Revitalize Your Muscles After 55: 4 Standing Exercises That Outperform Gym Machines

Forget the machines: Discover four standing exercises that can help restore muscle tone after the age of 55.

Muscle tone doesn’t vanish overnight once you hit 55. Instead, it gradually diminishes as muscles stop receiving regular and effective tension. While gym machines provide guided movements, they often minimize the need for stabilization, which can limit muscle engagement. As a coach with years of experience working with clients in this age group, I’ve found that the quickest improvements come from incorporating standing exercises. These exercises compel the body to balance, control, and generate force simultaneously, making them much more effective for restoring muscle tone than isolated machine workouts.

Standing exercises engage multiple muscle groups simultaneously. They demand the cooperation of your legs, core, and upper body, which heightens overall muscle activation. By relying on your body’s natural ability to stabilize and strengthen, you create a system that encourages the return of real muscle tone.

Consistency is key. These exercises are simple enough to do daily, ensuring that muscles are regularly challenged. Over time, this consistent effort results in noticeable gains in strength, control, and muscle definition.

Consistency plays a major role here. These exercises feel accessible enough to perform daily, which keeps muscles under regular tension. Over time, that steady activation leads to visible improvements in strength, control, and definition.

The following exercises target the entire body while reinforcing posture and coordination. Stand tall, move slowly, and focus on keeping your muscles engaged from start to finish.

Standing Sit-Back to Drive

This movement rebuilds lower-body strength while reinforcing proper hip mechanics. I use it frequently because it trains the glutes and quads to generate force without placing unnecessary stress on the knees. Many people lose this movement pattern over time, which limits strength and reduces overall muscle tone.

Pushing the hips back creates a deep stretch through the glutes, while driving back to standing forces those muscles to contract powerfully. Moving slowly keeps the muscles under tension longer, which increases effectiveness. Over time, this restores strength and control through the lower body.

How to Do It

  • Stand with feet shoulder-width apart
  • Push your hips back as if sitting
  • Keep your chest lifted
  • Drive through your heels to stand
  • Repeat with control.

Standing Cross-Body Knee Drives

This exercise combines core strength, coordination, and balance. I rely on it because it forces the body to stabilize while producing controlled movement across the midline, something machines rarely train effectively.

Driving the knee across the body activates the obliques and lower abs while the standing leg stabilizes. Holding briefly at the top increases time under tension and improves muscle engagement. Over time, this builds tone through the core and hips.

How to Do It

  • Stand tall with hands near your chest
  • Lift one knee across your body
  • Hold briefly at the top
  • Lower slowly
  • Alternate sides.

Standing Calf Raises With Extended Hold

Calf strength plays a major role in overall muscle tone and movement efficiency. I’ve seen many clients overlook this area, only to struggle with endurance and stability later. That’s why this movement remains a staple, it rebuilds strength where it matters.

Rising onto your toes and holding at the top forces the calves to stay fully engaged. Lowering slowly increases time under tension and improves control. Over time, this leads to stronger, more defined lower legs.

How to Do It

  • Stand tall with feet hip-width apart
  • Rise onto your toes
  • Hold for 3–5 seconds
  • Lower slowly
  • Repeat steadily.

Standing Arm Drive With Core Engagement

This final movement ties together upper-body tone and core stability. I often finish routines with this exercise because it reinforces coordination while keeping the muscles under continuous tension.

Driving the arms in a controlled motion forces the shoulders and core to stay engaged. Moving slowly ensures the muscles don’t relax between reps, which increases effectiveness. Over time, this helps restore tone through the upper body and midsection.

How to Do It

  • Stand tall with arms at your sides
  • Drive your arms forward and back
  • Keep your core tight
  • Move with control
  • Continue steadily.

Liverpool and Man United in Tug-of-War for Bundesliga Sensation Yan Diomande: From Amateur Player to Potential Salah Successor in Just Three Years

Just a few years ago, Yan Diomande was playing amateur football in the United States, far from the global spotlight. Fast forward to today, and at 19 years old, he carries a staggering €100 million valuation and has captured the attention of top clubs like Liverpool, Manchester United, and Bayern Munich.

As Diomande prepares for a summer return to the States, the stage is set for him to make a significant impact for his country at the World Cup. This tournament could be another pivotal moment in his burgeoning career, reminding the world of the talent first glimpsed when he burst onto the scene at just 15.

For those who have watched his journey from a shy, young Ivorian to a Bundesliga sensation and a potential heir to Mohamed Salah at Anfield, one thing stands out: his resilience and determination.

Born in the Sicogi neighborhood of Abidjan, Diomande faced significant challenges growing up. With no father in the picture and his mother struggling with health issues, even basic necessities like football boots were out of reach.

Despite his introverted nature, which saw him break down in tears during initiation rituals at the academy, Diomande was resolute in his ambition. He left home with a singular goal: not just to play professionally in his own country, but to shine on the world stage with one of the biggest clubs in football.

It was his performances at the Under-17 Africa Cup of Nations, a tournament always teeming with scouts, that brought him to the Florida sun.

‘We felt like this was a player that we needed to bring over,’ explains Eason, then director of the DME Academy, a private institution based in Daytona Beach. ‘There were a lot of people already looking at him. But I think it was our approach to get him out of Africa so that he could get even greater exposure with European clubs (that persuaded him to join). We were lucky to have him.’

Diomande, then only 15, made the move alone from Abidjan to Florida despite not speaking a word of English (he would later pick it up through Duolingo). And the roadblocks kept coming. In his first game for DME, Diomande became a target for opponents who wanted to rough him up. He was sent off for retaliating, unable to control his emotions.

