Chris Briney Discusses His On-Screen Chemistry with Jean Smart, Emulating a Harry Styles Persona, and His “Fake It Till You Make It” Approach to Singing on ‘Hacks

Chris Briney is swapping the familiar sands of the Fisher beach house in The Summer I Turned Pretty for the bright lights of the Las Vegas Strip in the upcoming season of Hacks. His enthusiasm for the new role is palpable.

**Warning: Spoilers ahead for Hacks Season 5, Episode 3, available now on HBO Max**

Having portrayed Conrad Fisher for three seasons on the Prime Video hit, Briney is venturing into uncharted territory alongside Deborah Vance, played by Jean Smart. In this Emmy-winning comedy, he takes on the character of Nico Hayes, a tattooed international pop sensation who bears a resemblance to Harry Styles. Nico’s immediate fascination with Deborah mirrors Briney’s own attraction to the show, despite the requirement for him to sing.

“It’s Hacks—how could you possibly turn that down?” Briney remarked to DECIDER, expressing his willingness to overcome his well-known reluctance to sing for the opportunity to appear in one of the most acclaimed comedies in recent history. Notably, Briney also appeared in the 2024 Mean Girls movie-musical, despite initially skipping auditions that demanded singing performances. For Hacks, he embraced the challenge.

Briney admitted to DECIDER that the singing scenes were filmed last, minimizing the risk of recasting. “I thought, ‘Once we get to that point, I’ll deal with it then,'” he explained, even confessing to the casting director that he could sing, with a playful nod to the adage, “Fake it till you make it.”

As for finding his inner Harry Styles and getting in character to make out with Jean Smart — a kiss he tells DECIDER will go down “in the history books” for him — the actor spilled all the details on stepping into this world and getting to play in the sandbox with the cast and crew behind his favorite show.

To read all about his transformation, his hopes for getting to do more comedy in the future, and yes, getting to share some passionate on-screen kisses with Smart, check out DECIDER’s full interview with The Summer I Turned Pretty alum below.

DECIDER: Let’s start with this, we know that Nico is a huge fan of Deborah, you seem to be a fan of Hacks, how did this happen for you?

CHRIS BRINEY: I mean, hard not to be a fan of Hacks in this day and age. I think I came to the party a little bit late, all my friends were like, ‘Oh, this show is so good,’ and maybe second or third season I turned it on and I was like, ‘All right, I gotta watch. It was like Succession. I didn’t start at Season 1, but at the time I turned it on, I was like, ‘This is my new identity.’ I’m a big fan of the show and the job came about super quickly. I had a Zoom audition and I was like, super rushed. I got home, I hopped on a Zoom, and they were like, “Do you sing?” And I was like, “Yes.” Fake it till you make it. We read a few scenes and times ended up working out, and then I was in Vegas with them for a few weeks with them. Super weird, super cool.

You’ve said in the past that you’re not a singer, pretty famously, actually. What made you say yes to this?

It’s Hacks, how do you say no to that? If you have an opportunity to do an episode of one of the greatest comedies of the past however many decades, you do it, you figure it out. Thankfully, that’s the last thing to shoot, so it would be hard to recast me. I was like, “By the time we get there, I’ll figure it out when I have to.”

What did you think of [the song] Summer Squash?

Yeah, it’s great. I mean, it’s a good nod to other pop songs we may know. I think it tracks with like sort of who he is and it was fun to record. I haven’t heard the version with my vocals keyed in. It was cool, I’ve never recorded a song and they take it seriously.

Have you gotten to see the episode yet?

Not yet, not yet. I don’t always love watching myself anyway, so. And I think I’ll have to because it’s, I don’t know, it’s sort of a dream show to be on, but so far I’m just I’m taking people’s word for it.

Well, you are great and the inspirations to a certain pop star are certainly there. How much agency and guidance did the team give you on that and bringing him from page to screen?

I played a lot of it off the page, and I think in comedy, a lot of it lives in the room. I did my share of work, I usually do like journaling and stuff and I had the question from day one, I was like: Who is this guy? Is it Mick Jagger or Harry Styles? And I think my answer is more that he’s sort of like a blend of a bunch of these guys. He has sort of like an old rock and roll kind of swagger, but he’s got that young but lived-life feel that a lot of these younger pop stars have now have had to deal with. Just with the early rise and all that stuff that comes with being young and famous.

Considering that you might know a thing or two about that, especially the crazy paparazzi bit, how did you relate to this character?

I mean, I think that that’s pretty accessible in a lot of ways. Like, I value my privacy and I respect that. He values his privacy. And I think a big key to at least his character in this episode is, is that he wants to be able to live his life without interruption. And he’s found a way to do that, and he’s found mechanisms and put them, you know, like when he rents out the restaurant like this, like we’re going to have privacy and I have the money to, like, give us this privacy and the way that that’s sort of shattered by outside forces, I think. I think it’s really hard because he’s like, “No, I’ve worked to live this private life and I’ve worked to enjoy my privacy.”

I have to say, I absolutely love it when someone who’s part of a huge project that is like a cultural phenomenon breaks out of that and does something — and don’t take this the wrong way — a little bit weird. Something unexpected, something fun. And I feel like you did that here.

That makes me happy to hear, I love the weird shit.

Okay, good. Does this open the door for you to explore more comedy? You’re really funny.

I would love to. Yes, give me the job and I’ll go crazy. No, I was thinking about it — I think about it a lot, actually, — I grew up loving comedy, and I think a lot of the movies my dad raised me on were old comedies, and it’s just a joy to work in that space. And the set they have for Hacks, it’s just creative and collaborative and fun and they’re there for the weird, you know?

