US-Iran Negotiations Rekindle Hope Amid Lingering Challenges

0

in brief

  • Iran has shown its willingness to join peace talks with the US should the latter withdraw a nearby naval blockade.
  • A tenuous ceasefire between the two countries is set to expire on Thursday morning.

The United States remains optimistic that negotiations with Iran will proceed in Pakistan. Meanwhile, a high-ranking Iranian official indicated that Iran is contemplating participation, although significant obstacles persist as the ceasefire deadline looms.

President Donald Trump is pushing for a pact that curtails further spikes in oil prices and market instability. However, he maintains a firm stance that Iran must not acquire capabilities to produce nuclear weapons.

During an appearance on Fox News on Tuesday, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt conveyed that the US is “on the brink” of reaching an agreement with Iran.

Iran seeks to capitalize on its strategic position controlling the Strait of Hormuz to secure a deal that will prevent conflict renewal and alleviate sanctions while allowing its nuclear ambitions to continue unimpeded.

Initially dismissive of participation, Iran now appears to be reconsidering its stance. An official mentioned that the country is “positively reviewing” joining the discussions, marking a shift from previous declarations that rejected involvement and promised retaliation against US actions.

However, the official stressed that no decision had been made, and Iranian foreign minister Abbas Araghchi said that “continued violations of the ceasefire” by the US are a major obstacle to continuing the diplomatic process.

A Pakistani source involved in the discussions said there was momentum for talks to recommence on Wednesday and Trump could attend in person, or virtually, if a deal were to be signed.

“Things are moving forward and the talks are on track for tomorrow,” the source said on Tuesday on the condition of anonymity.

Araghchi told his Pakistani counterpart, Ishaq Dar, in a telephone call that Iran, while taking all aspects of the matter into account, had yet to decide how to proceed further.

The two-week ceasefire in a conflict that has killed thousands and roiled the global economy, particularly energy markets, is set to expire this week.

Oil prices down amid optimism over talks

Oil prices fell and stocks bounced back in early trading in Asia on Tuesday on expectations that talks would resume this week, after earlier meetings in Islamabad broke down without an agreement.

Oil prices had dipped in Monday trading on doubts over the talks.

But tensions remained high, with Iran’s foreign ministry condemning the US on Tuesday for what it called an attack on the Iranian commercial vessel Touska over the weekend, demanding the immediate release of the vessel, its crew and their families.

Trump said on social media that he believed his administration’s nuclear deal with Iran would be better than a 2015 international agreement reached after years of negotiations under then-president Barack Obama.

Trump withdrew from that agreement, which had been vehemently opposed by congressional Republicans and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in 2018, during his first term as president.

It was unclear what kind of agreement could be reached in just a few days of talks, but Trump predicted a quick result.

“I am under no pressure whatsoever, although, it will all happen, relatively quickly!” Trump said in a Truth Social post.

Pakistan has been gearing up to host the talks despite uncertainty over whether they would go ahead.

Nearly 20,000 security personnel have been deployed across Islamabad, a government official and a security official said.

Ongoing blockade

The ceasefire had appeared in jeopardy after the US said it had seized an Iranian cargo ship that tried to run its blockade, and Iran vowed to retaliate.

A Pakistani security source said Pakistani mediator Field Marshal Asim Munir had told Trump the blockade was an obstacle to talks, and that Trump had promised to consider ending it.

The US was hoping to start negotiations in Pakistan shortly before the ceasefire expires.

However, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said that “unconstructive and contradictory signals from American officials carry a bitter message; they seek Iran’s surrender.”

“Iranians do not submit to force,” he added on X.

Ceasefire set to expire

Trump announced the two-week ceasefire with Iran on 7 April and has not specified when precisely it ends.

A Pakistani source involved in the talks said it would expire at 10am AEST on Thursday, which would be 3.30am Thursday in Iran.

