Breakthrough Discovery Reveals Potential Cause of Excessive Sweating Condition

0

A groundbreaking discovery has shed light on a potential cause of a chronic condition characterized by uncontrollable, excessive sweating, potentially opening doors to more effective treatments.

Known as hyperhidrosis, this condition triggers profuse sweating without common stimuli like high temperatures or physical exertion.

Individuals afflicted often experience overwhelming perspiration that soaks through clothing or drips from their hands, interfering with daily activities and necessitating frequent wardrobe changes.

For a long time, hyperhidrosis was primarily considered a dysfunction of the sweat glands themselves.

However, researchers at Johns Hopkins University have recently discovered that a genetic mutation affecting nerve control over sweat glands might be the true culprit.

Dr Malcom Brock, a surgeon who led the research, said: ‘Our findings show that, for some patients, the problem actually begins in the nerves that control sweating.

‘This biological explanation for the condition offers a potential pathway to more effective treatments.’

Primary idiopathic hyperhidrosis occurs when the body produces significantly more sweat than is necessary for temperature regulation (stock)

Primary idiopathic hyperhidrosis occurs when the body produces significantly more sweat than is necessary for temperature regulation (stock)

In the study, published in Science Advances, researchers collected DNA from families with inherited hyperhidrosis and compared their data.

They found that one fifth of sufferers had a mutation on the SCN10A gene for sodium channel NaV1.8, found in nerves that control the activity of sweat glands.

In the second half of the study, scientists then engineered mice to carry the mutation, and the test subjects developed excessive sweating – just like in humans. This showed a direct correlation between the genetic mutation and the condition.

Additional studies revealed that the NaV1.8 channel affects sympathetic nerve cells that control sweating, making those cells more active and causing the body to produce too much sweat.

‘We found that this mutation essentially turns up the volume on the nerve signals that stimulate sweating,’ Brock said. ‘That insight gives us a specific target to pursue for future therapies.’

Hyperhidrosis affects an estimated 15.3 million Americans and often runs in families. It is most common in adults between the ages of 18 and 39.

Risk factors include having a close relative with the condition, taking medications that increase sweating, or having an underlying medical condition linked to excessive perspiration.

To diagnose hyperhidrosis, healthcare providers may order blood or other laboratory tests to rule out underlying causes, or perform a sweat test to pinpoint where sweating occurs and assess its severity.

Typical treatment for hyperhidrosis begins with prescription-strength antiperspirant, but depending on the condition’s severity, it can evolve into stronger medications including oral pills, botulinum toxin injections, and device therapy.

These findings open up a new door for treating the condition, as one expert told the Daily Mail current treatments for hyperhidrosis are designed to control the excessive sweating once it is present.

‘While these treatments can be quite successful at addressing the symptom of excessive sweating, this approach does not address the biological mechanism as to why some individuals develop hyperhidrosis,’ Dr Paul Gross, primary care physician and medical doctor at LIV3 Health, told Daily Mail.

‘By developing an understanding of how to treat hyperhidrosis closer to its origin, researchers will be able to direct future therapies toward correcting the abnormal nerve pathways identified by this research,’ he added.

‘Although these treatments provide relief from the symptoms experienced by most patients, they do not treat the cause,’ Dr Gross said. ‘Therefore, many people experience the need to have additional treatments throughout their lives.’

The expert added that this groundbreaking study could eventually lead to a new generation of treatments, targeted at the overactive nerves.

‘While there is much work to be done before these treatments are available, this study represents an important first step toward providing treatment options that are more accurate and long-term,’ he said.

National Guard Announces $292M Housing Strategy for DC Troops

(The Hill) — In a significant announcement on Thursday, the National Guard unveiled a $292 million initiative to establish “up to 2,000 apartment-style lodging units” for its members in Washington D.C. This endeavor underscores the commitment to providing sustainable accommodations for personnel stationed in the nation’s capital.

The lucrative housing contract has been awarded to Placemakr, a prominent corporate lodging firm, marking the largest collaboration of its kind within the National Guard’s history. Placemakr has previously collaborated with Hilton on an extensive apartment project in Phoenix, Arizona, showcasing its expertise in developing vast lodging solutions.

