Historic Milestone: Mountain Empire Older Citizens Celebrates 50th Walkathon with Record-Breaking $138K Fundraiser!

In Wise County, Virginia, a vibrant gathering of community members assembled at Bullitt Park to participate in the 50th annual Walkathon. This event, dedicated to generating funds, aims to assist elderly residents with heating expenses during the cold winter season.

Organized by the Mountain Empire Older Citizens (MEOC), the walkathon focuses on aiding seniors who face difficulties in affording heating costs. All the contributions collected are channeled directly into the organization’s Emergency Fuel Fund, ensuring that those in need receive help.

Marsha Craiger, who oversees Emergency Services at MEOC, emphasized the crucial and immediate effect of these donations.

“Every cent donated to the Emergency Fuel Fund is allocated to purchasing essential heating resources like wood, coal, propane, heating oil, and paying electric bills for those in need,” Craiger explained. “This support is extended to individuals aged 60 and above residing in Lee, Scott, and Norton, who earn at or below 150% of the federal poverty level.”

Participants engaged in a 5K walk along the Greenbelt Trail, united by a shared goal to achieve this year’s ambitious $200,000 fundraising target. For many, the cause hits close to home, providing a strong personal incentive to contribute.

“We know a lot of elderly people that are in need, and we want to try to help,” said participant Lola Shell.

“We’re very privileged to be able to do that. And we’re thankful for this every year so that we can participate in it. And it’s good for the community,” added her husband, Steve Shell.

Some of the people who benefit from the program were also at the event, including Patricia Flinders, a 61-year-old Wise County resident. Flinders told News Channel 11 she got involved in a car accident years ago, leaving her in need of assistance.

“MEAC, it seemed like I fit in there you know, with the seniors,” Flinders said. “And it’s made such a incredible difference in my life.”

Others say the assistance is critical when living on a fixed income.

“When you lived on a fixed income, you don’t realize what it is until you do live on that fixed income,” said Cheryl Robinson, 65. “You don’t have enough money to pay for your bills; food, medication–so I’m glad that I finally got the help that I need.”

So far, more than $138,000 has been raised as of Sunday afternoon. Donations are accepted year-round, with program services beginning November 1st.

Organizers say every dollar brings them closer to ensuring no senior in the community is left without heat this winter.

Rudy Giuliani’s Health Scare: Latest Updates on His Hospitalization Status Revealed

Rudy Giuliani, the former mayor of New York City, has been admitted to the hospital but remains in stable condition, according to a spokesperson’s statement to The Hill on Sunday.

“Mayor Rudy Giuliani is currently hospitalized and is in a critical yet stable state. Known for his resilience, Mayor Giuliani has consistently faced life’s challenges with remarkable determination, and he continues to draw upon that strength now. We ask for your prayers for America’s Mayor, Rudy Giuliani,” stated Ted Goodman, Giuliani’s spokesperson.

The specific reason for Giuliani’s hospitalization has not been disclosed.

On Sunday, former President Trump expressed his support for Giuliani, who was an adviser and personal attorney during Trump’s first presidential term.

“Our incredible Rudy Giuliani, a true fighter and hands down the greatest mayor New York City has ever seen, is hospitalized and in critical condition,” Trump shared. “It’s a tragedy that he was so mistreated by the Radical Left and Democrats. Rudy was right about everything! They manipulated the elections, concocted countless stories, did anything to damage our nation, and now, look at Rudy. It’s truly sad! President DONALD J. TRUMP”

Giuliani, 81, was disbarred from practicing law in Washington, D.C., and New York for making false claims about the 2020 presidential election. He was also forced to give up his assets to pay the election workers he defamed.

Trump pardoned him last year.

Trump Pledges U.S. Support to Secure Safe Passage for Ships in Strait of Hormuz

On Sunday, President Donald Trump announced that the United States would step in to help release ships trapped in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital artery for the global oil trade, which has been obstructed amid ongoing tensions with Iran.

In a statement shared on Truth Social, Trump noted, “Nations worldwide, most of which are not embroiled in the evident and violent conflict in the Middle East, have approached the United States for assistance. These ships, caught in the Strait of Hormuz, have no stake in the dispute—they are simply neutral and innocent bystanders!”