Yeah, and it’s so fun to watch, especially that first scene where Nico notices Deborah. There was instant magnetism. What was it that clicked for him?

I think it’s sort of that he just sees her being her and sees her being unapologetic. I think those are things that Nico admires, and it’s exactly why wires get crossed by the end of the episode, because he probably places some sort of expectations on her. But I think he just sees her being cool as fuck and he’s like, “You’re just you. And like, you’re owning your space.” And obviously, he’s keyed into at least some of the lure of Deborah Vance. It seems easy for me, too, because her whole career is based on her being her. And I see Nico as a character who’s just trying to be himself, and he admires that.

When you first got the audition, how much of it was described for you? Did you know you would be making out with Jean Smart from the jump?

No, I didn’t I didn’t know that until I read the script, at least that explicitly. All I had were like the two dinner scenes if I’m remembering correctly, but they didn’t go as far as like the kisses. I read the script and I was like, “This is a great episode of TV. It’s really funny.”

And how was it getting to work with Jean in that way?

She’s a fucking legend, dude. She’s so sweet and she took so much time to just chat and be a warm person, you know? I guess I expected to come into a show on its fifth season and, you know, sit in my chair and go when they call me, and that’s fine. I have no problem with that. But she made the time to just sort of like sit and chat. And it helped a lot to just feel like I was a part of it, instead of just visiting for a few days.

I talked with Jen, Paul, and Lucia and we’re worried some of your fans might just be tuning in for your episode. Please take this opportunity to make the case for watching the show.

No, start season one, episode one. It’s one of the most important shows out there and one of the funniest shows of all time. I mean, if there’s a list of comedy TV shows, you could argue it’s probably fucking top five. It’s so good and the performances speak for themselves and it’s just so fresh and it’s so funny, there’s nothing better. So do not just tune into one episode. That’s ridiculous. That’s ridiculous. You’ll miss out on five seasons of laughs.

Chris, I’ll wrap with this really quickly. I don’t think it’s any competition: Is Jean Smart your number one kiss of all time?

[Laughs] Jean is a fucking legend, dude. She’s one of the sweetest. That’s one for the history books.

Heart-Wrenching Courtroom Drama: Tanner Horner’s Mother Speaks Out on Athena Strand’s Tragic Murder

0

In an emotional courtroom moment on April 22, the mother of FedEx driver Tanner Horner broke down while speaking about her son’s role in the murder of Athena Strand.

“I am so mad at him. I want to just tear his ass up,” she said through tears, as reported by CBS News. “She was just a baby.”

Earlier this month, on April 7, Horner admitted guilt to charges of capital murder and kidnapping in connection with the tragic death of the 7-year-old. Now, the jury must decide whether he will face the death penalty or spend life in prison for the crime committed in 2022.

The incident occurred on November 30, 2022, when Horner stopped at Strand’s home in Wise County, Texas, to deliver a package. He then kidnapped the young girl, placing her in his truck and driving away. Tragically, her body was later found in a nearby river.

Tanner Horner’s Mother Describes Bullying, Mental Health Problems

With the prosecution having concluded their case last week, the court reconvened on April 22, allowing the defense to present their arguments for sparing Horner’s life.

His mother—referred to in court only as Mrs. Horner—took the stand to describe her own difficult upbringing, plagued with alleged abuse by her stepfather and early drug use.

The high school dropout told the court, per NBC DFW, that she had been working as a stripper, doing drugs and drinking “pretty heavily” when she discovered she was eight weeks pregnant with Horner.

Though she quit drinking, Mrs. Horner testified that she continued to smoke during the pregnancy.

Mrs. Horner—who explained that she’d been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and schizoaffective disorder—also testified that she struggled with an addiction to meth and heroin during his childhood, per NBC DFW.

“I nodded out one time, on the toilet,” she told the court, according to the news outlet. “Tanner came in. He was just a little guy, and, he thought I was dead.”

Mrs. Horner told jurors that her son was bullied by his peers growing up and struggled to connect to others, eventually getting diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome.

“He didn’t get along with… I mean, he wanted to get along with people, but they just weren’t interested in having conversations with him,” she said, per NBC DFW. “It was hard to watch. Very sad. They didn’t like him at all.”

When she learned that Horner would become a father himself, she testified, according to CBS News, she was happy, but worried about the financial issues that already strained the relationship between Horner and his girlfriend.

Tanner Horner’s Mother Apologized in Court For Son’s Actions

While admitting to being “so mad” after learning that her son killed Strand, Mrs. Horner told the court that she still loved her son.

“Of course, I love my son,” she told his defense attorneys, per the news outlet. “I don’t love who did that, though. I don’t know who that was.”

When cross-examined by prosecutors, she told the court that she had initially believed the story her son had told her that he’d abducted the little girl and then panicked and strangled her.

However, she said she later watched the livestream of earlier court proceedings in which jurors heard audio of Horner telling Strand “you’re really pretty,” and asking her to remove her shirt, according to The Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

At one point, “Jingle Bell Rock” could be heard playing on the radio, as Strand screamed and Horner threatened to hurt her more if she didn’t shut up, the outlet reported.

When prosecutors asked now what Mrs. Horner thought of her son’s claims, she replied, according to CBS News, “I don’t know what to say, I’m so sorry.”

Investigation Uncovers Safety Lapse Behind Fatal LaGuardia Airport Plane Crash

0

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has released a startling report highlighting a critical oversight that possibly contributed to last month’s tragic accident at LaGuardia Airport in New York. This incident involved an Air Canada Express plane and resulted in the loss of two lives and numerous injuries when the aircraft collided with a firetruck that had been cleared to cross the runway.

