Trump and Melania Promptly Exit White House Correspondents’ Dinner

0

The atmosphere at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner dramatically shifted when shots were fired, prompting an immediate evacuation of President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump.

What is usually a celebrated evening in Washington, D.C., quickly descended into turmoil at roughly 8:15 p.m. Shots echoed through the lobby of the Washington Hilton, sending shockwaves through the event.

In a swift response, the President and First Lady were escorted to safety, with members of the cabinet following closely behind.

The prestigious gathering had just started when a suspect, wielding a substantial weapon, burst into the hotel lobby, causing panic among attendees.

Thousands of guests found themselves scrambling for cover beneath tables and chairs as Secret Service agents urgently directed everyone in the ballroom to take evasive action.

Audible gasps echoed through the ballroom as guests realized something was happening. Hundreds of journalists got on phones to call in information.

A Secret Service agent was shot but he was wearing a protective vest a source familiar with the matter told The Daily Mail.

No injuries have been reported and the president has since confirmed the shooter has been ‘apprehended.’

He and the First Lady have since departed the hotel and returned to the White House, where he will hold a press conference shortly.

The President was attending the event for the first time since 2011 and was set to be honored and give a speech.

The Secret Service and other authorities swarmed the banquet hall at the Washington Hilton as guests dining on burrata salad ducked under tables by the hundreds.

‘Out of the way, sir!’ someone yelled. Others yelled to duck.

‘The US Secret Service, in coordination with the Metropolitan Police Department, is investigating a shooting incident near the main magnetometer screening area at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. One individual is in custody,’ a White House official told The Daily Mail in a statement.

The condition of those involved is not yet known and law enforcement is actively assessing the situation.’

Trump confirmed the gunman was in custody in a post to Truth Social.

‘Quite an evening in D.C. Secret Service and Law Enforcement did a fantastic job. They acted quickly and bravely. The shooter has been apprehended, and I have recommended that we ‘LET THE SHOW GO ON’ but, will entirely be guided by Law Enforcement. They will make a decision shortly. Regardless of that decision, the evening will be much different than planned, and we’ll just, plain, have to do it again.’

About an hour later, however, WHCA President Weijia Jiang said that the Secret Service had asked everyone to leave.

‘We will do this again,’ said Jiang. Shortly afterward, staff began breaking down table settings and the presidential lectern.

Daily Mail reporters in attendance reported hearing three to four shots and hearing Secret Service agents yelling to get down.

Some in the crowd reported hearing what they believed to be five to eight shots fired.

The banquet hall — where hundreds of prominent journalists, celebrities and national leaders were awaiting Trump’s speech — was immediately evacuated.

Members of the National Guard took up position inside the building as people were allowed to leave but not re-enter. Security outside was also extremely tight.

It was not immediately clear what happened. A law enforcement official confirmed there was a shooter but no further details were immediately available.

Those in attendance included Trump, Vice President JD Vance, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

Anchor Wolf Blitzer later reported that the police said the gunman had a ‘major weapon.’

Trump alongside WHCA President Weijia Jiang, did not appear to notice the gunshots before they were evacuated, as the President was speaking to the host, mentalist Oz Pearlman.

Shouts of ‘God bless America’ were heard throughout the ballroom as the entire dais was led out of the room, with many of the other guests still inside.

Protesters had been spotted both outside and inside the Washington Hilton related to the Iran War and Israel’s war on Hamas ahead of the dinner.

Jiang announced about a half hour later that the program was set to resume in ‘not much longer.’

Trump arrived Saturday night to an event where the leaders of a nation at war mingled with celebrities, journalists and even a puppet — Triumph the Insult Comic Dog — in a dinner that typically generates debate about whether the relationship between journalists and their sources should include socializing together and putting aside sometimes adversarial relationships.

Trump and wife Melania popped up on stage after leaving the White House Saturday night, as the rest of the star studded attendees walked the red carpet and took their seats with JD Vance and his wife Usha, as well as Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt.

The President has had a rocky relationship with the annual shindig, held by the White House Correspondents’ Association, but was pleased to be named an honoree for this year’s event.

Past presidents who have attended have generally spoken about the importance of free speech and the First Amendment, adding in some light roasts about individual journalists.

The Republican president did not attend during his first term or the first year of his second.

