Inside Sources Reveal Tensions Surrounding Jeff Bezos’ Debut at the Met Gala

0

Fashion usually takes center stage at the Met Gala, but this year, as celebrities and influential figures make their way up the iconic steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the spotlight is shifting. The focus is not on the luxurious gowns or sharp tuxedos, but rather on a particular pair of attendees who are stirring up quite the conversation.

Traditionally, the Met Gala guest list is a hot topic, meticulously curated by Conde Nast’s Anna Wintour, who has been the chairwoman of the Costume Institute benefit for over three decades. However, this year’s event breaks from its storied exclusivity as the attention turns to the individuals welcoming guests at the entrance.

According to insider sources, all eyes will be on Jeff Bezos, Amazon’s founder and tech magnate, and his wife, Lauren Sanchez Bezos. The couple has taken on the role of lead sponsors and honorary co-chairs for the evening, a move that has sparked considerable debate.

In an interview with the Daily Mail, a fashion industry insider expressed concern over the choice, saying, “It’s, quite frankly, very hurtful and very disturbing for [the Bezoses] to be the face of this year’s Met Gala, something that is really meaningful to a lot of people and to such a highly regarded and highly respected institution.”

The decision has left some feeling snubbed, with the insider noting, “It feels like a real slap in the face to a lot of people.”

Indeed, the Daily Mail has learned that, the Bezoses’ involvement has cast a shadow over the ritzy event, dubbed the Oscars of fashion for its unabashed display of opulent glamour.

According to our source, at least one A-list heavyweight has pulled out of Met Gala programming as a result.

The Daily Mail has been told that Meryl Streep – who appeared on the May 2026 Vogue cover alongside Wintour for The Devil Wears Prada 2 promotion – was rumored to have been one of the Met Gala’s co-chairs this year, but allegedly declined to do so because of the Bezoses’ bankrolling and presiding over the party as guests of honor.

Backlash against the hyper-affluent couple has been building since the November announcement. For some, Bezos’s apparent alignment with the Trump administration is simply not a good look.

Online commentators have gone as far as to label the event the ‘Jeff Bezos Nazi Met Gala’ on social media and anti-billionaire activists have plastered New York City subway stations and streets with posters calling for a boycott of fashion’s biggest night.

Internal drama is just as rampant, the fashion industry insider said, as there’s been dissent quietly brewing among those involved with planning the annual event – a fundraiser for the museum’s fashion collection.

They explained: ‘The fashion industry and the people who work in it are by and large, very liberal. Anna has always publicly supported Democratic candidates for president and Vogue endorsed Hillary Clinton and Kamala Harris. Even the politicians that we’ve seen attend the Met Gala over the years have been overwhelmingly liberal.

‘To have a couple that aligns themselves with and have contributed a million dollars to inaugurating a president who has sought to eviscerate DEI, dismantle Roe v Wade, disenfranchise Black voters and crack down on immigration in a way that is so inhumane and horrific, rubs a lot of people the wrong way.’

Not that the couple aren’t used to controversy. Their lavish June 2025 Venice wedding was met with protests, while the Bezos-owned privatized space endeavor, Blue Origin, which saw Sanchez Bezos go to space with an all-female crew in April 2025, was derided as ‘gluttonous.’

Bezos, who has a net worth of $259 billion, faced additional scrutiny for his Met Gala sponsorship amid the gutting layoffs that took place in early 2026 at the Washington Post and Amazon and saw over 16,300 people across both companies lose their jobs.

For many the Bezoses’ underwriting of the Met Gala is a less than subtle attempt to buy their way into the elite circles of the notoriously exclusive fashion industry. In recent years, their desire to be accepted within these upper echelons has been apparent.

At couture week in Paris earlier this year, they were spotted cozying up to Wintour and Dior’s creative director, Jonathan Anderson, as well as with a Vogue digital cover story in 2025 that showcased Sanchez Bezos’s Dolce & Gabbana wedding dress.

To be the main sponsors of the exorbitantly expensive Met Gala, where individual tickets clock in at $100,000 and tables go for a whopping $350,000, is perhaps the ultimate flex of their immense financial power.

