Augusta’s Allen Homes Community Garden Launches with Earth Day 2026 Festivities: A Green Haven for Local Residents

AUGUSTA, Ga. — Community members and local leaders came together on April 22 to celebrate Earth Day in Augusta with a special event marking the opening of a new community garden in the Allen Homes Neighborhood.

To commemorate the day, a ribbon-cutting ceremony was held for the garden, which boasts raised beds, a well-planned irrigation system, inviting gathering areas, and vibrant public art installations.

Lashawndra Robinson, the executive director of Black Farm Street Inc., highlighted the collaborative effort involved in creating the garden. “Today, we’re here because of an initiative that was developed with community input,” Robinson said. “Our vision was to create a space where residents can engage with the earth by planting their own food and enjoying the benefits of gardening.”

Robinson further emphasized the garden’s broader impact on the neighborhood, stating, “Creating a garden is a powerful way to uplift a community. Beyond the garden itself, revitalizing outdoor social spaces, such as basketball courts for all ages and other communal areas, allows neighbors to come together and enjoy time outdoors.”

She added, “What better way to impact a community than with a garden space? But in addition to the garden space, just revitalizing some of the outdoor social spaces, whether that’s basketball for the young and the older. Then also, other spaces so that neighbors can come outside and enjoy that time together.”

The garden itself includes vegetables, herbs, and pollinator-friendly flowers.

“The number one crop requested was tomatoes. So we’ll have at least two to three bags with all these tomatoes. But as far as the vegetables, we’re planning a variety of vegetables. We’re also planning herbs. So in case you were cooking, you can go outside your back door or right here and walk through the garden in your own community and pick it and use it. You don’t need permission to do that. It doesn’t get buried in it.”

Artists who worked to provide artwork for the surrounding space shared their thoughts about seeing the garden come to life.

“One of my dreams is to create a big garden,” said Destinee Love, a muralist in attendance. “So I have a garden and a farm and so share it with the community and, you know, live off the land. So, how I created it was I actually, use myself the actual picture of me, and I was like, you know, I’m gonna make myself have a big fro and have my hair be the garden.”

“I liked having lots of, glimpses and slices of life of the different people,” said Emily Bender, a muralist. “And just like lots of diversity in terms of age and what they look like and what they’re doing. To showcase this sort of community that they’re building.”

“I feel very grateful for this opportunity,” Love added. “And I’m excited for this community to come together. And, you know, for the generations to have that type of, experience of farming and, planting. You know, I love it. I just love it.”

Robinson said the garden is the result of community collaboration and teamwork.

“If we all play our part, if we’re all doing what we’re called to do, if we’re all planting our seeds, watering them, nurturing it, and whatever capacity it will grow in, the earth continues to thrive off of what we put into it, so that we’re not just takers of the earth, but we’re also givers.”

The project was led by Black Farm Street Inc. in partnership with Augusta Locally Grown, the City of Augusta Housing & Community Development Department, the Augusta Housing Authority, and the Greater Augusta Arts Council.

Mark Vientos’ Heroics End Mets’ Losing Streak: From Struggles to Stardom

0

In a dramatic twist of fate, Mark Vientos transformed from the evening’s scapegoat to its savior, as the Mets clinched a 3-2 victory over the Twins on Wednesday, snapping their 12-game losing skid.

Initially, Vientos found himself in hot water after a glaring baserunning blunder. Ignoring third base coach Tim Leiper’s clear signal to halt, he charged ahead on Marcus Semien’s sixth-inning double, which landed in the gap during a deadlocked game.

This misstep led to his being tagged out by a wide margin, prematurely closing the inning.

However, redemption came in the eighth inning when Vientos struck a pivotal, game-winning single, a soft hit to right field that brought Brett Baty home.

“I’m thrilled he got that hit,” Carlos Mendoza remarked, grinning as he reflected on the turn of events.

Vientos made no apologies for his gaffe on the bases.

“My instinct was once the ball was off the wall, I was gonna score,’’ Vientos said.

Vientos, part of a lineup that has floundered for much of the season, said he saw Leiper put up the stop sign but ignored it.

“We want to make the right play, but I’m always gonna be aggressive,’’ Vientos said. “I’m not gonna play passive on the field. I’d rather make a mistake aggressively than [passively].’’