He came as a guest in 2011, sitting in the audience as President Barack Obama, a Democrat, made some jokes about the New York real estate developer.

Trump also attended as a private citizen in 2015.

Past dinners have also featured comedians who poke at presidents. This year, the group opted to hire mentalist Oz Pearlman as the featured entertainment.

IDNR Police Press Charges After Video Reveals Woman Illegally Collecting Goose Eggs Near Golf Mill Mall, According to Niles Police

In Niles, Illinois, a suspect faces charges after being caught on camera allegedly stealing goose eggs earlier this week.

Officials from the Niles Police Department announced on Saturday that the case has been transferred to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources Conservation Police for further action.

Thanks to tips from the community, authorities were able to identify and charge a suspect in connection with the theft, according to the police.

As of now, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources Conservation Police has not disclosed the name of the individual charged in this incident.

The Niles police released footage showing a woman removing goose eggs from a nest and placing them in her pockets. The incident occurred around 4:18 p.m. on Monday, with the nest located beside a building near the Golf Mill Mall.

Canada geese are protected in Illinois, by the 1918 Migratory Bird Treaty Act. Without a permit, it’s illegal kill them, or disturb their nests, eggs or young.

Animal control believes the goose eggs were just a couple weeks away from hatching.

Niles police had set up the camera to monitor a pair of adult Canada geese and their eggs that were nested there for the last couple of weeks.

“Two hours later, I get footage of a woman taking the eggs instead of the adult geese coming back,” Niles police Animal Control Officer Allison Cole said. “Mixed reactions, I’m shocked. A part of me is still trying to think, ‘OK, maybe she’s affiliated with an organization or wildlife rehabilitation that was also aware of this nest and monitoring them.’”

Local wildlife organizations confirmed it was not any of their employees.

“Sometimes it’s just a matter of educating; some people truly don’t know they’re not supposed to do this. And just educating, maybe getting some fines is what’s warranted,” Cole said.

If you ever come across any nests with eggs in them, do not touch them. And if you believe they’re abandoned, then you should call the Department of Natural Resources or local wildlife organizations.

Unveiling Gaza’s Electoral Crossroads: Could Hamas’ Influence Reshape the Region?

0

On Saturday, residents of Deir al-Balah in Gaza are set to cast their votes for new local officials, marking the first such election in two decades. Experts caution that this political change might enable Hamas to solidify its grip on power, as the group remains defiant against disarmament conditions tied to ceasefire agreements.

Jonathan Schanzer, Executive Director of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, expressed to Fox News Digital that the wrong timing and precarious conditions in the Palestinian Authority often result in electoral wins for Hamas. He pointed out that this has historically led to heightened tensions.

Schanzer referred to the 2006 push for elections by the Bush administration, which culminated in Hamas’s victory and subsequently triggered a prolonged confrontation and a civil war.

“It’s crucial to exercise caution with elections in regions like Gaza,” Schanzer emphasized, “where Hamas wields considerable influence and terrorist organizations are still regarded by some as legitimate entities.”

The ongoing posthumous identification of Gazan journalists and media professionals as members of terrorist organizations underscores the challenging task of distinguishing between militant affiliates and civilians.

Four parties are contesting the election in Deir al-Balah. To be eligible, candidates were asked to accept the Palestine Liberation Organization and the terms of agreements it has previously made, including recognition of the State of Israel and endorsement of a two-state solution, according to reporting by the Center for Peace Communications.

However, many are concerned that one party, Deir al-Balah Unites Us, is affiliated with Hamas. Two of its candidates have been pictured with Hamas officials or police officers.

Ahmed Fouad Alkhatib, resident senior fellow at the Atlantic Council, posted on X that “holding elections in Gaza at this time is extremely reckless and irresponsible,” noting that “Gazans are being arrested, jailed, tortured, shot, and killed daily for social media posts and anything they say that’s perceived as being critical of Hamas.

“These elections should be halted and prevented from proceeding, for they are meddling with the transition process that the Board of Peace, [National Council for the Administration of Gaza], and the international community have planned for Gaza, with Hamas’s disarmament and relinquishment of power being the first necessary step.”

Disarmament of Hamas, a key demand within the second phase of President Donald Trump’s ceasefire agreement, has yet to be completed. Reports indicate that Hamas has increased its hold in Gaza as of March, continuing to tax locals, building education system and placing police throughout the territory it holds.

