As Europe faces yet another scorching heatwave, the ongoing drought has brought the mighty River Danube into the spotlight, uncovering hidden treasures and secrets long submerged beneath its waters.

The Danube, weaving its way through ten diverse countries in central and southeastern Europe, has been a lifeline for trade and a backdrop for historic conflicts throughout the centuries.

Legend has it that in the sixth century BCE, Alexander the Great chased his adversaries, tribes in opposition to his Macedonian empire, to the banks of the mighty Danube.

Now, as relentless droughts leave Europe parched and struggling, the river’s rich and complex past emerges with every inch the waters recede.

One of the most astonishing revelations from the Danube’s shrinking banks is the discovery of ancient woolly mammoth remains, offering a glimpse into a distant prehistoric world.

Scientists were seen gathered around a large bone that was spotted in the banks of the river near the Bulgarian town of Ryahovo. 

So far they have identified a jaw bone, fragments of tusks, part of a shoulder blade and a femur with its articular head among the stash found at the end of July. 

The bones were remarkably well-preserved. Photos appear to show teeth still lining the jaw bone that was found. 

The ancient beasts co-existed with early humans, who hunted them for food and used their tusks and bones as tools. 

A Nazi-era motorcycle was also found after the water levels of the Danube sank to record lows, this time in Hungary’s capital, Budapest. 

The vehicle, which was spotted on the shores of the river opposite the country’s parliament building, was hauled out and cleaned up by military personnel. 

Despite it being thoroughly rusted, the motorcycle had retained its form after decades under the water. 

It has since been put on display at the depot of the Military History Institute and Museum of the Defence Ministry in Budapest. 

Several Nazi-era warships were also found across the Danube. 

One was spotted in front of Djerdap II, a large dam on the Danube River, between Romania and Serbia, near Prahovo, Serbia. 

This was all but destroyed, though large parts of it still remained intact.  

Another, meanwhile, was seen on the riverbed in Baja, Hungary. Large parts of the hull remained together, as well as what appeared to be a motor. 

And in Bulgaria’s Gigen, the foundations of the ancient Constantine Bridge, commissioned by Roman emperor Constantine I and inaugurated in 328AD, were spotted as the water level reached record lows. 

Though the lowered water levels of the twisting river may have provided historians with revelatory new material to investigate, it has also presented a huge problem for Europe’s infrastructure. 

Hungary was forced to switch off its only nuclear plant earlier this month as the water from the Danube that cools it could not reach the reactor.

The river fell to record lows in recent weeks amid a prolonged heatwave and drought across much of Europe, forcing the plant to operate at only around 10 per cent of its capacity with only one of its eight turbines left running.

Droughts this summer have wreaked havoc in European power production, shipping and public health systems, and the hit to the region’s economy can already be measured in the hundreds of billions of euros.

Similar problems in Romania for instance have forced the declaration of a state of energy emergency throughout August, and the flow of the Danube has been redirected to allow its sole nuclear plant to continue operating for the next few days.

Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar said on Monday that work to restart a second turbine at Paks began after the Danube rose 19 centimetres above last week’s low.

The second turbine was expected to start generating electricity on Monday evening, he said on Facebook.

Mr Magyar flagged the possibility of increasing output last week, saying that expected rainfall in Austria could raise Danube levels, but cautioned that the rise would be temporary.

Mr Magyar also said last week that the government was working on longer-term solutions, including reviewing the planned Paks 2 expansion of the plant as current designs also make the planned new plant dependent on cooling water from the Danube.

It was key to keep the nuclear plant working, Mr Magyar said last week, as ‘the Hungarian economy cannot work without the plant for months’.

The government has also decided to diversify its energy supply, with Mr Magyar saying the government will tender 700 megawatts of wind power generation capacity by August 31 and develop four gigawatts of wind capacity by 2030.

Western Europe experienced its hottest June-July on record as climate change fuels an historic summer of heat, drought and wildfires across the region, the EU’s global warming monitor said Monday.