After flopping as the closer for the Yankees a year ago, Devin Williams looks to be doing the same thing on the other side of town this season.

But even after a three-appearance stretch in which he allowed seven runs, four walks and six hits in just 1 ¹/₃ innings while blowing a save and taking the loss in another, Mendoza said Wednesday he is not considering pulling Williams from the role.

“I know he’s going through it right now, but as I’m sitting here, we haven’t had that discussion,’’ Mendoza said prior to the Mets win.

Williams, who had pitched twice in three days, was unavailable Wednesday, so Luke Weaver got the final four outs.

Asked why he remains confident that Williams — who was pulled from the ninth-inning job in late April with the Yankees and then again in August — can overcome his current struggles, Mendoza said, “He’s done it before.”

Still, after Williams was yanked as closer in the second half of last season and had some success in a setup role, he didn’t get it back.

But Mendoza hasn’t given up on Williams, who signed a three-year, $51 million deal in the offseason even after his rough showing in The Bronx.

“It’s the nature of the business,’’ Mendoza said of Williams’ recent poor results. “You’re gonna go through stretches when it’s hard and you find a way to get back on track. There’s gonna be adversity, [there’s] gonna be stretches you’re not at your best and he’s done that before a few times. That’s what gives me confidence he’ll get there again.”

A.J. Minter continued his rehab assignment Wednesday with his first appearance with Triple-A Syracuse, as the lefty comes back from lat surgery that cost him most of 2025.

He allowed three hits and a run in his one inning and didn’t strike out or walk any batters.

Mendoza said Tuesday that the 32-year-old would likely need two more weeks of rehab games to get accustomed to pitching on back-to-back days again.

Austin Warren was still stunned Wednesday about the odd reaction he got from the small number of fans that remained at Citi Field in the ninth inning of Tuesday night’s loss, when the right-hander replaced Williams with the bases loaded and left them stranded by striking out the next three batters.

The crowd repeatedly chanted “MVP” as Warren piled up the strikeouts and kept it a two-run game.

“I was absolutely [surprised],’’ Warren said. “I’m sure everyone heard all the boos and I’m glad I could go in there and flip the switch a little bit and keep them on our side.”

The cheers began as soon as the threw a strike to Royce Lewis.

“I was like, ‘What’s going on?’’ Warren said. “I’m glad it went well and I could strand runners for Devin.”

The 30-year-old right-hander is in his second year with the Mets after being claimed off waivers from the Giants prior to last season.

“I feel I proved some people wrong with that kind of game,’’ Warren said. “I’ve always been an up-and-down [to the minors] guy since my debut. It sucks losing, but it feels good to do that.”

Gainesville Resident Charged After Allegedly Threatening Tree Service Worker with Gun

0

Reported by Staff

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – A 49-year-old man named Jeremy Carlos Farrell was taken into custody yesterday, facing charges for allegedly aiming a firearm at a tree service worker back in 2024.

The incident unfolded around 3:51 p.m. on August 6, 2024, when an officer from the Gainesville Police Department arrived at a residence in the Springtree neighborhood. The worker claimed he was on-site with a tree service contracted by Farrell. However, the contract was reportedly canceled by Farrell due to the company’s late arrival.

According to the victim, Farrell brandished a gun and threatened, “I’m not playing with you!”, instilling fear for his safety. In response, the victim and his girlfriend sought refuge in a neighboring garage while two of Farrell’s relatives attempted to calm him. One family member reportedly confiscated the weapon and retreated indoors.

The officer on the scene identified the firearm as a Taurus Judge, noting its classification as a shotgun due to its capability to discharge shotgun shells.

A witness reportedly said she saw the victim get out of a vehicle and then saw Farrell walking down the street, holding a gun; she said Farrell pointed the gun at the victim and said, “Do you think I’m playing?” She said all of the employees ran into a nearby garage for safety.

A second witness reportedly said Farrell chased the victim to their vehicle with a gun in his hand, pointing it at the tree service employees. He said Farrell said, “You think I’m playing with you?” but did not know why Farrell said that.

A third witness, one of the family members, reportedly said Farrell had a gun in his hand, and she was trying to push him away from the victim and the other tree service employees. She said she took the gun from his hand.