Schanzer said Hamas is unlikely to hand over its arms. If it were to do so, he said that they “will try to make distinctions between weapons,” possibly offering to give up heavy weapons like RPGs while maintaining a large arsenal of automatic weapons.

Hamas appears to have made a partial disarmament offer. The New York Times reported April 19 that two Hamas officials said they would hand over thousands of weapons from their police force and other security institutions. The officials “did not provide a clear answer” when asked if weapons from Hamas’ so-called military wing would be included.

Schanzer pushed back on claims that Hamas’ political and military wings operate separately.

“That is a fiction. The idea that they are separate in any way or that there is a firewall between them is asinine.” He said that this is “a distinction that has been made up by the West in order to be able to have political relations with Hamas, or to justify elections. It’s a mistake to buy into that fiction.”

Schanzer said weakening Iran could be key to minimizing Hamas’ influence.

“The psychological impact of their top patron being defeated on the battlefield, I can’t overstate how important that event could be,” he said. “It would be a gut punch to Hamas.”

With Israel controlling about 53% of the Gaza Strip and Hamas the remaining 47%, Schanzer said, “We could continue to see the erosion of Hamas control” amid the “slow and steady process of Israel winning on the ground.”

He said patience, though, is necessary, adding that “the enemies of the United States and Israel and the West have a very different timeline. They want to wait out everybody because they know that we’d like to move on.”

The Trump administration did not respond to Fox News Digital’s questions about whether a partial disarmament would satisfy its ceasefire terms or if it would take action to stall elections until there’s more stability in Gaza

Royal Advisors Strategize to Ensure Seamless U.S. State Visit Amid Potential Trump Disruptions

0

King Charles is set to embark on a State Visit to Washington, following extensive preparatory efforts by aides from Buckingham Palace, Whitehall, and the Diplomatic Service to ensure the visit runs smoothly.

The unpredictable nature of President Trump adds a unique element to the visit, which will see the King and Queen Camilla welcomed on Monday for a private tea at the White House. The agenda includes a garden party and a ceremonial military review, culminating in King Charles delivering a historic joint address to Congress on Tuesday.

In the lead-up to the visit, intense coordination has been ongoing between the Palace, the Cabinet Office, and the British Embassy in Washington. One royal source described the efforts as implementing ‘mitigations’ to prevent any potentially embarrassing incidents from the increasingly unpredictable President.

This visit takes place against a backdrop of escalating tensions between President Trump and Sir Keir Starmer, particularly over issues such as the UK’s stance on Iran, the handling of the Chagos Islands, and the brief tenure of Peter Mandelson as UK Ambassador to the US.

Adding to the diplomatic pressure, the US Government recently hinted at possibly withdrawing its support for Britain’s claim over the Falkland Islands, in response to the UK’s tepid support for the conflict.

Barely 24 hours before the Falklands threat was revealed, officials had held one of the final planning meetings for the trip in which a royal representative had asked a British diplomat in America about how to avoid ‘unpleasant surprises’.

After the diplomat had offered honeyed reassurances, the royal representative is understood to have said: ‘Don’t make promises you can’t keep’.

The ‘mitigations’ have included talks about restricting the amount of public time between the King and Trump, with an emphasis on private interaction away from the cameras. Discussions have also settled on delivering so-called ‘easy wins’, in which Charles raises issues unlikely to prove controversial in the Oval Office.

This is expected to include sentiments on passing on the world to the next generation in better shape: although given the King’s strong views on the environment, and Trump’s scepticism about climate change and related matters, even that is not without its risks.

A source said: ‘The trip was too far advanced by the time the Iran crisis blew up to stop it. So we are having to Trump-proof it as much as that is possible, to make it as much about Charles and Camilla and as little about the President as is viable in the circumstances.’

However, a royal source told the MoS that it was ‘not right’ to say that the preparations had been framed by a feeling of ‘trepidation’.

The source said: ‘If state visits were easy, there wouldn’t be much point in doing them. The Trump visit here last year was a success, and helped to reset, rebuild and renew relations, and we hope that this outward visit will do the same.

‘It is obviously not without complexity, but we have done our best to mitigate the risks and maximise the opportunities, in the hope it will deliver similarly positive results for the UK.’

