Chef Accused of Fatally Attacking Wife with Multiple Objects in Hotel Room, Police Report

A celebrated university chef from Massachusetts is facing serious charges after allegedly murdering his wife. The 36-year-old chef is accused of brutally beating his 31-year-old wife to death in a campus hotel room, and he reportedly admitted to investigators that he used various objects in the assault with the intention of killing her.

On April 22, Jeffrey C. MacDonald was detained and charged with the murder of Emma MacDonald, his wife, following the discovery of her body in their room at Hotel UMass, located on the University of Massachusetts Amherst campus.

MacDonald faces additional allegations of assaulting a police officer during the arrest, which took place in the same hotel room.

According to a probable cause document cited by Law&Crime, officers from the UMass Amherst Police Department responded to an emergency call at Room 413 of the hotel around 7:42 p.m.

When authorities arrived, they were met with resistance from MacDonald, leading to what police described as “a violent struggle.” During this altercation, MacDonald allegedly hurled objects at the officers and repeatedly struck one of them in the face.

Once inside the room, officers discovered a woman, later identified as Emma MacDonald, suffering from severe injuries.

“Given the significant nature of the female”s injuries, it seemed apparent to investigators that her injuries had resulted from a violent assault,” the affidavit states.

MacDonald was taken into custody and later waived his Miranda rights before speaking with investigators.

During the interview, MacDonald admitted that he had “intentionally beaten” his wife to death using “his hands, feet, as well as a variety of other blunt objects,” and said “it was his intent to kill her in doing so,” according to the affidavit.

Authorities have not publicly detailed what led up to the killing.

MacDonald appeared in Eastern Hampshire District Court Thursday for his arraignment where he pleaded not guilty to both charges, according to a news release from the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office. District Judge Rebecca Michaels ordered MacDonald be held without bond.

Michaels also ordered MacDonald to undergo a competency evaluation to determine whether he is fit to stand trial.

The DA’s office further confirmed that, like her husband, Emma MacDonald was a UMass employee.

University Chancellor Javier Reyes described the killing as “heartbreaking and deeply unsettling,” noting that the victim was also a member of the campus community. He also emphasized there was “no ongoing threat to our campus or the community.”

According to a report from The Boston Globe, the mother of MacDonald’s two children, in September 2024, urged a judge to award her sole custody, alleging MacDonald had been physically and emotionally abusive to the kids, both of whom requested not to see him anymore.

“Children have been reporting verbal abuse from their father (yelling, being called names, swearing), witnessing demeaning verbal abuse between father & stepmother, and yesterday reported physical abuse,” the filing reportedly said. The mother also wrote that her oldest son claimed MacDonald “shoved him with full force into a table” and repeatedly hit him in the face.

Less than a year ago, MacDonald was named Chef of the Year by the American Culinary Federation, one of the industry’s highest honors.

MacDonald is currently scheduled to appear in court for a probable cause hearing on May 12.

Mamamia Founder Mia Freedman Unveils Bold Vision for Future Endeavors

Mia Freedman is taking a break from her podcast and possibly her leadership role at Mamamia, as she embarks on long service leave due to ‘burnout’ and persistent ‘online bullying’.

Freedman shared this unexpected news on her Mamamia Out Loud podcast last week, where she is joined by her daughter-in-law Jessie Stephens and Mamamia’s Head of Content, Holly Wainwright.

“I have some news. I am taking a few months off the show because I have been doing the show for more than 10 years now. It started as a weekly show. It’s now a daily show. That hasn’t even been my day job – my day job has been being the co-founder of Mamamia,” Freedman announced.

Freedman made the shock announcement last week on her Mamamia Out Loud podcast, which she hosts with her daughter-in-law Jessie Stephens and Mamamia’s Head of Content, Holly Wainwright.

‘I have some news. I am taking a few months off the show because I have been doing the show for more than 10 years now. It started as a weekly show. It’s now a daily show. That hasn’t even been my day job – my day job has been being the co-founder of Mamamia,’ she said.