Despite the ambitious nature of the plan, local activist groups have expressed concerns. They criticize the project for not specifying an end date for the deployment, leaving many questions about its longevity unanswered.

According to a National Guard official who spoke with The Hill in July, there are plans to maintain a National Guard presence in the city until at least Inauguration Day 2029. However, this proposal is still pending approval from Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and remains subject to change at the discretion of the president.

Hegseth has previously expressed his support for the ongoing deployment, acknowledging the dedication and service of National Guard members during a July address. His appreciation underscores the importance of their continued presence in the capital.

The contract supports requirements outlined in Executive Order 14252 which created the D.C. Safe and Beautiful Task Force. The guard members have been deployed for around 11 months in an effort by President Trump and other officials to lower crime and “beautify” the nation’s capital.

“You’ve [guard members] done over 530 medical assistances to personnel, you restored children back to their families 27 times, and you have done amazing things in support of law enforcement to make sure we reduce crime,” the National Guard wrote.

After nearly a year, about 5,150 National Guard troops are still in the nation’s capital, comprising 599 D.C. National Guard and 4,403 troops from 21 states, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

The contract for housing these troops was completed in 85 days, which the agency claims is faster than other comparable contract timelines. It also reported that the accelerated timeline received some agency-level vendor protest.

The new housing project adds onto what the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office estimated cost of deployment at $3 million daily. With Sens. Gary Peters (D‑Mich.) and Andy Kim (D‑N.J.) reporting in February that the cost of deployment for taxpayers is nearly $1.65 million.

This lodging deal, the National Guard claims, is nearly 50 percent cheaper than the projected costs from paying for commercial hotels.

Cornbelt Fire Department Steps Up to Meet Rising Demand for Emergency Services

MAHOMET, Ill. (WCIA) — If you’ve been hearing more sirens in Mahomet lately, you’re not alone. The Cornbelt Fire Protection District has been hustling, with almost 50 calls for service flooding in just last week—a figure that’s rapidly becoming the status quo.

Fire Chief John Koller shared insights with WCIA, detailing how the station is evolving under the pressure of this increased demand. The blaring of sirens is becoming a familiar sound at Cornbelt Fire, reflecting a surge in emergency calls that the team has been tackling headlong.

“In the last decade, we’ve observed a staggering 70% surge in calls, which is quite significant,” Chief Koller remarked, highlighting the remarkable rise in demand for their services.

Reflecting on last week’s near-50 calls, Chief Koller, who has been leading the charge for almost 11 years, noted that back when he started, medical emergencies comprised roughly 80% of their total calls. The landscape, however, has shifted dramatically.

“What we see now is a 60/40% split,” he said. “So, 60% in the medical type calls and 40% of all the other types of calls.”

As Mahomet’s population grows, Chief Koller said more calls were expected, and plans were put in place years ago to handle them.

“We did about an eight-year plan,” he said.

That plan includes a full-time ambulance service and an engine company at the station.

“We have a tremendously quicker response time than we used to have, we’ve cut it in half,” Chief Koller said.

Patrick Brown, the Mahomet Village Administrator, said the changes had the village’s best interest in mind.

“With John’s leadership at Cornbelt, you’ve seen a big change in planning for the future,” Brown said.

More than half of Cornbelt’s staff is volunteers.

“Cornbelt was based on and built on volunteers and they’re the backbone of our department and still are to this day,” Chief Koller said.

He said the fire station gets at least new five volunteers a year. Volunteers, along with their board helping to make staffing decisions, are helping the team be better prepared to respond to a higher volume of calls.

“I’m just so proud of everything that everybody does,” Chief Koller said. “I say every day that it takes a lot to keep the big red trucks rolling down the road.”

He said the station is willing to hire more staff if the need arises.

49ers Coach Kyle Shanahan Injured in Car Crash, Faces Limited Role as Training Camp Starts

0

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — In a surprising turn of events, Kyle Shanahan, head coach of the San Francisco 49ers, was involved in a car accident earlier this month. The team officially revealed on Saturday, the day training camp commenced, that his ability to participate at the onset of the camp will be limited due to this incident.