Europe is the world’s fastest-warming continent and the first two months of summer have been marked by successive heatwaves, scorching temperatures and bone-dry conditions.

The Copernicus Climate Change Service said the combined average temperature in western Europe for June-July was 21.62C – beating the 2022 record for the same period.

This reflected ‘the exceptional persistence of heat’ so far this summer, Copernicus said.

Levels of soil moisture were ‘significantly lower’ than in July 2022 when the last severe drought gripped western Europe, Copernicus added.

‘This is a clear example of how climate change is intensifying heat extremes, with heat and drought increasingly reinforcing one another,’ said Samantha Burgess from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, which operates Copernicus.

Spain’s national weather agency AEMET said today that July was the country’s joint-hottest month since records began in 1961. 

The average temperature of 25.7C was 2.6C higher than the 1991-2020 reference period and tied with July 2022 as the warmest month, AEMET said in a statement.

Last month was also mainland Spain’s driest July on record as 4.3 millimetres of rain fell, which represented just 26 per cent of the normal precipitation for the time of year.

Scientists have long warned that human-driven climate change, caused by the burning of fossil fuels, is increasing the length, frequency and intensity of extreme weather events such as heatwaves.

Of the ten warmest months of July recorded in Spain, eight have occurred in the 21st century, AEMET said.

The southeastern region of Murcia reached the highest temperature in AEMET’s main network last month, reaching 44.2C on July 23.

The relentless heat and scarce rainfall created ideal conditions for wildfires that scarred swathes of Spain, including a huge blaze just dozens of kilometres west of the capital Madrid.

The largest wildfire in Spain’s recent history burned more than 50,000 hectares (123,500 acres), forced the evacuation of tens of thousands of people and sparked a national emergency. 

France’s national weather agency, Météo-France, is warning about temperatures approaching 40C from Tuesday onward in southeastern France. 

Heatwave alerts were issued for the first time on record in May, when more than half the country recorded new monthly temperature highs. 

The heat intensified in June, a period during which at least 5,700 more deaths than usual were recorded, according to France’s public health agency.

Météo-France said June 23 was the hottest day ever recorded in the country. Temperatures climbed as high as 44.3C in the southwest.

Two other heatwave episodes were recorded in July, amplifying a historic wildfire in southwestern France that forced 220,000 people to flee their homes in one of the continent’s biggest evacuation efforts since the Second World War. 

Very dry conditions were observed in July across western and central European nations including France, Spain, Austria and Hungary but also the United Kingdom, Ireland and part of Iceland.

River flows were unusually low with the Seine, Rhine and Danube particularly affected. Transport, irrigation and energy production has been affected in several European countries.

These hot and dry conditions were also ideal for fires and scientists say the frequency of extreme fire-prone weather in Europe is increasing with climate change.

Copernicus also said the world’s oceans hit record-high temperatures for a second straight month in July, driven by marine heatwaves around Europe and a powerful El Nino taking shape in the Pacific.

Global average sea surface temperatures in July were 20.96C, beating the previous record of 2023.

Copernicus director Carlo Buontempo said parts of the Mediterranean and Atlantic were unusually warm but the developing El Nino ‘is probably the driving force’ behind the record sea temperatures.

‘We are now facing a very large El Nino – possibly unprecedented in terms of amplitude. It is clear that the contribution coming from the tropical Pacific becomes quite important,’ the climate scientist told reporters on August 5.

El Nino is the warm phase of a natural climate cycle that temporarily raises ocean temperatures in the tropical Pacific and can influence weather extremes like drought and floods around the world.

It also adds heat to a planet already warmed from burning fossil fuels.

El Nino events typically peak at the end of a year before heat is released from the ocean into the atmosphere, pushing up global temperatures.

The last El Nino helped make 2023 and 2024 the second- and first-hottest years on record, respectively.