‘I’ve not taken any time off and I didn’t take any time off – I think I had two weeks off when I had my youngest child – and I’ve obviously taken holidays.

‘I’m still going to be around. There’s 150 people working here and I feel like maybe I can step back for a little bit. I’m feeling the itch to go quiet and just work on some things of my own.’

Freedman added in her statement that she was feeling the pressure ‘as the face of the business’ and admitted she ‘has made mistakes’.

‘There’s a lot of pressure being the face of this business. It’s my face on the door and when things go wrong and we employ wonderful people who are all human, as I am, and humans make mistakes as I certainly do,’ she said.

It comes after Freedman appointed her 27-year-old son Luca Lavigne the company’s chief operating officer.

The news came as a shock to employees of the company, where there had already been a high staff turnover.

Luca’s wife Jessie Stephens was also employed by the company as an editorial assistant.

It led to significant online criticism of Mamamia, the media company that claims to capture ‘what women are talking about’.

Daily Mail is not suggesting Luca isn’t qualified for his job or that he’s not entitled to receive his salary, only that the issue caused disquiet in the Mamamia newsroom.

Luca had joined Mamamia as a content producer in 2016. He had no prior media experience, having worked as a Merivale bartender for four months after graduating from Sydney Grammar School in 2015.

However, it is not uncommon for junior positions to be awarded to people without industry experience, and Daily Mail does not suggest there was any nepotism at play.

Freedman attracted significant online derision about the decision to appoint her son COO and now frequently restricts commenting on her social media posts.

During her announcement last week, Stephens said her mother-in-law and boss was focusing on her ‘mental health’.

‘The internet’s a lot, and it’s a lot at the moment. I want to be smaller,’ Freedman added.

Freedman’s break from work also comes amid big changes to the Point Piper mansion she shares with her husband.

The couple recently got permission from Woollahra Council for a new three-level, flat-roofed dwelling as part of a $3.9million rebuild.

Freedman and her husband Jason Lavigne bought their sprawling 1910 home in the ritzy waterfront suburb for $12.75 million, after it last sold for just $6.1 million in 2013.

The luxury home boasts five bedrooms and four bathrooms and has lavish amenities including a party-sized cabana, a wet-edge pool and a sauna.

The non-waterfront property has a prime location near the Royal Motor Yacht Club, with picturesque views of Sydney Harbour.

Breakthrough in Decades-Old Cold Case Leads to Arrest in Execution-Style Murders of Couple in Front of Child

0

A man from Florida has been apprehended in connection with the execution-style murders of a couple, carried out in front of their young child, a case that has perplexed authorities for over 30 years. The arrest signifies a pivotal moment in resolving this longstanding mystery.

Federal officials detained 62-year-old William Antonio Solis in Tampa on Wednesday, as disclosed in a statement from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York. The news marks a significant advance in the pursuit of justice for the victims.

“For more than 30 years, this Bronx double murder has haunted a family and the people of New York,” remarked U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton in his statement. “That ends today.”

Luis Guerrero

On July 21, 1993, Luis Guerrero and his wife, Danis Sime, were brutally murdered in their Bronx apartment, a crime that left a lasting scar on their family and community.

Known by aliases such as “La Vega” and “Vegano,” Solis faces charges of intentionally killing the couple in connection with a narcotics operation, as detailed by federal prosecutors. His arrest brings hope for closure to those affected by this tragedy.

Authorities allege on July 21, 1993, Solis and two co-conspirators plotted a robbery of Guerrero, a narcotics supplier, at his Bronx apartment.

After Solis and the co-conspirators entered the residence, they allegedly bound Guerrero, stole his drugs and lured Sime into the apartment to restrain her as well, prosecutors said.

Solis then allegedly shot both Guerrero and Sime in an execution-style killing in front of their 3-year-old child, according to authorities.

At the time of the alleged murders, the couple’s young son told police that a man had pointed a gun at his mother, covered her head with a pillowcase and “took her away,” according to the New York Daily News.

Neighbors reportedly found the child crying for his parents outside the apartment complex.