According to our fashion source, the Bezoses’ roles as honorary co-chairs of the Met Gala also signals that Wintour has given them her blessing and that others in the fashion industry will follow suit – though many of them may harbor deep reservations in private.

‘The Met Gala is the most exclusive, coveted and sought after invitation on the fashion social calendar, so to have top billing on that invite as the sponsor is absolutely an embrace and a stamp of approval,’ the source said.

‘Obviously, the Met Gala is always over-the-top and wealth and grandeur is always on display, but there are two of the richest people to ever exist in the world who will be hosting it. When we’re in the midst of a war and there are so many people struggling to have their basic needs met, it’s not necessarily the image everyone wants to see.’

Amy Odell, the author of Anna: The Biography, said that the couple may be facing additional scrutiny for their outsized fiscal role.

‘The Met Gala is not normally primarily sponsored by individual donors,’ Odell told the Daily Mail.

‘It’s normally brands that take on that task to foot the bill. For the leading sponsors to be two individuals is unusual. And they’re not popular, so that’s been very controversial as for why she [Anna] went to them. Obviously, their wealth is so immense that whatever they’re spending is probably like pocket change to them.’

While the current political and economic climate is fueling increased scrutiny of the Bezoses’ financial backing, Odell said that the same economic downturn may be the very reason why Wintour decided to tap the Bezoses in the first place.

‘Why did she go to them? I can only imagine that brands are not ponying up as much – if you look at luxury brands like Kering and LVMH, fashion has been in a post-pandemic slump, so that could be why,’ Odell said.

The fashion insider agreed: ‘It’s much easier to wrap your head around a luxury brand that has been around for decades having the resources to sponsor an event like the Met Gala. But to reckon with the idea that two individuals can do it during a time like now, I think a lot of people question the ethics of that kind of wealth.’

There’s also been speculation that the changes are due to Wintour stepping down from her role as the editorial director of Vogue in late 2025 and elevating Chloe Malle to the top with the new title, Head of Editorial Content.

However, Odell, who writes about Wintour often in her newsletter, Back Row, said that Wintour’s influence, especially when it comes to the Met Gala, has not diminished in the slightest – meaning that her selection of Bezoses as the lead sponsors was intentional and considered.

Odell said: ‘The misconception that many of us have made in observing her new position at Conde Nast is assuming that it’s a step back, when, in reality, I think she may have been looking at it as passing off what no longer suited her.

‘Running a media property, where you’re hustling pageviews and coming up with events and doing social media content and looking at reports – my hunch is that she didn’t really want to do that anymore, so she assigned that to somebody else. It’s worth remembering that when Anna announced her change in role in a Vogue article, it stated that it would allow Anna to focus more on other projects like the Met Gala.’

The inside source also hinted that Malle wouldn’t be opposing Wintour’s decisions, especially when it came to the Bezoses. In fact, the fashion insider shared that Malle, who wrote both of the glowing profiles of Sanchez Bezos in Vogue, had talked in the Vogue offices about her chummy relationship with her.

'Obviously, their wealth is so immense that whatever they're spending is probably like pocket change to them,' Odell said of the Bezoses, pictured here with Wintour front row at the Tom Ford fall/winter runway show in February 2020

While Wintour has been taken to task by critics and the peanut gallery alike for making the Bezoses the lead sponsors, Odell said the outraged reactions may be more indicative as a sign of the times than of her actual co-signing of the billionaire couple themselves.

‘The sociopolitical landscape is really different today. Billionaires are not well-liked,’ Odell said.

‘Income inequality is so stark and it’s become a very political issue. Anna wasn’t up against the same climate in 2015.’

Despite her continued influence, Wintour has still faced flack in some of fashion’s inner circles. The inside source said that platforming the Bezoses is ‘hypocritical,’ given Wintour’s longtime soft power moves for Democratic politics and as her stance as a proponent of DEI, especially in the wake of last year’s Met Gala theme honoring Black style.

