Ryan Hanafin Arrested in Vermont After Mom Andria Found Shot Dead in Mass.

0

A 22-year-old man was arrested in Vermont on Thursday after his mother was discovered fatally shot inside the kitchen of the family’s home in Reading, Massachusetts, police said.

Ryan Hanafin became the focus of a regional search after his father, 48-year-old Matthew Hanafin, called police at about 12:38 a.m. He told investigators that he had returned to the Center Avenue residence and found his 49-year-old wife, Andria Hanafin, dead in the kitchen, according to Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan.

Vermont State Police said Hanafin was believed to have connections in Warren, Vermont. Officers searching the area located him roughly two hours later along Vermont Route 100, south of Sugarbush Access Road, authorities said.

State troopers and local law enforcement took him into custody without incident at approximately 2:30 p.m. Eastern time.

Details about his court appearance were not immediately available. Hanafin is expected to appear in Vermont before potentially being extradited to Massachusetts, where he could face criminal charges. Investigators have referred to him as a “person of interest,” not a suspect.

The district attorney said the couple’s 13-year-old child was inside the home when Andria Hanafin was killed. The family also has a daughter.

According to the DA, police had received “no significant history” of calls involving the Hanafin residence.

The younger son had been out with friends until around 9 p.m. He told investigators that he went straight to his bedroom after returning home and did not see his mother, Ryan said.

Reading Police Chief David J. Clark emphasized that although Hanafin remains a person of interest, he should be considered “potentially armed and dangerous.” Police asked anyone who spotted him or the vehicle to immediately call 911.

“By all means, please do not approach him,” Clark said. “Please contact 911, the local police department, whatever, if you see the vehicle or come across him. We are urging people to stay safe and not put themselves in danger.”

Mistress of American Idol Singer Denies Helping Him Kill His Wife

0

The mistress of a former American Idol contestant has rejected claims that she helped him plot the killing of his wife, despite sending messages saying she wanted the woman “gone.”

Nick Gounaris, an attorney for Alleigha Botner, told Fox News Digital that his client’s disturbing messages did not make her an accomplice to Caleb Flynn’s crime.

Flynn, 40, was found guilty on September 29 of murdering his wife, Ashley, by shooting her in the head as she slept in their Ohio home on February 16. He was sentenced on Monday to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

A former pastor, Flynn killed Ashley after beginning an affair with Botner, who worked at the church where both were members of the worship team.

The couple’s messages became central to the murder trial. Jurors were shown more than 100,000 texts exchanged during the pair’s approximately 18-month relationship.

“Look, she’ll take full responsibility for her actions,” Gounaris told Fox News Digital.

“The truth is that she had an affair with a married man and she said terrible things about that man’s wife. That’s what she did.

“What the public has wrong is that she was somehow involved in the planning or execution of the murder Caleb committed on February 16, 2026. That’s what the public has wrong. She accepts full responsibility for her own actions, but not for what he was convicted of,” he added.

Botner became emotional during the trial when she was required to read one particularly disturbing exchange with Flynn aloud.

“Do you know how badly I want to say, ‘F it’ to any rules and any barriers and just love you with my entire heart for the rest of my life?” she wrote to Flynn in July 2025.

She then made a chilling confession: “I want to kill her, Caleb. It’s so bad.”

Flynn replied: “That makes two of us.”

In another exchange, Flynn allegedly asked Botner to arrange for someone to kill Ashley, using a derogatory nickname the pair had assigned to her: “Please hire someone to take douche out. I need you.”

“So tempting,” Botner replied.

Flynn allegedly told Botner in August that he had spent much of the previous night considering how Ashley could be killed without sending him to prison.

“I was up until 4am last night crying, literally thinking of ways to kill her and not go to jail,” he wrote.

Botner responded by clearly telling Flynn not to kill Ashley.

“I’m not asking that you take her life, obviously, because that’s not what you should do, and I know you actually wouldn’t,” she wrote.

‘But to make the divorce happen, it would change everything.’

Flynn responded: ‘I’ll work on getting rid of her. Until then, I love you.’

In another September 2025 message, Flynn listed what he was prepared to sacrifice to be with his mistress, including his daughters.

He said he was willing to risk his ‘daughters, a quarter-million-dollar salary job, a place to live, possibly a church I serve at, public shame and humiliation, and way more.’