“He was screaming, ‘Daddy, Daddy,’” neighbor Chris Anton previously told the outlet. “He was scared.”

“I tried to ask [the boy] some questions and all he would say was, ‘El Otro took his mother and put a cover over her head,” Anton reportedly added. “I bought him pizza, ice cream – anything he wanted.”

At the time of the alleged murders, police were reportedly investigating Guerrero’s possible drug connection, with neighbors telling the New York Daily News the couple were “nice, quiet people” and “never bothered anyone.”

Authorities did not release additional details regarding how investigators were led to Solis.

If convicted, Solis faces the possibility of the death penalty or life in prison, according to the DOJ.

“As alleged, William Solis spent decades hiding in plain sight more than a thousand miles from where he viciously murdered the Guerreros in front of their young child,” HSI Acting Special Agent in Charge Michael Alfonso said.

“This arrest is the result of years of meticulous investigative work by dedicated special agents and task force officers who refused to let this case go cold,” Alfonso added.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.

Discover the Surprising Benefits of Quitting Coffee for Just Two Weeks

0

Abstaining from coffee for a fortnight might reduce impulsivity and stress levels, with a switch to decaf potentially enhancing sleep quality and memory, according to recent research findings.

Researchers observed 62 healthy participants to explore coffee’s impact on mental and physical health. This cohort comprised 31 habitual coffee consumers and 31 non-coffee drinkers.

Initially, participants provided blood, urine, and stool samples for analysis.

They also participated in surveys assessing their mood and behavior, alongside memory and cognitive performance evaluations.

The coffee drinkers among the participants were instructed to completely cease coffee consumption for two weeks. Subsequently, they were randomly assigned to consume either caffeinated or decaffeinated coffee for an additional 21 days, with 16 receiving regular coffee and 15 opting for decaf.

Researchers then compared how participants changed during the withdrawal and re-introduction phases.

They found regular coffee drinkers experienced more impulsive behaviour and emotional reactivity than people who did not drink coffee.

But after coffee drinkers gave up their habit for a fortnight, both measures fell.

Quitting coffee for just two weeks may make people less impulsive and less stressed, while switching to decaf could improve sleep and memory, a study suggests

Quitting coffee for just two weeks may make people less impulsive and less stressed, while switching to decaf could improve sleep and memory, a study suggests

When coffee was re-introduced, the effects differed depending on the type consumed.

Participants given caffeinated coffee reported lower anxiety and psychological distress.

Those assigned decaf saw improvements in sleep quality, physical activity and memory scores.

Researchers said the findings suggest coffee may affect the body in ways that go well beyond the caffeine hit many drinkers rely on each morning.

The study, published this week in Nature Communications, was led by researchers at University College Cork in Ireland.

Alongside the behavioural findings, scientists also discovered that regular coffee drinkers had a distinctly different gut microbiome from non-drinkers.

The gut microbiome refers to the trillions of bacteria and other microbes living in the digestive system. Scientists increasingly believe it may help shape digestion, immunity, metabolism, mood and even brain health.

Some of the bacterial patterns seen in coffee drinkers began to shift back towards levels seen in non-drinkers after the two-week withdrawal period.

When coffee was re-introduced, both caffeinated and decaffeinated versions triggered fresh bacterial changes.

The team said this suggests some of coffee’s effects may come from naturally occurring plant compounds rather than caffeine alone.

These substances, known as phenolic acids, are antioxidants also found in fruit, vegetables and other plant foods.

Researchers also found signs coffee could influence inflammation.

At the start of the trial, regular coffee drinkers had lower levels of C-reactive protein, a common marker linked to inflammation in the body.

They also had higher levels of IL-10, an anti-inflammatory molecule.

When coffee was withdrawn, some inflammatory markers rose.

After coffee was reintroduced, both the caffeinated and decaf groups showed a reduced inflammatory response in laboratory testing.

However, the researchers stressed the study does not prove coffee directly causes better health, improved memory or changes in personality.

The trial was relatively small, involving only 62 people.