The US has maintained its blockade of Iranian ports, while Iran lifted and then reimposed its own blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, which typically handles roughly one-fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas supply.

Oil prices rose around 5 per cent as traders remained fearful that the ceasefire would collapse. Traffic through the Strait of Hormuz was at a virtual standstill with just three crossings in the space of 12 hours, according to shipping data.

Gainesville Resident Arrested for Attempting Cat Rescue from Restricted Evacuation Zone

0

By Staff Writer

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – In a dramatic turn of events, 52-year-old Jeffrey David Emminger found himself under arrest after allegedly speeding away at over 80 mph. This occurred following a police officer’s warning that he would face arrest if he attempted to bypass law enforcement to reach his home for his cat.

The incident unfolded around 6:19 p.m. on April 19, when Emminger reportedly tried to access a road blocked due to the State Road 121 fire. According to reports, Emminger informed an officer of his intention to navigate around the blockade to retrieve his pet cat from home. Despite receiving a final warning from the officer that such an action would lead to arrest, Emminger allegedly declared that the officer would have to apprehend him after he saved his cat.

Witnesses reported that Emminger accelerated past several officers and their marked patrol vehicles. Although one officer attempted to initiate a traffic stop, Emminger allegedly continued to speed past additional marked patrol units, reaching speeds over 80 mph. He reportedly maneuvered around fire trucks and even drove over water hoses actively being used by firefighters.

Emminger’s journey concluded at his residence, where law enforcement took him into custody without further incident.

Post Miranda, Emminger reportedly said he ignored instructions from law enforcement because he wanted to rescue his cat; he admitted that what he did was unsafe.

Emminger has been charged with fleeing from law enforcement with lights and sirens active (a felony), resisting an officer without violence, and failing to obey a police or fire department official. He has no criminal history, and Judge Joy Danne ordered him released on his own recognizance.

At today’s press conference, Gainesville Fire Rescue Chief Shawn Hillhouse said, “We had a lot of concern about people that were worried about trying to get back into an area that we evacuated to get their pets. GFR is not going to be abandoning that area without doing that, so that’s not something that people potentially have to worry about.”

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Geoff Duncan’s Campaign Trail Hits Augusta: What to Expect on Monday’s Visit

AUGUSTA, Ga. () – On Monday, Georgia gubernatorial hopeful Geoff Duncan visited Augusta, where he addressed supporters at the IBEW Local 1579 located on Reynolds Street.

Duncan, one of three Democratic contenders seeking the nomination, highlighted his previous tenure as lieutenant governor, emphasizing his efforts to enhance healthcare access in rural areas. He pledged that, if elected, his focus would shift to reducing costs in various sectors.

Prior to his campaign event, Duncan took the opportunity to visit NewsChannel 6 to discuss his future plans.

“Listen, 90% of Georgians are clear about their stance on commonsense gun laws, including universal background checks, red flag laws, and safe storage laws at home. As governor, I aim to spearhead these initiatives and provide political support to Republicans willing to back these sensible measures,” Duncan stated. “I aspire to have some of them co-sign this legislation because it aligns with public sentiment. It’s just common sense. We should never have to witness another mass shooting on TV and think it could have been prevented with straightforward laws already available.”

Forensic Breakthrough: Decades-Old Textiles Lead to Conviction in Cold Case Murder

0

A man who evaded justice for nearly 40 years has finally been sentenced to life in prison after being identified through a covert DNA sample obtained with assistance from the FBI.

A judge in Santa Barbara County handed down the maximum sentence to 59-year-old Aloysius Winthrop James, ensuring he will spend the rest of his life behind bars without the possibility of parole.

Earlier this year, a jury found James guilty of first-degree murder in the death of 30-year-old Ofelia Sandoval. The jury also determined that the murder was committed in conjunction with a rape, a special circumstance that influenced the sentencing.

The tragic events unfolded on September 18, 1988, in Santa Maria, where Sandoval was discovered strangled. Despite an intensive investigation at the time, the case went cold the following year, leaving her family without answers for decades.

