In a striking turn of events, a woman from California has admitted to the murder of her fire captain spouse, marking yet another chapter in a turbulent history involving violent crimes with previous convictions.

On Tuesday, 54-year-old Yolanda Olejniczak Marodi entered a guilty plea to second-degree murder charges regarding the tragic demise of her wife, Rebecca “Becky” Marodi. At 49, Becky was an esteemed firefighter based in California who tragically lost her life to a fatal stabbing incident at their shared residence in Ramona during February of 2025.

In the courtroom, when queried by the judge about her plea to the charge of second-degree murder, Marodi responded affirmatively with: “Guilty.”

This plea deal also included Marodi’s acknowledgment of a previous serious felony related to the 2000 stabbing death of her then-husband, James Joseph Olejniczak, highlighting a disturbing pattern in her criminal past.

She pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter in that case in 2003 before her release in 2013, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

Prosecutors said surveillance footage captured her fleeing the home as Yolanda Marodi pursued her. Rebecca was found with several injuries to her neck, chest and back that authorities said were consistent with a stabbing.

Investigators later alleged that Marodi fled to Mexico after the killing, where she remained for more than a month before being arrested in Mexicali and returned to the United States.

Marodi had initially pleaded not guilty to Rebecca’s murder before changing her plea to guilty to second-degree murder.

She is scheduled to be sentenced on Sept. 2.

Rebecca Marodi served more than 30 years with Cal Fire, mainly in Riverside County, starting as a volunteer in Moreno Valley. Most recently, officials confirmed she helped battle the Eaton Fire.

CAL Fire Riverside acknowledged Rebecca Marodi’s death and said it is a “profound loss.”

“Her legacy of mentorship, service, and dedication will be felt for years to come. Her passing is a profound loss to her family, friends, and all who had the privilege of working alongside her,” the department wrote in a previous statement on their Facebook page.

Nearly 50% of parents in the United States reach for melatonin to help their children drift off to sleep. But is this popular sleep aid potentially disrupting rather than fostering rest?

Emerging research points out a concerning possibility that melatonin, trailing only multivitamins in popularity among children’s supplements, might be cutting short the crucial sleep phase vital for memory, learning, and emotional growth.

In the past two decades, the use of melatonin has surged dramatically. While it’s often marketed as a natural remedy for getting kids to sleep, there are increasing worries about its prolonged use and potential side effects, including nightmares.

A major issue with melatonin is its status as a supplement, meaning it doesn’t undergo FDA evaluation for safety or effectiveness. This has led to inconsistencies in dosages, with actual amounts ranging from 74% to nearly 3.5 times what the label claims.

“Melatonin is a hormone that our bodies naturally produce,” explained Dr. Daniel Bigman, a child and adolescent psychiatry expert at Northwell’s Zucker Hillside Hospital and Cohen Children’s Medical Center. “So, introducing anything into a child’s system that could alter hormonal balance might trigger a domino effect on various bodily functions.”

How melatonin might affect kids’ REM sleep

The new study looked at how 684 children slept with a polysomnogram, which looks at different stages of sleep.

“It looks at if our sleep is interrupted, how we breathe, and so forth,” Bigman said. “This study looked at the difference between children taking melatonin and those who do not.”

Researchers found that children who took melatonin had less rapid eye movement sleep, aka REM sleep, overall compared to kids who didn’t take the supplement.

“REM sleep is also thought of as the dream stage, or the dream sleep, because this is where most of us will experience dreams,” Bigman said.

More importantly, there’s evidence that this stage of sleep is crucial for memory, learning, and emotional development. Research indicates drugs like antidepressants and ADHD medication that affect REM sleep could hurt young brains’ development for this reason.

“While it’s hard to understand exactly the reason why, or if the melatonin was even the primary cause, I think what’s more important is that that there potentially is a relationship.”

Using melatonin

Melatonin is sometimes recommended for kids struggling with sleep — but Bigman notes “there should be caution because we don’t know everything about its effects.”

With limited FDA involvement in regulation of supplements like melatonin, “it is hard for us to know to quantify what it is that’s happening … as well as its long-term effects, because there isn’t robust data to truly understand how melatonin affects children’s brains, specifically in sleep.”