The visit will also include a bilateral meeting between King Charles and the President, during which Queen Camilla and the First Lady are expected to hold their own separate meeting.

After the King becomes only the second British monarch to address a joint session of Congress – Queen Elizabeth II did so in 1991 – the couple will return to the White House for a state dinner.

Before departing from Washington, the royal couple will lay a wreath and flowers to honour fallen service members, before moving to New York City to meet the families of victims of the terrorist attacks on 9/11.

While in New York, the King will also visit a community organisation which teaches children and young people affected by food insecurity ‘sustainable urban farming’. He is expected to highlight environmental and social causes while there.

Queen Camilla will attend an event celebrating the countries’ shared love of literature, including A.A Milne’s Winnie‑the‑Pooh stories, which celebrate their 100th anniversary this year.

The tour ends in Virginia, where the King and Queen will watch performances by Appalachian cultural groups and take part in a community party celebrating America’s 250th birthday. They will then depart for the British overseas territory of Bermuda.

President Trump told the BBC last week he hoped the visit could repair relations with the UK, and described Charles as ‘a fantastic man’. He added: ‘I know him well, I’ve known him for years. He’s a brave man, and he’s a great man.’

Breaking News: Security Scare at White House Correspondents’ Dinner as Trump Evacuated Amid Gunfire

0

Chaos unfolded at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on Saturday night when gunshots were fired, prompting a dramatic evacuation of President Trump and First Lady Melania less than half an hour after their arrival.

The annual star-studded event at the Washington Hilton was thrown into disarray as footage captured the sound of at least five gunshots echoing from the lobby. Over 2,000 attendees, including journalists and Trump administration officials, sought refuge under tables amid the commotion.

President Trump, First Lady Melania, Vice President JD Vance, and Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt were swiftly escorted from the ballroom by Secret Service agents, ensuring their safety as the situation unfolded.

Subsequently, the remaining members of Trump’s cabinet were also evacuated from the venue as a precautionary measure.

According to sources, the assailant was neutralized by security personnel after the incident, which occurred near the metal detectors positioned outside the ballroom.

The Secret Service has since locked down the hotel.

The event, hosted by the White House Correspondents Association, is expected to continue.

Brazilian Teenager, 16, Becomes World Football’s Most Sought-After Prospect with £43M Valuation; Man City, Newcastle, Barcelona, and PSG in Fierce Bidding Competition

0

How does a young player with no senior match experience command a price tag of £43 million? It’s a question that Europe’s top football clubs are eager to answer.

Both Manchester City and Barcelona are leading the charge to secure the signature of Palmeiras’ rising star, Eduardo Conceicao. These clubs are deep into negotiations that could see the deal reach €50 million (£43 million).

Despite being just 16 years old and yet to make his senior debut, Conceicao is quickly becoming one of the most coveted young talents in global football, drawing significant interest from several European giants.

In addition to City and Barcelona, a number of Premier League teams have expressed their interest. Meanwhile, Paris Saint-Germain is keeping a close eye on proceedings, ready to make a move if the situation aligns with their ambitions.

Both Manchester City and Barcelona are actively discussing potential financial arrangements and long-term plans with Conceicao’s agents. Adding to the intrigue, the player’s family has recently traveled to both England and France to explore these opportunities and consider the best path for his burgeoning career.

In recent years Manchester City and Palmeiras have maintained close relations, particularly through the transfers of Gabriel Jesus in 2017 and Vitor Reis in 2025 for a combined £57m.

Conceicao is represented by DSA Sports, an agency co-owned by Douglas Sousa, father of fellow wonder boy Endrick – who Palmeiras got £60m for in 2024 when he joined Real Madrid on his 18th birthday. Conceicao’s camp are expected to prioritise a club that can accelerate his transition into elite-level football.

While the lack of senior experience might appear alarming for a player valued so highly, it has worked before.

Vinicius Junior agreed his £40m move to Real Madrid just weeks after his first-team debut for Flamengo, while Estevao Willian (another Palmeiras product) cost Chelsea £29m after just 10 Brazilian top-flight appearances.

Palmeiras insiders believe Conceicao could follow the path of Brazil’s top young talents if his development continues at the same pace, highlighting his rapid evolution, particularly his move from out wide into a central attacking midfield position, where the club believe he is best suited.