According to a source knowledgeable about the situation, who preferred to remain anonymous, Shanahan endured a concussion, a fractured nose, several broken ribs, and injuries to his hands. This disclosure was shared with The Associated Press.

While the team chose to label the injuries as “non-life-threatening,” they also extended their gratitude to the first responders who acted promptly at the crash site last week.

As the 49ers gear up for their initial practice session on Sunday, assistant head coach and offensive line coach Chris Foerster will take the reins. He will be supported by coordinators Klay Kubiak, Raheem Morris, and Brant Boyer to manage the team’s activities.

Shanahan, now stepping into his 10th season as the 49ers’ coach, is widely respected for his offensive expertise. His leadership has steered San Francisco to two Super Bowl appearances after the 2019 and 2023 seasons, as well as two NFC Championship game showings in the 2021 and 2022 seasons, cementing his status as an influential figure in the league.

Shanahan has a 91-72 record in the regular season and playoffs for the 49ers, ranking third in franchise history in wins behind George Seifert (108) and Bill Walsh (102).

The team overcame significant injuries last season to finish 12-5 in the regular season and win a playoff game as Shanahan finished fifth in voting for the AP NFL Coach of the Year.

Revitalize Grip Strength After 65: 4 Daily Exercises Proven More Effective Than Hand Grippers

0

Struggling to open jar lids after turning 65? These four daily exercises can help enhance your grip strength.

>

For many seniors, the frustration of an unyielding jar lid or the discomfort of constantly switching hands with a heavy shopping bag often signals a decline in grip strength. As a trainer with TRAINFITNESS, renowned as the UK’s leading fitness education authority, I’ve observed a recurring issue among clients over the age of 65: considerable weakness across their entire hand.

The thumb tends to be the first to suffer. The power to pinch between your thumb and fingertips is crucial for holding utensils, phones, or turning doorknobs. As this strength wanes, everyday activities become cumbersome. While arthritis typically takes the blame, it’s often the result of underuse rather than disease.

An unnoticed imbalance also develops — the muscles responsible for closing the hand become more dominant than those that open it. This is largely because everyday activities continuously engage the hand in gripping motions, rarely requiring the opposite action. Over time, this results in a hand that feels increasingly stiff and less dexterous. Modern conveniences that replace physical effort, like twisting jar lids less frequently and button-pressing appliances, reduce grip challenges. This change has a tangible impact, with strength potentially dropping to half of what it was at age 40.

While hand grippers focus solely on enhancing the crushing motion, hands need to develop four essential skills: crushing, pinching, twisting, and holding. A regular gripper leaves significant gaps in a comprehensive grip workout. The four exercises below, utilizing items you likely already own, can thoroughly address each aspect of grip strength in just eight minutes daily.

5 Morning Exercises That Restore Arm Strength Faster Than Weight Training After 60

Rolled Hand Towel Squeeze

This trains the crush grip, the most familiar pattern of the hand, using an object that gives you feedback about how hard you’re squeezing. A towel compresses under your fingers in a way a metal gripper doesn’t, which trains the small muscles of your palm and fingers to work together.

How to Do It:

  • Roll a hand towel into a tight cylinder about the thickness of a broom handle
  • Hold it in one hand at chest height
  • Squeeze as hard as you can for 3 seconds
  • Slowly release over 2 seconds

Avoid These Mistakes:

  • Don’t tense your whole arm and shoulder to make the squeeze feel harder. Keep the work in your hand and forearm, and relax your shoulder if it starts rising toward your ear.

Sets and Reps: 12 squeezes per hand, 2 rounds per side.

Fingertip Fan and Grip

This trains the extensor muscles, the ones that open the hand, which hand grippers never touch. Balanced strength between the crushers and the extensors is what keeps your hand feeling loose rather than stiff, and it’s what protects against the cramped, claw-like grip a lot of people develop after 65.