Mr Buontempo said scientists expect a new record for global average temperatures later this year or early 2027.

Globally, last month was the joint second-warmest July on record with an average surface air temperature 1.47C above the 1850-1900 pre-industrial benchmark, Copernicus said.

The last 11 years have been the hottest on record and ‘we have not seen a climate that warm during our lifetime, and very possibly our civilisation,’ Buontempo said.

‘And the main driver for this warming – as we know – are the greenhouse gases,’ he said.

Oceans absorb most of the excess heat caused by humanity’s carbon emissions and therefore play a key role in regulating the climate.

Hotter seas can have damaging knock-on effects on the planet, fuelling stronger storms and rainfall and bleaching coral reefs.

Copernicus takes measurements using billions of satellite and weather readings, both on land and at sea, and its data extends back to 1940.

Almost three decades have passed since the tragic shooting of iconic rapper Tupac Shakur in Las Vegas, and now, the solitary individual ever charged in connection with his death is preparing to face trial.

Duane “Keffe D” Davis, aged 63, is slated to begin his trial for murder on Monday. The charge stems from the 1996 drive-by incident that claimed the life of Shakur, a titan in the world of hip-hop.

Davis maintains his innocence with a plea of not guilty. While he is not accused of pulling the trigger, prosecutors assert he played a critical role in orchestrating the attack and supplying the weapon used in the fatal shooting.

On September 7, 1996, Shakur was struck by gunfire while riding in a BMW chauffeured by Marion “Suge” Knight, the founder of Death Row Records, adjacent to the Las Vegas Strip. The rapper succumbed to his injuries six days later at the age of 25.

Hours before the shooting, Shakur, Knight and others were involved in a fight at the MGM Grand with Orlando “Baby Lane” Anderson, Davis’ nephew and a member of the South Side Compton Crips.

Prosecutors say Davis, Anderson, Deandrae “Freaky” Smith and Terry “Bubble Up” Brown were later riding in a white Cadillac that pulled alongside Shakur’s car and opened fire.

Davis is the only one of the four still alive.

Authorities long suspected Anderson was the gunman, although evidence presented in the case has also raised the possibility that Smith fired the shots.

No murder weapon was recovered.

According to the Associated Press, prosecutors hope to prove that Davis called the shots in and provided the gun used in the crime. Gunfire came from the Cadillac that Davis was in, and he’s one of the only people there that night who is still alive.

Davis has acknowledged being in the Cadillac and discussed the killing in interviews and in his 2019 memoir, “Compton Street Legend.” Prosecutors say those statements help establish his role in the attack.

His attorneys, meanwhile, have argued that some of Davis’ public statements were exaggerated and have challenged whether statements he made during a 2008 police interview could be used against him.

A Nevada judge ruled that Davis’ police interview, as well as portions of his memoir, will be allowed during the trial.

The trial is expected to last about four weeks. In November, Davis’ attorneys unsuccessfully sought to dismiss the charges.

“Think of it this way: Shakur’s murder was essentially the entertainment world’s JFK assassination — endlessly dissected, mythologized, monetized — so it’s not hard to see why someone in Davis’s position might falsely place himself at the center of it all for personal gain,” his attorneys said in a petition to the Nevada Supreme Court that was denied.

Shakur’s legendary rap career was highlighted by more than 75 million records worldwide with hits including “California Love,” “Changes” and “Dear Mama.”

Mayor Zohran Mamdani embodies both a strong ideological stance and the Machiavellian wisdom of being “a sensible man” who roots his authority in tangible control. This strategic foundation has allowed him to wield significant influence.

During his administration, Mamdani has strategically expanded his influence over vital city institutions. At times, he pushes the envelope of legal boundaries, all with the goal of establishing a lasting political machine that endures beyond his mayoralty.

Recent congressional primaries have highlighted the mayor’s firm grasp on the city’s Democratic Socialists of America chapter. This control empowers him to challenge and potentially unseat longstanding incumbents.

