Breaking News: Intense Blaze Triggers Hazmat Alert at USF St. Pete Science Building

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (WFLA) — A significant fire erupted on Saturday afternoon at a building within the University of South Florida’s St. Petersburg campus, prompting a swift response from emergency crews.

By 6 p.m., multiple firetrucks were stationed around the USF Marine Science Lab building as flames shot through the roof, creating a huge column of smoke visible from afar.

The situation was classified as a hazmat incident, and authorities urged the public to steer clear of the area. St. Petersburg Fire Rescue officials confirmed that the two-story building had been evacuated without any reported injuries as of Saturday evening.

District Chief Michael Lewis addressed the media later that night, detailing how a passerby first noticed the fire and alerted emergency services.

Lewis highlighted the extensive firefighting effort, involving over 60 units and close to 200 firefighters. Efforts to control the blaze were anticipated to continue throughout the night and into the following morning.

Lewis said the fire was “mostly out” by 9 p.m., but that there would be a “very extensive” clean-up process requiring a hazmat team to go into the building and ensure that there were no chemical leaks.

“We have confirmed through air monitoring that there is no hazard to the surrounding areas,” the district chief said Saturday night, assuring nearby residents that it was safe.

The fire caused extensive damage to the science building. According to Lewis, the “entire roof” of USF’s Marine Science Lab building was burned off and there was water damage to much of the structure.

The smoke from the fire could be seen from miles away. Multiple people in the area submitted photos of the blaze.

The University of South Florida provided a statement Saturday night, asking people to “please continue to avoid the area and follow all emergency guidance.” Officials added that the Marine Science Lab building will be closed until further notice.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation Saturday.

Tragic Discovery: Missing Oklahoma Senate Hopeful Barry Christian Found Deceased in Vehicle

The tragic search for Barry Christian, a candidate for the Oklahoma State Senate, has reached a somber conclusion.

Authorities discovered Christian deceased inside his car within the Sandy Sanders Wildlife Management Area, merely two days after his disappearance. This was confirmed by the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation through their statement.

The cause of death for the 54-year-old has not yet been determined by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

Christian was last observed on April 28 in Sayre, Oklahoma. Concerns were raised when he failed to attend a scheduled meeting, prompting a missing person report on April 29, as reported by News 9.

On the morning of April 30, around 9:45 a.m., deputies from Beckham County discovered Christian’s vehicle stationed in the wildlife area, located just south of Erick.

Around 9:45 a.m. on April 30, Beckham County deputies spotted Christian’s vehicle parked in the wildlife area just south of Erick.

“As OSBI special agents processed the scene, they discovered a body inside the vehicle, who was positively identified as Christian,” authorities said. “It was determined that Christian was an Oklahoma State Senate candidate.”

The drilling consultant had been one of three Republican candidates running for Senate District 38.

Barry Christian’s Family Asks For “Grace” After His Death

In the aftermath of his death, Christian’s daughter Brooklyn asked the community for their prayers.

“Our world is upside down right now. We are still not sure of everything that happened, so please act with grace and treat my dad’s legacy with dignity,” she said in a statement to News 9. “We’re extremely grateful for everyone who assisted in the search efforts, and all of the media outlets that shared his information. I know there will be lots of people devastated by his passing.”

His youngest daughter also told the news outlet that he “wanted nothing more than to provide and protect his family” and had “lived only for his kids.”

The OSBI said the investigation into Christian’s death remains ongoing.

Ex-Biden Staffer Criticizes DOJ’s Decision to Block JetBlue-Spirit Merger

Neera Tanden, who once served as an aide to former President Joe Biden, has sparked a conversation about the recent decision by the Biden administration’s Department of Justice (DOJ) to block the merger between JetBlue Airlines and Spirit Airlines. Her comments come in the wake of Spirit Airlines announcing the cessation of all its operations.