A collection of booking photos spanning the years provides a visual timeline of Aloysius Winthrop James. It was DNA evidence that ultimately linked him to the crime he committed in 1988. (Santa Maria Police Department)

For decades, it stayed that way.

“For nearly four decades, the 1988 murder of Ofelia Sandoval remained unsolved. This past week, justice was delivered,” the FBI said.

The break didn’t come until years later, as DNA technology advanced. In the early 2000s, investigators developed a DNA profile from evidence collected in Sandoval’s room, but it didn’t match anyone in national databases.

Investigators said DNA evidence ultimately became the key to solving the case. According to Cal Coast News, evidence collected in 1988 included DNA found on a towel and shirt near Sandoval’s body. When that evidence was tested years later, it did not match anyone in law enforcement databases at the time.

That’s when the FBI partnered with Santa Maria police to obtain a covert DNA sample from James. As the case was revisited, investigators later obtained DNA linked to James, including from a glove he discarded, which ultimately matched the profile developed from the original evidence, authorities said, Cal Coast News reported.

James was arrested in Georgia in April 2024. A jury ultimately found him guilty.

“A jury in California convicted Aloysius Winthrop James of first-degree murder in this long-running cold case — a breakthrough made possible in part by the work of the FBI in Atlanta collecting a covert DNA sample,” the FBI said.

During the investigation and again after his arrest, James denied having any contact with Sandoval, according to Cal Coast News. But at trial, he admitted the two had sex, while claiming he initially lied because his father was a pastor.

His attorney argued the DNA evidence did not prove he committed the murder.

Now, investigators believe there could be more victims.

“Investigators believe there may be additional victims connected to James involving threats, sexual assault, domestic abuse, or other crimes,” the FBI said, urging anyone with information to contact the Santa Maria Police Department.

Santa Barbara County District Attorney John Savrnoch called the sentencing “the culmination of almost 38 years of work,” and said it marks the beginning of “some sense of closure” for Sandoval’s family.

That closure has been a long time coming.

According to prosecutors, four generations of Sandoval’s family supported the case over the years. In court, her children spoke about the lasting impact of her death.

“The bravery, dedication, and resilience of Ofelia’s three children, Marcelino, Maricela and Alex, is truly remarkable,” the DA’s office said.

Fox News Digital reached out to James’ lawyer for comment.

Media Outcry: Journalists Urge Boycott of Trump’s WH Correspondents’ Dinner Appearance

0

In a notable shift, President Donald Trump has decided to end his hiatus from the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner. This Saturday, he will make his debut appearance at the event often referred to as “the nerd prom,” where journalists gather to celebrate their profession in a slightly less glamorous version of the Oscars.

Weijia Jiang, who leads the White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA), expressed her excitement on X, stating, “We’re pleased the president has accepted our invitation and eagerly await his presence.” President Trump’s attendance coincides with the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, and he will be accompanied by First Lady Melania Trump.

However, not everyone in the media is thrilled about this development. Some journalists are uncomfortable with the idea of a jovial evening with President Trump and are calling for a protest. The question is, what form will this protest take? Will there be chants declaring the essence of democracy, or perhaps a rendition of “Which side are you on?” Maybe they’ll even perform a choreographed routine in their formal wear.

A letter circulating among media circles, signed by 250 journalists, urges the WHCA to reconsider their decision. Notable signatories include Sam Donaldson, Dan Rather, and Jackie Judd, among others, expressing their discontent with the president’s participation.

The letter states, in part:

The letter reads, in part:

To the Officers, Board of Directors, and Members of the White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA):

We, the undersigned, call upon the White House Correspondents’ Association to use the occasion of the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, to forcefully demonstrate opposition to President Trump’s efforts to trample freedom of the press.