How to Do It:

  • Rest your hand on a table, palm down, fingers relaxed
  • Slowly spread all five fingers as wide apart as they will go
  • Hold the spread for 3 seconds
  • Squeeze the fingers back together into a soft fist
  • Hold the fist for 3 seconds

Avoid These Mistakes:

  • Don’t skip the spread and only do the closing motion. The spread is the whole point of this exercise, since it’s the direction your hand almost never moves in daily life. If it feels weak at first, that’s proof you need it.

Sets and Reps: 10 slow reps per hand.

4 Chair Exercises That Strengthen Your Hips Better Than Gym Machines After 60

Jar Lid Turn Practice

This trains the rotational strength of your forearm, which is what opens jam jars, turns taps, and unscrews bottle caps. Rotation is one of the four grip patterns and it’s the one that most obviously fades after 65. This exercise loads it directly, using an object every kitchen already has.

How to Do It:

  • Find an empty jar with a screw-on lid that gives some resistance
  • Hold the jar body firmly with one hand
  • Grip the lid with the other hand and slowly turn it as if opening, taking 3 seconds for a full quarter-turn
  • Reverse and close it, taking 3 seconds

Avoid These Mistakes:

  • Don’t yank the lid to break the rotation and then coast. The value is in the slow, controlled turn from start to finish. If a jar is so tight you have to yank it, use a looser one.

Sets and Reps: 8 opens and 8 closes per side, progressing to a stiffer jar as strength builds.

Water Bottle Wrist Curl

This trains the wrist and forearm together, building the sustained-hold strength that lets you carry a full kettle, a shopping bag, or a watering can without your hand giving up before your arm does. The wrist is often the missing link that limits how long your grip can hold.

How to Do It:

  • Sit in a chair with a 500ml water bottle in one hand
  • Rest your forearm on your thigh, palm facing up, so your wrist hangs over your knee
  • Slowly curl your wrist upward, lifting the bottle
  • Lower slowly over 2 seconds until your wrist is fully dropped
  • Turn your hand palm down and repeat, this time lifting the back of your hand

Avoid These Mistakes:

  • Don’t use a bottle so heavy that your elbow lifts off your thigh to help. The value is in isolating the wrist. Start light and add water to the bottle as you get stronger.

Sets and Reps: 12 reps palm up, 12 reps palm down, then swap sides.

If You Can Do This Many Pushups After 60, Your Upper Body Strength Is Elite

How Often to Do This

The whole sequence takes around 8 minutes. Do it once a day, at the same time each day if you can, so it becomes a habit rather than a decision.

I like fitting these into natural pauses in the day: the towel squeeze while the news is on, the finger fan and grip while the kettle boils, the jar turn while dinner’s warming, and the wrist curl in front of the television. This is a routine that fits into gaps, not one that needs a dedicated slot.

Rest one day a week if your forearms feel tired. Six days is plenty. Every fortnight, notice what’s gotten easier: jars that felt tight, kettles that felt heavy, or shopping bags you’d been swapping hand to hand. Those are the real progress markers.

4 Bed Exercises That Flatten Lower Belly Faster Than Crunches After 60

What to Expect

Within the first week, most people notice a jar or bottle opens more easily. That’s the neural side of grip responding, which is always the fastest to change.

By 3 to 4 weeks, the actual muscle in your forearm starts to change. The kettle feels lighter, the shopping bag stops digging in, and your hand stops cramping after long tasks like ironing or peeling vegetables.

By 6 to 8 weeks, most of my clients report that the whole hand feels different: firmer, more capable, less prone to the aches that had crept in. This is often the point where family members comment that you seem to be doing more around the house without complaint.

Grip strength is one of the strongest indicators of independent living, and it stays that way into your seventies and eighties. Eight minutes of daily work now buys years of being able to open your own jars, carry your own bags, and hold a grandchild’s hand with steady strength. That’s a good return.

Captured in Jamaica: Alleged $32 Million COVID-19 Fraud Fugitive Extradited to US, Says FBI

0

A high-profile fugitive accused of COVID-19 relief fraud, once listed among the FBI’s most wanted, has been extradited to the United States after authorities apprehended her in Jamaica. According to FBI Director Kash Patel, the suspect, known as Elaine Angene Escoe, had been living under the alias “Harley Newman” while evading serious allegations linked to a $32 million pandemic relief fraud scheme.