In a post on X, Tanden pointed out that, as Spirit Airlines announced they were ending operations, “Thousands of people are losing their jobs.” Tanden also expressed that while “perhaps it was” the right call, “an analysis of the situation “must consider as part of the equation” how many families are affecting by the loss of jobs from Spirit Airlines.

“Given the news today that Spirit Airlines is closing down and thousands are losing their jobs, we need to scrutinize whether the Garland DOJ’s decision to halt the JetBlue merger with Spirit was the right move,” Tanden remarked. “While it may have been justified, any evaluation must weigh the impact on the many families affected by this loss.”

Lowell Cauffiel from News reported that the budget-friendly Spirit Airlines announced it was halting operations, leaving 17,000 employees suddenly unemployed on a Saturday morning. The closure of Spirit Airlines marks a significant shift in the airline industry, given its long-standing presence as a low-cost carrier.

The company’s website conveyed their sentiments, stating that they were “proud of the impact” their budget-friendly model had on the industry for over three decades. “It’s with great disappointment that on May 2, 2026, Spirit Airlines began an orderly wind-down of our operations, effective immediately,” the announcement read. “To our Guests: all flights have been canceled, and customer service is no longer available. We are proud of the impact of our ultra-low-cost model on the industry over the last 33 years and had hoped to serve our Guests for many years to come.”

Government Plans to Reduce Budget Spending Amid Looming Economic Challenges Affecting Employment

0

in brief

  • The treasurer says the upcoming May budget will show “restraint” as the government manages global economic shocks.
  • Economists say the negative impacts from overseas conflicts will be felt even more in the coming months.

The forthcoming federal budget is set to mirror the challenging economic landscape characterized by slower growth, diminished employment rates, and pricier exports. The government has indicated that global economic unpredictability has led to downgraded revenue forecasts.

Heightened costs in sectors like health and defense have been partly fueled by international incidents, such as the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, according to a statement from the Treasury on Friday.

Treasurer Jim Chalmers emphasized that “responsible economic management and spending restraint” will be central to the budget slated for release on May 12.

Chalmers remarked that these measures are essential to navigating the significant and unavoidable fiscal pressures facing the government.

He further explained that the government is prioritizing critical areas such as hospitals, defense, disaster response, the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS), and reacting to the Bondi terror attack. However, he cautioned that funding for these crucial areas might not reach previously anticipated levels.

“The conflict in the Middle East also means higher borrowing costs on the debt that we inherited will hit the budget hard, and higher inflation that will flow through to higher payment costs,” he added.

Some of the biggest pressures on the budget will be expenditure on hospitals, defence investment, and PBS listings, new Treasury and Finance figures show.

Also foreshadowing difficult fiscal decisions, Finance Minister Katy Gallagher warned “there are ongoing budget pressures and global uncertainty we have to manage” and said the budget “will continue to be about responsible choices”.

Slower hiring expected to hit employment rate

While the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) recently reported that Australia’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate remained unchanged at 4.3 per cent in March, some economists are warning that the nation’s historically strong employment rate could be at risk.

Westpac senior associate economist Ryan Wells said economic shocks typically hit the labour market with some lag, and he doesn’t expect the unemployment rate to remain at its current level.

“Higher fuel costs and global uncertainty take time to work through household spending, into margins, and eventually decisions around investment and staffing,” he said in a labour force analysis video.

“While employers may pause new hiring fairly quickly, they are often reluctant to cut headcount due to the difficulty and costs involved in securing and training new staff.”

Wells said he expected the unemployment rate to rise due to slower hiring, rather than mass job losses.

“We expect the unemployment rate to rise to around 5 per cent in 2026, and stay around that level in 2027,” he said.

However, fuel-reliant industries like logistics, construction and tourism would likely feel employment pressures sooner, he added.

A graph showing the increase in the annual inflation rate, which has climbed to 4.6 per cent in March.
Growth in housing (6.5 per cent) and clothing (7.0 per cent) have also driven monthly inflation.