‘Adjusting to the game here was tough, because he ended up being a target and a lot of the teams we played just went after him,’ Eason adds. ‘He would always retaliate and didn’t understand how to control his emotions. He was kind of reckless at first and then settled down.’

The tricky winger soon realised he wasn’t going to get the fouls he thought he deserved. He had to toughen up quick.

‘That was one of the things we changed from day one,’ says Eason. ‘When he would get barely touched, he would flop and fall down and whine and cry and I just never had patience for it.

‘He saw that and just stopped doing it. There had been plenty of times he got knocked down early on and would stay on the ground whining, but I just wouldn’t tolerate it. He knew that and he wasn’t getting calls anyway, so he changed that and said, “I can’t get away with this – let’s move on to the next thing”.

‘That’s one thing he learned here, that sometimes life can be unfair. And he’s OK with that.’

Diomande was quick, unselfish, an elite finisher, quiet off the pitch but finding a swagger on it. And no matter the difficulty of DME’s opponents, he was always the best player on the pitch.

En route to an undefeated season in 2022 where Diomande was the best player, Eason organised games against professional teams purely to see how the youngster would fare in sink-or-swim situations.

Diomande’s name was well known in the high school circuit by this point and Eason needed another level to test him at, this time loaning him to DME’s affiliate side, fourth-tier AS Frenzi. It became immediately apparent that this 16-year-old was a cut above.

‘We had everybody else try to facilitate him,’ team owner Wayne Dorman tells Daily Mail Sport. ‘You’ve got to feed him the ball and we learned that from when we had him. Just give him the ball.

‘Later on in the season, he was playing pros and he would get like three or four guys on him because they knew who he was.’

Diomande was the name on everybody’s lips. By the time he first went viral, generating more than 1.5million views after ‘assisting’ himself by playing a pass through the lines, racing on to it to then rounding the goalkeeper to score in a 7-1 win over Tennessee Tempo in July, 2023, kids had long started lining up for Diomande’s autograph.

‘We didn’t know he was so popular!’ says Dorman. ‘All the kids came up to the guy and he was just cool about it. He was like, “Yeah, I’ll take a picture”. He didn’t have a problem. When I saw the aura he had in that moment, I felt he could one day be a leader for his country.

‘Football will get him to a point where he’ll be at the top of the list, No 1. But once that’s over, I think there’s still a lot more for this guy to achieve in life.’

The Frenzi secondment had been an overwhelming success. He was named STARI Player of the Year – picked out from over 5,000 players – and trial offers flooded in.

Bournemouth, Chelsea, Crystal Palace and Rangers were all immediately keen. Multiple MLS clubs had a look but decided against offering terms, to the surprise of Eason.

A move to Rangers was foiled due to agent demands, while the player chose La Liga side Leganes over Chelsea due to concerns over his playing time in England, despite not speaking any Spanish and having to navigate the emotions around the sudden passing of his sister.

By now he was extremely resilient, not to mention a fast learner. Just a month after joining Leganes’ reserve team, with Duolingo back in overdrive, he made his professional debut away to Real Madrid and never looked back, pitching up at RB Leipzig within six months in a £17.5m move.

Diomande wasted no time in becoming a star in Germany, with his treble in a 6-0 win over Eintracht Frankfurt last December making him the second-youngest player in Bundesliga history to score a hat-trick.

What both Eason and Dorman did express during our chats was concerns about those helping Diomande navigate his career.

It was Maxidel Management that took him from Leganes to RB Leipzig but earlier this year, Roc Nation announced they were representing him. That was followed up by Maxidel Management insisting it is they who continue to manage the young Ivorian, a complicated situation which needs a resolution ahead of a potentially lucrative summer window.

Liverpool are seeking a quick, versatile forward as part of their post-Salah rebuild, while United are keen on adding a left-sided player as they pivot back to a system that relies on wing play. Liverpool feel their strong relationship with the Red Bull group, who are still determined to convince Diomande to sign a bumper new deal, gives them the edge.

And whoever does secure his services may need to get in quick before the World Cup. Diomande has three goals in his first nine caps for the Ivory Coast, and will look to showcase his talents this summer against Germany, Ecuador and Curacao in Group E. Play a starring role in leading the Elephants to the knockout stages for the first time and that €100m (£87.3m) price tag will sky-rocket.

But Dorman has a word of warning for any of his summer suitors. ‘He can’t just be a guy,’ he explains. ‘Liverpool have got a lot of talented players. But you can’t make Yan be the third option. Leipzig use him right now where he’s the first option and if he’s not scoring, he’s creating. They use him correctly.’

Eason, a father figure who still calls Diomande once a month to ‘keep him grounded’, is adamant that the best is yet to come from the 19-year-old.

‘I don’t know what his true level is, what his true ceiling is, and that’s what’s so exciting – he always steps up to the level and goes beyond it,’ he says.

‘There hasn’t been a level so far that I’ve seen where he is just an average player for the league. He just keeps excelling. That’s the scary thing about this kid – we still don’t know what his potential is.’

Valerie Bertinelli’s Love Life: Why Her Black Cat is the Only Bed Companion She Needs

Valerie Bertinelli recently shared insights into her current romantic life, revealing her bedtime companion.

During a screening of her latest film, Love, Again, on April 30 in North Hollywood, the 66-year-old actress candidly discussed her personal life with Pause Rewind on the red carpet. Reflecting on her split from ex-boyfriend Mike Goodnough in November 2024, Bertinelli remarked, “2024 drained me.” She continued with a humorous note about her new sleeping partner: “I share my bed with a black cat. That sums up my life perfectly, and I adore that 11-pound ball of fur.”