Trump further elaborated on the U.S.’s role, stating, “For the benefit of all parties involved—Iran, the Middle East, and the United States—we have assured these countries that we will guide their ships safely out of these restricted waterways, allowing them to resume their activities without hindrance.”

Dubbed “Project Freedom” by Trump, this initiative is set to commence on Monday morning, according to Middle Eastern time zones.

The Iranian military’s restrictions on shipping through the Strait of Hormuz have stemmed from its conflict with the U.S. and Israel, leading to increased oil prices. Reports from AAA highlight that the average cost of gasoline in the U.S. has risen to approximately $4.45 per gallon, compared to about $3.17 a year ago.

The conflict against Iran just stretched into its second month, with polls showing widespread disapproval of the fighting among Americans. Trump’s disapproval rating recently reached a new high in a recent poll, with 62 percent of Americans disapproving of the president.

On Sunday, White House National Economic Council Director said that energy shocks from the conflict with Iran would affect airline profits for at least a quarter.

“Certainly, it’ll affect profits for the airlines for a quarter or so, but they’re very, very healthy right now,” Hassett said in the wake of Spirit Airlines’ decision to cease operations.

Jordon Hudson’s Hilarious Take on Bill Belichick’s Relationship Sparks Social Media Buzz

0

Jordon Hudson recently made a light-hearted joke about her relationship with Bill Belichick, which often finds itself under the public’s microscope. The couple was in the spotlight as they attended the Kentucky Derby over the weekend.

Hudson, a 25-year-old cheerleader, and Belichick, a 74-year-old University of North Carolina coach, marked their first appearance together at Churchill Downs. They showcased their affection during both the Kentucky Oaks and the Kentucky Derby events.

On Saturday, Hudson took to Instagram to share a snapshot of their time at the annual racing spectacle. The image captured the couple holding hands as they navigated the muddy terrain near the track, perfectly encapsulating their Derby experience.

In her post, Hudson seized the opportunity to humorously address the attention surrounding her relationship with the iconic football coach, especially given the buzz it has generated.

‘Not the first time we’ve trudged through the mud together,’ she captioned the post with a nod to the highs and lows their romance has endured.

Since they began dating in 2024, the couple has faced considerable scrutiny due to their significant 49-year age difference. Yet, they appear to handle the public interest with grace and good humor.

They first reportedly encountered each other on a flight from Boston to Florida in February 2021 when Belichick signed one of 25-year-old Hudson’s textbooks.

But when CBS Sunday Morning’s Tony Dokoupil dared to ask about their first meeting last year, he was met with Hudson’s fury in a now-infamous interview in April 2025.

It also emerged earlier that month that Hudson had been pleading with the University of North Carolina to censor social media comments about the couple’s relationship.

Shortly after, in July, the Daily Mail revealed that the university was facing a tidal wave of backlash from alumni, donors and faculty, who said the age-gap relationship is eclipsing Belichick’s coaching debut – and tarnishing UNC’s reputation.

While the headline-grabbing couple have drawn media attention since they went public in 2023, emails obtained through a public records request exposed the internal uproar over what critics had been calling a ‘disgrace’ and a ‘circus.’

Despite hiring the most successful NFL coach of all time, UNC failed to qualify for this season’s College Football Playoffs, with a defeat to NC State meaning they finished 4-8 and missed out on a bowl game for the first time since 2018.

Hudson has also failed to win over the iconic football coach’s family over the past two years, with his daughter-in-law Jen even confronting her publicly at a North Carolina game last season. Belichick’s friends have also reached out to express concerns over the level of ‘control’ Hudson is enjoying over him.

It’s claimed that Jen Belichick – who is married to Bill’s son, Steve – branded Hudson ‘bats*** crazy ‘ and accused her of ‘f***ing twisting’ the brain of her 74-year-old boyfriend. She also screamed that all Hudson ‘does is control s***,’ the New York Post reported.

Jen Belichick reportedly attacked Hudson over her fashion choices and her body, telling the 25-year-old cheerleader: ‘You also need to eat a burger.’