Some of the gains seen in memory tests may simply have reflected participants becoming more familiar with repeating the same tasks.

The authors also said the sample lacked sufficient diversity and may not have been large enough to detect more subtle effects.

Previous studies have linked moderate coffee intake to lower risks of type 2 diabetes, liver disease and some heart conditions.

But coffee can also worsen anxiety, palpitations and poor sleep in sensitive people, particularly when consumed in large amounts or late in the day.

The researchers said larger studies are now needed to confirm whether the microbial changes seen in coffee drinkers translate into meaningful long-term health benefits.

China’s Majestic Giant Pandas Set for New Home at Atlanta Zoo: A Cultural and Conservation Milestone

0

Atlanta is set to welcome giant pandas once again.

In a move marking a continuation of its renowned panda diplomacy, China announced on Friday that it would be sending two giant pandas to Zoo Atlanta. This decision comes even amidst existing tensions between Beijing and Washington, and just weeks before U.S. President Donald Trump is scheduled to embark on a highly anticipated visit to China.

The China Wildlife Conservation Association released a statement confirming that male panda Ping Ping and female panda Fu Shuang, both from the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, will be part of a decade-long conservation partnership with Zoo Atlanta. This initiative stems from an agreement signed with the zoo last year, aiming to foster conservation efforts between the two nations.

While the exact departure date for the pandas has not been disclosed, preparations are well underway. The U.S. is actively working on upgrading facilities to ensure a comfortable and secure habitat for the new arrivals. Meanwhile, Chinese experts are playing an advisory role, providing technical guidance to enhance these facilities.

This announcement coincides with President Trump’s upcoming visit to China in mid-May, where he plans to engage in discussions on a variety of topics, including trade, with Chinese President Xi Jinping. The timing of the pandas’ arrival may add a layer of diplomatic goodwill to the high-stakes talks between the two leaders.

Zoo Atlanta said in a statement Thursday that it was delighted and honored to be trusted as stewards of the pandas and to partner with the association.

“We can’t wait to meet Ping Ping and Fu Shuang and to welcome our members, guests, city, and community back to the wonder and joy of giant pandas,” the zoo’s president, Raymond B. King, said.

During an earlier giant panda agreement between the zoo and China that concluded in 2024, pandas Lun Lun and Yang Yang gave birth to seven bears, the zoo said. Lun Lun and Yang Yan and their two youngest offspring left Atlanta for China in October 2024, where the rest of their offspring reside, it said.

China’s giant panda loan program has long been known as a tool of Beijing’s soft-power diplomacy, but its conservation significance could have been an important reason Beijing is renewing its cooperation with US zoos at a time of otherwise sour relations.

The association said Friday that the new round of cooperation will help China and the US to yield more results in areas ranging from disease prevention and treatment to scientific exchanges.

Giant pandas have long been a symbol of the US-China friendship, ever since Beijing gifted a pair of pandas to the National Zoo in Washington in 1972.

In 2024, the National Zoo in Washington and the San Diego Zoo also received pandas from China.

Chicago Bears Secure Oregon Safety Dillon Thieneman with 25th Pick in 2026 NFL Draft’s First Round

CHICAGO (WLS) — On Thursday night, the Chicago Bears made a significant move by choosing Dillon Thieneman, a safety from Oregon, as the 25th overall pick in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft.

Thieneman, originally from Indiana, also showcased his skills during his time at Purdue.

At Soldier Field, a buzz of excitement filled the air as Bears enthusiasts were eager for the team to bolster their already impressive lineup with a key addition.

ABC7 Chicago is now streaming 24/7. Click here to watch

Thursday night saw Soldier Field transform into a hub of football festivities, hosting a draft watch party that celebrated all things gridiron.

Chicago fans warmly welcomed Thieneman’s selection, recognizing the need to reinforce the Bears’ defense, and expressing optimism about the impact he could bring.

Fans at the watch party had a chance to get an autograph from current and former players, like Anthony “Spice” Adams and D’Marco Jackson.

“Get to the playoffs and win. Super Bowl,” Adams said. “Why not? Why not us?”