They said: ‘To have the 2025 Met Gala that was a celebration of the Black dandy, which was groundbreaking and historic to then, a year later, have the host be a couple who publicly supports an administration that is actively rolling back DEI initiatives and civil rights, is so disrespectful and distasteful. It makes last year’s Met Gala seem extremely performative.’

Representatives for Vogue and the Bezoses did not respond to the Daily Mail’s request for comment.

Odell, however, said that Wintour may appear to be less concerned with political affiliations than she is with her proximity to who’s currently in power.

She points out that a source for her book on Wintour, Anna: The Biography, said that the longtime editor was ‘attracted to people who are powerful,’ a currency that’s always en vogue.

Gary Neville and Roy Keane Debate Michael Carrick’s Tactical Mastery as Man United’s Interim Boss Secures Crucial Win Against Liverpool

Roy Keane has voiced his opinion that the accolades directed towards Michael Carrick have been exaggerated, as he cut into Gary Neville’s commentary to discuss the future of Manchester United’s managerial position.

Carrick took the reins as interim head coach in January after the dismissal of Ruben Amorim.

The ex-Manchester United midfielder has led the team to secure a spot in the Champions League, a feat achieved with a 3-2 triumph over Liverpool on Sunday.

Keane has consistently expressed his thoughts on Carrick’s potential future with the club. Initially, in January, he remarked that even winning all his matches wouldn’t justify a full-time appointment. However, he later reversed his stance, expressing hope that Carrick would be appointed permanently.

During a recent dialogue about Carrick’s prospects prior to Manchester United’s encounter with Liverpool, Keane interjected Neville on Sky Sports to challenge the extent of the commendations bestowed upon the interim manager.

‘He is getting praise for winning football matches, he got praised for tactically changing it on Monday night to a system where United ended up losing the second half,’ Keane said.

‘He is getting credit for that. You are 2-0 up at half-time against Brentford who have not won in five or six, they lost the second half 1-0 and he’s getting thumbs up for that.

‘That is where I draw the line, where it is a bit over the top.’

‘I think they would have lost the game had he kept the system they had in the first half,’ Neville said in response.

Keane interrupted: ‘How, the system they played in the first half they scored two goals and were 2-0 up.’

‘They were hanging on for dear life,’ Neville replied, prompting Keane to interject ‘they were hanging on at Chelsea.’

‘They have been for a few weeks, Neville admitted. ‘The performances in the last few weeks haven’t been great, that is the one thing that is important for Michael. He has got them over the line in these games.

‘I have gone on the record about whether I think Michael should get the job, what I would say is that I am unsure, but my gut feeling when he got the job was that Man United should go out and appoint a world class manager, the very best they can with a body of work with Champions League experience and league titles.

‘Michael obviously doesn’t have that, he’s been at Middlesbrough earning his trade for a few years, I don’t think we are on a different page on that. What I would say is “Who is out there right now that is available and can come in and take over from Michael?”.

‘What he has done is settle the club down on the pitch and everyone has been able to see that, there was a lot of turbulence in the club over the last 12 months.

‘I think today is big, they haven’t been playing well, there has been West Ham, Newcastle, Brentford, Leeds, Chelsea where there have been struggles there they have limped over the line.

‘Today is about making sure they win as they have got a lot more going for them on paper with the injuries Liverpool have got.’

Keane agreed with Neville’s pre-match assessment that the result could have a beating on Carrick’s future, suggesting a victory and positive performance would be a big step towards securing the job permanently.

Man United had stormed into a 2-0 lead at Old Trafford with Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko putting the hosts into a comfortable lead at half-time.

Liverpool battled back with Dominik Szoboszlai and Cody Gakpo pulling them back level, before Kobbie Mainoo scored Man United’s winner from the edge of the box in the 77th minute.

Keane claimed post-match that the ‘best and the worst’ of Man United had been on show in the match, with Carrick’s side earning praise for netting three against their rivals but expressed concern over an ‘ugly’ second half.

Savannah Welcomes Back the 48th Annual Scottish Games

SAVANNAH, Ga. — Not even a downpour could dampen the spirits of participants at Savannah’s cherished event, the 48th Annual Scottish Games, which took place on Saturday.