He is known for his excellent dribbling and has previously played on the left wing before his shift into a central role.

Conceicao is currently in Paraguay, wearing Brazil Under 17s’ No 10 shirt at the South American championship, a tournament that his country have dominated historically, winning 14 of the 20 editions. He struck four minutes into Brazil’s opening game, rising high to beat Bolivia’s goalkeeper to a cross in an eventual 5-0 win, before powering in the third goal in a comprehensive 3-0 demolition of Argentina in the group stage.

Those two goals, coupled with two assists, have helped Brazil reach the semi-finals, where they will face Colombia, and there is an expectation he could travel to Europe to visit interested clubs once the tournament concludes, while a long-awaited Palmeiras debut cannot be far away.

Inside Palmeiras, he is viewed as a unique profile with a different trajectory from recent breakout stars, as the next in line to follow their vaunted ‘Generation of a Billion’.

These were four players they earmarked to earn the club a billion reais (about £155m) – Endrick, Estevao, former West Ham player Luis Guilherme and 19-year-old forward Luighi, who is still at the club.

Palmeiras academy director Joao Paulo Sampaio believes Conceicao can join that group who made the leap to Europe.

‘Endrick and Estevao always had the spotlight from the age of 11,’ said Sampaio. ‘Eduardo is only getting that attention now — and we don’t know where he can go, which is a good doubt.’

Lucas Andrade, who coached Conceicao with Palmeiras Under 20s and is now with Brazil Under 20s, offers further insight.

‘Eduardo has the profile of a ball-carrying attacking midfielder,’ Andrade tells Daily Mail Sport. ‘He can also play as a left-sided winger, but his best performances come through the central corridor, as a No 10.

‘He has strong dribbling characteristics — similar, in today’s game, to Raphinha, and internationally to Ousmane Dembele — players who can break lines both with dribbling and vertical passes.’

Andrade also pointed to Conceicao’s physical readiness as a key factor behind the growing interest from English clubs.

‘I believe he has the characteristics for the Premier League because he is a very physical player,’ says Andrade. ‘Beyond technical quality, that league demands a high physical level, and Eduardo has that, not only in speed but also in contact situations.

‘Despite his age, he already shows strength, which makes a difference in such a competitive and intense environment.

‘He is extremely hardworking, dedicated and humble. At no point has he allowed the praise or the interest from European clubs to change how he sees the world.

‘He enjoys being with friends, playing video games. He is a young player with a very strong character who has remained grounded as his profile has grown.’

Sydney Sweeney and Scooter Braun Turn Heads with Playful Stagecoach 2026 Moment

Sydney Sweeney enjoyed a prime spot during Ella Langley’s performance at the 2026 Stagecoach Festival, thanks to her boyfriend, Scooter Braun.

In widely shared footage, the 28-year-old Euphoria actress could be seen perched on Braun’s shoulders, enthusiastically joining in as Langley played her set at the country music event in Indio, California, on Friday, April 24. Sweeney not only mouthed along to the lyrics but also flashed a smile at the camera capturing this memorable moment.

Earlier that day, Sweeney was spotted enjoying BigXthaPlug’s performance at the Mustang Stage, where she delighted fans by posing for photos and mingling with the crowd, as reported by USA Today.

Us Weekly has reached out to Sweeney and Braun’s representatives for their comments on the event.

The couple first attracted attention in June of last year when they were seen together at Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez’s high-profile wedding in Venice, Italy. At that time, a source revealed to Us in June 2025 that while Sweeney was not committed to any exclusive relationship, she was enjoying her time with Braun.

The couple were first spotted together last June when they both attended Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez’s star-studded wedding in Venice, Italy. A source exclusively told Us in June 2025 that Sweeney was “not exclusively dating anyone right now but is having fun with Scooter.”

“It is not serious,” the insider added. “[She is] dating around and in her single era without having any pressure.”

The source indicated that Braun, 44, was “very into” Sweeney and had “been trying to see her in between her work commitments.” (Braun was previously married to health activist Yael Cohen Braun from 2014 to 2022. They share three children: sons Jagger and Levi, 11 and 9 respectively, and daughter Hart, 7.)

The romance seemed to heat up last autumn, when they attended a Halloween event together and Braun attended Sweeney’s space-themed birthday party.