Botner, meanwhile, repeatedly demanded that he leave Ashley.

‘Until she’s gone, I’m gone,’ she wrote in one ultimatum.

But under questioning from Flynn’s defense, Botner insisted the ominous language was about ending the marriage.

‘I always meant divorce,’ she testified.

‘I think the reason that she wasn’t charged is just because you say something, you still have to show that that person was somehow involved,’ Gounaris told Fox.

‘The evidence that was reviewed, the evidence that was developed, the evidence that they secured through all of these different avenues did not suggest anything that involved Alleigha Botner in the death of Ashley Flynn.’

Botner testified that she was just 20 when she met Flynn at Christian Life Center in Dayton in 2022, where she was an intern and he was in his mid-30s.

Their relationship became romantic in early 2024, she said.

By the night before Ashley’s death, prosecutors said the secret relationship was reaching a decisive moment.

Botner sent Flynn information she had researched about divorce proceedings, custody, deleting messages and how Ashley could potentially prove her husband’s infidelity.

‘All of the communications that are contemporaneous with the time that he kills his wife all the way up to 12:45 in that morning – about an hour and 45 minutes… before he calls 911 – are all about divorce,’ Gounaris said.

Shortly before midnight, Flynn sent his mistress one final message.

‘Good night, tomorrow’s a big day. I’ve got to get to bed,’ he wrote. ‘I choose you, I’m about to be free.’

Hours later, Ashley was dead.

Botner testified that the timing immediately alarmed her.

‘Caleb, what’s going on? Were you involved? Is this real?’ she messaged Flynn on the morning of the killing.

She later deleted the message because she feared investigators would examine his phone and discover their affair, she admitted.

Botner initially told the FBI she did not believe Flynn had murdered his wife, but later changed her view, describing Ashley’s death as ‘way too much of a coincidence.’

Asked in court how she feels about her former lover now, her answer was far simpler.

‘I hate him.’

Flynn appeared on American Idol in 2013, telling TV viewers his wife had encouraged him to chase his dreams on the singing competition.

Bodies of Australian TV Presenter Jesse Baird and Flight Attendant Luke Davies Found in Bushland

0

Detectives discovered the decomposing bodies of Jesse Baird and Luke Davies stacked together inside surfboard bags and partially covered with rocks, branches and foliage beside a fence on a rural property.

Images from the scene in Bungonia, around 200km south of Sydney, were shown in the NSW Supreme Court on Friday during Beau Lamarre-Condon’s double murder trial. Some of the most disturbing photographs were redacted.

Lamarre-Condon, a former police officer, has pleaded not guilty to allegedly shooting his ex-boyfriend, Baird, 26, and Baird’s new partner, Davies, 29, in Paddington on February 19, 2024.

The jury heard the men’s bodies were concealed in the surfboard bags for eight days during summer, without refrigeration, before police located them.

Senior Sergeant Christine Abela became emotional while giving evidence on Wednesday, telling the court she could smell the bodies as soon as she stepped out of the car. The odour grew stronger as she approached the fence.

Court-released photographs appear to show an alleged attempt to conceal the bodies beneath rocks, tree branches and foliage. The bright blue surfboard bags, however, remained clearly visible.

Ms Abela said Baird’s body had allegedly been placed inside a black garbage bag, then an inner surfboard bag and an outer bag. It was stacked on top of Davies’s body, which was also contained in inner and outer surfboard bags.

Both men were in an advanced state of decomposition, the court heard. Detectives were forced to identify them at the scene by comparing the rings and earrings on the bodies with photographs posted on their Instagram accounts.

Baird’s family was present when his remains were discovered at the property.

Ms Abela told the court that black garbage bags were found near the bodies, along with two keys: one for an iron security door and another house key that opened the front door of Baird’s rental property.

Former senior constable Greg Moon later testified that Lamarre-Condon had allegedly left several items of evidence near the bodies, including blood-stained bedsheets, his fingerprints and DNA, and a Budget car rental card bearing his name.

Lamarre-Condon is accused of hiring a van from a car dealership on the day he allegedly killed Baird and Davies, then using it to transport their bodies from Paddington to Bungonia.

Baird’s driver’s licence and passport were also found at the site, cut into several pieces. Investigators discovered Bunnings receipts that matched purchases prosecutors say Lamarre-Condon made in the days following the alleged murders.

