TUCSON, Ariz. — In a recent development, a neighbor of Nancy Guthrie reported seeing FBI agents searching the brush behind the home of the missing 84-year-old. This sighting comes just as the case is about to hit its six-month anniversary without resolution.

Despite statements from a spokesperson for the Pima County Sheriff’s Department denying any recent investigative activities by the task force in the area, the neighbor insists on recognizing agents from previous law enforcement operations linked to this case. As of now, the FBI has not provided any comments regarding their reported presence.

Residing merely a few houses away, the neighbor observed the officials methodically searching through the rugged desert terrain.

Authorities believe that Nancy Guthrie, mother of “Today” co-host Savannah Guthrie, was forcibly taken from her home during the early morning hours of February 1.

Bob Krygier, a retired Pima County Sheriff’s Department lieutenant and former SWAT commander, said there are a few reasons why investigators would return to the area, ranging from new leads to the chance that evidence has been shifted around by recent weather.

“There’s a couple of different reasons that go through my mind first is going to be they got some leads, they got some new tips that are viable, and they’re out there looking for something specific or in an area specific to that, because I’m certain that they’ve searched those areas already,” he told News Media.

It could also be that, six months into the investigation, authorities are putting a fresh set of eyes on the case, he said.

And heavy rains may also have altered the landscape, potentially exposing or moving evidence investigators hadn’t previously seen, he said.

“About a month ago, monsoon season started here in Tucson and a lot of water has come down — a lot of water at once, and it pushes things,” he said. “So it’s moved the environment. Rocks have been pushed away.”

Depending on the area, floodwaters can rise from just a few inches to as much as 12 feet, Krygier said, with enough force to sweep away vehicles, trees, rocks and even people.

“I’m not sure if they found him yet, but there was a report of a man in the wash floating down, being pushed downstream by the water — and the Santa Cruz is what that feeds into, which is, you’re looking at 20, 30 feet deep when it’s at its peak and 50, 60 feet across,” he said. “All that water, it’s rushing fast, and it’s taken not only the people, but it’s taken cars, it’s taken trees, branches, rocks, all of this stuff, and basically turned into a big blender.”

Authorities did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos told News Media last week that investigators are still following up on active leads, reviewing “tens of thousands” of videos and do not consider the case cold.

On Friday, his office also released a pair of purported ransom notes in the case, in the hope that someone in the public can help identify the sender’s “unique linguistic style.”

The combined sum of rewards in the case is over $1.2 million and remains unclaimed.

A man taken into custody for allegedly igniting the colossal Gann Fire in Calaveras County claims that his intentions were noble. He reportedly was seeking to earn some cash for a special birthday dinner for his wife when the incident spiraled out of control.

Herbert Wayne Smith, a 65-year-old resident of Spring Valleys, recounted using a saw to cut through metal scraps. His plan was to sell these scraps to fund the birthday celebration planned for Monday. Unfortunately, this endeavor inadvertently sparked a wildfire that ravaged more than 10,000 acres.

Lamenting over the unintended consequences, Smith shared his distress in an interview with KCRA. “This is going to destroy my life, one way or another,” he confessed, acknowledging the gravity of his actions.

“I’m so sorry for everything that’s happened. That was never my intent. I was just out there trying to get some money together, and it turned into this,” Smith explained, his remorse evident.

Officials have charged Smith with negligent operation of the equipment. He failed to clear the surrounding flammable vegetation and did not have appropriate firefighting tools at the ready, a critical oversight given the dry conditions of the area.

“The investigation revealed Smith was operating equipment capable of producing sparks in vegetation without complying with the fire prevention requirements of California Public Resources Code,” Cal Fire said in a statement following Smith’s arrest.

As of Wednesday afternoon, criminal charges against Smith had not yet been filed in Calaveras Superior Court. Cal Fire submitted its investigation to the Calaveras District Attorney’s Office for review and potential prosecution.

The fire led to both evacuation orders and warnings in the area, with homes and property threatened by the growing blaze. The aggressive fire surged over days as triple-digit temperatures and critically dry fuels hampered firefighting efforts across the parched landscape.

While grueling conditions persist, Cal Fire reported a steady rise in containment, though officials warn that crews remain on high alert with the heatwave slated to last through the weekend.