Us exclusively learned in October that the new romance was completely different for Sweeney than anything she’d experienced with past partners.

“They are dating and it has become more serious. Still not putting a label on it, but Sydney has been having a lot of fun with Scooter,” an insider told Us. “It has been low-pressure for both of them and has been a different relationship for Sydney. Scooter has introduced her to new perspectives, especially when it comes to business.”

Earlier this month, Braun packed on the PDA with Sweeney when he accompanied her to the Euphoria season 3 world premiere at Hollywood’s historic TCL Chinese Theatre. Us reported at the time that Sweeney and the music manager had progressed to a “committed” relationship.

“They are the real deal, and their relationship has become very serious,” a source told Us. “People around them thought that this would be just a fling, but they are committed.”

Is Sydney Sweeney Dating Scooter Braun What We Know So Far

Sydney Sweeney and Scooter Braun sparked dating rumors after spending time together in Venice. Sweeney and Braun were first linked in September 2025 after a video of the pair attending Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez’s lavish Italy wedding that June started circulating online. At the time, a source exclusively told Us Weekly that Sweeney is […]

The insider added, “[Sweeney] really appreciates Scooter’s support with all her projects. [She] loves hearing his feedback. … [He is] emotionally invested in her career and wants the best for her.”

They finally went Instagram official on April 15, when Braun joked that he was a “lucky bastard” in the caption of a black-and-white photo of the two together.

Former Idaho Governor and US Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne Passes Away at 74

Dirk Kempthorne, who once served as both the Governor of Idaho and the U.S. Secretary of the Interior, passed away at the age of 74, according to a family statement released on Saturday.

The statement noted that Kempthorne died on Friday night in Boise, though it did not specify the cause. It was known that he had been battling colon cancer since last year.

“Outside of his political career, he was a dedicated husband, father, and grandfather,” the family shared. “His greatest happiness came from spending time with his loved ones and everyone he encountered throughout his life. He had a unique ability to connect with people, always remembering their names, stories, and the little details that made them feel appreciated and acknowledged.”

Kempthorne, identified as a moderate Republican, began his political journey as the mayor of Boise in 1985 at the young age of 34. He is often praised for rejuvenating the city’s downtown area by facilitating a deal to construct a convention center and encouraging further development. His tenure lasted seven years before he secured a seat in the U.S. Senate, succeeding Sen. Steve Symms in 1992.

While in Washington, Kempthorne played a pivotal role in crafting legislation, which was later signed by President Bill Clinton, aimed at eliminating unfunded federal mandates imposed on state and local governments.

Rather than run for reelection in 1998, he entered an open election for governor, trouncing his Democratic opponent by garnering more than two-thirds of the vote.

President George W. Bush appointed him Interior secretary in 2006, a position he held until the end of Bush’s presidency — and during which he lived on a houseboat docked in the Potomac River.

“Dirk was one of the finest public servants I ever knew because he was one of the finest men,” former President George W. Bush said in a written statement Saturday. “He was considerate, smart, and capable. Dirk loved our lands and waters, and as Secretary of the Interior, he was an effective steward of our natural resources.”

He protected polar bears

Environmentalists often found Kempthorne too accommodating to industry, citing his efforts to push oil and gas development in the Gulf of Mexico and off Alaska. More than 100 conservation groups opposed his nomination as Interior secretary, saying that as a senator he had voted to eliminate federal money for recovery of the endangered wolf, to open the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil and gas exploration, and to sell off federal public lands.

Yet in 2008, he bucked other advisers in the White House by insisting that the polar bear should be listed as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act because of the loss of sea ice in the Arctic. He was prepared to resign over it when Bush decided to back him.

“As Governor, Dirk left an enduring mark on our state,” Idaho Gov. Brad Little said in a written statement. With the partnership of his wife, Patricia, Kempthorne “championed children and families, strengthened public education, and led transformational investments in our transportation system that will benefit Idahoans for generations.”

After leaving the federal government, he became the chief executive of a trade association of life insurance companies.

In a 2023 question-and-answer session with the George W. Bush Presidential Center, Kempthorne recalled helping evacuate nearly 400 U.S. citizens and Afghan allies from Afghanistan two years earlier, as many were being sought by the Taliban following the U.S. military’s chaotic withdrawal. Kemthorne and others worked frantically for months to raise money and garner the support of diplomatic channels to charter buses and an Airbus A340 to help resettle the evacuees in the U.S. and Canada.