The celebration, hosted on the scenic grounds of Bethesda Academy, is a vibrant tribute to Celtic heritage. Attendees were treated to a day filled with live music, athletic competitions, traditional dancing, historical reenactments, authentic cuisine, and whisky tastings. According to the event’s president, the rain only added to the day’s authenticity.

“It feels like we’ve brought a piece of Scotland to Savannah,” remarked Murray Mashall. “These drizzly conditions are quite typical of Scottish weather. It’s unusual to experience this kind of cool, moist climate in Savannah, Georgia, especially in May. Our games always take place on the first Saturday of May, and usually, we face scorching 95-degree heat with no breeze. Honestly, I find this refreshing rain to be a blessing compared to the stifling heat.”

Barbie Ferreira Opens Up About Cosmetic Procedures: Why Botox Isn’t on Her List

Barbie Ferreira recently shared insights into her experiences with cosmetic treatments, detailing both what she has and hasn’t experimented with.

The 29-year-old actress opened up about her beauty routine on the “In Your Dreams” podcast with Owen Thiele on Friday, May 1. As she approaches her 30s, Ferreira expressed her willingness to explore new skincare avenues, including the use of tretinoin retinoid cream to combat aging signs.

“You’ve got to get the tret!” Ferreira enthusiastically told Thiele, who inquired if that was her sole facial treatment. “I really enjoy lasers,” she admitted, adding that she hasn’t ventured into Botox yet due to her need for facial expressiveness. “I’m genuinely apprehensive about starting Botox, but I know it’s something I might consider eventually.”

Thiele acknowledged that as an actress, maintaining the ability to convey emotions is crucial. Ferreira concurred, stating, “I’m an incredibly expressive individual, and the idea of Botox scares me. Instead, I prefer laser treatments like Potenza. At 23, I tried Morpheus 8, which was a bit extreme.” Potenza enhances skin by boosting collagen, while Morpheus 8 employs microneedling to rejuvenate collagen, tighten skin, and contour fat.

Barbie Ferreira Says Fixation on Her Body Is ‘Rage Bait’: ‘Talking About Weight Loss Is Boring’

Ferreira prides herself on her self-assurance and resists efforts to diminish her radiance. “For me, conversations around weight loss or transformations are incredibly dull,” she remarked during an episode of Amanda Hirsch’s “Not Skinny But Not Fat” podcast on Tuesday, April 14. “People seem overly fixated on these topics…”

“That’s, like, a facelift,” Ferreira explained of the powerful laser. The Euphoria star added that because the treatment is so painful, she was offered ketamine and laughing gas. “I drove here! I’m good!” she recalled saying with a laugh.

Ferreira said that she experimented with the laser because she heard that it could remove fat from her face. “So I do Potenza now. It’s a little bit less painful,” she said.

Hailey Bieber is getting real about the cosmetic procedures she’s had done — and ones she has not. “I don’t have any Botox, except for in my jaw for TMJ,” Bieber, 28, said on the Friday, October 24, episode of the “In Your Dreams” podcast, referring to a temporomandibular disorder that causes pain in the […]

The model previously made headlines last month for sharing her thoughts on feeling confident in her own skin. “To me, talking about weight loss or glowing up is so boring,” she said during an episode of the “Not Skinny But Not Fat” podcast. “I think people are just obsessed with that right now. It’ll be even a young person that just grows up and it’s like, ‘The glow up! Or the glow down!’ Everyone’s obsessed with that. She was 16, and now she’s 25.”

She continued, “It’s not just me. Every actress right now is being put under a microscope of being too skinny or too big. It’s all rage bait. If you can find something to rage bait about, it’s more effective in the algorithm.”

USF Laboratory Building Faces Potential Total Loss Following Major Fire Incident, Says University President

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — A devastating fire erupted at the University of South Florida’s Marine Science Laboratory in St. Petersburg on Saturday evening, potentially leaving the facility as a “total loss,” according to University President Moez Limayem.

In a statement released on Sunday, Limayem expressed that while a thorough assessment is still pending, initial evaluations suggest the building might be beyond recovery. “Our recovery teams are coordinating with the College of Marine Science to prioritize the salvage of crucial research materials and equipment once the building is deemed safe,” Limayem said.