Speaking outside the Television Academy’s Saban Media Center, she emphasized that the idea of dating is currently unappealing to her, joking that her feline friend, “Batman,” is the only company she desires.

Bertinelli’s openness follows her memoir, Getting Naked: The Quiet Work of Becoming Perfectly Imperfect, published in March, where she confessed her enduring affection for her late ex-husband Eddie Van Halen. The couple was married from 1981 until their separation in 2001, finalizing their divorce six years later. Van Halen passed away at 65 in 2020.

Addressing her recent breakup with Mike Goodnough, Bertinelli took to Instagram on March 3, expressing gratitude for the positive impact he had on her life. “I am forever changed for the better because of him,” she shared, reflecting on the growth she experienced during their relationship.

“We hurt each other’s feelings, but we always tried to do the right thing,” the Food Network star said of her marriage to the late musician, which saw the arrival of son Wolfgang Van Halen in 1991. “Even when we were angry, we stayed loving. It changed, evolved, and grew back different but stronger than it had been at the beginning of our relationship. It healed us.”

Once Bertinelli and Eddie’s divorce was finalized, Bertinelli went on to marry Tom Vitale in 2011. The former couple were married for 10 years before Bertinelli filed for separation in 2021. Three years later, in March 2024, Bertinelli began dating Goodnough, however the relationship dissolved by November that year.

Valerie Bertinelli Dishes on New Romance With Man From Online After Divorce- ‘I’m in Love’

Valerie Bertinelli has fallen head over heels for a new man she met online. “I’m in love,” Bertinelli, 63, told People magazine in an interview published on Monday, April 1. “It’s a seesaw of emotions because I was adamant I was never falling in love again.” The former Food Network host, who didn’t reveal her […]

In her memoir, Bertinelli stated that she “couldn’t crack the code of lasting love” over the years. “Romance has never been easy for me, never even sane,” she wrote. “It’s a messy math equation — love, marriage, divorce — and I’m terrible at math. Worse at marriage.”

Of her second marriage to Vitale, Bertinelli also revealed that its demise unfolded quite differently to that of her former union with Eddie. “How could I have continued to feel love for Ed after our divorce but have no feelings — neither good nor bad — for my second husband after fifteen years of togetherness?” Bertinelli wrote in her memoir. “Hopefully that will change over time. I can already feel myself softening. I’ve reached a point of indifference and grace, which is so much healthier than hanging on to anger.”

California Faces Challenges Over Ineffective Environmental Decisions

0

It feels like a scene straight from “Mad Max”: California receives its final, coveted barrel of Middle Eastern oil.

The shipment, carried by the Hong Kong-flagged vessel “New Corolla,” sits anchored at the Port of Long Beach. This cargo, consisting of 2 million barrels, is the last to traverse the Strait of Hormuz since the conflict erupted.

California’s reliance on oil imports from regions like the Middle East, Asia, and Latin America stems from the state’s decision to gradually cease local production.

Moreover, transporting oil from other U.S. states proves challenging, often requiring convoluted routes.

As a result, significant price surges may be on the horizon. The real challenge is about to unfold.

No doubt Democrats will blame Trump. But this was a choice — a choice made by governors Gavin Newsom, Jerry Brown, and even Arnold Schwarzenegger.

A choice to make California “green” — and therefore to make our state dependent on foreign oil, since renewables can’t yet make up the gap.

A choice that put climate change virtue-signaling above economic reality.

Newsom blames Trump for the high gas prices in California.

Yet the reality is that California’s gas prices were rising even before the Iran War — thanks to Newsom’s war on fossil fuels, including regulations that are shutting down refineries.

As the California Post reported last week, Californians can drive to Nevada for gas that is almost $3 per gallon cheaper — and they have an Iran War there, too.

Can someone who doesn’t guard his state’s energy supply be trusted as commander-in-chief? Getty Images

California also mandates a unique fuel blend that can’t be replaced easily by fuel from elsewhere.

Once, Newsom told Californians to “sober up” about the limits of green energy. He forgot to take his own advice.

Newsom clearly wants to run for president after leaving office in California. He will have to explain why he didn’t protect energy security in his own state.

Can someone who doesn’t guard his state’s energy supply be trusted as commander-in-chief?

That’s a question for voters to answer in 2028. But for now, drivers looking at pump prices will ask: How do we get out of this?

Ballots arrive in mailboxes this week. Bad choices should have consequences.

Rudy Giuliani Hospitalized: In Critical Yet Stable Condition

Rudy Giuliani, the former mayor of New York City and a prominent Republican figure, has been admitted to the hospital, according to a statement from his spokesperson on Sunday. His condition is critical but stable, as reported by The Hill.

“Mayor Rudy Giuliani is currently hospitalized, remaining in a critical yet stable state. Known for his resilience, Mayor Giuliani has confronted all life challenges with incredible strength, and he is applying that same determination now. We ask for your prayers for America’s Mayor, Rudy Giuliani,” stated Ted Goodman, who represents Giuliani.

Details on the specific cause of Giuliani’s hospitalization have not been disclosed.

Former President Donald Trump expressed his support for Giuliani, who played a key role as an adviser and personal lawyer during Trump’s presidency.

“Our incredible Rudy Giuliani, a true champion and undoubtedly the best mayor New York City has ever had, is in the hospital in critical condition,” Trump shared. “It’s tragic that he has been so mistreated by the radical left, all Democrats—AND HE WAS RIGHT ABOUT EVERYTHING! They rigged the elections, concocted countless stories, did everything to undermine our nation, and now, look at Rudy. So sad!” wrote President Donald J. Trump.