According to the preliminary findings, which are still under review, the absence of a transponder on the firetruck was a significant factor in the crash. This lack of equipment meant that an automatic alert system was unable to detect the vehicle’s dangerous path towards the incoming aircraft.

The report noted, “Without transponder-equipped vehicles, the ASDE-X system could not uniquely identify each of the seven responding vehicles or reliably determine their positions, or tracks.” This deficiency prevented the system from alerting officials to the potential collision between the plane and the firetruck, referred to as Truck 1, or any of the other emergency vehicles present.

Consequently, the automated system failed to predict the impending conflict with the landing airplane, revealing a grave flaw in runway safety protocols. As investigations continue, the NTSB’s findings underscore the urgent need for enhanced safety measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.

‘As a result, the system was unable to correlate the track of the airplane with the track of Truck 1 (or any of the other vehicles in the group) and did not predict a potential conflict with the landing airplane. ‘

Truck 1, which was struck by the plane, was one of seven vehicles that were not equipped with transponders and were responding to a United Airlines flight reporting a strange odor.

That night, two air traffic controllers were working the night shift. One was a controller-in-charge with 19 years of experience, and the other was a local controller with roughly 18 years of experience.

According to the report, the local controller gave the Air Canada flight the go-ahead to land on the runway about 20 seconds before the emergency vehicles left an airport fire station.

Truck 1 requested to cross the runway toward the United plane and was cleared by the local controller to do so.

The Air Canada flight was only 130ft in the air as the truck was given the clearance to cross.

About 20 seconds before the crash, the local controller began instructing the truck to stop, according to the report.

A crew member inside the firetruck told NTSB that he recalled hearing the controller pleading with them to ‘stop’ several times but did not realize the command was meant for them before entering the runway.

‘He further recalled that as they turned left, he saw the airplane’s lights on the runway,’ the report said.

Additionally, the runway’s red entrance lights may have been a factor in the incident as well.

According to the report, the lights are designed to turn on if a runway is not clear.

However, the lights were on as the Air Canada plane reached the runway and remained lit ‘until about the time Truck 1 reached the (near) edge of the runway, when they extinguished, about three seconds prior to the collision.’

The pilots killed in the crash were named as MacKenzie Gunther, 30, and Antoine Forest, 24, described by officials as young and competent pilots ‘at the start of their careers.’

A total of 40 others were hospitalized by the crash, including flight attendant Solange Tremblay, who miraculously survived being thrown 330 feet from the crash while still strapped in her seat.

China Announces Return of Beloved Giant Pandas to Atlanta Zoo in Exciting New Agreement

0

BEIJING (AP) — Giant pandas are set to return to Atlanta.

China announced on Friday that it will send a pair of giant pandas to Zoo Atlanta, marking a new chapter in their panda diplomacy efforts, even amidst ongoing tensions with Washington. This decision comes less than a month before U.S. President Donald Trump’s highly anticipated visit to Beijing.

The China Wildlife Conservation Association revealed that the pandas, a male named Ping Ping and a female named Fu Shuang, hail from the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding. They will be part of a ten-year conservation collaboration, as per an agreement signed with the zoo last year.

While the exact date of their departure remains unspecified, the U.S. side is reportedly making significant upgrades to their facilities to ensure a safe and comfortable home for the pandas. Chinese experts are offering technical advice to assist with these improvements, the association noted.

This development comes just weeks before President Trump’s scheduled visit to China in mid-May, where he is expected to engage in discussions on a variety of topics, including trade, with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Zoo Atlanta said in a statement Thursday that it was delighted and honored to be trusted as stewards of the pandas and to partner with the association.

“We can’t wait to meet Ping Ping and Fu Shuang and to welcome our members, guests, city, and community back to the wonder and joy of giant pandas,” the zoo’s president, Raymond B. King, said.

During an earlier giant panda agreement between the zoo and China that concluded in 2024, pandas Lun Lun and Yang Yang gave birth to seven bears, the zoo said. Lun Lun and Yang Yan and their two youngest offspring left Atlanta for China in October 2024, where the rest of their offspring reside, it said.

China’s giant panda loan program has long been known as a tool of Beijing’s soft-power diplomacy, but its conservation significance could have been an important reason Beijing is renewing its cooperation with U.S. zoos at a time of otherwise sour relations.

The association said Friday that the new round of cooperation will help China and the U.S. to yield more results in areas ranging from disease prevention and treatment to scientific exchanges.

Giant pandas have long been a symbol of the U.S.-China friendship, ever since Beijing gifted a pair of pandas to the National Zoo in Washington in 1972.

In 2024, the National Zoo in Washington and the San Diego Zoo also received pandas from China.

South Korean Yoon Faces Potential 30-Year Sentence for Pyongyang Drone Missions

0

On Friday, South Korean prosecutors called for a 30-year prison sentence for the former President Yoon Suk Yeol. The charges against him involve allegedly escalating tensions with North Korea in 2024 by ordering drone flights over Pyongyang, actions intended to justify the imposition of martial law domestically.

Yoon faces charges related to aiding an adversary and abusing his presidential powers. These charges are part of a broader array of indictments against the conservative ex-leader, stemming from his brief enforcement of martial law in South Korea in December 2024.

The prosecution’s request for Yoon’s imprisonment marks a significant development in the trial proceedings at Seoul Central District Court. Led by special prosecutor Cho Eun-suk, the investigative team accused Yoon and his senior defense officials of orchestrating drone incursions into North Korea, which occurred roughly two months before Yoon declared martial law. The prosecution argued that Yoon framed the country’s liberals as sympathizers with North Korea, depicting them as “anti-state” elements.

