Horrific Discovery: Mother Arrested for Keeping Children in Feces-Filled “Biohazard” Home

0

In a harrowing discovery, a Florida mother has been taken into custody following revelations that her three children were living amid deplorable conditions, with their home tainted by fecal matter.

Carla Nishikura now faces three charges of child neglect without significant bodily harm, as confirmed by jail records reviewed by Oxygen. The status of her plea is currently unknown, and her legal representative has yet to respond to inquiries for comment.

“Deputies were met with an appalling sight inside the residence,” Flagler County Sheriff Rick Staly conveyed in a statement to Oxygen. “Such conditions are unfit for anyone, not even a pet, to endure for even one night.”

The disturbing scene came to light on July 16, prompted by a call from neighbors who observed a naked child wandering outside and hurling rocks, according to 911 call recordings accessed by Oxygen.

Upon Nishikura opening the door, she explained the situation involving her 8-year-old daughter, who has autism, is non-verbal, and has previously wandered off, as detailed in a charging affidavit referenced by Oxygen. Nishikura admitted the child had exited through the garage door while she was asleep, due to forgetting to secure it the night before.

Inside, officers were hit with a strong odor and noted that feces were “coating” the walls, floors and ceiling of the kitchen and living room, according to the affidavit. They also observed cracked electrical outlet covers with exposed wires.

The girl’s room contained only a bed frame, but no mattress, and the floor was “covered” with fecal matter, urine and cracked eggs, the affidavit noted. Nishikura said her daughter had been sleeping on a couch in the living room, while her other children slept in a separate bedroom or in her room.

Meanwhile, the officer noted in the affidavit that the 8-year-old was “using a tool to scrape fecal matter from the wall and manipulate it with her hands.”

One of the children said they were told not to enter their sister’s bedroom, according to the affidavit, adding that the feces—which they described as “hard as a rock”—had been there for approximately a month.

Nishikura acknowledged her living conditions but said she was unable to manage the home and children by herself.

She also said she had a Department of Children and Families caseworker but could not provide a name or contact number, according to the affidavit.

The officer later learned that a representative of a case management agency had visited the family’s home the previous day and filed a report over its “deplorable” conditions, according to the affidavit. That representative also told police that a cleaning service had been arranged, but the company declined due to the “biohazard conditions.”

Nishikura was detained outside while trying to re-enter her home, according to body-camera footage obtained by Oxygen. She was booked into the Sheriff Perry Hall Inmate Detention Facility on a $7,500 bond.

A judge later issued Nishikura a no-contact order with her children, regardless of her release. Court records show her next court date is Aug. 18.

Tragic Berlin Pride Incident: One Fatality and 15 Injured in Suspected Car Ramming

0

A tragic incident in Berlin on Saturday has left one person dead and around 15 others injured after a car allegedly plowed into a crowd near the city’s Gay Pride parade.

Authorities have reported that a vehicle entered Tiergarten park, striking multiple individuals. The local police announced via social media that they are actively searching for the car’s occupants.

Florian Nath, a police spokesperson, revealed that several victims suffered severe injuries and are currently receiving medical treatment from emergency responders.

Investigators have located what they believe to be the vehicle involved, which was found abandoned, according to statements given to AFP.

The Gay Pride parade was abruptly halted following the incident, with authorities urging attendees to “Go home, please” as they cordoned off the affected area to treat and manage the situation.

An eyewitness by the main Pride stage at Brandenburg Gate said the crowd complied with the request to leave and head away from the park shortly at around 11:00 pm.

The program at the main stage had been scheduled to continue until midnight.

An AFP journalist in the area saw at least 10 emergency service vehicles at the scene and a tent set up in the road.

Police officers could be seen patrolling the huge area of the park.

Earlier Saturday, hundreds of thousands of people took part in the event, called Christopher Street Day in Germany.

The march ended next to the Brandenburg Gate, which has been the venue for concerts since Friday.

Germany has in recent years seen several violent attacks at public spaces, including a stabbing in February 2025 at Berlin’s Holocaust memorial, a stone’s throw from the scene of Saturday’s incident.

This is a developing story and will be updated.

Queens Chaos: Armed Man in Tactical Gear Shot by NYPD After Explosive House Incident Leaves 2 Dead

0

A man clad in tactical gear emerged from a Queens residence shortly after a fiery explosion shook the neighborhood on Saturday. This dramatic turn of events unfolded as officers from the New York City Police Department (NYPD) responded to an urgent 911 call reporting gunshots and a man ominously shouting, “kill them, kill them.”