Guiliani’s lawyer, Joe Cammarata, posted a message of support for the former mayor on the social platform X.

“Pray for @RudyGiuliani. America’s Mayor needs our prayers,” Cammarata said. “Rudy is tough and resilient. He is in critical condition; if anyone can pull through this it’s Rudy. Having the honor of representing him during one of his most difficult times, I saw how strong he really is. Save Rudy!!!”

Giuliani, 81, was disbarred from practicing law in Washington, D.C., and New York for making false claims about the 2020 presidential election. He was also forced to give up his assets to pay the election workers he defamed.

Trump pardoned him last year.

Tragic Outbreak on Atlantic Cruise: Three Fatalities Linked to Suspected Hantavirus

0

IN BRIEF

  • The WHO said an investigation was ongoing but that at least one case of hantavirus had been confirmed.
  • Hantavirus infections are typically linked to exposure to the faeces or urine of infected rodents.

In a tragic turn of events aboard a cruise ship in the Atlantic, three individuals have lost their lives, as reported by the World Health Organization (WHO) on Monday. Among the deceased, one case has been confirmed as hantavirus, a rare disease typically spread to humans through contact with rodents.

The outbreak transpired on the MV Hondius, a vessel en route from Ushuaia, Argentina, to Cape Verde.

According to the WHO, “One case of hantavirus infection has been confirmed through laboratory testing, with five more suspected cases under investigation,” as they communicated to the Agence France-Presse news agency.

Out of the six individuals affected by this outbreak, three have succumbed to the illness, while another person is currently receiving intensive care treatment in South Africa.

Earlier in the day, South Africa’s health ministry informed Agence France-Presse about an outbreak of a “severe acute respiratory illness.” This outbreak has resulted in at least two fatalities, with a third individual being treated in an intensive care unit in Johannesburg.

The patient treated in Johannesburg tested positive for a hantavirus, a family of viruses that can cause hemorrhagic fever, South African spokesperson Foster Mohale said.

What is hantavirus?

In its statement, the WHO said: “Hantavirus infections are typically linked to environmental exposure (exposure to infected rodents’ urine or faeces).”

“While rare, hantavirus may spread between people, and can lead to severe respiratory illness and requires careful patient monitoring, support and response.”

Humans can catch hantaviruses from contact with infected mice or rats, or from their droppings, or from being bitten or inhaling contaminated dust.

There are multiple types of hantaviruses in different parts of the world, with different symptoms.

Husband and wife among the dead

The first person to develop symptoms was a 70-year-old passenger. He died on board the ship and his body was currently on the island of Saint Helena, a British territory in the South Atlantic, Mohale said.

His 69-year-old wife also fell ill on board and was evacuated to South Africa, where she died in a Johannesburg hospital, he said, adding that they were not yet able to confirm the victims’ nationalities.

The third case, a 69-year-old Briton, was also evacuated to Johannesburg, where he had been treated in intensive care.

WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in a post on X that the agency was working with the ship’s operators and member states affected.

“WHO is facilitating medical evacuation of two symptomatic passengers, conducting a full risk assessment, and supporting affected people onboard,” he added.

“Rapid, coordinated action is critical to contain risks and protect public health.”

Earlier on Monday, a source close to the case, speaking on condition of anonymity, had said a Dutch couple were among the dead. The third fatality was still on board the ship.

Discussions were underway to decide whether two other sick passengers should be placed in isolation in a hospital in Cape Verde, after which the ship would continue to Spain’s Canary Islands, the anonymous source said.

What do we know about the ship, MV Hondius?

The MV Hondius is listed as a polar cruise ship on the websites of several travel agencies. It is operated by a Dutch-based tour company, Oceanwide Expeditions.

One of the cruises offers an itinerary departing from Ushuaia for Cape Verde, with stops at the islands of South Georgia and Saint Helena.

According to several online ship-tracking sites, the MV Hondius was just off the port of Praia, the capital of Cape Verde, on Sunday local time.

The vessel can accommodate around 170 passengers and has some 70 crew members.

AFP contacted the cruise operator Oceanwide Expeditions but has not yet had a reply.

Unraveling the Pizza Bomber Mystery: Chilling Clues, a Frozen Corpse, and a Lethal Collar Heist

What began as a seemingly ordinary day turned into a nightmare for pizza delivery driver Brian Wells.

Wells entered a PNC Bank with a bomb secured around his neck, part of a bizarre and deadly bank heist. This harrowing tale, which is the focus of Oxygen’s A Plan to Kill, saw Wells frantically racing against time in a desperate attempt to liberate himself from the lethal contraption.

Tragically, before he could complete the perilous scavenger hunt, law enforcement apprehended Wells. The bomb, still attached to him, detonated, fatally injuring him as it exploded through his chest.

Investigators, as they peeled back the layers of this puzzling case, uncovered what one described as a “maniacal” scheme that shocked even veteran detectives.

Retired FBI Special Agent Jerry Clark commented, “This plan just unfolded into this enormous, truly malevolent plot to kill.”

Delivery Driver Brian Wells Killed By Bomb After Robbing Bank

The bizarre story began on Aug. 28, 2003, when police received a call about a bank robbery in progress in Erie, Pennsylvania.

Police and FBI agents quickly descended on the scene and learned that a man had entered the bank wearing a bomb under his shirt.