Inflation has risen to its highest level since 2023, surging from 3.7 per cent to 4.6 per cent in March.

New data released by the ABS on Wednesday shows that rising fuel costs, driven by the war in the Middle East, have pushed the Consumer Price Index up 0.9 per cent.

Energy Minister Chris Bowen said on Saturday that Australia was “very well-placed to weather this storm” but warned that, even if the war in the Middle East was resolved today, economic disruption would continue.

“Even if the Strait of Hormuz opened tonight, there would still be impacts on supply chains,” he said — referring to the crucial transport route for oil and other commodities that has been largely closed by Iranian and United States blockades since the war began.

Heartfelt Farewell: Spirit Airlines Pilot Celebrated by Southwest Amid Unexpected Shutdown

0

In an unexpected turn of events, a Spirit Airlines pilot received a memorable farewell orchestrated by a competing airline and his son, following the airline’s sudden shutdown that cut his retirement flight short.

Captain Jon Jackson had been preparing for his final flight with Spirit Airlines, set to arrive at Baltimore-Washington International on Saturday. However, in an unexpected twist, the budget airline ceased operations overnight, leaving him grounded.

Stranded due to the abrupt closure, Captain Jackson managed to secure a ride with Southwest Airlines from Fort Lauderdale, where his son Chris, serving as a first officer, was able to lend a helping hand, as reported by CNBC.

In a heartwarming gesture, Chris leveraged his connections with the Southwest crew to create a special farewell for his father.

“Chris casually mentioned to the flight’s pilots that this was meant to be his dad’s retirement flight. They jumped at the chance to make the day unforgettable for Capt. Jackson,” Southwest shared on Instagram.

A dispatcher at BWI arranged for firetrucks to greet the plane upon landing, giving Jackson a water cannon salute.

The blue commercial jet passed under the two arching sprays from the airport fire department.

Jackson was showered with applause from a mixture of workers and travelers when he stepped off the plane and into the terminal, according to video shared by Southwest.

“Ladies and gentlemen, Mr. Jon Jackson,” a gate agent said over the intercom, before handing the former Spirit flyer a bottle of champagne.

“Very overwhelming, I can’t thank you all enough,” Jackson told the applauding crowd. “As Spirit goes down, this is a sad day, and you guys made it incredible. Thank you so much.”

Jackson posed for pictures with his son and the rest of the flight crew before leaving the airport to start his new chapter of life.

“It was a powerful reminder of the aviation community’s ability to show respect, compassion, and solidarity when it matters most,” the airline said.

“Above all, this moment was about honoring a fellow aviator. Congratulations, and thank you for your service in the skies, Capt. Jackson,” the statement added/

Spirit’s late-night closure stranded thousands of passengers across 277 cancelled flights on Saturday.

Company officials at the nation’s eighth-largest airline – which employed more than 17,000 staffers and operated hundreds of daily flights on its bright yellow planes  –  announced they were shutting operations “effective immediately” after failing to secure a $500 million bailout from the federal government.

All other future flights have also been cancelled, including 379 flights originally scheduled for Sunday.

“We are proud of the impact of our ultra-low-cost model on the industry over the last 34 years and had hoped to serve our guests for many years to come,” the company said in a statement Saturday morning.

The sudden collapse of Spirit left some passengers fuming over their upended travel plans, as other airlines offered to assist the stranded flyers.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy had announced Saturday that the administration had initiated a program to help the abandoned Spirit passengers.

“We’ve activated our airline partners to ensure passengers are not stranded, communities maintain route access, fares do not skyrocket, and Spirit’s workforce is connected to new job opportunities,” Duffy said.

United Airlines, Delta Air Lines, JetBlue and Southwest all capped their prices for the Spirit passengers looking to get to their destinations aboard a new airline.

Duffy applauded the joint efforts of the competing airlines, noting it was the industry “stepping up.”