The suspect, identified as 33-year-old Keegan Thompson, was taken into custody after being shot by police in the chaotic aftermath of the explosion, as confirmed by NYPD Assistant Chief Christopher McIntosh. Inside the home, authorities tragically discovered the bodies of two family members.

Police officers were dispatched to the scene on Ocean Crest Boulevard in Far Rockaway just after noon. The 911 call was made by a caller reporting her husband was armed, McIntosh explained.

Upon their arrival, officers were met outside by a woman who recounted hearing gunshots coming from inside the house. She described entering a room where she found a body lying motionless on a bed, prompting her hasty exit to call for help.

The woman also alerted officers that her husband was likely armed with a shotgun, adding to the urgency and sense of danger surrounding the situation, according to officials.

Officers established a perimeter, requested the NYPD Emergency Service Unit (ESU) and repeatedly attempted to contact the suspect, but were unable to establish communication.

At about 12:15 p.m., as ESU officers prepared to enter, a large explosion erupted from inside the home, McIntosh said.

Fifteen to 20 seconds later, the suspect emerged from the burning home carrying a shotgun while wearing a tactical vest loaded with additional ammunition.

Officers repeatedly ordered the suspect to raise his hands and drop the weapon, police said. When he failed to comply and continued holding the shotgun, an officer fired, striking him.

He was taken into custody, and officers rendered aid before he was taken to Jamaica Hospital, where he remains in critical but stable condition.

McIntosh said Thompson has no criminal history or history of mental illness documented by the NYPD.

Officers later found two dead family members inside the home. The victims have not been identified, and investigators are working to determine their causes of death.

As flames engulfed the house, responding officers evacuated neighboring homes to protect nearby residents.

Investigators have not determined what caused the explosion. When asked whether explosives were involved, McIntosh said the investigation remains ongoing.

The shooting was captured on officers’ body-worn cameras and is being investigated by the NYPD’s Force Investigation Division.

“The bravery of the officers who responded today cannot be overstated,” McIntosh said. “They responded to a 911 call not knowing what was waiting for them, and they ran toward the danger with no hesitation.”

Atlantic Niña Unveils Hope: Possible End to Fierce Hurricane Seasons Amid El Niño Challenges

0

This story begins with a simple premise: boy meets girl.

A rather unusual meteorological event is currently unfolding in the Atlantic Ocean, and it might just slow down the pace of this year’s hurricane season, according to experts. This phenomenon is occurring despite the powerful El Niño that is stirring the waters in the Pacific.

Meteorologists are paying close attention to what is known as an Atlantic Niña, an infrequent drop in sea-surface temperatures across the equatorial Atlantic. This cooling trend tends to create an environment that is unfavorable for the formation of hurricanes.

“With an Atlantic Niña, we usually see reduced tropical activity during the Atlantic hurricane season. It creates conditions that are less favorable for the development of tropical storms,” explained Alan Reppert, a meteorologist with Accuweather, in an interview with The Post.

The onset of the Atlantic Niña has led to a significant decrease in sea temperatures, dropping them by 2 to 5 degrees Fahrenheit below the average levels.

If the cooling continues, this would be only the sixth summer Atlantic Niña in the last 40 years of data, according to analysis from Severe Weather Europe.

Meanwhile, a Super El Niño has been warming ocean temperatures in the Pacific since June and is projected to be the largest one in at least 150 years, according to Nature.

Peak temps in the Pacific Ocean are currently 3-4 degrees Fahrenheit above normal, according to National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration data.

Studies suggest Atlantic Niñas are associated with about 50% fewer tropical cyclones than normal, including fewer storms that make landfall in the US.

But this storm season will still be busy.

“We expect 11-16 storms, 4-7 hurricanes and 2-4 major hurricanes,” said Reppert. “Of those, 3-5 US impacts are expected. The highest risk areas for the additional impacts include the eastern Gulf of America coastline and coastal North and South Carolina.

“The El Niño typically has a greater impact on the tropical Atlantic season than Atlantic Nina,” he added.

“The next few weeks appear to be pretty quiet with limited chance for development, especially for the beaches along the Northeast US coastline,” Reppert said.

“But, if a storm develops and moves through a highly populated area or forms and moves just right, it can be a big season with just one storm.”