He helped Afghan refugees

At one point, with the flight fully booked, the organizers received a list of more people who needed to leave urgently.

“That night, at a total loss for answers, alone, I knelt in prayer,” Kempthorne recalled. “I said, ‘Dear God, we cannot leave these people behind, please give a path forward.’ ”

He said he then had a vision of Mother Mary holding the infant Jesus. It gave him an idea: The babies on the flight didn’t need their own seats, as their parents could hold them. The organizers confirmed that with the airline and were able to add an additional 50 people to the flight, Kempthorne said.

Kempthorne was born in San Diego and grew up in Spokane, Washington. His father was a regional representative for Maytag, the appliance company. His mother, a homemaker, once worked as a secretary for the Legislature in Nebraska, her home state.

Kempthorne attended San Bernardino Valley College in California before transferring to the University of Idaho, where he served as student body president and met his future wife, Patricia. After graduation he worked as executive assistant to the director of the Idaho Department of Lands before joining the Idaho Home Builders Association as the executive vice president.

Kempthorne is survived by his wife, as well as their children Heather and Jeff and their families.

Shocking Twist: A Phone Call Unravels the Mystery of a Businessman’s Tragic Home Invasion

0

The tragic and violent death of Robert Chae, a respected Korean American entrepreneur, has left a profound impact on his community, filling it with fear and uncertainty.

“This crime’s sheer brutality distinguished it,” remarked retired Detective Chris McMullin during an episode of “Philly Homicide” aired on April 25. “The revelation of the truth behind it was truly shocking for all of us.”

In January 2009, the tranquility of Robert and Janice Chae’s North Wales residence was shattered when Janice made a frantic call to the police. She reported that three armed men, unmasked, had burst into their home, initiating a terrifying ordeal. While Janice managed to escape to a neighbor’s house to seek help, her husband and their adult children were held captive by the intruders.

Police arrived swiftly, only to find that the perpetrators had already fled the scene. They discovered the Chae children alive but restrained with duct tape. Tragically, Robert was found in a dire state; his head was heavily wrapped in tape, leaving only his nose uncovered, and his hands were cruelly bound with zip ties.

The children were found alive, bound with duct-tape, but it was too late for Robert. His head was wrapped in tape, leaving only his nose exposed, and his hands were zip tied behind his back.

“I didn’t understand why it was necessary to duct tape his head so many times,” said retired Montgomery County Detective Michael Santarelli. “They wrapped his head so many times that it looked like they used an entire roll of duct tape.”

Janice told police that one man beat Robert and held him in the garage, while the others forced Janice into the house, demanding access to their safe. They ultimately fled with $20,000 in cash, jewelry and purses.

But, something didn’t add up: Why would the intruders risk their faces being seen? How did they know the family kept a safe? Those questions would later take the investigation down an even darker path.

Who Was Robert Chae?

Although Robert grew up poor in South Korea, he believed in the American Dream and went on to become the owner of a beauty supply store in Philadelphia. He also tried to pay it forward, hiring people experiencing homelessness.

His death came at a time when Asian American hate crimes were increasingly high, according to former Delaware County Assistant District Attorney Pearl Kim.

“They were specifically targeting Asian people because they believed that Asians were more likely to carry cash, have cash in their home and less likely to notify police,” said Kim, “because of a language barrier or some other cultural barrier.”

Robert’s autopsy revealed that he died of asphyxiation from his own blood, which reinforced the brutality of the attack.

“Because his face was taped,” said Santarelli, “there was no place for the blood to go but down his throat.”

Clue Emerges in Robert Chae’s Murder Case

As investigators dug deeper, small clues began to stand out. Janice recalled the intruders were talking to each other on their phones from different floors of the house. As detectives analyzed phone records in the area, a sketch artist created composites of the men’s faces.

Meanwhile, Janice and her kids sought refuge with Robert’s sister, her husband and Robert’s nephew Angelo Shin, who lived with the Chaes for a year while his parents were abroad.

Then came a break in the case that changed everything.

A garbage collector reported seeing an SUV with three people circling Chae’s block days before the murder. Investigators then identified three numbers linked to burner phones that were in regular communication around the time of the murder.