The blaze, classified as a two-alarm fire, ignited around 6:30 p.m. on May 2, as reported by St. Petersburg Fire Rescue. Thankfully, the structure was evacuated promptly, and no injuries have been reported.

Authorities: Teens Accused of Offering Ride to Stranded Man Before Tragic Incident

In a tragic turn of events, three teenagers from Wisconsin have been charged with murder following the fatal shooting of a man who had accepted their offer of a ride during a rainstorm.

3 teens charged with murder

Background: News footage of the alley in Milwaukee, Wis., where David Krause was killed on April 14 (WTMJ). Inset: David Krause (Instagram).

David Krause, 35, was shot and killed in a Milwaukee alley, and now, two weeks later, three juveniles face charges of felony murder and armed robbery. According to local NBC affiliate WTMJ, one of the suspects is just 14 years old. Krause’s life was cut short on the evening of April 14, just after he had joined in the local celebrations for 414 Day, an annual event in Milwaukee.

As reported by ABC affiliate WISN, Krause was caught in a heavy rainstorm and sought refuge at a nearby gas station. He realized he had left his keys in his girlfriend’s car and informed her over the phone that he was about to catch a ride with some teenagers.

Details from a juvenile petition reveal that Krause entered a vehicle with the three teens, who then drove a short distance of about three blocks. Surveillance footage captured the moment Krause exited the vehicle, attempting to flee towards a bar, pursued by two of the teens. A confrontation unfolded, culminating in one of the juveniles allegedly shooting Krause. The teens then reportedly returned to their car, which authorities suspect was stolen, and quickly left the scene.

Prosecutors wrote in the petition that Krause got into a car with three teenagers, who drove about three blocks. Surveillance cameras captured Krause running out of a car toward a bar as two of the teens chased after him. A struggle between Krause and the two teenagers ensued until one of the teens allegedly fired a gun at Krause. The two teens got back into the car, which investigators alleged was stolen, and fled the scene.

The 14-year-old suspect was arrested and “inadvertently released,” according to reporting by WTMJ. The Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office confirmed to the outlet that he had been rearrested and taken back into custody on April 27. Information about the other two suspects has not been shared due to their juvenile status.

Krause’s family spoke to local CBS affiliate WDJT about the fatal shooting before arrests were made. Krause’s sister told the outlet, “My brother’s Achilles heel was that he blindly trusted people. He had so much faith in humanity, so much faith in the people and community in Milwaukee that he surrounded himself with, and that’s the reason why he’s not here today.”

Jaylen Brown Criticizes Joel Embiid’s ‘Flopping’ Tactics: A Heated NBA Rivalry Unfolds

0

Joel Embiid has finally managed to overcome the Boston Celtics in the postseason, much to the dismay of Jaylen Brown.

Embiid delivered a stellar performance, scoring 34 points, grabbing 12 rebounds, and dishing out six assists, leading the Philadelphia 76ers to a surprising victory over the Celtics in Game 7. The win left the Boston crowd at TD Garden stunned and silent.

In the aftermath of the Celtics’ season-ending loss, Brown expressed his frustration by accusing the 2022-23 MVP of excessive theatrics on the court. “Embiid put a lot of pressure on us, on all our bigs and our guards. We didn’t really have an answer for him,” Brown shared with reporters.

He continued, “We tried a bunch of different things. He’s a big body. He also was flopping around. He got some extra calls and they rewarded him for that, but that’s the league we’re in.”

“We tried a bunch of different things. He’s a big body. He also was flopping around. He got some extra calls and they rewarded him for that, but that’s the league we’re in.”

Brown did not reference a specific call that he had a gripe with, though Embiid shot 37 free throws in the series — including 11 on Saturday. He also missed the first three games of the series following an emergency appendectomy last month.

Brown, meanwhile, was tasked with shouldering the Celtics’ offensive load with Jayson Tatum out injured in Game 7.

He scored 33 points but needed 27 shots to get there, and also committed three turnovers.

Interestingly, Embiid and Brown were seen having a friendly embrace following the conclusion of the game.