Top NYC Lawyer in Scandal: High-Profile Affair with Junior Colleague Exposed

0

A prominent attorney from New York City was recently spotted locked in an intimate kiss with a significantly younger colleague on a Central Park bench. This romantic encounter unfolded not far from the posh $2.3 million apartment he shares with his wife, who is also a lawyer.

At 45, Nathaniel D Cullerton was captured on video engaging in the passionate exchange with 29-year-old Kelsey Borenzweig. This moment took place in the area known as Billionaires’ Row and was filmed by TikTok comedian Jay Guapo. With a following of 3.5 million, Guapo shared the now-popular clip on Thursday.

The Daily Mail has since identified the pair involved in the clandestine romance.

Cullerton, who holds a partnership at the prestigious law firm Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz, appeared utterly engrossed as he kissed Borenzweig, who is an associate at the same firm. Their display of affection became quite the spectacle.

Both attorneys are part of the firm’s litigation team and recently collaborated on a high-profile case this spring, successfully defending OpenAI leader Sam Altman in a civil lawsuit instigated by none other than Elon Musk.

Clad in a pale blue suit and tan Oxford shoes, Cullerton gave a dazed-looking smile as he turned to face Guapo when the comedian strutted up to the couple and told them: ‘Get a room.’

Borenzweig, who wore a smart pair of beige pants and brown-patterned bolero jacket, looked just as enamored with Cullerton and rubbed his neck during the steamy clinch.

Guapo appears to have stumbled on the pair by chance, filming them to mock their public display of affection. It is unclear exactly when the video was filmed.

The kiss took place on the western edge of Central Park, about 30 blocks south of the co-op Cullerton is listed as living in with wife Moira Penza, 42, along an ultra-exclusive stretch of Manhattan’s Fifth Avenue.

Guapo could be seen scolding the pair and hissing: ‘Get a room. There’s kids watching.’

Borenzweig and Cullerton tried to shoo him away and cover his camera on realizing that their tryst was being filmed. He walked towards Guapo and forcefully demanded: ‘Put the phone down,’ but to no avail.

The loved-up couple were quickly identified by commenters when Guapo uploaded the clip to his TikTok. It spread like wildfire across social media and set elite New York City law circles ablaze with gossip.

Cullerton’s wife Penza is a partner at another top law firm, Wilkinson Stekloff.

They married in February 2016. Before moving into private practice, Penza worked as a federal prosecutor and led the case against NXIVM sex cult leader Keith Raniere.

She appeared on an episode of HBO series The Vow, which investigated the secretive cult.

On Friday, a stressed-looking Cullerton was seen arriving at the second home that he shares with Penza in Wilton, Connecticut, where he is from.

The primrose-colored clapboard property was built in 1818 and has immaculately manicured gardens surrounded by a stone wall and white picket fence.

Cullerton spent around two hours inside the house, with multiple cars seen coming and going while he was there.

Later on Friday, he drove back to Manhattan, returning to his Upper East Side apartment in a badly creased linen shirt shortly after 4pm.

Cullerton emerged from his dark gray Range Rover looking intensely at his iPhone, which he then kept pressed to his ear while remaining silent when asked by the Daily Mail for comment on the video and whether his wife had seen it.

A doorman then stepped out and ushered him into the building.

Borenzweig is in a relationship with Adam Littlestone-Luria. He told the Daily Mail he is aware of the video that has sparked the scandal but did not feel comfortable commenting on it further

Borenzweig is in a relationship with Adam Littlestone-Luria, a 35-year-old judicial law clerk with the Second Circuit Court of Appeals in New York.

Littlestone-Luria, who enjoys ballroom dancing in his free time, is the only figure connected to the scandal who has responded so far.

Asked about the video by telephone on Friday, he told a Daily Mail reporter: ‘I am not comfortable talking about this, but I am aware of it.’

Asked if he was still with Borenzweig, Littlestone-Luria repeated: ‘I am not comfortable talking about this,’ and ended the call.

Meanwhile, Borenzweig appears to have called in the cavalry – her parents Tracy and Matt were flown in from California to New York.

The brunette, dressed in a blue cap and sunglasses, cut a low-key figure as she left her luxury Flatiron apartment in a taxi to meet her parents for coffee at the upscale Crosby Street Hotel in Soho on Saturday morning.

Sources told the Daily Mail that they discussed an upcoming trip to South Africa, telling workers at the hotel they were in town to visit Kelsey.

But the conversation then appeared to sour, with Borenzweig sitting silent as her parents spoke, although it is unclear if they are aware of the situation.

The Daily Mail has repeatedly contacted Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz for comment on Cullerton and Borenzweig’s relationship, without receiving any response.