Post Miranda, Farrell reportedly said he had gotten into an argument with the victim and the other tree service employees, and he went back to his house, grabbed his gun, put it in his pocket, and walked back toward the victim and the other employees. He said his family members tried to stop him several times, but he did not listen. He said he never pointed the gun at the employees, and after the argument was over, he took the gun back to his house. Farrell reportedly said he’d had two drinks of vodka before arguing with the victim.

Farrell has been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. A warrant for his arrest was signed by Judge Denise Ferrero on April 8, 2026, and he was arrested yesterday and released on $5,000 bail. He has three convictions for traffic offenses but no other criminal history.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Comer Sets the Record Straight: Unraveling the GOP’s Stance on Maxwell Pardon Rumors

0

Republican Representative James Comer of Kentucky’s 1st District has issued a stern warning to mainstream media outlets.

His directive is clear: if his statements are to be quoted, they must be presented in their entirety, or not at all.

This message comes in response to an article by Politico, which covered internal debates within the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee regarding the possibility of granting a pardon to Ghislaine Maxwell. Maxwell, known for her association with Jeffrey Epstein, a convicted sex offender, has been suggested as a potential source of testimony in exchange for leniency.

The article also included a statement from Robert Garcia, the ranking Democrat from California’s 42nd District, who asserted that all committee Democrats were firmly against any pardon for Maxwell.

Comer’s remarks were featured in the piece, highlighting the ongoing tensions and divisions within the committee on this controversial issue.

Maxwell, who was deposed by the Oversight Committee as the sole convicted accomplice in the Epstein sex trafficking scheme, previously invoked her Fifth Amendment right in declining to answer the panel’s questions.

The story quoted the ranking Democrat, Robert Garcia (CA-42), as indicating that “committee Democrats unanimously opposed a pardon for Maxwell.”

Comer was quoted as saying this:

When asked whether he believed it was a favorable deal to issue a pardon in return for Maxwell’s testimony, Comer said, “A lot of people do.”

“My committee’s split on that,” he added, declining to name who on the panel supported granting a pardon. “I don’t speak for my committee.”

Comer himself wasn’t in favor.

“I think it looks bad,” he said. “Honestly, other than Epstein, the worst person in this whole investigation is Maxwell.”

If Democrats on the committee are allegedly united against one, that means some of the Republicans on it are in favor, if you read between the lines of Comer’s remarks.

But on X, the way the news outlet initially framed the alleged divisions implied Comer was among those who agreed with pardoning Maxwell:

Comer was not happy that his full statement had initially been left out, and responded accordingly:

In fairness, the reporter had included the relevant part of the quote in a subsequent tweet, but she posted it nearly an hour after her initial tweet, and just four minutes before Comer’s :

The Oversight Committee, of course, can’t pardon Maxwell. It’s a power reserved solely for the president. In an early April interview with Politico, Maxwell’s attorney, David Oscar Markus, said he believed “There’s a good chance and for good reason that she would get a pardon,” though he claimed he had not yet talked to anyone in the Trump administration because “I don’t think now is the best time to do it, with everything going on.”

Golf Cart Tragedy: Man Sentenced After Wife’s Fatal Fall

Background: The neighborhood where Christina Theodosiou died after falling from a golf cart allegedly being driven by her husband, Angelo Theodosiou (YouTube/WJAX). Insets, left to right: Angelo Theodosiou (St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office), Christina Theodosiou (Dignity Memorial).

A Florida resident, aged 64, has managed to avoid incarceration following a tragic incident where his 58-year-old wife fell from a golf cart he was driving while intoxicated, resulting in her death. This outcome comes after the man reached an agreement with prosecutors.

On Tuesday, St. Johns County Circuit Judge Casey L. Woolsey sentenced Angelo Theodosiou to 364 days of probation and revoked his driving privileges for six months. This decision was in connection to the crash that led to the death of Christina Theodosiou last year, as documented in court records.

The sentence was issued after Angelo Theodosiou entered a no-contest plea to a charge of driving under the influence. In return for his plea, prosecutors agreed to dismiss a secondary charge related to his refusal to undergo DUI testing.