The dinner has long served as a symbol of the vital and irreplaceable role of a free press in American democracy and a celebration of the First Amendment and the journalists who uphold it. President Trump’s systematic, sustained, and unprecedented attacks on the free press (detailed below) render his presence at such an event a profound contradiction of its purpose.

The collective weight of the administration’s actions — retaliatory access bands, coercive regulatory investigations, frivolous lawsuits against the press, defunding of public broadcasting, dismantling of international broadcasting, physical restrictions on journalists, personal verbal attacks on reporters, assaults on the media in official White House press releases and social media posts, the arrests of journalists, and the pardoning of those who committed violence against the press — represent the most systematic and comprehensive assault on freedom of the press by a sitting American president.

Already Terrible WHCA Appoints a New Head, and Somehow Manages to Get Comically Worse

So, President Joe Biden called lids at 11 a.m., rescinded press access to 440 media outlets, and limited press to selected outlets and pre-programmed questions. But President Donald Trump holds press scrums on the tarmac of Joint Base Andrews on the regular, and answers questions unscripted and off-the-cuff, wherever he goes. Trump also responds to journalists’ calls to his cell phone at all hours.

So, who, exactly, is a threat to the First Amendment?

Take all the seats, whiners.

There is a long tradition of presidents attending the White House Correspondents Association Dinner. But these are not normal times, and this cannot be business as usual with the press standing up to applaud the man who attacks them on a daily basis.

We understand that some journalists plan to wear pocket handkerchiefs or lapel pins with the words the First Amendment. And continuing in that spirit, we believe the White House Correspondents Association should take stronger action by issuing — from the podium — a forceful defense of freedom of the press and condemnation of those who threaten that freedom, followed by a standing toast to the First Amendment and a pledge to continue upholding such a critical cornerstone of our democracy. Speak forcefully, in front of the man who seeks to undermine our country’s long tradition of an independent, strong, and free press.

Yeah, this is gonna be brutal. Trump takes down these folks’ gotcha questions and poorly framed logic with precision. Trust me, whatever they have planned, he’ll be loaded for bear.

We also urge the WHCA to reaffirm, without equivocation, that freedom of the press is not a partisan issue and that the Association will not normalize this behavior but instead fight back against any officeholder who has waged systemic war against the journalists whose work the dinner celebrates.

The letter ends with a two-and-a-half-page laundry list of “Trump Administration’s Attack on the Free Press,” along with the 250 signatories listed alphabetically.

Here is where these fauxnalists tank their entire argument. This screed is nothing BUT partisan. Where were their protests when President Barack Obama spied on then-Fox News correspondent James Rosen and then-CBS News investigative journalist Sharyl Attkisson? Non-existent. They gladly toasted and took photos with the “first Black President” because he represented their values and the correct political leanings.

The fact that the people who signed on to this letter, and those who will attend the dinner, are still publishing under their bylines or trotting on to whatever news outlet finds them interesting to spout about how terrible Trump is, is proof that the First Amendment is alive and well, and their protests are merely performative theater. The legacy media loses credibility by the day, especially when they cannot even distinguish NAFTA from NATO.

There is real suppression of the First Amendment happening, though: look no further than California and the so-called “Stop Nick Shirley” Act that is designed to suppress independent journalism and free speech. That same Nick Shirley has done the work of helping to expose corruption and further the First Amendment, yet he has to hire personal security because he’s getting death threats. This bunch thinks they’re being targeted if their Starbucks order is wrong.

This dinner is the most vain-glorious event ever put on in DC  – and that’s saying a lot.

I don’t know why any Republican would go. The press will toast itself, brag about how they are saving the republic, and only Democrats will agree.

The biggest threat to the press is the press. They’re the ones who lost their customers trust long ago.

2025 Insurance Alert: Hail Storms Dominate Claims as Global Conflicts Spike Repair Costs

0
Severe hail storms that pummelled Queensland‘s south-east and northern New South Wales last year left a higher insurance bill than ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred, the Insurance Council of Australia (ICA) has revealed, as it warns war in the Middle East will only increase the costs associated with repairing and rebuilding homes after extreme weather.