After walking away with $8,700, the suspect—later identified as Wells—was seen in a McDonald’s parking lot before heading to the nearby eye glass store, where he was stopped by police.

“Immediately the guy said he was forced to wear the bomb and to do the robbery,” retired Pennsylvania State Police investigator David Gluth explained. “At that time, they backed away from him and started to set a perimeter up.”

By then, Clark arrived at the scene and interviewed Wells, who told him that he had been delivering two pizzas for Mama Mia’s Pizza when he was attacked by a group who instructed him to rob the bank and put the bomb around his neck.

As investigators waited for the local bomb squad to arrive, the device went off, killing Wells, who was sitting in the middle of the street with his hands cuffed behind him.

“I’ll never forget this: I watched his chest go down and it never came back up,” Clark recalled. “And I thought, ‘Oh my God, this is fatal.’ You know, this is just absolutely the worst thing I had seen.”

Was Brian Wells Involved in the Bank Robbery Plot?

As authorities tried to make sense of the disturbing chain of events, they spoke with the bank tellers, who told them that Wells had appeared “very cavalier” as he came in carrying a large black cane. At one point, he even picked up a lollipop at the counter, unwrapped it and began to eat it.

“The fact that he pulled out a lollipop while robbing the bank was such a psychology dichotomy for me,” Clark said. “How could you be that calm knowing that you had a live device around your neck?”

Given the behavior, investigators began to suspect that Wells may have had knowledge of the plan.

Investigators Unravel Details of Complex Scavenger Hunt Linked to Brian Wells’ Death

Authorities also recovered a nine-page, highly detailed letter that Wells had given to the bank teller, instructing her to give him $250,000 in cash—an amount far greater than the bank actually had on hand—or he’d detonate the bomb.

After getting less than $10,000, he walked out of the bank.

During a search of his vehicle, investigators recovered the cane and realized that it had been specially created to fire a 12-gauge shotgun round that was hidden inside.

They also found a canvas bag with the money and a series of notes.

“They were instructions to Mr. Wells to rob the bank as a bank hostage and then go on a series of stops like a scavenger hunt to unlock the collar around his neck,” Clark explained. “The first site was to go to the McDonald’s, which he did, into the flower bed, turn over a stone and receive another page of notes.”

Wells was then instructed to go to the parking lot of the eye glass store to find a fire hydrant, tie an orange ribbon around it to signal he’d gotten the money.

“Then someone was supposed to come by in a car and pick up the money,” investigative reporter Ed Palattella, who co-wrote the book Pizza Bomber, explained. “It never got to that point.”

With Wells now dead, investigators worked on the scavenger hunt on their own, which led them from one wooded location along the roadway to another by the McKean Township sign. Although they found a torn orange ribbon near the sign, there were no other instructions, making it impossible to know whether it was the final stop or if the masterminds intended for Wells to continue.

“It was just maniacal,” Clark said, “when you think about having a human being go to sites to try to save his own life.”

Who Was Brian Wells?

Investigators discovered that before the bank robbery, Wells had led a fairly simple life. Never married, the 46-year-old loved reality television and solving puzzles in the local newspaper, which had participants follow clues to track down a key to win a prize.

“That would show me that somebody knew Brian Wells,” Gluth said, “and purposely targeted him with the scavenger hunt in the notes.”

The cane and the bomb were so well-crafted that FBI behavioral analysts concluded that someone with experience working with tools likely created both. They also believed the suspect was likely a pack rat, highly intelligent and with a possible background in engineering.

Call About a Frozen Body Provides New Clue in Brian Wells’ Death

Investigators got an unexpected break in the case on Sept. 21, 2003 when Bill Rothstein called 911 to report he had a frozen body in a freezer in his garage. Rothstein told investigators that his friend Marjorie Diehl-Armstrong had gotten into a fight with her boyfriend James Roden and shot him.

Diehl-Armstrong had a violent past, once killing a boyfriend as he laid on the couch, but she was acquitted using a battered spouse defense.

Rothstein— a shop teacher whose home was cluttered with objects—admitted to helping her put the body in the freezer, but now wanted the help of police to get it out.

According to Clark, “This case just kept getting crazier and crazier.”

While searching his home, along with uncovering Roden’s body, investigators also found a suicide note seemingly written by Rothstein that included the line “This has nothing to do with the Wells case.”

The note triggered investigators’ suspicions that Rothstein could be involved, particularly after realizing that he lived across from the tower site where the pizzas had been delivered.

What Happened to Bill Rothstein?

Diehl-Armstrong and Rothstein were taken into custody in connection to Roden’s shooting. While Rothstein was willing to talk about Roden’s death, he insisted he had nothing to do with the bank robbery.

Rothstein pled guilty to abuse of a corpse and disposing of evidence, but Diehl-Armstrong was immediately declared incompetent to stand trial in Roden’s case, preventing authorities from being able to speak with her about Wells.

To complicate matters, Rothstein died of cancer in July 2004, taking whatever he knew with him to the grave.

Then, in January 2005, Diehl-Armstrong pleaded guilty but mentally ill in Roden’s death and was given a sentence of seven to 20 years in prison.

Behind bars, Diehl-Armstrong agreed to talk with investigators and pointed them to Ken Barnes, a known crack dealer connected to Wells through a mutual acquaintance.

Around the same time, a delivery driver came forward to say he had seen Rothstein and Diehl-Armstrong together at a pay phone at a convenience store near the PNC bank the day of the robbery. Barnes was also spotted on surveillance footage inside the store that day.