The draft is ushering a season of high expectations after the Monsters of the Midway nearly made it to the NFC championship game last season.

“Optimistic,” Bears fan Vanessa Linares said. “I think we had a great last season, and I’m hoping that we can push the boundaries even more and farther this year.”

“We finally got a good coach,” Bears fan Phil Better said. “We finally got a good QB, and I Iove our GM.”

On a postcard perfect night. at Soldier Field, fans also weighed in on the Bears stadium race between Arlington Heights and Hammond, Indiana.

“Arlington,” Bears fan Eri Abdiel said. “Indiana’s a little bit… they got Indianapolis Colts.”

“Go to Arlington. I can’t imagine the Bears in Indiana. No, no chance,” Bears fan Acy Binford said. “Arlington. Forever, for now, whatever.”

In fairness, ABC7 was not able to find a lot of fans here from Northwest Indiana who might have had a different opinion. Fans here were unified, however, in saying this team has Super Bowl potential.

When it comes to choosing a direction in the NFL draft, the Chicago Bears have some flexibility. And if they can replicate last year’s success, they’ll really be in good shape.

“We feel prepared. We put in the time,” general manager Ryan Poles said on Tuesday. “When we’re on the clock, I’ve got a ton of confidence things are going to work out just the way we planned them to be. If things start to shift and move, we’re agile enough to make adjustments if that’s moving up, moving back, we’ll be ready for anything that comes our way.”

The Bears have seven picks in the draft as they try to build on a breakthrough season.

Chicago went from finishing last in the NFC North to capturing the division championship with an 11-6 record in coach Ben Johnson’s first year. Quarterback Caleb Williams made big strides in his second season and threw for a franchise-record 3,942 yards.

The Bears advanced in the playoffs for the first time in 15 years by beating the rival Green Bay Packers in a wild-card game before losing an overtime thriller to the Los Angeles Rams in the divisional round.

It was quite a ride for the team and the fans. A big part of that success was what happened on draft weekend, and the Bears hope to do it again.

Poles drafted four big contributors on offense last year. He took tight end Colston Loveland with the No. 10 pick, added receiver Luther Burden and offensive lineman Ozzy Trapilo in the second round and selected running back Kyle Monangai in the seventh.

Loveland led Chicago in receptions (58) and yards (713) and tied for the team lead in touchdown catches (six). Trapilo played in 14 regular-season games before tearing the patella tendon in his left knee in the wild-card win over Green Bay, an injury that is expected to keep him out for most of next season.

The speedy Burden had 652 yards receiving, and Monangai ran for 783 while forming a productive tandem with D’Andre Swift.

Can this year’s picks have a similar impact, particularly on the defense?

“Colston Loveland shows up every week,” assistant general manager Jeff King said. “Luther Burden shows up in big games at critical moments. Kyle Monangai carried the load when we had to lean on him. Right? That goes to more the character than the talent. And they’re really talented. So. Yeah, if it lines up like that defensively, sure. But we’re going to have to not lean on last year. We have to divorce ourselves from that success and start over.”

The Bears had just 35 sacks last season. Their only player in double digits was Montez Sweat with 10, and no one else had more than six.

Chicago also lost its top four safeties in free agency, including three-time All-Pro Kevin Byard and Jaquan Brisker. The Bears did sign former Seattle Seahawk Coby Bryant, but they could still use help there.

King said they won’t necessarily be drafting for need.

“If it’s equal, the need may come into play here or there,” he said. “But at the end of the day, you’re not going to go wrong by taking the best football player. I think we all agree with that.”

BBC’s ‘Crazy’ Decision: Why Axing Football Focus Amid Declining Viewership and Woke Controversy is Sparking Outrage

0

The BBC’s recent decision to cancel “Football Focus” has been met with disbelief, particularly from a former host who described the move as “crazy.”

Bob Wilson, who helmed the beloved sports program from 1974 to 1994, expressed his shock and disappointment over the termination of what he considers an iconic show that has been part of British culture for 52 years.