Despite the internal diversity among various caucuses—including those with Marxist revolutionary leanings—the DSA unites in support of Mamdani. They mobilize vast numbers of volunteers to champion his endorsed candidates and drive his political agenda forward.

Beyond public canvassing, Mamdani has integrated this grassroots energy into government operations, primarily through the establishment of the Office of Mass Engagement.

Its commissioner, Tascha Van Auken, and Mamdani’s housing czar, Cea Weaver — both DSA leaders — are actually entering buildings to organize tenants into “unions.”

And the office is using taxpayer funds to film documentaries about tenant organizing.

It’s far from apparent that tenant organizing passes muster under the Conflicts of Interest Board rules, which prohibit public servants from using city “letterhead, title, personnel, equipment, resources, supplies, or technology assets” for any “non-City purpose.”

If withholding rent becomes a common tenant-union tactic, that will only accelerate building disinvestment and deterioration.

For the mayor and the DSA, however, forcing rent-stabilized property owners into foreclosure or bankruptcy is the point.

His housing plan calls for seizing buildings from “bad actors’ hands” and transferring them to “responsible stewards” like nonprofits.

Never mind that there’s no reason to think housing controlled by nonprofits or government would produce better conditions. NYCHA’s chronic corruption and mismanagement provide ample evidence to the contrary.

For DSA lefties, the important thing is that tenant unions and the nonprofit sector can muster reliable votes.

The mayor’s appointments to various governmental bodies likewise represent power plays to exert greater direct control — even at the expense of good government.

Most glaringly, Mamdani’s appointees to the Rent Guidelines Board voted for the rent freeze he campaigned on, despite the board’s own research showing landlord costs spiked 5.3% between April 2025 and March 2026.

The city’s administrative code requires members to consider these costs and other factors in determining a rent increase that balances multiple interests; instead, Mamdani appointed his board to deliver his signature campaign promise.

A vigorous lawsuit by former Deputy Mayor Randy Mastro is challenging the RGB’s decision as arbitrary, capricious and unlawfully predetermined.

If the mayor isn’t stopped in the courts, he will obtain the de facto power to set stabilized rent increases, rendering the statutory text toothless.

Unlike with his RGB picks, Mamdani didn’t immediately bother to appoint members to the Advisory Committee on the Judiciary, the body responsible for recommending qualified picks for criminal and family court judgeships.

On his second day in office, however, he appointed his election lawyer, Ali Najmi, as head of the memberless body.

Then in April, Mamdani and Najmi rejected the nomination of Appellate Division Justice John Leventhal to the committee, raising questions about whether his Jewish identity played a role in their decision. Mamdani has denied these claims.

But Leventhal’s unprecedented rejection was even more striking because his nomination came from the state’s highest judge, Rowan Wilson, a staunch progressive but not a DSA member.

Najmi and his firm, by the way, actively practice law before the city’s various criminal courts, even though simultaneously chairing the body that screens judges creates a conflict of interest and the appearance of impropriety.

Najmi is representing the family of the victim killed in June’s Central Park horse-carriage tragedy in a suit against the city.

His influence with the mayor again creates the appearance, if not the reality, that city officials will feel pressure to offer a generous settlement. If they do, Najmi and his firm will pocket a handsome contingency fee.

More still: Last week, Mamdani abruptly disbanded the advisory board of the Mayor’s Fund to Advance New York City, the nonprofit that raises private donations to further the mayor’s top causes.

To be sure, the fund has atrophied since Mayor Michael Bloomberg left office, likely driven by a lack of faith in the city government’s ability to execute programs effectively.

But Mamdani’s axing the advisory body was needlessly antagonistic toward the city’s business leaders.

The move fits with his broader scheme: Reshaping who has power in the city means controlling who sits on such boards.

Mamdani has heeded Machiavelli’s advice well: The prince who controls everything answers to no one.