Discover the Real-Life Muse Behind Michael Cera’s Captivating Barbie Character

Greta Gerwig’s film “Barbie” delivers a fresh narrative that melds existential themes with a touch of nostalgia. As the stereotypical Barbie, portrayed by Margot Robbie, steps beyond the confines of Barbie Land into the real world, audiences are introduced to cinematic renditions of her and Ken’s, played by Ryan Gosling, circle of friends. Among these is the often overlooked Allan doll, with Michael Cera’s portrayal elevating him to a memorable character whose complex backstory underscores the film’s deeper messages.

Allan made his debut in 1964 as Ken’s best friend, notable for sharing a wardrobe with him. However, the film doesn’t focus on their camaraderie, as Allan vanished from the scene in the mid-1960s. When reintroduced in 1991, Allan’s character evolved with his marriage to Midge. At this point, Mattel subtly altered his name from Allan to Alan, without explanation. A year later, Allan and Midge became parents to twins, though the children appeared only in promotional materials and were not sold as dolls. In 2002, the family became available as toys, with Alan and their son, Ryan, sold together, while Midge, marketed as a pregnant doll, was controversially pulled from shelves. Nonetheless, in 2004, Midge and Alan resurfaced to celebrate their daughter Nikki’s first birthday, indicating Mattel’s enduring commitment to the characters despite mixed public reactions.

Midge’s pregnancy propelled her to a notoriety comparable to Barbie and Ken, setting her apart from Allan and possibly explaining their lack of scenes together in the movie. Despite his connections and repeated appearances, Allan remains somewhat sidelined. This marginalization shapes Cera’s portrayal of Allan, influencing both his character’s journey and his potential future within the storyline.

Midge’s pregnancy made her as well-known as Barbie and Ken, and it put her on a whole different level compared to Allan, which is probably why they don’t share scenes in the “Barbie” movie. Allan remains overlooked despite his high-profile connections and continuous returns to the brand. This fate heavily influences Cera’s version of the character, but it also shapes Allan’s future.

Still, Allan’s moments of courage aren’t entirely his doing. His confidence only emerges after Barbie embarks on a self-discovery journey to overcome her insecurities. Allan’s own attempt to flee the newly established Kendom happens after Barbie’s venture into reality, during which he openly airs his grievances before confronting some Kens. Such actions were unthinkable for him at the movie’s start, but witnessing Barbie’s embrace of individuality inspires him to follow suit. These introspective moments forge a newfound bond between Barbie and Allan, imparting a valuable lesson to audiences: one need not be confined by past expectations or limitations.

How Allan’s history shapes Michael Cera’s character

Michael Cera told GQ that Allan is a sad character who doesn’t really have direction. This is because Allan is a forgotten doll, and the awareness of his past is noticeable in his first scene as he awkwardly stands on a beach next to a bunch of Kens who are participating in different activities. Ken is supposed to be his best friend, but they don’t share the same mindset because of Allan’s discontinuation. His checkered past has led to an individuality that no one understands, but being discontinued is the reason why he becomes an unlikely hero. His large absence from Ken’s life means that he never adopted the groupthink mentality of the Kens, nor did he adopt the jealousy that they feel toward each other. This allows Allan to become the anti-Ken that the “Barbie” movie needs to reach its conclusion.

However, Allan shouldn’t receive all of the credit for his heroic streak. His confidence doesn’t kick in until Barbie takes a journey that helps her navigate her insecurities. Allan doesn’t try to escape the newly founded Kendom until after Barbie’s maiden voyage into reality, and this escape attempt includes Allan venting about his frustrations before fighting some Kens. He would have never done that at the beginning of the film, but watching someone else embrace their own individuality encourages him to try it out for himself. These moments of reflection give Barbie and Allan a common ground that has never existed before, and their friendship teaches viewers that you don’t have to fit into the mold that the past has put you in.

Shocking Deal: Principal’s Abuse Charges Dropped in Exchange for Retirement

A high school principal from New York City, known as ‘Creepy Bill’, might have his criminal charges dismissed if he decides to retire, according to recent reports.