The decision comes in the wake of declining viewership and criticism suggesting that the current format, led by host Alex Scott, is “pedestrian, vacuous, uninspiring, and uninformative.” These challenges have prompted the BBC to plan a replacement for the next season.

“I’ve always made it a point to watch the show whenever possible,” Wilson shared. “I cherished knowing it resonated with the next generation. Now, at 84, it feels like losing a significant part of my life and that of many football fans. It’s truly disappointing news.”

He further lamented, “The BBC’s plan to replace it with an interview show exploring what makes footballers tick seems a rather strange decision.”

‘People want to be told about the big games of the weekend, the issues, the news of the week, discussion, covering a range of clubs and personalities.’

Wilson played 310 times in goal for Arsenal before transitioning to broadcasting when he retired.

He presented Football Focus while still working as a coach for the Gunners and had high-profile interviews with the likes of Gary Lineker and Sir Alex Ferguson, while also facing challenges such as navigating his way through the unfolding Hillsborough disaster that claimed the lives of 97 Liverpool fans.

The decision to axe the show was announced on Thursday afternoon and the sentiment online appeared to disagree with Wilson’s view.

One posted on X: ‘Good – it’s been an awful woke joke for years. #defundtheBBC’

Another wrote: ‘Go woke, go broke!’

Fans on social media appear to see the cancellation as a good thing and the show had come in for plenty of criticism in recent years.

Writing in the Daily Mail in March 2024, Simon Jordan added that the show had become ‘too smug, comfortable and pally-pally’ as debate raged over why a gay West Brom supporter had been invited on to talk about his sexuality.

Former pundit and BBC regular Mark Lawrenson, meanwhile, has argued that the channel is ‘top of the woke league’ following a rebrand that saw him lose his job.

Fans have been split on Scott’s role since she took over from Dan Walker in 2021, with one writing on social media following Thursday’s news that she was ‘the death knell’ of the show.

BBC Sport chief Alex Kay-Jelski, however, has been quick to defend the former England women’s footballer. Announcing the end of the show in a statement on Thursday, he said Scott is ‘one of our finest presenters, is hugely popular across the men and women’s game and is a big part of our present and future’.

Scott has insisted she was going to leave Football Focus had the BBC not scrapped the iconic football show as she broke her silence with an Instagram statement on Thursday.

‘I always knew this would be my last season on the show, which the BBC were aware of too’, she wrote.

‘My intention was to move quietly into the next chapter, but sometimes things change.

‘When this show began all those years ago, social media wasn’t a driving force, podcasts didn’t exist, and there was no instant access to information in the way there is today. Now, by the time we go on air, the reality is you’ve already seen it, debated it, and lived it across so many platforms. That shift has changed the whole industry. TV audiences have been declining for years, while digital and on-demand viewing continues to grow.’

Scott’s predecessor, Dan Walker, hit out at the news with a thinly-veiled dig at his former employer.

‘Really sad to hear about the end of Football Focus,’ he tweeted. ‘I loved that show growing up. I used to watch it every week with my dad and I remember how proud he was when I got the job.

‘It was such a privilege to sit in the chair for 12 years, work with an amazing team on and off air and form so many lasting friendships. Saturdays were always special.

‘The football landscape is constantly changing and it’s disappointing that there isn’t space for a show that has meant so much to so many people for so many years.’

Pre-Covid pandemic viewing figures averaged 957,000 for Football Focus, and reached 1.12 million during the 2020-21 season. In the 2022-23 campaign, though, numbers were as low as 687,000.

Last week the BBC announced that it would cut up to 2,000 jobs in a bid to save money in what will be its biggest downsize in 15 years.

Staff were informed of the cuts on Wednesday last week, with around 10 per cent of employees to lose their jobs.

Hillsborough County Faces Challenges in Meeting Rays’ Deadline, Seeks Clarification from Team

In Tampa, Florida, Hillsborough County has expressed concerns about meeting the Tampa Bay Rays’ impending deadline for a new project agreement. The county has indicated that there are numerous questions that need addressing before any deal can be finalized.