The items included an angle grinder, gum boots, garbage bags, coveralls, gloves, cable ties, cement, a wheelbarrow, weights and high-vis clothing.

Prosecutors allege Lamarre-Condon was “obsessed” with Baird and unable to accept the end of their on-off relationship, which lasted from late 2022 until mid-2023.

Sen. Jon Ossoff Directs Nazi Jab at Trump Loyalist in Fiery Political Clash

Senator Jon Ossoff accused Representative Mike Collins of staffing his congressional office with “half of the Third Reich” during a tense Georgia Senate debate Thursday night.

The Democratic senator repeatedly redirected questions about artificial-intelligence data centers, the war in Iran, immigration and Flock surveillance cameras toward allegations involving his Republican opponent’s connections to extremist figures.

“And that’s the problem, Mike. It’s not just that you’ve hired half of the Third Reich to staff your congressional office and you have promoted neo-Nazi content online,” Ossoff said.

He established that combative tone in his opening remarks, accusing Collins of bringing disrepute to Georgia through his “personal bigotry and his widely documented ties to white nationalists.”

Collins faced another setback earlier Thursday when the Senate GOP’s leading super PAC moved nearly $2 million in planned advertising from Georgia to neighboring South Carolina, where another Senate contest is underway, according to AdImpact Politics.

Collins responded by portraying Ossoff as an affluent liberal disconnected from the concerns of ordinary Americans.

“He’s a trust fund kid who’s never had a job in his life,” Collins said.

The debate’s discussion of AI data centers also gave Ossoff an opening to return to the issue of extremism.

Ossoff criticized Collins for supporting President Donald Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill, arguing that the legislation had imposed financial harm on Georgians before pivoting back to the allegations surrounding extremist content.

A family photograph on Representative Mike Collins’ campaign website shows his daughter, Summer Collins, with her husband, David Alan Scheer II, a social media influencer accused of sharing antisemitic conspiracy theories, white-nationalist material and imagery associated with Nazism.

Ossoff’s accusations followed a moderator’s questions about two men: former Collins staffer Preston Parra and Collins’ son-in-law, David Alan Scheer II.

Parra, who previously worked as a Collins intern and contractor, operates an X account that has featured Nazi imagery, racial slurs and references to “White Power,” as well as nearly nude selfies.

A Collins campaign spokesman condemned the posts as “vile” and “completely unhinged,” saying Parra has no current connection to the congressman’s office or campaign.

Scheer, a fitness and masculinity influencer with about 1.5 million followers, has also faced accusations that he shared antisemitic conspiracy theories, white-nationalist material and propaganda linked to Nazi ideology.

He also liked a comment quoting “Erika,” a German marching song associated with the Nazi era.

Scheer is registered to vote at a property owned by Collins and has appeared in photographs connected to the campaign.

Collins accused Ossoff of spreading inflammatory claims about his family, never directly denouncing his son-in-law’s online persona

Should politicians be held accountable for the views or actions of their family and staff?

Collins has said Scheer plays no role in his campaign and that he does not share his son-in-law’s views.

Asked by the moderator what family dinners looked like at his home, Collins rejected the premise and accused Ossoff of spreading inflammatory claims about his family. He did not denounce Scheer by name.

‘That’s my family. And the craziness Jon Ossoff is spewing,’ Collins said.

He said family members had received death threats and pointed to the arrest this week of a New York man accused of threatening him and Scheer.

‘I’ve condemned racism, anti-Semitism, hate. I don’t care where the source is,’ Collins said. ‘It’s wrong. We have no place in this world for that.’

Ossoff kept pressing. ‘Imagine running for the US Senate while neo-Nazi propaganda is disseminated to an audience of millions from your home,’ he said.

He also invoked the late civil rights leader John Lewis, a towering figure in Georgia politics.

‘If John Lewis was marching from Selma to Montgomery, Mike Collins would be grabbing a billy club,’ Ossoff said.

Collins sought to paint Ossoff as an out-of-touch liberal, repeatedly raising his links to Michigan Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed and far-left streamer Hasan Piker.

The pair also clashed over a House Ethics Committee investigation Collins faces over allegations involving his former chief of staff, Brandon Phillips.