Top law firms strongly discourage romances between superiors and subordinates over potential conflicts of interest and favoritism.

Workers are generally warned that they must promptly disclose any romantic relationships with co-workers to human resources.

It is unclear when Cullerton and Borenzweig’s romance started or whether it has been disclosed to human resources, but the pair worked closely together to win the Altman case against Elon Musk. Musk claimed Altman had broken a founding agreement to keep OpenAI a nonprofit.

A photo taken during the trial in May 2026 showed Cullerton smiling as he walked into the federal court building in Oakland, California, with Borenzweig just a few steps behind him.

Cullerton’s meteoric rise to success saw him obtain his JD from Georgetown University in 2013, before clerking on the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.

Borenzweig’s legal pedigree is just as impressive.

She received her JD from New York University School of Law in 2022 and also spent time clerking, before joining Wachtell.

She grew up in Malibu, California, in a sizable $2.7 million midcentury home moments from the Pacific Ocean.

The pair’s kiss has drawn comparisons online to an infamous clinch caught on a kiss cam at a Coldplay concert near Boston in July 2025.

Andy Byron, then CEO of data software firm Astronomer, was filmed cuddling the firm’s HR executive Kristin Cabot, with the moment becoming a global sensation.

Byron was married at the time, while Cabot was reportedly separated from her husband. Both left Astronomer in the ensuing scandal over their affair.

The Daily Mail has also contacted Borenzweig and Penza for comment.

Abingdon Police Seek Tips on Armed Robbery Suspect Search

In Abingdon, Virginia, the local law enforcement officers are turning to the public for their help following a frightening armed robbery at a convenience store on Friday. The Abingdon Police Department is hoping keen eyes and sharp memories will aid in their investigation.

In an official statement, the department detailed that officers responded to a 911 call reporting the incident at a convenience store situated in the 600 block of Cummings Street at precisely 10:31 p.m. When police arrived, they learned that the perpetrator had already managed to flee the scene on foot.

According to the police report, the robber entered the store armed, brandished a weapon, and demanded the staff hand over cash. After obtaining money and other items, the suspect swiftly exited the premises.

At the time of the robbery, the suspect was dressed in black pants, a black hoodie, sunglasses, and white shoes. He was last observed heading westward, as indicated in the report released by the authorities.

The department said anyone with information regarding the armed robbery is asked to contact the Washington County Dispatch Center at 276-676-6277.

Fred Warner Provides Reassurance to 49ers After Kyle Shanahan Accident

0

Fred Warner swiftly soothed Kyle Shanahan’s worries after discovering the San Francisco 49ers coach had been severely injured in a car accident.

“We got this, Coach.”

General Manager John Lynch disclosed Warner’s concise yet powerful reassurance as the team prepared to kick off training camp without Shanahan at the helm.

Warner wasn’t the only one expressing concern.

Longtime associate and Los Angeles Rams coach Sean McVay reached out post-accident, expressing relief that there were no severe injuries.

“Most importantly, thank God he and the other person involved is OK,” McVay told reporters. “I think any time that something like that happens, it shakes you up a little bit. But most importantly, I have talked to him. My thoughts and prayers are with him and his family, and I know he’s got an incredible perspective on it all. Kyle’s a stud. I have as much respect for him as anybody and he’s a friend of mine, and I love him and hope that he’s going to have a great recovery.”

“Oh noooo! Get healthy coach!!” former NFL linebacker Emmanuel Acho wrote on X.

Former NFL offensive tackle Taylor Lewan said he was relieved Shanahan survived, while 49ers reporter Grant Cohn reacted to the extent of the injuries by writing, “Whoa. Thank God he’s alive.”

Fans also filled the replies to the 49ers’ announcement with prayers and messages of support. Public reactions from Shanahan’s current players and fellow coaches remained limited immediately after the news broke, though Warner contacted him directly.

His message also reflected the confidence San Francisco has in its veteran leadership.

Lynch named Warner, Trent Williams, Kyle Juszczyk, Christian McCaffrey and Brock Purdy among the players capable of helping maintain order during Shanahan’s absence.

Assistant head coach and offensive line coach Chris Foerster will oversee the team with support from coordinators Klay Kubiak, Raheem Morris and Brant Boyer.

Foerster has spent 13 seasons working with Shanahan between Washington and San Francisco.

“He knows Kyle in and out,” Lynch said. “What Kyle wants, what Kyle needs.”