The series win is the first time that Embiid has defeated the Celtics in the playoffs after defeats in the 2018, 2020 and 2023 postseasons.

Now, he’ll shift his focus to the Knicks after New York dispatched the Hawks in six games.

Chilling Crime Unveiled: Son Allegedly Disposes Mother’s Remains in Bathroom Horror

Authorities in Mississippi have arrested a man accused of attempting to flush his mother’s dismembered body parts down a toilet.

Zachary Lavel Jackson, Jr. is facing charges including murder, mayhem, and evidence tampering in connection to the death of Lana Brown Bradley. Bradley, a retired teacher, was hailed by the Adams County Sheriff’s Office as “a respected and beloved member” of the local community.

Describing the event, Adams County Sheriff Travis Patten told WJTV, “This is undoubtedly the most horrific crime I’ve encountered in my career. It’s a case that leaves an indelible mark, one that you carry with you long after the day is done.”

Deputies Discovered Zachary Lavel Jackson, Jr. Inside a Bathroom

The investigation was initiated on April 4 when the sheriff’s office received a request to conduct a welfare check at Bradley’s home in Natchez, as detailed in the sheriff’s office statement.

Upon arrival, deputies were confronted with a disturbing scene.

“As soon as they walked in the house, they could just see where somebody had been cleaning up, and they could smell chemicals all throughout the house,” Patten recounted to WJTV. “Floor was extremely slippery.”

Jackson, described as Bradley’s youngest son, was found in a locked downstairs bathroom.

“When he opened that bathroom, deputies could see a black substance in the toilet that wasn’t described as anything that would come, you know, from your body in that way,” Patten explained. “They were disturbed at what they were seeing.”

Lana Brown Bradley’s Remains Discovered in Suitcase, Toilet

Concerned, Patten ordered a search of the family’s wooded two-acre property. It was then a member of Bradley’s family allegedly stumbled upon a portion of the remains.

“The deputies heard a scream. They heard somebody, someone yelling, ‘It’s a head! It’s a head!’” Patten told the news outlet. “And of course, everything changed at that point. It was like they were frozen in time because nobody could believe what they were hearing.”

Some of the remains were discovered inside a suitcase, while parts of her flesh were found inside the toilet after a plumber was called to remove it, Patten said.

“He chopped her up in pieces,” he explained to WJTV. “He dismembered her in a way where he knew that whoever came looking for her were going to have to do their due diligence and they were going to have to go above and beyond to find her and that’s what we did.”

According to Patten, Bradley was looking into having her son evicted from the home. The day before her remains were discovered, she had gone to court to have him removed from the property, prompting Jackson to allegedly threaten her.

The sheriff’s office commended deputies and the service professionals called that day for “stepping outside of their normal scope of duties to assist when called upon.”

“From patrol deputies to investigators and our Special Operations Group, every individual played a critical role in this case,” Patten said in the statement from the sheriff’s office. “They recognized early on that this was more than a welfare check, preserved the integrity of the scene, gathered key witness statements, detained the suspect, and worked tirelessly until sufficient evidence was developed to bring charges.”

Oxygen reached out to the sheriff’s office, but did not receive an immediate response.

Jackson—who is currently being held in the Adams County Jail—waived his right to a preliminary hearing in court on April 28, according to The Natchez Democrat. The case will now be sent to a grand jury.

Oxygen reached out to Jackson’s attorney Paul Sullivan, but did not receive an immediate reply.

Rediscover Hidden Gems: Must-Watch ’60s Box Office Flops That Deserve a Second Chance

A film’s success at the box office doesn’t always reflect its artistic merit. Often, cinematic gems fail to captivate audiences financially, while less remarkable films thrive. This phenomenon was particularly evident in the 1960s, a period marked by significant shifts in film creativity and tone. During this transformative era, several exceptional films unfortunately underperformed financially, despite their brilliance.

Among these are five notable films from the ’60s, whose lackluster box office returns belied their artistic significance. The very qualities that contributed to their initial commercial struggles have, over time, cemented their status as timeless classics. Film enthusiasts should not be deterred by their financial performance; these five films are essential viewing for anyone passionate about cinema.