Elaine Angene Escoe, aged 41, was brought back to South Florida on Thursday following her capture by Jamaican authorities amid an extensive federal manhunt. Prosecutors claim she was involved in fraudulently acquiring over $32 million intended for COVID-19 relief, fleeing the United States after missing a scheduled court appearance.

In 2025, Escoe faced a federal indictment with multiple charges, including conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering, as well as several counts of money laundering. These charges were levied by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Florida, cementing her status as a high-priority target for law enforcement.

Escoe’s alleged involvement in schemes to defraud federal COVID-19 relief initiatives has been highlighted, particularly her purported role in a $32 million fraud. Her capture and extradition mark a significant development in ongoing efforts to bring those responsible for exploiting pandemic funds to justice. (Federal Bureau of Investigation)

Federal prosecutors said a judge issued an arrest warrant after Escoe failed to appear in court in May 2025. Authorities allege she fled to Jamaica, where she was later located and arrested after the FBI received a tip.

“Elaine Angene Escoe’s arrest and return to the United States demonstrates that no one is beyond the reach of American justice,” Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said.

Blanche said Escoe is accused of participating in a multimillion-dollar scheme to defraud taxpayer-funded COVID-19 relief programs and said the Justice Department will continue prosecuting those who steal from the American people.

Patel called Escoe’s arrest another milestone in the FBI’s international fraud crackdown, saying she is the fourth alleged “Most Wanted Fraudster” captured in the past five weeks.

“The historic success of the ‘Most Wanted Fraudster’ list continues as the FBI and our partners just captured our fourth Most Wanted Fraudster in 5 weeks, and yet another high value target returned to the U.S. by this FBI,” Patel said. “Elaine Angene Escoe, on the run since May 2025, was captured in Jamaica while living under a fake identity of ‘Harley Newman’ — and returned to the United States today to face justice.”

Patel said Escoe is charged with being involved in a conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering connected to a scheme that fraudulently obtained more than $32 million in federal COVID-19 relief funds.

He added that the FBI has returned more than 30 high-value targets to the U.S. since June. Patel said four alleged fraud suspects captured over the past five weeks are collectively charged with nearly $1.8 billion in fraud after spending more than 3,500 days on the run across three continents.

“Under this administration, fraud is no longer tolerated — and those who steal from American taxpayers have nowhere to hide,” Patel said.

Authorities said the FBI, Homeland Security Investigations, the U.S. Marshals Service, Jamaican law enforcement and the Palm Beach County State Attorney’s Office coordinated Escoe’s return to the U.S.

Newport Beach Police Probing Unauthorized Event Incident

0

In the wake of recent Fourth of July mayhem, a Southern California police department finds itself bracing for impact once more. The department issued a decisive advisory on Saturday, signaling the investigation of yet another unsanctioned public gathering potentially slated for the upcoming weekend.

Newport Beach’s law enforcement sent out a no-nonsense alert as officers delved into the possible orchestration of an unlawful event anticipated within days.

“We’ve seen the post,” was the department’s stern acknowledgment on social media, highlighting their awareness of the situation.

Police elaborated, stating, “The event is under active investigation, and we are working with our regional partners to identify those involved in organizing or promoting any unlawful activity.” Their message underscores a collaborative effort with other agencies to thwart potential disruptions.

Acknowledging the need for heightened vigilance, authorities have announced the deployment of additional officers throughout the city. This measure aims to forestall any recurrence of holiday disorder, ensuring communal peace and order are maintained.

Police urged visitors to respect the community — or face the consequences.

“Anyone who organizes, promotes or participates in criminal activity should expect immediate enforcement action,” Newport Beach Police stated, whether it be vandalism or unlawful assembly.

“Our priority is to protect the community, maintain public safety and respond quickly to any criminal activity.”

The department also warned that young troublemakers won’t get a free pass, noting that minors can still face “serious” consequences and liability for their actions.

The investigation comes after videos from the July 4 gathering in Newport Beach — one of Southern California’s most affluent coastal communities — spread online, showing scenes that triggered outrage and concern among residents.

People running on a beach as police on horses and in cars try to control a crowd.