Hudson, Belichick and his son were all in the room and the Post claims that Jen Belichick had been left ‘furious’ by an interaction she had with Hudson earlier that day.

Steve Belichick works under his father as the defensive coordinator of the Tar Heels.

But, according to reports, his wife insisted she did not care if her attack on Hudson led to Belichick disowning her or even firing his son. She and Steve Belichick have been married for several years.

UK Maritime Agency Reports Small Craft Assault on Cargo Ship Near Strait of Hormuz

0

A significant maritime incident occurred on Sunday when a large cargo vessel was assaulted by numerous small crafts near the Strait of Hormuz, approximately 11 nautical miles from Sirik, Iran. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations center provided this information, highlighting the region’s volatile nature.

The captain of the northbound bulk carrier communicated the attack to the UKMTO, which assured that the crew members were unharmed and there was no environmental damage. Authorities are currently investigating, and ships in the vicinity have been advised to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities.

This attack took place in one of the globe’s most critical maritime chokepoints, amidst escalating tensions surrounding Iran’s assertions of control over the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian state media disclosed that Tehran’s recent peace proposal to the United States involves Iran’s desire to manage and oversee the strait.

Ali Nikzad, the deputy speaker of Iran’s parliament, declared on Sunday, “What is certain is that we will not step back from the Strait of Hormuz, and it will not return to its pre-war state.”

The location is significant because territorial waters generally extend up to 12 nautical miles from a nation’s coastline. But under international maritime law, foreign-flagged vessels are allowed innocent passage through territorial seas so long as they are not engaging in threatening conduct, fishing or other prohibited activity.

The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea says coastal states may claim a territorial sea up to 12 nautical miles, while foreign vessels are allowed “innocent passage” through those waters.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for Sunday’s attack. The vessel was not publicly identified in the initial UKMTO alert.

Iran has previously used fast-attack boats to harass or seize vessels in and around the strait. Sunday’s incident follows a series of maritime attacks in the region during the ongoing conflict involving Iran, the U.S. and Israel, with commercial shipping repeatedly caught in the middle.

The Strait of Hormuz connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and is a key route for global energy shipments. The U.S. Energy Information Administration has described it as a critical oil chokepoint, and roughly one-fifth of global petroleum liquids consumption moved through the strait in recent years.

The UKMTO alert did not say whether the small craft were Iranian, and authorities were continuing to investigate.

United Flight’s Newark Landing Incident: Aircraft Contacts Light Pole on New Jersey Turnpike, Reports FAA

NEWARK, N.J. – A United Airlines jet experienced a close call at Newark Liberty International Airport on Sunday when it collided with a light pole situated on the nearby New Jersey Turnpike, prompting an investigation by federal authorities.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reported that the incident occurred around 2 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time. The Boeing 767, operating as United Airlines Flight 169, had just completed its journey from Venice, Italy, and had landed safely.

In a statement from United Airlines, it was noted that Flight 169 made contact with a light pole during its final approach to Newark.

“Despite the contact, the aircraft landed without issues, taxied to the gate as usual, and thankfully, no passengers or crew members suffered any injuries,” the airline stated.

United Airlines also mentioned that their maintenance team is currently assessing the extent of the damage to the aircraft. Additionally, the flight crew has been placed on leave as the airline conducts a thorough investigation into the flight safety protocols.

The National Transportation Safety Board said in a statement posted on X that it had opened an investigation of the incident. It said an NTSB investigator would arrive in Newark on Monday and that it had directed United to provide the cockpit voice recorder and the flight data recorder for the investigation. A preliminary report was expected within 30 days, it said.

Tragic Disease Outbreak Claims Three Lives on Atlantic Cruise Ship

0
Three people have died and another is in intensive care in South Africa after a suspected outbreak of the rare but deadly hantavirus on a cruise ship sailing in the Atlantic Ocean.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) said that of the six people on the ship exhibiting symptoms, only one of the cases had been confirmed on the vessel.
Associated Press, citing reports from South African media, said the ship was the MV Hondius, sailing from Argentina to Cape Verde, a small island nation off the coast of West Africa.

The ship is currently stationed at Cape Verde.

People can become infected with Hantavirus through exposure to rodents’ urine or faeces, and the disease can also spread from person to person, though this is rare.