There’s also the question of whether kids getting melatonin actually need the pill or gummy. Things like iron deficiency, enlarged tonsils, and even nightmares could be keeping the child from a good nights rest. And melatonin won’t necessarily fix the problem.

Bigman says he’ll only recommend melatonin in the event a child is diagnosed to have a circadian rhythm or sleep-wake cycle disorder. This is when they’re staying awake long into the night and sleeping during the day.

“When we do prescribe melatonin, the doses are very small or where the times given are very strategically done. For example, sometimes we dose melatonin four, five, or six hours before the time we want them to sleep at a very, very low dose,” he explains.

“Giving a large amount of melatonin may not be beneficial just because we want someone or a child to sleep.”

Instead, the first line of defense should be sleep hygiene. That’s a consistent bedtime with a good routine that signals the body it’s time to wind down — like a bath or relaxing without a device. Screens should be put away 30 minutes to an hour before bed.

And kids should also have a sleep-friendly space to get some shut eye: somewhere quiet and dark. Bigman also suggests looking at physical activity, sugar, and junk food intake.

“All these things could potentially contribute to difficulty with sleep,” he said. Parents should shoot for their kids to get eight to 10 hours of sleep a night.

Tragedy struck when a father of five lost his life in a collision with a stolen vehicle driven by a 13-year-old boy, with six other teenagers packed inside, authorities report.

The fatal accident unfolded in the early morning hours, just after 5 a.m. on Tuesday, at a busy intersection located in Germantown, Maryland. This suburban area lies just a short distance north of the nation’s capital, Washington, DC.

The victim, identified as 58-year-old William Vance Payne II, was en route to his job at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). A dedicated mechanical engineer, Payne was approaching retirement, according to statements from his grieving family.

A mere 10 minutes from his destination, Payne’s Toyota Matrix met with disaster. It was violently struck by a stolen white Kia Optima crammed with seven youths. Occupants included four young girls aged 14, 14, 13, and 12, alongside three boys whose ages were 15, 13, and 12, as outlined by the Montgomery County Police Department.

Responding swiftly to the 5:25 a.m. call, emergency crews arrived to find Payne deceased amid the wreckage. Both vehicles bore the scars of ‘extensive damage,’ police confirmed.

The juveniles, whose identities were not disclosed, were transported to several trauma centers in the area. The 13-year-old driver of the Kia was in critical but stable condition, police said. 

Footage of the crash scene taken by NBC Washington shows Payne’s Toyota with severe damage to its broadsides and the white Kia flipped upside down. 

No arrests were made immediately after the crash. The Montgomery County Department of Police Collision Reconstruction Unit’s investigation into the collision may take several weeks to months to complete, police said. 

Charges in the case will be determined by the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office after it is presented with evidence.

A witness had gone to a police station in person to report that a vehicle was driving erratically in the area, but by the time they told police, the crash had already occurred, NBC Washington reported. 

The Kia with the seven teenagers inside was reported stolen a few hours after the crash.

Montgomery County Police Officer Shiera Goff told NBC Washington that several of the juveniles in the stolen car were not wearing their seatbelts, and some were sitting on each other’s laps. 

‘At this age, they’re not supposed to be driving. You do not have a license at the age of 15. Right now, I would say, parents, just make sure you know where your children are,’ Goff told the outlet. 

Payne had worked for NIST for 29 years, most recently as a mechanical engineer in the Equipment Performance Group of the Building Energy and Environment Division of the Engineering Laboratory, according to his profile on the NIST website. 

His work focused on making residential heat pumps and air conditioning units more efficient and reliable.  

‘Our thoughts are with Vance’s family, friends and colleagues during this difficult time,’ a statement NIST shared with NBC Washington said in part. 

Payne leaves behind his wife, Lisa, and five children, including two adult daughters, two young daughters and a young son, according to a GoFundMe organized to support his family.  

The mechanical engineer was described as a ‘loving, funny, patient, and dedicated family man’ on the fundraiser page. 

Thefts of certain 2010 to 2021 Kia models have surged in recent years after a TikTok trend exposing the ease with which they could be stolen due to a critical design flaw went viral around 2022. 

Insurance companies in 2023 received over ten times more Kia and Hyundai theft claims than the three previous years after social media videos showed the cars being stolen and driven haphazardly by joyriders as young as 12.

In May 2023, Kia and Hyundai agreed to settle a class-action lawsuit worth around $200 million over the rampant car thefts.