More than 400 people were arrested as the gathering descended into utter chaos, with authorities later pointing to an alleged social media-fueled “TikTok Takeover” as a catalyst. There were reports of large crowds fighting and setting off illegal fireworks.

Youths and minors made up the majority of those taken into custody, and police revealed that the overwhelming majority of attendees arrested came from outside Newport Beach, such as Arizona or other parts of California.

Officials said the situation quickly turned dangerous, with people blocking roadways, restricting emergency vehicle access and throwing mortars, fireworks and other projectiles at officers. At least one officer was reportedly injured.

Clips appear to show people carrying broken street signs and looting a nearby Pavilions grocery store on West Balboa Boulevard, with cops on horseback also charging at revelers on the beach.

Mayor Lauren Kleiman previously said the city has long experienced an influx of young visitors over the Fourth of July weekend, but believes social media has intensified the problem.

“The last couple of years we’ve definitely seen an uptick, in particular kids from out of state. [It’s] not atypical, but I think that social media has really changed things,” he said.

Michigan AD’s Resignation to Unlock Lucrative Payoff Package

0

In a significant development at the University of Michigan, Warde Manuel is set to receive a hefty $7 million buyout after choosing to step down amid a series of controversies.

According to reports from the Detroit News and Front Office Sports, Manuel will not only receive this sizeable payout but will also enjoy additional benefits as part of the agreement. Notably, his professional file will record that he has voluntarily resigned.

Originally, Manuel’s contract, lasting until 2030, promised an annual salary of approximately $2.4 million.

The Daily Mail has reached out for comments from representatives of the athletic department.

Manuel will continue with the university until the end of the year. During this time, he will remain in Ann Arbor as Kyle Whittingham, the new Wolverines football coach, begins his tenure following the dismissal of Sherrone Moore this fall.

Moore, a married father-of-three, lost his job as head football coach due to an ‘inappropriate relationship’ with a staffer who was later identified as his assistant, Paige Shiver. Moore was arrested a few dramatic hours later near the woman’s apartment and has since been given probation after pleading guilty to trespassing and malicious use of a telecommunications device.

An investigation was launched after football head coach Sherrone Moore was accused of an affair with staffer Paige Shiver, who served as his executive assistant at the time

Following the shocking events, the school launched an independent investigation into the practices and culture of its athletics department, conducted by Chicago-based law firm Jenner & Block. And earlier this month, the University of Michigan announced that Manuel would be stepping down from his role as director of the athletics department before 2027.

The 58-year-old has led the Wolverines since 2016, heading up a department with an annual budget of about $250 million, 29 teams, 950-plus athletes and about 400 staff members – overseeing the NCAA powerhouse’s numerous successes in that time.

His tenure was marked by multiple national championships – including both the men’s football and basketball – but also numerous scandals with the controversial events of last December proving to be the final nail in the coffin.

‘Neither the investigation nor the culture review found that misconduct was widespread throughout the department,’ a summary of the investigation stated.

‘The culture review found that weaknesses in accountability, organizational structure, oversight, and reporting created conditions in which misconduct was not always addressed consistently, promptly, or in accordance with University expectations.’

The review, which has reportedly cost $12 million, added: ‘Manuel demonstrated important leadership strengths, particularly his commitment to student-athletes. At the same time, it identified failures to quickly and effectively act on allegations of wrongdoing by Athletic Department employees.’

Jenner & Block interviewed nearly 300 witnesses across 350 interviews over the course of their probe. The firm interviewed a wide range of witnesses, including coaches, athletics staff, student-athletes, University leaders, human resources personnel, and other stakeholders.

They also followed more than 90 leads from a hotline they established to gather information and reviewed more than 20,000 records.

Moore was accused of confronting staffer Paige Shiver, with whom he had been having an affair, and blaming her for his firing. Authorities said she had previously ended the affair and spoken to school officials about it.

The coach was accused of barging his way through Shiver’s door, grabbing butter knives and scissors before threatening to kill himself. The 40-year-old father of three was arrested and charged with home invasion and stalking as well as breaking and entering.