The probe centers on payments to Phillips’ girlfriend, Caroline Craze, who was hired as an intern and allegedly received more than $10,000. Witnesses told investigators they never saw her working in the office.

Collins dismissed the accusations as a ‘nothing-burger,’ denied wrongdoing and challenged the House Ethics Committee to release its findings.

Ossoff has maintained a lead in public polling throughout the race, with surveys consistently putting the Democratic incumbent ahead of Collins.

The prediction market Kalshi currently gives Ossoff a 96 percent chance of winning the election.

If Ossoff can once again deliver a win for Georgia, his increasingly high-profile rallies and viral attacks on Trump have further raised his national profile, fueling speculation about whether the senator could emerge as a potential 2028 Democratic presidential contender.

But Ossoff has repeatedly squashed the rumors, saying he has ‘zero interest’ in running for president in 2028 and calling the speculation ‘fantasy football.’

Why 6-Year-Old Boy Who Shot Virginia Teacher Wasn’t Charged

0

The 6-year-old Virginia boy who shot his first-grade teacher in the chest and later unleashed a profanity-filled, camera-captured tirade at another educator was never criminally charged in connection with the attack.

Instead, the child, identified by authorities only as J.T., was placed in inpatient psychiatric care for 227 days after shooting teacher Abby Zwerner in front of 16 classmates on Jan. 6, 2023, court records show.

Police body-camera video released this week captures the moments after the shooting at Richneck Elementary School in Newport News, a city roughly 70 miles southwest of Richmond. The footage shows the boy cursing at officers and making threats shortly after opening fire in his classroom.

“Both y’all want a f–king piece of me, b—h?!” J.T. shouts at police in the video. Richneck reading specialist Amy Kovac can be seen holding him in a bear hug while repeatedly urging him to “stop.”

“F–k you, b—h,” the boy replies, according to the footage. Officers also locate a 9 mm Taurus handgun on the ground nearby.

“I stole that from my mom,” J.T. tells police, indicating the weapon he had taken from his mother’s purse earlier that morning.

During her conversation with officers, Kovac also refers to previous concerns involving the child’s behavior and school routine.

“He has been on a modified schedule. His mother is to pick him up at 2:30. This is his first week without his mother coming to school with him,” she says in the video.

J.T.’s mother, Deja Nicole Taylor, later served nearly two years in prison after pleading guilty to felony child neglect in Virginia and federal firearms charges. The federal case was partly tied to her falsely reporting marijuana use on the background-check form she completed when purchasing the handgun used in the shooting.

Court proceedings in the case also revealed troubling details about J.T.’s life before the school shooting.

When he was 5, prosecutors said, J.T. twice took his mother’s keys without permission and drove her car alone. One of those incidents ended in a crash.

The boy’s parents also had their own histories with law enforcement.

Prosecutors alleged that one month before J.T. carried the gun into school, Taylor, now 29, fired it during an argument with the child’s father, Malik Ellison. No one was injured.

Police records obtained by WAVY News show that Taylor later sought a protective order and filed multiple reports against Ellison. She and at least one other woman accused him of physical abuse.

Taylor was released from prison in February. J.T., meanwhile, remains in the care of his great-grandfather, who has argued that child-welfare authorities failed to protect the boy well before the shooting.

“He was a victim before that date,” Calvin Taylor told the outlet in January 2024.

“Contrary to popular belief, I know they said that my granddaughter neglected him and placed him in precarious situations, but there were instances where she tried to get help. I drove her to certain places. My other daughters drove her to places to acquire help, even the safety plan that they put in place after the car incident. There was no follow-up,” he said.

At the time of that interview, Calvin Taylor said J.T. was earning strong grades at his new school and beginning to accept responsibility for the shooting, which left Zwerner with wounds to her hand and chest.

“I’m grateful that I have an opportunity to spend time with him daily and that I have an opportunity to watch him grow up as a young man without a lot of baggage. I’m also grateful that he understands that it was an egregious mistake and that he’s not going to be defined by that mistake,” he said.

Abnormal Water Levels Reported Near Apopka Neighborhood

APOPKA, Fla. – Water levels at Heineger Lake near Apopka have risen noticeably after several days of heavy rain, with one nearby resident describing the conditions as “abnormal.”

The neighbor told News 6 that she has watched the lake steadily climb in recent days as high volumes of rainfall moved through Central Florida.

