said officers responded to reports of disorderly protesters outside the hospital between Stanhope and Stockholm streets on Saturday at around 10:25 p.m. Officers reported observing several people acting disorderly, obstructing vehicle traffic and blocking emergency entrances and exits to the hospital.

Officers issued repeated verbal warnings for the protesters to disperse and return to the sidewalks, according to the department.

Nine people were then taken into custody, including eight who were arrested and charged with resisting arrest, obstructing governmental administration, reckless endangerment and criminal mischief, the NYPD said. One person was issued a summons and released.

The NYPD said it does not participate in civil immigration enforcement and had no prior awareness of the ICE operation.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani told a Gothamist reporter after the incident on Saturday that ICE raids are “cruel and inhumane” and “they do nothing to serve in the interest of public safety, and I’ve said that even directly to the president.”