Initial symptoms of the illness include tiredness, fever, and muscle aches, but it can escalate to severe respiratory conditions and potentially be fatal.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has announced that thorough investigations are underway, which involve additional lab tests and epidemiological studies. Medical support is being extended to both passengers and crew, according to a statement released on X.

The WHO further stated that efforts are in motion to evacuate two passengers displaying symptoms from the vessel, while also providing assistance to those remaining on board.

The MarineTraffic global shipping website identified the vessel as a Dutch-flagged passenger cruise ship. It said it was docked in Praia, the capital of Cape Verde, on Sunday night.

The first casualty was a 70-year-old man who passed away on the ship; his body was removed in Saint Helena, a British territory in the South Atlantic. According to South Africa’s Department of Health, the man’s wife collapsed at a South African airport while attempting to board a flight back to the Netherlands and later died in a nearby hospital.

The first victim was a 70-year-old man who died on the ship and whose body was removed in the British territory of Saint Helena in the South Atlantic, South Africa’s Department of Health said in a statement. The man’s wife collapsed at an airport in South Africa trying to take a flight to her home country of the Netherlands, the department said. She died at a nearby hospital.

The department identified the patient in intensive care in a hospital in Johannesburg as a British national.

It said that person fell ill near Ascension Island, another remote island in the Atlantic, after the ship left Saint Helena and was transferred from there to South Africa.

Around 150 tourists were onboard the ship at the time of the outbreak, South Africa’s health department said. Several online tour operators said the Hondius, which is described as a specialist polar cruise ship, usually travels with around 70 crew members.

South Africa’s National Institute for Communicable Diseases, meanwhile, was conducting contact tracing in the Johannesburg region to identify if other people were exposed to the infected passengers in South Africa.

MV Hondius is operated by Oceanwide Expeditions, a Dutch travel company that offers cruise packages that explore the Arctic and Antarctic regions of the world.

Hantavirus are a group of viruses that can impact people, though there have been no human cases recorded in Australia.

The virus is found all over the world, including in Asia, Europe and the USA.

It gained attention last year after the late actor Gene Hackman’s wife, Betsy Arakawa, died from hantavirus infection.

Hackman died around a week later at their home from heart disease.

The virus can cause a severe and sometimes deadly lung infection called hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, according to the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention.

There is no specific treatment or cure for hantavirus infections, but early medical attention can increase the chance of survival.

Florida Man Faces Execution for Infamous 1996 Duval County Baby Murder

0

In a significant development from Florida, Governor Ron DeSantis has authorized the execution of Andrew Richard Lukehart, convicted for the tragic murder of a 5-month-old infant over three decades ago. The execution is scheduled for June 2026, marking a somber milestone in a case that has lingered in the public consciousness for many years.

The case dates back to 1996 in Duval County, where Lukehart was found guilty of the first-degree murder of Gabrielle Hanshaw, his girlfriend’s daughter. The jury delivered a 9-3 verdict in 1997, leading to his death sentence. This decision was rooted in the horrifying details that emerged during the investigation, painting a grim picture of the events leading to the infant’s death.

The crime unfolded in February of that year when Lukehart initially reported an abduction, claiming an unknown assailant had taken Gabrielle from his home. However, this narrative quickly unraveled. Under pressure from the investigation, Lukehart confessed that the abduction story was a fabrication. He then led authorities to a pond near Normandy Boulevard, where they discovered the child’s body, tragically confirming the worst fears.

As the execution date approaches, this case remains a poignant reminder of the enduring pain of such a loss and the long arm of justice that seeks closure, even decades later.

This story continues below.

According to the arrest report, Lukehart called police that February, reporting that Gabrielle had been abducted from his home by an unknown suspect. During the investigation, Lukehart admitted that he lied about the abduction and led police to her body, which had been thrown in a pond near Normandy Boulevard.

Although initially claiming he had accidentally dropped Gabrielle on her head and disposed of her body in a panic, he testified at trial that he had “forcefully and repeatedly pushed her head and neck to the floor” because she wouldn’t lie flat while he attempted to change her diaper, according to court documents.