For a brief yet exhilarating moment in January 2020, Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt had the world buzzing. It seemed as though Hollywood’s most iconic breakup might just be on the verge of an unexpected revival.

This once-celebrated duo, who bid farewell to their marriage in 2005 amidst whispers that Pitt had grown closer to his co-star Angelina Jolie from “Mr. & Mrs. Smith,” hadn’t been seen together in over ten years. Their unexpected meeting at the SAG Awards rekindled more than just memories.

There was that heartfelt embrace. Those radiant smiles. And who could forget that moment when Pitt held onto Aniston’s hand as she turned to leave? It was all that fans of love stories needed to start weaving dreams of a possible reunion.

By this point, Pitt, now 62, had put his tumultuous 2016 separation from Jolie behind him, while Aniston, at 57, had also moved on from her 2018 divorce with actor Justin Theroux.

According to revelations from the Daily Mail, it turns out that not long after this reunion, the pair began discreetly rekindling their connection, steering back into each other’s lives once more.

One source said that, during their SAG reunion, ‘they both had new numbers, so they swapped and said they’d be in touch. Brad was the first one to text,’ while a second insider shared that Pitt soon started popping up on The Morning Show set at least once a week for a ‘standing lunch date’ in Aniston’s trailer.

Indeed, Aniston’s The Morning Show location proved to be something of a reunion hotspot.

Our second insider close to the Apple TV series said Pitt’s visits became a regular part of the show’s second season, giving the former husband and wife plenty of opportunities to reconnect away from prying eyes.

‘During season 2 of The Morning Show, Brad was coming to set and having lunch with Jen in her trailer. He would arrive and get dropped directly at her trailer for a private lunch just the two of them and then he would leave once filming for Jen resumed,’ the source explained.

‘Brad would come to set at least once a week. Some crew knew but had no idea who or how many. It was a standing lunch date and he stuck to it.’

And apparently, the studio lot wasn’t the only place where the former couple was catching up.

‘During this time, he was also hanging out with her at her house,’ said our first source, who also backed up those private rendezvous, adding: ‘Jen and Brad got together a number of times. Mainly at her house. They couldn’t be seen out in public together.’

There may have been no paparazzi shots to prove it, but the pair soon gave fans something almost as good: another very public appearance together.

In September 2020, Aniston and Pitt reunited for the viral Fast Times at Ridgemont High table read, where they gamely played the flirtatious Brad Hamilton and Linda Barrett – complete with a steamy dream sequence that had fans positively riveted. 

It was a charming reminder of the chemistry that once made them one of Tinseltown’s defining couples, and the idea of a second act was irresistible.

Still, our first insider quickly poured cold water on any romantic reunion, insisting their post-SAG bond stayed squarely in friend territory. 

‘A platonic relationship grew. Nothing more,’ the source said. ‘They’d gone through so much both privately and publicly that a romantic relationship would never be on the cards.’

A third insider echoed: ‘For Brad, there was no hidden agenda or expectation of rekindling their romance. More than anything, Brad missed having her as a trusted friend.

‘He was quickly reminded of just how important Jennifer had been in his life. He genuinely enjoyed reconnecting with her, spending time together away from the spotlight and just being friends, having private lunches was just really nice.

‘She was, and continues to be, one of the few people he feels he can trust completely. They still keep in touch from time to time. Getting back together with her and talking again was one of the best decisions that he has ever made.’

Of course, the pair had been the toast of Hollywood long before this latest chapter.

Their managers set them up in 1998, after Aniston’s split from actor Tate Donovan and Pitt’s broken engagement to Gwyneth Paltrow.

They kept things under wraps for the first few months before making their highly anticipated red-carpet debut at the 1999 Emmy Awards.

By November that year they were engaged, and in July 2000 they exchanged vows in front of 200 friends, family and co-stars at a lavish Malibu wedding – with Aniston even promising to always make Pitt his ‘favorite banana milk shake.’