Yoon’s defense team, which has consistently refuted these charges, has yet to respond to the prosecution’s latest sentencing demand.

Previously, in February, the court handed Yoon a life sentence after finding him guilty on the more severe charge of rebellion. Both Yoon and the prosecution, which had pushed for a death penalty, have appealed this verdict.

Cho’s team in a statement Friday claimed that Yoon tried to create a warlike situation between the Koreas while plotting an authoritarian push to remove his political opponents and “monopolize and extend his power.”

Prosecutors are seeking a 25-year prison term for Yoon’s former defense minister, Kim Yong Hyun, a key confidant who helped plan and mobilize forces for the martial law declaration.

North Korea accused Seoul of flying drones over its capital, Pyongyang, to drop propaganda leaflets three times in October 2024. Kim initially made a vague denial, but Seoul’s Defense Ministry later switched to saying it couldn’t confirm whether or not the claims were true. Tensions with North Korea rose sharply at the time.

Yoon proceeded with his late night martial law declaration on Dec. 3, 2024, delivering a televised address in which he blasted liberals over a range of issues, but largely over their impeachments of his top officials and cuts to his government’s budget bill.

The decree lasted about six hours until a quorum of lawmakers broke through a blockade of heavily armed soldiers and police Yoon had deployed to the National Assembly. They then voted to overturn it, forcing his Cabinet to lift the measure.

Yoon was suspended from office on Dec. 14, 2024, after being impeached by the liberal-led legislature and was formally removed by the Constitutional Court in April 2025. He was arrested in July that year and has been undergoing various criminal trials since.

Though brief, Yoon’s martial law decree threw the country into a severe political crisis, paralyzing politics and high-level diplomacy and rattling financial markets. The turmoil eased only after his liberal rival Lee Jae Myung won an early presidential election in June last year.

Shortly after taking office, Lee approved legislation that launched independent investigations into Yoon’s martial law stunt and other criminal allegations involving him, his wife and associates.

Church Maintains Current Stance on Same-Sex Couple Blessings

0

Pope Leo XIV clarified on Thursday that the Catholic Church will adhere to the precedent set by Pope Francis regarding blessings for same-sex couples, stating there will be no formalized blessings in the future.

While acknowledging the decision made by Pope Francis in 2023, Pope Leo XIV, speaking during his return flight to Rome, underscored that the Church does not intend to expand upon this policy.

Pope Francis had previously allowed clergy to offer blessings to same-sex couples on an informal basis, outside of official ritual services, and evaluated individually, as reported by Reuters.

Pope Leo’s recent statements came in response to efforts by German Cardinal Reinhard Marx, who sought to formalize blessings for same-sex couples within his jurisdiction.

“The Vatican has been clear in its stance against the formal blessing of couples—specifically same-sex couples or those in irregular unions—beyond the provisions made by Pope Francis, who emphasized the importance of blessings for all individuals,” Pope Leo stated.

“When a priest gives the blessing at the end of Mass, when the Pope gives the blessing at the end of a great celebration like the one we had today, there are blessings for all people,” he continued. “Francis’s famous expression, ‘everyone, everyone, everyone,’ expresses the Church’s conviction that everyone is welcomed, everyone is invited, everyone is invited to follow Jesus, and everyone is invited to seek conversion in their own lives. To go beyond this today, I believe, could cause more disunity than unity, and that we should seek to build our unity on Jesus Christ and on what Jesus Christ teaches.”

The pope, however, did affirm that Catholic teaching encompasses a wide variety of intellectual and philosophical thoughts beyond sexual morality.

“We tend to think that when the Church is talking about morality, that the only issue of morality is sexual,” he said. “In reality, I believe there are much greater and more important issues such as justice, equality, (and) freedom of men and women.”

2026 TV Show Cancellations: A Comprehensive List So Far

0

Not every television show can become a hit. While the 2025-2026 TV season has produced some major successes like the “Yellowstone” spin-off “Marshals” and “The ‘Burbs,” it hasn’t been without its share of flops. This year has seen the cancellation of a diverse array of shows, from long-running talk shows that entertained for years to dramatic series that barely made it past a few episodes. Some of these shows have left viewers hanging with unresolved storylines and cliffhangers.

Which television programs are saying goodbye this fall? Which series were cut down before they had a chance to fully blossom? And which long-standing favorites are taking their final bow? Here is a comprehensive list of every TV program canceled in 2026 so far, from early casualties in the chilly winter months to the most recent victims of the competitive ratings battle.

The year’s first cancellation came on January 21, when Netflix pulled the plug on a drama with an impressive pedigree. “The Abandons,” a historical Western created by “Sons of Anarchy” mastermind Kurt Sutter, was the streaming giant’s unsuccessful bid to capture the Taylor Sheridan audience. Despite featuring a star-studded cast, including Lena Headey and Gillian Anderson, the show struggled to hold viewers’ attention, peaking at #4 on Netflix’s top 10 list before quickly declining. It was axed after just one season, with its fate further sealed by behind-the-scenes turmoil, including Sutter’s departure before the show’s 2024 wrap-up.

Set in 1845, the series followed two contrasting families trying to survive in Washington Territory. The Nolans, led by faith-driven Irish immigrant Tess (played by Headey), consisted of her adopted group of orphans. They found themselves at odds with the affluent Van Ness family, headed by Constance (played by Anderson), who controlled the local silver mine. As Constance attempted to seize the Nolan family’s farm, both families were forced to fight for their survival, revealing unexpected commonalities amid their struggles.