The case has faced pushback in appeals from Lockhart’s defense, which previously attempted to have the sentence reduced when Florida required a unanimous death recommendation from a jury for it to be imposed. That requirement was rescinded in 2023, when the state ruled an 8-4 jury recommendation was sufficient. The defense also argued that Lockhart’s use of multiple medications, including an anti-psychotic, during the trial may have caused confusion and made him give false testimony about the manner of Gabrielle’s death.

His death sentence was upheld by the Florida Supreme Court. Lockhart could be executed as soon as June 2, barring a stay of execution order.

Six people have been executed in Florida so far in 2026. A record 19 inmates were executed by the state in 2025.

Alleged Surgical Mistakes in Hernia Procedure Lead to Fatal Constipation, Lawsuit Claims

Inset: Laura Belt (Tharp Funeral Home and Crematory). Background: The Iowa hospital where Laura Belt had the hernia repair surgery that led to her death (Google Maps).

In Iowa, a surgeon and two registered nurses are facing legal action from the family of a woman who passed away following what was supposed to be a routine hernia repair. The lawsuit claims that she was suffering from an infection and severe constipation, symptoms that were dismissed by medical staff as “normal,” leading to her tragic demise.

The victim, 46-year-old Laura Belt, died from complications related to a bowel perforation, which resulted in sepsis. These critical issues were allegedly overlooked by the medical team at Decatur County Hospital, as reported by the Iowa Capital Dispatch.

The family’s lawsuit, as detailed by the independent news outlet, charges Dr. Edwin Vincent Wehling of Leon, along with nurses Brandi Oesch and Tammy Roberts, with medical malpractice in connection to Belt’s death in May 2024.

Adding to the gravity of the situation, an April 2026 order from the Iowa Board of Medicine, reviewed by Law&Crime, accused Dr. Wehling of “professional incompetency” and conducting himself in ways deemed “harmful and detrimental to the public.”

According to board records, Dr. Wehling was serving as a surgeon at Decatur County Hospital during Belt’s surgery. Her family asserts that he was responsible for the operation while nurses Oesch and Roberts managed her postoperative care. The hospital itself is also named in the lawsuit, reflecting the family’s belief that multiple parties failed in their duty of care.

According to the complaint, Belt reported feeling “very uncomfortable” and “very anxious and tearful” after the surgery as she suffered from “constant drainage” of a “brown liquid” pouring out of her incision site. The liquid was deemed to be stool, which the nurses said was nothing to worry about, per the complaint, and Belt was discharged from the hospital a week after the hernia procedure.

Belt allegedly told hospital staff she had not had a bowel movement since the surgery.

“Consulted with Brandi, she states all is normal,” Roberts texted Belt on May 9, 2024, after she sent the nurse a photo of her incision site, which was still leaking a little over a week after she was discharged, according to the complaint.

“Brandi stated incision will drain like this for at least a month,” Roberts allegedly said.

Belt’s family alleges that she had a video call with Oesch the following day and showed her the wound, but she failed to advise Belt that she should seek emergency medical care, according to the Iowa Capital Dispatch.

On May 11, 2024, Belt was taken to Wayne County Hospital’s emergency department in an ambulance and her incision site allegedly showed signs of necrotic tissue along with the same “constant drainage” of stool. She was diagnosed as being in septic shock related to an infection stemming from her hernia repair, the complaint says.

Two days later, Oesch allegedly added a back-charted entry into Belt’s electronic medical record at Decatur County Hospital saying she had the video call with Belt and indicated that Belt was crying and experiencing problems with the incision site.

Oesch went on to write, “This nurse advised I would call Dr. Wehling and advise. This nurse notified Dr. Wehling and he requested (the antibiotic) Bactrim to be started,” according to the complaint. But the Bactrim prescription was allegedly never ordered.

Belt died on May 15, 2024. The Iowa Capital Dispatch reports that Wehling, Oesch and Roberts have all denied any wrongdoing. Wehling has reportedly claimed that the cause of Belt’s injuries and complications “may have been a pre-existing medical condition and/or a subsequently occurring medical condition for which (he) is not responsible,” per the Dispatch.

A trial has been set for Aug. 23.