In the affluent suburbs just outside Boston, Massachusetts, a masked prowler has been spotted on surveillance footage, causing concern among residents.

Captured by security cameras, the individual dressed in a bicycle helmet was seen wandering the grounds of a Weston home between 2:30 and 3:30 a.m. on Sunday, August 2. Now, the Weston Police Department is calling on the community to assist in getting to the bottom of this “suspicious incident.”

Authorities have confirmed that the person did not enter the residence, but their presence on private property during the late hours raises alarms.

“Considering the situation, we suspect the individual’s intentions were likely not lawful,” the police stated.

Known for its ultra-premium real estate market and proximity to Boston, Weston, Massachusetts, stands as one of the most exclusive and expensive towns in the state. Police say the figure appeared to come from a nearby trail and approached the Highland Street house with a flashlight.

In one of the images shared by the department, the person appears to be shining a flashlight at the home’s three-car garage.

In another instance, investigators say it looks like the suspicious man is carrying a hunting chair he picked up from the house to the woods. Another image showed him wearing a bicycle helmet.

Weston Police Chief Denis Linehan called the scene deeply concerning, telling CBS Boston, “It’s creepy, there is no doubt about it.”

“Anytime you have someone on somebody else’s property masked, I don’t care what time of day it is, that is concerning, and then you add the factor that it is three in the morning, and he was on that property for an extended period of time, we’re overly concerned.”

The suspicious behavior is causing authorities to ask nearby residents to check their home surveillance or doorbell camera footage from those early morning hours.

“Even footage showing someone walking, riding a bicycle, or leaving the area could be helpful to our investigation,” they said.

Minnie Driver recently experienced a harrowing car accident while traveling in France, an incident she described as “really bad.”

On Thursday, the “Emily in Paris” actress took to Instagram to share the unsettling news with her followers. Wearing a neck brace, she expressed her gratitude for surviving the ordeal, saying she is “grateful to be alive.”

At 56, Driver recounted the frightening crash, recounting the details of how it unfolded. “I got into a really bad car accident a few days ago with my friend Ben,” she explained. “We somehow managed to walk away from it. Well, we didn’t exactly walk — we crawled out. But the important part is, we survived.”

Driver was clear in stating that the T-bone accident, which occurred on an “old country road,” was not a result of her actions.

According to Driver, “A car failed to stop at an intersection and was speeding, leading us to T-bone it,” she remarked. “Thankfully, I’m okay, though I have a sprained neck.”

“I’m really in a sort of shock and cry all the time but I’m gonna heal,” she continued. “The reason that I’m not dead honestly is the car that we were driving.”

She gave an emotional shoutout to the “little tiny Kia” with its 360-degree airbags, saying, “The fact that the entire car didn’t just crush us is down to the design of that car which is frankly astonishing.”

Calling herself “Minnie Driver, pun intended,” the Emmy nominee gushed, “I need to celebrate the car that saved us because we’ve got families and people who love us. … So, Kia, you are a baller car company. You’re amazing. And thanks very much.”

In her caption, Driver raved over “the van driver who stopped and helped … before ambulances arrived.”

She also made “special mention of the car who slowed down took in the scene and drove off without stopping.”

The “Borderline” star concluded, “I guess this is the Dao of the world, the light and the dark. My brain keeps replaying the crash which is very hard but seems to be a necessary part of processing. Weeping too, feels good and helpful.”

Driver’s loved ones shared their support in the comments section, wishing her a “speedy recovery.”

The “Speechless” alum has been documenting her Paris trip on social media all summer long.

“Eat a crêpe, go for a walk,” she captioned an Instagram video of herself eating a pastry full of “lemon and sugar, as God intended.”

A former doctor, who allegedly assaulted multiple women on luxury yachts in Rhode Island, has finally been captured after more than two decades in hiding, all due to one careless blunder.

Last month, Ronald Fischer was tracked down in New York, living under a false identity, after his new employment revealed his photo online.

Fischer, now 70, vanished in 2005 before his trial concluded for an assault on Cheryl Gingerich, a college professor and mother of four, which occurred two years before.

In an ironic turn of events, investigators suggest Fischer’s audacious move to revive his medical career became his downfall. He secured a high-profile position with a pharmaceutical company, inadvertently drawing attention to himself.