The Abandons

Meanwhile, “The Vince Staples Show,” known for its bold take on the pre-fame life of rapper Vince Staples, also faced the chopping block on January 21 alongside “The Abandons.” Despite its imaginative storytelling, the series couldn’t escape cancellation by Netflix.

The series takes place in 1845, and is centered around two totally different families making a living in Washington Territory. There are the poor Nolans, comprised of faith-driven Irish immigrant Tess (Headly) and her adopted clan of orphans. She stands in opposition to the rich Van Ness tribe, headed by Constance (Anderson), who runs the local silver mine. Constance tries to claim the Nolan family farm, and the Nolans must dig in their heels and work to stay alive on their terms. Both women struggle for a foothold in their respective worlds, and though they clash, they have much more in common than they initially believe.

The Vince Staples Show

“The Vince Staples Show” was fearless in its fictionalization of the pre-fame life of its titular rap star, and it wasn’t afraid to get imaginative with its storytelling. But all of the creativity in the world couldn’t keep the series from the chopping block; it was cancelled in tandem with “The Abandons” by Netflix on January 21.

The comedy was critically acclaimed; it bears a 94% critical approval score on Rotten Tomatoes. But it wasn’t a big enough hit for Netflix, never reaching the streamer’s top 10 English language program list. After a big drop in streams from its Season 1 debut, the series was axed.

The show focuses upon Staples as he deals with family drama, money shortages, and day-to-day activities. The majority of Season 2 deals with the death of his Uncle James (Beau Billingslea), and follows Staples from the funeral to the will reading and beyond.

Good Cop/Bad Cop

The phrase good cop-bad cop usually makes people think of spirited interrogation room scenes on dramas like “NYPD Blue.” But the comedy drama “Good Cop/Bad Cop” was a seriocomic procedural that seemed made for cult hit status. Unfortunately for the show’s newfound fans, it was cancelled on February 13 after airing its first season via the Australian streamer Stan. The series was imported to The CW, but didn’t make a splash there, either.

Co-star Luke Cook confirmed the show’s cancellation via his TikTok account. “I loved making that show. I loved making friends with everybody on that show, the cast and crew, and John [Quaintance], who wrote the show, they’re all my great friends. So I’m sad we won’t get to do it again,” he said in part.

The series followed the adventures of sibling detectives Lou (Leighton Meester) and Henry Hickman (Cook), who solve crimes inside and outside of their small hometown of Eden Vale, located in the Pacific Northwest. Lou is sometimes accompanied by Shane Carson (Devon Terrell), her partner on the force who quietly pines for her. Watching over them all is “Big” Hank Hickman (Clancy Brown), the Hickman siblings’ father, who’s not afraid of behaving crookedly to protect his family and position as chief of police.

Palm Royale

An Emmy darling with a star-studded cast, “Palm Royale” combined humor and drama in a period setting. But its punchy ways didn’t attract enough viewers, and after two seasons it was cancelled by Apple TV+ on March 2. The network declined to explain why the show will be ending.

The series centered around Maxine Simmons (Kristen Wiig), who does everything she can to become a part of the hoi polloi of Palm Beach, Florida. The more deeply Maxine becomes embedded in the local country club’s social set, the more desperate she is for money, approval, and attention. Things get harder for her when her rich, comatose aunt Norma Dellacorte (Carol Burnett) wakens from a long-term coma and makes a move to reclaim her spot at the top of the social scene. But Aunt Norma has plenty of secrets of her own, and Maxine finds herself on a collision course with danger and destiny.

Yes, Chef!

Almost everything lifestyle entrepreneur Martha Stewart touches turns into gold, but she’s been having a lot of trouble sticking the landing in the competitive reality show category. While she made a successful run on “Chopped,” she’s had plenty of failures tucked under her belt; remember “The Apprentice: Martha Stewart?” “Yes, Chef!” has joined that group of missteps. The summertime competition show was cancelled on March 12, averaging 1.5 million live and same-day viewers over its brief one season run.

The series saw Stewart and restaurateur José Andrés put 12 chefs — nominated by their friends and family — through the professional wringer. They have to charm Stewart and Andrés with their talent, teamwork, and personalities. The winner gets $250,000 from sponsor Purely Elizabeth. Sadly the series will never crown a new champion, and Stewart’s going to have to keep looking for the right game show to display her talents.

The Steve Wilkos Show

NBCUniversal decided to get out of the first-run syndication programming game on March 13, bringing an end to three of its long-lived shows. The first program on the docket, “The Steve Wilkos Show,” had recently finished taping Season 19 when it was cancelled.

A spin-off of the similarly long-lived “The Jerry Springer Show,” “The Steve Wilkos Show” carried Springer’s mantle well into the 2020s. Wilkos often platformed hot button issues on his series and spoke with controversial guests; an unsurprising fact, since he first gained fame as a security guard pulling apart brawling, swearing combatants on the mothership outlet.

The series even evolved out of a “Springer” segment called “Steve to the Rescue,” and softened in tone as the years went on, though not by a lot. In spite of Wilkos’ best efforts, things could get wild on his stage, and he sometimes found himself at the center of some furious physical battles.

“Access Hollywood” sprang up in the wake of the success of “Entertainment Tonight” and other entertainment news magazines in 1996. Including one-on-one celebrity interviews as well as news covering the pop culture world, the show has evolved away from being solely a TV digest and – with Kit Hoover and Mario Lopez at the helm — would go on to include commerce and shopping stories, along with reporting about lifestyle topics.

It was cancelled on March 13 along with the rest of NBCUniversal’s syndicated programs. There’s no word as to what will happen with “Access Daily with Mario & Kit” the show’s spin-off program, which includes cooking segments and other human interest stories.