Among the key issues is the need for a detailed timeline for project completion. However, officials noted that they cannot establish this timeline until a consensus is reached on the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). They estimate that negotiations on the agreement could require an additional 60 to 90 days after the MOU is approved.

  • Define the specific time that ownership of the stadium will be transferred to the county.
  • How was the stadium budget determined?
  • Since TIF funding is based upon the value of the entire mixed-use development in the proposed Stadium District, what is the minimum valuation needed to be created for the Rays and their development partner(s) to meet the threshold for CRA bonds to be issued by the City’s CRA?
  • Describe how the Rays determined the percentage of public funds that will go toward specific areas and/or amenities in the stadium and surrounding grounds.
  • Provide a detailed timeline or schedule for when all private and public funding sources will be used during construction of the stadium.
  • Describe the plan to obtain additional private funding if the total private and public funding is not sufficient to cover all necessary construction costs of the stadium.
  • What are the private funding sources for the Rays portion of the stadium construction?
  • What is the plan for how the Rays intend to provide parking for ballgames and special events?

Experts in development warn that any delay might pose significant risks.

“Extending the negotiation period by 60 to 90 days beyond June 1 could give other regions a chance to present compelling proposals to the Rays,” explained John Boyd, a development consultant. “This could include offers from other parts of Central Florida that have available 100-plus acre sites ideal for the stadium and mixed-use development, potentially in areas that are more open to the public-private financing model.”

“Extending this another 60 to 90 days beyond June 1 invites other markets to really make a strong pitch to the Rays ownership,” said John Boyd, a development consultant. “You invite other areas in Central Florida to present an attractive 100 plus acre site that could accommodate the stadium, as well as the mixed-use development and potentially in a market that is less hesitant and more supportive of the public-private financing model.”

Boyd said a possible scenario is a scaled down deal addressing the stadium first, then mixed-use development financing second.

In a statement, the Rays said: “We are working diligently on the list of questions provided to us by the county and city and will share our responses with them soon. With the right public-private partnership, we can build a world-class ballpark by 2029 and remain focused on doing so.”

“With a big deal come big questions,” said Alan Clendenin, a Tampa City Councilmember.

The city won’t make a decision until the county does. Clendenin reminded the public during a council meeting Thursday that this is a fluid situation, and that negotiations are just starting.

“Nothing is baked. And even that date, June 1, it’s a target. I don’t necessarily know that anybody’s holding anybody’s feet to the fire on any one given date,” said Clendenin.

But the lack of information from the team made Councilwoman Lynn Hurtak motion to reschedule the May 5 meeting with the Rays and the public. She rescinded the motion but noted her concerns accusing the team of “not moving.”

Councilmember Charlie Miranda said with the cost of living, gas, and everything else, he feels the public should decide.

“You’re not talking about a couple of dollars. You’re talking about a billion plus dollars. So that’s a lot of money… It’s up to the public,” Miranda said. “I would like to see the public take a vote, public vote on it, because they’re the ones that are paying the bill.”

There’s a $75 million dollar gap that is unclear where the funding will come from. Rays CEO Ken Babby told commissioners ahead of a workshop if the commitment is not achievable, the team would have no choice but to evaluate alternatives, but it’s not their desired outcome.

Hillsborough County Commissioner Chris Boles sent 8 On Your Side this statement:

“I have full confidence in Bonnie and Julia to bring forward a deal that makes sense for the taxpayers. Mrs. Mandell’s response makes clear the Rays proposal is still far from a final deal. As was stated during the April 15 BOCC meeting, the MOU will not look the same, and this feedback proves that point. There are still a number of unresolved questions involving private funding, taxpayer protections, construction oversight, mixed-use development obligations, and the long-term return to the public. Bottom line: this is not the ninth inning, it’s still batting practice. The public side is doing exactly what it should be doing, demanding stronger safeguards, full transparency, and a deal that truly makes financial sense before any commitment is made.”