Lynch joked that the temporary arrangement will not be an exact replica of a Shanahan-led camp.

“We’ll probably do less team meetings because Kyle usually sits up here and talks football for 30 minutes,” Lynch said. “We’re not going to try to replicate that. …

“Chris is kind of a grouchy guy. He doesn’t really believe in breakdowns and all that, so Raheem may do the breakdowns.”

Shanahan suffered the injuries when his vehicle collided with an SUV near his Northern California home on July 14. He reportedly broke his nose, three ribs and a hand, required more than 40 stitches in his face and sustained a severe concussion.

The other driver was not injured. Police said drugs and alcohol were not factors, both drivers cooperated and no citations were issued. Authorities have not disclosed the cause of the collision or assigned fault.

Shanahan has returned to the team facility but is not yet ready to address players or reporters. The 49ers said he will participate on a limited basis while progressing through the same concussion protocol used for players.

No timetable has been provided for his full return.

Until then, Warner’s message captured the approach inside the building: Shanahan should focus on recovering, and his team will handle the rest.

Breakthrough Discovery Reveals Potential Cause of Excessive Sweating Condition

0

A groundbreaking discovery has shed light on a potential cause of a chronic condition characterized by uncontrollable, excessive sweating, potentially opening doors to more effective treatments.

Known as hyperhidrosis, this condition triggers profuse sweating without common stimuli like high temperatures or physical exertion.

Individuals afflicted often experience overwhelming perspiration that soaks through clothing or drips from their hands, interfering with daily activities and necessitating frequent wardrobe changes.

For a long time, hyperhidrosis was primarily considered a dysfunction of the sweat glands themselves.

However, researchers at Johns Hopkins University have recently discovered that a genetic mutation affecting nerve control over sweat glands might be the true culprit.

Dr Malcom Brock, a surgeon who led the research, said: ‘Our findings show that, for some patients, the problem actually begins in the nerves that control sweating.

‘This biological explanation for the condition offers a potential pathway to more effective treatments.’

Primary idiopathic hyperhidrosis occurs when the body produces significantly more sweat than is necessary for temperature regulation (stock)

Primary idiopathic hyperhidrosis occurs when the body produces significantly more sweat than is necessary for temperature regulation (stock)

In the study, published in Science Advances, researchers collected DNA from families with inherited hyperhidrosis and compared their data.

They found that one fifth of sufferers had a mutation on the SCN10A gene for sodium channel NaV1.8, found in nerves that control the activity of sweat glands.

In the second half of the study, scientists then engineered mice to carry the mutation, and the test subjects developed excessive sweating – just like in humans. This showed a direct correlation between the genetic mutation and the condition.

Additional studies revealed that the NaV1.8 channel affects sympathetic nerve cells that control sweating, making those cells more active and causing the body to produce too much sweat.

‘We found that this mutation essentially turns up the volume on the nerve signals that stimulate sweating,’ Brock said. ‘That insight gives us a specific target to pursue for future therapies.’

Hyperhidrosis affects an estimated 15.3 million Americans and often runs in families. It is most common in adults between the ages of 18 and 39.

Risk factors include having a close relative with the condition, taking medications that increase sweating, or having an underlying medical condition linked to excessive perspiration.

To diagnose hyperhidrosis, healthcare providers may order blood or other laboratory tests to rule out underlying causes, or perform a sweat test to pinpoint where sweating occurs and assess its severity.

Typical treatment for hyperhidrosis begins with prescription-strength antiperspirant, but depending on the condition’s severity, it can evolve into stronger medications including oral pills, botulinum toxin injections, and device therapy.

These findings open up a new door for treating the condition, as one expert told the Daily Mail current treatments for hyperhidrosis are designed to control the excessive sweating once it is present.

‘While these treatments can be quite successful at addressing the symptom of excessive sweating, this approach does not address the biological mechanism as to why some individuals develop hyperhidrosis,’ Dr Paul Gross, primary care physician and medical doctor at LIV3 Health, told Daily Mail.

‘By developing an understanding of how to treat hyperhidrosis closer to its origin, researchers will be able to direct future therapies toward correcting the abnormal nerve pathways identified by this research,’ he added.

‘Although these treatments provide relief from the symptoms experienced by most patients, they do not treat the cause,’ Dr Gross said. ‘Therefore, many people experience the need to have additional treatments throughout their lives.’

The expert added that this groundbreaking study could eventually lead to a new generation of treatments, targeted at the overactive nerves.