“But she’s even more worried about flooding closer to home,” News 6 Community Correspondent Paul Dolan explained.

While rising water levels at Heineger Lake are a cause for concern, a nearby neighbor said she’s more worried about the water that’s now pooling close to her backyard. (WKMG-TV 2026)

Water collecting behind her house reportedly reached about 6 inches deep, raising concerns about how close the flooding was getting to the property.

Heineger Lake was not the only location experiencing unusually high water.

Dolan also checked conditions at Lake Ruden in Apopka, near Chick-fil-A, where water levels were significantly higher than normal.

“You’ll have periods of time — like right now, for example — 15, 20 minutes where it’s not raining at all,” Dolan said. “But then, all of a sudden, for 15, 20, 30 minutes or even longer, there will be nonstop rain.”

[RELATED: Take a look as Dolan examines flooding at Lake Ruden]

The rising water comes as a flood watch remains in effect across all of Central Florida.

Additional rounds of heavy rain are expected to form and track along a stalled front over the region. Rainfall rates could occasionally exceed 2 to 4 inches per hour, while the ground remains saturated after days of persistent, heavy rainfall.

Flooding is most likely in heavily developed areas where drainage is limited.

A flood watch means conditions are favorable for flooding to occur. Drivers should never attempt to cross flooded roads. Remember: Turn around, don’t drown.

The unsettled weather pattern is expected to continue through at least the beginning of the weekend.

Logan Federico’s Dad Says Victims Forgotten, Seeks Registry

0

The father of Logan Federico, a 22-year-old college student killed during a home invasion, is calling on federal lawmakers to close legal loopholes that allow repeat offenders to return to the streets.

Stephen Federico is advocating for “Logan’s Law,” a proposed measure that would create a public database of repeat violent offenders, require communication between counties and states, and increase accountability for prosecutors handling habitual criminals.

The legislation is intended to address the system failures that allowed Logan’s accused killer, Alexander Dickey, to avoid long-term imprisonment despite a lengthy criminal history.

On Thursday, Federico spoke during a crime-reduction roundtable in South Carolina attended by U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche, urging support for Logan’s Law, which would establish a registry for repeat violent offenders. (House Judiciary Committee/Screenshot; Police handout)

“This was preventable. And d—–, I’m not going to save just one more life,” Federico said Thursday at the South Carolina roundtable attended by Attorney General Todd Blanche. “I’m going to save thousands.”

Federico said Logan’s death reflected broader failures in the criminal justice system, drawing a comparison to gaps in immigration enforcement.

“We are fighting 15 million that crossed our borders — some horrific criminals, some not,” he said. “Now we’re also fighting the constant felon. How are we supposed to win without Logan’s Law?”

U.S. Rep. Russell Fry, R-S.C., and the late Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., introduced Logan’s Law, but the proposal has not yet formally reached the floor of either the House or Senate.

“Common sense works. Common sense is easy,” Fry said, comparing the measure with existing public registries. “We have a sexual abuse registry that is publicly searchable. This is for violent crimes. It’s the same concept.”

Attorney General Blanche urged Congress to act quickly on the proposal.

“It took a tragedy to push it to the forefront,” Blanche said. “But that’s OK. I think the worst thing we could do is not act.”

Blanche said he hoped the bill would attract bipartisan backing. “I don’t think it’s a controversial issue,” he said. “I know President Trump supports it.”

Logan Federico, a North Carolina college student, was staying with friends at a South Carolina home on May 3, 2025, when Dickey allegedly broke in.

Columbia police said Dickey drove a stolen vehicle into the neighborhood, entered another home to steal vehicle keys and a gun, and then forced his way into the house where Federico was staying.

Police allege that Dickey took credit cards from inside the home and fatally shot Federico. Her father said she was awake when the break-in occurred.

“He didn’t kill our daughter for a debit card,” Federico said. “She was the only one awake who could identify him. He killed a witness.”

Dickey’s criminal record stretches back to 2013 and includes convictions for breaking and entering, burglary, grand larceny, strong-arm robbery, possession of a stolen vehicle and resisting arrest. Critics and authorities say he repeatedly slipped through the cracks of a lenient justice system.

“What we do as a society right now is make the criminal more important than the innocent,” Federico said, criticizing progressive policies such as reduced sentencing and no-cash bail. “We have turned the page. We are the underdogs.”