The Insurance Council of Australia (ICA) has revised its projections for insurance losses due to extreme weather in 2025, elevating the estimated figure from $3.5 billion to $4.8 billion. This increase reflects rising costs and a surge in claims.

One of the key contributors to this adjustment was a severe storm accompanied by hail in November, which resulted in nearly 93,000 insurance claims. The damages amounted to $1.78 billion, encompassing vehicle hail damage, shattered glass, damaged roofs, and homes flooded by stormwater and felled trees.

In contrast, a weather event named Alfred, although generating a higher number of claims at 133,000, incurred lower costs, totaling around $1.5 billion.

Queensland bore the brunt of the financial impact, accounting for four out of the five costliest extreme weather events. The North Queensland floods and the spring storms in south-east Queensland alone inflicted damages of $316 million and $895 million, respectively.

“Queensland is accustomed to facing extreme weather, but experiencing four severe events in a single year is significant,” remarked ICA CEO Andrew Hall. “Many communities are still on the path to recovery.”

“The insurance industry is very alive to supply chain challenges and pressures across the construction and transport sectors as a result of ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

“The reality is, these cost increases will add to the already stubbornly high price to rebuild and repair homes when they are damaged.”

The ICA also found across the country, insurers handled almost six times as many claims from extreme weather in 2025 than the year before, costing $4.8 billion in insured losses and a whopping $8.6 billion when adding the wider economic costs.

The most effective way to protect communities and ease cost pressures is to build the flood levees, dams and other large-scale infrastructure that keep homes and businesses out of harm’s way,” Hall said.

Mike Brown Reconsiders Knicks’ Substitution Strategy Amid Growing Pressure for Change

0

Mike Brown may need to reconsider a particular tactic he’s relied on throughout the season.

This approach, which has been a staple for him, has negatively impacted the Knicks in both matchups of the current series.

Brown typically opts to rest Jalen Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns at the beginning of the second and fourth quarters, rather than staggering their playing time to keep one active on the court. The alternative lineup featuring Miles McBride, Landry Shamet, Jordan Clarkson, and Mitchell Robinson faltered during the Knicks’ narrow 107-106 defeat to the Hawks on Monday night at Madison Square Garden.

“We’ve used that lineup frequently toward the end of the season,” Brown remarked. “It has performed well in the past. Tonight, however, we struggled and committed too many turnovers during that stretch. Yet, we had moments with our starters where we led by eight to ten points, and Atlanta managed to close the gap. Therefore, I wouldn’t attribute the outcome solely to that specific lineup.”

Despite entering the second quarter with a nine-point advantage, the Knicks saw the Hawks launch a 13-3 run as Brunson and Towns sat out, overtaking the lead. The Knicks’ bench, especially Shamet, struggled to make an impact, prompting Brown to substitute Jose Alvarado—who was seemingly out of the playoff rotation—into the game for Shamet. When the Knicks starters returned, they managed to reclaim a seven-point lead by halftime.

In the fourth quarter, it was Alvarado on the floor — instead of Shamet — along with McBride and Clarkson to start the quarter. They began the quarter up 12. By the time Brunson and Towns subbed back in with 7:56 left in the game, they led by nine.

Then, with the starters on the floor, came the collapse.

“We trust any one of our guys in this locker room to be in that game at any time,” Towns said of sitting at the same time as Brunson. “What I do know is the time we were off the court wasn’t when we lost.”

The draft pick is set.

The Knicks will have the No. 24 pick in this year’s draft. Six teams with identical records had their ties broken by random drawing Monday, conducted by the NBA.

The Knicks (53-29) won their tiebreaker over the Lakers.

OG Anunoby finished 10th in Defensive Player of the Year voting.