The bride wore a silk-and-satin beaded gown by Lawrence Steele, while the wedding came complete with 50,000 flowers, four bands and a 13-minute fireworks display.

The couple were riding high, with Pitt even joining his then-wife on-screen for the first time in the season eight Friends Thanksgiving episode.

By 2002, the pair had launched their own production company, Plan B, which quickly became much more than a vanity project, with 17 films in production, including 2004’s Troy, starring Pitt.

And by February 2004, Aniston was talking openly about the couple’s hopes of starting a family, telling The Guardian: ‘It’s time. It’s time. You know, I think you can work with a baby, I think you can work pregnant, I think you can do all of it.’

Then, just months later, the picture-perfect Hollywood marriage began to unravel.

In January 2005, days after the pair were photographed ringing in the New Year together in Anguilla, they announced their separation. Aniston filed for divorce two months later, citing irreconcilable differences.

But the split was quickly swallowed up by scandalous speculation, as rumors swirled about Pitt’s relationship with Jolie.

In her first interview after the breakup, Aniston told Vanity Fair she was ‘shocked’ by the split and trying to ‘pick up the pieces.’

‘Am I lonely? Yes. Am I upset? Yes. Am I confused? Yes. Do I have my days when I’ve thrown a little pity party for myself? Absolutely. But I’m also doing really well,’ she insisted.

Aniston noted that ‘problems happen’ when a couple ‘stops growing together,’ but she did not pin the ultimate breakdown of her marriage on Jolie.

Still, the public was insatiable when it came to the love-triangle gossip, and the split quickly became a full-blown obsession.

Fans were forced to pick sides, and even popular LA boutique Kitson reported that its ‘Team Aniston’ T-shirts were outselling ‘Team Jolie’ by 25 to one.

But the drama only intensified when photographs surfaced just months after the split showing Pitt and Jolie together on a beach in Africa with Jolie’s three-year-old son, Maddox.

‘The world was shocked and I was shocked,’ Aniston later said.

Then came another headline-making moment: a W magazine spread, based on an idea from Pitt, that showed the actor and Jolie posing as a 1960s-style married couple.

The shoot left Aniston wounded – and prompted her to deliver one of the most memorable lines of the entire saga.

‘There’s a sensitivity chip that’s missing,’ she said of Pitt.

Still, despite the heartbreak, Aniston refused to publicly tear down her former husband, saying she had no interest in repeating the bitterness of her own parents’ divorce.

‘I love Brad; I really love him. I will love him for the rest of my life,’ Aniston told Vanity Fair. ‘I don’t regret any of it, and I’m not going to beat myself up about it.’

And according to our first source, those feelings eventually helped pave the way for the pair’s unlikely 2020 reconnection.

‘It literally took Jen years to forgive Brad for leaving her. However, when they bumped into each other twice in 2020 at a couple of industry events, they connected again after a long and difficult rift,’ the insider said.

‘Their split was traumatic for her and she’s all about healing and forgiving.’ 

Pitt, too, later spoke about the end of their marriage, insisting that the relationship they shared had not simply disappeared.

In 2007, he told V Magazine that he and Aniston still held a close friendship.

‘Jen and I still maintain a deep friendship and have a lot of life together that isn’t erased in any way,’ he said.

Reflecting on their breakup, he added: ‘I don’t know how better to have handled [it]. My view was, this was no one’s business in the end – at least in matters of the heart. The thing guiding me then was, you don’t know how many days you have, and you need life to be everything you need it to be.’

But several years later, Pitt was hit with backlash over comments about the marriage, which many fans interpreted as a dig at Aniston.

In a 2011 Parade interview, he said he had been chasing a movie about an ‘interesting life’ while not actually living one himself, adding that his marriage had ‘something to do with it’ because he was ‘pretending the marriage was something that it wasn’t.’