Green Party Candidate Zack Polanski Concedes Defeat in Holborn By-Election

0

Zack Polanski’s leadership of the Green Party has come under renewed pressure after he suffered a decisive defeat in the Holborn and St Pancras by-election.

Mr Polanski conceded to Labour candidate Sagal Abdi-Wali shortly after 2.30am in the early hours of the morning, in the seat previously held by Sir Keir Starmer.

The result caps a difficult week for the Green leader, who has faced mounting criticism from within and outside the party, alongside speculation that some members may seek to remove him.

One of his predecessors also criticised his handling of the recent anti-Semitism controversy that overshadowed the Green Party Conference and stopped short of backing his continued leadership.

Caroline Lucas, the former Green MP and party leader, accused Mr Polanski in a television interview of avoiding Sunday’s vote on a highly contentious policy declaring that “Zionism is racism”.

She criticised him for leaving the conference in Brighton to campaign in London, rather than remaining to oppose what she described as a “dangerous” motion backed by hardline pro-Palestinian activists.

Green Party members approved a motion that calls for the eventual destruction of Israel and compares its treatment of Palestinians during the Gaza conflict with apartheid-era South Africa.

Mr Polanski had left the conference after delivering a speech on Friday so he could focus on his own campaign in Holborn and St Pancras.

Speaking on the BBC’s Newsnight, Ms Lucas, the former MP for Brighton Pavilion, said Mr Polanski “should have been there and he should have voted”. She added that she had expected him to strongly oppose the motion, which she described as flawed “from top to bottom”.

“It is dangerous, it is divisive, and it tries to impose a single definition of Zionism when we know there are many,” she said.

Asked whether Mr Polanski should remain as Green Party leader, Ms Lucas replied: “Let’s see what happens in the coming days and weeks.”

Caroline Lucas, also a former party leader, castigated Mr Polanski in a TV interview for missing a weekend party conference vote that passed a highly controversial 'Zionism is racism' policy

Caroline Lucas, a former Green Party leader, criticised Mr Polanski in a television interview for missing the conference vote on the controversial “Zionism is racism” policy

The under-pressure 'eco-populist' is standing to replace Sir Keir Starmer in the north London seat but is forecast to be defeated by Labour's Sagal Abdi-Wali in the early hours

The under-pressure “eco-populist” contested the north London seat vacated by Sir Keir Starmer, but was widely expected to lose to Labour’s Sagal Abdi-Wali

A surprise victory would have made Mr Polanski the sixth Green MP in the Commons, while a heavy defeat was expected to intensify scrutiny of his direction for the party

“I want him to address what happened and show the leadership that was missing on Sunday,” Ms Lucas said. “I think the jury is still out on whether he will do that, but I hope he will.”

A Green Party spokesman said Mr Polanski had finished a “close second”, arguing that challenging Labour in one of its safest constituencies demonstrated “just how far the Greens have come”.

The under-pressure “eco-populist” had hoped to succeed Sir Keir Starmer as MP for the north London constituency, although he had trailed Ms Abdi-Wali in betting markets for much of the campaign.

Victory would have given Mr Polanski a sixth Green seat in the House of Commons. Instead, the result is likely to prompt renewed debate about the party’s political direction under his leadership.

The Greens enjoyed a significant polling boost earlier this year, but their momentum has since weakened following a series of gaffes and the rise of Andy Burnham as Labour leader.

The by-election defeat is the latest setback for the party since the former actor and hypnotist became leader in September last year, shifting the Greens further to the left and away from their traditional ecological focus.

After the polls closed, a Conservative spokesman said: ‘If Zack Polanski fails to win this by-election, it will surely be curtains for his leadership of the party.

‘We hope it also marks the end of the Green Party’s sorry embrace of anti-Semitism.’

The Greens tonight suggested that just being the main challenger to Labour was an achievement.

Mr Polanski wrote on social media: ‘The Green Party got 10 per cent last time.

‘Whatever happens tonight – we made Labour work like they never have before. I’m so proud of you all.’

The Green leader had been appealing for help from activists as residents cast their ballots in the contest for Sir Keir Starmer’s old seat.

But Mr Polanski insisted on social media overnight that he ‘can win’, claiming there might be just a ‘few hundred votes in it’.