Although the settlement brought free hardware retrofits to owners in an attempt to reduce the carjackings, police still encourage physical steering wheel locks and software updates as the problem continues to persist in 2026. 

Earlier this year, a middle school student from Florida found himself arrested and facing adult charges. Authorities stated this week that Julian Davis, just 14 years old, allegedly crafted his own firearms and explosives at home. His intent, according to law enforcement, was to use these creations for a robbery.

The investigation into Davis and his 13-year-old accomplice was launched on April 27. Deputies from St. Johns County Sheriff’s Department received an unsettling tip: the boys had been corresponding on Telegram, planning to hold someone at gunpoint for a robbery, as detailed in an arrest report.

Texts exchanged between the two young teens, both students at Switzerland Point Middle School, reportedly included plans for constructing a shotgun and a musket. They also mentioned acquiring zip ties, according to the arrest details.

For the first time, Sheriff Robert Hardwick and federal investigators spoke publicly about the case at a Friday press conference. They explained that charging Davis, a young boy reportedly fascinated by school shooters, may have averted a potential “tragedy” within the school and the community at large.

Davis was arrested on April 30 and charged as an adult with multiple firearms and explosives offenses. Davis and his 13-year-old friend were both charged with conspiracy to commit a robbery with a firearm. The younger boy was not charged as an adult and is therefore not being identified by News Media.

Between April 27 and 30, sheriff’s deputies and federal agents conducted multiple searches of Davis’ home, finding three homemade firearms, ammunition, suspected explosive components and makeshift handcuffs.

Also found in Davis’ home were handwritten notes depicting the construction of weapons and an apparent drawing of what appeared to be a Molotov cocktail, according to photos released by the sheriff’s department.

Searches also revealed a tactical vest with “White supremacy drawings” and a copy of the manifesto of Brenton Tarrant, a White supremacist who in 2019 went on shooting sprees at two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand, killing 51 people.

Other items of concern found by authorities in Davis’ home included a U.S. Army improvised munitions handbook and a copy of “The Anarchist Cookbook,” a 1971 book that contains instructions on how to make explosives, weapons and illicit drugs.

Hardwick said Davis and his friend had planned to rob someone named CJ, though investigators have been unable to determine who CJ is.

Based on this evidence, plus online searches by Davis, Hardwick said there was a “much bigger picture than just a robbery of that individual.”

“Davis was using his devices in his home to research things. He had a [fixation] with people that had committed these mass school shootings, people that have gone in and done these mass stabbings,” Sheriff Hardwick said. “So, he was actually spending a lot of his time on there going through these high-profile cases. And it’s something that he actually wanted to emulate.”

Davis is still in custody at the St. Johns County Jail on a $240,000 bond, the sheriff said. He pleaded not guilty to the charges against him and is scheduled to be arraigned again next month after additional charges were filed.

News Media reached out to Davis’ attorney for comment.

Davis’ friend, with whom he was texting about the alleged robbery, spent 21 days in the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice before being released, the sheriff said.

Neither of the boys will be allowed to return to their school. St. Johns County School District Deputy Superintendent Paul Abbatinozzi clarified that there was never a direct threat to Switzerland Point Middle School.

The tip about the boys’ alleged activities was initially submitted to the school through FortifyFL, a platform created after the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting designed to identify potential threats from suspicious students.

Keith Urban is apparently singing a new tune regarding Nicole Kidman’s speculated blossoming relationship.

Contrary to last week’s reports that painted the country music sensation as “absolutely devastated” by his ex-wife’s interactions with private equity mogul Michael Reinstein, fresh insights suggest Urban is actually “relieved” by her moving on.

The renowned “Blue Ain’t Your Color” artist, now 58, was reportedly the initiator in ending his nearly two-decade-long union with Kidman. As revealed by the Daily Mail, Urban had been battling feelings of guilt over causing pain to the Oscar-winning actress.

An insider disclosed to the publication, “Keith was the one who wanted out of the marriage, and he felt guilty about hurting Nicole.”

Nevertheless, witnessing Kidman, aged 59, apparently finding joy with a new partner is said to have noticeably eased Urban’s burden.

The source claimed Urban is “relieved that she’s moved on” and that there is “no jealousy” over Reinstein.