Ken Barnes Revealed Complex Plot to Earn $250,000, Kill Brian Wells

Then, in 2007, Barnes agreed to cooperate with authorities, explaining that Diehl-Armstrong had been hoping to take a hit out on her wealthy father to cash in on his inheritance.

Barnes told investigators that he agreed to kill the man in exchange for $250,000. To get the money, however, Rothstein and Diehl-Armstrong created a plot to rob the bank, using a patsy—and Wells fit the bill.

Wells agreed to participate in exchange for $5,000, but Clark said he was told the bomb would be fake.

“He was never going to survive because he would never had time to accomplish all those routes he was to do,” Clark said. “That bomb was just going to detonate wherever he was in that scavenger hunt. They tricked him, they duped him, they killed him and it was horrific what happened to him.”

Investigators believe that Roden was initially part of the scheme, but was killed when he stopped cooperating.

Barnes pled guilty to using a destructive device during a crime of violence and conspiracy to commit bank robbery. He was sentenced to 22.5 years and died in prison of cancer in 2019.

Diehl-Armstrong was convicted on charges of conspiracy to commit armed bank robbery, bank robbery and using a destructive device to commit robbery in November of 2010. She was sentenced to life in prison plus 30 years and died of cancer in 2017.

Rudy Giuliani, 81, in Critical Condition: Trump Expresses Heartfelt Concerns

0

Rudy Giuliani, the former New York City mayor and a prominent supporter of Donald Trump, was admitted to a hospital in Florida on Sunday, where he remains in critical condition.

Giuliani, who gained national acclaim for his leadership in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks, is being treated for an unspecified illness. Details surrounding his condition remain limited.

“Mayor Giuliani is a fighter who has faced every challenge in his life with unwavering strength, and he’s fighting with that same level of strength as we speak,” stated his spokesperson, Ted Goodman. He added, “We do ask that you join us in prayer for America’s Mayor – Rudy Giuliani.”

The 81-year-old was last seen on a Facebook livestream Friday night, during which he was audibly coughing, raising concerns about his health.

Giuliani, 81, held a livestream on his Facebook page on Friday night where he could be heard coughing.

As it started he said: ‘My voice is a little under the weather so I won’t be able to speak as loudly as I usually do.’

President Trump called Giuliani a ‘True Warrior’ in a post on Truth Social Sunday evening.

‘Our fabulous Rudy Giuliani, a True Warrior, and the Best Mayor in the History of New York City, BY FAR, has been hospitalized, and is in critical condition,’ Trump wrote.

‘What a tragedy that he was treated so badly by the Radical Left Lunatics, Democrats ALL — AND HE WAS RIGHT ABOUT EVERYTHING!’

Trump then alluded to Giuliani’s unsuccessful mission to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.

‘They cheated on the Elections, fabricated hundreds of stories, did anything possible to destroy our Nation, and now, look at Rudy. So sad!’ Trump added.

Giuliani mostly recently chimed in on remarks made by comedian Jimmy Kimmel prior to the shooting at the White House Correspondents dinner.

Kimmel joked that the First Lady Melania Trump had a ‘glow like an expectant widow’, which sparked fury from the First Lady and the White House after the shooting.

Giuliani also gave his two cents, calling Kimmel an ‘incompetent jackass’, to which Kimmel responded saying Giuliani ‘rose from the grave to weigh in on the ongoing drama’.

In November of last year Giuliani was pardoned by Trump among other Republicans for his role in trying to overturn the election against President Biden.

The former NYC mayor gave an infamous speech outside the Four Seasons landscaping business in Pennsylvania as Trump desperately attempted to claw back the presidency.

In 2023, Giuliani filed for bankruptcy with staggering debts of $153 million owed to creditors including two Georgia election workers he defamed.

He filed court documents showing he had less than $10 million in assets after being ordered to pay $148 million in damages to election workers Ruby Freeman and Shaye Moss for claiming they tried to rig the vote for former President Joe Biden.

In the filing, Giuliani said he had between $100 million and $500 million in liabilities and $1 million to $10 million in assets.

Under the terms of the settlement he ended up reaching with Freeman and Moss he was able to keep his condo in West Palm Beach.

Former mayor of the city Eric Adams wished Giuliani a speedy recovery in a statement to The New York Post.

He said: ‘We may not always agree politically — but this moment rises above politics. On behalf of Eric Adams, we are wishing strength, good health, and a full recovery to Rudy Giuliani — a man who devoted his life to public service.’

Giuliani was elected New York’s mayor in 1993 after serving as one of the nation’s highest-profile prosecutors, taking on mobsters and crooked Wall Street traders.

He was celebrated for a widespread crackdown on crime using the ‘broken windows’ philosophy and implementing the controversial stop and frisk program.

Giuliani ran for the U.S. Senate in 2000 but abandoned his race against Hillary Clinton after being diagnosed with prostate cancer.

Top 5 Must-Watch Cyberpunk Movies That Will Transport You to a Futuristic World

The cyberpunk genre is instantly recognizable by its distinct aesthetic, characterized by a gritty mix of neon lights, sprawling megacities, corporate dominance, environmental decay, and the omnipresence of cyberspace. In many respects, these elements are integral to the genre’s identity. Although the cyberpunk style has permeated mainstream pop culture, the genre itself is not as expansive as one might assume. Cyberpunk, as a concept, hasn’t even reached its 50th anniversary, and the influential novels and films from the 1980s and 1990s continue to shape its narrative landscape today.