According to a report by Law&Crime, the tragic accident occurred around 10:45 p.m. on November 30, 2025.

The arrest report describes the situation, stating, “The defendant was operating a golf cart when the passenger, his wife, fell out. She sustained a head injury upon hitting the ground and was airlifted to Jacksonville Memorial Trauma Hospital, where she was assessed with a Glasgow score of 3 at the time of her trauma flight. The investigation determined the defendant was responsible for the incident.”

Investigators noted in the report that Theodosiou’s “eyes were bloodshot and watery and pupils displayed a reddened sclera.”

“An odor of alcoholic beverage emitted from the defendant from approximately three feet away in an open area,” the report said.

Despite being told that a DUI investigation was underway, authorities said Theodosiou refused to participate in a standardized field sobriety test.

“Once placed under arrest, the defendant repeatedly asked what was happening and why he was arrested,” the arrest report said.

Police also said Angelo Theodosiou’s test refusal came after he agreed to comply with the procedure.

“While at SJC Jail, the defendant was read and had implied consent explained to him repeatedly,” the report says. “The defendant originally advised he would provide a valid breath sample but recanted his statement and failed to provide.”

In the days after the crash, Angelo Theodosiou’s attorney, L. Lee Lockett, told The St. John Citizen that his client was “heartbroken” and “distraught” over the death of his wife, but maintained that he was “not impaired” at the time.

“He’s depressed as can be,” the lawyer said.

In December 2025, Law&Crime reported that the couple’s family members were “standing behind” Angelo Theodosiou in the wake of his wife’s death.

Neighbors told local CBS affiliate WJAX that given the high number of golf carts in the area, tragedy was bound to strike.

“We kind of imagine it was only a matter of time before someone was in an accident at this intersection,” said Christopher Barnes, who also told reporters he witnessed the aftermath of the crash.

“You shouldn’t be drinking and driving,” neighbor Yariela Farkas said. “It’s still a vehicle, and it’s still dangerous.”

Decades-Old Cold Case Cracked: Killer Confesses After Breakthrough Forensic Evidence

A man was handed a prison sentence following his admission of guilt in the decades-old unsolved murder of his girlfriend in Oregon.

Mark Sanfratello, now 73, received a 20-year prison term on Tuesday for the 1983 killing of Teresa Peroni, as confirmed by the Oregon Department of Justice. He admitted to first-degree manslaughter.

“For Teresa Peroni’s family, this has been an agonizing 43-year wait for answers they should never have been denied,” stated Oregon Attorney General Dan Rayfield in an official release.

Mark Sanfratello and Teresa Peroni

This case underscores the importance of perseverance. Regardless of how much time has elapsed, we remain committed to seeking justice for those whose lives were taken unjustly,” he added.

“Cases like this remind us of why we don’t give up. It doesn’t matter how many years have passed. If someone took a life, we’re going to keep working until we can hold them accountable.”

Peroni, who was 27 years old, was last seen walking into the woods with Sanfratello, her boyfriend at the time, after the pair attended a house party together in Selma.

She was reported missing shortly after, and authorities concluded her disappearance was suspicious.

However, investigators were unable to secure sufficient evidence to bring charges against anyone at the time.

In 1997, Peroni’s skull was found on a nearby private property, but no additional remains were discovered.

Authorities decided to reopen the case in 2024, and investigators “reinterviewed witnesses, collected new DNA evidence and applied modern forensic techniques to build a case against Sanfratello,” prosecutors said.

One year later, in July 2025, Sanfratello was taken into custody in Chico, California, and indicted on first-degree manslaughter charges after being extradited to Oregon, later pleading guilty in Josephine County Circuit Court.

Under the terms of his plea agreement with prosecutors, Sanfratello will serve a minimum of 10 years in prison.

The Oregon Department of Justice and Sanfratello’s attorney did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.

Hezbollah Strikes as Ceasefire Talks Loom: Is the Israel Truce on the Brink?

0

In Brief

  • A 10-day ceasefire came into effect last week.
  • Benjamin Netanyahu says Israel’s aim of disarming Hezbollah will require “wise navigation of the diplomatic field”.

On Tuesday, the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah announced the launch of rockets and drones targeting northern Israel, accusing the Israeli military of breaching a ceasefire ahead of upcoming discussions facilitated by the United States between Israeli and Lebanese officials.