Moore pleaded no contest to trespassing and malicious use of a telecom device and was placed on probation in April for 18 months.

It wasn’t the first scandal to rock the school’s athletic department in recent years – albeit it was the most shocking.

In March 2025, former offensive coordinator Matt Weiss was charged with hacking and accused by federal prosecutors of stealing thousands of private, intimate images of student-athletes. Weiss pleaded not guilty to all 24 charges.

In 2018, Michigan’s ex-director of performance science, Fergus Connolly, was arrested for DUI – but was also hit with multiple counts of assaulting/resisting/obstructing a police officer.

After being transported to a hospital, Connolly allegedly attempted to bite someone. He later pleaded no contest to five of the nine misdemeanor charges against him, with prosecutors dropping other counts.

In 2023, Glenn ‘Shemy’ Schembechler – the son of longtime Michigan coach Bo Schembechler – resigned three days after he was hired following social media activity that was deemed to be concerning and harmful by the school.

Michigan was also hit with NCAA sanctions over the sign-stealing scheme orchestrated by former football staffer Connor Stalions.

There were also allegations of physical and verbal abuse against now-former Michigan basketball coach, Juwan Howard, including one incident in which he slapped an assistant coach on an opposing team during post-game handshakes.

However, Michigan has also seen a lot of success under Manuel’s tenure. The football team won the national championship in January 2024 under then-head coach Jim Harbaugh, who subsequently left the program to join the Los Angeles Chargers.

And in addition to five Frozen Four appearances for the men’s hockey team since 2018, Michigan also won its second national championship in basketball back in April under coach Dusty May, who has since been hired by the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks.

MEMORISE: The Lord is a man of war: the Lord is his name. – Exodus 15:3 (KJV)

READ: Deuteronomy 20:1-4 (KJV)

1 When thou goest out to battle against thine enemies, and seest horses, and chariots, and a people more than thou, be not afraid of them: for the Lord thy God is with thee, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.

2 And it shall be, when ye are come nigh unto the battle, that the priest shall approach and speak unto the people,

4 For the Lord your God is he that goeth with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to save you.

BIBLE IN ONE YEAR: Isaiah 41-43

Open Heaven 26 July 2026 MESSAGE

I am always praising God, and there are several reasons I do so and will continue doing so. One of the reasons I always give praise to the Almighty is that He always fights my battles for me. He is the Mighty Man of War, as today’s memory verse tells us.

While I was a lecturer at the University of Ilorin in Kwara State, Nigeria, I would often return home from the school campus in the afternoons to have lunch and rest for a while before returning for my evening lectures. One particular afternoon, I finished my lunch and lay on the couch in the living room to rest. At that time, I was also the pastor of a parish, and many people would often come and go from my living room. I knew that if anyone saw my eyes closed, they would think I was sleeping and wouldn’t bother me, so I closed my eyes, put my hands together and put them under my head like a pillow. Suddenly, someone came into the room and grabbed my hands with one hand and my legs with the other hand while attempting to kiss me. At first, I thought it was my wife, but I realised that a person who could hold my hands and legs at the same time must be very tall, so it couldn’t be her. I opened my eyes, and the being vanished. Instantly, I felt a cold sensation all over my body. I got up, got into my car, and drove to the campus for my evening lectures. Not long after, I began to vomit and pass stool at the same time. When returned home, I had to crawl out of the car to go to the toilet, and I asked, “Daddy, what is this? I am Your son. Why is this happening to me?” God replied, “Son, I just want you to see a little bit of the battles I am fighting for you.”

Many people think that they are alive because they are wise. However, if God allows them to experience a little bit of the battles He fights for them daily, they will know that they are alive only because of His grace. Beloved, you are alive today, not because you can keep yourself alive, but because God is fighting your battles for you. This is why you must thank Him always. He neither slumbers nor sleeps (Psalm 121:4), and that is why He can fight your battles even when you are asleep.

Open Heaven 26 July 2026 PRAYER POINT

Father, I thank You for fighting my battles for me, in Jesus’ name.