William Bassell, aged 67, faces accusations of sexual abuse and forcible touching involving both staff members and a student at the Academy of American Studies in Queens, New York.

Despite allegations suggesting that Bassell used the school as his “personal playground for sexual fulfillment,” he may only face civil lawsuits. The New York Daily News reports that his criminal charges could be dropped if he chooses to retire.

As part of the agreement to avoid prosecution, Bassell would also be required to complete a sex offender counseling program, the report further details.

Prosecutors mentioned that the decision has the backing of some of Bassell’s alleged victims, which include a former student, two teachers, and an assistant principal.

Former student and alleged victim Khaibet Leal said she demands to know if Bassell – who earned more than $226,000 in 2025 – would be allowed to keep his pension if he chooses to retire. He has served as principal for 31 years.

‘While I am grateful that the defendant is required to resign from the DOE, I am eager to know whether he will receive his pension,’ she said.

‘The idea that NYC taxpayers would foot the bill for Bassell’s pension makes my blood boil.’

It was reported that Bassell was handed a lenient ‘adjournment contemplating dismissal’, which would allow the criminal charges against him to be dropped if he retires.

While the criminal charges may be dropped, Bassell will still face allegations in civil court, with two lawsuits filed last year accusing him of being a serial sexual predator.

The lawsuits alleged that Bassell’s school was his ‘personal playground’ for more than a decade, with the Department of Education also accused of blocking reports about the principal.

One of the lawsuits brought by four women said Bassell’s reputation for ‘sexually harassing, degrading and assaulting female staff and students’ led him to be given the nickname ‘Creepy Bill.’

The lawsuit alleged that Bassell ‘regularly groped women on their inner thighs and other intimate areas of the body, leered at women’s breasts, made unwelcome, vulgar, and sexually charged comments to women, and sent them lascivious text messages.’

In another civil lawsuit, an anonymous school staffer alleged that the Department of Education ignored her complaints when Bassell allegedly sent her more than 30,000 text messages, and also allegedly inappropriately touched her.

In texts revealed in the lawsuit, Bassell allegedly sent in one text: ‘You know what you can do with that tongue don’t you.’

The principal also allegedly begged the woman to give him a ‘hug’ away from school cameras, and for her to send him pictures of herself, the lawsuit alleged.

Bassell was arrested in May 2025 on allegations that he sexually abused two of the accusers in that lawsuit, an assistant principal and a teacher.

Following reports that Bassell would avoid being criminally prosecuted in exchange for retiring, Assistant District Attorney Bradley King said the two accusers ‘are aware of the proposed disposition and support it.’

Former student Khaibet Leal said her demands to know if Bassell would be allowed to keep his pension were key, but said she was ‘grateful’ that he would be out of the school.

In a civil lawsuit, Leal alleged that Bassell inappropriately touched her on a field trip to the Metropolitan Opera in February 2015, accusing him of rubbing her inner thigh when she fell to the floor with a migraine and stomachache.

In a statement on Thursday, Department of Education spokeswoman Chyann Tull said: ‘This alleged behavior is reprehensible and wholly unacceptable.

‘This individual was immediately removed from students upon learning of these allegations.’

The Daily Mail has contacted the Department of Education over whether Bassell will be allowed to keep his pension.

Brendan Brosh, a spokesman for Queens D.A. Melinda Katz, added in a statement: ‘Following an extensive review of the facts in this case, including conversations with the complaining witnesses, the defendant will enroll in a mandated treatment program, which typically lasts six months, and begin the process of resigning from the Department of Education.

‘If the defendant fails to complete the required treatment in full, he will face trial. We thank the complainants for coming forward which allowed for the just resolution of this case.’

When Bassell was arrested last year, his attorney said he denied the ‘baseless and vindictive criminal allegations’, and said he was cooperating with police ‘to ensure the truth is brought to light.’