Earlier, the Israeli Defense Forces reported that Hezbollah, which is allied with Iran, had fired several rockets at Israeli soldiers stationed in southern Lebanon. They labeled this action a “blatant violation” of the ceasefire terms.

It remains uncertain whether these reports refer to the same incident.

The United States brokered a 10-day ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah, which began last Thursday. However, Israeli military forces continue to occupy a swath of Lebanese territory, ranging from five to ten kilometers along the entire border.

Israel has stated that the purpose of this occupation is to establish a “buffer zone,” intended to protect its northern region from potential Hezbollah assaults. The Shia Muslim group poses a significant security concern for Israel.

Hezbollah, in its statement on Tuesday, accused Israel of attacking civilians and destroying homes in breach of the truce.

It said it fired at a position in northern Israel that had been striking southern Lebanon.

The Israeli military said it struck the launcher from which the rockets were fired, and that sirens in northern Israel were likely sounded after the interception of a drone launched from Lebanon.

The Israeli military did not respond to a question on whether Hezbollah’s announced attack was the same as the one the Israeli military had announced earlier.

Hezbollah ally says people will resist

On Thursday, the US will host a second round of ambassador-level talks between Israel and Lebanon, which was dragged into war on 2 March when Hezbollah opened fire in support of Iran in the regional conflict.

Parliament speaker Nabih Berri, Lebanon’s most senior Shia statesperson and a Hezbollah ally, earlier told Lebanese newspaper al-Joumhouria that Israeli forces occupying parts of the south would face resistance.

If Israel “maintains its occupation, whether of areas, positions, or by drawing yellow lines, it will smell the scent of resistance every day,” said Berri, leader of the Shia Amal Movement.

The Israeli military and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu both referred to Israel’s deployment line in Lebanon as the “Yellow Line” last week — the same term used by Israel for its deployment line in Gaza.

Israeli officials have since refrained from describing it in those terms, instead calling it a “forward defence line” that was marked in red in a military map published on Sunday that included a “naval forward defence area” extending from Lebanon’s coast into the sea.

The Israeli military has been carrying out demolitions in southern villages since the ceasefire, saying it is acting against Hezbollah infrastructure allegedly embedded in civilian areas.

Lebanese state media on Tuesday reported new Israeli detonations in at least eight villages and Israeli artillery shelling in several areas.

Israel withdrew from southern Lebanon in 2000 after a 22-year occupation, during which Hezbollah, Amal and other groups waged retaliatory attacks against Israeli forces.

Israeli strikes on Lebanon have killed nearly 2,300 people since 2 March, Lebanese authorities say.

The Lebanon conflict has complicated Pakistan’s efforts to mediate between the US and Iran.

Iran has demanded that Israel’s campaign against Hezbollah be included in any deal on the wider war.

US President Donald Trump announced the Lebanon ceasefire on 16 April, saying there was no link to its talks with Iran.

But Iran said it was part of an understanding reached with the US and mediated by Pakistan.

The US hosted talks between the Israeli and Lebanese ambassadors to the US on 14 April, the highest-level contacts between the states in decades, despite strong objections from Hezbollah.

No need for direct talks with Israel, says parliamentary speaker

Berri, in his comments to al-Joumhouria, reiterated his view that there was no need for direct talks with Israel, noting he had been a party to several rounds of indirect negotiations with Israel over the years.

Lebanon President Joseph Aoun has listed Israeli withdrawal among the country’s goals in face-to-face talks with Israel.

His administration has sought Hezbollah’s peaceful disarmament for a year.

Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam said on Tuesday his government did not seek confrontation with Hezbollah but would not be intimidated by it.

Israeli defence minister Israel Katz said on Tuesday the ultimate goal of the campaign against Hezbollah was to see the group disarmed, by both military and diplomatic means.

“If the Lebanese government continues not to keep its commitment [to disarm Hezbollah], the IDF will do so by continuing its military activity,” Katz said in Tel Aviv.

Netanyahu struck a softer tone last Friday, saying that disarming Hezbollah “will not be achieved tomorrow. It requires sustained effort, patience, and endurance, and it requires wise navigation of the diplomatic field”.