The roster of hosts the program has fostered is truly remarkable; alumni include Billy Bush, Nancy O’Dell, Pat O’Brien, Tony Robbins, and “Survivor” host Jeff Probst. Tragically, the show will now be nothing but a memory.

Karamo

The final series to die in NBCUniversal’s syndicated programming bloodbath, “Karamo” launched in 2022, making it the newest of the shows to be cancelled. Spotlighting “Queer Eye” cultural expert Karamo Brown, the outing leaned in a surprisingly old-school direction with its subject choices.

One might expect classier topics from a man who made his name selling people on the importance of broadening their minds and tastes, but Brown’s show centered on “Jerry Springer”-like ideas such as partner infidelity, family squabbles, and sexual rapaciousness. Episode titles included “DNA: This Is Not My Child,” ” Mom, Why Can’t You Accept Me?,” and “I’m a Virgin Looking for a Husband; It’s Been 4 Years, Can You Forgive Me?”

It will be interesting to see where Brown goes from here after stepping into Maury Povich’s shoes and refereeing dozens of arguments before a live studio audience, but he’s at least proved he can appeal to all sorts of demographics.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy

“Star Trek: Starfleet Academy” got a lot of guff for being what boiled down to a teen soap opera dressed up in Federation togs. Nevertheless, the show had its defenders and developed a small following before ending after two seasons on March 23. Unfortunately, it was not a major hit in spite of the attention it garnered. No matter which way you slice it, “Starfleet Academy” flopped with most who tried it.

The show centers on life on the USS Athena, captained by Nahla Ake (Holly Hunter), a part-Lanthanite who is also the chancellor of the titular Starfleet Academy. Captain Ake is a hands-on teacher to her group of students, who range from Klingon Jay-Den Kraag (Karim Diané) to Caleb Mir (Sandro Rosta) a human rebel searching for his missing mother. Together, the teens grow and Ake tries to shepherd them through the lumps and bumps of life.

Talamasca: The Secret Order

The Immortal Universe has two hits on its hands in the form of “Interview with the Vampire/The Vampire Lestat” and “Mayfair Witches,” but it couldn’t keep up that momentum with “Talamasca: The Secret Order,” which was canned on March 27. But fans shouldn’t despair for too long. In a press release announcing the cancellation, an AMC spokesman declared that some of the characters from “Talamasca” will appear in other Immortal Universe series.

The show is about Guy Anatole (Nicholas Denton), a law student, psychic, and telepath. One day, an agent for the Talamasca — a secret organization that monitors the activities of supernatural entities and tries to keep a balance between the mortal and immortal worlds — approaches him with an offer to join their agency, having tracked him for years. Guy does just that, becoming something of a globetrotting secret agent. He is assigned to track Jasper (William Fichtner), a vampire stationed in London who has taken over the Talamasca’s Motherhouse in England. But Guy soon finds out that taking down Jasper will be much harder than he anticipated.

DMV

CBS has had a hard time trying to rework its legendary Monday night comedy lineup. “The Neighborhood” is on the cusp of ending, and ever since “Bob Hearts Abishola” concluded in 2024, they’ve been unable to find the right companion show for it. “DMV” is the latest casualty in that battle — the program was cancelled on March 27 along with “Watson” after one season. The last episode to air before it was axed was “Test Drive,” which pulled in only 2.8 million live and same-day viewers.

“DMV” unshockingly focuses on that titular place of business and the people who work there, more specifically an East Hollywood branch. An ensemble workplace comedy, its central characters include the overly-eager Colette (Harriet Dyer); sweet but dim bodybuilder Vic (Tony Cavalero); former English teacher Gregg (Tim Meadows); and Noa (Alex Tarrant), Colette’s recently-transferred crush from New Zealand, who has a girlfriend. The group deals with ups, downs, impossible drivers, and complicated situations, becoming a real found family in spite of their less-than-glamorous circumstances.

Watson

Perhaps CBS audiences are starting to come down with procedural fatigue, or perhaps they just weren’t excited about a show that tries to separate Dr. John Watson (Morris Chestnut) from Sherlock Holmes. Whatever the problem was, fans rejected “Watson,” and it was cancelled alongside “DMV” on March 27 after two seasons. Its viewership has remained middling; it pulled in 3.1 million live and same day viewers for the March outing “Wrongful Life,” the most recent episode to air before the cancellation.

Combining medical drama and dashes of mystery, the show’s 1st season tries to give Watson an individual life after the apparent death of Holmes and Professor James Moriarty (Randall Park) during a confrontation at Reichenbach Falls. John returns to his medical practice at the Holmes Clinic of Diagnostic Medicine in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. When Moriarty resurfaces later, Watson finds that his carefully rebuilt life is now in danger, along with those of all of his colleagues and loved ones.

The Runarounds

“The Runarounds” was one part “The Heights,” one part “The Archies.” But unlike Netflix’s treasure hunt laden crime drama “Outer Banks” — which was also created by Jonas and Josh Pate — teenagers didn’t find the antics of a touring band on the run charming. Prime Video dumped the show on April 3 after a single season. The program couldn’t seem to compete with the many shows aimed at adolescents scooped up by Prime Video for the 2025-2026 season, as the streamer looks for its latest hit in the wake of the ending of “The Summer I Turned Pretty.”

The Pate brothers formed the band themselves, and the quintet will continue touring in real life. “The Runarounds” is about the titular band, a small touring outfit comprised of Charlie Cooper (William Lipton), Neil Crosby (Axel Ellis), Wyatt Wysong (Jesse Golliher), Bez Willis (Zendé Murdock), Topher Park (Jeremy Yun), and the people who love them. The group slowly evolves a following across the course of Season 1, and each season would have had the group face new challenges as they become more famous.