Rubio Issues Stern Warning to China Over Panama Ship Detentions, Asserts Hemisphere Sovereignty as ‘Non-Negotiable

0

In a firm message to China, Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized that the sovereignty of the Western Hemisphere is not open to negotiation. This statement comes after the United States, alongside regional partners, accused Beijing of detaining ships flying the Panamanian flag as part of a larger conflict over control of canal ports.

In collaboration with Bolivia, Costa Rica, Guyana, Paraguay, and Trinidad and Tobago, the U.S. released a joint statement condemning China’s actions against Panama-flagged vessels. They described these moves as a “blatant attempt to politicize maritime trade” and a violation of regional sovereignty. This situation is being framed as a crucial test of strategic influence over one of the globe’s vital commercial passages.

Although the conflict over Panama involves the detention of ships rather than a physical blockade, it is increasingly being compared to other geopolitical hotspots like the Strait of Hormuz. Observers see it as part of a larger struggle between Beijing and Washington over who will set the rules for global trade and energy routes.

Hegset

The backdrop to this confrontation is a decision by Panama’s Supreme Court in early 2026, which nullified the legal framework that had allowed Hong Kong-based CK Hutchison to control the Balboa and Cristobal terminals. These terminals sit astride the Panama Canal, a key maritime chokepoint that facilitates about 5% of global trade.

Containers and cranes stand at the ready at the Port of Balboa, located at the Pacific entrance of the Panama Canal in Panama City, as seen on February 25, 2025. This strategic location has become a focal point in the evolving geopolitical tensions.

U.S. regulators have monitored nearly 70 Panama-flagged vessels detained by Chinese authorities since March 8, according to Reuters — a surge American officials say appears designed to retaliate against Panama and pressure global shipping.

“China has used Iran to destabilize the Middle East. In effect, Iran has been China’s proxy,” China expert Gordon Chang told Fox News Digital, arguing Beijing’s actions in Panama fit a broader global pattern in which China uses economic leverage, trade pressure and regional partners to expand influence while condemning similar tactics from Washington.

Chang said Beijing is now facing growing resistance as the U.S. increasingly moves not only against China directly, but also against governments and geopolitical flash points he argues have strengthened Beijing’s hand.

“Trump apparently decided that he would counter this sly tactic by taking China’s proxies — Venezuela, Cuba and Iran — off the board,” Chang said.

He also framed pressure on Iran and threats to the Strait of Hormuz as part of a larger strategic effort aimed at both Tehran and Beijing.

“Closing the Strait of Hormuz is a two-fer, starving Iran’s regime and shaking China’s already fragile economy,” Chang said. “Trump is using energy to reorder the world.”

Chang also accused Beijing of hypocrisy over trade.

“China’s Communists invented hypocrisy. Nobody does hypocrisy better than the Chinese Communists,” he said, arguing that China long benefited from a global trading system it increasingly weaponized for geopolitical purposes.

“The elemental truth is that China started this cycle of action and retaliation,” Chang said. “If China had not threatened America, America would not have leaned on Panama. If America had not leaned on Panama, China would not have detained Panamanian vessels.”

China has rejected accusations that it is politicizing trade, with its foreign ministry arguing U.S. criticism reflects Washington’s own strategic ambitions around the canal.

China’s Foreign Ministry called the statement on Wednesday “entirely baseless and misleading”, said it would take steps to safeguard China’s interests in Panama, and accused the United States of politicizing ports, according to Reuters.

The Chinese Embassy in Washington, D.C., spokesperson Liu Pengyu told Fox News Digital that, “Chinese competent authorities conducted routine inspections of vessels in accordance with laws and regulations. The allegations are completely unfounded and merely a distortion of facts. It is the United States that has framed normal affairs concerning relevant terminals as issues about politics and security, making pretenses and slandering others with rumors. China’s position on the Panamanian ports issue is clear and will firmly defend its legitimate rights and interests. We urge relevant countries not to be blinded and utilized by those with ill intentions.”