A photo of the former anesthesiologist was posted online by Immix Biopharma to announce his new role, which led someone to tip off the FBI, culminating in his arrest.

The agency alerted local law enforcement and officers intercepted Fischer aboard his $1.4 million custom-built boat, the Silver Lining, in New Jersey, under the guise of a routine stop by the Coast Guard. 

At the time, he was living under the identity of Richard Graydon, a self-styled master sailor at the Liberty Yacht Club.

Investigators who searched his East Greenwich home later found a trove of documents and plans for switching identities and evading capture.

Fischer is accused of luring Gingerich aboard his sailboat, the Lion King, under the pretense of asking her to help him clean it during a date before he pushed her onto a bed and raped her, according to court testimony reviewed by the Boston Globe.

The former anesthesiologist was awaiting the verdict when he fled, telling his daughters he was leaving the country. He was ultimately found guilty in absentia but never sentenced as he could not be found.

Now aged 70, Fischer appeared in court last week without an attorney, where a judge entered a not guilty plea on his behalf regarding a bail-jumping charge, the Boston Globe reports.

He was remanded in custody after being deemed a flight risk. 

‘I was happy to think when I woke up, I thought, I slept last night in my bed and Ronald Fischer slept last night in a jail,’ Gingerich told NBC 10. ‘That made me, I’m sorry to say it, but truthfully it made me happy.’

Elden DaSilva, supervisory deputy US marshal for the District of Rhode Island, told the Globe: ‘People return to their passions and their behaviors when they feel it’s safe to do so and that’s what he did.’

Fischer’s capture ended two decades as a fugitive. His fall from grace began back in 1994, when Fischer was accused of a separate rape of a woman aboard another boat called the Dreammaker.

The 25-year-old alleged victim told the police she had met Fischer for a date aboard the vessel in Quincy Bay, which quickly spiraled when she refused to have sex with him, court records show.

The woman claimed Fischer choked her into submission before pulling her jeans off and raping her. 

She told investigators that he eventually allowed her to go above deck after she promised she would not fight back anymore and she took her opportunity to escape. The alleged victim then ran naked to a nearby boat where the occupants dialed 911, according to court testimony.

Fischer ultimately saw the charges downgraded and pleaded guilty to assault and battery at his trial in 1996, after the woman declined to testify. He did not end up serving any jail time.

Several years later, another woman claimed she was raped by a man going by the name ‘Kevin’ aboard his boat, the Lion King, following a date at a marina bar in Newport, Rhode Island.

The alleged victim told the Boston Globe she now recognizes the man from the assault as Fischer, using an alias. 

However, it was not until 2003, when Fischer was accused of raping Gingerich, that he wound up in court.

Fearing the outcome of the trial, Fischer packed up his things and fled his old life. He was found guilty of the attack in absentia after failing to turn up to his trial in Newport.

He had his medical license revoked in Rhode Island and Massachusetts. 

Investigators searching for Fischer noted that he had purchased a flight to London before his disappearance, which he then canceled. His ex-wife also told the authorities that Fischer had friends in Brazil. 

However, in the years between his conviction and his arrest last month, Fischer had taken up a new identity as Richard Graydon, at one point living in New York City. 

Following a stint with a failed weight-loss company, Fischer fabricated his resume to convince prospective employers he was a board-certified hematologist-oncologist, which enabled him to secure a lucrative career in the biotech industry, the Boston Globe reports.

He became a member of the volunteer-run Liberty Yacht Club where he entered races and was pictured at various social events.

This included a gala in April of this year, where Fischer was snapped beaming at the camera.

But despite his impunity, cracks were beginning to show in Fischer’s facade. 

Members of his crew have since told the Boston Globe that he was known for having an explosive temper and could often be heard shouting at his team so aggressively it was audible from nearby vessels.

Paul Elkouss, a crew member aboard the Silver Lining in 2024 and 2025, told the outlet that Fischer’s temper and poor management ultimately hindered any of his delusions of being a successful yachtsman.

Fischer’s web of lies finally collapsed after he stepped into the role of chief medical officer with the Los Angeles pharmaceutical company. 

In a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission seen by the Daily Mail, Immix said: ‘Richard Graydon has been terminated and is no longer with the company for reasons unrelated to his activities at the company. 

‘Given his short tenure, management believes there is no material effect on the business.’