The Copenhagen Test

It’s been a bad couple of seasons for the spy thriller genre. While a small number of shows, like “Mr. and Mrs. Smith,” have broken through, most of them have died ignominious deaths. To wit: the mediocre espionage tale “The Copenhagen Test” now lies at the bottom of that scrap heap of unloved mysteries; it was cancelled on April 15 after one season.

Simu Liu and Melissa Barrera star in a show centered on tech paranoia. Liu plays Alexander Hale, an intelligence analyst whose brain has been hacked by an unknown source. He must therefore lie to himself and everyone around him until he finds the source of the leak, and then dodge danger from every source imaginable.

One of those sources is Michelle (Barrera), an infuriatingly mysterious woman who may or may not mean Alexander harm. As the clock runs out and Alexander worries about his future, danger grows ever nearer — the ultimate question is, of course, who wants into his brain badly enough to brute force their way in?

Law & Order: Organized Crime

“Law & Order: Organized Crime” has become the latest “L&O” spin-off to hit the dirt. NBC did its level best to keep this show alive, but fans have lost interest in this Elliot Stabler (Christopher Meloni)-centered outing, perhaps due to its multiple hops between NBC and Peacock. The show was cancelled on April 16 in light of how strong NBC’s pilot season looks and its weak performance on Peacock. “Organized Crime” lasted for five seasons, four of them broadcast on NBC, and one on Peacock.

The series took a deep dive into Stabler’s backstory from “Law & Order: SVU” as he searches for vengeance in the wake of his wife’s murder. Case by case and piece by piece, he begins to figure out who did Kathy (Isabel Gillies) in. But even when the case is solved, Elliot sticks around and keeps bringing in mobster after mobster — to the detriment of his mental health and personal life.

Unraveling the Mexican Mafia’s Reign: How They Transformed American Neighborhoods into ‘Gangsta’s Paradise

0

On Thursday, federal authorities revealed a major crackdown on individuals suspected to be linked with the Mexican Mafia in Southern California. In a comprehensive case encompassing charges of murder, kidnapping, drug trafficking, and extortion, 43 individuals are facing accusations of transforming Orange County into a “Gangsta’s Paradise.”

Coordinated raids led to the arrests of numerous suspects, while others currently detained are likely to face federal charges in the coming weeks, according to the prosecution team.

Authorities allege that this case sheds light on how the infamous “La Eme” prison gang has managed to orchestrate street-level crimes from behind bars. Using smuggled cellphones and encrypted messaging apps, they allegedly directed violent acts and drug operations from within the prison system.

“Gang members involved in murder, extortion, kidnapping, and drug trafficking pose a significant threat to our communities and our way of life,” stated First Assistant U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli. He emphasized the ongoing efforts to dismantle organized crime, both inside correctional facilities and on the streets.

Officials also distributed images of many individuals facing charges in this extensive Mexican Mafia investigation.

“Today’s arrests highlight the continuing cooperation between federal and local law enforcement against violent felons and our unyielding determination to crack down on organized crime in our prisons and our streets.”

At the center of the case is alleged gang leader Luis “Pops” Cardenas, who prosecutors say oversaw operations in Orange County from prison, issuing orders to trusted associates, including Jaime “Junior” Alvarado, Karina Cesena and Mario “Happy” Flores.

Those associates are accused of carrying out kidnappings, assaults and drug trafficking and overseeing stash locations, gang-controlled motels and illegal gambling operations tied to the enterprise.

Authorities say violence played a key role in maintaining control.

In one case outlined by prosecutors, two men allegedly killed a victim at an Anaheim motel in 2025 in an effort to gain status within the gang. Both defendants could face life in prison or the death penalty if convicted.

The indictment also alleges gang members kidnapped and assaulted individuals who fell out of favor, including a 2025 attack tied to a gambling operation in Stanton.

FBI Director Kash Patel described the organization as a “ruthless criminal enterprise” that operated across prison walls and neighborhood streets.

“These defendants allegedly ran a criminal network that murdered, kidnapped, extorted and flooded our communities with deadly drugs,” Patel said. “The FBI will never stop working alongside our law enforcement partners to hold these individuals accountable and protect the people of California.”

During the investigation, authorities seized large quantities of narcotics and weapons, including nearly nine pounds of fentanyl, roughly 120 pounds of methamphetamine, as well as heroin, cocaine and 25 guns.

Officials say the drugs were distributed through a network of dealers and so-called “slap houses,” illegal gambling sites that also functioned as hubs for narcotics sales.

Federal agents also tracked the group’s finances, targeting the flow of money tied to suspected drug trafficking and extortion schemes.

“By tracing and dismantling these financial pipelines, we cut directly into the organization’s ability to operate,” said IRS Criminal Investigation official Darren Lian.

Local law enforcement leaders said the arrests should send a clear message.

Anaheim Police Chief Manny Cid said the alleged activity had a direct impact on neighborhoods, while Santa Ana Police Chief Robert Rodriguez said authorities will continue to target those who threaten public safety.

Dozens of defendants are expected to appear in federal court in Los Angeles and Santa Ana, with many facing decades in prison or life sentences if convicted.

Jack Nicholson’s Daughter Shares Rare Birthday Tribute: Celebrating the Icon’s 89th Year

0

Lorraine Nicholson delighted fans with a rare snapshot of her elusive father, Jack Nicholson, in celebration of his 89th birthday on Thursday.

The 36-year-old actress shared an Instagram photo featuring the iconic actor enjoying a special day surrounded by family and his dear friend, 82-year-old Joni Mitchell, on Wednesday, April 22.