‘While there is much work to be done before these treatments are available, this study represents an important first step toward providing treatment options that are more accurate and long-term,’ he said.

National Guard Announces $292M Housing Strategy for DC Troops

(The Hill) — In a significant announcement on Thursday, the National Guard unveiled a $292 million initiative to establish “up to 2,000 apartment-style lodging units” for its members in Washington D.C. This endeavor underscores the commitment to providing sustainable accommodations for personnel stationed in the nation’s capital.

The lucrative housing contract has been awarded to Placemakr, a prominent corporate lodging firm, marking the largest collaboration of its kind within the National Guard’s history. Placemakr has previously collaborated with Hilton on an extensive apartment project in Phoenix, Arizona, showcasing its expertise in developing vast lodging solutions.

Despite the ambitious nature of the plan, local activist groups have expressed concerns. They criticize the project for not specifying an end date for the deployment, leaving many questions about its longevity unanswered.

According to a National Guard official who spoke with The Hill in July, there are plans to maintain a National Guard presence in the city until at least Inauguration Day 2029. However, this proposal is still pending approval from Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and remains subject to change at the discretion of the president.

Hegseth has previously expressed his support for the ongoing deployment, acknowledging the dedication and service of National Guard members during a July address. His appreciation underscores the importance of their continued presence in the capital.

The contract supports requirements outlined in Executive Order 14252 which created the D.C. Safe and Beautiful Task Force. The guard members have been deployed for around 11 months in an effort by President Trump and other officials to lower crime and “beautify” the nation’s capital.

“You’ve [guard members] done over 530 medical assistances to personnel, you restored children back to their families 27 times, and you have done amazing things in support of law enforcement to make sure we reduce crime,” the National Guard wrote.

After nearly a year, about 5,150 National Guard troops are still in the nation’s capital, comprising 599 D.C. National Guard and 4,403 troops from 21 states, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

The contract for housing these troops was completed in 85 days, which the agency claims is faster than other comparable contract timelines. It also reported that the accelerated timeline received some agency-level vendor protest.

The new housing project adds onto what the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office estimated cost of deployment at $3 million daily. With Sens. Gary Peters (D‑Mich.) and Andy Kim (D‑N.J.) reporting in February that the cost of deployment for taxpayers is nearly $1.65 million.

This lodging deal, the National Guard claims, is nearly 50 percent cheaper than the projected costs from paying for commercial hotels.

Cornbelt Fire Department Steps Up to Meet Rising Demand for Emergency Services

MAHOMET, Ill. (WCIA) — If you’ve been hearing more sirens in Mahomet lately, you’re not alone. The Cornbelt Fire Protection District has been hustling, with almost 50 calls for service flooding in just last week—a figure that’s rapidly becoming the status quo.

Fire Chief John Koller shared insights with WCIA, detailing how the station is evolving under the pressure of this increased demand. The blaring of sirens is becoming a familiar sound at Cornbelt Fire, reflecting a surge in emergency calls that the team has been tackling headlong.

“In the last decade, we’ve observed a staggering 70% surge in calls, which is quite significant,” Chief Koller remarked, highlighting the remarkable rise in demand for their services.

Reflecting on last week’s near-50 calls, Chief Koller, who has been leading the charge for almost 11 years, noted that back when he started, medical emergencies comprised roughly 80% of their total calls. The landscape, however, has shifted dramatically.

“What we see now is a 60/40% split,” he said. “So, 60% in the medical type calls and 40% of all the other types of calls.”

As Mahomet’s population grows, Chief Koller said more calls were expected, and plans were put in place years ago to handle them.

“We did about an eight-year plan,” he said.

That plan includes a full-time ambulance service and an engine company at the station.

“We have a tremendously quicker response time than we used to have, we’ve cut it in half,” Chief Koller said.

Patrick Brown, the Mahomet Village Administrator, said the changes had the village’s best interest in mind.

“With John’s leadership at Cornbelt, you’ve seen a big change in planning for the future,” Brown said.

More than half of Cornbelt’s staff is volunteers.

“Cornbelt was based on and built on volunteers and they’re the backbone of our department and still are to this day,” Chief Koller said.

He said the fire station gets at least new five volunteers a year. Volunteers, along with their board helping to make staffing decisions, are helping the team be better prepared to respond to a higher volume of calls.

“I’m just so proud of everything that everybody does,” Chief Koller said. “I say every day that it takes a lot to keep the big red trucks rolling down the road.”

He said the station is willing to hire more staff if the need arises.