NTSB Reveals Controller Choices and Tech Glitches in Fatal Runway Crash

A recent federal investigation has uncovered multiple failures in safety protocols that contributed to a tragic runway accident at New York’s LaGuardia Airport last month. The report highlights missteps in air traffic control, lapses in communication, and technological shortcomings.

On March 22, around 11:37 p.m., Jazz Aviation Flight 646, operating under Air Canada as Flight 8646, collided with an airport rescue vehicle during landing at LaGuardia. This collision resulted in the loss of the two pilots’ lives and left many others injured, as detailed in the report.

The preliminary findings from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) released on Thursday indicate that the local controller in the air traffic control tower, identified in the report as the “LC,” authorized an airport rescue vehicle to cross an active runway. This decision was made even as a regional jet was nearing its final approach.

At the moment of the incident, the aircraft was approximately a quarter-mile from the runway and descending to land at about 130 feet above the ground.

Seconds later, the controller instructed the vehicle to stop, but the warning came too late as the aircraft touched down and continued down the runway.

Investigators pointed to confusion over radio communications that may have delayed the truck crew’s response.

“The turret operator in Truck 1 recalled hearing the words ‘stop stop stop’ (on the tower frequency) radio, but he did not know who that transmission was intended for,” the report states. “He subsequently heard ‘Truck 1 stop stop stop’ and realized it was for them and subsequently noticed that they had entered the runway.

“He further recalled that as they turned left, he saw the airplane’s lights on the runway,” the report added.

There were two controllers on duty at the time of the crash, consistent with normal staffing levels, and both were experienced and qualified for their positions.

But the tower was handling multiple issues simultaneously, including an aircraft that had performed two rejected takeoffs and a separate ground emergency near a terminal.

As the situation unfolded, the “LC” took over transmitting instructions on both ground and tower frequencies.

The report also highlights significant limitations in the airport’s safety systems.

The airport’s surface detection system, known as ASDE-X, is designed to track aircraft and ground vehicles and alert controllers to potential runway conflicts.

“Multiple ground vehicles, none of which were equipped with transponders, were intermittently detected as radar targets,” the report read. “At the time of the accident, ASDE-X displayed only two radar targets on taxiway D (near taxiway BB), rather than all seven of the response vehicles as distinct targets at their respective locations.

“A review of the ASDE-X system data by the FAA determined that the system did not generate an aural or visual alert on the ASDE-X displays in the LGA ATC tower to warn controllers of the potential runway conflict.”

The NTSB also found that another layer of protection failed to prevent the crash.

Runway entrance lights, known as RELs, are designed to warn vehicles not to cross when an aircraft is approaching.

“A review of airport surveillance video recordings revealed that the RELs illuminated for the arrival of the accident airplane, as Truck 1 and company were stationary in the vicinity of the taxiway AA and taxiway D intersection,” the report said, noting the trucks were located about 300 feet away from runway 4.

“The RELs on taxiway D remained illuminated until about the time Truck 1 reached the (near) edge of runway, when they extinguished, about 3 seconds prior to the collision.”

The report does not indicate whether the truck crew saw or reacted to the warning lights.

Taken together, investigators suggest the crash was not caused by a single error, but by a breakdown across multiple safeguards — including human decision-making, communication clarity and technological support systems.

The collision killed both pilots aboard the aircraft and injured dozens of passengers and emergency responders.

The report describes a chaotic but ultimately orderly evacuation after the crash.

“The aft flight attendant reported getting in the aft jump seat for landing and described the flight as normal until he felt an impact and jar,” the report read. “He did not know what had happened and attempted to call the pilots and received no response. He reported the conditions were dark, but passengers deplaned orderly through all exits.”

Investigators said the debris field was roughly 300 feet long and 150 feet wide and was documented using drone imaging, GPS mapping and laser scanning technology.

The preliminary investigation also found that the most severe damage was concentrated at the front of the aircraft, with the cockpit and forward cabin sustaining significant structural destruction.

The report found that while the forward section was heavily crushed, the passenger cabin remained largely intact, with most seats still secured and only minor damage reported throughout much of the aircraft.

The NTSB said the information in the report is preliminary and subject to change.