The image captured Nicholson’s legendary grin as he joined Mitchell and others in the room, clapping joyously.

Lorraine captioned the heartfelt snap, ’89!!’

Additionally, Lorraine shared a nostalgic picture from the 1970s, showing her father sporting a red Coca-Cola T-shirt and puffing on a cigar.

Jack Nicholson is the proud father of Lorraine, an actress herself, and 34-year-old son Ray, both from his previous marriage to model Rebecca Broussard, 63.

He also has daughter Jennifer, 62, with ex-wife Sandra Knight, son Caleb James Goddard, 55, with his late Five Easy Pieces co-star Susan Anspach and daughter Honey Hollman with Danish model Winnie Hollman.

Nicholson is estranged from his alleged youngest child, 32-year-old daughter Tessa Gourin, whose mom is actress Jennine Gourin.

Lorraine is the only one of Nicholson’s children who has given fans a look at the actor’s private life on social media since he left the Hollywood spotlight over a decade ago.

He has seemingly retired from acting, with his last film role being the 2010 rom-com How Do You Know.

Lorraine posted the first photo of her father in nearly a year back in December 2025, which showed him posing with her and son Ray inside what appeared to be a restaurant.

A source told the Daily Mail at the time that Nicholson ‘is doing well, he is happy to be out of the Hollywood spotlight and just enjoys time with his family.’

The insider added, ‘He loves being around his children and is very close to them.’

Before Lorraine’s post, Nicholson was last seen at the SNL 50 party in February last year, where he made a rare appearance in the audience.

Before that, Nicholson was spied in 2024 using a cane on an outing in Beverly Hills, three years after he was last seen at an LA Lakers game in October 2021.

Nicholson’s close pal Danny DeVito, 81, provided a rare update on the star last July, reassuring fans that he is doing ‘great’ despite his reclusive lifestyle.

DeVito gave the update while speaking to PEOPLE in honor of the 50th anniversary of the iconic movie One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, which famously starred both DeVito and Nicholson.

‘I just saw Jack a couple of weeks ago – it was his birthday a month ago, and he’s great,’ he told the outlet at the time.

DeVito maintained a close bond with Nicholson after One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest as they appeared in a number of movies together and recalled how he was impressed with the star’s grounded attitude when they first met even though his star in Hollywood was rising at the time.

‘There was no need for an icebreaker. He was immediately just so embracing… He started out exactly the way everybody else did, where he couldn’t get a job. It was like he came to Hollywood and he was just going to write and direct, and then Easy Rider comes along after the (Roger) Corman stuff… So he was in our milieu, and he was always just as open and genuine, and we all felt it immediately,’ DeVito said of Nicholson.

The It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia star added: ‘Of course, he was doing it because he’s that way, and he was also doing it because that had to be, because we had to be all joined at the hip in that movie, and we had such great performances.’

Four years ago, former Fox News host Bill O’Reilly said during an episode of his No Spin News broadcast that reports that Nicholson’s mental health had diminished were ‘bull.’

‘I visited Jack Nicholson a few months ago. I had a long conversation with him and he follows the No Spin News very closely and had all kinds of intelligent questions for me,’ O’Reilly said.

‘I have been friends with him for decades. He is 85, okay? But he is more intellectually nimble than the president of the United States,’ he continued.

Nicholson has been criticized for never acknowledging his paternity of his alleged daughter Tessa, who was born out of his brief affair with waitress Jeanine Gourin.

In February 2025, Tessa, an aspiring actress, published an essay in Newsweek titled ‘I’m Jack Nicholson’s Daughter – I Wish People Could Call Me a Nepo Baby.’

‘Having grown up without my father, I’ve sat on the sidelines and watched in frustration as other celebrity children have seamlessly secured roles or been signed to huge agencies,’ she wrote.

‘More recently, I have grown even more frustrated at what I think is a missed opportunity for these so-called ‘nepo babies’ to own their position and embrace it instead of complaining about it,’ Tessa continued.

While in a separate interview with the Daily Beast, Tessa said that she was told from a young age not to tell people who her father was. She said that the actor is ‘a complicated person’ and that her birth was ‘collateral damage.’

Nicholson had a somewhat controversial upbringing from the start – after his mother, an unmarried showgirl named June Frances Nicholson, gave birth to the actor at age 18, her parents decided to raise him as their own child, pretending that June was his sister.

For nearly four decades, Jack believed that his mom was his sibling, until 1974, when Time magazine uncovered the truth and told him about its findings.

While speaking to Patrick McGilligan for his biography, entitled Jack’s Life, the Shining star called it ‘the most f***ed thing he had ever heard.’

He also said the discovery was ‘dramatic’, but added that it ‘wasn’t’ something he’d ‘call traumatizing.’

The actor later told Rolling Stone, when asked about the shock revelation: ‘I was very impressed by their ability to keep the secret, if nothing else. It’s done great things for me.’

June moved away from Jack – who grew up in Neptune City, New Jersey – when he was four to pursue her career as a showgirl.

But when he was 17, he decided to move out to California to be with her, where he landed a secretary job for animation directors William Hanna and Joseph Barbera at the MGM cartoon studio.

At the same time, he was also studying to be an actor, and he eventually landed his debut role in the 1958 teen drama The Cry Baby Killer.

After that, his career soon took off and Nicholson went on become one of the most well-known actors of all time, landing more than 70 roles in a slew of big movies and TV shows over his 50-year career.

Some of his best-known acting credits include As Good as It Gets, Terms of Endearment, Five Easy Pieces, A Few Good Men, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, and The Shining.