He pointed to a projection from Poll Check suggesting Labour could get 40.4 per cent of the vote and the Greens 35.6 per cent.

Defeat for Mr Polanski would underline how Mr Burnham’s arrival has flattened the Green surge – which saw them scoop Gorton & Denton in a by-election in February and then secure record-breaking local council results in May.

Holborn & St Pancras has been a Labour stronghold since its formation in 1983, held by Frank Dobson for 32 years and Sir Keir for 11.

There are 13 other candidates in the by-election, including the Conservatives’ Ewan Cameron, Reform UK’s Peter Newman and the Liberal Democrats’ Patrick Thomas Stillman.

Also running is George Galloway of the Workers Party of Britain, despite living overseas in what he describes as ‘self-exile’.

Sir Keir won the Holborn and St Pancras seat in 2024 with 48.9 per cent of the vote (18,884 votes), with independent Andrew Feinstein as runner-up on 18.9 per cent (7,312 votes) and the Greens in third with 10.4 per cent of the vote (4,030 votes).

An 18-year-old P-plater accused of ploughing into Newcastle Knights supporters gathered to farewell the team before the NRL grand final has been granted bail after spending six days behind bars.

Police allege Indika Bambrick Samarasinghe was driving a gold 2006 BMW cabriolet when he lost control in Newcastle, north of Sydney, on the morning of October 3.

A five-year-old girl and a 67-year-old man suffered critical injuries in the collision. Both have since improved and are now listed in serious but stable conditions.

Ten people were injured in the incident. Six have been discharged from hospital, while four remain receiving treatment.

Samarasinghe, a former private school student, was arrested at the scene before being taken to hospital for mandatory testing.

He has been charged with three counts of dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm, three counts of negligent driving occasioning grievous bodily harm and three counts of causing bodily harm by misconduct in charge of a motor vehicle.

Samarasinghe was remanded in custody after appearing in court on Sunday. On Friday, he appeared via video link from Sydney’s Silverwater jail for a bail hearing at Newcastle Local Court.

The apprentice mechanic appeared on screen wearing a white neck brace and made the sign of the cross before the proceedings began.

The court heard that further charges are expected. Judge Trevor Khan described the crash as “extraordinary” during the bail hearing.

“It’s serious, people have sustained very serious injuries,” he said.

“It was a day where there were red and blue jumpers everywhere, all along the roads, thousands of people along the roads.

“Thousands use this roadway and I’ve got to say none of them end up having spun out off the roadway.”

Samarasinghe’s lawyer argued that the teenager would be especially vulnerable in custody because of his age and a reported diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Judge Khan, however, described the supporting evidence as “weak” and questioned the basis for the diagnosis.

“An accredited mental health social worker who has not said how they came to the conclusion that he has PTSD, that seems pretty light,” he said.

“I’m not giving it much weight. How have they come to this conclusion?

“I have to say your client is 18, not been in jail before… if he is not suffering stress, I don’t know when he would.”

Despite his reservations about the medical evidence, Judge Khan said it was not the court’s role to use bail as a form of punishment.

‘My job is not to reflect community outrage,’ he said.

Samarasinghe was released on bail into the care of his mother Nic Bambrick in Sydney with strict conditions surrounding his release.

He is not allowed out between 8pm and 7am and must always be accompanied by at least one of his parents during the day.

Samarasinghe was told to surrender his passport, report to police daily, banned from taking drink or drugs and must not drive.

He is scheduled to return to Newcastle Local Court on October 15.

The Daily Mail has previously revealed Samarasinghe graduated last year from Sydney’s independent Catholic boys’ school Waverley College.

Samarasinghe has lived on one of the prettiest streets in Randwick, in Sydney’s east, with his designer-loving mum and younger brother for almost five years.

Neighbours of his $4million family home said his 20-year-old flash BMW with personalised INDIKA plates was notorious locally for its noisy engine.

His mother is a service designer who works for the Australian Digital Health Agency, and bought the semi-detached four-bedroom home with her sons’ father, Sunil Samarasinghe, in early 2022.

Sunil, who is originally from the UK and is head of technology at the Woolworths Group, lives separately in Woollahra, in Sydney’s eastern suburbs.

On since-deleted social media accounts, Samarasinghe appeared to have a carefree life clubbing with friends and travelling overseas with his mother and brother, most recently visiting Japan.