Television and video games have contributed notable contemporary entries to the cyberpunk canon, such as “Altered Carbon” and the video game “Cyberpunk 2077,” which is also being adapted into a live-action series. However, when it comes to films that define the essence of cyberpunk, the most iconic examples still originate from the genre’s early decades. For those new to cyberpunk, consider this a curated list of must-watch films that capture its essence. Even if cyberpunk isn’t your usual fare, these classics are worth your time. Here are five quintessential cyberpunk movies everyone should experience at least once.

No exploration of cyberpunk cinema is complete without starting with “Blade Runner.” Released in 1982, it remains one of the greatest sci-fi films of all time. Coincidentally, the same year William Gibson introduced the term “Cyberspace” in his short story “Burning Chrome,” Ridley Scott’s dystopian noir about androids fighting for freedom became a cornerstone of the genre. In many ways, the birth of cyberpunk can be traced back to 1982, with “Blade Runner” playing a pivotal role in its inception.

The film is based on a novel by Philip K. Dick, written in an earlier era of science fiction, depicting a future Earth more akin to a desolate wasteland than a decaying urban sprawl. Since cyberpunk had yet to be fully defined, “Blade Runner” lacks some of the neon-soaked elements that later became genre staples. Nonetheless, it includes enormous, polluted cityscapes, overpowering tech corporations, and the blurred boundaries of human consciousness as artificial intelligence increasingly integrates into daily life.

Blade Runner: The Final Cut

In “Blade Runner,” the character Rick Deckard, portrayed by Harrison Ford, serves as the audience’s guide through this dystopian world. However, it’s a stretch to label him the protagonist in the traditional sense. The film is one of those rare cases where viewing a later version significantly enhances the experience. “The Final Cut” is the definitive version, eliminating the clunky detective narration present in the theatrical release and making several other pivotal changes that deepen both the cyberpunk themes and Deckard’s character. Though the aesthetic plays a crucial role, Rutger Hauer’s haunting performance as the rogue android “replicant” Roy Batty stands as the film’s crowning achievement.

The Philip K. Dick novel on which the film is based comes from an earlier era of science fiction, and its future Earth is more an eviscerated wasteland than a decrepit urban jungle. As a result, and because cyberpunk as a genre had yet to be fully defined, “Blade Runner” has a bit less of the neon-glinted feel that later genre staples would adopt, but the big hallmarks are here: massive, polluted cityscapes full of dehumanizing architecture, tech corps with unchecked power, and a blurred line of human consciousness as artificial intelligence encroaches more and more onto daily life.

Android hunter Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford) is your lens into this world, but let’s not go so far as to call him the protagonist. “Blade Runner” is one of those rare instances where watching a later cut actually does matter a lot, so for the proper experience, track down “The Final Cut,” which removes the heavyhanded detective narration of the theatrical release and makes a number of other changes, emphasizing both the cyberpunk themes and the depths of Deckard’s character in important ways. Like all cyberpunk, the aesthetic is a big part of what makes this tick, but the pièce de résistance is Rutger Hauer’s soul-rending turn as escaped android “replicant” Roy Batty.

Ghost in the Shell

We can’t discuss the creation of cyberpunk without talking about the influence of ’80s and ’90s Japanese manga and anime. There are several anime films we could have chosen for this list (1988’s “Akira” is a must-see for cyberpunk fans, for example), the clear answer is 1995’s “Ghost in the Shell,” directed by Mamoru Oshii and based on the beloved manga by Masamune Shirow. If “Blade Runner” got the ball rolling in terms of the cyberpunk aesthetic, “Ghost in the Shell” picked it up and ran with it at full tilt.

Unlike “Blade Runner,” you’ll want to stick to the original version, not the “2.0” re-release, which throws in some unnecessary CGI updates that haven’t aged well compared to the original, which still looks fantastic to this day. The story is rich with ruminations on sentience, human systems, and identity, and there’s plenty of high-genre action here as well, from frenetic car chases and gunfights in open-air markets to high-rise assassinations. But it’s the moments when the film pauses for breath that it really shows off.

Every three or four minutes, the film will fall into a tableau so striking you may feel compelled to pause. These quiet shots are brought to another level by the transcendent score from composer Kenji Kawai, which blends ethereal vocalizations and classical stylings over a montage of gray cityscapes. The sky is gray in “Ghost in the Shell,” perpetually. The city is gray, and the water. Everything is metal, and the metal is rusting, and the digital billboards overlap and cram together, and it’s horrifying, and claustrophobic — and, somehow, gorgeous.

The Matrix

1999’s “The Matrix” is a curious case when it comes to cyberpunk, because it is both one of the most seminal and influential texts in the entire genre, yet it doesn’t bare the hallmark aesthetics. This is a post-apocalypse story set in a virtual reality world based on the real Earth of the late 1990s rather than a vision of the near future. Yet, the core themes and ideas here are unmistakably cyberpunk, to the point that, for many people, this is the first film they think of when discussing the genre.

If you watch “The Matrix” right after “Ghost in the Shell,” you’ll notice a lot of similarities, from the green digit aesthetic to the way Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) feels directly inspired by protagonist Motoko Kusanagi. In fact, “Ghost in the Shell” is one of the three classic anime movies that inspired “The Matrix” (with the other two being “Akira” and “Ninja Scroll”), and the Wachowskis famously used “Ghost in the Shell” footage when pitching “The Matrix.” Both films are interested in how perception defines reality and the idea of machine sentience. But “The Matrix” is more of a fable, using biblical allegory, fairy tail references, and Hong Kong-style wire work to tell its own story about revolution and the self.

The leather-and-sunglasses look of “The Matrix” left its own mark on cyberpunk (and pop culture at large), and the story of humans escaping from an AI-built virtual reality influenced a whole wave of cyberspace fiction going into the 21st century. But beyond being important to the genre, or to martial arts films and science fiction writ large, “The Matrix” is just an incredible movie, and it only gets better with every re-watch.