Earlier this month, he expressed his belief that he should win the award. But that finish should give him a good shot at making one of the All-Defensive teams, another honor for which he has vouched for himself.

The Onion Sets Sights on Transforming Infowars into Satirical Hub

0

CHICAGO — The Onion, renowned for its satirical take on current events, has unveiled intentions to step into the shoes of Infowars, the controversial platform led by conspiracy theorist Alex Jones. This move comes as Jones’ company faces the brink of liquidation, plagued by over $1 billion in defamation penalties owed to families of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting victims.

In a filing submitted on Monday to a Texas state judge, The Onion seeks an exclusive, temporary license to utilize Infowars’ intellectual property. If approved, this would grant the satirical outlet the ability to feature its unique content across Infowars’ digital platforms, including its website and social media channels.

Ben Collins, The Onion’s chief executive, revealed that the arrangement could be operational by April 30, contingent upon the approval of Judge Maya Guerra Gamble in Austin. Collins disclosed that The Onion has already recruited talent, including Tim Heidecker—one half of the comedic duo Tim and Eric, famous for their work on Cartoon Network’s “Adult Swim”—to transform Infowars into a parody site.

“We aim to expand this into a broader comedy network,” Collins stated in a phone interview on Monday. He assured that profits generated from this revamped operation would benefit the Sandy Hook families.

Collins further added, “Today, people often consume news from individuals who, without any credible expertise, broadcast conspiracy theories or dubious health advice that could be harmful. Our goal is to craft a series of characters and narratives that parody these types of phenomena.”

After the 2012 Sandy Hook shooting, which killed 20 first graders and six educators in Newtown, Connecticut, Jones called it a hoax staged by “crisis actors” in an effort to increase gun control. Many relatives of the victims, along with an FBI agent who responded to the shooting, sued Jones and his company for defamation and infliction of emotional distress.

On his show Monday, Jones vowed to fight the licensing proposal in court but acknowledged he and his crew could be kicked out of the building at the end of the month. He said he would continue his shows in another studio he is preparing, and they would air on his personal X account and other new social media accounts and websites, as well as dozens of radio stations. He also has set up new websites for the merchandise he sells, including dietary supplements and clothing that bring in millions of dollars a year.

“I’m going to continue the exact same show,” he said. “It’ll just be called the ‘Alex Jones Show.’ So, it’s the same satellite, same system. It’s a different news site and news studio. So I’m not going anywhere.”

The licensing deal with The Onion would be for six months, with the right to renew it for another six months as a court-appointed receiver works to eventually sell the assets of Infowars’ parent company, Austin-based Free Speech Systems, and give proceeds to the Sandy Hook families. The receiver is supporting the plan, which calls for The Onion to pay $81,000 a month to cover the rent for the building housing Infowars’ studios, along with utilities and other costs.

During a trial of the defamation suit in Connecticut in 2022, victims’ relatives testified that people whom they called followers of Jones subjected them to death and rape threats, in-person harassment and abusive comments on social media over the hoax claims. Jones argued there was never any proof that linked him to the actions of others.

A jury and judge awarded the families and the FBI agent more than $1.4 billion in damages. In a similar lawsuit in Texas, the parents of a child killed at Sandy Hook were awarded nearly $50 million. Jones appealed both awards. He lost his challenges to the Connecticut judgment, while his appeal of the Texas award is still pending.

Jones filed for bankruptcy in late 2022. In those proceedings, an auction was held in November 2024 to liquidate Infowars’ assets to help pay the defamation judgments, and The Onion was named the winning bidder. But the bankruptcy judge threw out the auction results, citing problems with the process and The Onion’s bid.

The attempt to sell off Infowars’ assets later moved to the state court in Texas, where Guerra Gamble appointed a receiver to liquidate the assets of Jones’ company. Jones is also appealing that ruling, which has put a hold on the liquidation.

A lawyer for the Sandy Hook families who sued Jones in Connecticut said they support The Onion’s plan.