Marketing challenges are common for many films, and Sidney Lumet’s 1964 thriller “Fail Safe” faced an uphill battle. The movie, set against the backdrop of the Cold War, dealt with the harrowing scenario of an accidental order to bomb Moscow. During an era fraught with nuclear fears, such a grim narrative was unlikely to attract audiences seeking a lighthearted cinematic escape.

“Fail Safe” boasted a stellar ensemble cast, including Henry Fonda, Walter Matthau, Larry Hagman, and Frank Overton. However, its serious tone struggled to find a foothold, especially after the earlier success of “Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb,” which approached nuclear themes with satirical humor. As noted by Frank Miller of TCM, this prior release softened the impact of “Fail Safe,” making it less appealing as a dramatic piece.

Fail Safe

Despite its initial reception, “Fail Safe” stands as an exceptional suspense thriller. Director Lumet and editor Ralph Rosenblum expertly maintained tension while navigating between diverse settings—from war rooms to presidential bunkers to airborne pilots. This expansive narrative scope heightened the intensity, creating an edge-of-your-seat experience rather than a bloated one. Though its dark subject matter may have hindered its box office potential, “Fail Safe” ultimately solidified its legacy as a cinematic masterpiece.

“Fail Safe” had a sprawling ensemble cast to its name, which included Henry Fonda, Walter Matthau, Larry Hagman, Frank Overton, and many others. That wasn’t enough to overcome the subject matter, which had played very differently in another film not long before “Fail Safe” came out. “‘Fail Safe’ did not do well at the box office, primarily because the earlier release of ‘Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb’ blunted its impact, making nuclear warfare seem more a subject for dark humor than serious drama,” TCM’s Frank Miller writes.

That’s a shame, because “Fail Safe” is a top-shelf suspense thriller. Lumet and editor Ralph Rosenblum masterfully cut between various locales (from a war room to a bunker with the President to pilots up in the sky) without ever diluting the tension. The expansive scope just makes the central plot even more of a nail-biter rather than making the film feel bloated. Lumet’s commitment to an increasingly scary story jeopardized its financial chances but ensured “Fail Safe” emerged as a masterpiece in the long run.

The Trial

He’s known as one of the greatest filmmakers who ever lived nowadays, but Orson Welles regularly struggled to get either financing or attention for his various audacious projects. This is despite his many accomplishments, like launching his career with “Citizen Kane,” one of the best directorial debuts of all time, and delivering “Touch of Evil,” one of the 20 best noir movies ever. His arduous obstacles extended to his 1962 film “The Trial,” an adaptation of Franz Kafka’s 1925 novel of the same name. This trippy tale follows ordinary bureaucrat Josef K. (Anthony Perkins), who is inexplicably arrested and sentenced to death despite not knowing what crime he’s committed.

Despite the intriguing premise, “The Trial” bombed at the box office, making less than $10,000 during its domestic opening and ultimately pulling in less than $100,000 worldwide in total. The fact that the project ran over schedule and over budget certainly didn’t help matters, but it was ultimately Welles’ reputation that doomed the “The Trial” to failure. Welles was “at the time a pariah in Hollywood subsisting as a peripatetic filmmaker and jobbing actor in Europe,” James Chapman wrote in a piece about “The Trial” in the Historical Journal of Film, Radio and Television.

“The Trial” was never likely to be a box office smash, but it has stood the test of time. It’s an incredibly unnerving watch that unflinchingly commits to depicting a world of inexplicable, straight-faced madness. The film never pumps the brakes on the impenetrableness of Josef K’s world, which makes for an engrossing atmosphere. Anthony Perkins is captivating in his haunting lead turn, while (per usual for a Welles movie) the filmmaking is incredibly evocative. Welles and his artistic gifts were perfectly suited for making this unforgettable “The Trial” adaptation.