Johnny Mnemonic: In Black and White

The same year that “Ghost in the Shell” came out, cyberpunk fans also got a big-screen, live-action adaptation from William Gibson’s sci-fi universe — specifically, his 1981 short story “Johnny Mnemonic.” The film foreshadowed Keanu Reeves’ soon-to-be-massive role as an icon of cyberpunk, and while the reviews at the time weren’t as favorable as most of the other films on this list, time and retrospection have been kind to it.

It would be wrong to create a list of essential cyberpunk films and not have Gibson’s work represented (his novel “Neuromancer” is widely considered to be among the seminal cyberpunk texts), but beyond simply paying tribute to the godfather of the genre, “Johnny Mnemonic” is fun, and weird, and full of ’90s sci-fi style. Yes, the writing and performances can be pretty over the top, but camp and cyberpunk sometimes go hand in hand, and it plays well here. The story follows Reeves as a data courier hunted by corporate operatives during a particularly high-stakes job. The action and pacing are frenetic, capturing the essence of Gibson’s writing.

The overall aesthetic is magnified exponentially in the 2022 black and white re-release. Director Robert Longo has said that the monochrome version is more in line with his original vision, as he took inspiration from a number of black and white films, and it shows. The fantastic sets and costumes, combined with a pounding soundtrack from “Terminator” scorer Brad Fiedel, all come into sharp relief under the harsh, colorless contrast.

Dredd

There haven’t been a ton of new high-caliber cyberpunk movies over the last 20 years, with most of the biggest new additions to the genre coming in other media. But “Dredd,” the 2012 “Judge Dredd” adaptation from Pete Travis and sci-fi legend Alex Garland, absolutely fits the bill. Any story set in a place called “Mega-City One” has to qualify as cyberpunk, and it’s important to note that the whole genre isn’t just about VR and artificial intelligence. Urban neglect, ecological devastation, tyrannical regimes, mega-corporations — these are all cyberpunk too, and they form the building blocks of “Dredd.” The film itself is more in the mold of “Die Hard,” however.

Titular future super-cop Judge Dredd (Karl Urban) and his new rookie prospect Cassandra (Olivia Thirlby) enter one of the city’s titanic housing blocks only to be set upon by crime lord Ma-Ma (Lena Headey) and her enforcers. It’s a grim, gritty, bloody, and grimy action flick with a fantastic look and feel, and while it may not have all the neon that the cyberpunk genre is known for, it more than makes up for it in dystopian edge and visual flair. Sadly, we’ll likely never get a “Dredd 2,” but that doesn’t take away from “Dredd,” which ends on a satisfying note. Yes, it bombed at the box office, but, like “Johnny Mnemonic,” it’s undergone revaluation over the years and is now considered a must-watch for cyberpunk fans.

Deadly Cruise Ship Outbreak: Delayed Evacuations & Hantavirus Concerns Under Investigation

0

A tragic outbreak suspected to be caused by the hantavirus has struck a cruise ship navigating the Atlantic Ocean, resulting in the deaths of three individuals and leaving several others ill, according to a statement from the World Health Organization (WHO) shared on the platform X.

The WHO has confirmed that laboratory tests have verified one case of hantavirus infection, with an additional five cases currently under investigation. Out of these six cases, three individuals have tragically passed away, and one person is receiving intensive care treatment in South Africa.

Efforts are underway by the WHO, in collaboration with government entities and the cruise line, to facilitate the medical evacuation of two passengers showing symptoms. Meanwhile, they continue to evaluate the potential public health risk posed to those who remain on the ship.

“We are conducting detailed investigations, which include further laboratory analysis and epidemiological assessments,” the WHO stated. “Passengers and crew are receiving necessary medical care and support, and virus sequencing is in progress.”

Currently, the cruise ship MV Hondius is anchored off the coast near the port of Praia in Cape Verde as of May 3, 2026. The outbreak of severe acute respiratory illness on board has claimed two lives, and one individual is in intensive care in Johannesburg, South Africa, following a positive test result for hantavirus, as confirmed by South African health authorities.

The outbreak is linked to the m/v Hondius, a Dutch-flagged cruise ship sailing in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of West Africa.

Oceanwide Expeditions, which operates the vessel, confirmed that three passengers died during the voyage and that one passenger is being treated in intensive care in Johannesburg.

Two crew members on board also require urgent medical care, the company said.

As of late Sunday, authorities in Cape Verde had not authorized the disembarkation of passengers requiring medical treatment or broader medical screening, according to the company.

Local health officials have boarded the vessel to assess the situation but have not yet approved the transfer of symptomatic individuals to facilities on land.

“The priority of Oceanwide Expeditions is to ensure that the two symptomatic individuals on board receive adequate and expedited medical care,” the company said.

Dutch authorities are working to coordinate the repatriation of those affected from Cape Verde to the Netherlands, though the effort depends on approval from local officials, Oceanwide Expeditions said.

Hantavirus infections are typically linked to exposure to infected rodents’ urine or feces and can lead to severe respiratory illness.

“While rare, hantavirus may spread between people, and can lead to severe respiratory illness and requires careful patient monitoring, support and response,” WHO said.

There is no specific cure for the virus, though early treatment can improve survival.

WHO said it has notified global health authorities under international regulations and is continuing to support the response.

“We are currently establishing the full facts and working on appropriate medical care, screening, and next steps,” Oceanwide Expeditions said.