Detectives were shocked to discover that one number belonged to Angelo.

Why Did Angelo Shin Kill Robert Chae?

When Angelo was called into the police station for questioning, he was distraught and devastated.

“Guilt ridden as Mr. Shin was,” his defense attorney David Mischak said, “he immediately came clean about what he had done.”

Police said Angelo had become friendly with a local named Joseph Page, whom he tried to impress by saying he could get their hands on $100,000.

Angelo told police that the robbery wasn’t serious—but it was too late, as Joseph alerted five of his friends, Amatadi Latham, Robert Eatman, Karre Pitts, Julius Wise and Sybil White. Three would go inside, while others waited as drivers. Everyone would get a cut.

Angelo told police that no one was supposed to get hurt and, in fact, when he asked Joseph why he killed Robert, he suggested that it was Robert’s fault for fighting back.

In 2010, Robert, Sybil and Julius pleaded guilty to third-degree murder while the rest went on trial. The group received individual prison sentences ranging from four years to life, except for Karre who was acquitted.

Angelo pleaded guilty to third-degree murder and received 20 to 40 years.

“He’s where he belongs,” said Robert’s coworker Marianne DiRuocco. “Angelo made adult decisions and I believe Angelo [has] to pay for them.”

Test Your Core: Achieve Elite Strength with This Plank Challenge for Those Over 55

0

Planks serve as an outstanding measure of core strength and overall physical fitness.

To enhance your strength regimen, consider incorporating planks into your exercise routine. This exercise requires maintaining a straight line from head to heels, working against gravity. By doing so, you simultaneously engage muscles in your back, abs, shoulders, hips, and legs. Planks are particularly effective for improving core strength and stability. We consulted Coach Amanda Grimm, a certified Running Coach with UK Athletics, a qualified Personal Trainer, and an international We Run Coach with a Bachelor’s Degree in Sports Science, to find out how long individuals over 55 should hold a plank to gauge elite core strength.

Many might find planks daunting and underestimate their ability to hold the position with minimal practice. Grimm suggests that a challenging yet attainable goal is to hold a plank for about 60 seconds. Achieving a plank hold of two minutes or more could qualify those aged 55 and above for “elite” status.

This Plank Hold Time Signals “Elite” Core Strength

Some may feel intimidated by planks and completely underestimate how long they’re able to hold one with little practice. According to Grimm, a challenging yet solid benchmark to strive for would be roughly 60 seconds. Holding a plank for two minutes or more would be considered “elite” status for those 55 and up.

“Posture is just as important as duration, though, and so the gold standard would be if the person held a perfectly formed plank, rather than showing any dipping or sagging,” Grimm points out.

Why the Plank Is a Productive Benchmark for Core Strength

A straight-arm plank recruits your entire body rather than simply demonstrating arm or leg strength with one movement.

“It showcases whole system coordination, functional strength, and stamina,” Grimm says. “Core strength isn’t just important for fitness, but as we age, we need to focus on stability and balance to avoid injury—plank capabilities are normally a good indicator of general physical resilience—advantageous for daily function and also retaining performance in sports such as running.”

According to Grimm, the plank is a stellar move that reveals the strength of your “hidden muscles.” These are the ones that support your posture—the shoulder stabilizers, transverse abdominis, erector spinae, and glutes.

“The pelvic floor is also engaged during a plank, as well as your diaphragm, keeping your hips and ribs aligned,” Grimm adds.

How To Hold Your Planks for Longer

If you’re looking to improve your plank hold time, Grimm has you covered. It’s important not to over-challenge yourself, as this could lead to injury if you don’t already have solid strength in your wrists, shoulders, and core.

“Gently build up by increasing the time—aim for good posture over duration,” Grimm stresses. “Always make sure you lower yourself carefully and slowly, not only for increased control but to reduce injury. Aim to be consistent—try planking every other day, but only increasing the time by five seconds each time.”

How Often To Practice Planks

Holding planks three to four times a week is a great way to see noticeable improvements. Be sure to bump up the hold time by 5 seconds each session.

“It should be a case that it feels easy, before you increase the duration. It could be worth doing shorter stints twice per day, on those workout days. Ensure you have rest days so as not to cause injury,” Grimm says.