Fans immediately read that as a swipe at Aniston, prompting Pitt to issue a statement insisting his words had been misinterpreted.

He stressed that Aniston was ‘an incredibly giving, loving and hilarious woman who remains my friend’ and that their relationship was ‘an important relationship I value greatly.’

But in that same interview, Pitt was also gushing about Jolie, praising their family and calling her the woman he loved.

‘I’m satisfied with making true choices and finding the woman I love, Angie, and building a family that I love so much,’ he told the magazine. ‘A family is a risky venture, because the greater the love, the greater the loss. That’s the trade-off. But I’ll take it all.’

He added: ‘One of the greatest, smartest things I ever did was give my kids Angie as their mom. She is such a great mom. Oh, man, I’m so happy to have her.’

The pair later married at their French estate, Château Miraval, with all six children at the ceremony. They share Maddox, 25; Pax, 22; Zahara, 21; Shiloh, 20; and twins Knox and Vivienne, 18.

But by September 2016, that fairytale was shattered, after an infamous flight from France to Los Angeles allegedly descended into a vicious row.

Jolie accused Pitt of verbally and physically abusing her and some of the children, allegations he denied. Although the FBI and child welfare authorities investigated, no criminal charges were filed.

What followed was an eight-year custody and property war that dragged through the courts until the former couple finally reached a divorce settlement in December 2024.

By then, several of the children had already begun dropping Pitt from their names, signaling just how badly the family rift had frayed.

But in 2020, Pitt and Aniston were turning heads at the SAG Awards, both technically single and seemingly well past the old fallout.

That, of course, was before Pitt fell for jewelry executive Ines de Ramon, 33, with the pair sparking dating rumors in late 2022 before moving in together and making their red-carpet debut together at the Venice Film Festival in 2024. 

And, according to our first source, Pitt was candid with his old pal about his new love: ‘Brad told Jen after a few months of dating her he knew it was the real thing. Jen was happy for him.’

But the new relationship apparently changed the dynamic between the former spouses.

‘They both decided not to hang out anymore,’ the insider added.

In a significant escalation, a Ukrainian drone strike on Monday targeted the Russian city of Nizhnekamsk, resulting in the deaths of 12 individuals and injuring 39 more, regional authorities in Tatarstan confirmed.

Recently, Ukraine has intensified its focus on Russian oil installations, utilizing long-range drones in almost daily attacks. This sustained campaign is contributing to fuel shortages across Russia, hampering its refining capabilities, and stirring concern among its citizens.

President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine asserts that these measures aim to compel Russian President Vladimir Putin into negotiations to bring an end to his protracted invasion, now surpassing four years.

The drone assault on Nizhnekamsk occurred on Monday morning, described as “massive” by Rustam Minnikhanov’s press service, the head of Tatarstan. The attack targeted both industrial and civilian areas, though additional specifics were not provided.

At present, Ukrainian officials have refrained from making any public statements regarding the incident.

Nizhnekamsk is roughly 750 miles east of the Ukrainian border and has a population of about 240,000. The city is an important oil refining hub, home to two refineries and a petrochemical plant.

Ukraine’s domestically developed long-range drones have flown increasing distances deep inside Russia, with some now reaching Siberia, around 1,200 miles from the countries’ border.

“We do deliver entirely justified responses, and every Russian strike will be met with our response. Russia’s war will be felt more and more at their own home – in Russia,” Zelensky said late Sunday on social media.

“The only reason this is still continuing is Russia’s unwillingness to end this war.”

Russia has also regularly battered Ukraine from the air using missiles, powerful glide bombs and drones, hitting civilian areas and causing thousands of civilian casualties, according to the United Nations.

The World Health Organization’s European office said Monday that one of its warehouses in the central Dnipro region of Ukraine had been struck twice in less than 24 hours.

The attacks destroyed emergency supplies worth an estimated $500,000 that were intended for front-line health facilities, it said in a statement.

No casualties were reported.