Seconds

One of the stars of Hollywood’s Golden Age, Rock Hudson is to this day remembered for the persistent rumors around Tinseltown that he was gay, a rumor that turned out to be true. However, he’s also remembered for his considerable skills as an actor, which were on full display in hit films such as “Magnificent Obsession,” “All That Heaven Allows” and “Giant.” Unfortunately, Hudson hit choppier box office waters when he tried anchoring more unorthodox fare in 1966 with “Seconds,” the story of an ordinary banker who undergoes a procedure to get a brand new physical appearance and identity.

The man’s new form (Hudson) initially promises exciting new possibilities only to unleash a new kind of overwhelming nightmare. This is a trippy, disorientating film that sees director John Frankenheimer and cinematographer James Wong Howe not holding back on unusual shots and camera angles, though the out-there nature of the film is not why it bombed at the box office with a reported return of $1.75 million from a $2.5 million budget.

According to Frankenheimer, the reason “Seconds” failed is that people who liked typical Rock Hudson movies weren’t interested in it and those who would ordinarily show interest in a neo-noir sci-fi psychological horror film refused to see it because it starred Rock Hudson. He once jokingly said that only “five or six people” called their local cineplexes to ask what time “Seconds” was playing, to which the staff responded: “What time can you come down?” Those who did make the trip no doubt enjoyed it, because “Seconds” is now considered to be one of the most memorable films of the 1960s.

Nothing But a Man

Roger Ebert’s litany of film reviews fascinate on so many levels, including the five unexpected sci-fi movies he gave perfect scores to. One of his greatest qualities was his championing of underseen small movies that slipped through the cultural cracks. Case in point: the 1964 grounded drama “Nothing But a Man.” This feature chronicles the romance between Duff Anderson (Ivan Dixon) and his new lover Josie Dawson (Abbey Lincoln), as well as their endless problems navigating American racism. Ebert’s review not only highlighted the film’s artistry, but also provided helpful context for why it never broke out.

Per Ebert, the film (which cost $300,000 to make) never got a proper theatrical run. “At the time its release was spotty, and today there are few people who have seen it,” he said upon revisiting the film in 1993. Because of this, “Nothing But a Man” made pennies at the box office. That’s a tragic outcome since this movie is outstanding on so many levels. There’s an unhurried, observational quality to this feature missing from default 50s/early 60s Hollywood dramas, which tended to lean towards maximalism and grandeur.

This film’s unflinching portrayal of morally complex Black characters and systemic racism allow the assembled actors to sink their teeth into riveting, nuanced roles. Abbey Lincoln, in particular, delivers unforgettable work all throughout “Nothing But a Man.” This starkly drawn production deserved a greater theatrical presence when it first opened. Thankfully, writers like Ebert kept “Nothing But a Man” and its accomplishments on people’s radars in the decades that followed.

The Children’s Hour

With LGBTQIA+ representation in modern movies alarmingly low, the constant struggle to get queer stories into American cinema rages on. In some ways, 2020s motion pictures mirror the 1960s, when queer material existed only in subtext and hints. Into this domain walked director William Wyler’s “The Children’s Hour,” an adaptation of Lillian Hellman’s 1934 play of the same name. It follows boarding school teachers Martha Dobie (Shirley MacLaine) and Karen Wright (Audrey Hepburn), who get on the wrong side of adolescent bully Mary Tilford (Karen Balkin). The malicious child spreads a rumor that Wright and Dobie are gay lovers, an accusation that immediately makes the two women social pariahs and dooms their business. Given the modern world’s targeting of queer and trans educators, the story of “The Children’s Hour” remains chillingly relevant.

The film commits to a bleak atmosphere emphasizing the quietly brutal ramifications of prejudice. This is an aching, often haunting movie that’s hard to shake off. Hepburn and MacLaine are magnificent portraying their respective characters responding to their turmoil. They’re both so richly human and compelling. Unfortunately, those qualities weren’t enough to make “The Children’s Hour” a financial success. According to Tino Balio’s book “United Artists: The Company That Changed the Film Industry,” the film cost $3.6 million to make and ended up losing $2.8 million. At the time, Variety said that the movie likely failed because “the sophistication of modern society makes the events slightly less plausible” compared to the era of the play. Little did the writer know that society would still be struggling to accept such stories in the 2020s.