Open Heaven 26 July 2026 HYMN 17 – Praise My Soul, The King Of Heaven

1 Praise, my soul, the King of heaven;
to his feet your tribute bring.
Ransomed, healed, restored, forgiven,
evermore his praises sing.
Alleluia, alleluia!
Praise the everlasting King!

2 Praise him for his grace and favor
to his people in distress.
Praise him, still the same as ever,
slow to chide, and swift to bless.
Alleluia, alleluia!
Glorious in his faithfulness!

3 Fatherlike he tends and spares us;
well our feeble frame he knows.
In his hand he gently bears us,
rescues us from all our foes.
Alleluia, alleluia!
Widely yet his mercy flows!

4 Angels, help us to adore him;
you behold him face to face.
Sun and moon, bow down before him,
dwellers all in time and space.
Alleluia, alleluia!
Praise with us the God of grace!

DCLM Daily Manna 26 July 2026 Devotional by Pastor W. F. Kumuyi — Flee From Headwinds

TOPIC: Flee From Headwinds (DCLM Daily Manna 26 July 2026)

KEY VERSE: Then Jonah prayed unto the LORD his God out of the fish’s belly – Jonah 2:1

TEXT: Jonah 2:1-10 (KJV)

1 Then Jonah prayed unto the Lord his God out of the fish’s belly,

2 And said, I cried by reason of mine affliction unto the Lord, and he heard me; out of the belly of hell cried I, and thou heardest my voice.

3 For thou hadst cast me into the deep, in the midst of the seas; and the floods compassed me about: all thy billows and thy waves passed over me.

4 Then I said, I am cast out of thy sight; yet I will look again toward thy holy temple.

5 The waters compassed me about, even to the soul: the depth closed me round about, the weeds were wrapped about my head.

6 I went down to the bottoms of the mountains; the earth with her bars was about me for ever: yet hast thou brought up my life from corruption, O Lord my God.

7 When my soul fainted within me I remembered the Lord: and my prayer came in unto thee, into thine holy temple.

8 They that observe lying vanities forsake their own mercy.

9 But I will sacrifice unto thee with the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay that that I have vowed. Salvation is of the Lord.

10 And the Lord spake unto the fish, and it vomited out Jonah upon the dry land.

DCLM Daily Manna For Today MESSAGE:

Sometimes, people wait until they are buffeted by severe suffering, when it appears as if all hope is lost, when their human efforts have failed, before seeking God. They miss the crucial turning point, unlike David who cried out to God: “early will I seek thee… my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee.” How wise it is for people to turn to the Lord early, for then they are able to prevent the experiences that leave them bruised all through life, as happened to Jonah.

Jonah’s suffering was avoidable. He was sent by God to take the message of salvation to Nineveh, but instead of obeying, he consciously rebelled against God. He bought a ticket and boarded a ship heading in the wrong direction. He thought he could outwit God. But there is no hiding place from God. He trailed Jonah in his escape ship with a tempest, and when he was about to be thrown into the sea, God prepared a whale to swallow him. This is in itself an act of mercy, for it is physically impossible to be in the belly of the whale for three days without dying. It means that God allowed Jonah to sink to the depth of hopelessness in the valley of the shadow of death, and yet granted him the grace to consciously bow at last, to His demands.

Deep in the belly of the fish, Jonah at last, cried out for mercy from God. He was mortified at the prospect of drowning at sea, and being eternally separated from God. He remembered God, and began to plead passionately to Him for another chance at life. He admitted that he had forsaken his only source of mercy. Now repentant, Jonah pledged his loyalty to God, and promised to redeem his vows, which presumably, included going anywhere the Lord sent him. Expectedly, God graciously extended His salvation to him, and commanded the whale to vomit out Jonah.

You must avoid being the architect of your misfortune, and flee from the temptation to reject God’s word. You do not need to go through near-death experiences before retracing your steps from rebellion and disobedience. Where you have strayed from God’s leading and guidance, and have erected your own devices, or excused your moral failures and weakness in character, you must seek God’s mercy, asking for grace to follow Him faithfully, serve Him diligently and obey Him completely. Once He sees your sincerity of purpose, He will pardon and bring you back to His perfect will.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
God responds to even prayer made in fish’s belly but it’s better to avoid getting there.
